It's Yogi

Teaser Paragraph:
It's Yogi.

Let's hope Inverness have not made a Boo Boo as they have announced that John 'Yogi' Hughes will take over the reins at Inverness after the departure of Terry Butcher.

Paul Hartley seemed to be the fans preferred choice going by polls and topics on the CTO forums, but Yogi has emerged as the winner, nearly three weeks after Butcher saw greener grass at Easter Road. It looks as though Yogi will have a job on his hands to convince a lot of the Inverness fans that he was the best option, many yet to be convinced that the board have got it right this time. Mind you, when Butcher arrived, we went through a similar phase but that seemed to pan out OK before he was taken from our grasp.

Plenty fans taking umbrage at the appointment claiming John Hughes has not achieved anything as a manager. Let's take a closer look at his stats and see if we can help you make your own mind up.

Yogi began his senior playing career at Berwick Rangers, where he scored 14 goals in 41 appearances as a striker. He moved to Falkirk via Swansea and Alloa (loan), and he played the majority of his games at Brockville, 134 in total. In season 1995/96 he joined Celtic before going to Hibernian for four seasons. In 2000 Hughes went West to Ayr United before returning to Falkirk as Player/coach.

His managerial credits started at Brockville where he accompanied Owen Coyle in the hot seat. When Coyle left for Tannadice, Hughes was in sole charge, leading Falkirk to promotion into the SPL in 2005. Hughes kept Falkirk in the top flight for the next four years and they made a Scottish Cup Final appearance in 2009. He had been so successful, Hibernian stole him in 2009; sounds familiar. A fourth place finish and a Europa League place followed for Hibs in his opening season, but fans are fickle things, especially at Easter Road and, Butcher beware, the old mutual consent was dished out as Yogi departed the following season. Livingston were added to his CV in 2012, and in the time it takes to have a bairn, he was off to Hartlepool for the 2012/13 season. Hartlepool were in big trouble by the time Hughes arrived, 20 games without a win, and despite winning a manager of the month award, and an upturn in results (27.5%), he was sacked on 9th May 2013 as Hartlepool were relegated to Football League Two.

Many will remember Yogi for something a bit more adventurous though. During a TV interview with  Maurice Johnstone, Big Yogi ran behind Mo, starkers with the camera's rolling...........

Well, Hughes is inheriting a team riding high in the SPFL and to be honest, the only way is down from here. The fans will need to give Hughes some time to stamp his own authority on Inverness Caledonian Thistle. It's some task considering where we are just now, but better to be there than struggling to avoid relegation with a new manager.

Hughes has been here before of course, as a manager getting pelters from the home fans, but if memory serves me right, he gave as good as he got.

If our board are prepared to gamble on Hughes being the next manager, then we should all get behind that decision and give him the respect that he deserves. He will live or die by the sword, and as this is a results based business, I'm sure he knows that well and will do his utmost to continue our rise to the top.

