Inverness CT -V- Dunfermline - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
The Steak Bridie’s Cometh Inverness have edged ever closer to the finish line in what was a quite dramatic week of football. The fat lady is humming her tune and will hopefully sing the song before D day on the first of May. Only Dundee and Ross County stand in the way of ICT achieving the impossible dream; return to the SPL in one season. We sneaked under the radar last weekend with a very hard fought win at Palmerston. This was due to The Staggies finest hour and a half. They outplayed Celtic to reach the Scottish Cup Final, an absolutely fabulous result for them which made all the headlines. In fact, you could say they were headline grabbers, as supercountywentballisticcelticwereatrocious. So, hats off to County for that win and I’m sure most ICT fans wish them well in the final against Dundee United. The week of plaudits was rounded off as Rooney won the IrnBru player of the month with Butcher winning the manager of the month on the back of six straight wins. Last weekend, a double from Adam Rooney was the difference between the sides as Inverness saw off a stern challenge from the Doonhamers. We came from behind to take all three points after Willie McLaren had opened for Queens. Grant Munro had flashed a header into the roof of the net between Rooney’s double and Bob Harris was red carded to seal a miserable day for the home side, which promised much early on. It was a vital three points for us as Dundee kept up the pressure with an undeserved win at Partick, where Tony Bullock was the hero thwarting the Jags on numerous occasions. This weekend, Inverness take on one of the leagues most entertaining sides in Dunfermline. Inconsistency has been their downfall this season, but our last two meetings have resulted in draws. In the opening league fixture, only an injury time spectacular from Lee Cox enabled us to snatch the points in an evenly contested match. Andy Kirk levelled for Pars in the next one at Inverness when his mis-timed header looped over a stranded Ryan Esson. David Proctor had put us ahead on the stroke of half time. The third game was almost called off as heavy snow flurries engulfed East End Park and the football matched the weather, with neither side breaking the deadlock. Who will be the danger to Inverness in this one? David Graham looked very capable in the opener and has that bit extra class. He is able to drift past defenders with ease and will need close attention. Ex-Kilmarnock wide player Willie Gibson is always a handful. The fiery midfielder can turn games with his direct style and with the Inverness defence having to be reshuffled for this one then he may well have more leeway than normal. Inverness are on an incredible run at the moment in the league. It’s now eighteen games unbeaten and six wins on the trot. These statistics have seen Inverness go seven points clear of Dundee, although the Tayside men have a game in hand. Ross County are now finding the going tough as their cup run eats into their energy reserves. Dunfermline themselves are now unable to win the league but you could not get a cigarette paper between the sides this season and I would expect this game to be just as tight. The Pars have only won twice in Inverness out of nine attempts. In all nineteen league games, Inverness have won eight, Dunfermline four with seven draws. Squads for the weekend Inverness boss Terry Butcher will be without two influential players this weekend as bookings start to take there toll. Captain Grant Munro will have to watch from the stand along with battling midfielder Lee Cox. Munro has been pretty solid of late and scored a crucial goal last week. He holds the defence together and his armband will need to be carried by maybe Rossco or Golly. Cox has formed a terrific partnership with Russell Duncan lately and their understanding has blossomed during our surge to the top. One possibility would be to fit Bulvitis into the back line. If Proctor stays at right back then that is only one change in the back four. That still leaves us the quandary of who will partner Duncan in the holding area. Stratford might just be favourite as he has been given some playing time recently although his inclusion would weaken the ability to win the ball in that department. Roy McBain could be a natural left sided replacement, or will Dani Sanchez get a start. Possible ICT line up
Esson Proctor Tokely Bulvitis Golabeck Stratford Duncan Hayes Odhiambo Foran Rooney Dunfermline boss Jim McIntyre will also be without some quality players. Former Hearts striker Andy Kirk is injured along side strike partner Graeme Bayne. Keeper Greg Paterson suffered a horrific leg break against Dundee recently and his place will be taken by loan keeper Chris Smith from St Mirren, who was originally loaned out from Dunfermline. The Pars have an unfortunate list of loan keepers this season. Long term absentee Stephen Glass, along with Neil McGregor, Scott Muirhead and suspended Joe Cardle make up McIntyres missing list. Last time out DUNFERMLINE Squad: Chris Smith; Calum Woods, Chris Higgins, Andy Dowie, Austin McCann ©; Steven Bell, Gary Mason, Willie Gibson; David Graham, Ross Campbell (Nick Phinn 88), Steven McDougall. SUBS: Greg Ross, Graeme Holmes, Alex Burke, Greg Fleming (GK). Tm4tj prediction It has been easier to keep picking a winner recently with our tremendous run in progress. Can we keep this run going? Yes we can is my suggestion. This will be another close encounter of the fourth kind, but our determination and drive towards the top will be a key factor. We have more to play for than the Pars and this could give us the edge. We have never scored more that two goals against Dunfermline, but what better time to do it than this weekend. The loss of Munro and Cox is a blow for us but the visitors are short as well. Rooney was pipped to 25 goals by former player Rory McAllister during the week, but his scoring exploits are taking us closer to the title and let’s hope he can keep his scoring streak going. Five games in a row for him so far and another three scoring games will go a long way to securing promotion. What does that mean I hear you say? Well, I am going for a hard earned victory for Inverness. Mon the Caley Jags

QotS 1-3 Inverness CT - Report

Kings of Queens

QotS went ahead early through Willie McLaren but a double from Adam Rooney and a goal from Grant Munro seals all three points for ICT
CaleyD summed up after the game, and a few drams:
COME ON THE CALEY JAGS!!!!
