Inverness CT v Hamilton Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
This Saturday, we welcome last season’s division one Champions, Hamilton Academical, to the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium for their first game here since February 2003. Hamilton and Inverness are being heavily tipped by pundits and so called “experts” to be fighting it out at the bottom of the table at the end of the season, so it is with more than a little irony that this is a top of the table clash with ICT having recorded their first ever competitive win over Aberdeen last week and Hamilton beating Dundee Utd who are favoured in some camps to be pushing for third spot in the SPL this season.
INVERNESS CT v HAMILTON ATH
Tulloch Caledonian Stadium, Inverness
Saturday 16th August, 3pm

OTHER SPL FIXTURES
16/08/08 Hibernian v Falkirk Motherwell v Aberdeen Rangers v Hearts St Mirren v Kilmarnock 17/08/08 Dundee Utd v Celtic (14:00)
PAST MEETINGS
The teams have met each other on only 3 occasions in the past, twice in the Scottish FA Cup and once in the League Challenge Cup and Inverness CT currently lead 2-1 on victories with no games drawn.
22/02/03 – Scottish FA Cup - ICT 6 v 1 Hamilton
The last game back in 2003 produced seven goals with ICT running out convincing 6-1 winners after conceding an early goal to the Accies. Martin Bonnar scored for Accies while some fondly remembered heroes settled the Scottish Cup tie in favour of Inverness. Doubles from Dennis Wyness and Barry Robson and single strikes by Paul Ritchie and Stuart McCaffrey ensured an easy victory for the Highlanders.
Changed days for both clubs as Accies were in the second Division then and Inverness were on the up in the First Division. From the Inverness squad that day, only four remain playing at the club, Tokely, Duncan, McBain and Grant Munro, who has gone on to captain the club for the second consecutive season.
24/08/99 – League Challenge Cup - Hamilton 0 v 3 ICT
25/01/97 – Scottish FA Cup - ICT 1 v 3 Hamilton
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Dougie Imrie (ICT) – It’s hard to believe that this guy was only playing for Junior side Lanark Utd back in 2006 before being signed for Clyde. Whilst at Lanark he scored an amazing 79 goals in 138 games, something not repeated during his time at Clyde, but when he did score they were top drawer. Imrie scored his last goal for Clyde in a match v Hamilton before signing for ICT and we’ll be hoping to see a repeat of that. Imrie carries a bit of history with the Hamilton fans following an accident involving McCabe back in 2006. Whilst most accept that the incident involved no malice, this is football and I’m sure some of the visiting fans will want to try and remind him of what happened.
Richard Offiong (Hamilton) – Started his career as a youth at Newcastle United. He was capped for England at U20 level and has been round a few clubs, including a loan deal to Motherwell in 2003 where he made 9 appearances. He joined Hamilton in 2006 and has scored 32 goals in 62 appearances. Offiong netted his first senior hat-trick when Hamilton ran out 3-0 winners at New Douglas Park against Dunfermline Athletic in 2008.
TEAM NEWS
Inverness CT – David Proctor is still unavailable for selection as he’s serving the second of a 2 match ban. With Grant Munro also in doubt after receiving a knock in last weeks match then Djebi-Zadi could be handed his first competitive start for the Caley Jags at Tulloch Caledonian Stadium this weekend.
Craig Brewster can choose from a likely squad of :-
Fraser, Tokely, McGuire, McBain, Black, Barrowman, Imrie, Duncan, Cowie, Hastings, Esson, Djebi-Zadi, Sutherland, Wilson, McAllister, Wood, Vigurs…
With the possible addition of Adam Rooney who looks set to join the club any time now.
Hamilton Ath – Billy Reid has a full squad to pick from with new signings Joel Thomas and Sebastian Sorsa pushing for first team starts. However, with Stevenson, McArthur and Graham all bagging goals for Hamilton last week then making any changes could prove difficult to justify. Billy Reid can choose from a likely squad of :-
Cerny, Stevenson, Easton, McLaughlin, Swailes, McCarthy, McArthur, Neil, Mensing, Offiong, Graham, Corcoran, Akins, Sorsa, Elebert, Thomas, Taylor, Murdoch.
CALEYD’s PREDICTION
This could prove to be a very entertaining and open game if last weeks results are anything to go by. Both teams seem more than willing to take the game to their opponents and both wasted very few opportunities in front of goal. ICT were the new boys themselves not all that long ago and we’ll know only too well that underestimating Hamilton would be dangerous, hopefully we’ve taken notes from their last game against Dundee Utd and won’t allow them the space and time on the ball that they had then. If we set out to upset their game plan and it works then I see no reason why we can’t come away with a 2 goal victory for the second week running.

