Inverness CT -V- Ross County - Report

Teaser Paragraph:
Must Try Harder

Ross County first footed the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium on the 1st of January 2014 and took full advantage of their hosts accommodating hospitality by taking all three points.

It was a towsy encounter which saw Inverness offer the hand of friendship to their neighbours by gently parting their once rock solid defence to allow Scott Boyd and Alex Cooper to tease the points away from the generous Inverness back four who did their level best to help out the Staggies by reducing themselves to ten men midway through the second half, and a late Aaron Doran counter proved once again to be too little too late. I'm afraid the teams report card of late has must try harder written on it, and it's easy to see why.

County were without a win in nine games, gaining just one point from those games and stood 22 points adrift of Inverness, who themselves are not on the best of runs at the moment. The form book does tend to get shredded when it comes to Derby fixtures and so it turned out.

David Raven once more sat on the bench and Danny Williams again filled the midfield vacated by the injured Richie Foran. How much longer will we have to suffer Raven, our natural right back being left out of the picture; over to you Yogi?

County introduced Jordan Slew up front and the sturdy Blackburn Rovers loanee caused early alarm bells to sound with a couple of powerful runs at the Inverness defence. At 6ft 3in Slew is going to be a handful for many a defender, built like a brick shithouse and pace akin to Usain Bolt.

The turning point in this game though was the withdrawal of Inverness' main supply route for Billy McKay as County managed to kick the legs away from our own super sprinter Marley Watkins, having to be subbed shortly after being hacked down by the County defence in the fourteenth minute.

Aaron Doran was unfortunate to see a strike cannon back off a post from eighteen yards in the sixth minute and McKay missed with the rebound, struggling to tame the ball before firing wide. Must try harder.

Just when we looked to have overcome County's initial surge, Tremarco conceded a corner, and when the ball fell to Boyd some ten yards out at the far post his shot caught Tremarco on the way past Brill into the net to give County the opener. Head tennis in your own box is no use. Must try harder

Things went from worse to even worser, if you know what I mean. Shinnie passed the ball loosely in midfield, and play raced to the other end where young Cooper turned inside and outside the recovering Shinnie with ease, and beat Brill with not the most powerful of shots in the world. It mattered not to County as the ball rolled behind Brill and into the net for the second goal inside two minutes. Must try harder

The home fans feared a repeat of the Aberdeen debacle as our defence seemed to be at sixes and sevens. A defence that a couple of weeks ago were the stingiest in the land were now starting to look like plonkers, gifting goals at will and unable to do the simplest of marking and tracking jobs. Just as in the Aberdeen game, a lot of our defensive issues have come in the right defensive area, an area normally covered by a certain Mr Raven, looking on from the bench.

You would have thought this would have stung Inverness into action, but no, we plodded on without any conviction and a lack of imagination. Without Watkins we looked to Doran, Ross and Williams to spark us into life, but there was no spark, and ultimately no life about this Inverness side. Must try harder.

Hallelujah, McKay almost flicked a long throw into the net but Fraser was alert to it and that was as near as we got apart from a weak Nick Ross header, McKay the provider.

Half Time 0-2

Could we see a repeat of the Dons game was the talking point over the half time cuppa, most fans thinking that was impossible given our dire first half performance and few could see a way back into this game. Billy McKay once more being starved of the ball resorting to taking throw-ins just to get a touch of the ball, or maybe because like most of us he is simply fed up of the pathetic throw-ins that we seem to contrive. While I'm on a roll here, when was the last time we scored direct from a free kick. Nobody in my vicinity could recall one, Caley100 mentioned Barry Robson, he could be right.

Unlike the Dons game, we showed little signs of urgency, still content to pass the ball sideways or back and the thought of turning the pitch 90% to offer more attacking possibilities did enter my mind as the football deteriorated to tedium. Free kick after free kick was wasted, crossing opportunities were wasted, most hitting the first defender and throw-ins were as good as a pass back to County. Must try harder.

Draper did force Fraser to parry a shot, but it was straight at him and the rebound was hooked clear by Boyd. Doran flighted one onto the top of the bar but it would have been an injustice had it caught out Fraser. Must try harder.

Draper was becoming a liability and a lunging tackle went unpunished, but when he led with the elbow in an aeriel challenge it was a straight red. He will get little sympathy from me, Inverness having to play out the last quarter 2-0 down and reduced to ten men. Tried too hard!

Agdestein who had impressed since his early introduction went close with a rasping drive after Williams ran across the County defence, but his shot rose just over the bar.

