QotS 1-1 Inverness CT - Report

Card Happy ref ruins game

The Alan Muir show finished at 1-1, and at the end of the game Terry Butcher was sitting in the stand, 6 yellows had been issued and there were 3 reds as well.
The controversial referee who was lambasted by both managers after his SPL game ;last week will surely face a similar fate this week as he would seem to have over-reacted to a physical but not dirty game.

Referee Alan Muir Attendance 2196 There are some football matches that, with their sophistication, class and beauty, can be compared to beautiful women.
If ICT’s 1-1 draw in Dumfries was a woman, it would be Vanessa Feltz. After disfiguring facial burns.
Jonny Hayes gave Inverness a first half lead against Queen of the South, but once more Terry Butcher’s side showed an inability to protect their advantage, conceding to Bob Harris’ superb free kick after the break in a match which saw Richie Foran and Russell Duncan both sent off, along with David Lilley of the home side. It was a game of much toil but little craft, with ICT once more treating us to long periods of lacklustre play interspersed with rare moments of quality, whilst QOS had most of the possession but did not quite have the quality to produce enough chances.
Coming off last week’s defeat to Partick, Caley Thistle made three changes. With full backs Ross Tokely (broken hand) and Stuart Golabek (hamstring) out, Lionel Djebi-Zadi was brought in from the cold and David Proctor reverted to defence, with Lee Cox coming into midfield. Further up the pitch, Danni Sanchez was dropped to the bench, with Eric Odhiambo deployed in the “second striker” role.
Not that the new faces seemed to improve things early on. It was Gordon Chisholm’s side who came flying out of the traps. The first 20 minutes were spent almost exclusively in the Inverness half. Rocco Quinn dragged a shot wide, while Peter Weatherston was denied by a last ditch LDZ block. But with Ryan Esson much the busier keeper, a goal for Queens seemed inevitable, which made it all the more bizarre when Caley took the lead against the run of play. Jonny Hayes got a rare chance to run at full-back Bob Harris and, having skipped past him with the aid of a lucky ricochet, smacked a right-foot shot across the keeper and into the bottom corner. The goal was barely deserved, but was a moment of rare quality.
The home team were visibly deflated by the setback, and Eric Odhiambo came close to doubling the lead, glancing a header just wide. Harris nearly levelled things up by getting on the end of a fluid one-touch passing move, but Ryan Esson made a magnificent one handed save from his strike. But the talking points at the break were more to do with the cards being dished out willy-nilly by ref Alan Muir. The official had been at the centre of controversy at Motherwell-Dundee United last weekend, but by half-time had already booked four players in a match that, while robust, was hardly violent. One of those carded was Foran, for a studs-up tackle, and it would be regretted later on.
As expected, Queen of the South came out and had a go in the second half, with Esson making another great save, this time in a one-on-one with Weatherston, before Lee Cox nicked in to deny Derek Holmes the rebound. Weatherston then blazed over when he should have hit the target, whilst at the other end Adam Rooney shot straight at the goalkeeper and Eric, when clean through, took too many touches and was tackled before he could shoot. As the game entered the last half hour, though, things started to go against Inverness. Rooney appeared to be scythed down by Marc McAusland as he raced clear, but Muir deemed the tackle to be fair; a free kick would surely have resulted in McAusland’s dismissal for a professional foul.
Butcher, incensed on the touchline was promptly sent to the stand for his protests, just as Barry Wilson emerged from the subs bench for the home side. He had an instant impact, drawing another rash tackle from Foran which earned the Irishman a second yellow card. Shouts of “cheat!” and “you used to be a legend” were somewhat harsh, as Foran’s challenge was mistimed at best. To add insult to injury, Bob Harris stepped up and delightfully curled the resulting free kick into the top corner for the equalizer (whilst the visiting support were occupied singing “happy birthday” to Mrs Gringo). But even then the drama wasn’t over, as David Lilley and Russell Duncan got involved in fisticuffs over the ball. On the advice of his assistants, Lilley was shown a straight red and Duncan a second yellow, though no-one can actually recall the midfielder being booked earlier.
In the aftermath, Danni Sanchez, brought on only a few minutes earlier for Odihambo, was hooked for the more defensive McBain, whilst Dougie Imrie also entered the fray. Incredibly, it was Inverness’ nine men who nearly nicked the winner, with the energetic Imrie flashing a header just wide. But in the end the points were shared, a result which does neither side’s promotion prospects any good.
The Patented Hislopsoffsideagain Man of The Match
Ryan Esson, easily. The stop from Harris in the first half would be considered a top save at any level, and he displayed composure often sorely lacking in the rest of the game.