Striker a Priority

Teaser Paragraph:
ICT manager Craig Brewster has told the Press and Journal that signing another striker to partner Pittodrie hero Andy Barrowman is still his main priority.
Originally, Brewster had been keen to sign the less than prolific Callum Elliot from Hearts or Ireland under-21 cap Adam Rooney (who impressed on a weeklong trial with Inverness), both on loan deals. However the financial demands of the respective clubs may well prove too much for Brewster and co's liking.
“I have always said I need another striker.”
“Graeme Bennett has been speaking to the director of football at Stoke City about Adam Rooney.
“We are still negotiating with him and it is looking doubtful we will have him for Saturday’s game against Aberdeen.
“I have not done anything further on Calum Elliot. It depends on what happens with Rooney.
Should deals for these two players fall through, Brewster may turn to less high-profile names. Brew is rumoured to be looking at St. Johnstone striker Steven Milne and Ugandan international forward Dan Wagaluka, both of whom are expected to be on considerably less than Elliot or Rooney.
A player that has certainly proven himself at a high level (he scored 23 goals in his time with Dundee), Milne, also a former Forfar and Plymouth player, sent shockwaves around Scottish football when his impressive brace (including a spectacular overhead kick) knocked out holders Rangers in the quarter finals of the 06/07 CIS Cup. The injury prone striker has managed 23 goals in 72 games for the Saints, with the Perthshire club expected to be looking for a fee to secure his services as Milne's current contract does not expire until the summer of 2010. A St. Johnstone fan described Milne as being "the best player in the first division" when he can stay free of the knee injuries that have plagued his career.
Dan Wagaluka currently ply's his trade with Uganda Revenue Authority SC (URA) the top team in Uganda (Ugandan Premier League Champions the last two years)and is one of the key men in the Ugandan national team. Originally linked with a move to Hearts where he would join up with fellow countryman David Obua, a URA official told the Daily Monitor (a high profile Ugandan news website) that ICT boss Craig Brewster has made enquiries about bringing the tricky forward to the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium. “Since our return from the Cecafa Club Championship in Tanzania, we have been in touch with Caledonian manager Craig Brewster. He wrote to me via mail and said he will be sending an invitation letter that will contain Wagaluka’s date of departure."

Aberdeen 0-2 Inverness CT - Report

First time for everything

The Caley Jags headed to Aberdeen looking for their first win in 18 competitive matches.  Andy Barrowman opened the scoring on 27 minutes, picking up on a through ball by Ross Tokely, which evaded the Aberdeen Defence, and slotting it home with ease.
Roy McBain then put the game beyond Aberdeen, scoring a great goal with his right foot...a great present for a man playing his 300th game for Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC.
The trip home along the A96 will likely be the happiest ICT Fans and Players will ever have had now that the Aberdeen Curse has been laid to rest...3 points on the board, and top of the league...for now at least.

