Dundee Utd 1-1 Inverness CT - Report

Tannadice point as Duncan sees Red

Eric Odhiambo scored for the Caley Jags in 16 minutes but Dundee United defender Lee Wilkie scored a deflected shot in 79 minutes to grab a share of the points.
Russell Duncan was red carded in 71 minutes after "taking one for the team". Sandaza broke away and the ref adjudged Duncan to have denied a goalscoring opportunity and a straight red was shown. The Caley Jags then had to hold out under some intense pressure from United but it remained 1-1 and Terry Butcher remains undefeated as Caley Thistle manager...

Overview from Site:
An excellent point that i would have taken before the game. This game was massively important in keeping the unbeaten run going, and keeping everyone focussed on survival. The players seem to have responded to this and from what i have heard played well and manager to hold on for a point when it looked very likely United (who are without a doubt the 3rd best team in Scotland) would go on to win it.
Looking at the after-match footage the players and big Tel looked delighted with a point, was there a big support??
I hope the woodwork fans climb out for the Hibs game, time to hype this one up hugely to tempt them off their armchairs.
Delighted with Eric Odhiambo, good to see him get a goal especially against Utd.
One final word: Russell Duncan is an absolute hero who is working his socks off and playing with his heart on his sleeve. In my opinion one of the best players we have at the club who should get more praise. He reads the game and intercepts excellently. Right now, he has really started showing how much he wants us to stay up, along with Dougie. Anyone who thinks we should punt a long-serving player such as Duncan is off their heads.
Caley Stan added:
Very good game. We had loads of fighting spirit and looked dangerous on the break but played very little football.
United pumped ball after ball into our box but we kept dealing with them. In the 10 minutes leading up to the sending off we were threatening to score a second goal and if Imrie had used the ball more intelligently then we would've had one long before that. It's difficult to criticise Dougie though. His passion is incredible and he has made himself the focal point of this team. If him and Eric can build a better understanding then we could see the return of great counter-attacking away days.
Russell Duncan was my man of the match. In the first half he was winning everything and playing the simple pass afterwards. He is hugely important in away games and did what he had to do after Lionel's mistake.
We've got loads of hope and belief under the new regime - the next step is to convert that into home wins.
Final word from Alternative Maryhill, our resident Caley Jags analyst.

Guess it's a sign of how much Butcher has improved our confidence that I came away yesterday feeling a bit disappointed about us only getting a point. Fair result, but after an hour or so I was daring to hope. Another really spirited performance, though. Duncan, as many have already mentioned, had an excellent first half in particular. Black stood out in the second and covered Duncan's absence really well when Duncan was sent off. I like the look of Imrie and Odhiambo up front - load of pace and effort and a little skill too, although as someone said earlier, they still need to build a better understanding. The defence fought for everything and apart from the goal coped reasonably well with a fair bit of pressure. Actually felt Munro was more commanding than Mihadjuks today, but there's no doubt they're the best CB partnership we've had in a couple of seasons. Esson makes a big difference too - he may have fumbled for the goal but he got everything else. I suspect opponents feel far more intimidated playing against him than they do against Fraser. Zadi made a few more good interceptions and strong clearing headers, and although there was also a fair bit of wild slashing at the ball as the second half went on, I think that overall this back four clears its lines far more effectively than the previous line-up where was Hastings at LB and Rosscoe seemed to push forward more. As for the wider players, Foran won a lot in the air, used the ball well and tracked back well, without really imposing himself as a creative force, while Proctor was probably our quietest player without doing anything wrong.
Although I'd like to see a little more creativity from the midfield, I think Butcher's strategy of retaining a successful line-up is the right one. Two changes will be enforced on him next week - I'm sure he'll take the opportunity to give Kerr his chance, and while I'd like to see Vigurs get the other place, I wouldn't be surprised if Butcher opted for the experience of McBain. A few winnable games coming up, and if we keep up yesterday's attitude and get a little more sharpness into the team going forward, we'll start picking up points.

