Inverness CT -V- Aberdeen

Shambolic 45

Unbreached in the last five games, the Inverness defence dished out more presents than Santa Clause at his Eastgate Grotto in a festive handout. Forget your gold, frankincense and myrrh, Inverness CT were handing out gifts hand over fist and the eleven wise men from the East took full advantage.

Inverness were taught a harsh lesson in the first half as Aberdeen tore us apart at every opportunity in a somewhat uncharacteristic opening half where every time the Dons attacked they looked like causing problems.

Two goals from former Inverness winger Barry Robson and one apiece from Peter Pawlett and Niall McGinn saw them apparently coasting into second place in the SPFL. A second half revival saw Billy McKay notch a predatory brace and a superb header from Graeme Shinnie all but snatch Inverness an unlikely point, however the Dons saw out the game courtesy of some well worked time wasting routines and take all three points East.

A chilly winters day saw a crowd of around 4800 assemble to watch this late kick off in John Hughes first home game in charge of the Caley Jags. How he must have wished the half time whistle had sounded half an hour earlier. It was also Scotty's first game this season, all the way from Canada, maybe there's a lesson to be learnt there!

A late change saw Danny Williams start in place of the sprightly Marley Watkins who had suffered a dead leg in training and his pace was badly missed in that first half.

A bright start by the home side gave little indication of what was to come. Richie Foran dived to head a low effort just wide from a Tremarco free kick and Ross grazed the outside of a post after McKay set him up on the edge of the box. The Inverness pressure continued and Langfield did a bit of scrambling back to atone for his own poor clearance, Doran arrowing a thirty yard curling shot on target, but Langfield gathering well.

It all changed just after twenty minutes into the game. A long high ball was missed by the heads of Vernon and Meekings. Unfortunately the ball hit the flailing arm of Josh and no doubt about it, a penalty borne out of nothing really. Barry Robson cracked the ball home, hit hard and low just out of the reach of a diving Brill to his right side.

It got worse ten minutes later when Robson doubled his tally with a header would you believe it. A cross to the far post by Pawlett found Robson sandwiched between Tremarco and Warren, he was off balance and facing the opposite direction, but the ball still found the top corner. Not sure Robson knew much about it, but he enjoyed it anyway.

And it got even worse. Pawlett fed Vernon who in turn picked out Pawlett as he sprinted into the box after a weak Nick Ross challenge on the half way line. Pawlett took it first time and he swept the ball home from twelve yards. Hint of offside by Vernon, but the final execution was clinical.

The home defence was now in tatters, Gary Warren having a nightmare along with the rest of the side and huge gaps were allowing the Dons a safe passage into our penalty box. Niall McGinn took full advantage of more poor marking to run unchallenged for forty-five yards before drilling the ball home from the edge of the box. Lethal from Aberdeen; shambolic from Inverness, many punters tempted to go at half time.

Half Time 0-4

Harsh words must have been spoken at the interval and a quick response was required. It came via Duracell Bunny, Billy McKay. He was prepared to roll up his sleeves and he gave the home side some belief when he latched onto a loose ball at the far post to prod home his first of the night.

Nick Ross spurned a tremendous opportunity after McKay set him up with a header back across the box, but Nick, not noted for his striking ability lashed a volley straight at Langfield who gratefully parried the ball to safety.

McKay would not be denied his second though as he showed tenacity to crash in an angled drive after rounding Langfield. Doran and Ross had combined with Billy who was running himself ragged; great goal, and game on.

Could we do it? Draper headed one off the post and Raven cracked the same post with the rebound. Tremarco's corners were worrying the Dons defence.

Gary Warren got one thing right tonight. He flighted a long ball into the box and Graeme Shinnie met it on the run from fifteen yards to send an unstoppable header into the top corner, Langfield rooted to the spot. Pick that one out. Ya beauty!

Aberdeen meanwhile were reduced to sitting in and hitting on the break and Hayes could have done better with a late strike, but he rolled it gently into Brill's hands.

We almost got the leveller our second half blitz deserved, but a melee in the Dons box from another corner just would not go over the line and Aberdeen survived to take all three points East.