What a fecking day, great company, great result for C*unty, great result for the FAMOUS ICT, and a few drams back in the Innes (maybe slightly more than a few) before finally getting home about 5 minutshh ago. hic!
Not the hottest performance ever, but much like Morton the boys did what needed to be done and the 3 goals were all well taken. I'm not sure I have ever seen a header scored with such ferocity and pace...not only was I surprised it never burst the net, but feck knows how it never burst Munros head!!!! He could well be down a few IQ points after that, but absolutely phenomenal.
Rooney looked knackered after scoring his second, and who could forgive him for a moment of "fer feck sake guys, I've scored two, will someone please blow the full time whistle" as he, yet again, ran himself ragged from start to finish.
Credit to Queens, the set out with a plan to stop us playing football and give us as little time on the ball as possible and it was as effective as anyone has been against us this side of Christmas....but we wanted the win more than them and I believe nothing was going to stop us getting it.
An emosh Johndo told this tale: In some ways I felt very sad as the final whistle blew. The sight of Butcher and all the players swopping appraise with the fans said it all but I simply love Dumfries and I love Palmerston and it is beginning to look as if it will not be on my travel itinerary next season. And strangely enuff I felt quite buoyed by the Tinkerville victory and it felt that the two of us could put Highland football firmly back on the map again.
Pre match it was like a meeting of feckin nations in the wee main Stand bar as Sneckites from Yorkshire, Brum, Coventry, Huddersfield and a newbie from Newcastle ALL bought me wee double voddies. 😛
As fer the game the nervousness of Tuesday night was clearly evident and led to the Queens nicking a goal early doors. Palmerston has never really been a great hunting ground fer us and some worried frowns were there to be seen. But credit to the boys as the goal actually seemed to wake them up and spur them on and personally I felt that we were the far better side from there on.
It would have been worse if it hadn't been for Rosscoe's goal line clearance just before the goal and Esson's later positional sense. Their keeper Fox made two stunning saves - both from Eric I think - but we kept on plugging away and Foran and Rooney combined to bring us back level just before the break. Another example of the goal finishing prowess of Rooney.
I felt that we dominated the second half. Munro perhaps should have scored although he evidently made up for it later. But Lady Luck was also shining on us yesterday. Craig was taken off injured, it looked like Queens had taken the lead when Kean smashed in a diving header but was ruled offside. Talking to the Queenies afterwards they did concede that he was offside which it didn't look like that from the other end. The ref certainly got a bit cheesed off with the Queenie back chat and started giving most of the decisions to us. Even Russeldhino noticed and was keeping his gob shut !!
I would have to say that Granty's header was as good a headed goal as I have seen in some time - it didn't have smash in to the top corner - and he ran to his family afterwards and the ICT stand erupted. As far as I am concerned there was only one winner after that.
And Lady Luck struck again when the ref handed Harris a straight red for what was quite clearly a yellow card offence - Johnny Hayes was going nowhere when he was albeit cynically chopped down. I though that Harris's attempt to make a meal of an injury to himself may have influenced the decision. I actually thought a few of the Queenies heads went down after that.
The third goal was the relief maker and ecstasy producer. Foran, who had been struggling with a leg injury, fired through a wonderful defence splitting ball and Rooney used up the very last of his energy cells ponced on it and cracked home yet another beauty - comparative with the Morton game.

Inverness took a step closer to returning to the Scottish Premier League but they had to fight all the way against 10-man Queen of the South.
Willie McLaren put Queens ahead after 10 minutes when he cut inside to hit the ball past Ryan Esson.