Quarter Final Draw

Teaser Paragraph:
Caley Thistle have been drawn against Falkirk in the Quarter Final of the Homecoming Scottish Cup
Both clubs are struggling at the foot of the SPL table and the stats between them dont show any advantage to either side with the 14 SPL meetings between the sides showing 6 wins apiece and two draws.

When both sides were in the SFL, Falkirk had the edge, winning 10 of the 20 meetings between the sides compared to Caley Thistle's 4 wins. There were six draws.
Crucially, the only two cup meetings between the sides - both in the League Cup - have ended in 1-0 Falkirk victories. According to the ICT official website, the tie will take place on Saturday 7th March.
Holders Rangers still have to get past Forfar, but if they do will face Hamilton Accies at Ibrox. Celtic will face Motherwell or St Mirren, and in the other tie, Airdrie Utd or Dunfermline will face Aberdeen or East Fife.

Inverness CT 2-0 Kilmarnock - Scottish Cup

Cup of Joy

Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC secured a place in the Quarter Finals of the Homecoming Scottish Cup with a 2-0 victory at home against Kilmarnock FC.
A first half goal for Centre Back Pavels Mihadjuks and a wonder strike from substitute Adam Rooney were enough to win the day, but Kilmarnock might have left feeling a little hard done by after the referee overturned a decision to give them a penalty and instead awarded a free kick on the outside of the box.
Caley Jags players and fans will be delighted at witnessing the second clean sheet in a row and it's back to league business next week with an away match against Dundee Utd.

Referee  I Brines Attendance  2578 Man of the Match  Dougie Imrie  From site:
Not classic stuff. First half was good up and at em work, with Odhiambo shining early on, but faded from the game. Imrie did not replicate last weeks classic, and nothing seemed to work for him, though he ran hard enough. Rooney seemed mia a few times going forward, perhaps he forgot what he was there for. Took his goal very well from a telling pass from Proctor, but really it was an extra man goal.
Esson was solid, and the defence seem to work well together. Lionel was my MOM both for his stopping and his moving forward. The ball seemed to go to him from the midfield quite a lot and he usually found something good with his passes. Tokes on the other hand didn't seem to go forward as much, not till later.
Duncan had a good game as did Foran. Missed a sitter though. Black seemed a bit quiet, but contributed sporadically.
All in all a good day, Terry is working with the side and he will get better and better performances out of his squad. A couple of wins like that in the league and all bets are off. In terms of contracts and the new chaps, get Pavels and Odhiambo tied up asap!