Full Time 3-4

The proverbial game of two halves. Battered in the first, we got off the canvas to narrowly lose on points, had it actually been a boxing match the ref would have called a halt after 45 minutes.

Richie Foran looks as though he has damaged his shoulder and could miss the busy festive programme and David Raven came back into his most productive position at right back just after the break, Shinnie moving flanks, but further ahead of Tremarco after the re-shuffle, which seemed to suit our pursuit of goals in the second half. It was a damaging first half, one of the poorest I have witnessed, but we did show great character to have a go in the second half and but for that it could have been a miserable Xmas for the home fans.

tm4tj MotM:- Has to be Mr perpetual motion, Billy McKay. He ran his little cotton socks off in the second half, where does he get the energy from? Sadly, Gary Warren and Josh Meekings were bossed in that first half by Scott Vernon and that was one of the reasons we were taken apart. But, we can rebuild as we showed in a spirited second half. This result has cost us a place or two in the league, but we still have that game in hand, and after the half time pep talk, all is not lost yet.

Jury is still out on John Hughes and let's not go down the route of knee jerk reactions. He must have said something right at half time.

Inverness CT -V- Aberdeen - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Xmas Brief

I'll be brief here. Forget the Xmas shopping, there's something more important going on this Saturday at tea-time. Fourth take on second at the Park'n'Ride stadium on the outskirts of Inverness, a five-thirty kick off for those in doubt.

The festive frolics begin in earnest this weekend as Inverness look to gain revenge against the team that ended their unbeaten start to the season with a 1-0 win at Pittodrie in August, seven games into the campaign. An excellent Scott Vernon strike separated the sides that day with the Dons always looking the likeliest to end our run, but in truth, there was little between the sides.

Inverness sit three points above Aberdeen and the main reason for that is our miserly defence, the tightest in the SPFL having conceded only eleven times in fifteen games. Brill and Co are on a five game unbreached run, Kilmarnock the last side to score against us on the 2nd November. There's little to choose between the sides in the scoring stakes. Aberdeen have scored one more than us, but they have played a game more as well.

Billy Mckay scored his 14th and 15th goals of the season against Hearts last week but there is more to his game than simply scoring goals. His hold up play for a short guy is simply fantastic, constantly holding off much larger defenders and his ability to link with fellow players a joy to behold. Marley Watkins being the latest talent to provide for Mckay with two assists at Tynecastle, and his pace will be a valuable asset in the heavy schedule to come.

No fresh problems for Inverness with James Vincent the only one missing although reserve player Curtis Allen has left the club after an injury hit time North of the border.

Cammy Smith is hopeful of making the squad for the Dons, but Clark Robertson remains out.

tm4tj prediction:- Tough game to call this one. Aberdeen are on a decent run of form, only three defeats in the last sixteen games. We are on a high as well, three defeats in eighteen games. I expect defences to give little away although the extreme conditions could play a part in deciding this fixture. A draw would not be a disaster and a defeat would not end our season as we still have a game in hand over most teams. Victory would be sweet, but it might be too much to ask for given the magnitude of the task in difficult circumstances. I'll go for a share of the spoils, possibly 0-0.