Adam Rooney pulled the visitors level before the break and set up Grant Munro for the Highlanders' second.
Queens defender Bob Harris was red carded for his challenge on Jonny Hayes before Rooney scored again late on.
Terry Butcher's side are now two wins away from claiming the First Division title.
Ross Tokely headed a Paul Burns effort off the line after six minutes as Queens started strongly.
Manager Kenny Brannigan had moved McLaren from the left to the right and, after Rocco Quinn played a great ball through to the winger, he showed he could play on either side as he cut in to fire past Esson at the near post.
Queens keeper Scott Fox pulled off two terrific saves to deny Eric Odhiambo, the first with his feet after 21 minutes and then a great one-handed save two minutes later.
Stewart Kean then had a great chance to extend Queens' lead as he chased down a long ball from Harris but, after holding off his marker, he shot over.
On the half-hour mark, Fox made another one-handed save, this time to turn away a header from Rooney.
Rooney eventually got on the scoresheet four minutes before the break. Richie Foran sprinted away from the Queens defence and cut the ball across from the by-line for Rooney to fire into the net from inside the six-yard box.
video part 1
Queens were up for it again after the restart, Quinn, Kean and McLaren all with chances.
Kean did have the ball in the net on the hour mark but the offside flag went up on the far side.
Munro received Rooney's pass to edge Inverness into the lead on 67 minutes.
With 18 minutes remaining, Harris challenged Hayes in front of the Queens dugout and, after treatment, both players got back to their feet and referee Charlie Richmond showed the defender a straight red card.
Inverness took advantage of the extra man with Rooney adding to his goal tally with two minutes left.

QOS -V- Inverness CT - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Bigger things are at stake than the forthcoming General Election. As Broon asks the nation to get behind him, Inverness Caledonian Thistle edge ever closer to bouncing back to the SPL in one season.
ICT out to Doonhamers - Themann4thejob's Preview Bigger things are at stake than the forthcoming General Election. As Broon asks the nation to get behind him, Inverness Caledonian Thistle edge ever closer to bouncing back to the SPL in one season. Who would have thought that, as the kids played with their Xmas toys, we would embark on a recovery mission impossible to scrape our way to the top of the table. Well, here we are, on the verge of rubber stamping one of the greatest comebacks since Lazarus. It’s not over yet, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. A difficult task awaits Inverness this weekend and we head towards England, well almost. We stop off in Dumfries for a vital game of football which will once more test the nerves of the Highland support. While we look to maintain our cushion at the top, our good neighbours will have played their most important football match ever. County kick off at dinner time in a David v Goliath scenario. A place in the Scottish cup final awaits the winner, so good luck to the gudgies for that. Inverness have been on a terrific run recently winning their last five games as part of a seventeen game unbeaten run. We return to the scene of the crime on Saturday as Dumfries was where this unbeaten series of results commenced. An eventful match at Palmerston on the 5th December ended all square, and as the dust settled, we finished the game with nine men, Queens had one more, Butcher was sent to the stand and the points were shared. Foran and Duncan were sent off for second yellow offences, amid some angry scenes and chants for Mrs Gringo’s birthday. Jonny Hayes had scored the opener for us and as a result of Barry Wilson inviting Richie Foran to earn his red card; Bob Harris scored a tremendous trademark free kick to level from the aforementioned indiscretion. Mr Butcher then allegedly fell out with some of the Palmerston décor and all in all, it was a hectic day. Honours are even this season though as Queens trounced us when we were struggling early in the season, although we reversed that 1-3 scoreline last time out. There have been two hat-tricks in these encounters, Derek Holmes stunning Inverness in the first game, and Adam Rooney replying for us in the last one. There’s not a lot to choose from in terms of previous history, with Inverness having won ten from twenty-two games, with Queens winning eight. We have only won twice at Palmerston with Queens coming out on top four times. However, our push to the top has seen a new determination to our play and our most recent run is formidable. Queens are on a four game unbeaten run, but that has included three draws. They battled hard to get a draw at Dingwall in midweek even when reduced to ten men. Keeper Fox was outstanding as they withstood the familiar County charge towards the Jailend, and they almost held on for a win but for a deflected goal from former ICT flop Andy Barrowman. Jordan McMillan was the red card victim and will miss this game. Squad News Inverness boss Terry Butcher has no fresh injury worries, which means he has a full squad to choose from. The one question being asked by the fans is, Eric or Dani? Eric sometimes looks lost during a game but has come up with the goods recently, although by all accounts he was quieter at Greenock. Dani on the other hand gets involved and can spot an opening, but the ball has not run kindly for the little Spaniard in front of goal, preferring to hit the woodwork more often than not. It’s an interesting choice as Mr Butcher obviously sees the guys perform in training therefore his judgement