    Coco Taxi

    From the album: Cuba

These little things are everywhere ... a sort of hybrid cross between a motorbike and an old fashioned bubble car .... but they do look kinda cute !

Obviously our tip wasnt good enough as we have now been demoted from President to normal congress members. Still, it was pretty awesome to be allowed to sit in what used to be the very seat of government.

The Capitolio was once the seat of the Cuban Congress and here we are sitting at the top table ... As our guide was happy to point out (for a peso or two) ... now you are President

    Capitolio Ceiling

    From the album: Cuba

Habana's most grandiose building, the Capitolio is similar to the US Capitol Building in Washington, DC, but taller and much richer in detail. It was initiated by Cuba's US-backed dictator Gerardo Machado in 1926 and took 5000 workers three years, two months and 20 days to build at a cost of around US$17 million. Once the seat of the Cuban Congress, it now houses the Cuban Academy of Sciences and the National Library of Science & Technology.

    Daiquiris

    From the album: Cuba

When in Havana there are a few "must dos" ... one is to have a Daiquiri in the Floridita bar made famous by Ernest Hemingway. so here we are sipping our drinks in the place !

One of the lavish ceilings in the Museum of the Revolution. The museum is Havana's largest and most definitive museum and is housed in the former Presidential Palace, constructed between 1913 and 1920. It was used by a string of Cuban presidents over the years, culminating in Fulgencio Batista but Castro only used it briefly after the revolution.

  9. The slightly expanded story is that both he and Pele were paraded at the TCS (or CS in those days) and talked of signing or having signed 5 year contracts. As I remember it - and Charles B who was also at that press conference can correct me if I am wrong - Dunc had been working without a contract for some time and Pele -who did most of the talking - looked us all straight in the eye and said they were going nowhere and the contract for Dunc was long overdue. This contract signing was hastily arranged after Pele had turned down the Dundee Utd job that eventually went to Ian McCall and there was rampant speculation at the time that he had been quietly advised to turn it down as "something better" was about to come up. Within a week (or so) Dunc was smugly playing up to the Aberdeen fans in the audience of Tam Cowan's TV show - which was coming from Aberdeen that week - and basically confirmed that he and Pele would be the new management team at Pittodrie. I dont recall if he said anything bad about ICT but it certainly felt like it at the time.

    Cuban Tank

    From the album: Cuba

A tank that supposedly took part in the suppression of the unsuccessful Bay of Pigs invasion in the early 60s. It now takes pride of place outside the Museo de la Revoluci

Old cars abound in Havana. Many were left behind during the revolution as rich Americans fled the country and have been lovingly restored by the resourceful Cubans. One interesting piece of trivia we picked up was that because of the US embargo on Cuba since 1959, replacement parts are almost impossible to source so most of these vehicles have Lada or other eastern block engines under the hood.

    Cohibas

    From the album: Cuba

Cohiba cigars, one of Cuba's most famous exports. A nice cigar here in Cuba might cost as little as 3 or 4 pounds but back in the UK or Canada it would be several times that price. Needless to say, myself and Big Stew did sample a few.

  18. From the album: Cuba

Christe, Big Stew and myself on the rooftop patio of the NH Parque Central hotel in Havana. This hotel was great - right in the centre of old Havana, just a few steps from the Capitolio building and overlooking Havana's Central Park (Parque). We were on the 7th floor, and the rooftop patio, bar and swimming pool was on the 8th so it wasnt far to come for a great view, some fine rum and the odd Cohiba.

  23. off-topic I know but drink in Sweden is a **** of a price ... slightly cheaper in their equivalent of an off-license but 8 or 9 quid a pint in bars !!! Denmark is only slightly better at 6 or 7 quid !
  24. Well, Djebi-Zadi is a **** of a scrabble score :004:
  25. Indeed. and it only took a bit over 5 years from inception to final deployment although to be fair, the ticket office have been using it internally for a couple of years or more. There are many people who work **** hard behind the scenes at ICT and I am in no way casting aspersions about them or their abilities, but it seems that improvements are slow in coming and that the people trying to do something to achieve those improvements are hamstrung at every turn.......
