Inverness CT 3-1 QotS - Report

Rooney at the treble

An Adam Rooney hat-trick, his second of the season, propels ICT to a 3-1 win over QOS
With County losing in Kirkcaldy, ICT climb to second spot 6 points behind leaders Dundee.
This was an important match, so important in fact that we have not one but two match reports from it !!!
Both Granty24 and Themann4thejob submitted match reports and as it was such an emphatic and enjoyable win we thought we would feature both instead of amalgamating the two.

It’s back to winning ways for ICT after an emphatic 3-1 win over Queen of the South at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium tonight. It took a second hat-trick of the season for Adam Rooney for the highlanders to send the Queens fans back down to Dumfries disappointed. The first half was dire and very little goalmouth action was shown by either side in the first half. However, ICT had a decent opportunity to take the lead with just 5 minutes on the clock when Adam Rooney barged past Jordan McMillan before lashing the ball wide of the target when he should have laid off one of his players advancing into the box. The quick break from the Queens had ICT sweating when David Weatherston caught the ICT defence napping and played a lovely through ball to Stewart Kean, but the ex- St. Mirren man could only watch as his effort was expertly saved by Ryan Esson. As the first half droned on, ICT had the better chances and when Jonny Hayes curled in a free kick, Lee Cox thought he had turned the ball into the net but David Hutton was equal to the effort and held onto the ball easily. The breakthrough did come three minutes before half time, a possession goal from the home side which ended in a cracking, deep, Lee Cox cross that Richie Foran nodded back across the six yard box where the poacher that is Adam Rooney was waiting to dispatch his thirteenth league goal of the campaign. Half Time: ICT 1 – 0 Queen of the South The second half was much better from both sides and again it was ICT who were looking more likely to snatch some goals and the second goal nearly arrived when Richie Foran used his pace down the left flank and cut the ball back to Eric Odhiambo who just couldn’t turn the ball into the net, then Rooney had a pop, but neither could beat Hutton as the ball trickled out for an ICT corner. It was route one stuff from ICT for Rooney’s second goal on 52 minutes, a long ball from Grant Munro was expertly flicked on by Hayes to Rooney who stuck a nicely struck half volley past the despairing Hutton. At this point, I would imagine that Saturday’s game with Dundee and how we managed to lose a two goal lead was crossing everybody’s mind. It was high heart rate time for everyone at the stadium when referee Crawford Allan pointed to the spot for a soft Queens penalty. David Weatherston went down after tangling with captain Grant Munro inside the box. Much to the anger of two thirds of the stadium queens had an opportunity to pull a goal back. Derek Holmes stepped up and rolled the ball past Esson fourth goal against the highland side this season. Unlike Saturday’s game ICT continued to try to get the decisive third goal and Lee Cox nearly grabbed it when Hayes’ deep cross was hooked back towards goal by Cox but the ball just dropped over Hutton’s goal. The chance for a third and for the hat-trick arrived with 15 minutes to play, another deep cross from Hayes looked to be landing onto the head of Foran but in came Neil Scally with a tug on Foran, leaving Crawford Allan to point to the spot for the second time in the game. Who else but Adam Rooney would have stepped up for this penalty, and he smashed into the bottom right corner, despite Hutton going the right way. Full time: ICT 3-1 Queen of the South The result sends ICT into second place, ahead of Ross County on goal difference, and short of Dundee by six points. Hat-trick hero Adam Rooney felt that his goal record this season is mainly down to the service of the players around him, and the Ross County result had given the players and staff a huge confidence boost and he now feels that every game from now to the end of the season is the clubs most important of the season and the players won’t stop believing about their promotion dreams until it is mathematically impossible.
MATCH REPORT - Themann4thejob  [jump to Granty24 report]
This was a hard fought but deserved win tonight against a Queen of the South side embarking on a difficult run of away fixtures. Seen as a must win game after dropping four points in the last two Inverness were made to work tirelessly for the three points. David Proctor played at right back with Tokely in place of Bulvitis, possibly a ploy to conteract the menace of Holmes bulky frame. Eric kept his place with Sanchez still warming the bench. He started slowly but the more attacking we did, the more prominent he became. Jonny Hayes, despite that haircut was teasing the Queens defence and Richie Foran was doing his usual stint, some great running on the left flank. The defence looked a bit hesitant at times and Proctor almost gifted an opening with a loose ball played across the face of our box. Hesitancy between the new pairing let Queens in but the attack was snuffed out eventually. Esson came to our rescue when Queens played in Stuart Kean after we sloppily gave the ball away in the midfield. He found himself in acres of space when the ball sliced our recovering defenders open. He was on his own, eighteen yards out with only Esson to beat, but Ryan stood tall and blocked him as he tried to round him. An important save at that stage of the game. We threatened at the other end without troubling the keeper, Rooney curling just over from 20 yards. Queens almost stole a goal when a long range free kick from Harris evaded everybody in the box and a wrong footed Esson was grateful to watch the ball bounce past his right hand post. He was none too happy with the re-arranged defence for letting the ball bounce through. Hayes was probing, but the crosses were usually met with the head of big Marvin Andrews. Just before the break, Inverness took a welcome advantage when Foran met a deep cross from Cox on the left side of the goal area and knocked it back across the box where Rooney arrived on the scene and cracked it in. Half Time 1-0 We almost scored at the start of the second half but the ball was cleared off the line and scrambled clear. We were starting to look more dangerous now. Rooney scored number two when little Jonny headed onwards, and as he held off the defender he unleashed a shot from the edge of the box. It took a slight nick off the defenders challenge and beat the diving Hutton high up his right hand side. Superb diagonal runs by Rooney were threatening to realise more goals for a rampant ICT. Queens were thrown a lifeline when a needless challenge by Munro brought down Weatherston on the left edge of the box. No danger of the Queens player going anywhere but the challenge was adjudged to be unfair and Holmes sent Esson the wrong way from the resultant spot kick. A few brief flurries from Queens were repelled by our improving back line and we were constantly hitting on the break. Rooney was everywhere and Foran was backing him up brilliantly. Jonny was now taking the mick as he toyed with the opposition to chants of ole.....ole.....ole.....booo as the final pass went astray. A third goal arrived as Foran was bundled over inside the six yard box after bursting forward to meet another Lee Cox chip into the danger area. Rooney did the necessary to complete his hat-trick and a fabulous night for him. Golly took a nasty knock after he made a late tackle but he continued after treatment. The final whistle was welcomed almost as loudly as the Ross County score. It had been a good night for ICT as we moved into second place on goal difference. The race for the title is hotting up, don't go away. MoM, undoubtedly the clearest cut decision in the history of MoM awards, the man of the moment Adam Rooney. We wanted Wayne but we don't care.....................He was ably assisted by Russell Duncan and Richie Foran. Lee Cox is another having a good spell, and his two assists are no surprise as he does not often waste balls. Defence had their moments and we looked uncomfortable at times, but Esson certainly earned his corn with that block in the first quarter. Eric has some superb touches when he has the time and some of his turns were sublime. Overall, we deserved to win comfortably but made harder work of it than the fans would have liked, but 3-1 was just reward for all the hard work. Bring on Morton on Saturday.

