Inverness CT -V- Motherwell - Report

Steelmen win thriller
Motherwell won the battle to retain third spot in the SPL winning by the odd goal in three.  Gow and a deflected Blackman effort put Well on their way to victory in an entertaining match.  A crisp Stuart Duff strike reduced the deficit in the last quarter, but it was too little too late again as the Manager of the Month curse left Butcher's men pointless despite a late surge which almost earned them a point.  But it was not to be as Motherwell held on to ensure they remained the best of the rest.  Referee's are in the spotlight just now, and it is no wonder when you see some of the baffling decisions being dished out.

Davie got the short straw and his forfeit is todays match report
Beer and football. After a couple of weeks absence, those two inseparable goodies returned to be sampled at or around Tulloch Caledonian stadium. Fans turned out in their thousands, and a week that saw Terry Butcher manager of the month and awarded a doctorate would surely culminate in Caley sitting proudly in third place in the SPL.
As is so often the case, these things never go to plan. Within five minutes, it had turned to fear and bootball as the claret and amber set out their stall. For such an archaically described side, there was nothing old fashioned about their play as they employed a system that spread play wide to Humphrey and Blackman who provided quality ball to Sutton etc. Such was the ease that they did this with in the first half that Caley fans grudgingly found much to admire about them. Ryan Esson could not have shared their point of view, being called upon to muster the first of several excellent stops from Sutton within the first ten minutes. The pressure continued, the aforementioned Humphrey's being the first SPL player this season to cause Shinnie such grave concern as he was ripped apart down the right. It wasn’t all one sided, however, and Foran passed up a glorious chance on twenty minutes. It heralded a spell of Inverness pressure that culminated 5 minutes later in a scrambled clearance from a Hayes corner. That was about as good as it got in the first half, as in 32 minutes, Gow drifted into the six yard box to power a header low to Esson’s left. The keeper somehow clawed the ball back out, but the stand side linesman had signalled a goal which the ref concurred with. It will be interesting to see a replay, as it seemed a goal from a North stand vantage point but if it was a save, it was of the Gordon Banks/ Pele variety. Whatever, there were no complains about 0-1. Things were to get worse however, as in 42 minutes, Blackman clattered into a challenge come shot with Munro, all of thirty yards out. The ball squirted upwards off both, over Esson and came to rest in the Caley net. 2-0, and the seeds of defeat were sown.
Half Time 0-2
As ever, half time brings an opportunity to reflect, ignore reality and substitute it with hope. This Inverness fans duly did, until the second 45 restarted in a carbon copy of the first. Butcher responded with the first change of the game, Morrison coming on for Odhiambo in 51 minutes. A change of shape was evidently called for, with Foran playing up front with Rooney. An almost immediate improvement commenced, with Motherwell being pushed back for the first time in the game. Half chances came and went, Foran being pulled up for offsides and Hayes going reasonably close. For all that Caley huffed and puffed and Rooney and Foran created space, it was hard to see where any end result would come from. Foran was pulled on 68 minutes, and looked slightly miffed as he trotted standwards. Shane Sutherland arrived, but his fireworks were a day late. They were effective though, as he produced a great meandering run and pass to put Rooney in on 65 minutes. The finish deserved better. It looked as if pressure would come to naught when, of all people, Duff unleashed a tremendous howitzer of a shot from near 30 yards in 74 minutes that buried itself happily beyond Randolph. Game most definitely on. Inverness started their best period of the game after that, with equalising opportunities falling to Rooney and Hayes. Nick Ross went close and Inverness pressed until the 90 minutes had come and gone. In truth, their goal had come too late to haul a result out of the fire.
So the match finished 1-2, and the overwhelming opinion from around the north stand was that it was a close affair against the best footballing side to visit these parts this season. In the end, what separated the sides was a fluke of a goal that on another day would have landed in the car park. Man of the match was most definitely Ryan Esson (again) How many goals has he prevented this year? I'm sure though, he would trade all manner of MotM awards for one little bit of well deserved recognition from the national side. C'mon, Levein, there's a friendly coming up against the Faroes. Do the right thing.
