Kilmarnock 3-2 Inverness CT- SPL

Killie and the Caley Jags served up another game with a load of goals but unfortunately - like the last game between the sides - it was Killie who got the higher tally. Club Historian Ian Broadfoot supplies the official report from Rugby Park.
KILMARNOCK 3-2 ICT
10th March 2007 Rugby Park, Kilmarnock  KILMARNOCK  3 (Di Giacamo 17, 27, Naismith 40)  Team: Smith, Murray (Locke 79), Greer, Wright, Hay, Di Giacamo, Fowler, Johnston, Leven (Wales 85), Nish, Naismith Subs: Koudou, Gibson, Quinn, O'Leary & Harpur
INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE FC  2 (Paatelainen 10, Dods 47)  Team: Fraser, Tokely, McCaffrey, Dods, Hastings, Wilson (Hart 76), Black (Sutherland 76), Duncan, Paatelainen, Bayne, McSwegan (McAllister 79) Subs: Morgan, Rankin, Soane & Ridgers
 Referee  Alan Freeland  Attendance  7630
With Celtic cemented at the top of the SPL this was the day that the top six was determined and the relegation spot assigned to Dunfermline.
Barring mathematical miracles Caley Thistle cannot now catch Kilmarnock and must be content with a lower-level but safe position. Dunfermline could only draw with St Mirren so will go down – again barring an extraordinary sequence of results.
At the start of the day, seventh placed ICT faced sixth placed Kilmarnock with six points between them. The visitors had Grant Munro suspended and Roy McBain still injured so Charlie Christie had to ring the changes.
"I thought we deserved to take something out of the game" said Charlie Christie. "In the second half I thought we pinned Kilmarnock back for the vast majority of it".
As expected Stuart McCaffrey came into central defence but there were surprises with first starts for Gary McSwegan and Markus Paatelainen. All three acquitted themselves well but it was the young Finn who particularly caught the eye as he grabbed his first goal for the club in the tenth minute. It was not to prove enough and by half time Killie held a 3-1 lead. This was pulled back to 3-2 but despite great efforts it stayed that way.
CIS Cup finalists Kilmarnock attracted a large crowd for this crunch game but it was the small knot of ICT supporters that celebrated first in ten minutes. Richard Hastings powered down the left wing, crossed into the centre and Markus Paatelainen’s looping header from 12 yards defeated Graeme Smith for 1-0.
The lead lasted just seven minutes when a Peter Leven long throw bounced high over the defence and Paul Di Giacomo touched it for 1-1. In 27 minutes Killie took the lead when Mike Fraser pushed away a Steven Naismith volley and Di Giacomo hit home the rebound via the bar. Five minutes from the break a Grant Murray cross was partly cleared, returned into the box by Di Giacomo and Naismith spectacularly sent an overhead kick low into the corner for 3-1 to the home side.
Half Time: 3-1
That could have been it but Caley Thistle came out fighting in the second half and took just three minutes to make it 3-2.
A McSwegan 30 yard shot was tipped over by Graeme Smith and Barry Wilson’s corner from the right was headed in by Darren Dods via a touch off a defender.
On the hour mark Dods had a chance but hooked wide of the post then Di Giacomo did the same at the other end. Paatelainen cleared a Gordon Greer header off the ICT line in 72 minutes then the visitors made two substitutions. Zander Sutherland replaced the booked Ian Black and Richie Hart came on for Barry Wilson. Rory McAllister, just named in the Scotland under 20 squad, replaced Gary McSwegan and Killie club captain Gary Locke took the field with Grant Murray departing.
Despite these moves a strong ICT finish came to nothing. A Paatelainen shot was saved by the foot of Graeme Smith, Ross Tokely hit over from 25 yards, a Richie Hart corner was headed on by Dods but cleared then another Hart corner went harmlessly for a goal kick. Alan Johnston shot wide at the other end in the closing seconds of the regulation 90 minutes. This took pressure off the Killie defence then there were three added minutes which stretched to four. A long Mike Fraser free kick was taken by Graeme Smith and time was nearly up.
After 94 minutes a Richard Hastings free kick was knocked on by Ross Tokely, cleared by the Killie defence and that was it.
Full Time: 3-2
Kilmarnock now go into next week’s CIS Cup final with a top six SPL finish assured and Caley Thistle remain seventh.