Referee M Tumilty Attendance 12659 Man of the Match   18TH TIME LUCKY FOR CALEY AS BARROWMAN'S OFF THE MARK
The 9th of August was here and with it the start of the new SPL season. We’re entering our 5th SPL season and looking for only our 2nd opening day victory. So who do the SPL give us, Aberdeen! Would that prevent us from winning? No way! With many tipping us for relegation and Billy Dodds saying Aberdeen should beat teams like Inverness CT, there was only going to be one winner - a great game to open the season - and what a game it was.
Now that my home town is Aberdeen, I made the 30 minute walk to Pittodrie in plenty time, I thought, until it took forever to get my reserved tickets, due to the ticket office having them in the home support box and not checking there for ages after sending me all around the ground!! Thankfully I did not miss much.
I think Aberdeen should reduce ticket prices like Celtic do for restricted view. The amount of sea eagles flying about provides a restricted view like a pole is in your way!! It seemed worse in the 2nd half!!! Brewster’s first team selection of the new season didn’t bring many surprises. Barrowman played as a lone striker and Cowie played as an attacking midfielder with Dougie Imrie playing on the right.
Throughout the opening exchanges, Caley Thistle slowly crept into the game and Roy McBain had a decent chance blocked for a corner. A Scott Severin volley almost gave the hosts the lead but I believe it was McBain who saved us on the line. Jeffrey de Visscher had a great chance as well but Fraser managed to parry to safety.
"I cannot begin to describe just how good the ball from Tokely was to set up the goal - RiG "However on 27 minutes it was a debut goal for BARROWMAN!!!! Good play on the right with Imrie playing Tokely down the line and Tokely managing the perfect cross along the 6 yard line to evade the whole defence and find Barrowman who stuck a foot on it to open his goal scoring account for the Inverness Caledonian Thistle. The fans went berserk and the team looked delighted to take the lead.
Don Cowie did have a chance to double the lead just before half time but Langfield was quick out of his goals and his shot went wide.
Half time 1-0 to Inverness CT, and we're half way there.
The second half started with Aberdeen getting a corner in the very first minute. Was this going to be a long 2nd half? I think so. Darren Mackie should have scored against the club he went on loan to back in 2004, but his strike from the middle of the box went wide of the mark. Dougie Imrie then managed to cut in field and hit one that sailed agonisingly past the post.
I can't speak highly enough of Grant Munro today, he was absolutely magnificent and could be seen cajoling and urging his teammates as a captain should. - hislopoffsideagain
Aberdeen was starting to gather momentum a wee bit but it seemed our defence was equal to the task most of the time. Many a pass from the Dons went astray as their fans got frustrated. Dougie Imrie could have scored to make it 2-0 after a blunder from Langfield but from 20 yards the ball flew over the bar. Roy McBain then had a goal disallowed and I will need to have a look at the highlights to see if it was the correct decision or not.
Grant Munro made the challenge of the match though when Darren Mackie was on the left and cut it back past Fraser and all it was going to need was a tap in. But for the charging Munro who intercepted the goal saving challenge to put it behind for a corner.
Then with 88 mins on the clock it was hard working midfielder McBAIN who guaranteed our first ever win over Aberdeen. And on his 300th appearance for the Caley Jags, there was no better player to do it. We hit on the break with Imrie setting Roy clear and his 50 yard run was neatly finished by slotting the ball past the helpless Langfield. The fans went crazy, Brewster was delighted and the players looked ecstatic. A couple more minutes past and that was it, the full time whistle went and with it our first ever win over the Aberdeen.
The referee had an ok game but nothing special, and the linesman near our support didn’t have the greatest of games. £800 for the match? I will let you decide!!
Thanks for that stunner Roy, can you buy me a new mobile phone please. When the ball was on it's way to the sweet sweet back of the lovely juicy Dons net, in my youthful exuberance I (and a few hundred others) leapt to my feet and bounced around uncontrollably. At the apex of my orbit, my mobile phone slipped quietly out of my top pocket and landed at Uncle Albert's feet in the row in front... (During the war that often happened). Caley100 did a similar leap and his hands whisked the specs straight off the head of The Mantis in the row behind. (What a spectacle) The specs are OK I believe, but my mobile is goosed, the screen is burst. Anyway, great to see grown men and women united in unison and belief, belief that we will be top of the league (and you're no) even if only for a day, for to stick one on the Dons chin in their own backyard was worth the toothache and six hour round trip. I was there, yes, I was there the day we beat the Dons, something to remember when I am old........hmmnnn. - themannforthejob
A great team performance but a few players I thought deserve mention are Munro who had a solid game, McBain who worked hard all afternoon, Imrie who looked hungry for the ball, Cowie did well and Barrowman looked a handful. He reminds me of Bayne with his work rate and I think he could have a good season. Fraser looked good but sometimes he comes out when he shouldn’t and McGuire still worries me when running back. Brewster’s tactics were spot on with 5 man midfield. The fitness of the players told towards the end with McBain's 50 yard run.
A great start; 3pts, and one of the best matches I have ever been at. We were bound to beat them sometime, and the first time was always going to be a classic. Now let’s hope we kick start our home record with a win over newcomers Hamilton next week. Will we have any new signings before then? Only time will tell.

