Inverness CT 3-3 Ayr Utd - Report

Late penalty earns point

It took another last gasp Adam Rooney penalty for ICT to snatch a deserved point against Ayr United at the Caledonian Stadium this afternoon.
Once again, bad defending and not taking chances at the other end cost crucial points that would have taken us above Ross County into 2nd place. It took another last gasp Adam Rooney penalty for ICT to snatch a deserved point against Ayr United at the Caledonian Stadium this afternoon.
Yet again, it was another case of bad defending and not taking our chances at the other end that cost us a crucial three points, points that would have taken us above Ross County into second place.

It was the home side that showed their signal of intent right from the off and could have taken the lead if Irish striker Adam Rooney had connected better from Jonny Hayes’ knock down instead, his sliced effort rolled into the arms of Stephen Grindlay in the visitors goal. But, it was Ayr that took the lead, a soft free kick, conceded by Rooney was curled in by Chris Mitchell and a hapless Ryan Esson could only watch as his failed attempt at a punch clear was knocked down by Ryan McGowan into the path of Tam McManus who drilled towards goal, it his Latvian defender and spun against the post and at the feet of captain Andy Aitken who slotted into an open net. Some awful defending saw Ayr go two up just six minutes later, a wild pass from Chris Mitchell just outside the box split the ICT defence and fell to Mark Roberts who rounded the advancing Esson to roll home beyond the lunging Bulvitis who attempted to clear off of the line. ICT immediately tried to pull back and a whipped Hayes free kick was just knocked wide by fellow Irishman Richie Foran. Just three minutes afterwards; Hayes was on the prowl down the right wing again and his cross was well controlled by Foran who laid the ball back to Russell Duncan to strike from 25 yards but his bullet was well saved by Grindlay.
The goal back did come just one minute before half time; Ayr never got the ball out of their own half and loyal right-back Ross Tokely bent in a cracking cross which evaded everybody in the penalty area apart from Richie Foran who knocked into the net for 2-1.
HALF TIME: 1-2
ICT flew out in the second half and it was nearly an own goal that saw Terry Butcher’s side level. Another fantastic cross from Tokely was knocked towards goal by Aitken only for Grindlay to keep the ball out, and the referee judged it to have not crossed the line. ICT seemed to get closer and closer to that equalizer and when one of ICT’s thirteen corners found its way to Foran at the back post, they looked destined to get it. It was another whipped ball from Hayes to the near post where Rooney flicked onto Foran who nodded against the post, much to the despair of the ICT faithful. The goal finally came in the 64th minute, some smooth passing from ICT eventually found his way to the workhorse that is Jonny Hayes who curled home exquisitely past Grindlay for his sixth league goal of the season. But.... just a few minutes after, there was another setback from ICT the persistent chasing of Tam MacManus was put to good use, he raced after a long ball from the defence before rifling past Ryan Esson to give the Honest Men an undeserved lead. That meant that ICT were chasing the game again and it took a dubious penalty decision from the referee to give ICT a lifeline in the fourth minute of injury time. A lot of bottle is needed to step up for a last minute penalty, but this is the second time in a month Rooney has had to do this, and just like the Partick game a few weeks ago he blasted beyond Grindlay to gain a point on highland rivals Ross County who lost to Partick and to keep ICT’s 8 game unbeaten run intact.