Time was running out fast as County defended in depth although Doran did score a tidy goal, flicking a Polworth through ball over Fraser and nodding it into the empty net, but it was too little too late I'm afraid, many having left the ground by the time this happened.

Garry Warren still found time to drill a ball into the side netting from a tight angle and it was all over bar the shouting, County had won their first game in ten, and we take one point out of a possible twelve over Xmas. Must try harder.

Full Time 1-2

tm4tj MotM:- Toby Agdestein was one player who looked interested and drove forward with intent, it's a pity nobody else turned up. Our defence has turned into a shambles right now and needs repaired, enter David Raven surely. This team has got us into a position that has raised our profile, unfortunately we are now on everybody's radar and teams are beginning to pick us off. We don't become a bad team overnight, but the absence of Foran is hurting us and we look vulnerable with another wafer thin first team squad struggling to cope with one or two absentee's. We might as well get rid of Billy McKay if we are not going to supply him with the ball, he would be as well playing elsewhere. It's a shame not to use his talents while he is here.

Inverness CT -V- Ross County - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
2014 begins with a derby

It's the Highland Derby once again as struggling Ross County make the short trip over the bridge to first foot neighbours Inverness on the 1st of January. That's nice!

The last derby in Dingwall suffered at the hands of the Staggies floodlights as darkness fell across the stadium leaving the not only County in the shadows, but everyone else as well. Seething! That fixture still has to be replayed with the game being abandoned at half-time scoreless.

County are struggling with second season syndrome, unable to reach the dizzy heights of their debut year in the top flight. The table shows that they would be sitting bottom but for Hearts being deducted 15 points before the season started.

Inverness have faltered slightly in the last month, but the decline was hitting before Butcher left as other clubs started to get the hang of our style. Maybe Butcher left at the right time for him with Inverness reaching second spot, as high as could be expected. It's certainly a tough start for John Hughes and despite the lowly position of Ross County, this is a derby and nothing can be taken for granted.

Young Ryan Christie was blooded against Celtic and he has plenty of talent, I'm not sure the derby is the right moment to throw him in at the deep end. However, David Raven is surely in Yogi's thoughts for a return to right back with Shinnie swapping flanks, with maybe Tremarco retaining the full back berth. Danny Williams has come in for plenty of fan criticism, but with Foran and Vincent still out our wafer thin squad has it's limitations. Ben Greenhalgh, Toby Agdestein and Liam Polworth will also be looking for some game time.

The fans choice for this one would see Hughes select this favoured formation, the bring back Raven campaign is in full swing......... if only:-

Brill

Raven  Warren  Meekings  Tremarco

Draper  Ross
Watkins                                  Shinnie
Doran

McKay
Mihael Kovacevic will not play for personal reasons, returning to Croatia to look after his father. Derek Adams is desperate to strengthen his squad, but will have to run with the same squad that lost at Pittodrie. Adams is hopeful that Steven Saunders will be fit after a minor illness.

tm4tj prediction:- Sometimes the occasion gets the better of the finer points of the game during these derby's. Few chances, plenty of blood and guts, a raft of bookings, but sadly quality goes out the window. A Charlie Christie would be handy right now, but the next best thing would be son of. Lo and behold, the saviour could be just round the corner. I wonder................. However, it may be too soon for young Ryan and I'll hedge my bets and go for a tough tackling no scoring hangover draw.

Merry Xmas and have a good New Year from all at Caley Thistle Online

Inverness CT -V- Celtic - Report

Teaser Paragraph:
Early goal sinks Inverness

Before you could say half past twelve, Kris Commons had the ball through Dean Brill's legs and into the back of the net to score what proved to be the winner.

Inverness though, to their credit never wilted and had the better of the rest of the half but were unable to penetrate a holding Celtic defence who saw out the game relatively untroubled bar a couple of decent long range efforts.

The lunch time kick off saw a sizeable crowd gather at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium to watch first take on third in the SPFL on a fine December afternoon.

Celtic were quick out of the blocks and with only two and a half minutes on the clock Commons buried a ball through Brill after a one-two on the left edge of the box saw him stride forward to despatch the ball into the net. Slack defending from Inverness and a great start for the Champions. Many Caley Jags fans were left wondering if the return of Raven would have prevented the defence being opened up so easily and so early.

Comedy moment was provided by Ross Draper in midfield as Crawford Allan crossed his path, the big lad brushing Crawford aside with ease, poor Crawford left to dust himself down and get off the floor to continue his refereeing, electing not to book Draper in the meantime, but his card was marked.