QotS -V- Inverness CT - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Is December too early for ICT to be facing a must-win game?
Inverness face their longest away journey of the season so far this weekend as they take on Queen of the South in Dumfries. Both sides come into this one knowing that defeat would result in further lost ground on the leading pack. Gordon Chisholm's Doonhammers side were knocked off top spot after a midweek defeat at home to Dunfermline; it's been a bad week for the home side, who were roundly hammered by Airdrie United in the cup last Saturday, but they do come into this game second in the table, three points behind Dundee, and with the division's best goal difference. They also have Derek Holmes, the first division's top scorer with eight league goals this term, three of which came in QOS's 3-1 victory at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium earlier in the campaign. Caley Thistle, on the other hand, have slipped to sixth place after blowing a half-time lead at Partick Thistle last time out, going down 2-1. With this following on from the AlbaCup final defeat to Dundee, Terry Butcher and the fans will be praying that a third successive second half collapse can be avoided. TEAM NEWS ICT: With our defence looking precarious as it is, news of Ross Tokely's broken hand could not have come at a worse time. Rossco is expected to be out till New Year and is left two appearances short of the magical 500th. Daniel Stratford and Lee Cox are both candidates to replace him, whilst David Proctor could also drop into the right-back area. Stuart Golabek is also rumoured to have tweaked a hmastring, which is likely to bring Lionel Djebi-Zadi into strong contention for a starting spot. Otherwise there are no new injuries, with Jamie Duff still a long-term absentee. Dougie Imrie (who returns from suspension) and Eric Odihambo are both pushing for starting positions. Likely lineup: Ryan Esson - David Proctor, Nauris Bulvitis, Grant Munro, Lionel Djebi-Zadi - Lee Cox, Russell Duncan - Jonny Hayes, Danni Sanchez, Richie Foran - Adam Rooney QOS: Gordon Chisholm is still without long-term absentees Ludovic Roy, Craig Barr, Craig Reid and Steve Tosh. Rangers defender Jordan McMillan made his debut against Dunfermline after agreeing an emergency loan and is likely to keep his place. Former ICT legends Barry Wilson and Dennis Wyness are likely to start the game on the bench. Likely lineup: David Hutton - Jordan McMillan, David Lilley, Marc McAusland, Robert Harris - Paul Burns, Rocco Quinn, Stephen McKenna, Willie McLaren - David Weatherston, Derek Holmes THE PATENTED HISLOPSOFFSIDEAGAIN PREDICTION Would it be churlish of me to suggest that ICT will have a commanding and deserved half-time lead, and somehow wind up losing the match?

Partick Th 2-1 Inverness CT - Report

Partick win in the mist

There's little point in getting too outraged about this. It was a fairly even, fairly poor game between two first division sides. We never really got started despite taking an early lead: I think Partick sat in a little more than Dundee last week, which meant Hayes' pace was less effective. Sanchez was closely marked and seemed to get bullied off the ball a little too easily. Neither team was fully in control at any point in either half, but we seemed to get cut open a little too easily for the goals, although the mist was a bit too thick to see exactly what happened.
In terms of individuals, I felt neither full back played well today: Rosscoe in particular was guilty of a lot of poor distribution and both looked laboured trying to track back. Both central midfielders worked hard, Duncan especially, but there was a serious lack of vision in their passing. Foran tired his best but as with Hayes, seemed to struggle to cope with the Partick defence sitting in. Rooney looked isolated for most of the game despite working hard and Eric, when he came on, hinted at a lot of promise when running on to a ball but had a poor first touch.
Overall, a draw would have been fair, a defeat was harsh, but as a reminder that promotion is a rare thing for any team relegated to the first division, the game was a good barometer.

