Our worst ever players in the SPL?

Just noticed Paul McMullan was in Berwick's squad for their game against Celtic - didn't he have a few months on our books when we were promoted in 2004? I can't actually find any record of him having played a single minute for us in a competitive game.

It started me thinking about other "not so good" signings during our SPL years - players who either came with fanfare and never made an impact, or some who just never got a chance.

Ones that sprang to mind:

Zibi Malkowski

Richie Byrne

Lionel Djebi-Zadi

Thierry Gathuessi

Tom Parratt

Steven Watt

Liam Fox

Alan Morgan (maybe I'm a bit harsh there)

Darran Thomson

Bajram Fatai

Ben Jackson

Dean McDonald

Gary McSwegan

Bryan Prunty

And perhaps McAllister and Sutherland if we include young players who we had high hopes for but who never reached their potential with us?

Any others spring to mind?

For me, the thought of a veteran McSwegan leading the line for us under 10CC makes me cringe.

Some of course might suggest Niculae - considering he probably caused us more trouble than he was worth.

  • IGNORANT???? how does that become ignorant. if he was such a good player for us he would have been in the team, he would have survived after the injury and would have bounced back. i am not saying h

  • Not just a good goal. He was our Captain and scored our first ever SPL goal. To mention his name in a thread about "worst" players in the SPL is ridiculous, disrespectful and ignorant.

  • Golly, eh no way he saved us at LB in the first.

I believe the reserve league was disbanded. Crazy. Was probably a decision made by the same person that got rid of the trams in Edinburgh.

Here's a few more to throw in, Ally Ridgers. Two spells with ICT, racking up a grand total of zero appearances. Brought back to ICT by CC from Clach to be back-up for Fraser just after Brown left. Apparently was a pretty poor keeper.

Stuart Soane - On the bench a couple of times, has disappeared into the mists of time since.

Ally MacDonald - On the bench a couple of times during season 07/08. Disappeared like Soane since.

Guy Kerr - Played about five minutes against Gretna, at some small club in the SFL now.

And here's maybe a bit of a controversial one, but Richard Hastings went IMO from being a very good left back in season 06/07 to being a fairly poor one from 07/08 onwards. Butcher didn't seem to take to him either.

RIDGERS IS AT Nairn,Soanes at Huntly

I never really thought the likes of Soane, Kerr, Ridgers etc would really ever make it - the young players who I felt were a total let down were Zander Sutherland and Rory McAllister - both were given their chance, neither lived up to expectations, and McAllister in particular got a lot more opportunities than his performances deserved. I quite liked Garry Wood, actually - he put in a shift when he played, which is more than could be said for Barrowman.

That said - I think we have a shortlist of three for the worst ever - Andy Barrowman, Phil McGuire and Darran Thomson?

At least Thomson didn't cost us a huge amount in wages in the way the other two did.