Inverness CT 4-0 Morton - Sc Cup - Report

The Darkness Cometh North Once Again

Inverness surged past a luckless Morton eventually, but it took a power failure, two penalties and three second half goals to ensure their safe passage into the fifth round draw. Nick Ross scored the opener from the spot, on the stroke of half-time, comfortably stroking home the penalty. A terminally looking power cut darkened the skies around the stadium but over half an hour late, the second half kicked off and Inverness were lurking with more intent around the visitors box. A brace from McKay and another penalty at the death, this time from Doran, saw Inverness progress and Morton go back to Greenock in search of a new manager and looking to stave off the threat of relegation. Good luck to them with that.
A minutes silence was impeccably observed in memory of those who lost their life in the tragic helicopter accident in Glasgow less than 17 hours earlier.
It was a blustery day in the Highlands and the chill wind would get even colder as the day went on. A decent away support greeted the Ton onto the pitch at the start and their danger would come from the vertically challenged but still sprightly legs of Nacho Novo and former Inverness man Dougie Imrie. Inverness started with Liam Polworth replacing the suspended Richie Foran and Raven on the bench once more. Nick Ross had his teeth sorted and he took his place in the starting eleven.
AJS will have a full match report after he gets over his latest gig.............................
ICT booked their place in the draw for the 5th round for what was ultimately a comfortable victory of Championship prop up boys Morton. For the 2nd time this season we had the bizarre experience of watching two teams without managers in the dugout. All being well ICT's managerial search should draw to a close by the end of next week while Morton's search is just beginning following the dismissal of Allan Moore in the week building up to their trip North. It left Duncan Shearer in charge for another week, assisted by Scott Kellacher, while Moore's assistant, former Leeds and Bradford midfielder David Hopkin took caretaker charge of the visitors. Amongst Morton's team was former ICT player Dougie Imrie and former Rangers star Nacho Novo. Both of whom would have brought some vital experience to Morton's starting X1.
A Highland winter is never a pleasant experience, particularly at TCS but nothing better than a win to warm you up. It took a long time for ICT to find any rhythm in the game though, lots of misplaced passes and mistimed runs. Morton were doing their bit to close any attacks out and hit ICT on the break. The first real chance of note fell to our man in form Billy McKay. Some neat play between Ross and Doran exchanged play before Doran played a neat through ball to McKay. The angle was tight and was on his weaker left side, with those against him he was unlucky to see his shot go wide.
Morton keeper Nicolas Caraux was probably the away sides stand out player and with some of the saves pulled off it was easy to see why. Aaron Doran stung his gloves with a fierce drive from the edge of the area while he also did well to hang on to several corners won in quick succession by ICT. Nick Ross, who was a stand out player throughout the afternoon was also thwarted by Caraux with a similar effort following a neat exchange of play between himself, Doran and Marley Watkins.
The away side enjoyed a decent spell of pressure midway through the first half. Nacho Novo was a quality player back in his day and he almost rolled back the years with what was almost a stunning goal. Some slack play from the ICT defence saw the ball bounce up well and Novo showed terrific control to try the speculative volley from about 25 yards, it was fast and it was dipping but Dean Brill produced an excellent, fingertip save to deny him. ICT's defence was at sixes and sevens again when confusion from a throw in saw the ball fall to Novo and with the little Spaniard bearing down on goal Brill had to stay big to deny him while Shinnie thwarted a return effort with an excellent slide tackle.
Ross Draper was next to come close for the hosts. The big man showed he had a graceful side when he showed good skill to clip the ball over Taggart, allow the ball to bounce and try the half volley from distance. Caraux had to react quickly to tip it past his near post, a well improvised effort from Draper though, it would have been a great goal. And another great goal was almost scored by Billy McKay, his acrobatic overhead hitting off the keeper at speed for what would have been a tremendous strike.
With half time looming ICT were handed a golden opportunity to strike first blood in the cup tie. At the time virtually nobody in the ground had any idea what the penalty was given for, with most speculating that it was for some sort of handball. Having seen it back on TV it was actually a great spot by the referee as Craig Reid brought down Draper as he was breaking into the area off the ball. Nick Ross was given the chance from the spot and took it, sending Caraux the wrong way in the process to send The Caley Jags into the interval with the lead.
Half Time 1-0
Most of us were bricking it (literally) when the lights went out at half time. Lightning never strikes twice but power cuts can strike as many times as they like and after giving County pelters for their Smash cut to black in October I thought karma was going to deal us a slap. Most of us thought we'd be heading home early again but credit to Scottish Hydro who got the lights back up and running in the time they did, wouldn't have happened with out their fast and efficient work.
By the time we were into the 2nd half most results from other cup ties were just coming through. Laughs were pouring out following Albion's shock result over Motherwell, cup magic producing its usual goods as well as Queen of the South keeping a fighting chance of going through after their hard fought draw against St Mirren. With the game still at 1-0 it was still anyone's game but space was beginning to open up more for the home side as Morton began to tire.
ICT won a corner which was swung in by Liam Polworth. The youngster was making just his 2nd start of the season in the absence of our suspended skipper Foran. His corner came back out to him and he showed good skill to ghost past his man, cut inside and unleash a powerful strike that hit the side netting as it whistled just wide of the near post.
Aaron Doran then missed a guilt edged chance to double the advantage. Marley Watkins was instrumental throughout the 2nd half and his teasing cross fell nicely for Doran at the back post, the little Irishman was on the stretch but with the goal gaping his effort scooped up and went high over the bar. Billy McKay also had an opportunity when Watkins found him at the edge of the box but he tried to cut it back to the advancing Shinnie but he was well challenged by Stirling.
Morton's best chance of the 2nd half was a speculative effort from Dougie Imrie that deflected in off a Morton player but the flag was raised for offside. Dean Brill also had to stay strong as he caught the ball amongst a goalmouth scramble from a corner.
As the game entered the last 20 minutes ICT finally doubled their advantage. The ball was fed out to Marley Watkins who chipped a lovely ball into the box which was met by the head of Billy McKay, his effort seemed to move in slow motion as it dipped into the corner and nestled into the net as he recorded his 3rd goal in as many games.
Morton were beginning to tire and space was beginning to open up more and more but it wasn't until the final minute that the match was put well and truly to bed. Morton were hit on the break and Aaron Doran was given time and space on the wing and had people queuing in the box ready to convert, his low ball across the face of goal was met by McKay who had the simple task of rolling it into the net, doubling his own tally for the afternoon.
Danny Williams and Toby Agdestein were brought on as injury time was added on. The latter making an immediate impact. Billy McKay played a fantastic pass over the defence and Toby was one on one with the keeper, the big Norwegian saw a great chance to get his first ICT goal as he raced through but he was pulled back by Taggart as he shaped to shoot and for the second time in the game ICT had the chance to convert from the spot, while Taggart got a straight red for denying a goal scoring opportunity. With Nick Ross subbed for Williams, Aaron Doran took responsibility and his effort also saw Caraux go the wrong way. With that the game drew to a close and ICT booked their place in the 5th round of the cup.