At least we don’t support Aberdeen.

Inverness CT -V- Motherwell - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Well up for it
Motherwell are up in the Highland capital this weekend for a clash which could determine who will be third in the SPL come tea time on Saturday.  Both clubs have made a positive start to the season and Well boss Craig Brown will be looking to avenge last seasons Scottish Cup defeat at the hands of Caley Thistle.   Terry Butcher, one time Motherwell manager, will be looking to get the home record matching the magnificent away form shown by his insurgents and keep Inverness in the top half of the league.  A win would cap a great week for Doctor Butcher, who has received an honorary degree of doctor of sport from Southampton Solent University.  The 77 times capped Doc, is a regular guest lecturer on Solent’s applied sport science courses.  A fitting award for our leader who has done his share of raising the profile of Inverness Caledonian Thistle, on and off the park.  In fact Terry's all gold, and his week just got even better, as news of him being awarded Clydesdale Bank Manager of the Month for October filters through.  Maybe he should by some lottery tickets as well.
Last weekend saw Inverness extend their unbeaten away run with a deserved draw at Ibrox.  Out of the blue, Maurice Edu had opened the scoring after flumoxing everyone in the stadium, including himself, but there was no questioning the quality of the strike as he half volleyed a stunning sixteen yard shot, right out of the meat of the bat beyond the reach of an outstretched Esson.  It had to be something special to get past the in form keeper and it was.  But, Inverness are nothing if not resilliant these days and after weathering the expected onslaught, we started to carve open the Gers rearguard with astonishing regularity, mainly through the dynamic Jonny Hayes and the equaliser was coming.  Alan McGregor made an outstanding save from a Foran header but he could do nothing to stop super sub Eric Odhiambo squaring the match inside the last ten minutes.  Terry Butcher could not lavish enough praise on his squad after the point gained and will be looking forward to a taste of claret & amber.
Motherwell's last game was a Lanarkshire derby defeat at home to ICT's bogey side, Hamilton.  The steelmen missed an opportunity to level the game when Tomas Cerny saved Tom Hateley's spot kick.  The diminutive Nigel Hasselbaink had scored the decisive goal via the post to earn Accies a vital three points and stop Motherwell from creating a gap in third place.  Craig Brown was disappointed with the first half performance although the second half showing from Well gave him cause for optimism  this week, but he would like to see their dominance and possession turned into goals.
Ginger Jaggy has been researching this one and here are his views prior to the match.
Well what a Halloween that was, and hopefully Christmas can come early this Bonfire weekend, as Inverness Caledonian Thistle look to scale the dizzy heights to third place; I hope we don't get a nose bleed.  Motherwell the current tenants of third place travel North to face our very own ICT who are in fine fettle this season.  A lot of people might have looked on this game as a bounce back, had we been beaten by Rangers in Glasgow, which would have been no disgrace, but we defied the odds and returned to the Highlands with a hard earned point last weekend.  That was one of the most accomplished performances by a Caley Thistle side, and ranks with performances of yesteryear, like Feb 8th2000, and Celtic in the SPL at 2-0 down to win 3-2, and of course the numerous victories and draws that we have managed to take from Ibrox in the past.  We seem to be making a habit of nicking points from the Old Firm.  Halloween weekend was a great day out for everyone connected to Caley Thistle.  Rangers were looking to equal their best start to a season in 112 years.  And it looked as if it would happen as they took an early lead thanks to Maurice Edu.  At this stage most teams would fold and Rangers would stroll to victory.  But we are made of sterner stuff these days.  With the tactics spot on from Terry and Mo, we gave it a go, and in the second half played with no fear as we looked to take something away from Glasgow.  In the end, super sub Eric Odhiambo gave us a fantastic point and meant that we became the first team in Scotland to take anything from Rangers this season. It could have been even better, Richie Foran had a wonderful header brilliantly saved by Allan McGregor and then right at the death a great chance for Jonny Hayes was spurned as he lost his composure at the vital point.  We could have won but it still was a superb point.
