Airdrie Utd 0-1 Inverness CT - Report

Narrow win at Excelsior

After a great cup win it was back to league business today and a trip to the Excelsior Stadium to face bottom club Airdrie United. Adam Rooney was the hero for ICT as he scored the only goal of the game from a 43rd minute penalty.
By all accounts a game where the woodwork saved Airdrie on more than one occasion. This result puts us 13 points behind leaders Dundee.
Here we come!

Mantis was on hand to summarise thus:
We hit the woodwork 3 times or was it 4. Foran had a goal chalked off from a free kick just after the penalty. The foul was for foot-up which is indirect IIRC. Winning 1-0 with a spot kick flatters Airdrie. Very young team who seldom threatened. Might easily have ended 5-0 - the only worry was Airdrie might have got a deflection or an o.g. near the end. Don't think Ryan had a serious save to make.
Ross had a very quiet 500th B)
Cox got booked first half for a shocker of a challenge. Lionel was being targeted by Airdrie. They tried it down our left every time (which wasn't that often). Lionel's booking was a bit strange. Imrie went to waste time near the corner flag and won a shy. Left it for Lionel who was coming up from halfway and the ref booked him for timewasting.

Edit: forgot to mention Rooney's shocker of a miss second half when he rounded the keeper then blazed it over.
FWIW one guy on the Airdire forum says we're the best side to visit their place this season (or did he mean this yea

A Tribute to Tokely

Teaser Paragraph:
Ross Norman Tokely is not exactly a household name in world or even UK football, but this weekend against Airdrie United he will (if selected) become the first player in ICT history to reach a milestone that will likely never be beaten.

Ross Norman Tokely is not exactly a household name in world or even UK football, but this weekend against Airdrie United he will (if selected) become the first player in ICT history to reach a milestone that will likely never be beaten. He will make his 500th appearance for the club.
This will put Rosscoe in the same bracket as only a small number of Scottish players in the modern era that have amassed all their senior appearances for a single club.
Perhaps surprisingly, one the "leaders" of the modern day figures is none other than ICT assistant manager Maurice Malpas who played an amazing 832 times for Dundee United (617x LGE,151x CUP,64x Europe). Others on the "loyalty list" include Paul McStay who clocked up 678 appearances for Celtic, and Willie Miller who took to the park 558 times for Aberdeen.
When researching this article, a few other names also sprung to mind such as Dave Narey, Roy Aitken, Jim Leighton, Alex McLeish and former ICT manager John Robertson, but all had to be excluded as they had played for more than one club. Even ICT manager Terry Butcher didnt quite make it to Rosscoe's appearance level. He clocked up 350 appearances for Ipswich between '78 and '86 and somewhere in the region of 127 for Rangers.
On a global level, single club players do still exist throughout the game - AC Milan's Paolo Maldini is a great example, having notched up over 1000 appearances for club (900+) and country (126) in a 25 year career that ended just a few months ago. In Maldini's case it is a family affair as his father Cesare Maldini notched up more than 400 apperances for the club. Real Madrid's captain, Raul is another who is over the 500 mark and closer to home, in the English Premiership, Ryan Giggs is the most obvious candidate with 800+ appearances for Manchester United from 1991 to the present day. Liverpool can boast two players high up on the loyalty list with Jamie Carragher (580+) and Steven Gerrard (480+) making over 1000 appearances between them.
We salute all those players who show loyalty to a single club, but most of all we salute our very own Ross Tokely who is already an unofficial ICT club legend
Born 08/03/79 in Aberdeen, Ross (30) was a raw 17 year old central midfielder playing for Huntly in the Highland League when he was signed by his former manager Steve Paterson on 3rd June 1996. At the time, no-one paid much attention to the signing of the youngster with attention instead focusing on the "big" names to arrive ahead of what was to be a championship winning season - Barry Wilson, Paul Cherry and Scotty McLean. However, Paterson was quoted at the time as saying "People will not have a clue who Ross Tokely is – but they soon will. He has only just turned 17 but I think he has a great future. I rate him that much it's my intention to put him straight into the first team".
Ross made his debut for the club in a cup game against Clyde at Broadwood Stadium, Cumbernauld on 3rd August 1996. Caley Thistle lost this game in extra-time and Ross didnt feature again for a while. He made his full league debut on 14th September 1996 in a 2-0 victory at Telford street over East Stirlingshire. In the early days of his career, Ross was asked to play in almost every position on the park (including in goal during a 1999 match Vs Livingston when Les Fridge was sent off [Ross kept a clean sheet]). By the time we reached the SPL in 2004 and adopted squad numbers, he had worn every shirt number except 9 ... maybe Maurice and Terry will let him wear that one for his 500th?
Ross of course was part of the historic side that defeated Celtic 3-1 at Parkhead on a certain evening in February 2000 and also scored another vital goal a couple of years later against his boyhood heroes Hearts at Tynecastle in another 3-1 win over SPL opposition. In fact, for a defender, he has not done too badly at all, netting 33 times in his 499 appearances so far.
Ross became the record appearance holder when he broke Charlie Christie's total of 314 appearances on 9th April 2005 at Rugby Park, Kilmarnock. Richard Hastings, Roy McBain and Barry Wilson all subsequently overtook Charlie's record, but Ross is still streaks ahead of them all and none are likely to surpass his achievement (especially as Roy is now the only one of the three still at ICT).