Kilmarnock V ICT - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
The last 5 games between these sides have produced 23 goals with Kilmarnock edging it 12-11 courtesy of a 4-3 win at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium earlier this season. Caley Thistle haven't lost at Rugby Park in the league but also haven't won there since April 2005 .... A betting man would probably go for a draw but ICT need all three points if a top six finish is to remain anything more than a pipe dream. Andrew Fraser previews the match. Kilmarnock v Inverness CT

A Barry Robson goal was cancelled out by Garry Hay meaning a replay was to be played. 06/03/2001 (Scottish Cup 4th Round replay) Kilmarnock 2-1 INVERNESS CT: Even though Davide Xausa put the 1st Division side in front, McGowne and Wright made sure that Kilmarnock were the team to go through. Ally McCoist came on as a sub for Kilmarnock. 23/10/2004 (SPL) Kilmarnock 2-2 INVERNESS CT: After going down twice Inverness deservedly earned their first away point in the SPL. Barry Wilson cancelled out Murray’s opener but then Kilmarnock went ahead through a good goal by Greer. Craig MacKay wrongly sent off McCaffrey after 51 minutes but even though down to 10 men Inverness worked hard and deservedly Liam Fox scored his first ever goal for Inverness with a late equaliser. 04/01/2005 (SPL) INVERNESS CT 0-2 Kilmarnock: ICT ended their stay at Pittodrie with a loss as Killie stopped the good form the team were in. 2 goals by Invincible late on meant Inverness started 2005 off bad. The team could have played better according to some of the ICT fans on the Message Board. FACTS BETWEEN THE TEAMS • All League meetings between the teams have taken place in the SPL. • Inverness CT have an unbeaten SPL record at Rugby Park, drawn 3 and winning 1. • Kilmarnock are unbeaten in the last 6 matches in this fixture, winning 2 and drawn 4. • The last game between these sides was a 7 goal cracker at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium with Kilmarnock winning by the odd goal on the 16th December 2006. Dargo and Dods (2) scored for Inverness CT; Naismith (2) and Nish (2) scored for Kilmarnock. • Inverness CT haven’t beaten Kilmarnock since the 9th April 2005. PLAYERS TO WATCH Stuart McCaffrey (Inverness CT): Stuart has been used to sitting on the bench for most of the season, however he is likely to play against Kilmarnock on Saturday, the venue where he lost his place in the team. Stuart was wrongly sent off as Dargo, a Kilmarnock player at the time, fell softly and the referee saw it as a last man challenge. That was back on the 23rd October 2004 and Dods has done considerably well since coming into the side over 2 years ago. Stuart has made some appearances over the 2 seasons since his red card, and has rarely disappointed when called into action. It must be hard to only play for the first team on a few occasions (7 times he has featured this season in a match). He has done well in the reserves and with Dods leaving in the summer, next season could see the defender back in the first team. With Munro suspended, Stuart will view this as a chance to get back into the team, for the remaining fixtures this season. He deserves credit for staying and trying to regain a place in the team. Alan Combe (Kilmarnock): Alan Combe never played a game this season until the 15th January. However, the former Cowdenbeath, Bradford, St Mirren and Dundee Utd keeper has managed to keep the no 1 jersey since then. Even though he has a slight calf strain, he is expected to play. An experienced keeper, who will play his 80th game for the club since signing in 2004. Squad: Ally Ridgers, Jonathon Smith, Michael Fraser, Darren Dods, Stuart Soane, Ross Tokely, Guy Kerr, Richard Hastings, Stuart McCaffrey, John Rankin, Ian Black, Zander Sutherland, Alan Morgan, Richie Hart, Barry Wilson, Russell Duncan, Markus Paatelainen, Gary McSwegan, Rory McAllister, Graham Bayne Injured: Dennis Wyness (dislocated shoulder- out for season) Roy McBain (slight groin problem) Craig Dargo (dislocated shoulder) Suspended: Grant Munro

