Rangers 5-0 Inverness CT - Report

Five in a row...

Things went from bad to worse for Inverness Caledonian Thistle today on their visit to Ibrox Stadium when they suffered their 5th consecutive loss in a row.
Whilst most fans wouldn't have been expecting to take anything from the game in terms of points, I doubt too many will be biting their tongue when it comes to commenting on the manner of the 5-0 loss.
With no referee to blame today Criag Brewster will be hard pressed to excuse the fact that we lost 5 goals in the opening 45 minutes and that 4 of them came as a result of errors on the part of the players, with Michael Fraser being the biggest culprit.

Referee  C Allan  Attendance    Man of the Match   From CTO:
It is not that losing to Rangers is shameful it is the manner and way of losing that is disgraceful.
For some time now it has been obvious that Brewster has used the wrong tactics and that he does not have full support from the dressingroom. This needs to change immediately. If Brewster cannot achieve modest gains then we need to find a manager who is a capable coach of tactics and has good man management skills.
Up till now I have resisted call for major change and only a few days ago I said we should wait until the turn of the year before considering Brewsters position. I was wrong!

Rangers v Inverness CT Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Inverness Caledonian Thistle head to Ibrox tomorrow hoping to reverse recent form of four consecutive defeats. A trip to face one half of the Old Firm may seem the last thing that the Jags need but Craig Brewster will emphasis the opportunity to cause a big upset and give the Highlanders a morale boost in a crucial period of the campaign.
Rangers have enjoyed a solid start to the season, with the undoubted highlight for the Govan fans a surprise 4-2 win at the home of arch-rivals Celtic. Particularly impressive for the Ibrox club have been summer signing Pedro Mendes, who has slotted in well since his arrival from Portsmouth. However, Rangers showed that they can be vulnerable when they looked flat in losing 1-0 at Love Street to then bottom side St Mirren.
RANGERS v INVERNESS CT
Ibrox Stadium, Glasgow
Saturday 1st November, 3:00pm
Past Meetings
Rangers and Inverness Caledonian Thistle have played each other 13 times with the scorecard standing at seven wins for the Glasgow club, two wins for Caley Thistle and four draws. The only meeting prior to Caley’s promotion to the SPL came in the 1996 Scottish Cup. The then 3rd Division Caley Thistle lined up against a star-studded Rangers team, including Paul Gascoigne and Brian Laudrup. Steve Paterson’s part-time side acquitted themselves well before succumbing 3-0.
Over eight years passed before the sides met again but since Inverness’ promotion to the top flight they have often proved a thorn in the side of Rangers. During Charlie Christie’s sole season in charge Caley went unbeaten in the sides fixtures, winning two games and drawing one. Both wins have gone into club folklore and in particular a fantastic showing just after Christmas 2006 that saw Caley Jags come from a goal down to claim victory thanks to a last minute John Rankin 30 yard shot is fondly remembered by followers of the Inverness club. This followed up a stunning win over Paul Le Guen’s side at Ibrox in October of that year when Graham Bayne stabbed home after a blunder from comedy keeper Lionel Leitzi. Caley Thistle have a respectable record in games at Ibrox – in the six games the Highland club have played on Glasgow’s South side, they have only lost twice, winning one and drawing three times.
Despite this good pedigree, Rangers enjoyed by far the better of these fixtures last season, completing a clean sweep of wins without conceding a goal.
Players To Watch
For Caley Thistle, fans will look to the front players to make chances count. In games against the Old Firm, especially away from home taking opportunities is vital. Adam Rooney has experience of playing in the English Championship and will relish the big stage – he has looked dangerous in front of goal in his run-outs so far this season and will be disappointed only to have bagged two goals. The Ireland under 21 internationalists pace and power will be vital assets as the Jags attempt to pull off a shock.
For Rangers, all eyes will be on the probably return to the starting XI of Barry Ferguson. Rangers and Scotland captain Ferguson has been missing all season after surgery on his ankle. Rangers fans will be keen to see Ferguson line up alongside impressive recent performers Mendes and Kevin Thomson in the middle of park. However, Ian Black will be keen to impress against his former clubmate at Blackburn Rovers and Ferguson will have to avoid any rustiness if he is to have a successful return.
Prediction
Games against the Old Firm are usually considered ‘bonus’ games by the other SPL sides – anything gained is an unplanned and unexpected fillip for the season. However, Caley Thistle will line up with players who have enjoyed success at Ibrox before and should not be overawed by the occasion. If the visitors manage to keep the fickle crowd quiet, or even cause tension from the stands to transmit to the pitch, they could have a chance to pull off an upset. However, the odds have to be on a home win, given the disparity in resources, and form, between the two sides at the moment.

