Alba Challenge Cup Final - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Look out the Gaelic phrase books as this Sunday sees two of the favourites for the first division title, Inverness and Dundee, square up to each other in the televised Alba Cup Final.
This will be ICT's third appearance in the final having one win and one defeat to their name. Opponents Dundee have exactly the same record as Inverness in the various guises of this Challenge Cup for Scottish League teams below the SPL.
Inverness's first crack at the trophy fell just short as a Martin Cameron inspired Alloa Athletic, lifted the trophy after extra time and penalties in a high scoring final. Paul Sheerin scored a hat-trick in that game but still ended up on the losing side. Barry Wilson opened the Inverness scoring that day, but Alloa who were a division lower than Inverness triumphed in a penalty shoot out with the scores tied at 4-4, 3-3 after ninety minutes. Alloa went on to win 5-4 on penalties in front of 4,043 fans at the Excelsior Stadium in Airdrie. Clark, Wilson and a Cameron double secured the penalty shoot out for the Athletic. Inverness had defeated St Mirren 1-0, Hamilton 0-3, Clydebank 2-0 and Livingston 1-0 on the way to the final before being stung by the Wasps. Alloa, incidentally, had eliminated Ross County in a third round tie in Dingwall.
Teams that day on the 21st November 1999 were
Inverness CT: Fridge ,Tokely ,Hastings ,Teasdale ,McCulloch ,Sheerin ,Wilson ,Xausa (Bavidge ,104 ) ,Wyness (Glancy ,106 ) ,Charlie Christie ,Golabek (Byers ,72)
Alloa: Cairns ,Boyle ,Clark ,McAneny ,Beaton ,Valentine ,Little ,Clark (Christie ,67 ) ,Cameron ,Irvine ,Wilson (McKechnie ,65)
Subs not used Donaghy,
Our second shot at the final in season 2003/2004 proved to be more successful as we eventually overcame stubborn resistance from Airdrie United to win the trophy at McDiarmid Park by two goals to nil. David Bingham had opened the scoring with a bullet header from six yards some ten minutes before the end and, second half sub Steve Hislop killed off the game in the last minute slotting home after a mazy dribble with the Airdrie defence in tatters. 5,428 witnessed that game in Perth which brought ICT their first silverware.
Inverness CT: Brown, McAffrey, Mann, Golabek, Tokely, Duncan, Wilson, McBain, Hart (Keogh 86), Ritchie (Hislop 58), Bingham (Thomson 90).
Subs Not Used: Munro, Fraser.
Airdrie Utd: McGeown, McManus, Stewart, Scott Wilson (Ronald 73), William Wilson, Marvyn Wilson, Docherty (Singbo 64), Dunn, Vareille (McKeown 83), Roberts, Gow.
Subs Not Used: Glancy, Hollis.
This was ICT's promotion season and on the way to the final they had scored twelve goals and conceded only one, away to Peterhead, beating Ross County by a solitary goal but trouncing Raith Rovers 0-4 at Starks Park. They had opened their cup campaign by thrashing Gretna 0-5. The double was on its way.
Dundee won at the first attempt in the inaugural final in season 1990/91 by defeating Ayr United 3-2 after extra time at Fir Park, Motherwell. A Billy Dodds hat-trick won the match for Dundee after it finished 2-2 through ninety minutes. Smith and McAllister had scored for Airdrie.
Teams:-
Ayr United: D. Purdie, D. Kennedy, D. Smyth, I. McAllister, A. Gillespie, J. McCann, T. Bryce, (S. Evans), S. Johnston, A. Graham, H. Templeton, P. Weir
Dundee: T. Carson, A. Dinnie, R. Shannon, G. Chisholm, W. Jamieson, M. Craib, C. West, (J. McBride), S. Forsyth, K. Wright, W. Dodds, G. McLeod, (S. Frail)
They were not so fortunate in their next final appearance as Airdrieonians triumphed by the same scorline, this was also after extra time. The 94/95 final was the fifth Challenge Cup final and this one was in Perth. Dundee had beaten Arbroath 5-0, Morton and Dunfermline by 2-1 and knocked Inverness out on penalties after a 1-1 stalemate in the second round. Jim Duffy scored the crucial penalty that knocked Inverness out that evening. Goals by Britton, and a Hay og were not enough to prevent Airdrie lifting the trophy though, after Boyle, Harvey and Smith had scored their goals. An excellent crowd of 8,844 watched this game.
Teams that day were:-
Dundee: M. Pageaud, J. McQuillan, K. Bain, R. Farningham, J. Duffy, M. Wieghorst, G. Shaw, D. Vrto, P. Tosh, (J. Hamilton), G. Britton, N. McCann
Airdrieonians: J. Martin, A. Stewart, (Anthony Smith), P. Jack, J. Sandison, G. Hay, K. Black, J. Boyle, J. Davies, S. Cooper, P. Harvey, A. Lawrence, (Andrew Smith)
The Challenge Cup winners list is headed jointly by Airdrieonians and Falkirk with three wins apiece. Hamilton are next with two wins and Inverness, Dundee, Ross County, Queens, St Johnstone, St Mirren, Airdrie United, Stenhousemuir and Stranraer all have one win each. Ross County and Ayr United have both lost out in the finals twice, although Sundays losers will add to that statistic. The Alloa v ICT game has been the highest scoring final, and Falkirk have been the most comprehensive winners beating St Mirren 3-0 in the 93/94 final. The final has gone to extra time seven times in it's eighteen years, with penalties being required to separate the teams on five occasions. There was no competition held in 1998/99 season through lack of sponsorship.