Head to head Now to this week and our opponents Motherwell who make the trip up North on Saturday. Motherwell are currently one point ahead of us.  They have played some effective football this season and deserve to be in the top six, but we all know Terry Butcher would love to get one over his old club and move us ahead of them in the table.  This will be a difficult game as Well will be smarting after their surprise home defeat to Hamilton last week; they won’t want a repeat of that this weekend.  Craig Brown has built up a very good young team, even with the loss of super striker Lukas Jutkiewicz who was outstanding for them last season while on loan from Everton.  This season Jamie Murphy has been on fire for Motherwell so he will be one to watch, alongside John Sutton and ex Falkirk and Rangers forward Alan Gow.  Another one to keep an eye on is midfielder Chris Humphrey who has been a revelation in the centre this season.  Last weeks 1-0 defeat did come as a shock but they will be tough opponents in Inverness as their away form is also formidable.  Our home form has improved with us being unbeaten in two games after defeat in our first three.  Last season we beat Motherwell at home in the Scottish cup 2-0, the memorable moment was a wonder strike by Dougie Imrie to make it 2-0.  That ended up being his last goal and game for Caley Thistle before he made the move up to the SPL with Hamilton.  Motherwell is leading the head to head records as well. The teams have met 18 times in the SPL with Motherwell having the upper hand with 10 wins to our 6. There has been 2 draws where the last one came in the bottom six crunch match at Fir Park when we lead for so long and whichwould have all but made us safe from relegation. As it was we conceded and the rest is history.
Form this season
Coming into this game both teams are on an impressive run of form.  Caley Thistle has one of the best squads we have ever assembled and that is shown in our performances and results this season.  From our first 10 matches we have picked up a creditable 15 points from a possible 30. We are 5 unbeaten going into this game, which means we never lost during the month of October.  I'm sure this will lead to more recognition for Doc Butcher, (sorted).  We are also still 11 months unbeaten away from home which is a wonderful achievement (if only our home form was as good, we would be sitting pretty).  Motherwell has also made a great start getting 16 points from 30, and apart from their blemish at the weekend were also on a good run. They recorded 3 wins and two defeats, the other loss being at Ibrox.  This region of the table is something they have become accustomed to, and they finished there three seasons ago.  At the end of the season Motherwell will be looking to challenge for one of the European places alongside Hearts and Dundee United (I would say us but let’s not get too carried away). But one thing for sure this game is shaping up to be a cracker.
***Latest Team News***
Doctor Butcher has no fresh injury worries to contend with.  His biggest problems now will be who to leave out of the starting eleven.  Eric Odhiambo staked his claim for a start with his goal at Ibrox, but he is aware of the situation and is prepared to bide his time.  At only 21, he has time on his side and realises the contributions others have made to the cause this season, but he is also eager to impress and he may get a start in the home game.  The same will apply to Youngsters Shinnie and Ross who have had a baptism of fire in the SPL.  It's tough decisions ahead for Terry Butcher when his treatment table list shortens.  Cox, Blumenshtein, Innes, Proctor and Gillet are all still short of fitness for this one.
Craig Brown was disappointed to lose last week and may freshen up his eleven.  Promising Scotland U21 star Jamie Murphy has been struggling but would add some urgency to the attack alongside Nick Blackman and Chris Humphrey.  John Sutton could push for a  start, he was a sub last weekend.  Keith Lasley is desperately trying to make this one.  He pulled his hamstring a couple of weeks ago against Dundee United and is keen to get back on the park.  Striker Esteban Casagolda has not recovered from his knee injury and is unlikely to feature.