ICT face another titanic battle this weekend...with the weather!  After the controversial postponement of last week's clash with Queen of the South, March is looking like a hectic month for the squad, so Caley will be keen to beat the snow, as well as Ayr United, on Saturday.
Despite the call-off last time out, Inverness come into this match in third place in the table, 10 points behind leaders Dundee but with two matches in hand.  With a trip to Dens Park to come next Saturday, Terry Butcher will be desperate for maximum points from this game, plus the midweek trip to face Morton.
As expected, Ayr have struggled following promotion from the second division and lie ninth, but picked up their first away win of the season at Dunfermline last Saturday.  Brian Reid was active in the transfer window, and his side are far stronger than when hammered 5-1 by us in October following the arrivals of loanees Ryan McGowan and Rocky Visconte (from Hearts), Daniel McKay (from Kilmarnock), and Chris Mitchell (from Falkirk), plus journeyman forward Tam McManus.
INVERNESS TEAM NEWS Jamie Duff remains a long-term casualty, but otherwise Terry Butcher has a full-strength squad to choose from.  Lee Cox and Danni Sanchez will be hopeful of being restored to the starting lineup, with Eric Odhiambo's place particularly at risk.
Likely lineup: Ryan Esson - Ross Tokely, Nauris Bulvitis, Grant Munro, Stuart Golabek - Russell Duncan, David Proctor - Jonny Hayes, Danni Sanchez, Richie Foran - Adam Rooney.  Subs: Kyle Allison, Lionel Djebi-Zadi, Lee Cox, Daniel Stratford, Eric Odhiambo
AYR TEAM NEWS Ayr could miss on-loan winger Rocky Visconte who is reported to have sustained a hamstring injury.  Veteran defender Kevin James is also out and full back Chris Mitchell is a doubt with a knee knock.  However, Billy Gibson could return to the back line after recovering from a groin problem.  In goal, Stephen Grindlay will hope to keep hold of his place, though regular first choice Craig Samson is back from suspension.
Likely lineup: Stephen Grindlay - Chris Mitchell, Andrew Aitken, Martyn Campbell, William Easton -Dean Keenan, Steve Bowey, Ryan McGowan, Junior Mendes - Tam McManus, Mark Roberts.  Subs: Craig Samson, Billy Gibson, Kenny Connolly, Alistair Woodburn, Daniel McKay
PREVIOUS MEETINGS Ayr will hope for a re-enactment of the clash between the sides back in August, a dour 0-0 draw in the Highlands.  Inverness will look to repeat their stunning 5-1 win in Ayr in October, where Richie Foran grabbed a hat-trick.  According to soccerbase.com, the sides have met 26 times in all competitions, with Inverness leading 11-6 on wins.  There have been plenty of epic clashes between the sides in the past, not least in the 2000-01 season, which included a 7-3 league win for ICT (Teasdale, Sheerin, Wyness 3, Bagan 2 for us) and a 4-3 cup win for Caley when 3-0 down at half-time (Sheerin, Mann, Xausa and Wyness on target).
PREDICTION If the game actually goes ahead, anything other than a home win would deal a severe blow to Caley's title hopes.  Despite Ayr's recent reinforcements, ICT should be too good and win 2-0.

ICT -v- QOS - Press Release

Teaser Paragraph:
A war of words seems to be brewing with Queen of the South over the postponement of Saturday's fixture against the Doonhamers.
ICT have issued a press release in response to comments attributed to QOS manager Gordon Chisolm.
A war of words seems to be brewing with Queen of the South over the postponement of Saturday's fixture against the Doonhamers. ICT have issued a press release in response to comments made.
The Statement from the club read as follows......
Caley Thistle are surprised at claims by Queen of the South manager Gordon Chisholm about any delay in switching on the undersoil heating for Saturday's postponed match. Chairman George Fraser said:"I know the heating was switched on at 9am on Friday -- more than 26 hours before the Saturday morning referee's inspection -- because I was there when it happened. "The difficulty was a deep frost of minus seven on Thursday night, deeper than the weather forecasters had predicted. It was certainly in our interests to get the game on as we felt we could boost our promotion chances with a win. The temperature was rising on Saturday morning and we asked the referee to wait an hour to 12.30 and make his final decision then. The Queen of the South manager was strongly against this. "Had they waited the hour, their long trip would not have been wasted, for the surface was improving all the time. I walked across the pitch an hour before kickoff time and it was perfect."

ICT to appeal Niculae Decision

Teaser Paragraph:
ICT have issued a press release today formally announcing the decision to appeal FIFA's ruling on the Marius Niculae transfer to the Court of Arbitration in Sport.

The Statement from the club read as follows......
GOING TO APPEAL Caley Thistle have today received the detailed minute of the FIFA meeting which last autumn ruled that former player Marius Niculae, now of Dinamo Bucharest, was due over £100,000 from the club. The arrival of the detailed findings is the trigger the club requires to lodge an appeal to the Court of Arbitration in Sport (CAS) with a hearing likely in Lausanne , Switzerland , in three to four months time. Chairman George Fraser says:"We have been in limbo since the FIFA panel announced its decision. We were unable to pursue the matter until the arrival of their written reasons for that decision.  The paperwork has now been received and our legal team have today been instructed to lodge the appeal to CAS. "Our lawyers, who drew up the standard SPL  contract agreement, certainly feel we have good grounds for appeal and we can now proceed with a view to finally resolving the matter. The CAS is a much more legally-oriented body than the FIFA panel." Niculae joined Caley Jags in summer 2007 and scored 10 goals in 37 games before in summer 2008 he refused to join a pre-season training camp in Denmark and instead flew to Bucharest where he signed for Dinamo. The issue CAS will decide is whether Niculae 'initiated' his own transfer.