January Transfer Summary

Teaser Paragraph:
If a weeks a long time in politics then a month must be an eternity in football...that's certainly how it must have felt for the fans of Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
Many will have been delighted to see the back of Craig Brewster, and I doubt we'll ever know the real reason he was allowed to sign 4 players shortly before being given the heave-ho from Tulloch Caledonian Stadium.
On the plus side, Terry Butcher was appointed to replace him and despite having less than a week left of the window he's made 3 signings which could prove vital to our survival.
Andrew Fraser gives us the low downs on the ins and outs at ICT....one of the busiest teams in the country in the January 2009 window.
The transfer window slammed shut at 5pm on Monday, with Inverness CT bringing in a total of 7 players during the month of January. They also sacked the management team who brought in the first 4 players and brought a new management team who then brought 3 players in. Here is a low down on the moves in January.
PERSONNEL IN
Filipe Morais (from Hibernian): The Portuguese midfielder signed for Inverness on the 8th of January from Hibernian after being released from his contract. Initially it was thought it would be a loan deal for the player, but it was later revealed Caley Thistle had actually signed Filipe on a 6 month deal. A product of the Chelsea youth system, he has had spells with MK Dons and Milwall before moving to St Johnstone on loan. He then moved to Hibernian on the 30th August 2007 where he made around 35 appearances. Ironically his last SPL game for Hibernian was against Inverness on the 23rd August which ended in 1-1. He made his amazing debut against Partick in the cup where he scored 2 goals and got the man of the match award. He played the next week away to Hamilton where unfortunately he did not find the net. He has been injured recently but looking to get back into contention soon. He has been given the famous no 7 shirt which Barry Wilson wore.
Thierry Gatheussi (from Hibernian): The Cameroon defender joined the club alongside Morais from Hibernian on the 8th of January. Signed for Hibs at the same time as Filipe and made over 20 appearances for the club. He has not featured this season for Hibs but came on as a substitute for ICT for his debut on the 10th of January. He started his first game for the club away to Hearts at the end of the month but was taken off injured after only 18 mins. Could be a useful addition to the squad and has been given the no 19 jersey. On a 6 month deal as well.
Pavels Mihadjuks (Ventspils): A rather surprise signing from Caley Thistle, but Brewster had managed to find a suitable centre back to add to the leaky defence. Pavels is a 28 year old Latvian defender who has suited into the ICT back 4 with the minimum of fuss. Made his debut against Partick in the cup and has since kept his place in the squad. Pavels scored his first goal for the club away to Hearts in the 3-2 defeat. He almost scored against Celtic at the weekend as well, but Boruc saved well on that occasion. Looks the player to replace Darren Dods, and hopefully Butcher can extend his 6 month deal beyond this season. Has been given the no 18 shirt which if I remember correctly, was the number Niculae had.
Richie Byrne (Oldham): The Irish defender was the last signing before Brewster was sacked as manager. Byrne previously had spells with Dunfermline and Aberdeen before moving down south. It did not work out for him at Aberdeen or down south with Oldham due to his persistent injuries. Brewster however was willing to give Richie a 6 month deal to try and prove his fitness. So far he has not featured in any games, but should hopefully get a chance during February. Featured in the reserve game on the 3rd February away to Kilmarnock.
Terry Butcher (manager): After the sacking of Craig Brewster in his second stint in charge, several experienced names were thrown into the hat to become new manager. John Robertson was the first name linked, but due to the experience Butcher offered, Robbo was not the No. 1 favourite. It is understood however if Butcher had declined the offer, Robbo was ready to step into the job. Terry Butcher’s name was linked with the club very early on, but it seemed he already had commitments that he was attached to. Other names mentioned were Ossie Ardilies who was quoted as saying he was interested in the job, Archie Knox appeared to be a favourite at one stage, Chris Sutton was keen on the job but at the end of the day, on the 27th January; Terry Butcher was announced as manager. After a successful spell with Motherwell it was decided he was the man for the job. Terry will continue with his Scotland assistant role but has given up his Setanta job. He has signed an 18 month contract along with his assistant Malpas.
Maurice Malpas (assistant-manager): After Terry Butcher was announced as manager, he wasted no time in bringing in his assistant from his spell with Motherwell. After Butcher left for Sydney, Malpas went onto manage Motherwell, but was eventually sacked and went down south to manage Swindon Town which unfortunately did not work either. He is happy to be back in football again, and delighted to be working alongside Butcher again.
Eric Odhiambo (Leicester City): The first signing of the new manager Terry Butcher, the English striker has previously had a loan spell in the SPL with Dundee Utd last season. He has signed on a 6 month deal after being released from Leicester City for free. He has actually never scored at professional level but almost did when he came on as a substitute on Sunday against Celtic with 5 mins to go. Butcher previously managed Brentford, where Eric was on loan at previously this season. He has been given the no 26 jersey.
Richie Foran (Southend): The club have been crying out for a striker who knows the way to goal in the SPL, and Foran might just be what we are looking for. Foran is best remembered for his time under Butcher at Motherwell where he scored over 20 goals in 90 league appearances (some of these as a sub). He has had loan spells at Darlington this season where he has also managed to get some goals before moving up to the Highlands. He made his debut on Sunday against Celtic and had the ball in the back of the net but unfortunately was a fraction offside. The no 25 could be the man we need to score goals and if the Irishman can find his SPL form again then this could help move the club off the bottom of the table.
Brian Kerr (un-attached): Butcher’s third and final signing of the transfer window was ex-Motherwell and Hibernian player Brian Kerr. Brian was released from Hibernian earlier this season. He already has 3 Scotland caps and moved to Motherwell in 2004, after rejecting Borrusia Dortmund. He signed for Hibs in 2007 but once Mixu arrived as manager, he was left out of the first team picture and was later released. Featured in the reserve game against Kilmarnock on Tuesday and is a vital contribution to the midfield now that Don Cowie has left. His experience would help the club survive relegation.
PERSONNEL OUT
Barry Wilson (Queen of the South): Barry was a hero at ICT and had recently had his testimonial year at the club, after having been at the club for a total of 10 years during his 2 spells. Brewster decided that he was no longer required even though he was looking for experience in his squad!! Gordon Chisholm was quick to sign Wilson and he has already looked the part scoring a couple of goals. Barry was linked in some papers as having a role in a new management team, but it did not materialise and he will continue in the 1st division until the summer at least.
Craig Brewster (manager): Brewster was sacked in the middle of January after a run of 8 consecutive SPL defeats which the club deemed not good enough. Even though he was allowed to bring in 4 players before he was relieved of his duties, the club were bottom of the league and things were not looking bright. After a 1-0 defeat to Hamilton, the board decided enough was enough and for the first time in the club’s history they sacked a manager. This was Brewster’s second spell at the club, but it just didn’t go to plan this time around. I hope Brewster returns to management in the future, but at the moment it looks like he might be playing in the 3rd division for the rest of the season.
Malcolm Thomson (assistant manager): No sooner had Brewster been sacked but Malky was also shown the door straight away. Normally if a manager is sacked, the assistant would take over until the board decided what to do, but not this time as they were both sacked at the same time. Before moving to Inverness for a second time, Malcolm had a spell with Chester City with Bobby Williamson, but jumped at the chance to re-join Caley Thistle with Brewster. I wish both Brewster and Thomson the best of luck in the future.
Rory McAllister (Brechin City): Signed from Aberdeen when he was under 19, Rory never really got going at ICT, and the club decided enough was enough and released him from his contract. Rory was giving chances but failed to perform in the first team, even though he could bang them in for the reserves no problem. Has moved to 2nd division side Brechin to try and re-ignite his career.
Don Cowie (Watford): Cowie had previously signed a pre-contract agreement with Watford last week but it seemed Inverness would be keeping him until the summer. Don however was keen to move South and so negotiations and ICT accepted a bid somewhere between £20k and £120K for the player to move now. He missed the game against Celtic so his last game was against Hearts at Tynecastle. Had a great first season at the club and his work rate is excellent. Could feature against Chelsea at the weekend!! Even though he has moved south he hasn’t escaped a relegation battle as Watford are currently in one as well!!
So January had 7 players in, a new manager and a new assistant. Out went 3 players, and a manager and an assistant. The board have invested money into wages for the experienced new players and let’s hope they have chosen the right ones to keep our SPL hopes alive. A busy transfer window and after looking at the players we have signed, I feel pretty confident that we have a good chance of getting some win on the board and moving up the table.