Inverness CT -V- QOS - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Inverness will be looking to bounce back to winning ways after drawing their last two matches.
These games saw four vital points slip from their grasp after drawing at home to struggling Ayr, and blowing a two goal advantage over table toppers Dundee. Inverness will be looking to bounce back to winning ways after drawing their last two matches. These games saw four vital points slip from their grasp after drawing at home to struggling Ayr, and blowing a two goal advantage over table toppers Dundee. Terry Butcher was unhappy after the draw at Dens saw his side capitulate once more to the dark blues. It may be a psychological block now. As soon as Dundee scored their first, the writing was on the wall, and as the pressure mounted Inverness withdrew deeper and deeper inviting Dundee to have a go which is exactly what Harkins did, albeit with the aid of Nauris Bulvitis and a wicked deflection off his anatomy. So, onwards and upwards we hope. Tonight sees the visit of Queen of the South. Let's hope we see a football game this time as the late call off of the scheduled fixture caused a bit of a furore. In all honesty, the pitch seemed perfectly playable not long after the ref called off the game, but for some reason there were reluctance on behalf of some parties to proceed with the match, much to the angst of both sets of supporters. This years run in will be particularly chaotic as all teams try to fit their fixtures into what's left of the season after a brutal winter. Queens first visit this season saw Derek Holmes score a hat-trick. He started early as latecomers will testify, lashing the ball home in the first minute. Inverness then laid siege to the Queens goal and justified drawing level before half time. However in the second half Holmes completed his treble to give Queens an unlikely three points as ICT struggled to find any cohesion. In the second fixture at Palmerston, we had to settle for a draw when we looked like getting all three points. Jonny Hayes had broken the deadlock early on when he raced into the box and sent a low shot across the keeper, but in a fiery second half which saw Foran and Duncan sent off along with Doonhamers Lilley, Bob Harris scored direct from a free kick after Barry Wilson's cute fall. This tackle was the one that Foran saw red for, having earlier received a yellow for a clumsy challenge. Six yellows, three reds and a goal apiece, a good days entertainment. Queens will be keen to see Kean on the score sheet again after he scored the winner last week against Partick. Seven goals now for Kean and along with big Holmes on nine, they will pose a threat to our back four. They have been indifferent of late when the weather has allowed, beating Partick and Ayr, but losing at home to Morton. Team News Inverness boss Butcher should have an injury free squad to pick from which means any changes from the weekend will be tactical, or to be more blunt, Terry's choice after he slated their attitude and commitment for throwing away the lead again. I would expect the team will line up much as they did at Dundee. The places up for grabs could be in midfield where Proctor, Cox, Duncan, Odhiambo and Sanchez are all vying for a start. Queens boss Gordon Chisolm has Rocco Quinn and Leon Knight pushing for a start after suspensions. Willie McLaren who came on as a sub could also feature. Queens Team v Partick Hutton, McMillan, Harris, Lilley (Andrews 90), Reid, Burns, Scally, McKenna, Weatherston (McLaren 73), Holmes, Kean. Subs Not Used: Fox, Hamill, McParland. Tm4tj prediction I'm on a roll now, one in a row after Saturday's scoring draw at Dens Park. Tonight could be a difficult task to break down the visitors, something we struggle to do at times, but someone is going to get a doing from us soon. It might as well start tonight and with the hectic scheduling now underway I expect a healthy win for ICT. Former captain Stuart Golabek is "urging the fans to be patient tonight and get behind the team", so let's hear it for the Caley Thistle boys.