Inverness CT -V- QotS - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
After a pitch inspection at 11AM, Saturday
MATCH POSTPONED

Is it too early to be calling this match a six-pointer? Both Inverness and Queen of the South will feel they can still challenge Dundee for promotion, but neither can afford to drop many points in the race for the first division title. Back on Boxing Day, this author had lost any hope of a promotion challenge, but a lot can happen in a few weeks! ICT come into Saturday’s clash lying in third in the table, one place and one point better off than QOS. However, the visitors still have a game in hand, as part of a backlog of fixtures to be dealt with after the Christmas freeze. Gordon Chisholm’s side have played only three league matches since the turn of the year, and two of those came in the past week – a 2-1 defeat at home to Morton, followed by a 3-0 drubbing of ten-man Ayr United on Tuesday night. Inverness, in contrast, are seven games unbeaten in the league, and have won their last three, making them the division’s on-form team currently.
PREVIOUS MEETINGS
Caley’s current unbeaten league run in fact started in Dumfries, with a 1-1 draw on 5th December. Jonny Hayes opened the scoring, but Bob Harris curled in a free kick to equalize in the second half. Richie Foran and Russell Duncan, along with David Lilley of the home side, were sent off. QOS came out on top in the first league match between the sides this year, winning 3-1 in the Highlands thanks to a Derek Holmes hat-trick.
According to soccerbase.com, the sides have met a total of 21 times, with Inverness ahead 9-8 on wins. When the matches are played in Inverness, ICT are on top 7-4 with no draws.
INVERNESS TEAM NEWS
Terry Butcher may be tempted to make a change or two to last weekend’s lineup, as the manner of the victory over Raith did not match the one-sided scoreline. Danni Sanchez will hope to regain his place in the side from Eric Odhiambo, whilst Lee Cox may return from injury. Jamie Duff remains out long-term, and has been joined on the treatment table by Robert Eagle.
Likely lineup: Ryan Esson – Ross Tokely, Nauris Bulvitis, Grant Munro, Stuart Golabek – David Proctor, Russell Duncan – Jonny Hayes, Eric Odhiambo, Richie Foran – Adam Rooney; subs: Kyle Allison, Lionel Djebi-Zadi, Daniel Stratford, Lee Cox, Danni Sanchez
QUEEN OF THE SOUTH TEAM NEWS
Gordon Chisholm put out an attack-minded lineup against Ayr on Tuesday, but may feel that he cannot risk the same strategy away from home – this might see forward David Weatherston drop to the bench and a recall for Stephen McKenna in midfield. Goalkeeper David Hutton returns from suspension but may only make the bench after Scott Fox kept a clean-sheet on his debut. Meanwhile, centre-half David Lilley is very doubtful after limping off in midweek, so Marc McAusland or Marvin Andrews could start in defence. Goalkeeper Ludovic Roy (hip) and defender Craig Barr (knee) are out.
Likely lineup: Scott Fox – Jordan McMillan, Marc McAusland/David Lilley, Craig Reid, Robert Harris – Paul Burns, Stephen McKenna, Neil Scally, Rocco Quinn – Derek Holmes, Stewart Kean; subs: David Hutton, Marvin Andrews, Anthony McParland, David Weatherston, Leon Knight
PREDICTION
It seems that recently Inverness have finally got the hang of grinding out results. Queen of the South will be no pushovers, but ICT should should be able to scrape a 1-0 win to keep themselves in the promotion hunt.

Raith Rovers 0-4 Inverness CT - Report

Stark lesson for Raith

After the cup game, it was back to league duty at Starks Park today and in the end it was a convincing victory for Inverness.
Goals from Adam Rooney, Jonny Hayes, Nauris Bulvitus and Daniel Stratford saw the CaleyJags run out 0-4 winners. .
from CTO: Just in, awful and woeful in the first half, much improved after the break very reminiscent of the October game. Munro and Golly worst offenders of hoofing instead of playing the simple pass. Ummmm Foran's attitude was shocking today. Now on to the positives, we are VERY well organised and well drilled. Bulvitis has improved vastly since day one, and Hayes? What a find he has been. Proctor gets my man of the match once again, he is hard-working and very good on the ball. Oh and the pie wasn't bad either. Attendance just over 1,500,just after a brilliant display in the cup poor show from them.
We have given ourselves a very good chance I believe it will come down to last game of the season. Who said the first division was dull eh?? Who knew...