Full Time 4-0
To summarise :- It wasnt pretty at times but given other results yesterday it was a potential banana skin. Fitness and gulf in quallity showed in the end but were it not for some good work from Brill at times it could have been a different story. The advanced three of Watkins, Doran and Ross seem to be striking a good understanding, left Morton standing at times while young Liam Polworth also impressed. Had Foran being playing I think it would the game would have closed off earlier but we coped well enough in his absence. The strong line up suggested that we were not taking this lightly, and that was proven by the result.
AJS  MotM - Nick Ross: Was at the heart of everything, linked up well with Watkins and Doran, carved out chances for himself and others and dispatched his penalty with good composure. Probably our most improved player of last season, getting better with every game.

Inverness -V- Morton - Sc Cup - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Leaderless Clubs Battle It Out

Scottish Cup action this weekend and both sides find that they have something in common in the run up to this game. Neither team has a permanent manager in place after the departure of Terry Butcher at Inverness and Allan Moore at Cappielow.

Greenock Morton have parted company with manager Allan Moore after a series of poor results have left them two points adrift of Cowdenbeath at the foot of the Championship. A 1-5 thrashing from Livingston has them taking only nine points from fourteen games and a goal difference of minus seventeen is not good. Their ninth Scottish Championship defeat of the season was obviously the last straw for chairman Douglas Rae. Knocking Celtic out of the League Cup was not enough to keep Moore in his job and he takes with him Mark McNally. Moore had been in charge for three and a half years.

Since news of Butcher's worst kept secret was revealed, Duncan Shearer and Scott Kellacher have a 100% record in charge of the team, defeating Hibernian and St Johnstone, something Butcher struggled to do recently. The youth coaches will happily hand over the reins to the new Mr (or Mrs) X prior to the Morton game as the shortlist is whittled down by the Inverness board.

The last time these teams met was two and a half years ago. Incidentally, that was also a Scottish Cup game which was played in the Highlands and it was notable for more than just the 5-1 scoreline in favour of the home side. Adam Rooney was on a hat-trick when he was given a goalden opportunity to notch his third goal. All he had to do was connect with the ball from five yards out with the goal at his mercy, the rest is history .............