Prediction This will be a difficult game for us to continue our good early form in the SPL this season.  Motherwell will be smarting from last weeks shock defeat in the Lanarkshire derby, but generally have been in excellent form this season.  Inverness has been a revelation this season, especially away from home.   The victory over Aberdeen was a boost, and will have given the boys confidence at home.  The St Johnstone result will also have helped because we didn’t play well, especially in the first half, but managed to secure a draw and maybe create some momentum at home.  The draw at Ibrox was massive and will give the team confidence wherever they play.  I believe we will sneak this one as I think the boys are on a roll and will want to fight hard for that third spot and improve on the erratic home form.
Inverness 2-1 Motherwell, is the vision in ginger jaggies crystal balls.

Just what the Doctor Ordered

Teaser Paragraph:
Fresh from his success in being awarded a Doctorate in Sports from Southampton's Solent University earlier in the week, Terry has added another award to his mantelpiece as he picks up the Clydesdale Bank Manager of the Month award for what has been a sizzling month
Terry Butcher is Clydesdale Bank Premier League Manager of the Month for October after the club went through the month undefeated.
He received his award at a photocall at Tulloch Caledonian Stadium on Thursday and said:"I'm very pleased and see it as a reward for the whole team for their performances. We've done well but it's important that we maintain momentum in our next two games when Motherwell and then St Johnstone come to Inverness ."
Caley Jags started the month with that 2-0 home win over Aberdeen then drew 1-1 with St Johnstone, also at Inverness . They then pulled off a 2-1 victory at Kilmarnock followed by their shattering of Rangers' 100 per cent record in last weekend's 1-1 draw at Ibrox.
"Eleven months unbeaten in away games is a wonderful record but we're now looking to be more consistent at home", says Terry."Winning the award is a fine start to November and Maurice Malpas and I are grateful for the spirit and effort of the playing squad."

The Graduate starring Doc Butcher

Teaser Paragraph:
The Graduate
Inverness Caledonian Thistle manager Terry Butcher has added another prestigious string to his bow.  Mr Butcher was rewarded for his dedication to sport at Southampton Solent University.  He has been a regular guest lecturer on Solent’s applied sport science courses, and was amongst 2000 students at Southampton Guildhall celebrating their graduation.  Terry has been awarded an honorary degree as a doctor of sport.
Terence Ian Butcher won 77 caps for England and also captained his country, although born in Singapore.  He is known worldwide for his blood drenched image when sustaining a serious head injury during an international match, he returned to the game complete with mummified head bandages and blood drenched England shirt.  This epitomised his battling qualities and never say die attitude.  Doc Butcher has been an inspiration to many an athlete and he has put as much back into sport as he has taken out.  Since hanging up his boots, he has gone on to manage clubs across the United Kingdom, and a short spell down under.  As well as managing Inverness Caledonian Thistle, he is well known for his footballing summaries during live TV and radio commentaries, and has been a studio guest on many occasions.  Not short of a few words Terry seems to have put this ability to good use with his lecturing at Solent University.  He obviously honed this skill in the run in to the first division title with his Monty Pythonesque sermon from the main stand at Somerset Park, just a taste of what was to come.  He knows how to milk a crowd, but he also knows how to control the masses, his timing is impeccable and his delivery is second to none.  He is always upbeat during interviews and worth listening to, and this award is recognition for the amount of work he puts in for his sport.
From all at CTO, congratulations Doc Butcher.  You have taken ICT to a new level and once more raised the profile of this club by your actions.

Former Saints legends Matt Le Tissier, Mick Channon, Terry Paine and Lawrie McMenemy are previous recipients of the award so Doc Butcher is in good company.  Other celenrities to have been honoured by Southampton Solent University are Australian cricketer Shane Warne; would he have been a spin doctor?  Busty gardener Charlie Dimmock was honoured in 2009 and former breakfast presenter Fiona Phillips has also been recognized.

Rangers -V- Inverness CT - Report

Eric's bundle of joy.