Referee Dougie McDonald Attendance 2353     Wanderer saw it like this: Another bad day at the office...It was like deja vu all over again. My first shout at KO "It's 90 minutes this week lads" obviously not loud enough!
Unlike last Sunday I thought the 2 sides were more evenly matched. At least we huffed and puffed and gave the appearance of trying although, as has been said, Partick played much deeper than Dundee and space for runners was at a premium.
Esson had at least 2 (or 3) class saves in the first half and the fact we spent time singing his praises demonstrates it wasn't just our forwards getting the chances. Our goal, from a Hayes free kick which found the danger area, was a fair reflection of the play up to that point.
120 ICT fans singing well and not a peep from the 2000 Partick supporters in the first 45 minutes.
Second half we looked disorganised, lacking confidence and all too willing to hoof the ball back to a grateful PT defence.
"Keep it tight for 10 minutes" I was thinking, the rest is history. The PT fans suddenly woke up and, perhaps thankfully, we couldn't see half of what was going on in the b0llock freezing conditions.
First part of the season we didn't know how to play in the first half, now we've got that cracked it seems the players think the job's done at HT. These players are full-time professionals aren't they?
GET IT SORTED TERRY.

ICT Chris added
We probably should have taken a point from that game, I think. We started well and it was a great ball from Hayes for the goal, I'm not sure if Tokely did get a touch on it. After this we had another couple of opportunities (Sanchez putting the ball wide when he should have done better) but let Partick come back into the game. We seemed to lose any outball up front and every time our defenders had the ball all we could do was give the ball away again. According to my mates (I was going for a slash at the time) Esson made a wonder-save from a header and then a Partick striker sent a free header straight at the keeper from inside the six yard box - they really should have scored.
Second half continued in the same vein but with the fog coming in I couldn't really see what was going on at the other end. The first goal was a header, I think but the second goal is a mystery to me. We did step up our performance a bit, Tuffey had to push a Hayes drive behind for a corner and Bulvitis sent a header just past. In the closing minutes Foran started to assert himself and sent a low cross for Cox which the home defender somehow managed to prevent going in - a remarkable clearance.
All in all, I thought we could have taken a point from the game but I can't complain too vociferously about losing. We really do look brittle at the back and, if we aren't on a game, we don't have a great deal of penetration up front. The period of pressure we had at the end of the game didn't see us creating any great chances - we seem to just chip the ball into the box and hope for the best or, these days, give the ball to Hayes and hope he can beat his man and hit a good cross. Foran had a relatively quiet game but started putting himself about towards the end - we need this from him for the full 90 minutes if we are going to challenge.

