  1. Was it not more a case of it being an urban myth?
  2. Charles... I was merely expressing my support of IHE's definition of a TRUE Invernessian. Based on wat you sed........if you were born here and away for 2 yrs, but spent the rest of yer formative years in Inverness, then i would afford you the title of Invernessian. As i did say, its not a science!!
  3. Am 36 and my memories of Eastgate are limited. I remeber Boots Corner :021: and the traffic going thro eastgate and inglis street. Hanging about the back of Woolies on a Sat (if Caley were away) was the in thing to do in late 70/early 80s. TORS record shop on raining stairs. About time we had one of the same idea since vinyl is coming back!! Sat shopping was a lottery on high st in them days for near getting hit by cars. Moving further down to Tomnahurich street............best pies I ever had...Munro's the bakers, roughly where bookies is now. And in 80s, Mama Mia's takeaway, which we would frequent on our way home from Baths for a 50p special of the day. Wm Lows (excellent curried pies) next to where primark is now before they moved to the now Tesco Metro. Templetons where poundstrecher is now. Fine fare on Academy street (opposite where traffic comes out of queensgate) and their green sausages! I recall thursdays for the cattle mart at queesgate. I dont really remember anything prior to eastgate Centre opening for that area. Wasnt it smeone from high scool who designed the logo for eastgate thro a competition?
  4. Did the card in spokes thing too Scotty............and...........did ya also have the Palstic Tennents and Skol lager keg tops in yer spokes :021: Was actually passing the pier we used to go and mess about under as kids, and sadly, or probaly a better term would be thankfully, that feat can no longer be acheived as the once concrete slope you had to shimmy along is now either replaced or completely submersed. Ghost hunting expeditions to Tomnahurich in the dark were also a feature of living in dalneigh from time to time. A kind of rights of passage so to speak. Used to mess about in the old distileries from time to time. And, I dunno about you and yer peirs Scotty, but spent a lot of time as kids up in the craig phadraig forest building huts or paying war etc. I often wonder the reaction of someone who hasnt been near telford street for 15 or so years been brought there now. Howdens was basically the last remaining landmark of the area. How its changed!! Remember Frozen Foods, the garage, The laundrete, the distiliries Both sides of telford st. Maybe some pics would be cool if anyone has em
  5. Would just like to also state that over the years, I have spent a lot of time in the company of ethnic people in a social setting, thro choice! Just felt i wanted to add this incase my previous post is on some way mis-interpreted as having racial untertones by some people on here. I have also gone on record among freinds that i rekon the most gorgeous gals (IMO) are from non-white background.
  6. As prob responsible for this topic in another thread...........as have said.............a TRUE Invernessian (im my opinion, as it is by no means a science) is someone born and raised in inverness only. If pushed for a definition (as i was in the other thread) thts the answer ad give. So am wi you IHE. I would be curious to see how many "true Invernessians" live in inverness these days. Also, for the reocrd, I have nothing against incomers.........but some of the ones I have stumbled across (mainly eastern europeans) have been very ignorant individuals and generally not nice ppl! We are force fed this line about intergration and tolerance toward them, but I know am not alone here when I say, there seems to be a reluctance on their part in a high number of cases. This is a personal view based on my own and other pepoples experiences and is no way a decleration of discrimination or prejudice based on race!!
  7. the chain at the wall was at the end of the wall wasnt it Scotty?.....at the right end of the wall as you looked at it? I def have scaled it numerous times regardless. And the ledge bit was just near enuff at the top lock. It had a decent sized ledge there to hide from...........lets say........teachers..... and call em names wen they on the other side of canal :015: And as a matter of intrest, Once saw Derek Dewar (ex caley player) crash his bike, from my hideout, on that dodgy corner wi the wee wall on the way down from kinmylies, as he was going too fast. Then there was catching tiddlers (sticklebacks) on the steps down to canal right beside where the caley inn is now. Fair number of eels there! Used to be the big lock carrying boat parked there. Did the canoe thing too, FREE, as my mam worked there in late 70s early 80s. There was also taking bikes down the rat run that motorbikes used to get up canal between the end of the pitches and the wooden steps at back of St Valery. It took some guts to do.
  8. nice thread. I enjoy hearing the memories. My memories of Dalneigh as a kid include, Mad Eddie the tramp/ wino who lived in a shed along at the canal end of Balnacraig road. There was also maggie bins and her trolley (the female equivalent of Harold Steptoe) Going in the trees at "back roadie" (behind Hawthorn Drive) at bottom of the hill leading to canal, hunting for noodie books. Always prime pickings to be found there. Fishing in the top lock (along wi the rest of the dalneigh population) during summer with half a fly rod (and impaling my finger on the fly). I also went exploring under the wooden peir opposite Scott II boat. There also was a lil hideout adjacent beside the big wall thing, which handily had a tree you could climb down to back roadie, cutting a full minute from yer trip home time from the adventure under the peir. Chasing the footballs for Caledonian Fc at the park during training and being rewarded with half an orange.

