Airdrie brushed aside

Inverness Caledonian Thistle moved to within a point of league leaders Dundee tonight after an emphatic 4-0 victory over relegation candidates Airdrie Utd.
Dundee could only manage a point against QOS despite having a man advantage for 74 of the 90 minutes.
Its +4 to our goal difference as we tore apart Airdrie this evening with a final score of 4-0, although as the stats suggest, it could have been at least six or seven and with Dundee being held to a 1-1 draw with QoS at Dens we are now one point off of the top of the league.
We're coming to get you!

We showed that we were determined not to repeat our boring 0-0 draw with County on Saturday when Richie Foran threaded the ball through to Rooney but the red-hot striker couldn’t find a way past Robertson in the Airdrie goal. He did though. Just two minutes later Jonny Hayes whipped in a low cross that Foran helped towards goal with an acrobatic overhead kick, ex-ICT man Tom Parrat failed to clear off the line leaving Rooney to bundle over the line for possibly the worst goal you will ever see! Spaniard Danni Sanchez could and should have doubled our lead midway through the first half some good play from David Proctor who eventually nodded through to Sanchez who, unmarked, somehow managed to clip the outside of the far post as it rolled out for a goal kick, the first of a host of chances squandered by him during the game. We can always rely on our Irish trio to grab us the goals and it was Foran who got it, Hayes picked up in the centre circle before driving forward twenty yards, when the defender came to him he neatly played in to Russell Duncan who slid in Foran to slam home his eighth league goal of the season past the despairing Robertson.
HALF TIME: ICT 2-0 AIRDRIE UTD
The first attack of the second half brought a third goal to cheer about, a corner from Hayes was swung into the six yard box where captain Grant Munro Grant hit a controlled volley with the outside of his left foot after the ball bounced high across the penalty box and was missed by the Airdrie defenders. The second chance for Sanchez came six minutes after the third goal, some great link up play between Rooney and Hayes on the right ended in a Rooney cross that found an unmarked Sanchez who promptly... missed from five yards.
One more from him? Okay. Ross Tokely played a magnificent ball down the line to Foran who drilled a low, powerful cross into the six yard box and quite unbelievably, Sanchez managed to strike the bar.
Outstanding. The only word for the save made by Robertson on 62 minutes. A similar structure to the third goal, a corner from Hayes found Munro who boomed his header towards the top corner only for Robertson to emulate Mikey Fraser’s save against Celtic a few years ago. The ball came back out to Duncan who beautifully slid in Rooney but he could only get a slight touch on the ball as Robertson gathered the ball with ease. With 20minutes to play ICT broke extremely quickly, Sanchez bombing up the left flank, ignoring Rooney who was screaming for the ball to be squared, before eventually squaring, finding Hayes, but he just couldn’t find his feet and the shot was blocked on the line. Hayes rounded off an impressive team performance with seven minutes to play, a good pass from Duncan again found Hayes who cut inside before curling towards goal, landing in the bottom corner for, like Foran, his eighth league goal of the season.
Morton match winner Nick Ross made an appearance from the bench and he had the chance to make it five for ICT, an incisive break, a long ball from sub Robert Eagle into Ross, but he just couldn’t slot past Robertson.
FULL TIME: ICT 4-0 AIRDRIE UTD
All in all, it was an impressive performance from our lads making it thirteen unbeaten and lifting our goal difference to +21, by far the best in the league. Promotion has gone from looking impossible just a few weeks ago and now, we feel we can beat anyone.