Cameron joins the Board

Teaser Paragraph:
ICT have issued a press release today formally announcing that former director Kenny Cameron will rejoin the board.
In his previous stint as a board member, Kenny was instrumental in the creation of ideas such as Boardroom Banter and other communication initiatives. We at CTO welcome this appointment wholeheartedly.
Kenny joins Caley Jags board Inverness businessman Kenny Cameron has accepted an invitation to join the board of Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC. Mr Cameron has been chairman of the club's Youth and Community charitable trust since its inception in 2004.
He is a partner in CK Events, the promoters of the sellout Rod Stewart concert at Tulloch Caledonian Stadium in July. Club chairman George Fraser said:"Kenny was previously a very active board member but had to stand down due to his business commitments at the time. He has a great deal to contribute and I'm very pleased he's agreed to return. "Kenny will have very much a hands-on role in our operational activities as part of a wider drive by the club to support our off-field activities, in delivering new revenue generating opportunities as well as enhancing value to existing sponsors and advertisers. "We see Kenny as having a link role between the board and supporters' organisations to further understanding and mutual development. Following the re-signing of the management team for next season, this appointment is part of a strategy of putting in place building bricks to underpin and strengthen the club's future." Mr Cameron said:"I'm pleased to be in a position to accept a directorship based on an excellent discussion with the chairman. This club is most successful when everyone concerned pulls together and works for the common good. I will do what I can in that direction."

Dundee 2-2 Inverness CT - Report

F**k you Dundee you'll never win the league!