has to be respected, but it is certainly a split decision on the forum. Daniel Stratford is another one up for debate, as the game passes him by at times, but with Russell Duncan back from suspension he will have to be content with a place on the bench. Suspensions are looming for Captain Grant Munro and the superb Lee Cox. Their points tally means they will sit out the Dunfermline game next week. Queens temporary charge hand Kenny Brannigan has some thinking to do before this one. Hutton, Harris, McMillan, Lilley and Adams are possibly all out. Hutton has been having a great season and will be missed although Fox looked excellent at Dingwall in midweek. Bob Harris is one of the top wing backs in the league and Queens could be without his expertise at dead ball situations, which will be a plus for ICT. Harris and Adams may recover in time but are rated doubtful. Lilley and McMillan are however, suspended. Queens have also recently recruited former player Sean O’Connor to see the season out. He may lack match fitness, but his overall play could be a danger, and his introduction against County sparked the Queens goal after his mis-hit shot fell kindly for Burns to net. McKenna starts a three match suspension from the Raith game next week. The very latest on Queens team news is that Hutton and Harris are likely to be named in the squad for ICT game. Possible Queens line up Fox McKenna   McAusland   Reid   Hamill Burns   Quinn   Scally   McLaren Holmes   Weatherson
Tm4tj prediction I may be pushing my luck now, but I am going for a rare ICT victory in Dumfries. Our new found confidence and staying power has seen us surge to the head of the table. With County and Raith in the middle of a plethora of difficult games, points will be dropped. Dundee have rediscovered how to win, but is it too late? Has the damage already been done by Jocky Scott or can Gordon Chisholm turn it round?. All ICT have to do is keep winning, that’s the difficult part though. If our Paddy Power Treble can keep going, then they might just see us through this difficult tie. It’s all getting very interesting at the top of the table. After last weeks cliffhanger, not many of us have any nails left, thank goodness theres only four games left. Mon the Caley Jags

Ginger Jaggy's Preview
This weekend we travel to Dumfries to take on Queen of the South at Palmerston. After our win at Morton on Tuesday night we now have a 7 point lead over Dundee even if we have played a game more. We have four matches left and arguably this is the hardest game left with Dunfermline and Dundee to come at home and a tricky trip to the west coast to play Ayr United at Somerset Park. So there are some hard games to go if we are to be crowned champions.
As for this game it is another 6 pointer at the top. We do have a healthy lead even though Dundee have a game in hand so a defeat tomorrow wouldn’t be the end of the world even though it would allow Dundee to close to within four points of us. But for our opponents Queens, it is a must win game for them. They have three games in hand but a defeat tomorrow will make it virtually impossible for them to catch us so it is a very important game for them.
Caley Thistle don’t have a bad record against our opponents even though we made a terrible start. The first game between these to clubs saw the Derek Holmes show in Inverness. Holmes scored a hat trick that day with his first goal coming in the opening minute, we replied through a wonderful free kick from Johnny Hayes but Holmes made sure all three points went back south with two goals in the last ten minutes of the game.
We then made our first trip to Palmerston and came away with a creditable point even though it could have been better. We took the lead with a good finish from Hayes yet again and we looked pretty comfortable until 13 minutes from time when we suffered a double whammy of misfortune. First Richie Foran was given a second yellow card for a petty trip on ex Caley Thistle winger Barry Wilson which led to a free kick. The red was bad enough but a second blow was made minutes later when free kick specialist Bob Harris equalising with a wonderful strike. If it hadn’t been for that moment we may have won as we just about deserved to take all three points.
But we were on the end of a better result in our last match played in Inverness only about a month ago. This game was filled with controversy as the original game was called off about 3 hours before kick off when the fans were already on their way up north. The weather was beautiful but due to the cold conditions during the night it was too late to defrost the pitch and so an angry Queens team left with the game to be replayed in a midweek in March. And it didn’t get much better for our opponents as this time it was the Adam Rooney show as he like Derek Holmes in the first game scored a hat trick with the consolation scored by Holmes from the penalty spot.
So it will be a difficult game but we will look to continue our amazing unbeaten streak after our 2-0 victory over Morton on Tuesday. Queen of the South were also in action on Tuesday taking on Ross county in Dingwall. They could only collect a draw and that puts themselves in a must win situation otherwise they will find it impossible to catch us even with 3 games more to play. Team news Yet again Terry Butcher will have a fully fit squad to choose from for the visit to Palmerston. He will hope that Palmerston will bring some more rewards after our draw there started our 17 game unbeaten run. Queens have a few problems with David Lilley and Jordon McMillan both suspended. They are also missing Jamie Adams while there is a doubt over Bob Harris even though they expect him to be fit to play.

