Morton v Inverness CT Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Morton have had a curious season so far, excelling in cup competitions yet performing below-par to a Nick Faldo-esque extent in the league. Davie Irons no doubt thought he had escaped relegation struggles when he left Gretna for Cappielow midway through last season but his new sides start to the new league campaign has been abysmal. Morton haven't won a single match in the league, the nadir perhaps being a 5-0 defeat a few weeks back to an Airdrie side who prior to the game hadn't scored a goal all season. Their home form has been slightly better with one loss, to early First Division pace setters Livingston, and two draws but they are currently rooted to the bottom of the table with only Ross County within touching distance.
Despite the depressing league form, fans of the Ton will have been cheered by their exploits in the cup competitions. In four ties in both the Challenge and the CIS cups so far Morton have won all four and scored fifteen goals in the process. The stand-out of this bunch was a stunning 4-3 win over Hibernian at Easter Road, where the match oscillated like HBOS share prices before a dramatic extra-time winner from Ryan Harding (who once turned out for Caley as a trialist) sealed a famous win. This win, in front of a fervant travelling support, won Morton plaudits in the media and pushed Mixu Paatelinan close to the door at Easter Road.
MORTON v INVERNESS C.T.
Cappielow Park, Greenock
Tueday 23rd September, 7:45pm
PAST MEETINGS
Caley Thistle and Morton have only played each other eight times, all occuring back in our first couple of seasons in the First Division. Of these meetings ICT have won five, Morton two and there has been one draw. No game between the two sides has ever had fewer than two goals, hopefully suggesting that fans tomorrow night will be treated to a decent match. Indeed, several of the matches have been veritable goal fests - our biggest win being a 6-2 in January 2000, Morton bagging a 5-1 win two months earlier. The only Caley Thistle players who will have played against Morton in a competitive match are Barry Wilson and Ross Tokely, with Rosscoe bagging a couple of goals in his turn-outs. Our relatively strong record against the Greenock club is perhaps understandable as during this period Morton were Scottish football's perennial crisis club, suffering years of conflict between the fans and hated ex Chairman Hugh Scott. In a display of Prince Phillip style diplomacy Scott once promised to shut down the club like the town's shipyards. Since 2002 the club have been on a more secure financial footing with current owner, millionaire sweetie rustler Douglas Rae. For several years Rae invested heavilyin the team allowing them to build up a formidable squad who somehow managed to blow promotion from Division Two on several occasions. One memorable slip up occured while we were distracted winning Division One when Morton blew a double figure points lead to actually finish fourth, amid dark rumours of betting scandals which provoked many belly laughs from Renfrewshire rivals St Mirren.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
There are no players remaining at Morton from the previous meetings of the sides, no surprise given the length of time that has elapsed. Aside from Ryan Harding, who turned out for us as a trialist in 2003 before opting to sign for Livingston, there are no ex-Caley Thistle players in the Morton squad. Iain Russell was signed from Brechin, where he won Second Division player of the season in 2006/07, and has already bagged four goals in two games in the CIS cup this season. In Steve Masterton Morton have an accomplished free-kick taker, as Dougie Imrie was reminding readers of various downmarket tabloids of over the weekend. For Caley Thistle, Russell Duncan and David Proctor come back into contention after spells out injured. It's a safe assumption that both will be involved and it will be interesting to see how Proctor will do if given a chance ahead of Tokely at right-back. Another talking point for the travelling support is the striker situation - so far we have played four different combinations of strikers in seven games. We need to get our front line working and fast. Rory McAllister is often given a starting berth in the league cup and if he is finally to silence doubters about his ability, a couple of goals in Greenock would be a great way to do it.
MY PREDICTION
Morton have proved this season that they are capable of beating anyone in the cups - if they can win at Easter Road they can be confident of beating us at Cappielow. However, their poor league form is indicative of a side that can be beaten and they appear defensively weak. If we are going to make any headway in this game it's vital that our strikers put in good showings - so far this season we have lacked reliable goals with only two open play goals from recognised fowards. Garry Wood has shown promise so far but perhaps is more of a targetman and Rory McAllister, usually given a shot in these games, needs to step up and take promising reserve runouts to the next level. Defensively Grant Munro is a steadying influence and perhaps Munro-Duff is a dream partnership at the back. I think that Brewster might opt for this pairing at Cappielow. Overall, we should have enough to win this game, perhaps shading a tight, stuffy affair 2-1.