Aaron Doran managed to get one on target after some neat build up play from the left flank and at the other end Inverness were fortunate there were no takers for Stokes inviting cut back as the ball rolled across the box and out for a throw in. Top scorer Billy McKay bottled a header when the ball reached him in the area, but he was unable to get any purchase on the ball and Forster gathered easily.

Inverness were now on top but needed that goal to draw level and it almost came.  Graeme Shinnie warmed the hands of Fraser Forster as he let rip after Marley Watkins won the ball back at the corner flag and fed it into Shinnie's path, and from the angle of the box his powerful shot was well saved by the big keeper.

Half Time 0-1

Graeme Shinnie continued the one man onslaught on Celtic's goal and Forster once more denied him, diving low to his left to turn a 25 yard effort out for a corner.

Commons almost flicked home number two from six yards, the ball going a yard wide when he should have done better, and soon after he lifted a cross onto the back corner of the bar with Brill looking on. It would have been somewhat fortuitous had it gone in but that was about as close as it got in the second half which was slowly drawing to a close with Inverness unable to get behind the Celtic defence.

Best move of the match saw Commons strike from the edge of the box after a neat step over by Samaras and a touch by Stokes, but Brill was just that, diving to his left to push the ball away, Scott Brown making a complete hash of the rebound firing it well wide.

Doran brought out a TV save from Forster from distance, the ball never troubling him enough as Inverness came back into the picture and from the clearance, Stokes set up Brown, who forced Brill into an equally comfortable save from the edge of the box.

Hughes made a last ditch attempt to salvage something from the game and threw on the twinkle toed son of an Inverness footballing Legend. Former Inverness Thistle, Inverness Caledonian and Inverness Caledonian Thistle legend Charlie Christie was bulging with pride as his 17 year old son Ryan entered the fray, and he showed some moments of skill and almost latched onto Drapers headed ball in the last minute of the game, but the lineman had flagged for offside, maybe just as well as wee Ryan could not get over the ball and his header went amiss. Draper himself should have done better with the initial attempt as he headed Doran's cross down and across goal, missing the target, and that was that.

Full Time 0-1

tm4tj MotM:- I'm going for Graeme Shinnie who did his best with a couple of fierce shots on target, but like many others feel it's only a matter of time before David Raven returns to right back, then maybe we will see the benefit of Shinnie foraging on the left. Remember we are still without Vincent and Foran and needs must.

Teaser Paragraph:
The Bhoys are back in town

Celtic are now sprinting to the title since their European adventure finished, brushing allcomers aside, and it's the turn of Inverness Caledonian Thistle to face the Tic's juggernaut as it rolls towards the SPFL trophy.

We managed to snatch a draw from the jaws of victory in August as Celtic came from 0-2 down to earn a draw. It could have been oh so different had Aaron Doran not dithered on the ball inside the Celtic box allowing the defender the chance to recover. That's history now.

Neither side were at their best on Boxing Day, Inverness taking a point at Firhill and Celtic edging past St Johnstone thanks to an early van Dijk goal, but missing numerous chances to increase their lead.

The only domestic side to beat Celtic this season is Morton, after extra-time in the League Cup. So, there is a glimmer of hope for all the wee clubs out there.

Inverness look to have gone off the boil recently, the first half against Aberdeen being a prime example where we looked like a schoolboy side at times.

We do miss captain Richie Foran, and his possession and ability to engineer attacks were evidently sadly lacking at Partick. David Raven once more started on the bench

Richie Foran and James Vincent miss Sunday's lunchtime fixture with Celtic.

Celtic's Charlie Mulgrew is a doubt with the groin injury that has kept him out of the last three games.

Derk Boerrigter, Mikael Lustig, Beram Kayal and Steven Mouyokolo  remain out.

Partick -V- Inverness CT - Report

Teaser Paragraph:
Jags draw a blank

The Thistles failed to find the net, but for Partick especially it wasn't for the want of trying, a couple of glaring misses enabling Inverness to take a point and that moves them back above Aberdeen and Dundee United, although Motherwell took the biggest leap into second place.

Today's report is made in school, The Mantis & Alternative Maryhill show that great minds do think alike..........

The Mantis thought we were very poor today, thought Partick were more up for it and worked very hard. The lad Doolan missed a sitter of a header before half time although it would have been harsh on us.

Second half they must have missed at least 3 more sitters and we were lucky to get a point. Archibald seems to encourage them to shoot on sight with the result that they kept having to fetch new balls every time somebody blootered it out of the park.

We only showed quality in flashes, you could see the difference in the sides there, but it only lasted about 2 mins at a time.

First look at Williams and not very impressed, centre mid along with Draper who wasn't at his best either today but probably because he was doing two jobs.