Morton 0-2 Inverness CT - Report

Richie Foran and Adam Rooney scored at either end of the game to safely tuck another three points into the ICT belt.
4 games to go and ICT sit proudly atop the first division table.
Alternative Maryhill summed up like this:
Strange game. We didn't play much good football and never seemed fully in control, yet I'd struggle to name an ICT player who didn't give 100% and I don't remember feeling the team was in danger of losing a goal at any point. Duncan and Cox were outstanding and Tokely had a very good game at the back. The front three gave everything even though things didn't always come off for them. The biggest worry was how badly the team seemed to tire after about an hour; hopefully all our rivals are finding themselves in the same position. Fantastic attitude throughout, though, and great to see the pumped fists from TB at the end again.
Holiday football is dangerous, though. I have a horrible hangover, after being discovered waiting for a night bus that was never going to come by some of my 'clientele' from work, and poured into a taxi by them. Not good. Ah well. Bring on Queens...

Referee B. Winter Attendance 1277 report by a bitter greenockmortonfc.blogspot
Bottle job: Whistler Brian Winter's scandalous decision not to show Stuart Golabek a red card when he denied David Witteveen a clear goalscoring opportunity was the key moment in a match that eventually ended with Caley Thistle extending their lead at the top of the table.
James Grady made one enforced change to the team that drew 3-3 with Queen of the South: Carlo Monti coming in to replace the injured Jim McAlister at left midfield.
As per usual, Morton started the game with all guns blazing and could've scored three times before Caley Thistle hit us with a sucker punch in the 6th minute. In the 2nd minute, David Witteveen had a great shot saved by Ryan Esson and then dragged a shot wide two minutes later after being put clear by Peter Weatherson.
Weatherson had a low shot saved by Esson before Caley broke up the field and scored the opener. Johnny Hayes - who was playing in the Messi role of left footed player on the right wing, which seems to be all the rage - terrorised Alan Reid by running directly at him before dropping the shoulder and skipping past him to the byline where he was given too much space to stand up an excellent cross for Richie Foran, who headed in at the back post. I really didn't think that Foran would score as he looked to be at an acute angle from which it would be too difficult to score. But he did and he scored. For me, Colin Stewart should've done a bit better. He seemed to take an age to scramble across his goal to try and claw the ball out.
Stewart looks to be suffering from a real crisis of confidence at the moment. His decision making appears to be clouded by the goal he conceded against Dunfermline. Now, he kicks the ball out of play at every opportunity to ensure that he doesn't make a similar mistake to the one in the Pars game. And, although the safety first approach is one I like to see players employ, I think Colin is doing it at times when he doesn't have to.
Normal service was resumed immediately after the Highlander's goal as Michael Tidser continued to orchestrate the game in the middle of the park. We were playing some great football and some of the link play between Tidser, Monti, Weatherson and Witteveen was a joy to watch. It is just unfortunate that we don't seem to have that cutting egde in front of goal.
However, all the evidence seems to suggest that big Witteveen could be the man to change that. He seems to get into the right positions and certainly isn't afraid to have a pop at goal. He almost levelled the game twice in two minutes, but both headers were saved by Esson. The first was a looping header from a Weatherson cross. The ball appeared to be dropping into the net until Esson jumped out from behind the camouflage of a team mate - the goalkeeper and outfield players were both wearing shirts with red on them - to pluck the ball out of the air. The second header was a bit firmer but Esson was well positioned to catch the Wittster's effort.
The outcome of the match could've been so different if referee Brian Winter hadn't absolutely bottled out of giving Golabek a red card for a last man trip that denied Witteveen a one-on-one with the keeper in the 25th minute. "I don't think it was a clear goalscoring opportunity. As a striker, James Grady will say it's a red, but I say it was a yellow," Terry Butcher said. But don't listen to him, it was definitely a goalscoring opportunity and how Winter never flashed the red I'll never know. I've never been one to get overly annoyed at referees - but this was one of the worst decisions I've ever seen at Cappielow. I actually felt physically sick when the ref produced the yellow.
Caley almost doubled their lead completely against the run of play in the 31st minute. Eric Odhiambo caught Neil MacFarlane dwelling on the ball in midfield and quickly switched the ball to Hayes, who ran for goal and curled a magnificent effort over Stewart towards the top corner. For once, our luck was in as the ball crashed against the face of the bar and rebounded to safety.