Hearts 1-0 Inverness CT - Report

Gorgie Loss

Caley Thistle have been showing good form on the road this season, but things came back to earth with a bit of a bump today when we visited Tynecastle to face Hearts.
A defensive lapse was to be our downfall yet again as Ksanavicius left our back four rooted to the spot and sent Mikoliunas through on goal.  Fraser hesitated when coming out and was easily rounded, sending us a goal down after only 8 minutes.
This proved to be the only goal of the match and Inverness faced the long journey home with little to celebrate.

20th September 2008 - 3.00pm Tynecastle Stadium, Edinburgh Hearts FC
1 - Mikoliunas (8)
Team: Kello, Jonsson, Zaliukas , Berra, Wallace, Mikoliunas (77 Palazuelos ), Stewart (86 Mrowiec ), Kingston, Karipidis Ksanavicius (59 Nade ), Mole
Subs - MacDonald, Thomson, Rapnik, Glen

Team: Fraser, Tokely , McGuire, Munro, Hastings, Cowie, Black (74 Wilson ), McBain (81 Vigurs ), Imrie,
Rooney (63 Wood ), Barrowman
Subs - Esson, Djebi-Zadi, McAllister, Duff
Referee W Collum Attendance 12890 Man of the Match   Given the Gretna-style collapse of the financial markets this week it was fitting that the build up to the match was dominated, at least from a Jambo perspective, by the failure of the Hearts players to be paid this month. The question of whether or not Ukio Bankas and Hearts are going the way of Lehman Brothers was an unwelcome distraction for the home side, who have enjoyed a relatively good start to the season. The only other pre-match activity of note was the steady stream of Caley fans to the Hearts reception buying tickets, which no doubt prevented the mass crowd trouble we see at every SPL ground with a cash gate.
I will however say that Blackie was, once again, outstanding. - Naelifts
Craig Brewster made three changes to the side from last weekends home defeat to St Mirren with skipper Grant Munro coming back in for youngster Jamie Duff, Dougie Imrie being re-introduced ahead of Iain Vigurs and summer signing Andy Barrowman replacing Garry Wood up front. Wood, Vigurs and Duff were joined on the bench by Rory McAllister, Barry Wilson, Ryan Esson and Lionel Dejbi-Zadi. Hearts brought in Andrei Ksanavicius for Adrian Mrowiec. Caley Thistle lined up as expected, with Cowie and Imrie playing on their stronger sides rather than the often used 'switch' tactic. Hearts used their Greek captain Christos Karipidis in a defensive midfield role, a change from last season when he was at centre-half.
Karipidis had the games first chance when he looped a hopeful overhead kick over the bar following a corner from Layrea Kingston in the seventh minute. This was after the game started brightly for Caley with some decent possession and several forays into the opposition box. However, the deadlock was broken by Hearts in the eighth minute. Seemingly out of nothing the defence was caught high up the park and Mikoliunas broke clear onto a Ksanavicius through ball and finished well after Mikey Fraser rushed out of his goal to try and make up the space. It was a poor goal to lose and was to ensure that there would be no clean sheet for the Jags again this season.
The fact that we don't have a single experienced forward player at the club is now begining to tell. - Kingsmills
Hearts were pressuring all over the park and looked the more likely team to score. Michael Stewart came closest to scoring when he ran from deep onto a Mikoliunas ball and forced Fraser into a fine save. Lareya Kingston caused problems as well with some runs at our defence - Dougie Imrie looked ill when forced to confront the Ghanian international. Ross Tokely was booked on the half hour for a clumsy challenge on Mikoliunas, his tackling proving as accurate as his distribution had been up to that point. As the half went on Caley slowly worked their way back into the match. Don Cowie cut in from the right and sent a shot across goal but Ross Tokely's shot was off target. Towards the end of the half the game moved more into Hearts territory, with Imrie seeing a chance in the penalty area but being unable to get it from under his feet and a corner leading to a goalmouth scramble.
Half Time 1-0
The second half started without changes to either side. Soon after the restart Dougie Imrie headed a Black crossfield ball inside for Adam Rooney to shoot but the Irishman's shot was blocked. Ian Black was probably the star man for the Jags this afternoon with excellent passing throughout the game. The best chance of the half fell to Roy McBain who snuck in behind the Hearts back-line but his shot was well saved by Kello. Just after this the first substitution of the game was made with Adam Rooney being withdrawn in favour of Garry Wood. Rooney had a reasonably lively game with Barrowman perhaps looking a more likely candidate for replacement. Wood was booked almost straight away for a foul on the Hearts goalkeeper.
If the removal of Rooney seemed to create controversy, the substitution in the 74th minute of Ian Black in favour of Barry Wilson saw bewilderment amongst some in the away support. Black had an excellent game, easily the most effective performer in midfield for Caley both in terms of work-rate and picking passes. However, with the game slipping away from his side it seemed that Brewster preferred to keep more obvious goal threats Cowie and Imrie in the midfield with Barry Wilson giving Caley extra width in the final section of the match. Certainly the bizarre chants of 'Brewster Out' from a minority were out of proportion and uncalled for.
We didn't actually play that bad, but lacked any cutting edge whatsoever. - davieB
Hearts looked relatively comfortable heading into the second half with replacement Christian Nade making a strong break onto a through ball but he couldn't feed his teammates. As the match wound down Hearts were content to steadily hold out for the win and we found ourselves unable to make any further headway.
Full Time 1-0
The defeat saw Caley Jags lose for the first time on the road this season and also saw the sixth game in a row without a clean sheet. There were positives in the performance - Ian Black was superb in the middle of the park and Grant Munro was a steadying influence on his return to the first team after injury. However, despite having a great deal of pressure during the match it will disappoint the fans, players and management team that no breakthrough was made. Since Andy Barrowman scored in the first game of the season none of the recognised strikers in the squad have scored from open play. Adam Rooney and Garry Wood have both shown promise in the past few outings but Caley need to turn pressure and promise into goals. Grant Munro showed a sure touch at the back and many will look forward to seeing him paired up with Jamie Duff at some point this season.