Inverness CT 1-0 Dundee Utd - SPL

A Barry Wilson goal right at the death wins all three points for Caley Thistle. The goal came moments after Grant Munro, making his 200th appearance for the club, received a straight red card for a tackle on Barry Robson. Club Historian Ian Broadfoot reports from the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium.
ICT 1-0 DUNDEE UNITED
3rd March 2007 Tulloch Caledonian Stadium, Inverness  INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE FC  1 (Wilson 90)  Team: Fraser, Tokely, Dods, Munro, Hastings, Wilson, Black, Duncan, Rankin (Paatelainen 74), McAllister (McSwegan 64), Bayne Subs: McCaffrey, Morgan, Hart, Sutherland & Ridgers
DUNDEE UNITED  0 Team: Stillie, Dillon, McCracken, Wilkie, Kalvenes, Kerr, Gomis, Robson, Robertson (Samuel 46), Daly (Robb 73), Hunt (Goodwillie 81) Subs: McCord, Watson, Mair & Mclean
Referee  Steven Finnie  Attendance  3901  Man of the Match  Darren Dods (ICT)   Up until the last three minutes this game was totally forgettable – two off-form teams producing very little. The match was punctuated by free kick after free kick and chances were few.   With a minute of normal time left Grant Munro tackled Barry Robson on the half way line and the referee deemed it reckless – a straight red card was shown and Munro’s 200th appearance was spoiled. With a full two minutes of added time on the clock Barry Wilson scored dramatically to keep the points in Inverness .   This was reminiscent of the closing period of last Sunday’s Celtic game but there the similarity of the matches ended.    Roy McBain dropped out of the ICT team from last week due to both injury and suspension and Rory McAllister came in to partner Graham Bayne up front.   Charli Christie said: "We weren't at our best today, I think that was apparent to everyone but we showed some great resolve which is vitally important in football".  It was Bayne who created some excitement in the first minute when he blocked a David McCracken clearance but it bounced back to a grateful Derek Stillie. With four minutes gone United’s Sean Dillon sent over a cross from the right and Jon Daly hit it first time past the post from close range.   In 23 minutes Mike Fraser dived to his right and touched a 25 yard Barry Robson shot past for a corner. Ross Tokely headed over in 32 minutes then, with five minutes of the half left, Richard Hastings came close with a header that was cleared off the line.I think that is only the second game of the season that we have taken more points than we deserved.    Half Time: 0-0   Things did not really improve after the break but home hopes were lifted when Rory McAllister robbed a defender inside the United half after 47 minutes but he hesitated and the defence regrouped before he could make the chance count. Robson netted a minute later for the visitors but the whistle had long gone.   United full back Christian Kalvenes crossed high from the left in 62 minutes but Noel Hunt just failed to connect at the back post. A repeat of this cross in 69 minutes led to a Collin Samuel bouncing header which went not far wide.   With six minutes left Bayne knocked the ball to substitute Gary McSwegan who chested it down and shot on the turn but it was blocked. It went out to Russell Duncan on the left but he shot wide of the target. United’s best effort of the match came in 85 minutes when Robson curled a shot low from 18 yards but Fraser was equal to the task and dived to push it for a corner.   Then came the dramatic last three minutes. Munro’s red card seemed to spur on the home side and an excellent move produced a late late winner. An Ian Black chip set Barry Wilson down the right – he cut inside and shot low for goal. Stillie spilled it, Bayne stepped in to touch it Markus Paatelainen and he found Wilson 18 yards out. Despite the pressure Wilson hit it neatly past Stillie to stun the travelling support and grab the points.   Full Time: 1-0   Wilson was engulfed by his colleagues and the match was over. As a result ICT leapfrogged United to a healthy seventh place.

ICT V Dundee Utd - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Caley Thistle welcome Dundee United to the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium this weekend as they seek to bounce back from a sickening last gasp defeat against Celtic. ICT have only lost once in 8 league games to the Tannadice side, unfortunately that was in the most recent meeting. If a top six finish is to be anything more than a distant hope, this is a match that must be won. Andrew Fraser provides the preview.