Inverness CT -V- Airdrie Utd - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
On paper, the Diamonds should be an easy 3 points. Sitting bottom of the league, 11 points behind their nearest rivals, and only 1 win away from home all season.
However, before thinking this is points in the bag, lets just remember what they did at the weekend. Yes, thats right they stuffed league leaders Dundee 3-0 and got Jocky Scott the sack. We underestimate them at our peril.
Diamonds are forever could be the latest song to echo round the Caledonian Stadium after last weekends results when Airdrie United were the straw that broke the camel's back.
Jocky Scott was given his jotters after his still table topping side were hammered 3-0 by bottom dogs Airdrie, a result which has cast doubts over the Dee’s ability to remain at the races. The Dundee management regime has acted quickly though and have appointed the men that they expect to succeed, where Jocky Scott was rapidly failing. Only nine points out of a possible twenty-four have been accrued since they drew with Inverness on Boxing Day and this has seen them blow a twelve point lead over ICT. Gordon Chisholm and Billy Dodds are seen as the saviours to get Dundee to crawl over the finishing line, and although they are still three points ahead of Inverness, they could have a nerve wracking final day winner takes all event in the Highland capital on May day. But before then, plenty of tough games for all the contenders and tonight sees Inverness take on Jocky’s executioners, Airdrie United. With Dundee playing hosts to Chisholms old charges in a televised encounter for Alba TV it could be another interesting twist in this seasons first division title race. Also making an even later bid for glory are Dunfermline who have made a run on the blind side and are now serious contenders, with a victory over Partick tonight likely to see the Firhill men ease out of contention, while keeping the Pars hot on our heels. Raith will be looking to keep Morton well away from them in the other game. Our good neighbours from over the bridge are on Scottish Cup duty against the City slickers from Edinburgh, Hibernian. How long can County keep drawing on all there reserves of energy is the burning question, but it has been so far so good for the Dingwall men and good luck to them for the cup game. Recent form has seen ICT now unbeaten in twelve league games. Our most current games have however not produced the results expected from a side chasing for the SPL glory. A high scoring home draw against form boys Ayr United was not received well by the ICT faithful, and throwing away a two goal lead at Dens Park was unfortunate. The last two games saw an uninspiring single goal victory over a defensive Morton and a tough derby day away to County. Airdrie look set to drop down a division despite thumping Dundee but indifferent results have seen them rooted to the bottom as Ayr and Morton battle to avoid the play off spot. But they have achieved a few things that ICT would have liked to have done. They have defeated Dundee at home and away. They have scored four goals at Dingwall. On the down side and some things we would not like to have had, were four and five goal losses at County, Partick and Morton. It is this inconsistency that will see them relegated. Manager Terry Butcher expects the same problems tonight that Morton threw up and with the knowledge that Airdrie have taken seven points from Dundee, then they have to be given the respect that their open play deserves, although defensively they can be caught out. Squads for tonight Inverness may have doubts over one or two players after a bruising encounter with Dingwall. Dani Sanchez was nursing a knock from a previous game but came on late in the derby. Stuart Golabek took a sore one and will be having treatment but is expected to be fit. Golly and Duncan have now been pushed over the bookings threshold and ICT are waiting to see when their bans kick in. Russell should in fact miss the Raith game. Some players may be rested for tactical reasons but the one big, really big bonus is that fiery Irishman Richie Foran will be back after missing the last two games and he will surely go straight into the starting eleven for this one. Eric Odhiambo scored seconds after coming on when Airdrie last visited but I wonder if he has done enough to merit a start. A better option would be the return of the Eagle who played well when he came on as a second half substitute against the County. Bulvitis seems to have incurred the wrath of Mr Butcher as he was removed at half time in the last game and was benched since the draw at Dens. Russell Duncan is a must after his display at Dingwall, he was everywhere and has never played better. Cox beside him is a growing pairing and well worth persevering with. The first eleven may look something like this
Esson Proctor Tokely Grantie Golly Duncan Cox Hayes Sanchez Foran Rooney Bench warmers…….Eric, McBain, Bully, Stratford, Allison Airdrie news Kenny Black will have to make do without Frankie Lagana who is suspended, although ex-Inverness squad player Tom Parratt will be ready for action having been an unused sub against the Dee. The team that nailed Dundee Robertson, Storey, Smyth, Robert Donnelly, Lovering, Trouten (Baird 77), McLaughlin (McDonald 88), McCann, Waddell, O'Carroll (Keegan 84), Gemmill. Subs Not Used: Hollis, Parratt. Tm4tj prediction With almost the full length of the table, thirty points and a massive goal difference swing of thirty-eight separating these two sides, one would expect the home side to win this one comfortably. However, we struggled badly at Airdrie this season already being fortunate to come away with a point, and took forever to hit the decisive second goal in the return fixture here. Another uninspiring single goal victory probably flattered us a little in the third meeting, and with the Diamonds on a high after turning over Dundee this might be tougher than one would have liked. Still, home advantage, midweek trek for the visitors and Richie Foran raring to go I expect Inverness to edge closer to achieving their goal of bouncing back in one season, a feat that looked a distant dream around November. A repeat of the 2-0 score line will do nicely and if Dundee slip up on Chis & Doddsy’s debut, then we could top the league on goal difference for the first time this season. So, that is my prediction, well the 2-0 part of it anyway, the rest can take care of itself. It just goes to show that great minds think alike, or is it fools seldom differ….. Gingerjaggy’s prediction After a pretty poor performance at Dingwall on Saturday we will be hoping for a better performance against Airdrie at home. But if it came to it I would take the same sort of ugly win like against Morton in our last home match just as long as we pick up 3 points. They will be buzzing after a great win over Dundee and they will be up for it but I am looking at a comfortable home win 2-0 Ha ha, 2-0 it is then, cheers jaggy, mon the Caley.