Inverness CT 1-2 St Mirren - Report

Saints and Sinners

Caley Thistle welcomed St Mirren to the Caledonian Stadium today but it was the Buddies who felt more at home.
A 43rd minute penalty from Adam Rooney, his first for the club and the 6000th SPL goal saw ICT lead 1-0 at half-time.
In the second half, St Mirren scored through Billy Mehmet and Garry Brady and that meant all three points headed down the A9 to Paisley. A full match report will appear here sometime after the match on Saturday.

Referee Iain Brines Attendance 3501 Man of the Match
It would seem that this season is going to be a rather exasperating one for ICT fans who were left to endure another frustrating home performance as the team crashed to a 2 – 1 defeat to St. Mirren. Only a few weeks ago Hibs had found themselves on the back foot in Inverness but took the game to the Caley Jags in the 2nd half and were perhaps unlucky to only come away with 1 point. Here Saint Mirren, who were somewhat blunt in attack during the first 45, upped their game significantly in the second half to claim victory as ICT toiled after the break once more. What was even more vexing was that the loss came against a team who had last season scored an astonishing 9 goals away from Love St. and had found the net just once this season. Yet ICT found themselves hanging on for large periods of the 2nd half as they fell away badly.
What causes Inverness to fade so severely in the 2nd half of home games is a mystery particularly given their excellent performances on the road so far this season which included an opening day win at Pittodrie. In spite of that Inverness continue to struggle at home seemingly unable to kill games off when they are on top and allow teams back into it. Adam Rooney scored the 6,000th SPL goal but Billy Mehmets strike brought the teams back on level terms and the hard working Garry Brady nipped in at the back post to slot the winner to send the 200 travelling fans into delirium.
It had all started so well for Inverness as Don Cowie, yet to recreate last seasons stunning form, sent in a dangerous ball which found youngster Garry Wood in the box but he was unable to control the ball and the chance was lost. Wood was one of three youngsters retained in the starting line up from the previous win at Falkirk with Ian Vigurs and Jamie Duff also featuring, the latter keeping club captain on the bench despite returning from injury. Ian Black was next to test Howard in the Saints goal. Seizing upon the ball in midfield he drove towards goal and lashed a shot wide of Howard’s left hand post. Ross Tokely, who had to endure only half hearted jeers from the away support, whipped in a good ball for the flame haired Rooney to attack but he was only able to direct his effort right at Howard who held the ball comfortably.
Saints first effort came when Inverness failed to properly clear a corner and midfielder Brady latched onto the loose ball at the edge of the box but his effort was tame and squirmed wide but it was a reminder to ICT that they still had to keep things tight at the back. The Buddies were to threaten again when Gary Mason found himself in space but he dwelled on the ball too long and lost possession. However it ended up at the feet of Andy Dorman who fired an effort towards Fraser in the home goals but never trouble the Inverness keeper. Ross Tokely seemed to be letting the jeers get to him as his play had been slack in the game so far and this was nearly to prove costly when a sluggish clearance fell to Hamilton who quickly sent a shot goal wards but with Fraser out of position the ball fortunately flew wide.