Ross didnt listen to the critics and just upped his game each time. As part of the research for this article we have had access to a few other articles written about Rosscoe over the years - but one anecdote that sticks out is from Ian Broadfoot's programme piece from Rosscoe's testimonial where he recalls the story of a Balloch teacher who set a class project on "Famous Scots".
The story goes that "pupils had to name ten famous Scots. One girl, clearly impressed by her involvement in the club's Hot Shots, put Ross Tokely third behind William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. Her father decided that this was perhaps a little over the top and persuaded her to substitute Kenny Dalglish. Dalglish for Tokely is quite a substitution! This story goes a long way to show the place Ross holds in Inverness football folklore after ten years and 362 appearances for ICT".
138 appearances later, and the legend that is Rossco is even more firmly entrenched in Inverness Football folklore and we have a feeling that this girl may even have put him higher up the list if asked now.
No review of Rosscoe's career is complete without mentioning his perceived record as a bad boy who is always getting booked, but as with many things, when you look at the facts, they paint a different story. We realise that drawing attention to this aspect of Ross' game might be seen as a bit negative but on the contrary, we have included it as we think the numbers show that despite his reputation as a big no-nonsense defender, he is in fact just a big pussycat !!! In 500 appearances, Ross has been booked a total of 85 times. That is only once every 6 games or so (5.87 to be exact) which is pretty reasonable for a man playing in his position. As for sendings off, the total might even be viewed as remarkable by some ... 7 times in 499 games so far or once every 71 games (once every 2 seasons roughly!).
We are going to stretch things a little for our next little bit of trivia, but you could also argue that he has played in every season ICT have been in existence .... Inverness was not added to the front of the Club's name until season 96/97 - the same season that Ross was signed ! Before that, ICT were only CT
One achievement however that cannot be debated however was his clean sweep of every single player and fan award at the end of our first SPL season in 2004/05. This had never been done before and he walked away with the Players' Player, Supporters' Player, Supporters' Club Player, Matchday Programme Player and CaleyThistleOnline Player of the Year trophies