Seen Marley a few times now and though he's got the skill and pace, not sure he's got the temperament or the heart. Not sure about Tremarco either, fairly solid but doesn't have any idea what to do with the ball.

Would like to see Dave the Rave back with Shinzaa, Josh and Warren who as usual were superb. Doran not bad but lacks that extra spark. Wee Billy battled away as always for little reward, too many long punts for him to fish out of the sky. Keep it on the deck and we're a good side.

Felt sorry for Nicky Ross who was hooked for Greenhalgh, who in turn looked like he could have changed the game if he'd got half an hour.

Alternative Maryhill agreed we didn't get started at all yesterday, which was particularly frustrating as Partick looked like they might have wilted if we'd put any sustained pressure on them - they didn't have a great deal of presence and conceded possession in midfield relatively easily. The problem was, so did we, and in the end Partick created the far better chances and were unlucky not to win.

There's no question that we missed Foran's influence, and the decision to play Williams in his place was somewhat surprising - he's eased off the ball far too easily, isn't strong enough in the tackle and seemed to be chasing the game most of yesterday. I'd hope to see Ross in there for the Celtic game, but the fact that Ross has been the first player substituted in each of the last two games (wrongly, in my opinion, in each case) makes me wonder how important to the team Hughes believes he is. Greenhalgh did pretty well when he came on and has maybe staked a claim for a place, but I'd like to have seen him replacing either Williams, with Ross dropping back, or Doran, whose performance levels are currently way below the level they were at in the early games of the season. There's perhaps an argument for resting him for a couple of games and making him fight for his place ahead of the semi-final. I think that Doran at the top of his form is unquestionably part of our strongest team, but at the moment he's a long way short of that form.

The defence was pretty sound throughout, with with Meekings and Brill the stand-outs, but they were culpable in the hugely ineffective long ball strategy that we employed for most of the game - my one gripe with both Brill and Gary Warren is that they don't seem to look for a good out-ball properly but instead just hammer it up towards McKay or Doran. If we do that against Celtic then we'll just be inviting pressure onto us and we'll take a hammering. I am, I must confess, a bit worried about the Celtic game now - if we struggled to create anything against a hard working but limited Partick side, then I can't see how we can hope to take anything against a side that is, it is now becoming clear, streets ahead of the rest of the league. Hopefully Hughes can look at yesterday's performance and set us up in a way that actually plays to our strengths on Sunday.

And he has some sympathy for the new gaffer here.........There was a noticeable lack of creativity or meaningful possession in the middle of the park yesterday and it meant that we built very few decent moves and more often than not the midfield was bypassed altogether. Williams offered neither strength nor creativity in that position, which meant that Draper, as Mantis pointed , was doing two jobs.  I'd hope that Ross, while lacking Foran's dig, would at least give us some vision in there. I'm not sure if Devine would do that.

Of course, Ross might just find himself completely outmuscled and outpassed by the Celtic midfield; there are no easy solutions for Hughes here.

Partick Thistle -V- Inverness CT - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Thistle Do

The two SPFL Thistles do battle on Boxing day with Inverness looking to avenge an earlier season defeat at the hands of the Harry Wraggs. That defeat came about in bizarre circumstances at the Caledonian Stadium when odd refereeing and misfortune befell the Caley Jags and Partick nicked all three points in a 1-2 reverse.

Richie Foran misses out having injured his shoulder in the defeat against the Dons. He looks likely to be out for the next four games minimum. David Raven returned halfway through the Dons game and should stay at right back. Shinnie flitted across the park in that game to accommodate Raven and played ahead of Tremarco and that could be the same format for today. With James Vincent still out, Marley Watkins could return after a dead leg kept him out of the Aberdeen fiasco.

John Hughes blamed trying too hard Inverness' only crime for the defeat to Aberdeen. It's early in Hughes' Inverness career and the tongues are wagging already, but come on folk, give the guy a break and let's see how it works out for Yogi.

Partick Thistle left back Aaron Taylor-Sinclair faces a late fitness test to see if he has recovered from a knock. Right-back Stephen O'Donnell returns following a hip injury but Isaac Osbourne and Sean Welsh are still out.

Alan Archibald is fairly optimistic about his sides chances of getting something from the game dismissing his teams recent run of results and citing decent performances as the reason for his optimism.

After the Aberdeen result, here's something to cheer you up.

tm4tj prediction:- I don't see this as an easy game at all and a point would not be a bad result. We are capable of getting all three points but teams are now sussing us out and with Foran out it could be a difficult day. 1-1 a distinct possibility.