Maryhill has it covered:
That was another excellent away day. The result isn't really a reflection of the whole game though. As a few people have mentioned, the first half was dreadful: although we probably had more of the ball, I don't recall us creating a single decent chance. There was far too much long ball stuff from Munro and Golabek, and we missed Sanchez' composure and eye for a clinical pass in the middle. Eric Odhiambo couldn't get into the game at all - he wasn't helped by a succession of passes that seemed to land just behind him - and Hayes was double-marked and therefore much less effective than usual. Just as in the previous game here, Raith looked well-prepared and well organised, but very lightweight. They did, however, produce the best chance of the first half with Esson making a decent save from a downward header.
We started the second half more brightly and it looked like Butcher had told the players to be more aggressive. Russell Duncan in particular had a storming second half and got all over the pitch: you can forgive him the odd misplaced pass when he drives the team forward like that. Odhiambo had a couple of decent runs on goal, but seemed a little too keen to pass when he might have been better shooting. When he was hooked for Sanchez, the game did turn, but Sanchez didn't seem to influence it directly. The opening goal looked a bit fortunate - Rooney appeared to control the ball with his hand before finishing well - but as soon as it had gone in, Raith collapsed completely. Nice turn and finish from Hayes for the second, Bulvitis forced the third over the line from fairly close in and Stratford knocked in a nice diagonal shot from a loose ball around the edge of the box for the fourth.
The positives were the obvious determination of the players to keep going for a win when nothing was coming off for them early on, the performance and influence of Russell Duncan and a very solid performance from Bulvitis, much needed after last week's mistake for the first Killie goal. Slight concerns are that despite his obvious talent, we still don't seem to know how to use Odhiambo, and that left back will be a vulnerable area for the rest of the season: Golly did far better than Lionel did last week, but his lack of pace and hasty distribution might be problematic against more effective attacking sides.
Impressive ICT support, by the way - more than 200, I'd say - and good and vocal throughout. Hope we can keep this up throughout the run-in.
We're coming for you Dundee....

Raith Rovers -V- Inverness CT - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
After last weeks break from league business, it is back to the bread and butter of winning points this weekend.
The clubs had mixed fortunes in the cup, ICT matched Killie in all departments but lost 3-0, whilst Raith were devastated by a Dons goal deep in injury time that meant their game goes to a replay.

