Hearts 3-2 Inverness CT - Report

Strange Brew

What to expect this week was anyone's guess. Would ICT perform well now that Brewster was gone? Would the players be distracted by the managerial names being thrown around? or would it be more of the same dross that has seen the side lose the last seven games?
In 39 minutes David Obua scored and it was a case of "here we go again" .... However, a 56th minute Pavels Mihadjuks header, his first goal for the club, reinvigorated the Caley Thistle side and they gave as good as they got. Obua scored again in 59 minutes but once again Caley Thistle fought back, this time with Imrie scoring what commentators described as one of the best free kicks ever seen at Tynecastle a couple of minutes before the end. Unfortunately, Hearts made use of their extra man advantage and went straight up the park and grabbed the winner. A defeat it might be, but this was a defeat that felt like the players were battling hard and giving everything they could .... in contrast to the last seven games.

Caley Thistle suffered heartbreak at Tynecastle on Saturday as they went down 3-2 to Hearts, despite a valiant effort from the managerless Highlanders. After twice equalising Caley Jags slumped to an eighth straight league defeat when they were undone by a Kingston goal in the dying minutes. Despite the sickening nature of the loss, many Caley fans left Gorgie with renewed hope for the relegation fight, a result of the battling nature of the performance against a Hearts side pushing for third spot. Caretaker boss John Docherty made several changes to the ICT line up, with Richard Hastings, Filipe Morais and Andy Barrowman all dropping from the side and Thierry Gathuessi, Dougie Imrie and Garry Wood coming in. Ross Tokely moved into midfield, making his first start in the middle of the park since a 1-0 home defeat by Ayr United in 2003. Cameroon international Gathuessi slotted in at right back, while Don Cowie and Dougie Imrie offered attacking support to Wood from midfield. Before kick off a minutes silence was impeccable observed minutes silence in honour of three former Hearts players, including Alfie Conn. The match began slowly with Caley Thistle settling into their reshaped formation. There were few chances and the main talking point was the withdrawal of Thierry Gathuessi, who pulled up chasing a ball down the right flank after 20 minutes and was replaced by David Proctor, who looked more comfortable at full back than during his recent sojourn in the centre. Andy Driver has been the subject of transfer speculation this window and any watching scouts would have been impressed with the young Englishman’s delivery midway through the first half. Driver whipped a dangerous ball across goal, which only a desperate interception from Grant Munro kept from reaching Christian Nade. Ryan Esson had to look lively to prevent an own goal. A few minutes later Caley were presented with a golden opportunity to open the scoring. A free kick on the left hand side of the Hearts penalty box was delivered perfectly into the area by Don Cowie but the incoming Dougie Imrie directed his header wide of the post. Imrie, who had a hopeful penalty appeal turned down early in the game, should have done better with the chance and the former Clyde man will be disappointed that his effort failed to hit the target. Shortly afterwards another great chance was spurned by Caley Thistle. A long ball up the park from Grant Munro was kept in play by Don Cowie, who fed Imrie. Imrie managed to find Ian Vigurs who in turn slotted a ball through for Garry Wood. The ex-Elgin City forward couldn’t set himself correctly and his backheeled effort flew wide of the post. Caley Thistle were looking more confident at this point than had been the case in recent matches. However, none of the chances were taken and the home side meted out punishment by seizing the lead in the 39th minute. Andy Driver sent in a cross to the box and Ugandan midfielder David Obua beat Ryan Esson in the air to nod the ball into the net. The Caley Thistle players protested vehemently to the referee that Obua had fouled Esson but their incantations fell on deaf ears. With the benefit of television replays we can see that Esson had not caught the ball and the goal was lawful. The most pertinent point was that once again defensive failures cost the side dear: Proctor, should have prevented the cross being delivered and McBain failed to track Obua’s run. As it is, the home side went into the interval with a 1-0 advantage. There were no changes to either side’s line up at half-time but Inverness emerged from the dressing rooms with a clear sense of purpose and drive. The midfield, including an impressive Ross Tokely, managed to exercise a degree of control over the game and the livewire pair of Cowie and Imrie stepped up in the second half to give excellent performances. It was Imrie who won a free kick wide on the left just before the hour mark and Cowie who’s pinpoint delivery was bulleted into the net by Latvian centre-half Pavels Mihadjuks. If the recent arrival was concerned that the departure of Craig Brewster could endanger his future at the club he didn’t show it – this was a superb goal, an unstoppable arrowed header past McDonald. The side took a great fillip from equalising and Ross Tokely spurned a great chance to give the Highlanders the lead when Cowie and Imrie’s well worked short corner was cut back to him. Sadly for the club stalwart his effort was sliced over the bar. The sense of fight and spirit from the red and blue XI was palpable and the visiting support added their collective voice to urge the side on. With just over twenty minutes to go Hearts won a penalty in what was a turning point in the match. Driver cut inside from the right and went down under pressure from Roy McBain. Steve Conroy pointed to the spot, to the rage of the visitors. With the benefit of television replays it’s clear that Driver went down easily after being pressured on the ball but McBain’s complaints earned him a yellow card. Michael Stewart took the spot kick, not before Dougie Imrie had employed some gamesmanship by knocking the ball off the spot, but his driven effort was brilliantly stopped by Ryan Esson, who stretched down to his right to push the ball past the post. This was Esson’s second penalty save of the season, after another excellent save against Hibs in November. The joy of this occasion was tempered by the sending off of Roy McBain, who had gestured at the linesman in the aftermath of the penalty save. Conroy took a dim view to this and McBain received his marching orders, necessitating a reshuffle with Grant Munro shifting to left-back. Less than ten minutes later Munro’s lack of pace was exposed as Driver strode past him before sending a cross to the far post, where David Obua outmuscled David Proctor to power home a header. From a Caley Thistle perspective this goal again was preventable but the absence of a recognised left back was a major factor. The match seemed to be heading towards a 2-1 home win when the final act in a dramatic second half unfolded in the dying seconds. Obua clumsily took down Dougie Imrie 35 yards from goal. The ex Junior wide man dusted himself off before crashing in a glorious free kick that thundered off the crossbar and into the net. The equaliser was the cue for wild celebrations among the players and travelling support, with all and sundry clearly believing a point had been earned. However, straight from the restart Andy Driver was played in and his cut back was tapped home by Larry Kingston. The late blow sucked the life out of the Caley players, who must have wondered what they have to do to earn a point at the moment. As the fans filtered out of the ground there was a sense of disbelief among the faithful but also a feeling that the fighting spirit of old seemed to have returned to the ICT side. The togetherness of the squad, the good passing and incisive movement all were drastic improvements on previous performances and even the new formation, with Ross Tokely showing he can add some physical presence to the midfield worked well. If the qualities displayed by the side in this match can be carried forward, and the lingering weaknesses eliminated, then this Caley Thistle side is well capable of saving itself from relegation.