Half-Season Tickets

Teaser Paragraph:
Caley Thistle are playing Santa Claus by offering half-season tickets as the perfect Christmas gift for football fans -- and a prezzy which lasts right through to May.
They have also added the boxing day fixture Vs Dundee as a bonus.
Caley Jags offer 10-game Christmas bonus as the perfect Gift
Caley Thistle are playing Santa Claus by offering half-season tickets as the perfect Christmas gift for football fans -- and a prezzy which lasts right through to May.
Manager Terry Butcher and Commercial Manager Darren Mackintosh were pictured giving a couple of youngsters their half season tickets at the stadium on Thursday 26th November to celebrate the 10 game half season ticket launch
Children aged 8 to 12 years can have a half-season ticket for only £13, that is only £1.30 per game -- which could be the ideal prezzy idea for parents, grandparents or relatives to give to a deserving boy or girl. Kids under eight are already allowed in free to matches under the club's commitment to 'family football.'
Terry Butcher said:"I think it's a great scheme and these half-season tickets really offer exceptional value for money. I hope many youngsters and not-so-young people end up with them in their Christmas stocking. It's an excellent solution for people puzzling what to give someone as the ideal gift.
"Half-season ticket sales will boost the club's income and help our plans for team strengthening in the January transfer window. It also gives more fans the opportunity to cheer us on as we step up our push to bounce back to the SPL by starting 2010 with a good winning run."
Commercial manager Darren Mackintosh revealed that as a 'festive bonus', the club will include the attractive home game with Dundee on Boxing Day in the half-season package, which would not normally begin until the New Year.
He added:"Adding the Dundee game, our chance to avenge the Alba Challenge Cup final defeat, greatly enhances the package, so it's a Christmas present from the club. The package then rolls out with the big Highland derby with Ross County on January 2 which should attract a capacity crowd. These top tussles make it a real value-for-money gift.
"Guaranteeing your friend or loved one a seat at these high-profile games over the festive season would go down really well -- and with eight further home games to come. So it's actually ten gifts in one.
" If we're chasing promotion, think of the pride the recipient will take in knowing they have the security of a reserved seat for a series of major matches."
"We're confident these packages will fill the recipients with Christmas cheer and will prove extremely popular. They're the gifts people will literally get a kick out of."
The half-season briefs can be purchased online at www.ictfc.co.uk or by visiting the Stadium ticket office or by phoning 01463 222880 option 1,2.