Route to the final
Inverness have disposed of Montrose, Stranraer, Partick Thistle and Ross County on the way to the final. Two of these games required penalty shoot outs for Inverness to progress, Montrose and Partick, while we scored three goals against Stranraer without reply. In the Highland derby semi-final Inverness edged out County one nil, thanks to a fortuitous but welcome goal from Robert Eagle.
Dundee have had what appears to be a more comfortable experience including a bye in the first round, with victories away to Cowdenbeath and Stirling Albion and at home to Annan Athletic in their semi. Cowdenbeath and Annan were both beaten three nil and Stirling put up a fight before losing 2-1.
The form guide between these teams can only really be assessed on the clubs first meeting in the league this season when Inverness held Dundee to a 2-2 draw. ICT had started brightly but Dundee opened the scoring against the run of play when Harkins scored after cutting inside and shooting low past Esson from the edge of the box. Danni Sanchez quickly restored parity before Harkins once again nudged Dee ahead with the ICT defence posted missing. Lee Cox got on the end of some great foraging by Foran to complete the scoring but not the action as this turned out to be one of the best games of the season so far. So, spoils shared in the first game and here we are now on the eve of the second encounter between these sides this season. Inverness have been on a decent run recently, the only disappointment coming at the hands of local rivals County. Consistency has been the problem for Inverness with the roller coaster rides seeing some fans quick to write off ICT's chances of promotion or indeed winning anything this year. Dundee on the other hand have been bankrolled sufficiently to give them a tremendous opportunity to at last climb out of the first division. Being able to attract some of the finest SFL players to the City of Discovery has given the Dundee supporters cause for optimism. Glorious Gary Harkins and Leigh Griffiths have been instant hits with the Dee fans and former County keeper Tony Bullock is holding the No1 spot from Rab Douglas.
News from the dugouts
Inverness have eased their injury worries just in time for the final, with Eric Odhiambo making a timely appearance last weekend and scoring a superb twenty yard strike with his second touch of the ball. Jamie Duff will miss out as he will undergo surgery soon. Mr Butcher now has plenty of time to assess his squad as the Scotland assistants job has been removed from his CV. I would imagine the team which has been more settled the last few weeks will be the one that starts this Sunday, which would mean no starting place for little Jonny, who has performed well coming off the bench recently. Look out for the same 4-2-3-1 formation being used again. So that should read something like Esson in goals with Tokely, Bulvitis, Munro and Golabeck across the back four. Duncan and Proctor will provide the link from back to front and break up the Dundee attacks with Imrie Sanchez and Foran the middle men setting up Adam Rooney in the lone strikers role. It is nonetheless an attack minded formation which has seen Inverness become the leagues top scorers within the last month. Terry Butcher may see Dundee as a different proposition though and may well adopt a more cautious approach. The latest from Mr Butcher is that we have no fresh injury worries with a full squad to select from.
Dundee will have to do without Paul McHale after he suffered a groin injury during the turgid draw with Queen of the South last weekend. Maros Klimpl has undergone surgery and the Slovakian international will definitely miss this one. Cowan is doubtful, which should see Lauchlan retain his place in defence. Brian Kerr is making good progress and could return to the squad after his ankle injury. Chris Casement is back after u21 duty with Northern Ireland and will be included in the squad. Former ICT favourite Richie Hart may get a start after impressing Jocky Scott in recent games. Ex County forward Sean Higgins who scored a double against Airdrie a fortnight ago could make it difficult for the manager to ignore him.
Tm4tj prediction
Basing my prediction on the first game between these sides I can't separate the teams. Inverness have upped their game recently but Dundee are still five points ahead in the league. This game could go all the way to penalties and that's how I see it, although both teams have potential match winners in their respective squads. Eric Odhiambo could come off the bench along with Jonny Hayes and they could be key men for Inverness, while Leigh Griffiths and Gary Harkins need to be watched closely by the sometimes unreliable ICT back four.
There is one thing firmly in our favour this weekend. We are deemed to be the away team, and will be playing in our white away strip, using the away dressing room and travelling by bus to the game for a couple of hours. What better omen could we have asked for, an away day in the fair city of Perth.
On that basis, I'll stick with my penalty shoot out prediction, so it could be squeaky bum time all round, and penalty stopper Ryan Esson to become the ICT hero.