Boardroom Banter - Issue 03

Teaser Paragraph:
{xtypo_dropcap}W{/xtypo_dropcap}elcome to the January 2009 issue of Boardroom Banter, the monthly report direct from club officials to you the fans. In this month's issue we have some follow up to questions that arose from Issues one and two as well as answers to many new questions posed by fans for this issue. Keep the questions coming, so we can try and do our bit to try and recapture some of the spirit of openness and camaraderie that existed as Inverness Caledonian Thistle were climbing the leagues. {slide=Item 01: Follow up from previous issues}
{tab=Strips} A few questions were asked about strips
Gringo Jnr: I designed a strip for the club a few years ago. I showed these to Scotty and my dad before posting them off to the club. Low and behold, the club used the designs but there was no incentive to do this - I just thought it'd be clever. So why don't the club try a competition with schools or fans to design the next away strip? There are probably lots more people who “doodle” a design but don’t realise they could be onto a winner. Why not arrange a cash prize with a FlyBe flight for the chosen design?
Scotty: It was mentioned previously that fans could submit designs for the new away kit. As you may be aware, all the strip manufacturers have preset templates that they use for this and which change every year. These templates are usually available in the public domain after the strips are released and allow fans to “play” with possible designs from various manufacturers. Would it be possible to request a PSD file of the 2009 templates from Errea so that fans could submit designs that Errea could actually make?
Jay_7: Would it be possible to get the 09/10 Errea PSD files? Also how are shirt design ideas to be put forward? (Are they to be sent to a specific email address or does posting ideas on the website constitute being put forward?)
Club Response: Firstly can we say that we have been very impressed with the designs put forward on the website and the idea of holding some form of competition etc is certainly on the Club radar at the moment, and yes Gringo Jnr, if selected as the new design the contributor will be suitably compensated this time round.
We will (if available from Errea) forward the PSD files to CaleyThistleOnline and suitable methods of submitting finished designs will be discussed with this website. The majority of the designs so far submitted to the web-site would appear to be more biased towards a home kit. This season it is the intention to change our away kit and we require to submit a new proposal to Errea within the next two to three weeks. To short circuit the system and rather than waiting for PSD files etc can you please go on to the Errea web site and that will give you a feel for what strip designs etc are available but the information from Errea is basically (within reason ) they can go with any design.
Could we point out that there is a preference from within the Club that the strip should be predominately white but can include any combinations of red/black and blue and if you upload them onto the web site we will draw them down from there. As stated time is against us on this but we will certainly have more time next time round and will implement this sooner when we change our home kit. We look forward to receiving your ideas.
[Editors Note: We created a thread on the forum for submissions prior to publishing this article and it can be found here: http://community.caleythistleonline.com/index.php?showtopic=10601]
{tab=Stewarding}Gringo Jnr had a couple of questions in follow up to earlier answers on this subject
Q1: If the club say they try to treat away fans the same as our own, why were the Falkirk support at the recent midweek game allowed to stand and chant and put up a huge flag/banner, yet whenever the ICT support attempt this there is an abundance of stewards telling us it is not permitted.
Q2: There are a few people who are confused as to who to contact on a match day when they feel stewarding is too heavy handed or un-called for. Although the club responded to say the Chief Executive is the one to contact, why are some of us led to believe he is also the 'Match Commander’ and who ultimately made the decision we may be complaining about or who told stewards how to act?
Club Response:
Q1: As stated on previous occasions the Stewards have not been instructed to eject any fan from the stadium as long as their behavior is within the current guidelines. There is no ban on singing and chanting nor waving flags or banners as long as they are A) not offensive or B) interfering with the view of your fellow supporters.
Q2: The Chief Executive is not the “Match Commander”, the only input the Club have on match Days within the confines of the Stadium are through our Safety Officer who again is not the Chief Executive. He liaises with the Match Commander but hands over to him in the event of any stewarding or policing issues. We trust this clears up any misunderstanding there may have been about this issue. If anyone has any issues with stewarding or for that matter any other issues on match days please feel free to contact any member of staff within the ground and they will direct you to the appropriate person who will in turn deal with your complaint. If you do not wish to do this then please put your complaint in writing to the Chief Executive and we can assure you it will be dealt with and you will receive a reply even if the reply. We fully appreciate that previously certain people have e-mailed and or written to the Club and have for whatever reason not been replied to but you are assured this will not be the case in future, assuming of course, that the complaints are of a legitimate nature.
{tab=Smoking}Caley Stan commented: "May I suggest that the club provide a fenced off smoking area outside of the stadium - perhaps outside one of the fire exits in the main stand. This is a similar arrangement to the one which allows people to leave the stadium to use the burger van. I must point out once again that club officials, media and those in corporate hospitality are permitted smoke at the front door of the main stand during half-time. This is a clear example of inconsistent enforcement of stadium rules and upsets a number of 'ordinary' fans who wish to smoke at half-time without harming others".
Club Response: As stated previously the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium is a non smoking stadium but the Board are currently investigating all avenues regarding providing a fenced off area as suggested above to see if A) This is legal and if so B) How easily it can be implemented given the limited Stewarding resources currently employed at the Club on Match days. {tab=Ticket Prices}A number of users asked about ticket prices including "SMEE" who asked for further clarification on concessions for the unemployed and Gringo Jnr who asked whether the club would be lowering the cost of children/family tickets
Club Response: The Board is willing to look at all avenues to increase the potential to get fans in to the stadium especially given the current financial situation within the UK economy. We will be faced with the situation of creating a disadvantage to families who currently hold season tickets but we are willing to look at ways of compensating them by way of free ticket allocation / shop vouchers etc for selected games when tickets are allocated to children or youth sporting groups from within our current fan base area. The current price for a family ticket for 1 adult and two children would be £14.50 plus 2 x £6.50 giving a total price for a family of three of £27.50. Please note the family tickets can only be purchased from the shop up to one hour prior to the game.
{tab=5% Levy} RossP asked "Do the club charge the old firm a similar 5% surcharge for the away tickets we sell and distribute for our games at Ibrox and Parkhead?
Club Response: Yes we do, the reason for the 5% surcharge has been explained previously but for those that may have missed that, the reason for the 5% surcharge for Old Firm games (something we objected to) is to cover the cost of both Rangers and Celtic taking full responsibility for their own ticket sales and fans behavior within the confines of the stadium on match days.
{tab=Entertainment/Atmosphere}Gringo Jnr had some follow up on the half time entertainment: Half Time entertainment need not go on for the full 15 minute slot, but the penalties don’t seem to be lasting even 5 mins. Perhaps increase the number of penalties, or bring back the ICT Cheerleaders?
