ICT V Motherwell - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
The overall record between ICT and Motherwell is pretty even with 6 wins apiece and two draws so this may be a hard one to call for the neutrals. However, a strange statistic of this fixture is that six times out of the last seven matches it has ended with an away win so the smart money may be on Motherwell, especially with Ian Black, Ross Tokely and Barry Wilson all serving suspensions. However, Caley Thistle usually perform best under adversity so we are predicting a home win (of course). Andrew Fraser previews the game ...    Inverness CT v Motherwell Tulloch Caledonian Stadium Saturday 21st April at 3pm Referee: Craig MacKay Others: Stuart Macaulay, Mark Doyle (Assistants), John McKendrick (4th official)

Inverness CT: 6 wins (5 League, 1 Cup) Draws: 2 (1 League, 1 Cup(won by well on penalties)) Motherwell: 6 wins (4 League, 2 Cup) A GAME TO REMEMBER For this weeks game to remember we take you back another one of Inverness’s great cup killing shocks. On the 6th March 2004 in the Scottish Cup Quarter finals, Inverness CT were drawn away to Motherwell. Inverness were going strong in the league and we full of confidence heading to Fir Park. What we didn’t know was that Barry Wilson was to score a wonder goal. Both teams started the game well but after 10 mins, Inverness took the lead thanks to goal of the season by Wilson. Barry received the ball 35 yards+ from goal and he chested it and striked a half volley that dipped over Marshall. By far goal of the round. Motherwell never really got going throughout the match and Inverness CT had a few chances to finish the tie in the second half but they eventually held out to reach the semi-finals for the first ever time in their history. The look on Barry’s face at the end of the game showed how much it meant to him as he was delighted. The attendance was 7930. The teams were as follows: INVERNESS CT: Brown, Tokely, Mann, McCaffrey, Golabek, McBain, Duncan, Thomson, Wilson, Ritchie, Keogh. Subs- Munro (for Thomson), Proctor (for Ritchie), Fraser, Hart, McMillan. MOTHERWELL: Marshall, Quinn, Corrigan, Craigan, Hammell, Lasley, Adams, Fagan, Burns, McDonald, Clarkson. Subs- O’Donnell (for Fagan), Wright (for Clarkson), Corr, K.McDonald, Kinniburgh. The referee was Kenny Clark and there were NO bookings on the day. Six (including Golabek) of the Inverness players who started the match still play for the club. FACTS BETWEEN THE TEAMS • All League meetings between the teams have taken place in the SPL. • Only twice has a team scored 3 or more goals in this fixture and both teams have had the joy. Inverness CT were the latest in one of the fixtures this season winning 4-1 away at Fir Park. • There has only been TWO home victories in this fixture. Both teams have had the honour, with the most recent being Motherwell in the most recent fixture. • This fixture has an average of 2.1 goals per meeting. AND SO THE FINAL STRAIGHT It is almost the end of April and here we go again, the SPL has split into 2 separate leagues for the remaining 5 games. There are still a few places to sort out but the majority has already been decided. I take a look at how the top six and bottom six will finish. The top six It is looking very likely that Celtic will wrap up the title this weekend. If both Celtic and Rangers achieve the same result or Celtic go one better, the SPL title will be already secured with 4 games to go. Celtic will be champions and Rangers look likely to secure the 2nd champions league spot and finish runners-up in the league. There are 2 teams battling for 3rd place and with it the UEFA Cup place. Aberdeen currently occupies it but Hearts are only 3pts behind. Then with only a slight chance of moving up the table Kilmarnock are 5th, 8pts behind Hearts and Hibernian in 6th, a further 2pts behind. The bottom six The relegation fight looks likely to go to the end and will end up being the only excitement. Meanwhile the 4 teams in 7th to 10th place- Falkirk, Dundee Utd, Inverness CT and Motherwell respectively- are all aiming to finish best of the bottom six, which Inverness CT did last season with 5 very impressive clean sheets and with it 5 wins. Each place is worth a reported £70,000 so hopefully these 4 teams will aim to play good football in order to finish as high as they can. One thing the 4th teams in 7th to 10th place could play a part in is who will be relegated from the SPL this season. Dunfermline are only 4pts behind St Mirren and have won 2 out of their 3 recent SPL fixtures. It will hopefully go down to the last day of the season when Dunfermline play Falkirk and St Mirren take on Inverness CT. So then, will this season end with major talking points? Will Rangers actually do the unthinkable and finish 1st, or even 4th!!! Will Hibernian be able to finish on a high with the turmoil between the players and the management team at the moment? Will Inverness CT do what they did last season and win 5 games with 5 clean sheets? Who will beat the drop between St Mirren and Dunfermline? Let’s just hope the fans are treated so some good football as all the clubs aims to achieve the highest position possible. Squad: Ally Ridgers, Michael Fraser, Darren Dods, Stuart Soane, Guy Kerr, Richard Hastings, Stuart McCaffrey, Grant Munro, John Rankin, Roy McBain, Zander Sutherland, Alan Morgan, Richie Hart, Russell Duncan, Markus Paatelainen, Craig Dargo, Gary McSwegan, Rory McAllister, Garry Wood, Graham Bayne