Hearts -V- Inverness CT - Report

McKay Blows Hearts Away

Billy McKay scored two second half goals at a windswept Tynecastle to secure John Hughes first three points as Inverness manager in his second game in charge. Our fifth clean sheet in a row ensured that Hearts would not take all three points and McKay made sure they took none with two clinical finishes. AJS has this report for us.................
Wild Bill breaks young hearts
We braved the winds and battled the rain...and that was just to get up the stairs but it was all very much worth it as ICT took a much needed 3 points and a 5th straight clean sheet against basement boys Hearts. At times the weather disrupted the play, other times the ref was a tad picky but at other times ICT produced the fluent, flowing attacking football that has been served up over the course of what has been so far a fine season. It was also nice to see John Hughes take to the dugout for the first time yesterday. A great start for him and hopefully the beginning of a prosperous time as ICT manager.
The game itself took a long time to get going. As said high winds and gusting rains played a large part in disrupting anything that both sides offered. Set pieces were overdone as well as passes and touches were a tad heavier on a slippery pitch. With the crowd on their side Hearts probably saw more of the ball in a cagey first half but Gary Locke's youthful eleven were struggling to carve out any real openings and against the run of play ICT carved out the first real opportunity.
Marley Watkins found himself heading towards the box and did well to cut inside Kevin McHattie and tee up Nick Ross whos first touch was unfortunately too heavy and the chance was gone. Watkins was on the ball again and tried to cut inside Danny Wilson, Watkins fell to the floor rather theatrically and referee Brian Colvin judged there to be no foul. Watkins either fell or dived. It was worth noting that he didn't argue.
Billy McKay then missed a good chance to put the away side in the lead. Doran laid the ball back for Carl Tremarco who hit a lovely first time cross into the penalty area. McKay had a free header but struggled to get a good connection and saw his effort go well wide of the mark.
Hearts were playing some neat football but were finding chances hard to come by. Gary Oliver was one who saw plenty of the ball and he was unlucky to see his crisp drive fizz just over the bar. The home side were then awarded a free kick in a dangerous area when Callum Paterson was judged to be fouled by Tremarco. Kevin McHattie stepped up but was wasteful as his drive hit the wall.
With the half drawing to a close ICT were beginning to take more of the ascendancy. Graeme Shinnie was unlucky to see his crisp drive blocked by McGowan. Aaron Doran then tried a speculative effort from around 30 yards, with the ball dipping into the corner Jamie MacDonald was forced to make a fingertip save and from the corner Shinnie came close again with a strike from the edge of the area but it was deflected away and with that the first half drew to a close.
HT  0-0
The 2nd half saw ICT come out with a bit more urgency to their play. Foran and Draper were breaking up anything through the middle while Watkins and Doran were seeing plenty out wide with Tremarco and Shinnie overlapping. Hearts nearly caught Brill by surprise. Callum Tapping found himself at the edge of the area and with the goal in sight but his shot fell way wide of the mark.
Ross Draper was next to have a go at the Hearts goal. Billy McKay's cut back eventually fell to the big man as he was charging towards the box but his effort flew high over the bar. A well worked set piece saw Josh Meekings then come close to his first league goal. Doran hit his corner across the surface, Foran dummied it and Meekings struck a curling effort from the edge of the area, unfortunately it curled wide. Given the sight of goal he had it should probably have been on target.
Jamie Walker was taken off injured and replaced by David Smith. He offered a decent option down the right and his cross was spilled by Dean Brill, hearts were in mouths but fortunately he was quick to salvage it.
Just before the hour mark ICT finally made the breakthrough. Marley Watkins stole the ball from Scott Robinson in midfield and he laid it out to Aaron Doran. Doran did just enough to feed it back to Watkins who laid out wide to McKay. The wee man did brilliantly to cut inside and beat his man before curling an absolute pearler beyond MacDonald and into the bottom corner of the net.
The advantage was almost doubled with an even better shot from Billy. Watkins manged to push to the byline before delivering a wonderful ball into the area. Billy connected with it on the first time volley but he was terribly unlucky to see his effort cannon off the post and out of danger. Nick Ross then teed up the wee man who smacked an effort across goal. It went wide by a fair distance but with the angle being tight it wasnt a bad effort by any means.
Hearts were struggling to make things happen, and with no real Plan B to call upon ICT were beginning to sense another goal was not far off. Marley Watkins was unlucky not to score and for his overall performance he probably deserved one. Doran flighted in a free kick and Watkins managed to stretch a leg to connect with it at the back post. Unfortunately for him it fell just wide of the mark. He was even more unlucky not to be awarded a spot kick after being wrestled to the ground by McHattie.
With the game entering the final stages it was put to bed by another cracking strike from ICT's classy number seven, the finish itself was good but it was a goal built from the back which was even more impressive. Smith's cross was intercepted by Meekings. The ball fell to Draper who fed the ball to Watkins. More and more gaps were opening as Hearts went in search of a way back into the game. Watkins raced into the Hearts half before threading it through to McKay. On his left foot and with a defender closing in the wee man struck it first time. It was a venomous shot from Billy and it crashed past MacDonald and into the rood of the net to send the big travelling support into raptures and help send the 3 points up the A9.
Toby Agdestein and Danny Williams were brought on for Marley Watkins and Aaron Doran in the remaining minutes of the match but with the remaining minutes played out, the referee brought the match to a close.
FT 0-2