Richie Foran (2), Adam Rooney (2), and a debut goal from Chris Hogg saw Inverness cruise past Morton who only had a late consolation from Derek Lyle to show for their efforts. 1893 hardy souls attended that game and were rewarded with a comfortable win for Inverness and six goals to relish. For Inverness, only Graeme Shinnie, Richie Foran, Aaron Doran and Ryan Esson have survived the Butcher's knife from the squad that were selected for that game, although Nick Ross would have been injured at this point.

It's nine games since Morton last beat Inverness, a 2-0 win in November 2010. In fourteen meetings, all of which have been in the old first division apart from the 5-1 cup game, Morton have only two victories to their credit, with one draw and eleven wins for Inverness. Morton have averaged 1 goal per game in seven matches at Inverness and we are running at over 3.5 per game in the Highlands against the Ton. Our worst score at home was the game Nick Ross scored his first goal in a 1-0 win in March 2010. Cue a no-scoring draw now! That would be a first.

Morton's best result against Inverness was also a 5-1 win on a Friday night at Cappielow. Here is the extract from the CTO vaults on this fateful night for the Caley Jags:- This match was switched to Friday night because of the Scotland against England Euro 2000 Qualifier. It proved to be a disaster for the visitors - a crushing defeat by a very good Morton side. It was all very close in the first half but in the second half the Caley Thistle defence went to pieces. Morton took advantage of the errors and finished clinically. Keith Wright scored in 14 minutes but Ross Tokely equalised in 41 minutes. With half time looming Harry Curran made it 2-1 and in the second half Caley Thistle were over-run. Graeme Morrison, Ross Matheson and Stephen Aitken all netted to make the final score 5-1 – the most goals ever lost by Caley Thistle in a match. This fixture had a crowd of 1900.

However, Inverness did gain revenge for that hammering and in January 2010 we thrashed Morton 6-2. Once more from the archives:- Revenge for the 5-1 defeat at Cappielow in November. 0-0 at half time but 8 goals in the second half. The opener was a brilliant solo effort by Kevin Byers and the second was a knock-in by Martin Bavidge after the ‘keeper failed to hold a Barry Wilson shot. Wilson flicked in a Paul Sheerin cross for 3-0 and Sheerin did the same for 4-0 after Maxwell touched out a Wilson cross. Michael Hart pulled one back with a low drive then Wilson made it 5-1 with a superb 25 yard angled lob into the top corner. Calder misjudged a cross from the right and allowed Harry Curran to make it 5-2 but right on the whistle Ross Tokely ran through to hit number 6 after Maxwell pushed away his first attempt. The only blight on the day was a leg injury to Mark McCulloch just before half time – David Hind came off the bench to make his debut appearance, in front of a crowd of 1524.

Back to the future, and Morton will bring a couple of familiar names with them. Ex-Inverness wide midfielder Dougie Imrie who scored the winner at Parkhead from the spot and none other than Nacho Novo, the former Rangers striker. Both of these players have scored here in previous games against Inverness. Imrie, spectacularly in the opening minute for Hamilton with a thirty yard thunderbolt, and Novo for the club that used to be known as Rangers.

Inverness are narrowing down their search for a manager and the final selection will see a new manager definitely in place before our next SPFL game. Paul Hartley is believed to be one of the front runners for the vacancy. James Vincent is still out and Nick Ross lost a tooth or two last week in a face knock but other than that it is a clean bill of health for Shearer and Kellacher to pick from. They won't however have Richie Foran available to them as he is suspended for this cup game.

Morton also have a suspended player in Kabba-Modou Cham, that should please the commentators. Reece Hands and David O'Brien are out but Scott Taggart should return after injury. David Hopkin will supervise the Morton squad who will need a lift after the departure of Moore and their poor league form.

The Scottish Cup fifth round draw will be minus at least four Premiership clubs as they go head to head, top tie being Hearts v Celtic on Sunday. The Rangers face a tricky tie at Falkirk and St Mirren will be sure of a tough game at Queen of the South. Terry Butcher returns to the Highlands as Hibs take on our neighbours Ross County who I'm sure would like to stick one on Terry's chin. And, the romance of the cup is still alive for the Broch, as Fraserburgh travel to Ochilview. Hardly a glamour tie for only non-league club left in the tournament, but good luck to them nonetheless.