Club Response: We are pleased to announce that the Cheer Leaders will shortly be returning to the stadium and we will gauge the reaction to this. We are also looking at further entertainment avenues for half time and have had discussions with the Youth & Community department regarding re-introducing some form of schools five a side football tournament to be carried out at half time. You will understand that the time available is limited but we are looking at various ways of increasing the match day experience before the game and during halftime.{/tabs}{/slide}
{slide=Item 02: Club Shop & Website} {tab=Club Shop}Comment/question from Supporters: A few questions were asked by fans this month:
Kingsmills - Early days yet but how is the new outlet in the Eastgate Centre performing? RiG - How is the club "shop" performing in town? I say "shop" as it is not an Official ICT only store but merchandise within another store. RossP - There are a lot of training tops that I see the players with which look excellent, however they are unavailable to buy. Will this change? Club Response: The ICT outlet within Zoo is like many retailers in general suffering slightly from the present financial situation but we are currently happy with performance. We will shortly revisit all our current designs etc for merchandise and taking advice from suppliers and designers as to what we should and should not be purchasing to update and revitalise the current stock items that we have on sale.
A couple of questions were also asked about the online club shop:
Gringo Jnr - The club shop section of the official site doesn't seem to offer much in terms of choice. For example, I would like a goalkeeper shirt but can’t seem to get one online. Are the club offering 'everything' that is available in the shop itself, if not, could they? Tichy Black’s Back - In a similar vain - the new on-line club-shop set-up through Born.com is a big improvement and step forward by the club but the photographs of the various items of merchandise on the Formica table/floor now needs to improve to show a more professional side to the club (in my opinion....). Have the club considered asking for local support for any new merchandise photographs when replacing the existing photographs? - i.e. the photographs can be taken for club use in return for an advertising name/watermark on all merchandise photographs similar to that on match day type photographs.... Club Response: As stated above the full merchandising packages both in our retail outlets and online are being looked at the moment and will be upgraded shortly and TBBs comments re photography have been noted and will be taken on board. Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated.
{tab=Official Website}Comment/question from Supporters: RossP asked whether there was any chance of updating the official website to include all coaching staff and their roles e.g. Duncan Shearer...
Club Response: Yes this will be attended to ASAP and will give a complete run down of all the coaches (not just first team and under 19) and this will go some way to explain the volume of work carried out by the Youth & Community Team under the guidance of Danny MacDonald.
{/tabs}{/slide}
{slide=Item 03: Match Programme}Comment/question from Supporters: Renegade asked: "Whatever happened with that bloke in the programme who used to go around the world reporting on the different games he seen (Jim Rendall perhaps?)? He was good.
Club Response: We have spoken with a few people in the stadium and none of us know what happened to him. We will need to speak with the programme editor to ask if he knows.
Gringo Jnr asked "Can the club arrange with the Programme Editor to publish the stadiums' 'function room' prices? I held my wedding there in September and it was truly a fantastic day. I think businesses in the local area can benefit from ICT's boardroom, and also allow fans to see prices for birthday parties and other get-togethers they may wish to have at the stadium. One taxi with Darren on the back surely can't be enough? We are willing to provide some photos from our day should the club want to use some of them to help promote the venue - I think I have pictures from the Highland March fundraiser too that may be used... and what about events like a 'Wii Night' where the fans can compete with the players at games like boxing, guitar hero and others. I am willing to help with the groundwork as a friend in Bournemouth helps organise these successful events at his hotel.
Club Response: Gringo any assistance we can get from you re your recent wedding and use of some of your pictures is greatly appreciated and Darren will be in touch with you to discuss this. We have also discussed with the Commercial Team about getting more information out in to the public domain re pricing and of course the excellent facilities available at the stadium. With regard to carrying out Wii nights etc Darren in his capacity as part of the events team will also chat this through with you. The events team is currently made up of a mixture of Staff and fan volunteers and any assistance on this front is again much appreciated. The events team have held discussions with the Supporters Trust and with the Supporters Club to discuss fund raising initiatives and assistance as it is very time consuming for those currently involved and assistance on any front would be ideal.{/slide}
{slide=Item 04: Tickets}Comment/question from Supporters: Alex MacLeod asked "Would it be possible for the club to sell away tickets through their online system?"
Club Response: Alex this function is currently unavailable to us but we are willing to pursue this on the fans behalf and we will keep you updated. Of the 10 away games we have had this season so far we have only had tickets to sell for Rangers/Celtic and Hearts the rest have been pay at the gate.{/slide}
{slide=Item 05: Disabled Fans View}Comment/question from Supporters: Caley100 asked "What has been done by the club to improve the disabled fans view, I believe there were a few meetings about this problem and as yet nothing has been done. I would like a few board members to use a wheelchair and sit below the north stand just for one game".
Club Response: As stated previously all issues regarding disabled fans are being looked into at the moment and we are aware there are problems with the view from in front of the North Stand a situation we hope to rectify shortly. We are currently in discussion with the various authorities involved (nothing is straight forward as you will understand) and do hope to see improvement in the near future but ask that you give us time to come up with the correct solution.{/slide}
{slide=Item 06: Coaching}Comment/question from Supporters: Scotty commented that "There has been some discussion on the boards about CB achieving his UEFA Pro licensing badge. Can the club confirm that he has (and congratulate him on our behalf) but can they also clear up a discussion about which other coaches (past or present) attained or held this qualification while working for ICT .... According to some, Danny Macdonald, John Robertson, Donald Park, and Charlie Christie all held (hold) this qualification which at the time meant we had one of the most qualified backroom teams in Scotland.
Club Response: (from Danny McDonald): Craig recently attained his Licence, Malcolm has yet to complete his. Donald Park has achieved his UEFA Pro Licence fulfilling the two year duration of studies required, along with John Robertson and I who attained it on the same course in 2004. Charlie has not attended the UEFA Pro Licence Course as of yet however I believe he will be attending the next course that is due to be run, as he holds the necessary experience and qualifications,( the UEFA “A” Licence). However he (Charlie) has just successfully achieved the prestigious “Youth Licence”, in addition to the club’s existing coaches of Duncan Shearer and I being current Youth Licence holders also.
Editors Note: Danny has promised to go into more detail about the Youth and Community setup, the coaching certificates, and all the various obligations required in a future edition of BB or indeed as a separate article. We look forward to this, especially given the success of the U19s in Turkey and the promotion of various younger players to the first team squad this season.{/slide}
{slide=Item 07: Charity/Masters Games}Comment/question from Supporters: Renegade - Would ICT ever consider an ICT v ICT fans XI charity friendly? I think County did this once.