Inverness CT 0-0 Celtic - Report

New manager makes his point

Other results hadn't done us any favours this weekend with the 6 teams above us all picking up points which made it just that little bit more important that we got something from todays game.
A couple of injuries, players being a little short on match fitness and the late withdrawal of Don Cowie meant that the new manager, Terry Butcher, had his work cut out in assembling a team to face Celtic.
But assemble a team he did, and they went out and took the fight to the visitors.  At other times we might have rued the missed opportunities, but to come away with a hard fought for and well deserved draw and to do so with a certain amount of style will leave most Inverness Caledonian Thistle Fans more than happy.
We've stopped the rot, and now comes the challenge of clocking up the wins and reeling in Falkirk.

thought from the site:
We saw the fight and spirit last week....we added to that this week with some nice, dare I say it, intelligent football. Butcher hit with a late blow in having the Board pull Cowie from under his feet and injuries/fitness meant he didn't have his full arsenal at his disposal, but he put together a starting 11 that worked well and (for the most part) complimented each other.
If we can go out and put on a performance like that with a weakened squad then I'm thoroughly looking forward to what we can do as players start to come back and get fit.
Message to the Club Board.......THAT's what we've been crying out for during most of the season. That's why we fans have been on your case. You almost fecked things up today with messing about on the Cowie situation, so I'm not sure how much you've learned, but we will survive despite you...not because of you.
Bring on the Arabs!!!