Inverness CT -V- St Johnstone - Report

Butcher Who?

Inverness ended a dismal seven game streak against the bogey boys from Perth with a hard fought 1-0 win in the Highlands. Terry Butcher had not picked a side to beat St Johnstone since April 2011, eight games ago, but Shearer and Kellacher ended that grim sequence by taking all three points in a tension packed game with neither side playing at their best. Carl Tremarco brilliantly set up the goal which Billy McKay duly scored, a gem of a strikers goal. Inverness could not build on that early lead but defences were on top and Brill was not troubled throughout as Inverness held on for another vital win.
Well, this was it, the first game without Terry and Mo and it did not take long for the fans to have something to smile about after the disruptions of the last couple of weeks.
Only four minutes on the clock when Inverness won a throw-in on the left. Tremarco took it to Ross who in turn laid it back to Tremarco. The full back burst between two defenders on the left wing and sped towards the goal line where he unleashed a wicked cross between the defenders in the box. Billy McKay reacted brilliantly to turn the ball into the net from five yards, splitting the defenders and notching his tenth goal of the season.
It was a blistering start by the home side who looked eager to impress with Nick Ross displaying some delightful flicks to entertain the crowd.
Sadly, the fun soon petered out as St Johnstone got to grips with the midfield after the first twenty minutes but they lacked penetration as the Inverness back four mopped up everything they had to offer.
Graeme Shinnie, still deposing fit again David Raven at right back, made one of his now familiar runs forward but this time his rising shot cleared the bar. Doran did manage to keep one down but it lacked power and was easy meat for Mannus. Billy McKay made Mannus work from a tight angle but the keeper was always favourite to claim that one, diving low with an outstretched arm to stop the ball finding the net. McKay was a thorn in the Perth side making darting runs and chasing into channels and his hold up play was a joy to behold.
By half time, St Johnstone were enjoying more of the ball as they started to chase the game, but Meekings and Co were denying them any clear cut chances. Meekings did charge down one such raid from Hasselbaink as he capitalised on some shoddy clearances, but that was about as good as it got from the visitors.
Half Time 1-0
The second half continued where the first half ended, St Johnstone trying to push forward and floundering on the rocks of our back line. This suited us and Draper fired one narrowly over from inside the box when he really should have made the keeper work. Watkins found himself some space in a similar position but his effort floated over the bar as well, another wasted opportunity to kill off the game.
What were Perth doing whilst we did this. Well, erm, nothing really. For all their possession, they could not make Brill work, other than a couple of routine catches and the odd punch here and there. Nick Ross faded in the second half after a bright opening but his job was done.
I could tell you more, but to be honest, the second half was an anti-climax with both sides cancelling each other out, and chances few and far between, especially for the visitors, the dangerous front pairing of Hasselbaink and May being well marshalled by Meekings and Warren. Richie Foran was inspirational on the park, helping out in defence and attack, nothing passed him all day and by the time the 94th minute came, St Johnstone had run out of ideas and Brill celebrated another clean sheet.
Full Time 1-0

tm4tj MotM:- A few candidates for this. Tremarco was superb in the opening half as an attacking option, and defended stoutly in the second. Richie Foran was everywhere putting in tremendous tackles across the length and breadth of the park. Meekings and Warren; thou shalt not pass attitude was evident, Meekings pace shackling Stevie May's prodigious talents. However, my contentious award goes to poacher and striker extraordinaire, Billy McKay. His ball retention was superb, allowing us an outlet from defence when needed and his close control simply frustrated the Perth defenders all day, his goal just reward for his afternoons effort.

Inverness CT -V- St Johnstone - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Life After Butcher Begins Now

Managerless Inverness face the bogey boys from Perth this weekend as St Johnstone head North to the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium in the first game of the post Butcher era. Technically it's the second game after Butcher, as he chummed with the Hibernian hierarchy during the game at Easter Road, nailing his colours to the mast there, it was certainly a bit of a give-away as to his future loyalties.