Falkirk 1-0 Inverness CT - CIS League Cup

CIS dropouts

Inverness Caledonian Thistle fell to defeat to Falkirk in the CIS Cup quarter final tie last night. The match was settled by a controversial first half header from Neil McCann, with much of the post-match discussion dominated by debate over several contentious decisions made by referee David Somers.
Falkirk made one change to the XI who had beaten Kilmarnock away on Saturday with Michael Higdon coming into the line up at the expense of suspended Steve Lovell. The news of Lovell’s absence would have cheered the 200 strong away support, given the ex-Aberdeen and Dundee strikers prolific record against Inverness. Caley Thistle made two changes to their line up with Ryan Esson coming in to make his third league cup start ahead of usual custodian Michael Fraser and Roy McBain lining up in midfield in place of Ian Black. Black, a talismanic figure this season, didn’t even feature on the bench although this may have been related to his recent problems with injury – he was invalided off in two of Caley Thistle’s last three matches.

Team: Esson, Tokely, Duff, Munro, Hastings, Cowie, Duncan, McBain (Wilson, 63), Imrie (Vigurs, 80),
Wood (Barrowman, 63), Rooney
 Subs - Fraser, Proctor
Referee  D Sommers  Attendance    Man of the Match
The game kicked off in freezing conditions but the home fans were nearly warmed in only the second minute when a long ball was sent goalwards by ex Coventry City and Livingston man Graham Barrett. It looked as though the Bairns had hit the ground running, but Jags captain Grant Munro got back to make a vital goal line clearance.
Caley Thistle’s first chance came in the tenth minute when Don Cowie, who scored here for the Jags earlier in the season, burst onto a through ball from Garry Wood. Although Cowie managed to take the ball round Falkirk keeper Scott Flinders, he was forced too wide to take full advantage and his shot was turned around the post.
Flinders, a loan signing from Crystal Palace, impressed throughout the night and made another vital stop moments later. The Jags move had an international flavour as Canadian international cap Richard Hastings hit a deep cross which Irishman Adam Rooney met with a powerful header that Flinders pushed wide. A few moments later the English keeper made an instinctive block low to his left to push a shot from Inverness’ teenage stopper Jamie Duff past the post.
Caley Jags were looking hungry and carved out another chance on the half hour mark when Don Cowie combined with Garry Wood on the edge of the Falkirk box. Cowie’s snapshot was hit was pace but he couldn’t find the target.
ICT looked to be taking a hold on the game but were hit with a sucker punch in the 36th minute. A long ball over the top saw the whole ICT back line stop for offside but the flag stayed down. Michael Higdon picked up the ball and after his shot hit the bar, the rebound was nodded in by veteran winger Neil McCann. Craig Brewster was incensed on the sidelines, remonstrating extensively with both Somers and the fourth official.
Just before half-time a Cowie corner was looped over to Ross Tokely at the back post but the towering full backs header was poorly directed and bounced well wide of the right hand upright to send the teams back to the dressing room with the hosts one up.
Half Time 1-0
The second half saw another highly controversial moment when Caley Thistle looked to have been denied a clear penalty. Adam Rooney cut in from the right flank and seemed to have been brought down by Gerard Aafjes in the box only for Somers, well placed to make a call, to judge that the Dutchman had got a foot to the ball and wave play on. The decision bewildered the Inverness players and fans and subsequent television replays have shown that the referee should have made the award. It will surely be a while before Somers is given a high profile match again.
Falkirk almost doubled their advantage just before the hour mark when Scotland internationalist Darren Barr hit the post from close range after a good ball from McCann.
Just after the hour mark Craig Brewster reshuffled his pack, bringing on Barry Wilson and Andy Barrowman for Roy McBain and Garry Wood.
Caley Thistle had most of the play in the second half but despite this the performance from the Highland side seemed to lack vigour and forcefulness. Too often as the game limped towards its conclusion the visitors aimed long high balls towards strikers who couldn’t capitalise. The Falkirk back line relished this tactic, winning the vast majority of balls in the air. Despite feeling they had been the victims of an injustice, the Caley Jags players were not able to raise their ire and produce the variation or invention to unpick the home defence. Rooney almost got on the end of a cross late in the game but there were no clear cut chances.
Falkirk are often complimented for their good passing and they played keep-ball to good effect late in the game, with the introduction of canny Russell Latapy helping in this regard. The three minutes of injury time passed with no real impact from Caley Jags.
Full Time 1-0
Craig Brewster was vocal post-match about the decisions to allow the Falkirk goal and not to award Inverness a penalty in the second half. Both decisions looked to have been questionable but the Inverness side have to shoulder the blame for failure to progress. During the first half there were numerous opportunities to score which were wasted and in the second half, for all their possession, the Jags failed to vary the play or produce anything approaching a flash of inspiration to create chances.
This game is the fourth in a row that the Caley Jags have lost by a single goal. All of these performances have had positive aspects to them, last night’s first half showing was impressive in parts and players like Jamie Duff and Russell Duncan can be pleased with their individual displays. However, this Caley Jags side needs to show the steadfast nature of previous season’s and start picking up points where perhaps they aren’t deserved and to introduce more of a cutting edge to the team. Good performances with one goal defeats are not enough, especially with a fixture against Rangers at Ibrox looming.