One thing I really like about Witteveen is that he's not shy when it comes to having a shot at goal. A point that was demonstrated by the fact that he actually had two pot shots at goal in the same minute, the 33rd to be precise. Unfortunately, both efforts were straight at Esson and fairly straightforward saves at that. But, as the old cliche goes: if you don't shoot, you don't score. So keep it up David.
It was a real blow to go in one down at half-time as our play deserved so much more. The fans recognised this and gave the team an appreciative round of applause as they left the field. Yet you'd have thought it was a whole new team that emerged for the second period as the hunger and confidence seemed to have evaporated as they put in a second half display that was in stark contrast to the previous 45 minutes.
We only really threatened the Caley goal on one occasion in the second half - and what an effort it was. Witteveen nipped in ahead of Ross Tokely to steal possession and before the Highland behemoth could blink, the Wittster had rattled an audacious volley towards goal from fully 40 yards. Esson was stranded but to his relief the ball landed a couple of feet wide of his right hand post. It was a great piece of thinking by a player who looks a step ahead of most players at this level, particularly when it comes to getting a shot away. I always think of Andy Gray's commentary when I watch Witteveen as he seems to catch keepers out by firing off his shots really early and before they've had a chance to get themselves into position to make a save.
Five minutes later, Stewart redeemed himself with a great save to deny Adam Rooney, who'd burst through after slack play by MacFarlane. If it were down to me, I'd only use MacFarlane sparingly from now on. Although he still has good positional sense, I think, at 32-years-old, he's too slow to compete in the midfield. He reminds me a bit of Alan Mahood when he came back to Cappielow for his third spell a few years back ; a great player in his day, but one whose best years were behind him. Mahood knew it and retired, and I think Neil might do the same at the end of his contract next season.
Caley put the result beyond doubt in the 84th minute. Rooney and Russell Duncan traded passes before the Irishman took advantage of Dominic Shimmin's hesitancy by slotting a sublime finish round Stewart and into the bottom right hand corner for his 21st goal of the season.
It was a case of the same old story as Morton failed to take advantage of the chances they created in a strong opening period and were then made to pay from some slack defending at the other end.
The outcome would've probably been different if the referee had given Golabek his marching orders, but he didn't. It's becoming a concern that we continue to fail to score when we are on top and then fade in the second half of matches. We need to start taking our chances. Hopefully Witteveen does a Wakey '08 and scores a few crucial goals to save us from the play-offs. On recent displays, including his one, I've got a wee feeling he might.
Boo hoo hoo!

Tonight we travel down the A9 to Greenock to face Morton at Cappielow. The match is one of five left in the campaign and the result could have serious ramifications at both ends of the table. GingerJaggy provides a preview of today's game
Gingerjaggy's Preview Tonight we travel down the A9 to Greenock to face Morton at Cappielow. The match is one of five left in the campaign and the result could have serious ramifications at both ends of the table. For us, as Dundee don’t play tonight, anything but a win will put us under pressure as they will have a game in hand and be able to trim the lead down. For Morton they are 4 points clear of the relegation play off place but have played 3 more than Raith and a game more than Ayr before tonight’s encounter. So at each end, the three points are vital for different reasons. Another important game tonight is in Dingwall, where County and Queens battle it out to remain in contention. We will head down south on the back of that late dramatic victory over Raith, thanks to Richie Foran’s acrobatic strike. Hopefully we have realised that no game is easy as every team has an issue to settle, whether it is promotion or in Morton’s case desperately battling to avoid the drop to the 2nd division. After being 3-1 up at home the fans will expect that the boys go out and do the job, and not have to produce another late late show. I for one am probably not alone in that our hearts won’t take that again. Morton though will be the same as Raith in the fact that they may be struggling for points but must not be underestimated, or we may just trip up. They will be on a high after a picking up a point against one of our promotion rivals Queen of the South. Both teams will go into the game on a positive note and it looks to be a keenly contested game. Our record this season against tonight’s opponents has been a good one with us winning all our games so far. The first game at Cappielow ended in a comfortable 3-0 victory to us. We took the lead just on half time with Dani Sanchez the scorer and we followed that with two more goals in the second half from Foran and Proctor to round off an emphatic victory. Our first game in Inverness finished with another comfortable 3 points with a 4-1 victory. The game was remembered for a Rooney hat trick with the other scorer Bulvitis. Morton did score through Eric Paartalu, the only goal so far for Morton against us this season. Due to the