With the whole management team now officially residing at Easter Road, Inverness will continue the search for a new manager once more with names from around the globe being bandied around like nobodies business. However a shortlist is now being processed and the top candidates will be interviewed this week with the successful one being in situ before our Cup game with Morton allegedly. Coaches Duncan Shearer and Scott Kellacher will try to do what Butcher failed to do in recent games against St Johnstone, win, and maybe score a couple of goals, that would make a nice change.

On top of Butchergate, we also have Grassagate which sees Graeme Bennett leave his position as vice chairman within the club, citing "growing reservations about the boardroom mix and the influence that is having".

But, it's not been all doom and gloom up North. Club Captain Richie Foran has taken the plunge and signed on for another three years, that's fantastic commitment from Richie, and Dean Brill has also put pen to paper. Many up here thought that Foran would be the first to follow Butcher out the door, but it's fantastic news for the fans that he will commit his future to Inverness Caledonian Thistle until May 2017. Brill has 14 clean sheets since coming North and he is another great addition, signing on for two years, quickly establishing himself as a fans favourite.

St Johnstone have made an impressive start to the season and sit fifth in the league, just four points below Inverness. They are something of a bogey side for us and seem to hold the Indian sign over us. Our own impressive start to the season faltered at Perth in a 4-0 hammering, ending our unbeaten run of nine games.

Stevie May was the architect of our downfall at Macdiarmid Park, scoring one and setting up the other three with a brilliant display of incisive finishing and creative build up play.

Our record against St Johnstone has been woeful recently, no wins in our last seven games against them, and scoring only twice in that sequence whilst conceding eight.

Inverness' temporary gaffers have a full squad other than long term injury victim James Vincent.

St Johnstone's Frazer Wright is back after suspension but Steven Anderson and Steven MacLean are out injured. David Robertson will not be risked after suffering a slight niggle in training and will not be in the squad for Inverness.

tm4tj Prediction:- It's been a dramatic couple of weeks from the speculation, rumours and official announcements surrounding Butcher and his cronies. The long drawn out affair has soured a lot of the good relationships that Butcher built up during his tenure here, and Malpas' comments regarding the stature of his new employees compared to our diddy club has left a nasty taste in the mouth. I hope this gives our leaderless club the grit and determination to show Butcher that there will be life after he has gone. I'll go for a draw at worst, and a hard fought narrow win at best.

Butcher exits for Easter Road

Teaser Paragraph:
Butcher & Malpas Leave Inverness

Inverness boss Terry Butcher has finally made his decision to leave Inverness Caledonian Thistle to start a new job in Edinburgh. He takes with him his assistant Maurice Malpas to leave Inverness searching for a new gaffer once more. He will take over at Easter Road after the departure of Pat Fenlon left the Leith club managerless.

Butcher has been in charge at Inverness since Craig Brewster took the club to the brink of relegation in season 2008/2009, taking over the reins on January 27th, 2009. His appointment then was too late to salvage the season left in tatters by Brewster, but he did the next best thing by bouncing straight back up the following season, overturning a massive points gap to overhaul Dundee and jump straight back into the SPL.

The next two seasons saw Butcher build his squad and consolidate Inverness in the SPL and by 2011 Inverness just missed out on a top-six finish. Better was to come though and last season Inverness managed to get into that coveted top-six position, and just missed out on Euro Football on the last day of the season.

This season, Butcher's boys have got off to a flyer. Sitting second in the SPFL and looking good for another top-six place and the possibility of European Football once more. Crushing Butchers new side at the weekend and looking good into the bargain, however, it appears that money does talk and the inevitable has happened. Disappointing really after Butcher turned down the option to join Barnsley last season, giving everybody at the club a lift. This protracted decision is not going down well with most of the support, but Inverness Caledonian Thistle have suffered setbacks before, and this won't be the last one.

Official release by the club can be seen here.