Inverness CT: 4 wins (2 League, 2 Cup) Draws: 6 (5 League, 1 Cup) Dundee Utd: 4 wins (3 League, 1 Cup) A GAME TO REMEMBER For this weeks game to remember we take you back to Inverness CT’s first ever victory over Dundee Utd. In their previous 7 attempts Inverness had failed to beat the Terrors but the midweek CIS Cup match gave them another chance to break the duck. Only 2 minutes had gone when Liam Fox put Inverness CT into an early lead. And with 4 minutes left of the first half, Barry Wilson capitalised on a keeper error to slam the ball home making it 2-0 and very difficult for United to come back. If I remember correctly Barry Robson hit the woodwork 3 times during the match!! The 2nd half didn’t bring any goals giving Caley Thistle their first victory over Dundee United in history. Inverness CT eventually lost in the next round away to Livingston. The attendance was 1919. The teams were as follows: INVERNESS CT: Brown, Duncan, Dods, Munro, Morgan, Proctor, Hart, Fox, Wilson, Wyness, McAllister. Subs- Black (for McAllister), Fraser, Parratt, Finnigan, Brewster. DUNDEE UTD: Stillie, McCracken, Ritchie, Archibald, Wilson, Canero, Brebner, Duff, Robson, Miller, Fernandez. Subs- Samuel (for Duff), McIntyre (for Miller), McInnes (for Canero), Kenneth, McLean. The referee was John Underhill and there was only 1 booking on the day: Miller of Dundee Utd. Eight of the Inverness players who started the match still play for the club! FACTS BETWEEN THE TEAMS • All League meetings between the teams have taken place in the SPL. • Inverness CT have only lost one of the last 8 meetings in this fixture, however it was the most recent meeting of the two teams in December when Dundee Utd won 3-1. • Dundee Utd never lost any of the first 7 meetings between the teams. • The biggest wins was by 2 goals, both teams have won by this margin. • Inverness CT forward Gary McSwegan played for Dundee Utd. • The fixture produces an average of 2.4 goals per game. PLAYERS TO WATCH Ian Black (Inverness CT): Ian has been a great player for Inverness CT in his 3 years at the club, however it could have been even better if his crime count had a few less cards on it. He is a very aggressive midfielder who already has 11 yellow cards and 1 red card this season, in 22 games. However, Black is a great player as was shown by his performance against Celtic. It was one of his best games for the club and was part of the link-up for the goal. Before last Sunday, he was used to sitting on the bench however I believe after the Cup performance and Roy McBain’s suspension, he will start again. Has had an up and down season but is keen to end the season on a high. Barry Robson (Dundee Utd): One of Caley Thistle’s greatest players, Robson is one of the best left wingers in Scottish football, which is why he is pushing for a Scotland call-up. He started his career at Rangers as a youth before Inverness CT snapped up a bargain. He was loaned out to Forfar which only progressed him further as he later became a terrific player for Inverness in the first division. However he felt he could achieve greater things at Dundee Utd, and has since been captain and has just signed a new 4-year deal at the club. Has played in all 3 meetings between the clubs this season and has scored 9 goals all season. Squad: Ally Ridgers, Jonathon Smith, Michael Fraser, Darren Dods, Stuart Soane, Ross Tokely, Guy Kerr, Richard Hastings, Stuart McCaffrey, Grant Munro, John Rankin, Ian Black, Zander Sutherland, Alan Morgan, Richie Hart, Barry Wilson, Russell Duncan, Markus Paatelainen, Gary McSwegan, Rory McAllister, Graham Bayne Injured: Dennis Wyness (dislocated shoulder- out for season) Craig Dargo (dislocated shoulder) Suspended: Roy McBain

Inverness CT 1-2 Celtic - Scottish CUP

Leading 1-0 with just over two minutes to go things looked good for ICT. However Steven Pressley and Kenny Miller put paid to that with goals in 88 and 90 minutes to send ICT crashing out of the cup. Club Historian Ian Broadfoot supplies the official report from this game.

28th January 2007 Tulloch Caledonian Stadium, Inverness  INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE  1 (Bayne 18)  Team: Fraser, Tokely, Dods, Munro, Hastings, Rankin, Black (McSwegan 77), Duncan, McBain (Hart 46), Wilson (McAllister 86), Bayne Subs: McCaffrey & Ridgers
CELTIC  2 (Pressley, Miller 90) Team: Boruc, Wilson (Sheridan 73), Naylor, Pressley, McManus, Nakamura, Lennon, Hartley, Sno (Graveson 78), Jarosik (McGeady 65), Miller  Subs: Telfer & McGovern
Referee  Dougie McDonald  Attendance  7119  Man of the Match  Graham Bayne (ICT)
This was not just robbery – it was grand larceny! Just when it looked as if Caley Thistle were about to inflict a third Scottish Cup victory over Celtic – and a well deserved one – up popped Steven Pressley to head an equaliser two minutes from time. That was bad enough but Kenny Miller’s strike 50 seconds over time was devastating.
Charlie Christie: "It's an understatement to say I am gutted we are out of the cup...  It's a real sore one to take, even a draw would have been sore enough". The home side matched Celtic in every department and their 18th minute lead was no real surprise. If Graham Bayne’s second goal in 28 minutes had not been ruled out for offside it would have been all over.
Not surprisingly there was a strong build up to this third Scottish Cup meeting of the sides with great debate as to whether lightning could strike for a third time. With ICT wins in 2000 and 2003 Celtic clearly were taking nothing for granted and they travelled up two days ahead of the game.
Celtic absentees were the injured Craig Beattie, Maceij Zarowski and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. In addition Mark Brown was cup tied. Caley Thistle were still missing the injured Craig Dargo and Dennis Wyness.
In a surprise move Charlie Christie played Barry Wilson up front with Graham Bayne and Ian Black was recalled to midfield at the expense of Rory McAllister.
Ian Black hit a long range effort well wide in the second minute then Kenny Miller had a run through but his final shot was blocked by Mike Fraser’s legs. This was to be Celtic’s best first half chance.
After half-chances at both ends the home side took an 18th minute lead after a fine move. Black strode through the centre, found Barry Wilson on the left wing and he slipped the ball cleverly past Steven Pressley before sending it low across goal – Graham Bayne was first to react and he touched it home virtually unchallenged from six yards.
A Nakamura 15 yard shot was pushed away by Fraser in 25 minutes then three minutes later it was nearly 2-0. A long range Black shot was deflected and Artur Boruc could not hold it – Bayne slid in to score but offside was called. TV pictures confirmed that Bayne was a couple of feet offside when Black shot.
Just before the break a Nakamura free kick from the right reached a well-positioned Jiri Jarosik but he miskicked badly.
Half Time: 1-0
Into the second half and more of the same – Caley Thistle keeping Celtic at bay, creating chances and not in the least bit overawed. Celtic had a great chance to equalise in 54 minutes but Nakamura’s angled strike from the left thundered off the bar.
The pattern continued until a dramatic last few minutes. Two minutes from the end of the regulation 90 a Nakamura corner from the left was headed goalwards by Stephen McManus from 6 yards and Steven Pressley finished the job by heading in from a yard out.
There was worse to come a minute into the two minutes of added time. Nakamura sent a through ball to Miller, he played a one-two with Cillian Sheridan and Miller hit a curling low shot from 24 yards into the bottom corner for an amazing winner. He was booked for celebrating with the crowd but it was all over and a stunned Caley Thistle were out of the cup.
Full Time: 1-2 unbelievable
There was disbelief all round and not a few tears😪 Sadly it has to be back to the league.

PAST MEETINGS The teams have played a total of 12 times (9 League, 3 Cup) with 36 goals (12 Inverness CT, 23 Celtic) between them. Inverness CT: 2 wins (0 League, 2 Cup) Draws: 2 (2 League, 0 Cup) Celtic: 8 wins (7 League, 1 Cup) THE TWO FAMOUS NIGHTS 08/02/2000 (Scottish Cup 3rd Round) Celtic 1-3 INVERNESS CT: This game will always be remembered for all Inverness fans as this is regarded as the biggest result of Caley Thistle’s history so far. The original game was postponed due to apart of the roof falling off. In 16 minutes Barry Wilson headed in Paul Sheerin’s cross to the home fans shock. Mark Burchill scored a minute later but Bobby Mann restored the lead (some people say it was an own goal, but I call it Bobby’s goal!!). 10 minutes into the second half Paul Sheerin slotted home a penalty to the travelling fans delight. Steve Patterson was quoted as saying- “I think this is the moment Inverness arrived in Scottish football”. It sure was with the headline from the Sun reading “Super Caley Go Ballistic, Celtic Are Atrocious!!!!!!!”. The team for Inverness was as follows- Calder, Teasdale, Golabek, Mann, McCulloch, Hastings, Sheerin, Tokely (Byers 89), Wilson (Glancy 87), Christie and Wyness (Bavidge 79). 23/03/2003 (Scottish Cup Quarter-Final) INVERNESS CT 1-0 Celtic: Was lighting going to strike twice? It certainly was as even though Celtic had just beaten Liverpool, Inverness always believed they could do it. Even Bobby Mann mentioned before the game that he thought there would be another Highland Fling!! The only goal of the game was when Richie Hart pulled the ball across for Dennis Wyness to slot home. The second half seemed to last a life-time but eventually John Robertson had copied the heights of Steve Patterson. Two people’s performances I want to mention are Stuart McCaffrey for marking Larsson sensationally well and Mark Brown for making good saves and getting the Man of the Match. FACTS BETWEEN THE TEAMS • All League meetings between the teams have taken place in the SPL. • Inverness CT have never won a league match against Celtic. • John Hartson is the top scorer in the fixture with 7 goals. Dennis Wyness is the top scorer for Inverness CT with 3 goals. • Inverness CT have only lost twice to Celtic at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium in the 5 matches played in Inverness. Inverness have won 1, drawn the last 2 and lost 2. • This fixture produces an average of 3 goals per game. TOP SCORERS 7 goals: John Hartson (Celtic) 3 goals: Dennis Wyness (ICT) 2 goals: Barry Wilson (ICT), Craig Beattie (Celtic), Alan Thompson (Celtic), Shaun Maloney (Celtic), Vennegor of Hesselink (Celtic) 1 goal: Sheerin, Ritchie, Moravcik (own goal), Dargo Hart, Munro, Bayne (all ICT), Burchill, Petrov, Sutton, Dods (own goal), Bellamy, Jarosik, McManus, Pearson, Riordan (all Celtic), AN EXCITING WEEKEND With 3 non SPL teams still in the competition, the quarter-finals could through up a few more surprises. However, we could end up with 4 SPL teams in the semi-final, but that’s not going to happen, is it?? Firstly, on Saturday, 2 ties are taking place and both could produce shocks. Dunfermline, a team that just can’t find the net in the SPL have already knocked out Rangers and last year’s champions Hearts, and so will be looking to progress to the semi-finals at the expense of Partick Thistle. Both teams have already got experience of Scottish Cup semi-finals since the year 2000 so both are keen for a return to Hampden. I think Dunfermline will progress by the odd goal. At a packed Palmerston Park, Queen of the South will be looking to knock out one of the tournament favourites, Hibernian. If Celtic do get knocked out this weekend, Hibernian will become favourites to lift the cup and with already a CIS-cup final to look forward to, John Collins would be delighted to reach 2 cup finals in his first season in charge. However, Queen of the South will believe that having home advantage can help them produce a shock. I think this may well end in a draw, but Hibs again might just snatch a victory. On Sunday, live on sky sports, it is no doubt the tie of the round when Inverness CT take on Celtic for the 3rd time in this competition, and Celtic are still looking to progress at the expense of the Highlanders. In 2000 and 2003, Inverness produced 2 famous nights by beating Celtic 3-1 and 1-0 respectively. Inverness have never beaten Celtic in the league since their arrival in the SPL however the cup always has a different story, and Inverness will be looking to prove that lighting does strike 3 times!! Both teams didn’t want this tie but this is going to be an exciting match, due to the history these 2 have in the Scottish Cup. Will Caley go Ballistic again? St Johnstone have been impressive in the cups this year, after reaching the CIS-cup semi-final and just losing to Hibernian. Motherwell will have to be careful after St Johnstone knocked out Falkirk in the last round 3-0!! Owen Coyle’s side have already knocked out Dundee United and Rangers in the CIS Cup and will be looking to add Motherwell to their SPL scalps this season. Malpas will have his squad ready for this difficult tie but I believe a draw is on the cards for this game. Squad: Ally Ridgers, Jonathon Smith, Michael Fraser, Darren Dods, Stuart Soane, Ross Tokely, Guy Kerr, Richard Hastings, Stuart McCaffrey, Grant Munro, John Rankin, Ian Black, Roy McBain, Zander Sutherland, Richie Hart, Barry Wilson, Russell Duncan, Gary McSwegan, Rory McAllister, Graham Bayne Injured: Dennis Wyness (dislocated shoulder- out for season) Craig Dargo (dislocated shoulder) Alan Morgan (struggling to be fit) Suspended: Markus Paatelainen (cup-tied)

Motherwell 1-0 Inverness CT - SPL

MOTHERWELL 1-0 ICT:  Scott McDonald scored on the stroke of half-time to give Motherwell their first ever win against Caley Thistle at Fir Park. Overall, Well probably deserved the win and Caley Thistle's once fearsome away record continues to crumble - its now 9 away league games without victory!!!
Club Historian Ian Broadfoot supplies the official report from this game.
17th February 2007 Fir Park, Motherwell  MOTHERWELL  1 (McDonald 45) Team: Graeme Smith, Corrigan, Craigan, Reynolds, Murphy, Darren Lee Smith (McGarry 85), Kerr, Fitzpatrick, Paterson, Clarkson (McCormack 76), McDonald Subs: Keegan, Molloy, Quinn, Vadocz & Meldrum
INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE FC  0  Team: Fraser, Tokely, Dods, Munro, Hastings, Wilson, Duncan (Black 70), McBain, Rankin (Paatelainen 71), Bayne, McAllister (McSwegan 75) Subs: McCaffrey, Morgan, Soane & Ridgers

Motherwell’s Fir Park has been a happy hunting ground for Caley Thistle since reaching the SPL but not today. A single Scott McDonald goal on the stroke of half time was enough to give the Steelmen victory despite a second half comeback by the visitors.
"There was a lack of composure with some of the chances missed and I think in games like today you really see the value of Craig Dargo and Dennis Wyness" - Charlie Christie speaking on Official Site.
Christie retained the same starting eleven as last week which meant that, with Craig Dargo still injured – and Dennis Wyness out for the rest of the season – Rory McAllister partnered Graham Bayne up front. Mike Fraser continued to make the goalkeeping position his own in a display that saw him just pipped for the BBC ‘Man of the Match’ accolade by Mark Reynolds.
Motherwell’s David Clarkson had the first attempt on goal in the second minute but his header from Jim Paterson’s cross went past the post. At the other end Barry Wilson hit wide in eight minutes then Clarkson had a shot well blocked by Mike Fraser.
Scott McDonald fired wide in 14 minutes then in 23 minutes Clarkson went down in the Caley Thistle box while chasing a through ball with Fraser – Clarkson was booked for diving. Caley Thistle’s hopes of soaking up the pressure until half time were dashed just as the fourth official signalled one added minute of time. A high Danny Murphy free kick from the left edge of the box eluded the central defenders and McDonald headed home from six yards.
Half Time: 1-0
Despite this blow Caley Thistle came out in the second half in a determined mood but just could not find that accurate final touch. Rory McAllister hit off target in 50 and 56 minutes then in 64 minutes Graeme Smith took two attempts to gather a John Rankin volley.
In 70 minutes McAllister had another chance following a free kick but he hit just wide. With ten minutes left Mike Fraser did well to block a shot from substitute Ross McCormack and keep his side in the game. At the other end a Darren Dods header was cleared from the danger area by Stephen Craigan.
Eight minutes from time ICT substitutes Gary McSwegan and Markus Paatelainen combined but Graeme Smith did well to block the Finn’s shot. The visitors continued to press for an equaliser but it did not come and Motherwell took the points.
Full Time: 1-0
Eighth place was retained but on goal difference from Motherwell (who have two games in hand) and Dundee United who play Hibs on Sunday.
Dundee Utd V Hibs finished goalless so ICT slip to 9th and DUFC move up to eighth.