There was to be a moment of controversy as Saint Mirren appealed for a penalty when Ian Black and Gary Mason tussled in the box as they chased a through ball. Referee Ian Brines waved away the Saint Mirren protests much to the relief of the ICT fans. Inverness got back on top when a neat pass from Vigurs found the hard working Rooney in space but his goal bound shot was charged down by the lunging Potter for a corner kick. Youngster Vigurs was gradually becoming more involved in the Inverness attacks and from a neat turn he nearly put ICT one up but he pulled his shot wide of goal.
Just before halftime ICT got the breakthrough they needed when Franco Miranda needlessly upended Wood in the box resulting in a penalty to Inverness which Rooney scored to give him his first goal since signing from Stoke City. A second goal nearly came less than a minute later when Cowie and Black worked a neat one – two from a corner which allowed Cowie to thunder in a shot that was right down the throat of Howard.
Into the second half and ICT were first to threaten as Rooney crashed a shot against the bar with Howard scrambling. At the other end Hamilton nearly restored parity when his attempt also hit the woodwork and then Wood, attempting to cash in on a woeful clearance from Howard, nearly got the important 2nd but his effort was blocked by Howard who redeemed himself to his team mates by making the save.
These two missed early chances were to haunt ICT as St. Mirren drew level. A long kick downfield from Howard caused confusion in the Inverness defence and Billy Mehmet took full advantage as he squeezed between defence and keeper to calmly lift the ball over the onrushing Fraser and into the net. Inverness looked to hit back right away with a Vigurs shot from outside the box sailing over the bar as the home side looked to get ahead once more.
Saint Mirren were now in the ascendancy and began to dominate possession albeit without creating too many clear cut chances. However a great chance fell to Mehmet from a Jack Ross cross but the header flashed wide with Fraser looking on beaten. Richard Hastings ventured forward and his cross landed at the feet of Rooney who tried to make room for a shot but it was blocked. The rebound fell kindly for Wood who saw his effort head for goal only to be hooked away by the legs of Howard who had already gone down for the previous Rooney effort.
In response to the negative swing of the game Brewster took off Vigurs and on come Dougie Imrie fresh from scoring the winner against Falkirk. A free kick from Cowie found Black peeling away at the back post and he was able to hook the ball back across goal which appeared to clip the bar on its way across but no one was able to follow up to our advantage. Shortly after Barry Wilson and Andy Barrowman replaced Roy McBain and Adam Rooney but it was Saint Mirren who found the crucial second goal. Substitute Stephen McGinn raced past a static Tokely on the St. Mirren left and sent in a wonderful ball right across goal which eluded everyone bar Brady who strode onto the lose ball and sidefoot it into the net to secure the points for the Paisley side.
Clearly frustrated at having been beaten so easily, Tokely took his frustrations out on Saint Mirren by scything down one of their players on the touchline next to the dug out which resulted in a yellow card capping a miserable afternoon for the defender. After this ICT upped their game significantly as they looked for an equaliser but the closest they came was an Imrie cross which had Howard flapping.
A chorus of boos greeted the final whistle, blown as Wood had a chance to shoot, but it was too late. After such an impressive result against Falkirk previously it was disappointing to see such a poor second half performance from the team and only when we were losing was some urgency injected into the ICT game. Brewster will need to identify what the problem is as what the home fans saw yesterday were all too familiar to the game against Hibs only a few weeks ago. The only difference on Saturday was that where Hibs couldn’t capitalise on the slackness shown by the home side, Saint Mirren punished ICT for their lethargic display.