Hibernian -V- Inverness CT - Report

Teaser Paragraph:
Butcher Butcher what's the score

On the park Inverness put the will he won't he enigma to one side and brushed a rudderless Hibs eleven aside with two early goals. Unlikely penalty taker Nick Ross sent his spot kick into the net via the keepers palm after fourteen minutes,  but there was nothing iffy about Billy McKay's goal four minutes later as he rounded Williams and stroked the ball into the vacated net from an ever decreasing angle. Graeme Shinnie gave a cluicheadair of the match performance, witnessed on BBC Alba, setting up both goals and his overall play was as good as he has produced on a day where leadership was lacking elsewhere.

"Butcher Butcher what's the score" echoed round the stadium as Terry, cloth cap and all enjoyed a bit of hospitality. It was difficult to say if he enjoyed the score as much. Let's just say that whoever takes on the Hibernian job has a massive task on their hands as they looked like a team with no confidence. The full time score of 2-0 flattered the Hibees who could easily have conceded half a dozen or more. It's maybe just as well for them that Hearts started on minus fifteen, but it's not over yet, and here's a thought. The last team that Butcher inherited before the end of a season were relegated. I know, because we were that team.

Maurice Malpas was joined in the away dugout by Duncan Shearer as Butcher looked as though he had pulled a sickie, and Jimmy Nicholl looked after the interests of the home plodders, who looked like they would have difficulty scoring in a brothel the longer the game went on. On this evidence, the trams will be up and running before Hibs get any better.

Our man at the match was AJS and he is on hand to deliver his scribbling with this composition........................

Football speaks louder than words

Its fair to say as an ICT fan I had a dismal week. My phone was glued to my hand, twitter and CTO were on overtime and the constant question of "Is it officially confirmed?" was running through my mind every time I hit refresh. As the speculation carried on into the matchday I simply wanted it all over and done with as the news of our managers impending departure became the worst kept secret of the week. Terry Butcher said he would see out his contract after he nearly left to join Barnsley last season and it now looks likely that he will be confirmed as the new manager of Hibernian on Monday. This has taught me to take anything said by anyone involved in football with a pinch of salt, regardless of who they are.

The twist in the tale was that Terry got to see his current side (technically) travel to play his new side (still to officially be confirmed) in a match that saw no manager in the dugout. The question was asked all week who would step in if and when Terry left. I must admit I was a bit surprised to see Maurice in there but the fact he was and the stories being put out in Sunday's papers leads us to think that perhaps his future remains in Inverness...make of that what you want.

The reality of it was that the Caley Thistle players still had a job to do. For the 3rd game running it was an unchanged side for the trip to our nations Capital. Graeme Shinnie continuing in his role as the left footed right back while Carl Tremarco recovered from his knock and put in another solid display at left back.

The match started with both side looking a bit rigid. It must have been a surreal atmosphere for both sets of players to be playing in with all the hype that had surrounded both clubs during the week and a few shaky moments at the back saw Hibs come close to grabbing the lead.

A pass back from Shinnie saw Dean Brill slip on his backside and put the ball out for a corner but again from a pass back came the danger of Hibs going in front when Ross Draper's light pass back saw Deano fly into a 50-50 with Scott Robertson. Fortunately the big stoppers punt came straight of Robertson and out of play with ref Bobby Madden judging Robertson to have fouled Brill as well.

ICT began to seize upon the game though and were soon handed an early chance to take the lead. Some fine link up play between Doran and Shinnie saw the ball go out wide to Marley Watkins who's lovely chip pass saw Shinnie latch onto the ball and race into the box before being bundled over by Hibs striker James Collins. Bobby Madden didnt hesitate in pointing to the spot. Nick Ross took responsibility with regular taker James Vincent out injured and struck a powerful spot kick into the keepers right hand corner of the net. Williams got a glove to it but it wasnt enough as the Caley Jags grabbed an early lead.

The loyal band of away supporters who had made the journey to Easter road were to be well rewarded as ICT doubled their lead little over four minutes after gaining it. Again it all came from a fine, passing display. Doran and Shinnie passed and moved their way through the pitch before Shinnie's delightful through ball found Billy McKay. Our little striker beat the offside trap, before rounding Williams, riding McGivern's challenge and curling it into the bottom corner of the net to send both the players and the fans into raptures, mental raptures.