Substitute Eric Odhiambo kept Inverness' unbeaten away run going with a late equaliser at Ibrox after Maurice Edu had given Rangers the lead early in the first half with a thumping shot after mis-controlling the ball.  With nine minutes left, Eric Odhiambo bundled the ball home to square the match. Richie Foran and Jonny Hayes spurned great opportunities to take all three points up the A9 and Rangers keeper Alan Macgregor kept the score down with the save of the day from Foran's downward header as Butchers boys looked very accomplished on the big stage.  The late leveller was no more than Inverness deserved after soaking up some first half pressure from the home side, and displayed some attacking options of their own in the second half with Jonny Hayes shredding the defenders at will.

Unbeaten spoiled the Unblemished at Ibrox as Rangers dropped their first points of the season to Inverness.  Rangers were looking to head towards a 112 year record start to the season, and Inverness were looking to preserve a proud unbeaten away record stretching back to the heady days of the first division last November.  Something had to give and it was the Gers faultless start that came to an end.
Rangers lined up with McGregor restored to the gloves, and a back line of Broadfoot, Weir, Bougherra and the unfortunate Papac (more later).  The midfield saw Davis, McCulloch, Weiss and Edu, with Lafferty and the prolific Miller up front.  The visitors started with one change from the Kilmarnock game which meant that McCann replaced Odhiambo and went in at right back which allowed Stuart Duff to bolster the midfield alongside Russell Duncan.  Youngsters Graeme Shinnie and Nick Ross started and new dad Grant Munro and Ross Tokely were the centre backs. Jonny Hayes (see Papac) and Richie Foran were the providers for a lone Adam Rooney.  Who else but the magnificent Ryan Esson kept goal for ICT and he made a number of important saves blocks and interceptions throughout the game.
By kick off a vocal Caley Thistle support were on their seventeenth rendition of “Caley Thistle Champions”, no doubt aided by the pre-match aperitif’s in Brechins, one of Govan’s finest hostelries, and even the Immortal Howden Ender made it back to Ibrox in time for kick off, this time with his tickets in his pocket.  Hemmed in to the wee triangle in the corner, the four hundredish away fans were creating more atmosphere than 43,000 bears.  Naelifts turned up looking for trouble, but as he pointed out, what’s the problem.
Inverness kicked off in bright sunshine on a lush Ibrox pitch and started the game briskly forcing Rangers onto the back foot.  Just when the away support thought we had settled the better, Rangers broke the deadlock with an unusual goal to say the least.  A probing ball into the edge of the box found Edu in between the defenders, he tried to bring the ball down but missed it, however, to his delight, when he recovered from his embarrassment, the ball was still there, right in front of him and he lashed an unstoppable shot high past a diving Esson into the keepers top left corner.  Brilliant finish, but a somewhat fortuitous break for Rangers, and despair for Inverness who had matched the champions up to that moment.  Rangers were now on the ascendancy and Esson stopped a Miller effort after a brisk run at the Inverness defence.  More home pressure saw Weir and Lafferty head harmlessly wide.  Richie Foran was booked after catching scorer Edu with a tough challenge on the halfway line, the Rangers player failing to shrug off the knock staying in the dressing room at half time, along with Weiss.  With Rangers being unable to shake off Inverness, the visitors grew in confidence and the tricky pocket rocket Jonny Hayes was about to start his own Halloween on the unsuspecting Papac.  As half time approached the Highlanders began to encroach on the Rangers half of the field and this was to be the theme for the second half.  Almost on half time, Adam Rooney smuggled the ball from Weir and almost made them pay for slackness at the back, but the ball broke away from him for a goal kick.
Half Time: Rangers 1-0 Inverness CT.
