  1. As a young projectionist in the La Scala. We came across several cans of film stored in a oven in the old kitchen, long before my time the La Scala had a restaurant. I heard that it ran down the strothers lane side of the cinema and that you could have a meal and watch the movie at the same time. This was stopped because other patrons complained about the noise of the diners. This could be some sort of urban legend? Anyway back to the film cans, two were playable as they were safety film. the other 3 or 4 were made of nitrate and unsafe. In fact one can containing a reel of Chaplins 'Easy street' was so unsafe we had to get the fire brigade to dispose of it. The film had turned bright orange and was melting. The two reels of safety film contained scenes of the Boy's Brigade marching through Inverness in the early 50s also from the same period was scenes from some sporting event in either Bught park or the Northern meeting ground, can't really remember which venue. These reels were passed on to their owner and maker Jimmy Nairn. Mr Nairn, as I knew him, made a film record of Inverness between the 40s and 70s. Many of his films can be seen on the Scottish film archieve site. He was known as 'Mr Cinema' a title that was quite fitting and used in a film documentary of his career, which was showing on CAC screens around the country in 79/80. While most people remember this adopted Invernessian as the manager of the Playhouse from 42 till its end and those amazing christmas displays, which were sadly destroyed in the fire along with some very rare music boxes. There was more to the Glasgow born showman. Not only did he make films and take photographs of the changing face of Inverness he was also an inventor. He invented a type of slide projector system. Those of us who were lucky to work for Mr Nairn held him in the highest respect, actually most of us were in awe of him. James S Nairn.
  2. Now this is entertaining. I'd love to see SPL players warm up in this fashion. :popular01: http://www.joga.com/VideoView.aspx?videoId...451589296594793
  3. Will you be back when nothing comes of it so we can say GIRFUY??? sure thing lover :love04:
  4. Looks like a Hibee is returning home. :001: Whats he getting at ICT £ 700 - £ 800 we were paying O'Connor double that! Anyway its just a short visit to say I told you so and act smug. :030:
  5. The Empire Theater closed its doors in 1970. Eventually the owners CAC built an office block in its place with the idea of using a floor as their head office, they changed their mind when they realised that they couldn't afford the lost rent. :015: I enjoyed my visits to the Empire where I saw the hilarious Lex McLean show. The highly talented Corries was another show I had the pleasure to see there, surprisingly the following photo was taken when they were appearing. My Dad had a morris 1100 just like the one parked outside. Even went to see the wrestling with Mick McMannus who caused a stir around town as he visited antique shops in the area, he was a avid collector and that he was such a soft spoken man unlike his TV image. Simpler days! :001: http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y281/gerx13/9e136c26.jpg
  6. If my memory serves me right there were less than 10 customers for a tea time screening of 'Le Mans' I think there were more staff. The fire alert came at the back of 7 as the film was reaching it climax, surprisingly it was first reported by someone in the Crown district. By the time I exited the building before 7.30 there was a helluva lot of people outside and the roof was ablaze. Had only seen smoke in the building so that sight was a bit of a laxative for me. Jimmy Nairn had arrived shortly after and moved us all into the Royal across the road. Knocked back a stiff one after my hurried visit to the loo! Theres more to it than that but I'm saving it for the book. :004: :001:
  7. First film I watched in Inverness was 'Thunderbirds are go' at the LaScala, my parents wanted to watch 'The sound of music' at the Playhouse. Sort of sums up the difference between the two cinemas. Never got a chance to see any films in the Palace but I was in its projection room and it was the better one. The Empire only did theatre in my time.
  8. http://www.livingston-mad.co.uk/news/loadf...8&id=268207 Came across this little gem thought you guys will appreciate it. :001:
  9. Great footballer shame his career has been cut short due to injury. Hes a certainty for management.

  11. Looks like we'll be getting an early chance for a little bit of revenge, thats if you beat Shelbourne or Vetra (gawd how I hate them). :001: :001: :001: Management reserves the right to change.
  12. How come we always finish higher in the league. :016:
  13. They owe the fans after the last farcical escapade in that mickey mouse competition (though if we get one of the availiable EUFA spots it won't be a mickey........). :001:
  14. With Garry O gone Loko, Deek & Caldwell bench warming at smeltic and Mogga departing to the massive heights of Ipswich. It looks bad at ER? Brown, Thompson, Sproule, Whittaker, Murphy, Beuzelin, Fletcher or Shiels would have Charlie Christie wetting himself if he could have a choice of one. Yeah we're worried, like f*ck! :028: :028:
  15. 1. HIBS (with Dargo) 2. CELTIC (with Riordan and Caldwell on the bench) 3. ICT (with a miracle) 4. RANGERS (with Pepe Le Pews foreign legion and Ian Judas Murray on the bench) 5. ABERDEEN (with Calderwood blaming everyone but himself) 6. ST MIRREN (with some dodgy refereeing) 7. MOTHERWELL (Butcher gone no change) 8. KILMARNOCK (with the manager of the year) 9. DUNDEE UTD (with Brewsters wide ranging changes) 10.FALKIRK (by sheer hard yogi-ing) 11.DUNFERMLINE (saved by the removal of relegation after mad vlad turns Tynecastle into luxury flats) :001:
  16. If TM does leave ER then it will be to Ipswich. With Joe Royal leaving Ipswich, today, it a perfect situation for him. He doesn't have the experience for a start in the premier league and he has strong links with the club, his wife is also from there. Looks like another close season of looking for a replacement at ER! :009:
  17. http://www.scottishquest.com/howscottish/game.html Might have been already posted? if so its worth a second go. :001: :001: :001:
  18. I have several memories some good some bad....... the bad would be running 'Le Mans' while the Playhouse cinema burnt down. A great cinema. The good .......... coming across an inebriated Robbie Coltrane on his hands and knee's lookin' at the standee for 'Goldeneye' placed outside the auditorium of said film. He looked up at myself and a usher and said ' Just lookin' for my f*ckin' name'. He then went into watch the film, well actually he went into sober up before an lunchtime appointment. A great guy drunk or sober.
  19. The eastgate fish 'n' chip shop (Ronnies?) was the best in town IMO. The Albert was a place I frequented now and again, they had a vodka by the name of 'Polish pure' it had a great kick to it.
  20. Sponsor the team and make them wear a red n black strip.
  21. If you know nothing about this 18 yo Argentinian wonder kid, Sergio Aguero. He plies his trade at Indepeniente, since his debut as a 15 yo, and has stated he would like to play in front of the Kop. Watch and drool, if you already know about him then I'm sure you'll aready be salivating. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=75...71&q=aguero
  22. Most Hibs fans and I would expect the playing staff, as well, will have put his comments down to TM trying to pressurise the board in loosening the purse strings. TM is one of the best new managers around, I will be very surprised and happy if he is still managing Hibs in 2 years time in fact lets shorten that to the start of next season. TM is ambitious he wants to go far in the game and you just have to live with him being linked to jobs that may help him realise some of his ambitions.
  23. Tear Gas (SAHB without Alex) were there and If were a definate!
  24. You got me lost? :dunno:
