Canada V Scotland U20's

Teaser Paragraph:
As he lives in that neck of the woods, was going to the game, and there was a chance that Rory McAllister might be involved, we asked Scarlet Pimple if he would send us a report on the U20 match between Canada and Scotland..... and here it is.
Today I am under the weather, sore throat and temperature - I think it was because yesterday I was literally "under" the atrocious weather....read on:
Since Thursday, 22 March 2007, about 50 inches of rain has been dumped on us here in the Vancouver region of S.W. British Columbia, the most Westerly Province of Canada on the Pacific Coast. Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C. was therefore unplayable and the game was transferred to another Municipal stadium in the suburbs with artificial turf - 4p.m. kick-off.
So my son and I eventually found the park and questioned a Canadian Soccer Association official as to why tarps had not been placed on the original pitch. Her response was "in 112 years we have never had to cancel a game at Swangard, but the Scots have come a long way and we are desperate to play the game" - Roll-on global warming!!!
At a much smaller stadium it was first come first served for the seats, but we did get two very good ones in the VIP section courtesy of that lady. We were flanked on both sides by CBC cameras (for their broadband live presentation) and the owner of the local Whitecaps F.C., Vancouver’s professional soccer team, handed me a list of the players. It was all very friendly and that was a nice touch. Bobby Lenarduzzi, former manager of the Canadian National team, was also seated beside us and on my left was the father of one of the National team's goalkeepers. So we had great chat during the match to boot.
The game started in pouring rain and sloshing puddles at every step with the Canadian team attacking strongly but the Under 20 Scottish boys weathered the storm and within 20 minutes were dominating possession in the middle of the park with fast, very accurate passing but without much success up front.  They looked good but poor tactics were to prove their undoing. Ryan Conroy (Celtic), a midfielder, was out on the left wing inside the Canadian half and never got a sniff of the ball. My son said "his team-mates don't like him because they never pass him the ball". In truth, with acres of space on the left and the middle and right side of the park completely clogged up with 6 Scotland players it seemed incomprehensible why they never passed to him.
The conditions were so bad as to be crying out for a run down to the by-line and a hard ball delivered across the goalmouth to take advantage of any possible mistakes. Also this would have had the effect of drawing more Canadian players out of the middle melee leaving more room for the Scots to run in on goal .But no....eventually he got fed up and went into the middle of the pitch to try to get into the action but he did take set pieces and had a good ball narrowly go by the post on one of the infrequent forays up front by the Scots.
At half time I bumped into Rory McAllister coming out of the dressing room. I asked him if he played for Caley Thistle and then introduced myself and I asked him if he was playing today. He said "I'm on the bench but I hope to get a game later". I then asked him slyly "are you going to win today" and he gave a half smile and said "oh yes, sure". Then he was off on a jaunt to warm up. He seemed like a very nice fella but he towered over me since I am only 5'7" - hmmm.
After half time the game improved and it came to life with a bang when Gabe Gala (NTC Ontario) took advantage of HIS wide spaces on the left side of the park, skinned the Scottish right back, cut in sharply to the right making a bee-line for goal and delivered a powerful 30-yard dipping left-footed shot right over the head of the goalie, Andrew McNeil (substituted in the 2nd half) and into the net. A fantastic goal fit to win any match. Crowd erupted in glee.
A short while later a 2- player Canadian breakaway down the middle, leaving two Scots in their wake, homed in on goal and to the disbelief of the crowd and the Scottish players they cottoned onto the  cross coming in from the right and scored. Shortly after this the linesman did not flag when a Scotland player was nudged off balance in the box , staggered forward but was unable to keep upright and the Canadian referee did not give what I considered to be a clear penalty!!!!!
However, immediately afterwards in a goalmouth stramash, Steven Fletcher (Hibernian) managed to crack the ball in. It was saved by the goalie but he allowed it to squirm out of his hands into the net to make it 2-1. At that point I thought that the Scots would surely now get going but the Canadian response to this was to again sprint downfield and in another goalmouth scramble in the rain rammed the ball into the Scottish net.
Steven Fletcher was outstanding-- cool, collected and controlled and looked like a top class player. He and the strapping Gary Kenneth (Dundee United) who had a really stuffy game were named as "men of the match" together with Jaime Peters (IpswichTown) and Gabe Gala (NTC Ontario) named as MOM for the Canadians. Jaime Peters, in particular, was a constant thorn in the flesh of the Scots in the first half with his trickery and speedy direct runs. Also prominent for Canada was Will Johnson, (S.C. Heerenveen) Captain, never afraid to run at the Scots' defence, and I thought that the steady Kennedy Owusu-Ansah (Hertha Berlin) at right back also came on to a good aggressive game also making one or two probing runs up their right flank, something the Scots back two never did preferring to pass the ball to each other frequently across the goalmouth...Hmmm.
Rory McAllister came on with about ten minutes to go, positioning himself as a forward on the inside right slot, but never got the ball so he went over to the left again in search of some action. He did have a strong 25 yard shot go just wide of the right post and, as I recall, one over the bar, but coming on cold and damp with five minutes to go no one can judge his performance.
Kevin McCann (Hibs) came on late also to position himself on the right wing and obviously was itching to get a kick of the ball but was similarly ignored by the Scots players in the middle just as Ryan Conroy was in the first half which meant that the clogged up middle was the chosen route for the Scots and it was the rock on which their ship floundered.
Frankly I am still baffled as to what the Scots' tactics were in this match but it was a good experience for the youngsters who looked dejected as they trooped off the pitch but it was a great fillip for the aspirations of the Canadian National team. These two teams play again in Victoria, the capital of B.C. on Vancouver Island, on 27 March 2007 -an evening match.
The Final Score - Canada 3 v 1 Scotland
Despite everything, I really enjoyed this game and outing.

Post Split Fixtures Announced

Teaser Paragraph:
The SPL have announced the post-split fixtures and for the second year running Caley Thistle will have to endure only two post split home games and a final game away from home. Home games will be against Motherwell and Dunfermline with away games at Dundee Utd, Falkirk and St Mirren With 18 home games and 20 away games last season, and a final 05/06 fixture played away from home, Caley Thistle fans could have been forgiven for expecting a little extra this season, perhaps three post-split games or maybe a final fixture at home, but they got neither as the split once again showed its inequality and ridiculousness.

Inverness CT 1-3 Dunfermline - SPL

Stephen Kenny will no doubt enjoy the rest of his St Patrick's day after this victory threw the Pars an SPL survival lifeline !!
The Dunfermline manager hadn't seen his side win in sixteen games but this victory had nothing to do with luck as the Pars broke that unenviable record convincingly. Surprisingly enough, this was also Dunfermline's first ever SPL victory against ICT. Club Historian Ian Broadfoot provides the official report from the game.
ICT 1-3 DUNFERMLINE
17th March 2007 Tulloch Caledonian Stadium, Inverness  INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE FC  1 (Paatelainen 23) Team: Fraser, Tokely, McCaffrey, Dods, Hastings, Wilson, Duncan (Rankin 63), Black, Paatelainen, McSwegan (Dargo 63), Bayne Subs: Hart, Morgan, Sutherland, McAllister & Ridgers
DUNFERMLINE  3 (Glass 47, 78pen , McIntyre 60) Team: De Vries, Ross, McGuire, Wilson (Harris 80), S. Morrison, O'Brien, Mason, Glass, Hammill (Muirhead 86), McManus, McIntyre  Subs - McCunnie, O. Morrison, Crawford, Hamilton & McKenzie
Referee  Chris Boyle  Attendance  4447  Man of the Match  Markus Paatelainen (ICT) Bitter disappointment for Caley Thistle but all credit to Dunfermline for a spirited second half fight back. It was 1-0 to ICT at half time and all looked well. Dunfermline scored two goals in the second half then a very controversial penalty award led to a third and the match was over.   Dunfermline are almost down and out of the SPL but more victories like this and all that could change. ICT’s defeat means that a top six finish is impossible and the SPL split is finally decided.   With Grant Munro still suspended Stuart McCaffrey again partnered Darren Dods in central defence. Markus Paatelainen continued in midfield instead of the injured Roy McBain and Gary McSwegan started up front. Craig Dargo came back from injury to a bench spot and he came on for 27 minutes.   Charlie Christie was scathing in his appraisal: "The players have to take responsibility for performances like that along with myself, we like to take the plaudits when we do well so we must take the brunt of it when we don't do well."   A bitterly cold wind dominated the day but Caley Thistle started well. In six minutes strong shots from Ian Black and Gary McSwegan were blocked then four minutes later danger was averted at the other end by Stuart McCaffrey’s timely tackle on Adam Hammill.   In 19 minutes a Barry Wilson free kick from 25 yards deflected off the wall and Graham Bayne just failed to touch it past Dorus De Vries. The opening goal came in 23 minutes when a Ross Tokely high ball from the right bounced about in the box before Paatelainen blasted it in from 12 yards. Despite continuing to dominate the home side could not find another goal – an angled Ian Black snap shot was taken well by De Vries in 36 minutes then the keeper tipped over a Wilson cross just before the break.   Half Time: 1-0   Just two minutes into the second half Dunfermline came right back into it. A Jim O’Brien cross was volleyed past Mike Fraser from 15 yards by Stephen Glass with the home defence absent. Another O’Brien cross was deflected to Jim McIntyre on the hour mark and he touched it in from close range for 2-1.   A Paatelainen ball from the left was tipped over by De Vries in 76 minutes as Caley Thistle tried to claw their way back into the game. The final nail in the coffin came two minutes later when Hammill went down in a clash with Hastings on the edge of the box. The home fans were livid when the referee pointed to the spot. Glass ignored the controversy and hit low into the net despite Mike Fraser guessing correctly and getting a hand to it.   In 83 minutes the controversy moved to the other end when Wilson was brought down by Scott Morrison – Wilson landed in the box but the offence was decreed to have happened just outside. The scoring was over but not the drama. A minute over time Tom McManus came in heavily on Black and a straight red was shown.   Full Time: 1-3   It made no difference as the match was effectively over. Caley Thistle moved to eighth and Dunfermline gained three points on the rest of lower teams.

ICT V Dunfermline - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
With the top six virtually out of reach - it's still mathematically possible, but lets not kid ourselves - the Caley Thistle focus is now on finishing as the 'best of the rest' like last season.
Dunfermline on the other hand - nine points adrift at the foot of the table - are fighting for survival and will be hoping to come away from the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium with all three points.
Kids are getting free entry for this game so hopefully a bumper crowd will cheer the home side on to victory (albeit in a communal voice that is a few octaves higher than normal !). Andrew Fraser previews the game.

The teams have played a total of 17 times (14 League, 3 Cup) with 35 goals (18 Inverness CT, 17 Dunfermline) between them. Inverness CT: 6 wins (6 League, 0 Cup) Draws: 7 (5 League, 2 Cup) Dunfermline: 4 wins (3 League, 1 Cup) PREVIOUS MATCHES TO REMEMBER 07/08/1999 (1st Division) Dunfermline 4-0 INVERNESS CT: In the first meetings between these sides nothing went to plan for the Caley Jags. A 4-0 drubbing which Petrie scored a last minute goal for the Pars. 10/04/2004 (Scottish Cup Semi-Final) INVERNESS CT 1-1 Dunfermline: Inverness appeared in only their 2nd Scottish Cup Semi-Final in history although they were the only team to still be in at this stage last year as well as 2004. Paul Ritchie had put a glancing header in just before half time but Craig Brewster cancelled it out later. 20/04/2004 (Scottish Cup Semi-Final Replay) Dunfermline 3-2 INVERNESS CT (Pittodrie): Inverness left Pittodrie with a sense of what could have been. Paul Ritchie scored a spectacular goal of which the build up and the lovely floated pass by Bingham was unbelievable. Darren Young, Craig Brewster and Barry Nicholson all scored to make it 3-1 to the Pars but David Bingham got a goal of his own with a penalty late on. Inverness would be seeing a lot more of Pittodrie the next season. And little did Brewster know he just knocked out the team that he would be playing for and managing a year later!! 15/08/2004 (SPL) INVERNESS CT 2-0 Dunfermline (Pittodrie): A first SPL win for the Caley Jags on their first “home” game of the season. Stuart Golabek had scored Inverness CT’s first ever SPL goal in 12 minutes then Juanjo opened his account with his first for the club. It was a great day in a game dominated by the home side. FACTS BETWEEN THE TEAMS • Inverness CT have never lost a SPL game to Dunfermline. • Dunfermline have never lost a 1st division game to Inverness CT. • Craig Brewster has played for both teams albeit for two short spells. • The last meeting was on 23/12/2006. It what sounded a dire match, it ended goal less with a point a piece in front of an uninspired 4216. The referee was William Collum. • The fixture averages around 2 goals a game.
PLAYERS TO WATCH Craig Dargo (Inverness CT): A name that has been missing from the Inverness CT first team squad is Craig Dargo, however he is ready to possibly play a part in the game on Saturday. Dargo, along with Wyness have been deeply missed and I wonder how the recent results would have changed had these two been fit. Bayne has been playing well, however Dargo is now keen for a good end to the season. The former Kilmarnock player’s contract runs out in the summer and has yet to sign a new deal. He hasn’t played since the 3-0 victory against Hibs on the 21st January, and Inverness have only managed one league victory since then. Has 9 goals so far this season and is likely to feature heavily in the last remaining games of the season. Let’s hope however, these games are going to be his last. Stephen Simmons (Dunfermline): The influential midfield player is a key part of the Pars side. The former Cowdenbeath and Hearts player has already scored 5 goals this season and played the majority of games. If Dunfermline have any hope of surviving relegation, then Simmons will probably play a part in that. However it is the away form that has to change, and surprisingly enough all of Simmons’ goals have come at home. Their away form has to change to have any hope. KIDS GO FREE Inverness CT have very kindly given FREE admission to all under 16s on Saturday. This also applies to the away fans. So hopefully this will increase the crowd on Saturday, just like at Rugby Park last week. Squad: Ally Ridgers, Jonathon Smith, Michael Fraser, Darren Dods, Stuart Soane, Ross Tokely, Guy Kerr, Richard Hastings, Stuart McCaffrey, John Rankin, Ian Black, Zander Sutherland, Alan Morgan, Richie Hart, Barry Wilson, Russell Duncan, Markus Paatelainen, Craig Dargo, Gary McSwegan, Rory McAllister, Graham Bayne Injured: Dennis Wyness (dislocated shoulder- out for season) Roy McBain (slight groin problem) Suspended: Grant Munro

Kids go FREE at ICT

Teaser Paragraph:
Caley Thistle have announced that Kids will go FREE at ICT ... for this weekend's game at least ! After the success of the Kilmarnock price reduction last week which saw the crowd at Rugby Park swell from an average gate of 4800 against ICT to over 7600, ICT officials are hoping that their decision to allow children under 16 free entry into this weekend's Dunfermline game will have a similar effect on the crowd at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium.
Average crowds against Dunfermline are around 3600 so there is plenty room for the free kids .......
{styleboxop}If this initiative is successful, we will look at repeating it. Alan Savage, ICT Chairman{/styleboxop}In a press release issued on Tuesday, Caley Thistle Chairman Alan Savage said "If this initiative is successful, we will look at repeating it. Football is expensive for families these days so we want to make this gesture and be able to evaluate the response. We're thanking our existing fans and whetting the appetite of the prospective Caley Thistle supporters of future years. We hope many youngsters will cheer us on this weekend as a result of this free entry scheme. We're even extending it to young Dunfermline fans."

Kilmarnock 3-2 Inverness CT- SPL

Killie and the Caley Jags served up another game with a load of goals but unfortunately - like the last game between the sides - it was Killie who got the higher tally. Club Historian Ian Broadfoot supplies the official report from Rugby Park.
KILMARNOCK 3-2 ICT
10th March 2007 Rugby Park, Kilmarnock  KILMARNOCK  3 (Di Giacamo 17, 27, Naismith 40)  Team: Smith, Murray (Locke 79), Greer, Wright, Hay, Di Giacamo, Fowler, Johnston, Leven (Wales 85), Nish, Naismith Subs: Koudou, Gibson, Quinn, O'Leary & Harpur
INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE FC  2 (Paatelainen 10, Dods 47)  Team: Fraser, Tokely, McCaffrey, Dods, Hastings, Wilson (Hart 76), Black (Sutherland 76), Duncan, Paatelainen, Bayne, McSwegan (McAllister 79) Subs: Morgan, Rankin, Soane & Ridgers
 Referee  Alan Freeland  Attendance  7630
With Celtic cemented at the top of the SPL this was the day that the top six was determined and the relegation spot assigned to Dunfermline.
Barring mathematical miracles Caley Thistle cannot now catch Kilmarnock and must be content with a lower-level but safe position. Dunfermline could only draw with St Mirren so will go down – again barring an extraordinary sequence of results.
At the start of the day, seventh placed ICT faced sixth placed Kilmarnock with six points between them. The visitors had Grant Munro suspended and Roy McBain still injured so Charlie Christie had to ring the changes.
"I thought we deserved to take something out of the game" said Charlie Christie. "In the second half I thought we pinned Kilmarnock back for the vast majority of it".
As expected Stuart McCaffrey came into central defence but there were surprises with first starts for Gary McSwegan and Markus Paatelainen. All three acquitted themselves well but it was the young Finn who particularly caught the eye as he grabbed his first goal for the club in the tenth minute. It was not to prove enough and by half time Killie held a 3-1 lead. This was pulled back to 3-2 but despite great efforts it stayed that way.
CIS Cup finalists Kilmarnock attracted a large crowd for this crunch game but it was the small knot of ICT supporters that celebrated first in ten minutes. Richard Hastings powered down the left wing, crossed into the centre and Markus Paatelainen’s looping header from 12 yards defeated Graeme Smith for 1-0.
The lead lasted just seven minutes when a Peter Leven long throw bounced high over the defence and Paul Di Giacomo touched it for 1-1. In 27 minutes Killie took the lead when Mike Fraser pushed away a Steven Naismith volley and Di Giacomo hit home the rebound via the bar. Five minutes from the break a Grant Murray cross was partly cleared, returned into the box by Di Giacomo and Naismith spectacularly sent an overhead kick low into the corner for 3-1 to the home side.
Half Time: 3-1
That could have been it but Caley Thistle came out fighting in the second half and took just three minutes to make it 3-2.
A McSwegan 30 yard shot was tipped over by Graeme Smith and Barry Wilson’s corner from the right was headed in by Darren Dods via a touch off a defender.
On the hour mark Dods had a chance but hooked wide of the post then Di Giacomo did the same at the other end. Paatelainen cleared a Gordon Greer header off the ICT line in 72 minutes then the visitors made two substitutions. Zander Sutherland replaced the booked Ian Black and Richie Hart came on for Barry Wilson. Rory McAllister, just named in the Scotland under 20 squad, replaced Gary McSwegan and Killie club captain Gary Locke took the field with Grant Murray departing.
Despite these moves a strong ICT finish came to nothing. A Paatelainen shot was saved by the foot of Graeme Smith, Ross Tokely hit over from 25 yards, a Richie Hart corner was headed on by Dods but cleared then another Hart corner went harmlessly for a goal kick. Alan Johnston shot wide at the other end in the closing seconds of the regulation 90 minutes. This took pressure off the Killie defence then there were three added minutes which stretched to four. A long Mike Fraser free kick was taken by Graeme Smith and time was nearly up.
After 94 minutes a Richard Hastings free kick was knocked on by Ross Tokely, cleared by the Killie defence and that was it.
Full Time: 3-2
Kilmarnock now go into next week’s CIS Cup final with a top six SPL finish assured and Caley Thistle remain seventh.