With the start of the second half, you could sense a change in presence.  Inverness began confidently and Weir and Foran clashed in the box before young Nick Ross saw the headlines in front of him as he lashed a volley wide.  Naismith and Fleck were the Rangers replacements at half time.  The influential Steven Davis came close for Rangers as they looked to kill off the Highland uprising, but as play was now raging from end to end Alan McGregor stole the show with an outstanding save.  Jonny Hayes turned Papac inside out and sat a cross up for Foran to meet as he raced into the box.  His downward header was text book, but McGregor foiled him as he threw an arm upwards to tip the ball over the bar.  From the resultant corner, Foran again looked to score but he shot wide from an angle into the side netting.  Esson tipped a Fleck shot over as the game raged on but it was at the other end that the goal came.  Foran who had come alive in the second half dispossessed Broadfoot and after some neat interplay laid the ball into the box where substitute Odhiambo produced his own bundle of joy as he rolled the ball through McGregor for a deserved equaliser.  Cue a rendition of “that’s why we’re champions” breaking out from the shoehorned Inverness supporters, some who even bared their chests, what a Dude.  No more than Inverness deserved and they could have snatched it at the end had Papac’ Nemesis Jonny Hayes not tried for glory instead of squaring the ball.  Another teasing run saw him drive into the box and from an acute angle he tried to do the difficult thing and curve it into the far corner, however the ball drifted just over.  In a frenetic finish both teams tried to get the winner, but a draw was the final outcome.
Full Time: Rangers 1-1 Inverness CT.
No failures for Inverness.  Grant Munro produced the goods on and off the park and he gets my vote for MotM, ably assisted by Rossco at the heart of the defence.  Jonny Hayes was an absolute star as he mesmerised Papac, who will still be unwinding today.
Great support in midfield and everyone played their part, with Duff being one of the coolest players on the park, and youngsters Ross and Shinnie showing why the future is bright, the future is Caley Thistle.  As I said, no failures, only shining stars, so a Blue Peter Badge for everyone, including the supporters and referee.

Rangers -V- Inverness CT – Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Unblemished v Unbeaten
Unbeaten seems to be a common theme between the sides for this weekends SPL match at Ibrox.  Rangers are fresh from their unbeaten, in fact, unblemished start to their league campaign while Inverness remain unbeaten in the leagues away from home since last  November.
Penalties were the talking points of last weeks matches for both sides.  Russell Duncan correctly adjudged to have been brought down by a rash challenge from Killie's Momo Sissoko. Harsh maybe, but the ref was given no option, while at Parkhead Willie Collum was put on the spot after Kirk Broadfoot apparently saw a leg trip him up in the box.  The decision by Collum has seen threatening phone calls made to the whistler and Neil Lennon calling for clarification over the incident.  So what's new, an Old Firm manager upset by a penalty decision going against them; give us a break.  Who would be a referee or assistant.  Constant barracking from frenzied fans and pressure pot decisions being made without the help of HD telly and slow-mo to make things easier for you.........no thanks.  It's no surprise that the number of top class referees in this country are in decline as they find themselves thrust into the spotlight for doing their job.  Anyway, the aftermath of the penalty decisions were excellent away victories for Rangers and Inverness.
And so to this weeks clash at Ibrox where you will have the luxury of a combination preview from the pens of Ginger Jaggy, (he assures me he spellchecked it), & Alternative Maryhill (he assures me it's a brief one).
On Saturday, writes Ginger Jaggy, the CaleyThistle fanfare makes its way down the A9 to Glasgow for our first away league trip to one of the old firm. This weekend we go to Ibrox to face league leaders and reigning champions Rangers. Most people will look at this match and expect another Rangers victory as they haven’t lost a point all season. But on the weekend of Halloween the travelling faithful will hope that some ghostly goings on happen, and that Rangers end up being haunted by that memorable night 2 seasons ago. On the 4th of March 2009 we made the long trip to Ibrox in grave danger of relegation. Rangers in contrast were on their way to a 52nd League title and so the odds were stacked against us getting anything. The game went like most people expected, Caley Thistle sat in and Rangers attacked and with a little luck we would hold out, (take note Craig Levein), but in the dying seconds with a little help from David Weir we snatched a most unlikely but memorable three  points. The goal scorer was Hearts bound Ian Black from the penalty spot which gave us all hope that we would stay up. As it turned out, it was in vain and we were eventually relegated, but that night will live with the many supporters who travelled down on a midweek evening to be rewarded by a wonderful result.