Just like the Challenge Cup Final, Caley Thistle once again squandered a 2-0 lead against the league leaders.
This time we came away from Dens with a single point instead of three we should have had.
Caley Thistle dropped to 4th place after today's 2-2 draw with leaders Dundee at Dens Park.
For a fair bit of the second half it was looking good for the visitors as they went ahead just after the 2nd half started and then further ahead 10 minutes later. However, Dundee once again showed why they are top with a comeback from Kerr and Harkins to salvage a point.

6th March 2010 Dens Park, Dundee DUNDEE 2 - Kerr (78), Harkins (85) Team: Douglas, Paton, Malone, Lauchlan, MacKenzie57, Harkins⚽85, Kerr⚽78, Shinnie (McMenamin 80),
Forsyth, Griffiths, Hutchinson (Higgins 63)
Subs: Bullock, McKeown, Klimpl
INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE 2 - Foran (47), Odhiambo (58) Team: Esson, Tokely, Bulvitus, Munro87, Golabek, Cox (Sanchez 90), Odhiambo⚽58(Proctor 79),
Duncan76, Foran⚽47, Rooney, Hayes.
Subs: Allison, McBain, Eagle
Referee C. Brown Attendance 4974     Once again Inverness failed to beat Dundee despite taking a two goal lead. After a tense first forty-five, Foran and Odhiambo scored early in the second half and it looked as though the points might be heading up the A9, but a stunning strike from Brian Kerr and a bummer of a goal off Bully’s backside ensured that the points were shared. Butcher had Proctor on the bench alongside Sanchez, with Cox and Odhiambo starting. The rest of the side remained unchanged. No place for Bob Malcolm in the Dundee ranks, with Andrew Shinnie on from the start and Klimpl warming the bench.   The game started with both sides probing and looking for an opening but the defences were on top in the early exchanges. The first talking point was when Dundee looked to have taken advantage of a linesman’s error and as Tokely claimed for the throw in, Dundee sped towards the Inverness box where Esson had to palm over a snap shot from goalden boy Leigh Griffiths after he skipped inside Munro. Inverness eased their way into contention and Rooney fired wide after a Foran knock down. McKenzie made a goal saving block as Rooney once more looked to open the scoring. Another defensive block by the Dens men almost resulted in an own goal as the ball flashed perilously close to big Rab’s left hand woodwork. The closest call of the first half came when the improving Odhiambo broke free on the left, his weighted cross to the back post was met by Rooney driving deep into the box, but unfortunately for him the ball had just past the post and was now too close to the goal line. All he could do was knock the ball back across the face of the goal to start a bit of pinball. The first half finished with Inverness looking much more dangerous than their hosts and a tad unlucky not to be ahead.   Half Time 0-0   That was soon to change though as we were quick out of the blocks after the break. Eric, who looked out of sorts in the midfield battle, had become more prominent when going forward. He turned his marker on the edge of the box and quickly fed Rooney on the right wing. Rooney placed a cross onto Foran’s napper and he nodded the ball powerfully past a sprawling Douglas. One nil to the Highlanders and Dundee were now on the ropes. A second goal was imminent and it arrived courtesy of Eric. He was in the right place at the right time to tap home after great work by Foran and Rooney on the left. Two assists for man of the moment Adam Rooney.   At this point Dundee looked dead and buried. They had not managed to make Esson work so far since half time, but that was soon to change. There was only going to be one winner, or was there. Dundee were getting no change out of the Inverness rearguard when the ref took over. He penalised Lee Cox for standing his ground and when the Dee player bounced off him, he awarded a free kick. Glorious Gary Harkins stepped up and made a complete hash of it, but the ball ricocheted off the bottom of the wall and sat up nicely for Brian Kerr. He duly thrashed a spectacular volley into the heart of Ryan Esson’s net from twenty-five yards as the keeper seemed to be preparing to go right. He was caught flat footed as the ball fizzed past him. A lifeline for Dundee and you could visibly see the panic button being pushed by the ICT defence.   They threw everything at Inverness to try and get out of jail. Russell Duncan made a superb Bobby Mann like clearance from one yard out as he chested a cross down before volleying clear, much to the chagrin of the Dundee support. But Dundee were not to be denied, just as they did in the Alba Cup, they came back from the dead and snatched an unlikely point. There seemed little danger as Harkins collected the ball some thirty yards out. He drifted inside and eased past a couple of players as he does. Suddenly a gap opened up as our defence parted like the red sea. Moses then unleashed another fluffed shot which appeared to be going half way to the corner flag. As Esson made his way towards his right hand post the ball struck the unfortunate Bulvitis and re-routed itself towards the centre of the goal where it trickled over the line. Despair for Inverness and ecstasy for the Dee. Dundee had snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat.   Full Time 2-2   There endeth the scoring and the match finished all square. Inverness looked edgy after Kerr’s goal and sensed another fight back was on the cards, they were right, but credit to Dundee for not throwing in the towel when they looked down and out. Golabeck shackled Griffiths well in the first half and Tokely won his fair share against him when he switched wings. Munro and Bulvitis looked comfortable until Kerr scored out of nothing. The Irish connection once more put in a tremendous shift, although Jonny Hayes has lost some power since he changed his hair colour. The Rooney-Foran combo was working a treat and Eric came onto a game after a slow start where he struggled to control the ball and his tackling was non-existent, but when attacking he came into his own and looked decent in patches. The midfield duo of Cox and Duncan worked for me.   Plenty of effort and some great skill from Russell make him my MotM. Inverness will be disappointed at throwing away this advantage over everyone’s favourites for the title, but with a third of the season still to go there will be more opportunities to peg back the leaders. Dundee only have three home games left and eight away games, while we have seven home games and five away. Terry Butcher was livid citing “passion and desire” as something lacking from the team and was not happy with the way we lost the two goals. Jocky Scott was understandably less unhappy and agreed that “you need a bit of luck”. Well he got some today, but is the Dundee juggernaut as invincible as some would have us believe. That’s three draws against ICT this season, and the final game of the season could still be a vital one yet. Plenty of action coming up with Queens at Inverness on Tuesday night, so be prepared for a roller coaster run in from now.