So there you have it. Ross Tokely, club stalwart, ICT legend, and proof that heart, determination and footballing skill can take you all the way from the Highland League to the Premier League. Ross we salute you on the occasion of your 500th appearance for Inverness Caledonian Thistle and as you are still only 30, hopefully we will see a few hundred more in seasons to come.
We will close with some comments from two of Ross' former managers, John Robertson & Steve 'Pele' Paterson.
Steve Paterson (Manager May 1995 - Dec 2002)
Ross was a big lad, even at the age of 16 when I signed him for Huntly. But one of his biggest attributes was his approach to training and his desire to get to the top in football. When he joined Huntly he had the ambition to be a professional footballer and although we were only part-time at Inverness when he joined us at the club, he saw the move as a step-up on the way to realising his ambition.
I’m sure he never dreamt when he signed that he would have been a one-club man but he must be praised for his total commitment and his dedication. I always think of him and Barry Robson, both of whom came through at Inverness, as having a similar attitude, one that drove them on to be as good as they could be. They each wanted to make something of their football, and both did.
Ross was one of my favourites because having a player like him so young and for so long he almost became like a son to me and to this day I speak with him regularly and still follow his career. He has been a tremendous player for Inverness .
I am surprised he didn’t move on, particularly after his testimonial when he may have taken stock and been satisfied with the service he gave the club, and perhaps tried football south of the border, either in the Championship or League One. Personally, I think he’s good enough for the Championship. It could be argued he might have gone south and tested himself.
I believe that if the club doesn’t win promotion this season he may look again at his career and think it is time for him to move on while he’s still at an age where he can make an impact. I certainly believe he is too good for the SFL. He has been a credit to Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
John Robertson (Manager Dec 2002 - Nov 2004)
For any player to acheive 500 appearances at any club these days does not just pay respect to a very loyal player but a player who has consistently showed desire hunger and the ability to remain in the team for such a lengthy period.
Ross Tokely has shown all these abilities in abundance and there are not many more awe inspiring sights to be seen at the Caledonian Stadium over the years than Ross charging down the wing in full flight with the ball at his feet. The fact that most of his crosses end up in the Moray Firth is irrelevant (only kidding Ross).
Having been on the end of some of Ross's less than well timed tackles in the past I know first hand how much he tries for the cause that is ICT. I actually found out that Ross is not as quick as some would think when, in the twilight of my playing days, I brushed Ross aside, and raced away with my 'electrifying pace!!!!' to score for Livingston one day. Retribution was swift though as the next two tackles saw me in row z.
Managing Ross was easy and despite his size he is a very gentle giant when he had to visit the manager s office for a chat (not that it happened very often), but the funniest thing I saw was Donald Park in full flow standing eye to eye with Ross at half time one day when Donald thought Ross was at fault for a conceded goal. Ross was still taller than Parky even though he was sitting down but did not dare look him in the eye for fear of more tongue lashing and did his best not to laugh.
Ross has chipped in with his fair share of goals over the years but it his all round game that the ICT fans have come to love and i am sure he is going to add to a tremendous appearance record over the coming years. In an age when players move with ease we should all applaud this player who is a 'giant' both on and off the pitch.

Inverness CT 2-0 Motherwell - Scottish Cup

Active Cup of Cheer...

After an involuntary winter break it was back to football action at the Caledonian Stadium tonight as ICT faced Motherwell in the Active Nation Scottish Cup 4th Round.
A goal just before half-time from Nauris Bulvitis would prove to be the winner but Dougie Imrie made sure by netting a second for ICT in 62 minutes ....