Inverness CT -V- Airdrie Utd - Report

Jags bounce back

After a disappointing Derby Day showing against rivals Ross County in Dingwall last week, Inverness Caley Thistle were keen to bounce back to winning ways against an Airdrie side that has struggled to adapt to the 1st Division since “winning” promotion after Livingston were expelled to the 3rd.
Kenny Blacks men had been finding life in the league tough and were battling with Morton and Ayr United at the wrong end of the table whilst Inverness were sitting in mid table just keeping in touch with the leaders. The reverse fixture in mid September had seen Inverness scrape a draw after a poor display which could’ve been much worse for the Jaggies had Esson not saved a 2nd half penalty.
Despite the previous weeks defeat against County, ICT had been rampant in the fixtures prior to that game scoring O'Carroll goals against Ayr United and a lacklustre Morton in Inverness. Many expected a similar score to be racked up against Airdrie however it was more close than many ICT fans would’ve liked.
14th November 2009 - 3:00PM Caledonian Stadium, Inverness INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE
2 - Sanchez (45), Odhiambo (70)
Team: Esson, Tokely, Bulvitis, Munro, Golabek, Proctor, Sanchez⚽(Odhiambo⚽ 69), Duncan, Foran (Cox 90), Rooney, Imrie (Hayes 60)