Club Response: This type of game could give rise to issues with injuries and or insurance problems for our playing staff but please put your idea down in writing and forward it to the Chief Executive at the Stadium if you wish and we will consider it.
Tichy Black’s Back - Similar to Renegade's Question - has the club ever been asked to get involved in Football Aid the charity organisation that organises with UK clubs football matches for fans at the end of each season....I have played in many of their matches both north and south of the border and would love the opportunity to play at Caledonian Stadium....and I am sure I am not alone....
Q. Has the club ever been approached by Football Aid to participate in their end of season charity events? - If YES why has the club declined (internal cost issues or perceived lack of interest....)? - If NO would the club consider getting involved for future events?
Club Response: We have no knowledge of being asked to participate in any Football Aid events so will certainly not have declined. As with all things like this if we are approached we look at all the offers on their individual merits and certainly give any charitable event much consideration and seldom refuse to assist in some form. We recently, in conjunction with our sponsor Flybe, carried out a similar activity based around a local team winning the opportunity to participate in training sessions and playing a team of “masters” at the Stadium this was enjoyed by all who participated and we are sure will be repeated next season.
Alex MacLeod - "Have ICT ever thought of putting a Masters team together. There are still a few fit vets around the area who would put on a good display against the more established teams. Even Grassa should still manage a ten minute spell".
Club Response: Having recently watched the “Masters “football from the Braehead Arena it has crossed our minds that we should have enough “old masters” to put forward a team and hopefully a creditable performance. It is something that we would seriously consider if approached by any ex-players who would be willing to organise this on the Clubs behalf. You give Grassa too much credit Alex --- 10 minutes could be stretching it !!! {/slide}
{slide=Item 08: What do YOU want to ask?}Comment/question from Supporters: Gringo Jnr - Do the club have any issues with the fans that they would like to raise questions about? Such as how we as fans can help the club with their ideas as apposed to waiting to ideas to come to them?
Club Response: As stated above any assistance from the supporters of the Club is always encouraged and appreciated. The current events team was brought together by two fans and ICT Staff following a discussion between the parties but was at the instigation of the fans involved. They have now assisted in delivering a very successful boxing night and assist with the equally successful car boot sales and there are further fundraising events in the pipeline for 2009. Please feel free to discuss your ideas with Darren when he contacts you, plus, if any other supporters have any good fundraising ideas and are willing to assist and contribute in the running of the events please get in touch with any member of the current events team, they would be delighted to hear from you and with your assistance.{/slide}
{slide=Item 09: Miscellaneous}{tab=Travel Club} Comment/question from Supporters: 5th Stand - Could the club approach their travel agents regarding an ICT travel club discount, maybe with Flybe and partners?
Club Response: We do not have an official travel agent as such. If the Supporters Trust / Supporters Club were to set up a formal Travel Club then we would certainly consider discussing this with Flybe on their behalf or at least making the introductions required to move it forward. We do not have an official travel agent as such.
Caley Stan - Would the club consider laying on free buses for season ticket holders to attend an away game in the near future, as a gesture to those hardy fans who have had to endure week after week of disappointment at TCS?
Club Response: You will note following the press release last week that this comment has been taken on board and subsidised busses will be available for the away game against Hamilton.
{tab=Pre Season Tour} Comment/question from Supporters: Tichy Black’s Back - Do the club have any preliminary plans in place yet for next season's pre-season tour - overseas country, England, Ireland....etc? If not when does the club normally start to look at this type of thing and have they considered getting involved in a pre-season tournament (either in Inverness or abroad)? Fans may like more notice to plan a trip surrounding it.
Club Response: No plans are in place at this time but they will be made public as soon as they are available. Unfortunately as with preseason matches these events are very much last minute and can be the result of an invitation or the Managers personal preference re location and timing.
{tab=Strip Colours} Comment/question from Supporters: Renegade – Why are home predominantly blue and never mostly red?
Club Response: This is not a Board decision, though they do have final approval and sign off, as stated in previous discussions re strips all parties within the playing / management/commercial teams are consulted re our strip selections and designs.
{tab=Link Ups} Comment/question from Supporters: Renegade – Whatever happened to the proposed linking up between ICT and Sheffield United?
Club Response: The link with Sheffield United still exists.
{tab=West Stand} Comment/question from Supporters: Renegade - Is the club considering building a full scale west stand, or will the ground have moved by then?
Club Response: This has been costed and discussed on countless occasions (see last month’s BB) and it would not be financially viable for the Club to erect a West Stand at this time.
{tab=Scoreboard} Comment/question from Supporters: Renegade – Will the club ever put up a scoreboard?
Club Response: Due to cost this will not be happening in the foreseeable future unless a sponsor comes forward to fund it. Again we have more pressing issues to deal with at the Club on a very limited budget.
{/tabs} {/slide}
{slide=Item 10: Team Management}Comment/question from Supporters: A number of questions were asked relating to team management issues such as the rumoured new contract offered to Craig Brewster, questions asking if the board would state that a new centre back and striker were priorities, and even asking about the full story behind the Neil Warnock affair during the last managerial merry-go-round.
Editors Note: Prior to giving the club response, we would just like to point out (as we did in the BB forum thread) that this is one of the areas we covered during discussions about Boardroom Banter and where the club have stated right from the very start (and we mean the first series of articles as well as the most recent ones) that they were unlikely to answer questions as they were internal matters. On this occasion we posed the questions anyway - as that is what our users asked us to do - but regardless of the tension over this subject, we got the answer we would always have expected.
Club Response: The Board feel all these issues are inappropriate for discussion in open forum as they are business sensitive and we therefore cannot enter into discussions on the subjects above. No Board from any Company discuss their employees current, past or future in public and we are sure you will fully understand our position on this.{/slide}
Despite the tensions between Boardroom and the fans over the last month or more, we once again want to thank Kenny and Graeme for taking the time to provide these answers, especially as they could easily have used the current situation to cancel the series. We look forward to the next set of questions as they are sure to be very interesting !!!
We will close with a final few words from Kenny and Graeme on behalf of the board and club: "Finally the Board, Management, Players and Staff at the Stadium take this opportunity to thank you for support and loyalty to the Club and the Team in 2008 and we look forward to your continued support in what will undoubtedly be challenging and testing in times both financially and in footballing terms in 2009. We wish you and your families a Very Happy and Prosperous New Year".
Please keep the questions coming, whether they are new questions, or whether they are follow-ups to questions asked in this or previous articles.
Questions can be submitted on the CaleyThistleOnline Forum or via email to the address [email protected]