Munro to Captain ICT

Teaser Paragraph:
When ICT take to the field this afternoon against Aberdeen at Pittodrie they will be led out by Grant Munro who has been appointed Club Captain for the 2nd season running. Munro, one of the few players to come "through the ranks" at Inverness, was chosen by Craig Brewster to lead the side for the season after speculation that a new captain would be appointed in Munro's place.
Munro himself had left supporters wondering if he would be captain in a recent interview with the Inverness Courier where he had stated that he would give his full backing to whoever came in to succeed him. However, after captaining the side through most of the pre season friendlies, Brewster decided to stick with Munro who enjoyed his first season as captain at the start of the 2007 season.
Throughout last season Munro's defensive partnership with Phil McGuire came under the spotlight. Many fans pointed towards the loss of Darren Dod's as the main reason for Munro’s downturn in form but Munro told the *Press & Journal* that injury affected his game last season and he is eager to show Inverness fans that he can perform better and handle the responsibility of captain now that he is fully fit.

Aberdeen v ICT - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Here we are again, the start of August is upon us and with it the start of the new SPL season. With the fans optimistic more than ever it will be up to the 12 clubs to improve on their achievements last season and keep the punters happy. But will it be this easy? Will Celtic and Rangers pull away with ease again or will someone have the guts to put up a fight? Will the top six be decided on the last day of the split and will the relegation go down to the final minute of the season, unlike the anti climax of last season. Will Brewster be a hero or zero with the fans?
Considering he came in last season with the club down at the bottom, he did well with the run to December but then went on a dry spell and the season fizzled out to 9th place.
The signings have not exactly excited the fans. Andy Barrowman could prove to be a hit or miss after moving from across the bridge but I really do hope he does well. If we was to score a winner tomorrow it would definitely set himself up nicely for a good season. Lionel Djebi Zabi is another signing which could prove good or bad. Only on a 1 year deal suggests he will need to work hard to stay at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium beyond this season. Ryan Esson has also joined to give Fraser competition in goals, and will need to push Michael hard to get the No 1 jersey. Hopefully another couple will come in before the end of August, with Adam Rooney and a couple more being mentioned.
The away form must be improved, and goals have to come from somewhere after Marius Nicuale left the club.
No better place to start the season than against a team we have never beaten, Aberdeen. A win on the opening day could set us up very nicely.
So, to sum up Brewster; improve on last season and maybe a good cup run and you will be fine! Piece of cake!!