It’s Kilmarnock next for ICT in the Scottish Cup after a fantastic performance, and result, this Monday against Craig Brown’s Motherwell. For ICT, three changes were made since their last game, against Dundee, with Ross Tokely, returning after breaking his hand, coming in for Lionel Djebi-Zadi at left back. Jonny Hayes and Russell Duncan also both returned to the starting XI, replacing Eric Odhiambo, who dropped to the bench, and Stuart Duff, who returned to Aberdeen after his brief loan spell. With the big freeze looking like it’s over and done with, ICT will be delighted that this long anticipated match finally went ahead. Some revenge was to gain for ICT after ‘well hit a late equalizer in one of the final games of last season, a win that would have kept ICT in the SPL. Another late winner for ‘well against us came in the CIS cup between these two sides earlier this season, Ross Forbes with a cracking late winner to progress the Steelmen into the next round.
The match begun slowly and there was a shout for a penalty midway through the first half, a brilliant deep cross from Jonny Hayes from the right, Richie Foran and Steve Saunders seemed to tangle at the back-post, Foran hit the deck but referee Brines refused to point to the spot. A fantastic chance for Danni Sanchez in the 31st minute, some more good work from speedy winger Hayes on the right and his cut back was scuffed well wide from the Spaniard. The first shot on target came a few minutes later, but for the away side, Lee Cox being dispossessed on the edge of the area by Lukas Jutkiewicz but the on-loan Everton hit-man’s drive was turned round the post by Ryan Esson. Five minutes before half-time, Dougie Imrie replaced Jonny Hayes who picked up a slight knock, a change that would prove vital in the coming minutes. The opening goal came just two minutes later. A beautifully whipped in corner by Imrie was nodded back across goal by the returning Tokely, Adam Rooney’s attempted overhead kick was cleared off of the line, only for Nauris Bulvitis to smash in the opening goal.
Half Time 1-0
After the break, temporary ‘well manager Craig Brown re-shuffled his squad with Jamie Murphy replacing Steve Saunders on the wing. Imrie passed up a glorious chance to make it 2-0 just after the break. A cross from the left from Foran but Imrie’s skewed header beat the back post. With half-an-hour left to play, ‘Well nearly levelled, a mis-hit cross from Jim O’Brien whipped all the way to the back-post, evading everyone, but Russell Duncan managed to head the ball off of the line to keep ICT’s one-goal advantage intact. The second goal came when Imrie was taken down by a crunching challenge, calling for treatment; he managed to drag himself off of the deck when Duncan played a pass out to him. He suddenly sparked into life, beating the defenders around the 18 yard box, before calmly slotting the ball past John Ruddy to all but secure ICT’s place in the next round. Making a “shhh” gesture towards the fans in the north stand.
Full Time 2-0
Motherwell pushed and pushed to try and beat the ICT defence, but impressive displays from Narius Bulvitis and Ryan Esson ensured a clean sheet was kept and the match was won. Despite recent rumours of Dougie Imrie leaving the club, he said that he was fully committed to the club, stating that he hasn’t heard any of these rumours and has not yet talked to other clubs about a possible move.

Inverness CT -V- Motherwell - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
ICT hope that they will finally be allowed to face Motherwell in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup this Monday (18th) at 7:45PM.
The match was originally scheduled to be played on January the 9th but it was postponed on that date and again on the 12th on the advice of the police.
ICT hope that they will finally be allowed to face Motherwell in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup this Monday (18th). The match was originally scheduled to be played on January the 9th but it was postponed on that date and on the 12th on the advice of the police. Terry Butcher’s side have had a long break from competitive matches, their last game ended with a 1-1 draw with Dundee on Boxing Day. Motherwell on the other hand were in action on Saturday, an emphatic 3-0 win against Kilmarnock gave Craig Brown his first win in charge of ‘Well. The win was in their first game of 2010 and was Browns second game since replacing Jim Gannon at the end of the year. However, before that win on Saturday, Motherwell hadn’t won any of their previous 8 games, with 5 losses and 3 draws including a very disappointing 6-1 away defeat to Rangers. Boxing Day saw St. Johnstone pick up a 3-1 win against The Steelmen, bringing Gannon’s brief stint as ‘Well gaffer to an abrupt end. The Fir Park side are currently sitting 6th in the SPL, four points behind 5th placed Hearts with a game in hand. Team News Inverness ICT are boosted by the return to fitness of Ross Tokely (Broken Hand), Stuart Golabek (Hamstring) and Jonny Hayes (Hamstring) after all players missed games in December. The Highlanders have no fresh injuries to cope with but are still without Jamie Duff (Knee) who is sidelined for the whole season. ICT have not signed anybody during the current transfer window as yet but they will be delighted that nobody has left yet, bar Stuart Duff, who ended his brief loan spell with the Caley Jags at the beginning of the month. ICT will be without Lionel Djebi-Zadi, who is suspended after he was dismissed in last season’s Scottish Cup loss to Falkirk. Likely Line-up; Ryan Esson – Ross Tokely, Narius Bulvitis, Grant Munro, Stuart Golabek – Lee Cox, Russell Duncan – Jonny Hayes, Danni Sanchez, Richie Foran – Adam Rooney. Motherwell Motherwell have no new injury worries for Mondays game and are boosted by the news that top scorer Lukas Jutkiewicz and John Ruddy have extended their loan deals. The pair, both from Premier League side Everton joined ‘Well on loan for 6 months at the beginning of the season and have now extended their deals for an extra month. Jukiewicz has even stated that he would consider staying until the season. French defender Yassin Moutaoaukil has returned to Charlton after just 3-and-a-half-months at Fir Park. According to the BBC Ross Forbes has been added to the 'doubtful' klist for this game. Likely Line-up; John Ruddy – Steven Hammell, Mark Reynolds, Stephen Craigan, Giles Coke – Keith Lasley, Jim O’Brien, Tom Hateley, Ross Forbes – Lukas Jutkiewicz, John Sutton. Previous Meetings The two sides have already met this season, in the CIS cup back in September, with Motherwell coming out of that match with a place in the next round, winning 3-2. Robert McHugh headed ‘Well into a first half lead before Andy Barrowman levelled with 20 minutes of regulation time to play. When extra time came around, Motherwell went in front again through Narius Bulvitis, the Latvian defender turning into his own net. ICT continued to press and equalized again from a cracking header from local lad Grant Munro, but with penalties looming, The Steelmen stole it with two minutes to play, a beautiful curling effort from Ross Forbes beat Ryan Esson and hit the top left hand corner. In all competitive competitions the two clubs have met 21 times with 7 wins for ICT, 12 wins for ‘Well and 2 draws. A memorable game (well, for ICT!) between the two sides was back in 2004, where ICT beat ‘Well 1-0 at Fir Park through a simply magnificent half-way line strike from Barry Wilson that beat the despairing keeper to send ICT into the next round of the cup - a feat that they hope to emulate on Tuesday. Prediction This will be a difficult test for ICT, their lack of games being a bit of a pain for Terry Butcher. Motherwell have not been on the best of form recently and 1 win in 9 games isn’t a good thing so ICT will fancy their chances on Tuesday. I will go for a 2-1 win for ICT on the night with our goals coming from Adam Rooney and Jonny Hayes and Lukas Jutkiewicz grabbing a goal for Craig Brown’s side.