Brewster Sacked

Teaser Paragraph:
The following Press Release was issued by Inverness Caledonian Thistle on 19th January 2009. Directors of Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC met today to consider the recent poor run of results, the worst in our SPL history. The outcome is that team manager Craig Brewster and assistant manager Malcolm Thomson have been asked to leave the club with immediate effect. Club chairman George Fraser said:"This decision was not taken lightly but we feel it is in the best interests of the club looking forward. We thank Craig and Malcolm for their endeavours and extend our best wishes to both for their future. "The process of identifying a new management team is underway with the target of an early appointment geared to ensuring that the club retains its SPL status for the 2009-10 season."
In the interim, team affairs have been placed in the hands of director of football Graeme Bennett, first team coach John Docherty and goalkeeping coach Stuart Garden, who will prepare the squad for Saturday's game against Hearts at Tynecastle.
UPDATE:
Now that this has been confirmed by the club there are no end to the names being speculated in the media as it goes into overdrive. Terry Butcher appears to be the front runner according to some, whilst others choose to put John Robertson at the head of the list. Other contenders listed on various websites or newspapers include the following (you might need to take a deep breath before reading this list !!!)
Gordon Chisholm, Archie Knox, Stephen Frail, Derek McInnes, Neale Cooper, Steven Pressley, Duncan Shearer, Jim Duffy, Barry Wilson, Derek Adams, Donald Park, Ally McCoist, Steve Paterson, Craig Brown, John McGlynn,  Colin Calderwood ......
The only name that doesnt seem to be in the frame this time ? Neil Warnock

Teaser Paragraph:
Ian Black's double for November and December gives him 4 out of 5 for the season so far and stretches his lead on second placed Ross Tokely to a massive 40 points.
Black signed a pre-contract with Hearts this month and their seems to be uncertainty as to whether or not he'll part company before the end of the Month.
Even if he does, it's going to be a monster task for anyone to catch him.  With a new manager on the horizon then we're all hoping the players will get a bit of a lift and maybe someone will rise to the challenge and reel him in.

Voting is open for 7 days from the final whistle of any game. This allows website users to vote for the players they think were the top 3 performers in that match. The top player is awarded 5 'match points', the 2nd gets 3 'match points' and the third gets 1 'match point'. When the voting is closed, we tally up both the quantity of votes (regardless of whether they are 5, 3 , or 1 point votes) and also the number of points awarded.
The quantity of votes a player receives in any match is counted up and the player with the highest quantity of votes at the end of each month is deemed to be the CaleyThistleOnline Player of the Month. This allows consistent performers who may get loads of 1 or 3 point votes but not too many 5 pointers to be in with a shout at being Player of the Month.
Player of the Year Points are calculated by counting up the number of points awarded to the player for each match by website users. We add up all the points for each player for each match and when they are all counted, the top 3 players in each match (highest match point totals) are awarded 5, 3, or 1 player of the year points respectively. Player of the year points are counted up over the season and the player with the highest POY points total receives the CaleyThistleOnline Player of The Year trophy at an end of season awards ceremony.

Hamilton 1-0 Inverness CT - Report

A new low

A lot of positivity surrounded the build up to this week's game against Hamilton.
A  good win last week against Partick in the cup, free buses laid on by some of the directors, a large travelling support expected, and some movement in the transfer market had fans up for it and a buzz around the stadium.
Unfortunately though, when it mattered most, it was back to business as usual as ICT lost their seventh game in a row in a row courtesy of a first half penalty slipping further behind Hamilton at the foot of the table.