ABERDEEN v INVERNESS CT
Pittodrie Stadium, Aberdeen
Saturday 9th August @ 3pm
WEEK 1 FIXTURES
09/08/2008 Falkirk v Rangers (12:30pm) Aberdeen v Inverness CT Hearts v Motherwell Kilmarnock v Hibernian
10/08/2008 Celtic v St Mirren (12:30pm)
11/08/2008 Hamilton v Dundee Utd (7:45pm)
PAST MEETINGS
The teams have played a total of 17 times (12 League, 5 Cup) with 23 goals (12 Inverness CT, 27 Aberdeen) between them.
Inverness CT: 0 wins (0 League, 0 Cup) Draws: 7 (6 League, 1 Cup) Aberdeen: 10 wins (6 League, 4 Cup)
SOME PREVIOUS MEETINGS
08/08/1998 (League Cup 2nd Round) INVERNESS CT 0-3 Aberdeen: In the first game between the sides it was a Billy Dodds hat-trick that gave the top-flight side the win. Inverness CT was a 2nd Division side at the time.
20/02/2000 (Scottish Cup 4th Round) INVERNESS CT 1-1 Aberdeen: After the excellent achievements of beating Celtic at Parkhead in the previous round, the gift was a home-tie against Aberdeen which was screened live by Sky-Sports. Bobby Mann’s header looked as if it would have taken the Caley Jags through but Cato Gunviet scored with 10 minutes remaining meaning a replay was to be played. Both scorers got yellow cards during the match. Aberdeen won the replay 1-0.
16/10/2004 (SPL) INVERNESS CT 1-3 Aberdeen (Pittodrie): With all the media hype about Aberdeen playing away at Pittodrie was a joke before this game. Inverness were paying Aberdeen £30,000 for the day plus Aberdeen didn’t need to travel to Inverness. And plus they still got the victory thanks to 2 penalties. Roy McBain got the goal for Caley Thistle which was a great goal.
29/03/2008 (SPL) INVERNESS CT 3-4 Aberdeen: With Inverness CT on a bad run of form, any decent performance would be good. And even with 2 sending offs, Inverness CT were denied a point by another last gasp winner form the Dons. With the score at 2-2 at half time, Duncan was sent off, and Miller scored for Aberdeen. McBain pulled level only for Mcguire to score a sore winner. Munro was sent off after the game.
FACTS BETWEEN THE TEAMS
All League meetings between the teams have taken place in the SPL. Aberdeen are unbeaten in all 17 fixtures between the teams. The biggest win in the fixture was when Aberdeen won 4-1 on 31/10/2007 at home in the League Cup! I was unfortunately there and a repeat of that tomorrow will not be acceptable! If Inverness CT beat Aberdeen on Saturday I believe they will have beaten every team that has graced the SPL. There has only been 1 clean sheet in the last 7 fixtures. It is the first time these two have met on the opening day of the season. Inverness CT have met Livingston (A), Falkirk (A), St Mirren (H), Rangers (H). They have won 1 against Falkirk and lost the rest. Inverness have a knack for starting slowly in seasons. PLAYERS TO WATCH
Andy Barrowman (ICT): The new signing will be hoping to start his first competitive game for the club in style. He scored last week away to Burnley in the last pre-season game and has had a decent pre-season. Inverness CT fans will look to him to fill the gap left by Marius Niculae. Easy peasy then.
The youngsters (ICT): Its time for Brewster to use the youngsters on the fringes of the first team this season. Rory McAllister has had his chances before and most people believe he has failed to take them but after a couple hat-tricks in pre-season, maybe its confidence is all he needs and a bit of backing from the fans. Iain Vigurs and Guy Kerr could feature at some point. Also Zander Sutherland and Garry Wood who both had successful loan spells at 3rd division clubs last season.
TEAM NEWS
David Proctor is serving a 2 match suspension for Inverness CT so will not feature. Barrowman, Djebi-Zabi and Esson are all looking to kick off the ICT careers in style.
Tommy Wright, a new signing from Darlington is not likely to feature for Aberdeen, after only arriving on Friday after an injury with no match fitness.Zander Diamond is fit to play in the centre of defence.
FUTURE FIXTURES
Inverness CT v Aberdeen (Sat 20th Dec 2008) Aberdeen v Inverness CT (Sat 11th Apr 2009) -fixtures subject to change-
MY REALISTIC PREDICTION
Nothing would satisfy me more than us to beat Aberdeen for the first time. With it being the opening game of the season anything could happen and I am going for a 1-1 draw.

Cup Success in Dublin

Teaser Paragraph:
The Inverness Caley Thistle youngsters travelled to Dublin again this year to take part in the 6th Annual “Umbro Dublin Cup”.
Due to the age system in Ireland the U13’s took part in the U12’s group and faced St Joseph’s in the final. The game finished 1-1 and Inverness CT lifted the Cup following the penalty shoot out.
The U14’s (taking part in the U13’s group) were unlucky to lose out in the Semi-Final. Their match against FC Town finished 3-3 and things didn’t go their way and they missed out narrowly in the penalty shoot-out. They went on to play Shelbourne FC in the playoff Shield with the final score going 2-1 against them.