Partick -V- Inverness CT - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Brazil to Firhill in six days:
Terry Butcher will need to lift the players after last weeks disappointment in the Alba Cup Final when his players crashed to defeat against Dundee after taking an early two goal advantage.
Inverness were Brazilliant in the first half, unfortunately the samba experience didn’t last long as Dundee took over after the break. In the week that Pele launched his book; some fans must have thought he was back in charge of the team as we tore Dundee a new one for forty five minutes. Back to the bread and butter of league business this Saturday though.
The consolation for Butcher is the knowledge that ICT played Dundee off the park in the first half, but he is still left with the conundrum to solve, why are ICT putting in these Jekyll & Hyde performances in the same game. This game marks the start of a difficult run for Butchers boys and points could be at a premium in the run up to the New Year We have already suffered at the hands of Partick Thistle this season, losing three goals in a seven minute period before half time at Tulloch Stadium, or maybe more accurately we suffered at the feet of Liam Buchanan as he scored two and set up the third as our defence went for a quick nap, an all to familiar occurrence this season.
In that game we upped our effort in the second half but it proved to be too little too late as a Rooney penalty and a flying Foran header clawed us to within touching distance. Alas Partick held on frantically to record a three two victory. This time however, the static Inverness back four will be saved the hassle of looking after Buchanan as he is out for a few weeks. To counter balance that, the Jags have acquired another thorn in our side in the shape of ex-Aberdeen and Falkirk striker Steve Lovell. He has sent ICT fans home unhappy on a number of occasions by scoring late, nay very late goals against us, notably for the Dons.
Partick have also added twenty two year old midfielder Jamie Adams to their squad. He is on a loan deal until the 16th of January from Kilmarnock. He had never played in the first team yet as a serious knee injury ruined his promising early career. At over six feet he can be a handful for any defence.
Recent form guide Inverness have pushed themselves back into contention for a run at the promotion slot after thumping wins against Ayr and Morton. Our frailties however, were exposed once again at the hands of good neighbours and erstwhile Highland companions Ross County. We appear to switch off too easily and when the going gets tough, the tough need to get going and that’s when our midfield need to knuckle down and toughen up to the battling styles of the first division.
A lack of direction and someone to put their foot on the ball leads to the inevitable aimless long balls up to isolated strikers. This tactic should be well binned against the Harry Wraggs as experienced ex-County defender Ian Maxwell will mop everything up that comes his way. Maxwell was outstanding in the first league game at Inverness and was one of the reasons Partick held on, albeit nervously, to take the points.
In last Sundays televised Alba Cup Final Inverness came out of the blocks flying, none more so than Jonny Hayes. The little leprechaun has a tremendous burst of pace akin to Usain Bolt, well maybe even quicker, but as witnessed by all, when Dundee eventually got going our midfield failed to feed the winger and ultimately his contribution suffered.
Danni Sanchez was a mysteriously removed player from the game by Inverness boss Butcher. The flair player was having a good day and was subbed for Lee Cox as we attempted to shore up. He probably suffered from the midfields lack of punch in the second half as the battle warmed up. But, we have shown some appetite for the game, and resounding wins have seen Inverness become the top scorers in the league. Unfortunately our defence which has been good enough to thwart Rangers and Celtic at times are now seen as a joke and week in week out we are shipping cheap goals. To have a manager who at one time was a formidable and fearless centre half, it seems unacceptable to our fans that he is unable to sort out our inadequacies in this department and that was once again evident against Dundee. The need for some pace at the back has become increasingly noticeable and is surely a must in the January sales.
At this stage of the season, both clubs sit only five points behind joint leaders Queen of the South and Dundee. Partick have faltered recently with three wins, three defeats and a draw at Dingwall since we last played each other. Recent defeats to Raith Rovers and Dunfermline has taken the edge of the Jags drive to the top, with wins only achieved against the bottom three clubs during this run. This bears a remarkable resemblance to the way ICT’s season has gone. During the same period, Inverness have had four wins two defeats and a draw with the Pars, the defeats coming at the hands of County and Queens, while the lesser teams have been comfortably beaten. Squads for the weekend Inverness have no new injury worries and only long term absentee Jamie Duff is a certainty to miss out. The good news for Jamie is that he has just undergone surgery on his cruciate injury and the medics expect him to make a full recovery.
Barrowman and McBain seem to be out of the equation recently although it was reported a couple of weeks ago that they were back in training, from what I don’t know. Dougie Imrie’s insanity saw him red carded and he will be forced to sit out a couple of games, depending on the nature of the offence as seen by the official at the weekend.
Eric only managed to get on the park for four minutes against Dee and that must surely leave question marks over his fitness after recovering from his broken bone. He would have been seen as a perfect replacement for Jonny Hayes last week, but Mr Butcher thought otherwise and kept him benched for almost the entire ninety minutes. Eric had a dream return to the first team the previous week scoring within two minutes of his introduction with a sweet strike from over twenty yards. My bet is the same team that started the final will get the nod. That could read Esson, Rossco, Bully, Grantie, Golly, Proctor, Duncan, Hayes, Sanchez, Foran and Rooney on his own up front. Partick as mentioned previously have lost the services of Liam Buchanan till around Xmas time. Steve Lovell and Jamie Adams have been added to their squad. They still have dangerous strikers in man of many clubs big Jim Hamilton and Simon Donnelly, the former Celtic prospect. There is plenty of experience at the back with Alan Archibald and John Robertson able to back up Ian Maxwell. Paul Cairney chipped in with Particks consolation goal in the 3-1defeat at Dunfermline. Corcoran and Rowson offer even more experience to the Jags squad and ICT will need to be at their best to avoid defeat. Jonny Tuffey will be back after his international weekend with the Northern Irish squad, as he missed the Dunfermline game. Last squad:- Hinchcliffe, Paton, Archibald, Adams (Lovell 66), Robertson, Maxwell, Cairney, Rowson (Erskine 77), Buchanan, Donnelly (Hodge 66), Corcoran. Subs Not Used: Corrigan, Scully. Tm4tj prediction My predictions are about as welcome and accurate as Billy Dodds’s ones. This should be a tight game. I don’t believe Inverness will gift Partick the opportunities to race into a lead this time round as surely Mr Butcher will be wise to this by now. If Butcher can motivate the players after last weeks crash then it’s possible that Inverness can take all three points back up the A9. On the other hand, McCall is known for getting the best out of his players and this is the perfect game for both sets of players to bounce back to form. All said, I will be sitting on the fence and will be happy to settle for a point in a scoring draw as we are not the best at keeping the opposition out but on the other hand we do have players capable of scoring. 2-2, Thistle do nicely.