Caley Thistle slipped to their seventh straight league defeat at a wind buffeted New Douglas Park yesterday, with relegation rivals Hamilton Accies moving six points clear of Brewsters ailing team. A penalty just before half-time, converted by Simon Mensing, gave Hamilton the only goal of the game and saw them secure a fourth consecutive home victory. For the larger than usual travelling support there was only bitter disappointment as an already desperate season slipped to new lows.
Caley Thistle made two changes to the side who had defeated Partick thistle in the cup, with Ryan Esson returning between the sticks and Richard Hastings coming back at left-back. Play throughout the match was hampered by the horrendous conditions, with a howling wind and driving rain making it difficult for both sides. Early in the match Caley Thistle looked settled and Ross Tokely cut inside from the right before sending a left foot shot inches over the bar. This roused the visiting support, their numbers boosted by free bus travel, but the game settled into a familiar pattern for Caley this season of little penetration in front of goal.
Accies pushed forward and although not managing to test Ryan Esson they took advantage of a deep-lying Caley Thistle to force several free kicks. Don Cowie looked fortunate not to concede a spot kick on the edge of the area but the referee adjudged the foul to have taken place outside the box. Another infringement saw a 30 yard free kick from Easton fly over the bar.
The Jags tried to force their way into the match but found it hard to create any clear-cut chances. Roy McBain slipped in Don Cowie but his cross was taken easily by Cerny. Just after that Accies made the breakthrough when Grant Munro was adjudged to have tripped Joel Thomas in the area. Former Clyde and St Johnstone utility player Simon Mensing stepped up and sent his shot crashing into the roof of the net. Just before half-time David Elebert pulled up injured for Accies and was replaced by veteran Chris Swailes.
Half Time: 1-0
At half-time there was an unsavoury incident among the travelling fans when some young supporters abused Ian Black as he was warming up. The diminutive midfielder was targeted because of him signing a pre-contract agreement to join Hearts. Black clearly heard the abuse and stared long and hard at the group, who were challenged by some in the visitors section. Pre-contract agreements can be a sensitive matter for fans but given the sterling service Black has given Inverness since he signed, especially during this difficult campaign, he must feel aggrieved at the actions of a minority of the support. Given that Caley Thistle have often tied up players on PCAs the best approach from all parties is for the player to take a mature, professional approach to his game and for the fans to judge him on his performances, rather than resort to barracking.
Craig Brewster made a change at half-time with Andrew Barrowman being withdrawn in favour of Garry Wood. The wind and rain took an even heavier toll on the game, with kick outs holding up in the gale. Despite this Caley Thistle looked to have more attacking energy although this did not translate into any more clear chances. Roy McBain sent a good cross over but no attacking player could make contact and the ball flew out. Hamilton looked to be denied a good shout for a penalty when Thomas was body-checked by Latvian stopper Pavel Mihadjuks but the referee waved play on.
On the hour mark Dougie Imrie replaced Russell Duncan, to a cacophony of boos from the home crowd. When at Clyde Imrie was involved in an accidental clash with Ross McCabe which left McCabe requiring treatment on the pitch to resuscitate him and ended his career as a professional footballer. Imrie later forced Cerny into a good save from a free kick and was booked for a thundering challenge in the middle of the park. Last weeks hero Filipe Morais sent a dipping long range shot just over the bar and also forced Cerny into a stop from another long range effort.
Inverness came closest to scoring when Ross Tokely's header from a corner was flicked onto the woodwork by Garry Wood but it simply wasn't to be for the Highlanders and with the final whistle came concerted chants from a large section of the visiting fans for manager Craig Brewster to be sacked. The catcalls for Brewster had been growing throughout the second half and few Caley Thistle fans could ever remember a manager receiving such a roasting from their support.
Full Time: 1-0
The result leaves Caley Thistle six points adrift from Hamilton Accies and a point behind Falkirk. In ICTs five seasons in the SPL only once has a side bottom at this stage of the season avoided the drop, in 2005 when Livingston pulled clear in the final straight sending Dundee down. That was achieved largely through the signing of Hasan Kachoul and it will take an inspired capture to pull Inverness from the malaise that the team has fallen into.
Despite the obvious need for new signings there are many questions that should be asked of the current players and management team - Craig Brewster commented after the game that Inverness find scoring goals difficult yet his formation was inherently negative. Roy McBain and Iain Vigurs are good midfielders but don't offer as potent an attacking threat in wide areas as Dougie Imrie or Don Cowie in those positions would. Why start with them there? Adam Rooney has scored a quarter of ICTs SPL goals this season yet he sits on the bench until the final twenty minutes whereas Andy Barrowman and Garry Wood, who have scored three SPL goals from open play between them, are given more time. Wood is a fine prospect but is in the Graham Bayne mould of a worker and targetman and isn't the ideal player to turn to when a goal is required. Barrowman obviously has talent but should be broken into the side gradually from the bench. Given that the summer saw the departure from the club of Marius Niculae, Graham Bayne and Dennis Wyness questions have to be asked of the decision to head into this season with four inexperienced strikers.
The Caley Thistle fixture list has a depressing look about it for Inverness fans. Next Saturday sees a visit to Tynecastle, the following week Celtic come to the Caledonian Stadium and the fixture after that is a trip to Tannadice. On current form defeats have to be expected in these games which would take the side to ten straight league losses. Would this be enough to see Craig Brewster resign or be removed? Certainly the feelings of the support yesterday seemed to take a decisive turn against Brewster and it is difficult to see either him winning over the majority of the support or his team winning in it's battle against relegation.

Hamilton v Inverness CT Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Yes, at last, the proverbial six pointer has arrived. ICT have now reached the bottom of the SPL and points are at a premium as we make our first trip to New Douglas Park, Hamilton, in what many see as the battle of the two most likely candidates to be plying their trade in the First Division next season.
Hamilton have recently shown a steely determination in their play and good wins against Motherwell and Aberdeen offset by defeat to fellow strugglers St Mirren have seen them climb off the foot of the table to leave a winless in six SPL games Inverness, in pole position for the drop.
Both sides have recognized the importance of this fixture and have taken steps to ensure a large crowd will be in attendance, with Accies bringing admission prices down to £10 for all tickets, excellent news for both sets of fans and should be widely applauded. The Inverness fans will also receive a credit crunch reprieve as free travel on the supporter’s buses is being laid on for any supporter going down from the Highland Capital for this game.  Thanks to both clubs for trying to make this a day to remember. The offer of hospitality at Chambers Bar has not gone unnoticed, and will, I am sure, help add to the atmosphere and will be taken up by hordes of hungry Highlanders as they make their way to New Douglas Park for this now crucial game.