Inverness CT v Celtic Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Every jobless manager in the UK; a few 1st division managers; 2 previous managers; a player who left us this month; and an Argentinian!! How did the board manage to narrow it down to just 1??
Firstly let me congratulate Terry Butcher and Maurice Malpas on successfully getting the job as the new management team of Inverness Caledonian Thistle. I believe this is a fantastic appointment for the club, considering we have never gone for the experienced manager before. I wish them both well in their new jobs and hope they can keep SPL in the Highlands past the summer.
The task facing them is big, but not impossible. The players are there, and with Butcher taking our January players in to a total of 6 on Friday, we can be even more confident of getting more points on the board and moving up the table. Brewster’s new signings of Morais, Byrne, Midhadjuks and Gathuessi have been added to by Butcher already with the signings of Richie Foran from Southend and Eric Odhiambo from Leicester City. Both are attacking players and will hopefully add some much needed goals for ICT. With Brian Kerr training with the squad at the moment, and another few names mentioned in the press, who knows how many we will add before the window slams shut at the beginning of February.
So, another management change, but it was completely different to the other management changes we have add. All the other new managers have come into a club which is doing well and has just lost a manager because the club was doing so well. There job was to continue the excellent progress the club was making. Terry Butcher has been appointed after the first ever sacking of a Caley Thistle manager; and its up to him to pick up the pieces and improve our very woeful home form. No better way to start than Celtic then!!
Lets give the new management team and the players the support they deserve to push us up the league.

INVERNESS CT v CELTIC
Tulloch Caledonian Stadium
Sunday 1st February, 2:00pm
PAST MEETINGS
The teams have played a total of 18 times (14 League, 4 Cup) with 54 goals (18 Inverness CT, 36 Celtic) between them.
Inverness CT: 3 wins (1 League, 2 Cup) Draws: 2 (2 League, 0 Cup) Celtic: 13 wins (11 League, 2 Cup)
THE TWO FAMOUS NIGHTS 08/02/2000 (Scottish Cup 3rd Round) Celtic 1-3 INVERNESS CT:
This game will always be remembered for all Inverness fans as this is regarded as the biggest result of Caley Thistle’s history so far. The original game was postponed due to apart of the roof falling off. In 16 minutes Barry Wilson headed in Paul Sheerin’s cross to the home fans shock. Mark Burchill scored a minute later but Bobby Mann restored the lead (some people say it was an own goal, but I call it Bobby’s goal!!). 10 minutes into the second half Paul Sheerin slotted home a penalty to the travelling fans delight. Steve Patterson was quoted as saying- “I think this is the moment Inverness arrived in Scottish football”. It sure was with the headline from the Sun reading “Super Caley Go Ballistic, Celtic Are Atrocious!!!!!!!”.
The team for Inverness was as follows- Calder, Teasdale, Golabek, Mann, McCulloch, Hastings, Sheerin, Tokely (Byers 89), Wilson (Glancy 87), Christie and Wyness (Bavidge 79).
23/03/2003 (Scottish Cup Quarter-Final) INVERNESS CT 1-0 Celtic:
Was lighting going to strike twice? It certainly was as even though Celtic had just beaten Liverpool, Inverness always believed they could do it. Even Bobby Mann mentioned before the game that he thought there would be another Highland Fling!! The only goal of the game was when Richie Hart pulled the ball across for Dennis Wyness to slot home. The second half seemed to last a life-time but eventually John Robertson had copied the heights of Steve Patterson. Two people’s performances I want to mention are Stuart McCaffrey for marking Larsson sensationally well and Mark Brown for making good saves and getting the Man of the Match.
TEAM FACTS
All League meetings between the teams have taken place in the SPL. Inverness CT won their first league game against Celtic last season thanks to a sensational game on the 16th December 2007. After going 2 goals down in quick succession, Rankin, Proctor and Cowie turned the game around and even with an extra man advantage (Proctor sending off) Celtic still couldn’t get anything from the game. This seasons results so far: Inverness CT 1-2 Celtic, Celtic 1-0 Inverness CT Inverness CT have lost 5 times out of 9 to Celtic at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium in the 9 matches played in Inverness. Inverness have won 2, drawn 2 and lost 5. Inverness CT have been poor at home in the league this season, playing a total of 11 games and winning just 1 against Kilmarnock, drawing 2 and losing a disappointing 8. Sadly only 9 goals in 11 games is less than a goal a game. Celtic have the best away record in the SPL also playing 11 games they have won 8 times, drawn 1 and lost 2. 23 goals in 11 games is more than 2 a game. Inverness CT have lost their last 8 consecutive games in the SPL. Celtic lost their last away game in Aberdeen. This fixture produces an average of 3 goals per game. TEAM NEWS
Inverness CT: This weekend sees the first game under the new management regime and Butcher was quick to add to his squad. Already Foran and Odhiambo have been added and both are in contention for this weekend’s game. However we are nursing a few injuries ahead of the game and unfortunately Hastings and Gatheussi are injured and Roy McBain is suspended which leaves the left back slot open. It will be interesting to see who we put in that position. Morais is struggling to be fit after returning to training on Thursday after a short spell on the sidelines. Celtic: Strachan also added to his squad with the man who helped Celtic reach the CIS Cup Final on Wednesday. Willo Flood missed Dundee Utd’s 12 penalty during the amazing penalty shoot out in midweek and meant Celtic moved through to the final. Flood will not be able to play in the tie as he is cup-tied but could play at the weekend. Stephen McManus is close to fitness again after missing the Dundee Utd game with an inflamed knee.