Morton -V- Inverness CT - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
ICT will be hoping to beat the big freeze this weekend as they are scheduled to face Greenock Morton at Cappielow Park on Saturday.

ICT will be hoping to beat the big freeze this weekend as they are scheduled to face Greenock Morton at Cappielow Park on Saturday.
[editors note: game called off Friday 15th January after a pitch inspection] Due to the adverse weather this will be ICT’s first game of 2010, should it go ahead that is, there last game being a 1-1 draw with Dundee. Morton on the other hand, played in a 1-0 loss to Partick Thistle just over a week ago, even though James Grady’s side controlling Thistle for large spells of the game. Should it go ahead, this tie will only be the second league tie in Greenock since the 2000/2001 season for ICT. That game finished in a 3-0 win for the highlanders. The same season, Morton were relegated to the second division. Since the sacking of Davie Irons, James Grady has been appointed player/manager and have won 4 out of their 13 games under him, including an impressive 5-0 win against Raith Rovers. Morton are currently sitting in 8th place, 3 points ahead of second bottom Ayr. However, the Somerset Park have 2 games in hand over Morton, so the Cappielow Park side are hovering dangerously around the relegation zone. TEAM NEWS
INVERNESS Ross Tokely and Stuart Golabek may be in contention for a call up as they may have recovered from their injuries that ruled them out for the whole of December. They may not be fit enough to merit a starting position so a place on the bench may be the alternative for the two players. Jonny Hayes should be fit after missing the Dundee game with a hamstring pull. Jamie Duff (knee) is still ruled out of the long trip down the A9 but the highland side have no fresh injury worries. Stuart Duff has ended his loan spell at ICT and has returned to Aberdeen. This may be good news for Russell Duncan as he and Daniel Stratford push for a return to the central midfield role. Likely Line-Up – Ryan Esson – David Proctor, Narius Bulvitis, Grant Munro, Lionel Djebi-Zadi – Lee Cox, Russell Duncan – Jonny Hayes, Danni Sanchez, Richie Foran – Adam Rooney.
MORTON New midfielder Michael Tidser is up for a starting place having recently signed from Ostersunds FK. Morton will be without David Van Zanten who has recently signed for Hamilton Accies, ending a brief spell with “The Ton” this may give David McGregor a way back into the side. Likely Line-Up – Colin Stewart – David McGregor, Alan Reid, Dominic Shimmin, Stewart Greacen – Erik Paartalu, Kevin Finlayson, Neil MacFarlane, Jim McAlister - Peter Weatherson, Brian Wake
PREVIOUS MEETINGS
The two clubs have met 11 times before in all competitive competitions with ICT winning 9-1 on wins with just the one draw. On the two occasions that the sides have met this season, ICT have won 3-0 (goals from Sanchez, Foran and Proctor) and 4-1 (goals from Rooney x3 and Bulvitis). The highest scoring match between both clubs came in January 2000 with a 6-2 win for ICT.
PREDICTION
It has been an on/off season for both sides but with both scoring nine goals in two games at one point in the season so we know that both teams are capable of scoring goals when on form. Morton will be fighting for the three points so they can try to pull away from Ayr at the bottom end of the table while ICT will be pushing to try and gain the best final league position possible. Both teams have something to fight for but ICT’s record against Morton is second to none and you can’t look past them getting maximum points in this clash. I will go for a 3-1 win for ICT with Rooney grabbing a couple and Hayes getting the goals for ICT with Peter Weatherson scoring for Morton.