They'll be dancing on the streets of Raith ..... After last weeks break from league business, it is back to the bread and butter of winning points this weekend. The clubs had mixed fortunes in the cup, ICT matching Killie in all departments except putting the ball in the net, which resulted in a rather flattering 3-0 win for the hosts. The ICT fans were unperturbed as they directed their angst towards the man they believed had eaten all the Killie pies, Jimmy Calderwood. A forty two minute plus injury time rendition of "Jimmy says aye to the Killie pie" accompanied by a conga or two kept the fans in good spirits despite the exit from the competition. Raith meanwhile were on the verge of causing a big cup upset as they led Aberdeen far into injury time before being pegged back. An absolutely superb Iain Williamson strike was cancelled out by Gary McDonalds suspiciously offside last gasp scrambler deep into time added on. So a replay it is but Raith had more than matched the Dons and were a great advert for the first division. They also had a healthy crowd of 7045 to soak up the afternoon’s enthralling entertainment, however, no dancing in the streets of Raith yet. This season Inverness have won both of the league games so far, winning 0-1 at Starks Park in mid October and 1-0 in Inverness before Xmas. At Starks, Inverness had to rely on a late David Proctor strike to take all three points after a see saw tussle where both sides had opportunities to impress. However, in Inverness, there was only one team in the game as the Highlanders scored an emphatic victory in all but the scoreline. This game was played out in constant mist with the extremities of the park only visible from the centre circle. Inverness had millions of chances but the only taker was Adam Rooney who scored from one of the more difficult angles of the day. Since we last met, Inverness have been on a good run although the weather has limited both clubs appearances. Out of the four league games since then, we are unbeaten with two wins and two draws. Beating Partick with a late Rooney penalty was a boost for us and the same man scored from the spot at Airdrie to secure the points. Draws with Dunfermline and Dundee were not unexpected. Rooney has scored in three of the four games during this run. Highlight for Inverness during this period was the comprehensive Cup victory over SPL form team Motherwell, conversely, the defeat at Killie was the low point. A more settled Inverness has seen the club claw their way to third at the moment, but with the snow and ice causing havoc with the fixture list the league positions will take a while to even themselves out. Raith like Inverness have been inconsistent and a clutch of home matches has seen them draw with bottom club Airdrie, lose to other relegation candidates Morton yet beat Partick Thistle. They are probably sick of seeing Airdrie as they played them twice in the Scottish Cup as well, eventually winning 3-1. The big one for Raith though was the splendid showing against Aberdeen and they will now have their sights set on the replay at Pittodrie. This seesaw season has seen Raith slip to the middle of the table although they would appear to be the last of the top clubs still hoping for the Dundee bubble to burst. Dundee's Bubble is slowly but surely leaking and all the teams will be hoping to take advantage of this. There is definitely seepage at the top and a number of clubs are still interested in promotion. Our close friends over the bridge look to be the ones leading the chase and could go three points clear by winning their games in hand. Queens have four games to play catch up, which would see them overtake Dundee by a point. We are only two games behind Dundee which would see us four points adrift of them with a possible six points still to play for between the teams. Partick seem to be the worst placed of the top seven teams, but with Dundee looking none too convincing in their last four league outings it's still all up for grabs. Airdrie and County have been to Dens and won without conceding and only a late Griffiths goal saw them overcome the Pars 3-2. They also came from behind to salvage a point at QoS, similarly coming from behind against Ayr in the cup to eventually progress 2-1, and Jocky Scott is now issuing a rallying cry to his troops. The John Bull repair kit is out at Dens, can they get the early momentum back? All is not cut and dried yet, but it is up to the chasing pack to eat into the Dee’s lead. The runaway favourites are finding it hard going and this could still go down to the wire. Weekend Squads Inverness may have to rethink after defensive lapses cost them dearly against Killie. The main culprit was the much maligned Lionel, whose schoolboy defending was paramount to the cup run ending. He was not alone as our back four showed hesitancy and were outpaced time and time again by Connor Sammon. Stuart Golabek has been injured recently and may get the nod if he has recovered sufficiently, but another strong shout is for young Graeme Shinnie to be given the chance to show his skills and undoubted pace. I wonder if Butcher will stand by his man, or will he revert to the side that ousted Well in the cup, with Tokely at left back. This would open the door for Russell Duncan to return to his favoured defensive midfield duties alongside the ever maturing Lee Cox or possibly Proctor. The front four would remain as Hayes, Sanchez, Foran, with Rooney ploughing the lone furrow. Eric Odhiambo will be knocking on the door as Danni Sanchez has been rather frugal in front of goal and took a knock into the bargain. Robert Eagle may also play a part at some stage as we prepare for LABAI............................................ life after Barrowman and Imrie. Possible ICT line up Esson Tokely Bulvitis Munro Golabek Proctor Duncan Hayes Eric Foran Rooney Sanchez, Eagle, Cox, and Lionel will surely be likliest candidates to warm the bench. Raith Rovers will have to make do without the dangerous Gregory Tadé as he is suspended, as is former Jambo, Stephen Simmons. Their deputies could well be another ex-Jambo Graham Weir and Mark Ferry, although Darren Smith could be in the mix. Javier Amaya is also ruled out through injury. Experienced defender Lawrie Ellis is a doubt after taking a knock midway through the cup game, Dougie Hill could fill in for him. Possible line up for Raith McGurn Wilson Campbell Murray Hill Williamson Ferry Walker D.Smith Russell K.Smith Tm4tj prediction I'm getting worse at this prediction lark. With only one goal separating the sides in the last two league encounters I would expect nothing less from this one. Raith will be buzzing following their cup heroics, whereas Inverness had their confidence dented by the defeat at Killie, much of this was their own doing. While we have great attacking options, our stationary defending has given us grief all season. Left back has not been our most consistent position and the Bobby Mann/Darren Dods shaped hole has never been filled in central defence. Grant Munro always seems to have his hands full when Lionel is playing and this detracts from his central role, leaving his partner Bulvitis exposed at times. You would think that a managerial team that boasts a multitude of English and Scottish international caps would be able to identify the problem areas and put in place a plan of action. Not so. Strangely enough, we seem to be better equipped up front. Without wishing to put the curse of the Irish on this game, I would look to the trio of Hayes, Foran and Rooney to dig deep and get us out of this one with three points. Raith on the other hand have threats up front with loan star Kevin Smith bang on form and Iain Williamson looking to add to their goal tally. Keeper David McGurn was their star player as he saved Raith from a drubbing in Inverness and he will be ably assisted by his experienced defence. Not always an easy place to win points, or cup games, but I will stick my neck out and go for Inverness to sneak a goal in a tight tussle and make the journey up the A9 more appealing. Willie Polland rip On a sad note, I notice that former Raith & Hearts defender Willie Polland has passed away. Willie played for Raith in the fifties & sixties and also spent six years at Tynecastle. He enjoyed Raith so much he returned in 1967 and totalled 372 appearances for them.