To summarize :- First half was a bit of a write off but the second half saw us play more like the side we've been throughout the season. Plenty openings carved out, 2 great goals and 3 valuable points taken back up the road as we go into the festive period. Hearts may be basement boys but there are no easy games in this league and I'm glad we treated Hearts with the respect they deserved and took the 3 points simply by having that cutting edge. Billy's goals were arguably 2 of his best so far. Great skill and composure for both. I think there will be major interest come January but with him being under contract and in the form of his life its vital we hang onto him.
MotM - Watkins and Ross were dangerous every time they were on the ball while Foran and Draper were hard as nails in the midfield but for the sheer class shown in both goals it has to go to Billy McKay.

Teaser Paragraph:
Semi-Final Rehearsal

It's another rehearsal for the league cup semi-final as Inverness travel to the capital to take on struggling Hearts. The Edinburgh club have been nothing short of whipping boys recently with Celtic putting seven past the young Jambos and Dundee United adding four last weekend.

I doubt for a minute that Inverness will find the task quite as easy, but the confidence must be sapping from the young side, asked to take the strain in the SPFL, starting fifteen points adrift after administration woes put the future of the club at risk. To add more misery to the capital side, Ryan Stevenson has been ruled out for up to six weeks with a hamstring tear.

John Hughes first game in charge ended in a tough no scoring draw at Paisley, Dean Brill ensuring the new gaffer took at least one point back up the A9 with a string of fine saves. That's four clean sheets in a row for the man keeping Ryan Esson on the bench.

While Inverness were at Paisley, Hearts succumbed to a rampant Arab side who are gathering a bit of momentum with a series of high scoring results. However, Hearts did compound the critics with a 3-1 win at Pittodrie a month ago, only their third win of the season and their second over Aberdeen.

But that's enough from me, AJS has this preview for you before the trip to Tynecastle....................

Dugout Debut

Inverness travel down to the nations capital to pay basement boys Hearts a visit, with John Hughes taking to the dugout for the first time as our new boss. Yogi watched his side play out a tentative 0-0 draw in Paisley from the stands and will have had another week to tweak things to his way of liking, without "changing things too much".

Hearts will be looking to add some much needed points and goals to their stats as they face the worrying prospect of hitting the festive period still stuck on minus points. December has been a wretched month for the Jam Tarts having haemorrhaged 11 goals in just 2 games as well as going into the upcoming fixture missing several key players, including Ryan Stevenson and Jason Holt who have been influential players for Gary Locke's youthful side. ICT go into the game with a near fully fit squad, James Vincent remaining the only absentee as he recovers from long term injury, but he is on the recovery trail and has been given the go-ahead to up his training..

Between the sides this season Inverness were the victors when Hearts travelled north at the beginning of the campaign, with Billy McKay netting a well taken first half double. He was denied a hat trick when his penalty was well saved by Jamie MacDonald. Meetings at Tynecastle last season dished up much entertainment, 9 goals served up and also ICT taking good results in both encounters. The first was an early meeting in the season with Hearts racing into a 2-0 lead and ICT also losing Richie Foran to a red card before half time, but our new look side bravely battled back. Andy Shinnie netted a spot kick to reduce the deficit and with time almost up a lovely exchange of play between Billy McKay and Graeme Shinnie saw the latter cut the ball back to a fresh faced, delirious youngster in Conor Pepper who clipped the ball high into the net to send the fans behind the goal into raptures and the players into delight as they had rescued what seemed an impossible result.