Ross County 0-0 Inverness CT - Report

Derby Draw as gap closes

It was Derby Day in the Highlands and County and Caley Thistle fought out a 0-0 draw. It was all County in the first half and they could have scored several times. ICT made more of a game of it in the second half but no-one could break the deadlock.
However, both teams could smile a little as leaders Dundee went down 3-0 to Airdrie at New Broomfield.
It's getting tight at the top now as the Dundee Juggernaut is running out of petrol and the Caley Jags move to within three points of the Dee.

20th March 2010 Victoria Park, Dingwall ROSS COUNTY 0 - Team: McGovern, Miller, Morrison58, Scott, Boyd, Keddie, Gardyne (Di Giacamo 71), Lawson,
Barrowman (Craig 89), Brittain, Vigurs (Wood 84)
Subs: Malin, Kettlewell
INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE 0 - Team: Esson, Tokely52, Bulvitus (Eagle 46), Munro, Golabek71, Proctor, Cox, Odhiambo (Sanchez 82),
Duncan04, Rooney, Hayes.
Subs: Allison, Ross, Stratford
Referee Mike Tumilty Attendance 5928 Ultimately, a draw was a good result for both sides in Dingwall after Dundee's shock defeat at basement club Airdrie.
It was a close encounter with few clear cut chances for either side, and with other results working in our favour, apart from the Pars, both sides will be satisfied with a draw.
The first half was a very tight affair with little goalmouth action. It was County who nearly struck first after 20 minutes when ex Inverness striker Andy Barrowman put wide a decent chance from close range after a mistake in the Caley Thistle midfield. After that County dominated without creating a clear cut chance, although a free header went closer than Esson would have liked. He also palmed a vicious shot over as County pressed for the opener, while Inverness resorted to the long ball which failed miserably and made it a very poor half for the travelling spectators to watch. County keeper Michael McGovern didn't have to make save in a pretty poor first half.
Half Time: 0-0
Bulvitis stayed in the dressing room at half time with Robert Eagle being introduced to the fray. The second half was a better affair with Inverness looking far more dangerous playing the ball on the ground. Half chances were being created until around 20 minutes to play when half time substitute Robert Eagle cannoned a shot off the post. The ball was played in from Jonny Hayes who found Eagle at the back post and his sweetly struck shot from a tight angle hit the base of the post with the rebound just evading Adam Rooney to the anguish of the travelling support. As the game drew to a close it was the home side who pressed more looking for what would surely be a winner, they almost got it. County, piling players forward, whipped in a brilliant cross only for Di Giacamo to blaze high into the jail end when he should have hit the target. Some great last ditch defending in front of the Jail Enders ensured that the game finished goalless.
Full Time: 0-0
Overall it wasn't a great spectacle, it was a typical derby atmosphere and with the way other results went the draw will please both teams with the final part of the drama to be played on the 30th when County visit Inverness for the final derby of the season.
So, a point apiece was just about right, and with Dundee being humiliated by the Diamond's it wasn't such a bad day after all, and it was another good day at the office for Russelldinho as he showed the rest how a Derby Day should be handled despite an early booking.