Ones to remember
In 2005 on the 29thof October a Craig Dargo goal was good enough to earn a point at Ibrox with a 25 yard dipper, but it was the season after that we really made our mark against Rangers. For years it was Celtic who shivered when the name Inverness Caley Thistle was brought up, but now Rangers were also getting the colly wobbles as we remained unbeaten all season against the Ibrox side.  The first result was another fantastic shock 1-0 victory at Ibrox with ex Caley Thistle striker Graeme Bayne scoring the only goal in October’s encounter. Later on that season in Inverness we came from behind to claim a second victory over Rangers. A Nacho Novo penalty was first canceled out by a great finish by Darren Dods just on half time. The winner was worthy of  the champions league final let alone an SPL match. John Rankin's 30 yard belter was enough for a second victory over Rangers and ended the tenure of Rangers manager Paul Le Guen. Walter Smith took charge for a second spell and even he couldn’t get the better of us that season as again thanks to Dargo we stole a point and ended the year unbeaten against the most successful side in the Scottish game.
Form Guide The form of these two sides is unbelievably good coming into this game. Caley Thistle as we all know has had a storming start to the season after winning promotion. We go into this game on the back of a four games unbeaten run, with three wins and a draw. It all started back at Paisley, and continued with victory over Kilmarnock last weekend. We even managed to throw in a pair of games undefeated at home with a victory over Aberdeen and a draw against St Johnstone. But it is our away form that is sustaining us. It is now eleven months since our last defeat on the road on league duty. But, we all know it won’t be easy as the defending champions have not dropped a single point and go into this on the back of last weekend’s great 3-1 result at Celtic Park in the first old firm game of the season. The scintillating form of Kenny Miller who has really filled the boots of Kris Boyd and cannot stop scoring could be a major factor in the outcome of this one.
Ginger Jaggies prediction This will be a very tough game, probably the toughest so far this season. Inverness are on a good run of form and have shown that we can’t be taken lightly this season. I think Butchers boys will put up a brave fight which will be backed by our fantastic vocal away support who on so many occasions has been our 12thman this season. But unfortunately Im going to say Rangers will win this one. Maybe by the odd goal, but I hope to be proved wrong on Saturday, and that we can take a point, or even better, all 3 points (with a disputed penalty). I hope for everyone who is going, including me that it will be another memorable day and that everyone will have a great time see you there people.
GJ says 1-0 Rangers win
And Alternative Maryhill looks forward to the game like this
Unstoppable force versus immovable object? Saturday sees the meeting of two of the SPL’s form teams. Inverness Caledonian Thistle have recorded three wins and a draw in their past four league games and are unbeaten away from home this season: in fact, the club’s unbeaten away run stretches back to November 2009. Rangers, meanwhile, have a 100% record in the league this season and are also unbeaten in the Champions’ League despite being drawn in a group where few people gave them any chance of success. The current records of each club have come as a surprise in some quarters. Despite Caley Thistle’s tremendous run to the first division title, many assumed they would struggle with the transition back to SPL football and few would have predicted that, with the first quarter of the season almost gone, they would be tied for fourth place in the table. Rangers, too, faced plenty of scepticism at the start of the season: their parlous financial situation, the fact that their biggest rivals spent a portion of last season imploding under Tony Mowbray, the loss of Kris Boyd and Kevin Thomson in the summer, and the money spent by Neil Lennon to rebuild Celtic, had plenty believing that the Ibrox side would play second fiddle to their Glasgow rivals this season. So far this hasn’t proved to be the case: possibly people had underestimated the role relative continuity in personnel plays in allowing a side to become stronger. After their start to the season and their win in the first old firm derby last Saturday, Rangers’ players can feel justified in going into this week’s game brimming with confidence. Yet somewhere in the back of their minds must lie the uneasy knowledge that the last side to win a league game at Ibrox was a certain team from the Highlands.