HAMILTON v INVERNESS CT
New Douglas Park, Hamilton
Saturday 14th January, 3:00pm
JANUARY SALES

Both teams have been busy in the January sales so far. Accies have brought in two Old Firm fringe players on loan till May, the greens forward Paul McGowan and from the blue half, Jordan McMillan. Both featured last weekend at Dingwall, as Hamilton eased past our feeder club neighbours in the cup.
Inverness has finally woken up to recognise their plight and have signed Filipe Morais and Thierry Gatheussi from Hibernian till the end of the season. Latvian defender Pavels Mihadjuks from FC Ventspils and former Don Richie Byrne have been added to the squad to bolster the leaking defence. Morais and Mihadjuks started in the cup game against Partick Thistle and Gatheussi came on as a second half sub. All three played their part with Filipe Morais in particular catching the eye by scoring two goals on his ICT debut. More importantly, his overall quality and energy were a breath of fresh air to a side lacking in confidence. The adding of these players to the ICT squad will ease the departures of Ian Black and any impending Don Cowie transfer, although both are still at ICT at present.
PLAYER WATCH
For Accies

James McCarthy has been the subject of some transfer speculation with Middlesbrough rumoured to be interested in signing the eighteen year old star. He was named the Clydesdale Bank Premier League Young Player of the Month for December after his two goals clinched a win over Motherwell and he played a starring role in a fine two nil victory over in form Aberdeen. McCarthy is certainly one to watch as the Republic of Ireland u21 International has been getting rave reviews this season.
Tomas Cerny will be worth watching as well, even if it is only to ensure he does not repeat last week’s ball handling outside of the penalty box at Dingwall. The referee and assistants were not able to spot him gathering the ball, clearly a yard outside of his penalty area, TV footage however shows otherwise. Tomas originally joined Accies until the end of December 2007 in a loan deal from from Czech club SK Sigma Olomouc, but then extended his stay at the club until the end of the season. The player has been in the Czech Republic u21 squad. Tomas took over from Bryn Halliwell as the Accies No 1 for the final 11 games of the season, a time when Accies were unbeaten and secured promotion. Let’s see how well he can cope if ICT can put him under any sort of pressure.
For Caley Thistle

Filipe Morais. The little Potuguese midfielder became an instant hero last week after scoring two goals in the Scottish Cup defeat of Partick Thistle. He added some much needed pace as an attacking midfielder and his overall contribution during the game was immense. He was not afraid to take on the defenders and despite not having practiced with his new team mates, he linked well with them and was able to back up the strikers with some great runs into the oppositions box. His lack of match fitness was starting to show near the end, but he still gave his all and will be an even greater threat when his match sharpness is finely tuned. Filipe is a former u21 Portuguese international and he turned professional after signing for Chelsea in 2003. He was loaned to MK Dons before joining Millwall in the 2006-2007 season on a free transfer. He was also loaned to St Johnstone before signing for Hibs in July 2007. Filipe made thirty appearances for Hibs, only scoring once for the first team. He was handed a surprise start by Craig Brewster last week, but the gamble paid off as he was voted MoM and gave the home support only the second home win this season. Look forward to more ball juggling displays by the pacey midfielder as he has surely warranted a starting berth in this weekend’s head to head with Accies.
Roy McBain. He is sometimes given the nickname of the invisible man, by some sections of the home support. This is due to his ability to disappear during some games. A rejuvenated Roy has defied his critics and has certainly been noticeable in the last few games, putting in some very youthful performances. Not noted for his goal scoring, Roy started the season off in magnificent form, scoring the second goal at Pittodrie after an eighty five yard diagonal run to get on the end of an Imrie pass and he then thumped the ball home from eighteen yards. Roy is a versatile player, and has recently been employed in the right midfield slot by Brewster, despite many fans preference for Roy to play left of centre. Nonetheless, Roy is enjoying an Indian summer in terms of his career and long may that continue.
Who is likely to do battle on Saturday for ICT is now anyone's guess. The likelihood of Ian Black playing seems to be less and less now that Morais has made such a striking debut. Imrie will be another player who may have to miss out as Iain Vigurs is also showing good skills in the left midfield and backed that up with a great goal in the cup. One thing that has probably been established, and that is Lionel Djebi-Zadi will not start, although new signing Richie Byrne may well be pushing for a start depending on match sharpness. Fraser made a good comeback and is pressing Esson for the keeper's slot. Barrowman again failed to hit the target and either Rooney or Wood might be a better option.
All in all, this should be a great away day for the fans, let's hope the team has as much fun as the fans likely will, and bring the three points back up the A9.
A GAME TO REMEMBER

No no, not Accies 0-1 victory this season, we would rather forget that one, but............
Back in the good old days, Pele was boss, Mann was in defence and Denzil was banging them in, when you could stand on the terracing, ICT were in the first division and Hamilton were in the second, we had a seven goal cup tie at Inverness. On the 22 February 2003, Martin Bonnar gave Accies a surprise lead in the second minute. But legend Dennis Wyness scored six minutes later to restore parity before the now Scotland international Barry Robson put the home side ahead. Potter in the Hamilton goal then denied Wyness and Robson before half time. In the second half Inverness moved through the gears and ran out 6-1 winners as Wyness, Robson, Ritchie and McCaffrey settled the tie. A young Grant Munro was a late substitute and came on to make a goal line clearance to deny Accies a consolation. (whatever happened to him).
Squads that day were Inverness CT: Brown, Mann, McCaffray, Golabek, Tokely, Duncan, McBain, Christie, Robson, Wyness, Ritchie.
Subs: Munro, Stewart, Bagan, Keogh, Fraser. Hamilton: Potter, Arbuckle, McDonald, Kerr, Sweeney, Alisdair Graham, Bonnar, Walker, Armstrong, McPhee, Callaghan.
Subs: Sherry, Alistair S Graham, Russell, Dobbins, McFarlane.
Referee: John Rowbotham.   Some memorable names in those line ups, wonder where are they all now?  MY PREDICTION

Difficult to predict now that the January transfer window has started, but with the introduction of the new boys last week, fresh optimism is growing across the ICT support and I am going for an away win to avenge the first encounter this season when only a Jamie Duff blooper was the difference between the two sides as he presented Offiong with a scoring opportunity and he ran through to score the only goal in a turgid struggle.
A win for Inverness will certainly make Brewster feel more confident going into the last quarter of the season and put the onus back on Billy Reids team to up the ante.