Ross County -V- Inverness CT - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
On Saturday we will make the short trip over the bridge to Dingwall for the third highland derby of the season. But local rivalry will not be the main concern as both teams still have aspirations of promotion to the SPL Ross County v ICT On Saturday we will make the short trip over the bridge to Dingwall for the third highland derby of the season. But local rivalry will not be the main concern as both teams still have aspirations of promotion to the SPL which makes this derby one of the most important ones to date. Victoria Park will be bursting at the seams as the chasing pack hunt down pacemakers Dundee. Caley Thistle will be hoping to take back all three points and get one over our rivals for the first time in the league this season. A 3-1 home defeat and 2-1 away defeat has given the bragging rights to County so far this season. But after an eleven game unbeaten run which has seen us pick up big results against Queens and Partick, Terry Butcher will be hoping that Caley can break their league duck against County at Victoria park and keep us firmly in the promotion hunt. As for County a creditable 2-2 draw at Easter road against Hibernian in the Scottish Cup quarter finals has given them oodles of confidence, and they will hope to get back to winning ways after a 2-1 defeat to Raith in Kirkcaldy almost two weeks ago. With the possibility of former ICT striker Andy Barrowman lining up against us since his return to Dingwall after a less than prolific sentence at Inverness, it will make it the most crucial, highly charged derby in recent years. The stakes could be no higher! Team news Caley Thistle have a doubt on Dani Sanchez who picked up a knock during our Inverness Cup triumph on Monday against Clach. Richie Foran also serves his final game of his 2 match ban and will be watching from the stand. Young Nick Ross deputised last week and proved to be the match winner with the all important goal. Will Butcher go with him again this week or will he favour a bit more experience, with Roy McBain and Robert Eagle likely to help out if Sanchez does not make it. Ross County have only one absentee, Steven Watt, who is out with a hamstring injury but apart from that Derek Adams has no other worries Gingerjaggy’s prediction This game should turn out to be a cracker and I have a sneaky feeling that Caley will go home triumphant after a great run in the league. With the added incentive of Dundee choking their way to the title everybody thought they would stroll to, along with Ross County playing Hibs in midweek and the lucrative tie against Celtic taking their eye off the ball, I feel Caley Thistle will win. So I am going for a 2-1 reverse of the result in November.

Inverness CT 1-0 Morton - Report

Nick'd it!

Nick Ross, starting in place of the suspended Richie Foran scored his first goal for Caley Thistle in a scrappy match where neither keeper had much to do.
The points were won midway through the second half after Adam Rooney took the initial shot but it was parried and Nick was there to tap it in from inches. It may have been an ugly win, but it was a win !!!
Regardless, it was a vital win in the quest to catch League leaders Dundee.

Worst game ever might spring into people’s minds when ICT’s 1-0 win over Morton is mentioned. I have to say that the first half was the most boring half of football in history with the only action in the half was two shots off target from Lee Cox and Adam Rooney and a corner from Morton that nearly landed in the net. Nevertheless, the win was crucial in our bid to regain our SPL status as it brings us within three points of leaders Dundee and puts us three points ahead of local rivals Ross County, although Dundee have one and County, 2 games in hand over us.
The same line up that defeated Queen of the South 3-1 in midweek was fielded, apart from the suspended Richie Foran, who was replaced by youngster Nick Ross, a decision that proved a key decision by gaffer Terry Butcher at the final whistle.
The woeful first half had few high points and Lee Cox’s chance that he fired over was perhaps the best chance of the first half. Jonny Hayes began the move, robbing Kevin McKinlay, before sliding in for on-form Adam Rooney but his first touch took the ball away from him so he had to cut it back for Lee Cox, however, ex-Leicester man pinged his shot well over. A minute later ICT were on the break again, a long ball by veteran Stuart Golabek was held up in the wind leaving Rooney to try to lob Kevin Cuthbert in the Morton goal but the ball just dropped wide of the goal. The best “chance” for Morton came just a minute before half time a corner from Jim McAllister swirled in the wind before landing just wide of the ICT goal.
Half Time: ICT 0-0 Morton
It took an hour on the clock before the first chance of the second half came about. A curling shot from Jonny Hayes just went wide of the target. A corner from Hayes was headed over by Grant Munro just two minutes later. But finally, with twenty minutes to go, the first shot on target. A smashing through ball from Russell Duncan towards Rooney was ran onto well by the Irish striker, his low shot was parried by Cuthbert, but only as far as Nick Ross who calmly rolled in his first senior goal for ICT.
The goal finally gave Inverness some urgency in their play as they attempted to wrap up their victory and Eric Odhiambo was the instigator of a move that nearly lead to a goal, the attacking midfielder did well to round Cuthbert and cut the ball back to Duncan who could only watch as his shot was blazed over the bar.
The only Morton chance of the second half came with only four minutes to play. A long hit from Peter Weatherson was deflected by David Proctor and it was well saved by Ryan Esson to end a painful game to watch for both fans.
Full Time: ICT 1-0 Morton