Inverness CT v St Mirren Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Caley Thistle welcome St Mirren to the Caledonian Stadium on Saturday in our first SPL fixture in two weeks following the international break. The Buddies come into the match on the back of a poor start to their campaign, losing three of their first four games only scoring a single goal in the process. Having drawn the short straw of a trip to Celtic Park on the opening day of the season Saints eventually succumbed to an extremely dubious Barry Robson penalty despite having matched Celtic in most areas. This incident was the catalyst for the main early season talking point - dodgy referees. St Mirren boss Gus McPherson was reported to have accused whistler Eddie Smith of 'winking' at him during the match and the fact that Smith travelled with the Celtic squad on a European trip after a previous howler against the Paisley side was also dragged up. Subsequent screenings showed that the penalty was indeed a mistake from Smith, who failed to overturn his red card for Buddie captain Will Haining.
After such a controversial start, St Mirren followed up with a nondescript goalless draw at home to Kilmarnock and a loss at Tynecastle that saw them reduced to ten men within the first half hour. Last time out they outplayed Aberdeen for much of their clash at Love Street but lost due to a Dons breakaway that took full advantage of several defensive blunders. In a happier night for the North Bank St Mirren went through to the last 16 of the League cup with a 7-0 thrashing of Dumbarton, featuring a hat-trick for former Dunfermline striker Billy Mehmet.
St Mirren are entering their third season in the SPL and have proved a solid addition to the top Scottish league. They were involved in a tough fight against relegation with Dunfermline in 2006/07 during which they had to rally late in the season to save their skins. Like all of the lower half SPL clubs they spent last season relaxing as the Gretna farce played out well below them. In preperation for this season they signed players from fellow bottom six sides Falkirk (Jack Ross) and us (Dennis Wyness) as well as bringing in Tom Brighton (ex of Clyde and Millwall) and Scott Cuthburt (on loan from Celtic). This supplemented a strike-force including Jim Hamilton (a famous benficiary of the Ross County Pension Scheme) and Craig Dargo, who took a contract with St Mirren over an extended deal at the Caledonian Stadium.
INVERNESS CT v ST. MIRREN
Tulloch Caledonian Stadium
Saturday 13th September, 3pm
PAST MEETINGS
Caley Thistle and St Mirren have played each other 28 times, with 15 wins for Caley thistle, eight draws and five St Mirren wins. We went unbeaten in these games from 2001 until 2006, including a glorious spell which featured eight straight wins for Caley Thistle, 28 goals for and two Buddies managers sacked (Tom Hendrie and John Coughlin). John Robertson's opening salvo as Caley Thistle boss also came with a 4-1 win at Love Street in December 2003. Since the resumption of Paisley-Inverness hostilities in the SPL this has been a much more closely contested fixture with three wins for us, two for St Mirren and three draws. No meeting between ourselves and St Mirren in the SPL has been won by more than a single goal. It was also a dispiriting defeat at Love Street that lead Charlie Christie to throw in the towel as our manager. From a Caley Thistle perspective, the most memorable game between the two clubs is probably a 4-0 win in August 2002 which saw Tom Hendrie binned as manager, despite him offering the classic argument that his team 'deserved to draw the second half'. St Mirren fans will look back fondly on winning the first game of their SPL return 2-1 at our place on the 29th of July 2006.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Dennis Wyness, Craig Dargo and Billy Mehmet. Many ICT fans were outraged when club all-time leading goalscorer Wyness had a contract offer withdrawn towards the end of last season and he ended up signing a PCA with St Mirren. There he hooked up with another ex-Caley player Craig Dargo, who turned down a contract offer with us to link up with former Kilmarnock colleague Gus McPherson. Despite having been a leading SPL goalscorer in both his seasons for ICT Dargo has struggled at Love Street, first from injuries then with loss of form. As things stand Dargo has only managed a solitary league goal at his new club and that came against Gretna last season. Wyness has been used mainly as a sub so far this season but given his status at ICT it will be an interesting and strange experience to see him line up against us. It's a safe assumption that Wyness will receive a better reception than Dargo from our fans considering the Ronaldo-lite circus that ran back when Dargo left. Interestingly, despite Dargo having better SPL pedigree the main striker and goal threat for St Mirren over the past few seasons has been the much-maligned Billy Mehmet. Mehmet is often a figure of fun among opposition fans for his awkward appearance but he has developed into a canny target man and managed eight goals last season and four so far this term, including his sides only SPL goal. Mehmet will offer a challenge to Jamie Duff and Phil McGuire in the air and his link up play is underrated. From a Caley Thistle perspective our games against St Mirren are given an extra edge by one player - Ross Tokely. For those not versed in the history of the Saints fans vendetta, back in 1999 we lined up for our first league game against St Mirren. We lost 3-2 at Love Street to an SPL bound Saints team but the match is now only remembered for Rosscoe's first half red card for a late tackle on St Mirren left-back Chris Kerr. Kerr's knee was seriously damaged and he was out for over a year. He came back and played for St Mirren in the SPL before being released a few years later not having regained the form which saw him touted for moves to England and international honours. St Mirren fans recollections of the incident tend to portray Rosscoe as cynically and deliberately ending Kerr's career due to a seam of malevolent evil mined into his soul: Ross is about as popular with St Mirren fans as Barack Obama is with the Aryan Brotherhood. We can expect a barrage of abuse from Buddies in the away end, doubtlessly including tiresome chants regarding the tabloid make believe that Ross has been subject to. It will be interesting to see how he responds, especially after a commanding performance against Falkirk last week.
MY REALISTIC PREDICTION
This season we seem to have put together two fantastic away showings and two pretty poor run-outs at home. After the superb opening day effort against Aberdeen we tried to replicate the cautious 4-5-1 style against Hamilton but were caught out by a defensive slip and couldn't claw our way back into the game. The performance against Falkirk was much more encouraging - an attacking starting XI and inspired attacking substitutions won us the match. If we stick with the same line-up and approach the game in the same invigorated manner that we showed at Westfield we have a great chance of bagging our first home win of the season. Adam Rooney arrived with a lot of expectations from our fans and he was a handful against Falkirk, setting up Imrie's late winner with a battling header. One thing that will have disappointed him is that he missed a couple of clear chances. I can see the manager using this to motivate Rooney to go out and show what he can do in this match. Prediction: 2-0 win for Caley Thistle with Rooney and Cowie scoring.