Inverness CT 3-0 Partick Thistle - Scottish Cup

Filipe for the Caley Jags

It was Morais instead of Malaise that was the order of the day at Tulloch Caledonian Stadium, Inverness coming out as victors in the 'Battle of the Thistles'.
The Morais double and a strike from Vigurs put the game beyond a Partick team that could find no response.
ICT Fans, and team alike, will be hoping to carry over todays fortunes to the proverbial 6 pointer next week when we travel to face Hamilton.

Under pressure Caley Jags boss Craig Brewster handed starts to new signings Pavels Mihadjuks and Filipe Morais, with Lionel Djebi-Zadi also getting a rare outing. Mike Fraser was the preferred option in goals for this Homecoming Scottish Cup tie against Partick Thistle, so often a thorn in the ICT side having eliminated Inverness twice in this tournament in recent years.
The players making way for these inclusions were Esson who may have been carrying a slight injury, Hastings, Hearts bound Ian Black and the suspended Phil McGuire, who for good measure was unwell, and or Proctor who had a hamstring injury.
The game started in a downpour and with severe gale force winds lashing the Moray Firth it was no surprise that the crowd would be somewhat subdued, although the away support were determined to make a day of it, whatever the weather and whatever the scoreline, so fair play to them.
Inverness started brightly with Roy McBain playing in the right midfield looking re-juvenated and he was first to test Jonathan Tuffy in the SFL1 sides goal when he fired a long range shot which the keeper tipped over. McBain was prominent in most of the early play before MotM Morais took control of the game. He made ground on the right before placing a cross on Andy Barrowmans head, or so it seemed, but Barrowman was unable to make contact and the danger was cleared. Barrowman was out of luck moments later when he pounced on a loose ball close to the Partick goal but although he slid the ball past the advancing keeper, he also slid the ball agonisingly wide of the far post. Little was seen of Partick in the early stages although Liam Buchanan, a former target for ICT, fired an effort towards Fraser but he collected the ball comfortably. Harkins also tried his luck but dragged a twenty five yarder wide of the mark.
ICT made the breakthrough they deserved in the 28th minute when the lively Morais broke on the right and tried his luck from the angle at around the twenty yard distance, the ball deflecting off Twaddle before nestling nicely in the bottom corner of the net. So there it was, half time came along and 1-0 it was to the home side.
What lay in store for ICT was something unusual, we scored a goal at the start of the second half before you could say Lionel Djebi-Zadi had been substituted. Lionel had tried maybe too hard to impress in the first half and his touch seemed to desert him at times. He looked useful going forward, but wayward passing and clumsy touches were his downfall. Anyway, back to the football and Vigurs latched onto an excellent Cowie through ball and the youngster smashed a left footer high into the net behind Tuffy from around fifteen yards and left of centre inside the area. Unusual start for ICT, as we have been prone to losing early second half goals, but yep, inside a minute after the break and we were two up. We appeared to hand Partick the initiative for a spell after this and Scott Chaplin made returning keeper Mike Fraser pull off a good save low to his right to deny him as Partick searched for a foothold in the match. However, we weathered the mini storm and Morais sealed the victory with his second goal of the game with thirty five minutes remaining. He never gave up after Barrowman had knocked a header forward and as he closed down the defender on the edge of the box the ball broke kindly and rolled into the unguarded net. This seemed to deflate Partick and the game was played out without any more scoring. Donnelly did have the ball in the ICT net between the two second half goals but the flag was up well before he knocked it home, and Partick will point out that John Robertson’s substitution weakened them, such is life.
Gathuessi made his debut with around half an hour to go and looks tidy on the ball and Rooney replaced new hero Filipe Morais late on allowing him to take a well deserved standing ovation from the home fans.
No more scoring as the game petered out and a welcome home win for ICT, albeit against first division opponents, but nevertheless still a win which ensures us of a home tie in the next round against the winners of the Ayrshire derby. Partick were a bit disappointing to be honest, but we have failed to knock them out of the cup before and you can’t do any more than get to the next round, this we achieved.
TM4TJ MotM:- Without question goes to Filipe Morais. Pace, quality, trickery and goals as well, something we have been missing for some time. The former Portuguese under21 international also has impeccable English, how handy is that. Special mention to some others who played their part, new boy Pavels Mihadjuks slotted in nicely in the centre back role and his no nonsense approach was welcomed, and he also tried to play the ball out of defence at times. Mike Fraser looked confident and played as though he had been the number one choice all season. Roy McBain is getting younger I am sure of it, started the game very brightly and lashed a couple of good efforts on target. Ian Vigurs played well and scored with that sweet left foot we know he possesses. On the downside, another blank for Andy Barrowman and Lionel may have played himself out of the reckoning. Russell Duncan needs to get some more practice in with his passing, as yet again he constantly misplaced passes leaving the recipient of the hospital pass a little aggrieved.
Many fans will see this as an opportunity to maybe progress in the cup as Killie are the only other side to fail in Inverness this season and who can forget a couple of memorable games against Ayr United. The 4-3 cup game is still one of the all time greats as was the 7-3 game. Here’s hoping for a good run in the cup and a smile on the supporters faces as the relegation battle heats up nicely with the trip to Hamilton next Saturday.
Remember, free buses to Hamilton and £10 entry should ensure a bumper away day.