Referee C MacKay Attendance 2780 The home side started brightly and created the first real chance of the game when forward Rooney fed the ball wide to Imrie and he scampered down the right, cutting back inside his man and delivering a cross to the back post for Foran to attack. The Irishman’s header however was well saved by Airdrie keeper Robertson. Inverness’s next chance fell to Imrie who was played in by Foran and the former Clyde man, in a similar style to when he crossed for Foran earlier in the game, cut back inside before unleashing a stinging drive that Robertson did well to palm away. Whilst Inverness had started the better of the two teams, Airdrie were at times playing some nice football. Looking calm and composed the Diamonds drove at Inverness down the left flank with a series of intricate passes which saw a fine curling effort test keeper Esson who was equal to the task.
Imrie was again next to threaten for the home team when neat interplay between Spaniard Dani “Juanjo” Sanchez and former Aberdeen man Russell Duncan opened up the Airdrie back line for Imrie to have a strike at goal but his effort was charged down by a lunging Diamonds defender. The hard working Duncan crossed from the right for former Motherwell player Foran to attack who saw his header blocked by a defender and the ball went out for a corner. Inverness were now on top and it looked to simply be a matter of time before they scored. Further chances to break the deadlock fell to Foran, Sanchez and Imrie but a combination of sclaffed efforts, good goal keeping and desperate defending kept the sides on level terms. Airdrie served notice that they still offered a threat when a poor clearance from defence was seized upon by Trouten but Esson watched his effort sail comfortably over the bar.
Right on the stroke of half time the Caley Jags made the break through when a swift counter attack caught the Diamonds defence napping. Grant Munro began the move with a sliding challenge to halt an Airdrie attack and the ball fell to the feet of Dougie Imrie who charged forward and sprayed the ball wide to the left wing where Sanchez lurked with intent. The Spaniard cut inside and angled towards goal skipping past a couple of challenges before dispatching a low shot past the despairing Robertson. There was barely any time left to kick off as the referee signalled for the end of the first half and the crowd dispersed in search of pies and hot drinks to warm themselves up.
Airdrie began the 2nd half the better of the two teams and had chances to draw level. From the right side a delicious crossed ball was whipped into the box that led to a mad scramble which resulted in a number of players trying to get the decisive touch on the ball to either score or clear the danger. Luckily, for the majority of the 2,700 crowd, it was an ICT player who was able to boot the ball to safety. Airdrie increased the pressure on the Caley Jags defence when another exceptional ball from the right was headed goal wards drawing a fine save from Esson. This seemed to spark some life back into Inverness who had started the second period sluggishly. Sanchez beat his marker and lifted a ball into the box for Rooney who attempted an audacious overhead kick but succeeded only in falling on his backside and the Diamonds keeper was able to smother the weak effort. ICTs Latino star was again the creative force behind the next Caley attack when his pass picked out Imrie who thundered a volleyed effort goalwards but the Airdrie defence stood firm and charged down his effort. The games next chance fell the way of the Away side who were unlucky not to snatch an equaliser when a headed effort came off the post and bounced wide to safety.
Clearly by this point ICT manager Butcher had seen enough and decided to change things around to try and grab that elusive second goal that would surely kill the game. Imrie, who had started the game well but had faded the longer it went on, made way for Jonny “The Whippet” Hayes who took up a position in the right side and instantly began terrorising the Airdrie left back with a number of penetrating runs. It was Hayes fellow Irishman Foran who created the opening for strike partner Rooney when he played the flame haired forward in with a delightful through ball that split the Airdrie centre and left Rooney one on one with the keeper. As the Home fans rose in expectation they were left cursing their luck as Rooney blazed his effort skyward and into the back of the North Stand.
With ICT still sitting on a precarious 1 goal lead the game changing moment came when little Dani Sanchez was removed for Eric Odihambo to take to the field and he wasted no time in introducing himself to the fans who had barely seen him play since he was signed some 9 months ago. From 25 yards out, the former Leicester City man seized upon a lose ball and rifled in a superb strike on the half volley which smacked in off the post. As fine a goal as the long suffering Inverness fans had seen at home in a long time and it secured a precious three points for Butchers side. Airdrie had one final effort of note when O'Carroll spun his marker in the box and flashed an effort across the face of the goal but ICT comfortably saw out the rest of the game and deservedly picked up the three points for their efforts

Steve "Pele" Paterson, Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC's longest serving manager having spent over 7 years at the club from 1995 to 2002, was at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium this evening to launch his book "Confessions of a Highland Hero".
The location for the launch was no accident, having been the place Pele cites as providing some of the happiest years in his football career, and you'll find very few Caley Jags fans who would deny that those early years in the clubs history and some of the games and results will live longest in our memories.....none more so than the famous victory over Celtic on 8th February 2000 that spawned the world famous "Super Caley Go Ballistic, Celtic Are Atrocious" headline.Pele spoke candidly of the problems that have haunted him for so many years, and quick flick to the books contents which includes chapter titles such as "Guttered in Gourock" and "Soiled Boxers and a Gay Thumping" give you a sharp insight into what you can expect in terms of the open and honest nature of the books content.
If you want to know more then you;ll have to buy the book.  You can purchase it online from Waterstones, Amazon and WHSmith.  If you would like a signed copy then Pele will be doing a signing session at Waterstones in Inverness this Saturday (14th Nov).
Confessions of a HIghland Hero - Synopsis
Steve Paterson was set for fame and stardom with Manchester United in the 1970s, but from the age of sixteen he became gripped by an addiction to gambling before descending into alcoholism and debt. He became a soccer mercenary in Hong Kong, Australia and Japan, but his gambling and ruinous lifestyle followed him everywhere.
Despite his personal problems, Paterson became a successful football manager, first in the Highland League and then, leading Inverness Caledonian Thistle all the way to the brink of promotion to the Premier League before taking the reins at Aberdeen Football Club from which he was sacked as his drinking and gambling escalated. By then, he had spent more than GBP1m on gambling over a 30 years period and racked up thousands of pounds worth of debt.
In November 2008 Paterson decided to confront his addictions and booked into the famous Sporting Chance Clinic in Hampshire. He has now turned his life around and today works as a social worker helping youngsters in the north of Scotland.
This candid and brutally honest memoir recounts the heady days of footballing success, twinned with the devastating hubris of his addictive personality. It is a heart-rending and insightful account of one of the most fascinating players and managers in the Scottish game.