Falkirk v Inverness CT Cup Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Inverness Caley Thistle go into their fourth league cup semi-final on the back of three straight 2-1 defeats in the SPL. The losses to Dundee Utd, Celtic and Motherwell have raised relegation fears at the Caledonian Stadium and fans will be hoping that the CIS Cup offers some relief from a torrid period of league form. Caley haven't had an easy path to the quarter finals, only overcoming Second Division Arbroath on penalties and First Division Morton after extra time. Both ties were played away from home and with relatively experimental line ups. Falkirk have advanced thanks to a 3-1 away win over Raith Rovers and a 2-1 home triumph over Queen of the South.
FALKIRK v INVERNESS CT
Falkirk Stadium, Falkirk
Tuesday 28th October, 7:45pm
In the league Falkirk have had a faltering start to the season. After a promising campaign last time out when John Hughes' much admired young side were pipped to a top six spot by Aberdeen.
The Bairns have added experience to their playing pool, with Lee Bullen, Jackie McNamara, Steve Lovell and Neil McCann coming into the club. Many saw these players as the bridge to the top six for Falkirk and it was a surprise when Hughes' side lost their first four games of the season, culminating in a home loss to the Jags at the end of August.
Since then Falkirk have rallied, winning three league games to pull themselves off the foot of the table. They will approach the tie with confidence and will be keen for the opportunity to set right their last runin this tournament when they were beaten 3-0 in the 2007 semi-finals by a Steven Naismith inspired Kilmarnock.
Past Meetings
Inverness Caledonian Thistle have played Falkirk more times than any other side since the Jags election to the SFL in 1994. Of the 34 contests Falkirk have won 17, Caley Thistle ten and there have been seven draws. The only cup tie meeting between the sides came in the league cup in season 2006/07 and saw Charlie Christie's side eliminated 1-0 in a low key tie. The goal was scored by Anthony Stokes, the then Arsenal youth team player, who took Scottish football by storm during his three month stint at the Falkirk Stadium. The goal that night was his first for Falkirk and the first of six he scored in three games against Caley Thistle, including a hat-trick in his farewell match that December.
Both sides were involved in some great tussles during their time in the SFL First Division. In the final few seasons spent in the division both sides were challenging for the title and the games had a great deal at stake. Strangely in Caley Jag's title winning season Falkirk took ten points from twelve from the eventual champions. John Robertson's glory season started off with a Russell Latapy-inspired defeat to Falkirk at Stenhousmuirs Ochilview with few of the travelling fans predicting the silverware that was to follow that day.
The season before that saw Falkirk win the title but denied promotion due to their failure to meet the then SPL requirements for the 10,000 capacity seated stadium. Caley Thistle maintained a fight through the season until a top of the table clash on the 8th of February (a significant date for Caley fans) when Falkirk triumphed 4-3 in the Highlands. Despite taking a 2-0 first half lead through Barry Robson and Dennis Wyness, Caley were pegged back by half-time thanks to a goal from Collin Samuel and the familiar sight of Owen Coyle bagging a goal against the Jags. Although John Robertson's men retook the lead in the second half through Paul Ritchie, Coyle bagged two more goals to seal a hat-trick and a fantastic win for the Bairns.
Players To Watch
Five Caley Thistle players remain in the first team squad from that game and it is these more experienced campaigners that Craig Brewster will look to tomorrow night. Caley Thistle have been unlucky in the last few weeks with poor refereeing (Adam Rooney's goal disallowed wrongly at Tannadice) and superb goalkeeping (Artur Boruc's saves from Garry Wood and Dougie Imrie) costing the Jags some morale boosting results. With such a young squad the Highlanders could have allow heads to drop and it is the old guard of Tokely, Duncan, Munro and McBain who must push the younger players on and ensure that they stay fully focussed. The younger and less experienced players have shown in flashes what they can do at points this season (Rooney's great strike last weekend, Imrie's man of the match display against Celtic) and a combination of measured experience and the vigour of youth is what this Caley Jags squad need to overcome a tough cup tie.
In the Falkirk line up, young Scott Arfield burst onto the SPL scene last term and has continued his good play this season. The 19 year old scored his first senior goal at Caledonian Stadium and already has four goals from midfield so far this campaign. International recognition has come with a call up to the Scotland Under 21s and rumours of interest from the Premiership will continue to drive this young talent.
Prediction
After three difficult games it's hard to see Caley Thistle prevailing easily against a Falkirk side that have shown character and class to rally back from an appalling start to the season. Despite this the Jags have shown real guts in this competition to go to two difficult lower league venues and prevail in back-and-forth matches. The travelling Caley fans will have to hope that they will be able to repeat the spirited performance given in August at this venue as on current form the likely winners look to be in navy blue.

