Dev League: United 2 Inverness CT 3

    November 3, 2015

In an entertaining encounter which helped light up a dank and dismal foggy afternoon at Dundee United’s St Andrews training complex, the Highland visitors edged it by the odd goal in five.

    By Peter Rundo

The combination of the Youth Cup tie on Sunday and tomorrow’s League Cup tie at Easter Road meant it was a less experienced Tannadice side than usual.

Nevertheless, they had by far the better of the first half going in a goal to the good after Ola Adeyemo had fired home from close range after five minutes.

However, Inverness hit back through an Ally Sutherland volley ten minutes after the restart.

And ten minutes later, they were ahead when Nat Wedderburn curled home a free-kick from 22 yards.

At that stage, the visitors looked like they might run away with the game passing up a couple of good chances, but instead United recovered and Justin Johnson cut in from the left to fire a shot from outside the box which went under the keeper to equalise with 15 minutes left.

Unfortunately, United conceded possession just inside their own half and Lewis Horner raced forward to crack home the winner in the final minutes.

  2. Have not been to a game this season so far but will get back again in not too distant future. For me, living in Perth every games an away day. I would usually travel by train and taking account of food, drink, travel and entry I probably spend around £70 each game.

I think that if we are calling for clubs to reduce costs for away fans then we must also call on them to  reduce for home fans as well. Would it really be fair if those in North stand paid £20 while those in South paid £10 to watch the same game?

  3. Our attendance is what it is and no amount of debate is going to change that. Perth is a city of similar size and population to Inverness but has a football team thats been around since 1885. They have had limited success's over the years, including the Scottish Cup the year before us yet still only have a similar home fanbase as we do. Perth sends quite a few buses to OF matches just as Inverness do. Perth actually sent quite a few of their supporters to our SC final to boost our support and ensure their european place.

St Johnstone haven't managed to oust OF fans and increase their fanbase in 130 years. What chance do we have?

  4. I'm with the Bughtmaster. I'm thinking there's big financial difficulties at the club. Why else would they feel the need to pay off one of their most hard working and helpful members of staff. The club has struggled to balance the books for a few years now. The hope was that crowd figures would rise each year but that hasn't happened. There's no sugar daddy with blank cheques to keep us where we are. We pay the lowest player salaries in the league so there's no incentive for them to sign long term deals. Many have come from obscurity on a low wage to ressurect careers and will move on to better earnings as they get noticed. Just think what a SC medal is going to do for the CV.

I think this is where JH is coming from. He cant build with players who want to better themselves and he can't offer them any incentive to want to stay.

Whats the answer? I dont know but I better be of and get the Euromillions ticket bought.

  5. I dont know what the rules are nowadays on use of U-21's. Is it still the same that you have to have at least three in the matchday line-up?

I'm also wondering if the reason for not having a couple against County had anything to do with the fact they had spent the week being coached for U-20 v Motherwell taking place the following day. I cant honestly see the reason having anything to do with bonuses. These are budgeted for and had we a full squad available the bench would have had the required number eligible for any possible reward. I also wonder whether those who are still on youth contracts or whatever they are called nowadays (old S-form) are entitled to any sort of bonus. Finally, it comes to mind that clubs are actually paid incentives to have developing youths in line-up so surely not using someone is counter productive.

  6. I expect that the SNP's leader on Highland Council Maxine Smith will by now have been consigned to the St Kilda Gulag for presenting the non-separatist parties with a cast iron strategy for winning next May's Holyrood elections.

Because, according to the painted lady from Invergordon, all you have to do to get elected is to field doctors as your candidates and Bob's your Uncle! You're in!

This, apparently, is why Jean Davis defeated the SNP's hoped-for successor to Drew Hendry in the recent Highland Council by election.... she is actually DR Jean Davis. Post-election, the less than cerebral Ms Smith opined: "The fact that the Liberal Democrat lady was a doctor helped enormously as psychologically people trust doctors to help them."

Do simplistic thinking and lame excuses know no bounds within the SNP? It's an interesting and indeed highly hypocritical comment, though, since none come keener than the SNP to wave any medical or postgraduate qualifications in front of the electorate. For instance it's always DR Aileen MacLeod or DR Paul Monaghan (good Lord... what the HELL does he have a doctorate in?). So maybe airhead Invergordon beautician Ms Smith should get in on the act herself and acquire a Bachelor of Botox Therapy in advance of writing a thesis for a Doctorate of Dollops of Makeup. The University of the Highlands and Islands probably offers both courses - with very modest entrance requirements into the bargain.

And by the way, has anyone else noticed lately how rapidly our Cabinet Secretary For Dishing Out Cash To Music Festivals Fiona Hyslop seems to be physically morphing into the said Maxine Smith?:amazed:

  7. The club use one of, if not the, top legal firm in the country for preparing contracts (among other things)....I'd happily wager everything I have that if they've cleared something for inclusion in a contract, then it's legally sound.