The Orange marches pre date rangers fc by some years. They werent devised for the football, but adopted as way of recognition to their beginings. Yes I agree they have no place in football, but i do realise people of this persausions right to "celebrate" the past..... But in the right circumstances. And there is little difference in the sentiment of these Orange songs and Flower of Scotland to me.

I am against everything these marches stand for. To me, its about provocation. In Belfast espesh....they seem hellbent on going thro the others area and to me, thats nothing to do with anything other than getting one over on the other side. The other thing is, as part of being one of the fastest growing cities in western europe, i think things like this and other less desireable things we have been sheltered from up here are going to become commonplace. I for one preffered Inverness as it was 10 yrs ago.

What I mean about Invernessians seeming to be in the minority is this...........In my experience, from most times i go out and about, be it shops, along high street whatever, there seems to be more incomers accents prevalent than a true local. Add to that the thousands of "ecenomic migrants" of all different nationalities (and am gonna bite my tongue here!) that have come to the area in last two or so years (the highest percentage in Scotland).....well, i think you get the pciture.

I dont think everyone will agree on this matter, But am right...according to wikipedia!! :016: Lets agree to disagree on this and get back to the original topic. Hows that for a ground breaking idea?
  14. The way i recieved the news would suggest that CC wasnt happy at the possibility of Shearer arriving. I never at any time suggested it was gospel. On the other hand, it does seem rather a random rumour to start for the **** of it.
  15. JAMES: Getting away with it (Live) cd. thank gawd their back!!

Is this not going off topic and becoming nonsense again? I can see how ppl leave this site if this is how it normally is! This started as a football related thread, and now has turned into dictionary corner thanks to sophia asking for definitions and me stupidly playing her game.

You can call yourself an Invernessian if you want. Its no skin of my nose. But you were not born here, therfore, in my book, your not an invernessian. I was asked to define an Invernessian, so I gave what i understand one to be. To add weight to my point, since your nit picking, check this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Londoner so if it applies to london, it applies to across the board am sure!

I would define an Invernessian as an individual born and raised in the town/city. And no....an "incomer from Aviemore or Alness" could not be classed as an Invernessian, nor would anyone from anywhere else you mention! No more so than if I moved to London. I wouldnt be considered a Londoner. No one here has argued against any person having the freedom to support ICT should they be black, white, Invernessian, Algerian or whatever. So dont start trying to make out they have!

Just read the thread that started all this. The poster (Sophia??) didnt exactly help her cause with her dictorial attitude. No wonder she got under peoples skin! Had I heard the "shout" that offended so many, It wouldnt have bothered me one way or the other! Does that make me racist? And to the person that made the comment about a black man on the streets of Inverness..........get a grip. Invernessians themselves seem to be in the minority these days here!
  20. The pitches at Charleston ARE part of the Highland Soccer Academy and were heavily invested in and upgraded as far as i know. They are by no means poor
  21. Just for the record..........if it is true, al certainly not be happy about his return :020:
  22. I wasnt singling you out at all Scotty...I was just letting it be known that I doubt it was just plucked from thin air!! I have my reasons to beleive this to have some credibility.
  23. Am not saying its true. Am merely sharing what i have been told and ad like to think i know the person well enuff to say that am sure he has more to do than make up pointless pish.
  24. Av heard a rumour this morn that there was a BIG bust up wi Christie and the board last night over the appointment of shearer as a coach. IF true, could it be the end of Charlie at the club?