A freezing Tulloch Caledonian Stadium today saw a tight one all draw between I.C.T. and league leaders Dundee as Caley Thistle pushed hard to gain revenge for the heartbreak of the Alba Challenge Cup Final. Leigh Griffiths opened the scoring for the Dee’s before Adam Rooney equalized shortly after the break for the home side.
Only two games survived the weather today and both finished as draws, the other game saw Partick draw 2-2 with Queen of the South.

The Dens park side nearly had a goal to celebrate after just seven minutes when Leigh Griffiths neatly slid the ball through to Colin McMenamin but the ex-Gretna man couldn’t put the ball past Ryan Esson, who tipped the ball round his post for a corner.
The opening goal came right on the stroke of half time when Lionel Djebi Zadi scythed down Leigh Griffiths and referee Mr. Nicholls had no option but to point to the spot. Griffiths made no mistake from the resulting penalty, smashing the ball into Ryan Esson’s top left hand corner, with the Caley Jags keeper going the wrong way, leaving Jocky Scott’s men with a slender half time lead.
Half Time 1-0
The Highlanders first tested Rab Douglas through the most unlikely of players, Djebi-Zadi charged 20 yards with the ball before releasing a vicious drive from distance which was well tipped over by the Dundee stopper.
Inverness continued to press for an equalizer and nearly got it in the 50th minute. A strange indirect free-kick was given, no more than 8 yards out, Douglas was booked for marking his 6 yard box. Richie Foran pulled his leg back to shoot and Douglas ran off his line before Foran hit the ball, referee Nicholls pulled out the red card but as he realized that he had just booked Douglas and was quick to put the card back into his pocket. The free kick was rolled across by Foran, only for on loan midfielder Stuart Duff to chip the ball onto the crossbar.
The leveller came six minutes later after an extremely careless back-pass from Brian Kerr was picked up by Adam Rooney, who ran all the way through and slotted the ball through the legs of Rab Douglas for his eleventh goal of the season.
However, the worst was not to come for the away side and their summer signing Gary Harkins, who received the first of his two yellow cards on 68 minutes, stupidly throwing the ball away after it went out for an Inverness throw.
Inverness pushed for a winner and Lee Cox should have scored after Duff played the ball on to Danni Sanchez, who threaded the ball through for David Proctor whose cut-back was fired over the bar by the former Leicester player.
The winner should have arrived when Adam Rooney put Sanchez through on goal but he put the ball wide when it looked easier to score.
Harkins day was summed up with 5 minutes to go when his tackle on David Proctor was given as a second yellow by the man in black.
Dundee nearly stole it in the 91st minute when a mix-up between Narius Bulvitis and Djebi Zadi was capitalised on by Griffiths but his shot was expertly saved by Ryan Esson to cap off an impressive performance for the ex-Aberdeen man.
Full Time 1-1
After the game, Adam Rooney said that he thought Inverness deserved all three points and can go into next week’s game with Ross County with much more confidence and due to it being a derby game, the players will have a bit more of an incentive to get all three points.