County win derby

Ross County won their second Highland derby of the season in a pulsating encounter at Victoria Park.
The Staggies took the lead when Scott Morrison's rocket free kick cannoned off the underside of the crossbar and Scott Boyd headed home the loose ball.
Morrison then got down the left and his cross into the box was headed home by man-of-the-match Michael Gardyne.
Inverness scored late when Adam Rooney scored from the rebound after his penalty was saved by Michael McGovern.

Ross County -V- Inverness CT - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Revenge Mission for Butchers Boys Tomorrow, Inverness Caledonian Thistle will visit the quaint market town of Dingwall, looking to avenge the 1-3 reverse they suffered in the first Highland derby of the season at Tulloch Caledonian Stadium at the end of August. Victoria Park will have more people inside it than the entire population of Dingwall. The Mallard will be bursting at the seams as droves of Caley Thistle supporters will be making the short train journey to this sleepy backwater. HMS Sneck will berth alongside the watering holes and her crew members will make merriment before they make the short trek to face the Jailend and witness the frenzy of a Highland derby. Ross County need no introduction to ICT fans. These derby matches are eagerly awaited by both sets of supporters and were one of the drawbacks of being in the SPL for the last few years, while County went up and down the lower leagues. This Seasons Encounters In the first league game County handed Inverness a major lesson. ICT’s new recruits failed to match the robust style of County and were swept aside as County cruised to a convincing 3-1 victory in front of a demoralised North Stand. Ex Jaggie Ian Vigurs chipped in with a cheeky back heeled goal which must have delighted him, the Tulloch residents were less enthusiastic about it. This was after Di Giacamo had opened the scoring, with County controlling the midfield and bossing the Inverness newbies. Little Jonny Hayes scored what proved to be a consolation for the home team as Brittain killed off any hope Inverness had of making a comeback. One of the worst performances by Inverness in a derby game, and as bad as the 1-5 thumping we suffered a few years earlier. In the Alba cup semi-final, Inverness managed to hold on for a none too convincing win, with Robert Eagle scoring the winner from a ball crossed into the danger area on the turn. He was rewarded for his quick thinking as the ball curled into the net, although Sanchez was on hand had the ball not nestled in the County goals. County surged back at the Jaggies and a rocket shot from Paul Lawson smacked the crossbar, but a nervy ICT held on to reach the final. StattoMann County have had the better start to the season and sit two points above Inverness on 21 points, only two points from top spot. Inverness are unbeaten away from home this season and are the top away scorers in the league with thirteen goals, five of those coming at Ayr a couple of weeks ago. County have won three, drawn two and lost only once at home, scoring nine goals in the process, but conceding seven. That is in stark contrast to Inverness’s home form, although last weeks sound thrashing of Morton was a boost all round for ICT, with Adam Rooney securing a hat-trick. Recent form actually favours Inverness as we have scored nine goals in the last two games, albeit against relegation prospects, and three wins, one draw and two defeats in the previous six. County have won two, drawn two and lost two in their last six league games, failing to score more than twice in any of those games. Statistics don’t count for much when these games come around, but with Butcher deploying an attack minded 4-2-3-1 formation the goals have started to flow in the right direction for the Caley Jags. I doubt very much that he will tinker, (see what I did there), with this winning formation and team selection. We could have a matchwinner on the bench in the shape of the electrifying pocket rocket Jonny Hayes. He also has a point to prove after taking a heavy knock in the last encounter. Derby Squads For Inverness, the only injuries are long term casualty Jamie Duff and the almost ready Eric Odhiambo. Last weeks Inverness squad:- Esson, Tokely, Bulvitis, Munro, Golabek, Proctor, Sanchez, Duncan, Foran (Hayes 63), Rooney (Barrowman 86), Imrie (Cox 80). Subs Not Used: Stratford, Allison Ross County will have to do without ex ICT defender Steven Watt who is starting a two match suspension tomorrow. There are no other reported injuries from either camp. Last weeks County squad:- McGovern, Miller, Morrison, Watt, Keddie, Kettlewell (Craig 46), Lawson, Brittain, Vigurs (Grant 83), Gardyne (Di Giacomo 46), Wood. Subs Not Used: Malin, Boyd TM4TJ prediction I expect a really tough battle in this one. Inverness have started to score freely and County have stuttered recently. But these are games for big boys and the County defence will not roll over like Ayr and Morton did. However, I will stick my neck out and go for the away day Butchers boys to continue their unbeaten run and sneak a tense Highland derby by the odd goal in three.