Are you arguing that Ryan was contracted to the club for two more full seasons subject only to triggering the club's option ? If so, I think most fans would be very surprised and disappointed indeed that he was sold today for a figure that would suggest that is not the case.

I am of the belief that all contracts have to be scrutinised and approved by Football Association.

As for Ryan I think we got a very good deal out of this sale. He wasn't going to stick around for much longer anyway and as it is we get cash and the player.

  8. I'm quite sure that the club would not have stood in Yogi's way had he wanted to move. DU is not the right club at the moment for anyone trying to better their career prospects. They are being run by a man who's only keeping the club because of his fathers passion for it. Steven Thompson is not interested in anything other than Steven Thompson and has done nothing to continue the good work his father had done to build a successful club. Would any manager with high hopes want to be associated with DU at this time I wonder.

As to Yogi and ICT I'm quite sure there are ongoing talks about keeping the current management team and players together. As has been seen in the past we are not renowned for having those talks in public so I'll ignore the rumour and speculation and wait for the official statements.

  9. Charlesis probably quite well educated. He was, after all, a person who imparted knowledge to the young. Alas he is also a person of small stature with a very large quota of wind up skills. Even Charles cant be stupid enough to believe some of the things he writes on here.

He does have a great skill of turning one subject into another. This thread started out as a discussion on the merits of Corbyn and has turned into another 'fear of independence' thread.

  10. I think the one nation Police Force is an OK idea, as part of the UK.  In a separate Scotland it may feel the weight of across border crime to be a big problem, extra finances will have to be used to cover measures currently derived from Scotland Yard. I talk of Forensics , top detectives , training schools, communication equipment, standards of investigation , and the like, all covered from London, and would cost a separate force a bundle to buy in. Sometimes bigger is better but it has to be properly managed.

Control rooms( I speak from experience), need to be fairly local to problems. Money saving measures using computers etc are a recipe for mistakes. Going back to the RTA which has caused this uproar, a smaller local control room staffed by people with local knowledge might have averted the problem. The police force in my view is no longer an emergency service. response times are a joke, there is only the Fire Service which comes near to having an instant response. The Scottish government ( whatever the colour) needs to get a grip of policing.

I wasn't aware that Police Scotland were shutting down their forensic services Laurence http://www.spa.police.uk/forensic-services/

As to your other post on local knowledge for firefighters.....in your day it was probably a must but now we have a great invention known as GPS, the mainstay of satellite navigation.

  11. Any other club beware!! Inverness is a unique club that brings the best out of managers. But the facts are that when they move elsewhere they fail dismally. Steve Patterson to Aberdeen FAIL. John Robertson to Hearts FAIL. Craig Brewster to Dundee United FAIL. Terry Butcher to Hibs FAIL.

  12. I've heard £600k is agreed, if true that's a ******* joke

I think that is fair. They are not going to pay a million when they can sign him on a pre-contract in 4 months.

If we couldn't agree a new deal for Christie, I would fancy our chances leaving it to a court to decide what is a fair settlement for training compensation.

    • Ryan Gauld - sold for £3 mil
    • James McCarthy - sold for £1.2 mil
    • Stuart Armstrong - sold for £2 mil

Both McCarthy and Armstrong have been awarded PFA and SFWA young player of the year awards, respectively.

With Christie being SFWA young player of the year 2014/15, I think a good lawyer could easily make a very fair argument that > £1 mil is fair compensation.

Training compensation and market value are completely different things. I'm not even sure we'd get into 6 figures for the former.

I seem to remember a figure of £5000 a year for every year the player was signed by the club as being the level of compensation. Dont remember where I got that from but think it came out in some tribunal. The better outcome in any deal, and bear in mind that none of us actually know what Celtic have offered, is that a decent level of sell on fee is agreed.

I 'disregard' the 'one-year-option' when updating the 'Contract Situation' thread.
Utterly ridiculous clause in a contract. If say, Dani Lopez had a 'one-year-option' on his contract, but we decided to release him at the end of the season, I don't think he could stay here and claim a wage for another season. We can't just use it when it suits us.
As much as I agree with virtually everything OCG posts, in this case, I beg to differ - Ryan is out of contract in the summer!

If he goes and we get him and Stokes on loan, then 20% of our outfield team will be ineligible to play agains Celtic.

I assume sponge bob square head John Collins will be in the media how this helps create the strong opposition they need to avoid getting regularly pumped out of the Champions League

That is entirely dependant on lending club. There are many examples where players are permitted to play against their employers. Indeed we ourselves brought on Fetai at Ibrox. It was also reported in local press that Celtic gave permission for the lad Fisher to play against them but Tommy Wright felt it was too soon after him coming to St J.

  13. Mckay is heading for Dundee United according to The Sun. £200k fee agreed with Wigan.

Might be prudent to wait until the story appears in a newspaper before giving any weight to it.

Of course the Sun is not a newspaper.

Latest rumour on radio Tay is that Hibs are also bidding for him.