Inverness CT 1-2 Motherwell - Report

Well master the weather

Conditions at Tulloch Caledonian Stadium weren't great with high winds and rain, meaning that this is a game where results were going to come from playing the ball on the deck.
Caley Thistle did just that when a ball was fed through to Rooney early in the second half and he remained composed to slot it home and open the scoring.
Motherwell dragged themselves back in to the game on 69 when a defensive error allowed Porter to draw things level.  They then went on to take the lead from a free-kick by Malcolm on 83 minutes and despite the best efforts of ICT in the closing minutes they clock up yet another home defeat.

It's quite hard to work out how we lost that game. We were very comfortable in the first half, and should have gone in ahead.
We started the second half very brightly and Rooney took his chance superbly. We had another great chance straight after that, but Rooney and Wood got in each others way......and then it was all downhill.
Motherwell certainly picked up when they made the changes, but we helped them out by sitting so deep it was almost inevitable they'd draw level.
I've no idea why Rooney was taken off either, Wood was awful today, and seemed the obvious choice for replacing. The other subs were fine, Blackie looked like he'd injured his shoulder, and Duncan was just mince.
We seem very wasteful/hesitant in front of goal in every game. Rooney looks the only one of our strikers capable of getting us a few goals at the moment so Brewster should just stop messing about with our attacking options, and just play Rooney on his own, or Rooney +1.
Disappointing result today, we should've won. I'm getting a wee bit concerned that these kind of results could come back to haunt us at the end of the season. Then again, if we were playing ***** I'd be more worried, but I don't actually think we're playing that badly. We seem to have a habit of switching off for periods during games though, and we're getting punished for this.