Dundee v ICT Down to the six-pointers stage of the season now as Inverness visit the City of Discovery to try and claw back Dundee's lead at the top of the division. This game could be a good indicator as to where the title will end up. A win for ICT will certainly have Dundee looking over their shoulders as the Highlanders would close the gap to within a possible three points pending the results of the catch up games. A win for Dundee would all but kill off our faint hopes of a return to the SPL and a draw would result in us depending on others to put a spanner in the Dundee works. This seasons games Lets get down to business here, other results don't concern either of these teams tomorrow. Previous form will go out the window. Inverness have been on a ten game unbeaten run in the league, but they don't come much tougher than an away day at Dens Park. Both of this seasons league meetings between the clubs ended in stalemate, and both of these games were highly entertaining. The most memorable game though would be the Alba cup final where Dundee came back from a first half mauling to snatch the cup from ICT's hands in a thrilling 3-2 victory. Inverness produced a stunning first half where they tore Dundee to shreds and were unfortunate to be only two ahead at the break. Dundee however, struck early in the second half and the ICT energy drained quickly as the Dens men took over. Definitely a game of two halves but one of the best of the season. Team news Terry Butcher has reported a clean bill of health for his side. Last week saw Inverness fail to encroach on Dundee's lead with a disappointing home draw with Ayr United. Adam Rooney once more rescuing the defenders yet again with another last second penalty. Ryan Esson had a poor day last week but will retain his place in goals. Ross Tokely will surely keep his place at right back in what will be a busy day for him. Bully and Granty will be the central defenders and Golabeck looks likely to keep his place at left back. The engine room seems to be where changes could happen. Russell Duncan put in a good shift last week and should partner either Proctor or Cox in the holding midfield. The forward three will almost certainly be the sprightly and bleached Jonny Hayes on the right with Sanchez hopefully the central creator. The tireless Richie Foran will be kept wide left with current hero Adam Rooney battling on his lonesome up front. This front facing foursome gave Dundee a torrid time in the first half at McDermaid park and on their day they will be a match for any defence. Jocky Scott has added ex-Ranger & Motherwell defender Bob Malcolm to his squad and he could feature at some point tomorrow if his international clearance comes through in time. Also in line for a starting berth will be former County hit man Sean Higgins and Craig McKeown. Scott will have to do without injured pair David Cowan and Paul McHale. Key players Speed will be the key factor in this cliff hanger. For Inverness we have super sprinter Jonny Hayes, who has been moving so fast his hair has turned white. Dundee can offer their own piece of greased lightning in the shape of Leigh Griffiths, undoubtedly the classiest striker in the Scottish game today. At the other end of the spectrum, our defenders are getting slower as the season progresses and this could be where we are at our weakest. A distinct lack of pace throughout the back four has seen them struggle to cope with the leagues faster boys and only the persistence of Adam Rooney has saved their blushes on more than a couple of occasions. Adam, not known for his sprinting has fast endeared himself to the ICT following with some old fashioned spearhead striking, giving defenders plenty of harassment and popping the odd goal in to get in the frame for top scorer in the First. With Dani Sanchez behind him he could be the perfect foil for Rooney or Foran and will be eager to thread Jonny Hayes into the target area. Dani will thrive in this type of game and if he can add some goals to his clever play then he could be the man to unlock the Dee defence. tm4tj prediction I would like to stick my neck out and go for an ICT win, but my head tells me that another scoring draw is on the cards. Both teams are capable in attack and both are beatable at the back. Rab Douglas is playing well in goals for Dundee and hopefully Ryan Esson puts last weeks performance behind him. Midfield will be a crucial area of this battle and we have a couple of battlers in there with Duncan and Cox, although Harkins and Hart will be up for this. If it comes down to skill and trickery in the box then Griffiths and Hayes are your men, and for perseverance Rooney might just give us the edge. Scoring draw in an entertaining game, can't see any different to that.