Just 2 minutes later and it was a whisker away from being 3-0. Nick Ross picked up the ball in midfield and fed it out wide to Doran. The little winger had bags of space and raced into the area. He could have shot himself but he unselfishly squared it to Billy and he would have had a tap in were it not for Alan Maybury's interception. Maybury's vital clearance nearly turned into a massive blunder as he saw the ball rebound of the inside of the post, luckily for him Williams was on hand to gather.

The ICT onslaught continued as Graeme Shinnie was seeing plenty of the ball and he also came close to adding to the lead. Foran intercepted the ball in midfield and his lofted pass over the defence found Shinnie on the run. He came close to replicating his goal from last week as he cut inside and curled his shot just wide of the post. Doran also came close with a similar effort.

Hibs were struggling to get out of their half as Billy McKay almost doubled his tally in the game. Marley Watkins shrugged off McGivern before cutting the ball back to Shinnie, his shot cannoned off Robertson before falling to McKay but his low effort was well saved by the feet of Williams at his near post.

With half time approaching Hibs finally began to see more of the ball but were struggling to create any clear cut opportunities. Robertson and Stevenson both saw efforts fly high and wide while Jordan Forster had what was probably their best effort of the game. Kevin Thomson's corner found Forster at the back post but his downward header fell just wide of the mark.

Half Time 0-2

The beginning of the 2nd half saw Hibs enjoy their best spell of the game. They kept the ball well enough but were again relying on set pieces to record any chances of note. Kevin Thomson's sweeping free kick from about 30 yards eluded everyone, including Dean Brill but fortunately for him the ball bounced just past the far post.

Rowan Vine was brought on to add some extra firepower to the Hibs front line. He nearly turned provider as his cross almost fell to James Collins. The big striker endured another frustrating afternoon as he found chances hard to come by, were it not for a cracking interception by Shinnie in this case he would have had that great chance he was searching for.

As the 2nd Half reached the hour mark Hibs were beginning to run out of ideas and Caley Thistle were trying to sniff out a 3rd goal. The counter attack was proving key as Watkins, Ross and Doran were all finding space and time on the ball. Doran flashed a shot over having cut in and Watkins came close with a header that was scooped up by Williams. Watkins soon had another chance to add to the goals. Ross Draper's pass found Doran on the edge of the area and his smart flick fell to Watkins. He went for the speculative volley but while that flew high and wide the movement in the build up was typical of Caley Thistle's quality play throughout the game.

Hibs were chasing the game by this point and more pockets of space were beginning to open up late on. Doran had another speculative effort which flew over and as stoppage time drew in Billy McKay came close again. Ross found Doran out wide and his ball across the face of the goal was met by Billy. He would surely have scored were it not for a well timed interception from Forster.

The remainder of the game played out and the final whistle went. The away day crowd were well received as every ICT player came across to the away end to thank and applaud the fans. The Hibs fans by the 90th minute had dispersed as they were left disgruntled by another miserable performance at home.

Full Time 0-2

To summarise :- It was a bizarre feeling going into the game not knowing who our manager was going to be by the time the game was on. The main focus for me personally as a fan, was to forget about the events of the past week and get right behind the team put out on the pitch, and it was clear that everyone was of the same mindset. We played our part but the real question was could the players step up without Terry and the answer can safely be said - yes. Football was free flowing, the potential for more goals was strong and the spirit in the team appeared stronger than ever. I fully expect Terry Butcher to be named Hibs manager on Monday and after that the buzz of finding a new manager begins. Whoever comes in will inherit a cracking team that plays great football but can also perform when questions are asked. Regardless of what happens in the coming weeks and months a wind of change is imminent at Caley Thistle. I look forward to it with great interest and anticipation.

AJS MotM :- Graeme Shinnie - Foran was solid in midfield while Doran and Ross were industrious going forward but for a man playing on his weaker side and out of position Graeme Shinnie sure has a funny way of showing it and for this he gets my vote. He won the penalty, created Billy's goal with a lovely pass and was unlucky not to score himself with a nice effort. He was a constant threat going forward but he also made some crucial blocks at the back when Hibs were on the ball. Surely a Scotland call up is getting closer...