weather being a touch inclement this winter, this game was postponed for a while so it meant our last meeting would also be in Inverness. This time though we struggled, with a Nick Ross goal being the difference in a very uninspiring game where Morton frustrated us and nearly took a draw. This game serves as a warning of how difficult tonight could be so the boys will have to take notice and perform in what could be a very big and slippery banana skin. Team News Caley Thistle are back to full strength as we welcome the return of the in form Russell Duncan. Saturday’s game showed how much we missed him, as Daniel Stratford was thrown to the lions. Russell’s drive and passion might have been the difference between winning comfortably, or allowing the lead to slip. No other team news available, which means Terry Butcher has again another fully fit squad to choose from. Morton are missing 2 players, Kevin McKinley and Jim McAlister. Defender McKinley has a knee injury while McAlister is out with a foot problem. On the plus side for Morton, the performance of loan striker David Witeveen at the weekend will have raised the Greenock sides hopes of retaining their first division status. He bagged an excellent hat-trick in the high scoring draw with Queen of the South GingerJaggie’s prediction Well Saturday was a nail biting game and was very exciting but I don’t want to see that again. Tonight I think will be the opposite from the weekend where it will be tight and if we can win by a single goal then it would be a brilliant result. After the turgid last encounter at TCS where we struggled to overcome a defensive Morton, the win was described by some as ugly. Another ugly win will do for me. Teams have struggled here like Queens at the weekend and Dundee only won 1-0 here so it won’t be easy but I’m going for a 1-0 ICT victory and to go 7 points clear. Mon the Caley Jags.

Inverness CT 4-3 Raith Rovers - Report

Foran's dramatic overhead wins the points

If ICT are crowned champions on May 1st, Richie Foran's 93rd minute strike may have a lot to do with it. Under extreme pressure to win our games to win the title we shipped three goals today but Foran spared our blushes with a last gasp injury time winner.
GRANTY 24's REPORT
It’s one step closer to the title as we managed to edge a hard fought encounter against Raith with a final score of 4-3 and a fourth league victory of the season against the Kirkcaldy side. ICT had the better of the opening ten minutes, despite neither side threatening, Ross Tokely watched his ambitious effort fly wide of the goal after just five minutes. However it was John McGlynn’s side who grabbed the initiative with twelve minutes on the clock, a darting run from Jamie Mole up the right flank led to a low cross where Iain Williamson was lurking to turn the ball in to the net, beating Ryan Esson at his near post. It was ICT who continued to push for goals, Jonny Hayes’ in-swinging free-kick was nodded over by David Proctor and Hayes himself saw his curling shot well held by David McGurn in the Raith goal. The pressure paid off 15 minutes before the interval; Hayes broke up the wing again and played an inch perfect ball into Adam Rooney, who did well to keep the ball in play before squaring back to Richie Foran who slammed in the equalizer. Our goal difference isn’t just far superior to everyone else’s because we stopped attacking, and that’s exactly what we did, we kept pressing and three minutes before the break we got our reward, a nicely slid pass from Foran found Rooney who burst past the defence to slam home his eighteenth league goal for this campaign.
HALF TIME ICT 2-1 RAITH ROVERS
There was a slow start to the second half from both sides but we managed to pick up where we left off, a bizarre goal on 57 minutes, a deep high ball from Rooney landed kindly at the feet of Eric Odhiambo who, despite looking about five yards offside, rounded McGurn and calmly rolled the ball into the net. We still continued to press Rovers and Rooney nearly managed to grab his second of the game, a neat low cross from Hayes was controlled brilliantly by Rooney but his shot flew wide of the target. Stupidly, we let Rovers back into the game just past the hour mark, a high swinging free kick from Allan Walker found the beast that is Gregory Tade unmarked, he took the gift and Rovers, suddenly had a chance to salvage something out of the game. And guess what... Raith equalized just eight minutes later, Tade flew past two or three challenges before smartly putting Jamie Mole one-on-one with Esson, Mole dispatched with ease, knocking the ball through the legs of Esson to level things up once again. Stephen Simmons saw red two minutes from time, a second bookable offence being given for a rough challenge on Hayes, his second or third of the game on our nippy winger We continued to push in search of a winner and Hayes nearly got one for himself, a good run up the left wing from Foran and his neat cut-back found substitute Danni Sanchez but the Spaniard couldn’t turn the ball goalwards, but the loose ball fell to Hayes but, reluctant to use his right foot, his shot was saved. FINALLY!! The goal that wins the game, four minutes into stoppage time, a deep cross from Stuart Golabek seemed to bob around the penalty area for what seemed like an age, Bulvitis and Rooney having stabs at the ball before Richie Foran pops up with an exquisite overhead kick which flew past McGurn into the bottom corner to send the fans, players and the whole club home happy.