Butcher, Malpas sign new contracts

Teaser Paragraph:
Terry Butcher and assistant Maurice Malpas have signed contracts to keep them at ICT until the end of season 2010-11.
The existing contracts of both men were set to expire this summer and club chairman George Fraser said:"we're extremely pleased to have reached agreement today".
PRESS RELEASE  Butcher, Malpas agree New Deals
Terry Butcher has signed a contract to keep him at Inverness Caledonian Thistle until the end of season 2010-11. His assistant Maurice Malpas has also penned a new deal to remain at Tulloch Caledonian Stadium for the same period of time. The existing contracts of both men expire this summer and club chairman George Fraser said:"We have been speaking behind the scenes to Terry and Maurice and we're extremely pleased to have reached agreement today. "We feel the timing is right rather than leaving the clock to run down on their contracts before making decisions. With their future guaranteed, they can now focus on persuading players to sign new contracts and on further strengthening the squad for next season. "We are still in the promotion race and Terry and Maurice have emerged with considerable credit this season in rebuilding the side after the financial disaster of relegation from the SPL and players departing. They had to do a difficult stabilising job and now the directors feel they have earned the opportunity to take the club forward. The continuity will benefit the club." Terry Butcher, 77 times capped by England , was appointed Caley Thistle manager on January 27, 2009, with Malpas as first team coach. The team was relegated on goal difference by a single goal in May 2009. Terry Butcher said:"I'm delighted to stay at the club next season -- though my immediate focus is on the fact that we're still very much in the hunt to win back our SPL place this season. It's satisfying that we have the backing of the board. "I'm delighted that Maurice Malpas has also agreed a contract extension as he's a fantastic person with loads of commitment who's worked extremely hard for the club. "We knew this season woudn't be easy with the circumstances the club found itself in following relegation. But we're still challenging for the title while at the same time laying down the foundations for the future. "Confirmation of my extension gives me scope now to take a close look at the whole club and plan on how best to take it forward. We have some very good young players coming through and I want to encourage and develop them as well as bringing new players in. "My wife and I immensely enjoy living in the Highlands and we've been made extremely welcome in Inverness , so it's anything but a hardship to stay in the area."