Inverness CT -V- Morton - Report

The day we won at Home

Hold on to your hats, folks! The impossible has happened! WE WON AT HOME!!!!! No joke – at long last, ICT have got the monkey off their backs, having stuffed Morton 4-1. Adam Rooney led the charge with a hat trick, making it the first time since I don’t know when (Wyness and Ritchie perhaps?) that Caley Thistle have had hat-tricks scored in consecutive matches. Nauris Bulvitis, of all people, was also on target as Terry Butcher’s sudden change to an attacking setup added to the five goals procured at Ayr last weekend.

In light of the Ayr result, there was no surprise that TB went with the same starting eleven again, especially as Russell Duncan had overcome a back problem to keep his place in centre mid. So Adam Rooney continued up front, with Richie Foran and Dougie Imrie wide and Danni Sanchez as an old fashioned number 10 (okay, he was wearing number 7, but you know what I mean). Our opponents, in contrast, were scunnered by injuries; with seven players out, Morton had three youth team players on their bench. James Grady also named himself as a sub, but his co-manager Alan McManus was in the starting lineup. As we have become accustomed to in our home games, things started slowly and tentatively at the TCS. Attempts to play out from the back were a bit wayward, though Morton were toothless up front. The main talking point from the opening quarter was the outrageous hairdo belonging to Morton striker Brian Wake, who sported a Jonathan Woodgate-style mullet-with-hairband job. While the debate ranged over whether headbands should be allowed in the Scottish first division, Caley produced a goal almost out of nothing. The punt forward from the back by Grant Munro was no surprise; however the fact that Dougie Imrie climbed highest to knock the ball on was. No time for us to rub our eyes in disbelief, however, as Adam Rooney seized the opportunity and smacked a ferocious half volley into the bottom right hand corner of Colin Stewart’s net from the edge of the box. If the keeper had got anything on it, he would have probably have ended up in the net with the ball. Suddenly, Caley tails were up, and Morton heads were down. The home side went for the jugular, and soon had their reward. Sanchez tossed in a corner, and while it was difficult to tell who won the initial header (Foran possibly?), there was no doubt that, after the keeper did well to parry, it was Nauris Bulvitis who stabbed the loose ball into the roof of the net. You couldn’t help feeling that, if he had been two yards further out, the ball would have flown over the bar, but no matter; Caley were two up and coasting. “What the f*** is going on?” chanted the North Stand support. Cue a return of the car crash defending that has been so prevalent this season, as Morton hauled themselves back into the match. The centre of the Caley backline promptly went AWOL, allowing Erik Portaloo – sorry, Paartalu – to waltz into the box and knock it past Ryan Esson. And, for a few minutes, there was a nervous feeling that we might just mess it up again. Then the visitors made the mistake of making Richie Foran angry. The Irishman got a stern talking to after clattering Ryan McGuffie, then ended up in the book for dissent. He responded in the best way possible, breaking between Morton’s central defenders ten, with no space to shoot, he showed tremendous awareness to square the ball to Rooney, who deposited it into the net again, with the half-time whistle imminent. In truth, the game was probably done and dusted by this point, but ICT came out for the second half determined to make sure. Ten minutes into the second period, Dougie Imrie, livewire as always, beat his full back for the umpteenth time and, with space opening up for a shot, he was wrestled to the deck for a stonewall penalty. It was a given that Rooney would grab the ball, and he duly sent the keeper the wrong way from the spot to clinch that elusive first home win in the league, and a hat trick for himself. The match effectively became a training game after that, though Rooney continued to scavenge for goals. First Stewart produced a first class save to keep out a point-blank header, then he managed to get in behind only to drive his shot wide from an acute angle. Rossco nearly added to the rout, glancing a header wide from a corner, and there was still time for the Obligatory Andrew Barrowman Miss, as the substitute somehow failed to convert Lee Cox’s cutback from three yards out (in Barrowman’s defence, a Morton player might have got a foot in). But in the end, it was a comfortable win, and one which now leaves ICT only four points off top coming into the derby in Dingwall next week. Even some rain on the way home wasn’t enough to dampen spirits. Bring on County!
The Patented Hislopsoffsideagain Man Of The Match Award No doubt over who wins this. Adam Rooney was the star of the show. Honourable mentions go to Dougie Imrie, who was a constant menace, and the midfield pair of Proctor and Duncan, who broke up every Morton attack that came their way.