Terry Butcher - New Inverness Manager

Teaser Paragraph:
Blood, Sweat and Tears….that’s what some believe it’s going to take to dig Inverness Caledonian Thistle out of the current hole they find themselves in as they sit adrift at the bottom of the SPL with only Falkirk still within immediate touching distance. The Inverness Board are still to confirm the appointment of Terry Butcher, but you’d have to be going around with your eyes shut and your fingers in your ears this morning if you were to be in any doubt that it’s a done deal.  With word that Butcher travelled back to London last night then we can only imagine the delay in the official announcement is his return to Inverness again this afternoon so he can be properly paraded in front of the press and cameras.
Terence Ian Butcher, born in Singapore on the 28th of December 1958 and with 77 England caps behind him will be the next ICT manager. At six foot four inches, Terry was an uncompromising centre half and made his name playing for Ipswich Town from 1976 to 1986 where his displays caught the eye of then England manager Ron Greenwood. Butcher won the UEFA cup with Ipswich in 1981 with Bobby Robson as manager. In 1986 Butcher joined Glasgow Rangers and during his spell at Ibrox as captain, Rangers won three league titles and two Scottish Cups. In 1987 he suffered a broken leg which ruled him out of the European Championships. His next injury was the one that saw his blood stained and bandaged head plastered all over the tabloids, but his courage was not in doubt as he played on despite the stitches and severity of the damage. He finished the game against Sweden battered, bruised and covered in blood. This typified Butchers spirit and gained him hero status amongst the England support. His managerial career began at Coventry City, when he became player manager at the tender age of 32, the youngest manager in the football leagues. Despite a promising start by Butcher to his first management job, he parted company with Coventry after just over two years. His next appointment was at Sunderland, where survival was achieved, but once again he was sacked with Sunderland still at the wrong end of the league. In October 2001 he became assistant to Eric Black at Motherwell and eventually took over the manager’s post as Motherwell struggled financially. Big Terry has been credited by many for the way he guided Motherwell through a difficult period and built his own team, which reached the Scottish League Cup final in 2005. He had an unsuccessful period as manager down under at Sydney FC, but rumour has it some sections of the Sydney support were not in favour of an outsider such as Butcher being appointed. He was sacked in 2007. A brief spell as assistant coach at Partick Thistle ensued, before heading back to England to manage Brentford, but this also ended in a sacking after a poor run including five wins in twenty three matches. Sounds familiar to ICT fans. More recently, Butcher has been a pundit for Setanta and is the current Scotland assistant manager. Butcher is a well respected figure in the game, although his success at management level would appear to have been restricted to Scotland.
It is uncertain at this time whether or not Butcher will continue in his Scotland and Setanta rolls whilst managing Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC.