The cup semi final against the Jam Tarts was heartbreaking, we will just leave it at that. But it sent us out on a revenge mission later the same month and we went to Tynecastle and took 3 points home. Gary Warren of all people netted a double with a couple of bullet headers, either side of Billy McKay scoring a goal. Webster and Holt were on the score sheet for Hearts but it wasn't enough and it was a hard fought and well taken result. Emphasising the grit and hard working nature of our side.

Its the kind of grit and work ethic that will be needed at Tynecastle. Hearts may have a youthful side but they have shown despite recent results that they have grit themselves and during what is a real struggle for the club they are doing their best to dig themselves out of a real hole with next to no resources. Despite the lack of players on paper I'm sure Gary Locke will have them well fired up and its important we don't take it lightly. As for ourselves John Hughes has stated he won't tinker too much and hopefully he will stick to that. Our results in the last month have been terrific and I'm hoping that with him in the dugout on Saturday the players it will give the players an extra boost to go out and give their all and hopefully come away with a top result and performance.

Tynecastle itself is a thoroughly enjoyable venue. One of my favourite grounds to visit.  Good view, good fans and overall a great day out. Hoping to see a good support there tomorrow and for the 3 points to be heading back up the A9.

AJS's prediction - Hoping our defence will stay solid and come away with a clean sheet. While up top we show the class we have shown throughout the campaign - I'm going for a 2-0 win.

Into October and it was Gary Warren who was the standout in votes cast, beating out Josh Meekings to the monthly award, but Meekings got more POY points.

St Mirren -V- Inverness CT - Report

STALEMATE AT PAISLEY FOR YOGI AND HIS NEW CHARGES

Inverness took a point in a determined battle with St Mirren. Had it not been for three or four remarkable saves from Dean Brill it could have been a different story but he single handedly kept the Buddies out, especially in the first half. We perked up a bit in the second half but neither side really got to grips with the inclement weather and defences were generally on top. Immortal Howden Ender has theis report from Paisley.........
Mr. Hughes may have appreciated his Fort George experience earlier in the week as the weather conditions in Paisley must have been just as bad if not worse. The wind appeared to change direction intermittently throughout the game. Unfortunately I don't think that we can use the weather as the only reason that this game turned in to a rather dour, unattractive and scrappy affair. We had two "form" teams battling it out against each other and they simply cancelled each other out. It also has to be said that Saint Mirren also came across as a much improved outfit and they could have pinched it if they had taken their opportunities in a first half that they dominated. Otherwise the other reasons for the stalemate were Dean Brill, two teams who were mainly ineffective in the last third, were terrible at delivering that final telling cross or pass and became trapped in a game mainly played between the two 18 yard lines.
Much of the pre match talk was about the appointment of Yogi and the potential effect on the team. Interesting to see that Yogi stated that he had felt "trepidation and anxiety" prior to the match but his observed "togetherness" factor shone brightly through the dark Paisley skies. Undoubtedly a game that had to be got rid off and a point in the end was gratefully accepted if not fully deserved.
The day started in the Canal Bar at Paisley and the initiation to Juanjo Away of wee Angus Riach. He appeared to thoroughly enjoy the initiation ceremony of being cuddled and carried by IHE and King Beastie - but then again, who wouldn't. Then it was off to the palatial Alamo Bar and the only surprising negative of the day - not only were the pies warm but they were also grease free and did not allow for torrents of fat to spill on to the chin. The standards in that establishment have gone down.
So off to the game and a healthy away support, vociferous throughout as ever, attempting to turn out some new Yogi ditties. Yogi as he had warned remained in the Main Stand and allowed Shearer and Kellacher to take the lead. You have to take your hats off to the Saintee in the main Stand with the blue training top who stood up and waved back every time that "Yogi, Yogi, give us a wave" emanated from the away support.
The first half went on for ever as Saint Mirren took an early control. In previous weeks the clean sheets were as much accountable to the defensive unit but this was clearly down to the goalkeeping finesse of Dean Brill. He mad four fine stops in the first half, three being in the excellent category - two from Thompson, the second tipped on to the bar - and a free kick by Newton. Would need to see the incident again but Josh Meekings for a lunge just on half time but Mr. Murray kept his cards in his pocket but Josh should have been closer to a red card. That was a poor display overall from both the referee and his assistants and they awarded some bizarre, incorrect decisions either way. We never really got going and our final ball was simply atrocious. It was indeed a relief that we went in level and goalless.
Half Time 0-0
The second half was more enjoyable as we began to contest more but frankly it looked like a potential stalemate from a long time before the final whistle. Again the final balls were poor and chances were lean. We hit the post with 20 minutes left from what looked like a combination of headers from Marley and McKay. The game then petered out although most of the game was at our end in the last ten minutes, highlighted only by a Saintee penalty claim which was laughable.
Full Time 0-0
And Yogi came on to the pitch and offered the faithful a "thank you" wave. There were positives and negatives to be gleamed but four clean sheets in a row is not to be sneezed at and extends our unbeaten run and second spot in the SPL. I would give the Man of the Match award to Dean Brill although Richie Foran put in as good a performance as he has ever done. Warren was my third pick and Marley is getting better and better every game. I am not really sure whether to applaud or admonish Gary about his professional courtesy in not getting Thompson booked if not dismissed. Gary had earlier been carded for a nothing "duel" with Thompson. Although it was not a red card it was at least a feckin yellow. Josh was steady if not overly involved. Draper appeared to struggle at times and Doran had one of his "off days". I still am not sure as to what Nicky Ross's role is and the forever in motion McKay simply lacked support or provision. Not utilising a substitution was also frustrating.