GINGER JAGGY's REPORT
Today was not a day for the faint hearted as we consolidated our lead at the top of the league, just, in the most dramatic of circumstances. Before kick off Caley Thistle were 4 points clear of Dundee after our terrific victory over Ross County in midweek. Today the supporters turned up in expectation against a Raith side that is struggling in the league but looking forward to a cup semi at Hampden next week. Daniel Stratford replaced the suspended Russell Duncan, this being the only enforced change from the midweek team. We made the worst possible start, as on 12 minutes our defence fell asleep as on loan striker Jamie Mole found some room on the right flank and was allowed to cut the ball into our area to find the unmarked Iain Williamson who had made a run to the near post. He tapped in past Esson and gave Raith and our title challengers a boost. Caley Thistle continued to look nervy in defence as Raith came forward on the break. But we had our chances with Hayes and Foran looking dangerous on the wings. Hayes had a couple of shots on goal but we still could not find the equaliser. Could it be that it wouldn’t be our day. But relief hit us all as Hayes had one of those great runs unsettling the full back to put Adam Rooney through down the right channel and he cut the ball back to allow Foran to coolly finish and level the game up. We almost took the lead immediately after getting level when an almost carbon copy of a free kick from Tuesday was deflected wide from the boot of the impressive Foran. We then took the lead when Foran played Rooney in down the left channel and our top scorer finished coolly with the attention of 2 defenders and the goalkeeper. We had taken the lead as half time beckoned and every fan suddenly felt confident unknowing of the drama in store.
HT 2-1
The second half couldn’t have started any better. The warning signs for Raith where there when Tokely headed over from a corner. That was the warning and we increased our lead when the ball was knocked over the top for Odhiambo to take it over the Raith keeper and to walk the ball into the net. The crowd got a sense of relief at the cushion even though Raith fans will feel hard done by the fact that Odhiambo was allegedly miles offside when he received the ball. The next minute and we almost had 4 when Hayes again tormented the Raith defence and cut the ball across and it only just evaded Odhiambo and the onrushing Foran at the back post. The game was in the bag and the question at that point will be how many will Caley Thistle win by? But then the mayhem started. First Raith forced a free kick just outside the box and the decent cross was met by a glancing header from Gregory Tade. Suddenly the atmosphere changed, as all our good work in recent weeks could have been undone. Were we about to let Dundee capitalise with the knowledge of them being 3-0 up at Dens against Ayr. Raith sensed they could take something from the game as they pushed us back for what would be a deserved equaliser. And to the horror of the home fans Raith did the unthinkable and equalised with 15 minutes to go. The very powerful and impressive Tade ran through our defence and set up Mole to convert past Esson and suddenly give rekindled hope to our title rivals. In the 57th minute we were 3-1 up at home against a team struggling in the league and with a golden opportunity to make it 4. But in the 75 it was 3-3 and the turnaround was remarkable. The final fifteen was anyone’s game as both teams pushed for a winner and 3 valuable points which would have repercussions at either end of the table. Caley Thistle continued to press but the atmosphere was tense as we all sensed that Raith could snatch something on the break. In the 88th minute we looked to have gained the upper hand when Raiths midfielder Stephen Simmons was sent off for a second yellow with a rather cynical scything down of the sprinting Jonny Hayes. In the early minutes of stoppage time we looked to have taken advantage when Dani Sanchez on for Odhiambo took too long to steady himself, and with the goal gaping saw his shot blocked. The ball then fell to Hayes at the back post who also tried to take a touch to much and saw his effort blocked. Then Raith felt hard done by again as Mole held up the ball against Munro, and turned the big central defender and was away but was taken down on the half way line by our captain. To the amazement of the most people in the stadium the referee brandished a yellow even though he was the last man and could probably warrant a red. The game looked to have finished with Raith on the attack but we mounted one last spell of pressure. In the dying seconds of stoppage time a Stuart Golabek cross was met by Foran on the volley as the ball nestled into the bottom corner. This sparked wild celebration as the players ran over to the dugout to celebrate what could be a crucial goal with our manager.
The game was a great one, but like many other Caley Thistle fans I will not like to see another game like that or my heart will just give in. It wasn’t a great performance but we really should have had the game done and dusted at 3-1. We got a bit complacent and allowed a decent Raith side back in it. But well done to the boys to show the grit and determination to grab a late winner which could be crucial to our promotion hopes. One thing that Butcher now knows for sure, there’s only one Russell Duncan. His passion was sorely missed this weekend and he will no doubt be restored to the team for this week’s next instalment at Cappielow.