So, Rangers have a demon to lay to rest. And for Inverness supporters, what better place is there to visit on Halloween weekend than the venue popularly known among Scottish football fans as Castle Greyskull? Not only do Rangers have one of the living dead, David Weir, playing at centre back; they also have a full back, Stephen Whittaker, who is possessed of a face that you could imagine leering out of the gloom in a ghost train, and another, Kirk Broadfoot, who appears to be carved from a root vegetable and who, in his last appearance, tricked the referee and treated the Rangers supporters to a match-deciding penalty. Grimly fiendish indeed.
A Very Brief History of the Fixture
There is a certain irony in the fact that ICT are probably still best known for a certain victory over Celtic, when in fact the Inverness team’s record against Celtic’s arch-rivals is far better. Indeed, in the past twenty years, very few Scottish clubs can have taken more of the available league points in matches against Rangers than Caley Thistle. In fifteen league meetings, Rangers have won eight times, ICT three times and four matches have been drawn. Even more surprisingly, two of those Inverness wins and three of the draws occurred at Ibrox, meaning that Rangers have only managed to beat Caley Thistle three times in eight attempts at Ibrox. Before we get too carried away, it should be noted that most of ICT’s good results against Rangers came during the club’s first three seasons in the SPL: between August 2007 and January 2009, Rangers won five consecutive fixtures against ICT, scoring fourteen times without reply. Yet, as mentioned above, the last time the clubs met, Terry Butcher’s team shocked title-chasing Rangers by going to Ibrox on a wet Wednesday night and winning 1-0. This game, and the previous win at Ibrox in October 2006, were masterclasses in patient defensive football and opportunity-grabbing; and the euphoria of watching Graeme Bayne’s and Ian Black’s goals go in, and watching the collective sag around 95% of Ibrox, are memories that will stay for me forever. Yet undoubtedly the jewel in the crown was that 2-1 win at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium on 27th December 2006, where ICT outclassed Rangers for long spells, gave Allan McGregor one of his most difficult games of the season, and then in the last minute, when it seemed Caley Thistle’s efforts would go unrewarded, John Rankin cut through the Rangers defence and hit an unstoppable 30-yard shot into the top corner. Bliss. A wee reprise of that would go down very nicely this weekend
Prediction
Realistically, can Caley Thistle expect to take anything from this game? The answer is: probably not. Rangers now are arguably a stronger side than any of the previous sides beaten by ICT; they have two strikers in superb form and a defence that has matched some of the best in Europe this season; and Walter Smith is unlikely to let his players underestimate the threat that Caley Thistle present again. Yet we can be sure that Terry Butcher will have the team full of self-belief, the counter-attacking game will suit ICT’s formation, and in the shape of Hayes, Odhiambo, Rooney and Foran, Caley Thistle have players that can cause the likes of Whittaker and Broadfoot problems. So maybe... just maybe...

***Latest Team News***
Inverness are still a bit thin on the ground for back up players with Proctor, Cox, Innes, Gillet and Blumenshtein all still short of fitness and the liklihood is that the same squad that went to Kilmarnock will also turn up at Ibrox.  Youngsters Nick Ross and Graeme Shinnie have been deputising very effectively and their reward may well see both of them line up in Govan.  Richie Foran is still gaining match sharpness and his Irish partners Rooney and Hayes will be looking to perform well on the big stage.  Stuart Duff may well get the nod ahead of Kevin McCann at right back and Russell Duncan has earned the right to start in midfield.
Rangers came through their CIS Cup game relatively unscathed and have no fresh injury worries for the visit of the Highlanders.  Sporting some personnel changes for the cup game, the Gers eventually disposed of  Kilmarnock with goals from Andrew Little and Steven Naismith either side of the interval to earn themselves a semi-final spot. Alexander started the cup game in goals but I would expect form keeper Alan Macgregor to be restored between the sticks, and with Walter Smith determined to keep the unblemished record intact, that should ensure that the Gers start with their strongest line up.  It appears that James Beattie has aggravated an old hip injury and will miss out.  Sasa Papac has recovered from an ankle injury and Kyle Lafferty has got over his bout of sickness.