Still a point away when not playing at your best must be a bonus. Must have given Yogi a few thoughts and will be interesting to see if there are any changes at Tynecastle. To assist Mr. Hughes in his decision making may I suggest that he initially has to make a very difficult decision about the left back position. Graeme Shinnie is not a right back. He may well be solid and reliable in that position but he is considerably more effective on his left foot. Tremarco has not put a foot wrong but he is not in the Shinnie class. To me the decision is to who plays right back - Tremarco or Raven. Then there is wee Billy, Nicky Ross and Aaron Doran. I have a hunch that Mr. Hughes would favour a 4-4-2 and a target man up front. Toby is the only one who hits the target man role but I am not sure whether he is up to it. Foran to me is the answer with Ross and Draper in central midfield.

St Mirren -V- Inverness CT - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
That was the week that was

Yes, it's been some week. Power cuts, flooding, snow, freezing conditions, no trains boats or planes, the great leader Nelson Mandela passing on and Yogi arrives in Inverness in time for the Arctic weather.

Now for something completely different, weather permitting. Back to earning our crust this weekend with a difficult away trip to Paisley to face a resurgent St Mirren, only one defeat in their last eight games.

It's a tough opener for new gaffer John Hughes. However, this weekend will see Duncan Shearer have more say on the team selection as Hughes begins the process of getting his erse onto the managers chair and familiarising himself with his new surroundings. He may even sit back and take stock of his new charges as they go about their business, maybe getting a better view of the bigger picture from the stand before he begins his tenure in earnest.

The opening game of the season saw Inverness ease past St Mirren by 3-0. The Buddies poor start to the season continued for the next two months, with only two wins in a dozen games and going out of the League Cup to Queen of the South. They went undefeated in November, winning two and drawing two, one of which was a 2-2 away draw against the same Queens that knocked them out of the League Cup, but excellent wins at Partick and at home to Ross County have steadied the ship and Danny Lennon's side have now climbed to eighth in the table.

Inverness have reacted well to the loss of Butcher to Hibernian and the Shearer-Kellacher combination has seen three clean sheets and three wins in a row. We are in fact, on a five game winning streak, the sweetest of those being a 2-0 victory at Easter Road as Butcher hob-nobbed with the Hibs directors. Eat that Terry! This run has steadied our boat as well after consecutive defeats to St Johnstone and Partick Thistle and we are now back in second place on our own with a game in hand over the teams below us. That game is the Ross County away fixture that ran out of light, something more common these days, ahem.