Inverness CT -V- Morton - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
With things hotting up at both ends of the table, ICT host relegation threatened Morton as points become more precious for both teams.
Morton have been dragged back into the dogfight for the relegation play off spot as Ayr United continue their mini revival. With things hotting up at both ends of the table, ICT host relegation threatened Morton as points become more precious for both teams. Morton have been dragged back into the dogfight for the relegation play off spot as Ayr United continue their mini revival.
With Inverness producing a stirring performance to overcome a stubborn Queen of the South in midweek, well Adam Rooney did, and Morton sliding downwards as form team Ayr scramble upwards, this could prove to be a difficult task for the home side. Morton know how dangerous the Inverness forward line can be, having lost seven goals already this season in the league, with only one goal hitting the Inverness net. Complacency however, is not something that Terry Butcher will encourage. He has been lavish in his praise of top scorer Adam Rooney but has also acknowledged the "real determination" shown by the rest of the team.
The weather has made last month look like a footballers winter holiday with neither team fulfilling their scheduled fixtures. This makes it difficult to compare the recent form, but as far as the Teuchters are concerned, (thats us) we are on an unbeaten league run that stretches for ten games, with five wins and five draws. Mortons last four games span six weeks, but despite beating Raith and Queens, they succumbed to Pars and close rivals Ayr United. Squads for this weekend Inverness chief Terence Butcher has lost the services of the workhorse that is Richie Foran. The fiery Irishman has been relieved of his duties by the SFL judiciary system. He is serving a two match ban which means he will also sit out the derby match next weekend. Other than that, Butcher has an almost full squad to choose from, with long term absentee Jamie Duff in recuperation after surgery. What does this mean I hear you say. It probably means that the team that played against Queens will play against the Ton with the exception of Foran, who will likely be replaced by the little dictator, Dani Sanchez. The other talking point will surely be whether Nauris Bulvitis comes back in at centre back or will Tokely be restored to his more natural right back berth thus relegating David Proctor to the bench. With Proc looking either rusty or nervous in midweek, my bet is for this line up.
Esson Tokely Bulvitis Munro Golabek Duncan Cox Hayes Sanchez Odhiambo Rooney Morton charge hands have also to make do without an important player. Captain Stuart Greacen was sent off last week and misses this game. David McGregor looks the likeliest replacement. With information regarding the teams restricted to MI5 and Interpol this is the best I can muster, Mortons last line up was Morton: Stewart, McGuffie, Reid (Graham 73), Shimmin, Greacen, Tidser, Jenkins (Finlayson 64), Masterton, Weatherson (MacGregor 85), Simmons, McAlister. Subs Not Used: Cuthbert, Paartalu. tm4tj prediction I am certainly on a roll, (spelled it correctly this week) two out of two, and I'm tempted to go for the hat-trick now. Richie Foran will be missed but so will Morton's captain Greacen. I have the feeling that ICT will cope better than Morton will and another comfortable win should be on the cards. I don't doubt that the fans will be put through the wringer once more, but if you are an ICT fan you come to expect that, nothing is done the easy way.