August Player Of The Month

Teaser Paragraph:
Ian Black takes the early lead in the 2008/09 Player of the Year and his consistency during the month of August also has him as the first Player of the Month for the Season.
Duff has been hot on his heels all month though and it could have gone either way going in to the Falkirk match, however despite Duff coming top on the voting for the game it wasn't quiet enough to steal it from under Blackie's nose.  Still, quite an achievement for one of the younger lads to be pegging along so close to the top, especially when you keep in mind that Ian Black has had one game more in the month in which to acquire points!!!
So the slate is wiped clean and we get ready to kick things of in September with the next match being at home to St Mirren on 13th September.

Voting is open for 7 days from the final whistle of any game. This allows website users to vote for the players they think were the top 3 performers in that match. The top player is awarded 5 'match points', the 2nd gets 3 'match points' and the third gets 1 'match point'. When the voting is closed, we tally up both the quantity of votes (regardless of whether they are 5, 3 , or 1 point votes) and also the number of points awarded.
The quantity of votes a player receives in any match is counted up and the player with the highest quantity of votes at the end of each month is deemed to be the CaleyThistleOnline Player of the Month. This allows consistent performers who may get loads of 1 or 3 point votes but not too many 5 pointers to be in with a shout at being Player of the Month.
Player of the Year Points are calculated by counting up the number of points awarded to the player for each match by website users. We add up all the points for each player for each match and when they are all counted, the top 3 players in each match (highest match point totals) are awarded 5, 3, or 1 player of the year points respectively. Player of the year points are counted up over the season and the player with the highest POY points total receives the CaleyThistleOnline Player of The Year trophy at an end of season awards ceremony.