BANK OF SCOTLAND SOCCER SIGHT LAUNCHES AT INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE FOOTBALL CLUB (ICT FC)
Saturday 7th April: Inverness CT FC Board Chairman Alan Savage, Ian Black, Eleanor Ellison (RNIB), Falkirk FC Managing Director George Craig and Alec Watson (Falkirk FC guest commentator) were delighted to launch the Bank of Scotland Soccer Sight initiative at Inverness CT FC’s fixture last weekend. Six members of the Inverness visually impaired community took full advantage of the new facilities and were thrilled with the improvement it made to their match day experience.
In the UK alone, it is estimated that over two million people live with sight problems, which limits their enjoyment of live matches. The aim of Bank of Scotland Soccer Sight is to improve facilities and accessibility for such fans. This is facilitated through providing specialist commentary equipment to Premierleague clubs, allowing commentators words to paint a picture of a games action in to the minds of their audience.
Adele Mills, Sponsorship Manager at Bank of Scotland, said “One of the key reasons Bank of Scotland supports Scottish sport is to encourage as many people as possible to have access to their favourite games. Soccer Sight is a fantastic initiative to enable blind or partially–sighted football fans to attend a game, follow every kick of the ball and enjoy the experience of a Premierleague match.”
Alan Savage, Inverness CT FC Board Chairman commented, “Inverness CT FC are committed to ensuring our facilities are accessible to every supporter. The launch of Bank of Scotland Soccer Sight has been a great success; we must build on this momentum so fans are provided with a valuable service for years to come”.
Eleanor Ellison, RNIB Manager Recreation and Well-being added, “Its fantastic Bank of Scotland Soccer Sight has been so well received in Inverness. Fans can now anticipate top quality commentary to be a permanent fixture at the Tulloch stadium, ensuring their match day experience is significantly enhanced. Special thanks must go to Bank of Scotland for all their support”.

Player of the Year Update

Teaser Paragraph:
Barry Wilson looks almost certain to be crowned the CaleyThistleOnline Player of the Year for season 2006/07. The veteran winger has been in inspired form this season and has been at or near the top of the rankings for most of the season. Mark Brown was the other player who was fighting it out with Barry in the early months, but his move to Celtic in the transfer window left the way clear for Barry to lay claim to this year's prize.
Mark is still in second spot after impressive points tallies in September, October and December but only Graham Bayne or John Rankin can mathematically catch Barry in the remaining games.
Player Total Votes POY Points Barry Wilson 175 59 Mark Brown 141 48 Graham Bayne 132
35 John Rankin 144 32 Ian Black 136 28 With six games left (voting wise), there is a maximum of 30 points still available to every player. A full 30 point haul of points would be enough for Graham Bayne or John Rankin to overtake Barry, but each of them would have to put in a man-of-the-match performance in every one of the remaining games whilst hoping that Barry didnt earn any points to add to his total.  With Barry being injured in last weekend's game, and not certain to start the last five, it may be unlikely to happen, but it is still possible.
Whatever happens, as none of the aforementioned players have won it before, this years award will see the seventh annual CaleyThistleOnline (official) Internet Player of the Year award go to the seventh different player in its history.
(full rankings and past history available HERE)
The monthly awards are also indicative of the overall result. Ian Black was Player of the Month in August before Mark Brown and Barry Wilson took over at the top for September, October and November. John Rankin was the fans' choice in December primarily because of a stellar performance against Rangers just after Christmas and Graham Bayne received the accolades in January with good performances against both St Mirren and Celtic.

ICT Player of the Month 2006/07 Month Player Votes August 2006 Ian Black 59 September 2006 Mark Brown 26 October 2006 Mark Brown 26 November 2006 Barry Wilson 25 December 2006 John Rankin 26 January 2007 Graham Bayne 25 February 2007 Barry Wilson 25 March 2007 Markus Paatelainen 37 February's Player of the Month was a hard one to call. Russell Duncan got the plaudits for his performance against Dundee United in the cup, Ross Tokely was the top performer against Hearts and both Barry Wilson and Graham Bayne got top marks against Motherwell. Ian Black, Graham Bayne and Barry Wilson picked up the vast majority of the votes for the Celtic game in the cup but overall, over the course of the month, it was Barry who acquired the most individual votes to pip Tokely, Duncan, Black and Bayne in the closest monthly vote ever.
Barry was clear winner of the vote in the first game in March (Dundee United) but it was new signing Markus Paatelainen who rose to the top in the games against Kilmarnock and Dunfermline. Russell Duncan was the top man in the recent game at Ibrox but no-one managed to get anywhere near Markus' total votes for the month.
With two more monthly winners to come, the question is, will Graham or John be able to catch Barry ...... we will see

Inverness CT 1-1 Falkirk - SPL

A pretty even match finishes as a 1-1 draw. Falkirk scored in the 80th minute but John Rankin equalised 6 minutes later (his 4th against Falkirk this season) to save a point for Caley Thistle. Club Historian Ian Broadfoot reports on the game from the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium.
ICT 1-1 FALKIRK
7th April 2007 Tulloch Caledonian Stadium, Inverness  INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE FC  1 (Rankin 86)  Team: Fraser, Tokely, McCaffrey, Munro, Hastings, Wilson (McBain 66), Duncan (McAllister 82), Hart, Rankin, Dargo, Bayne Subs: Paatelainen, Wood, Soane, Sutherland & Ridgers
FALKIRK  1 (Finnigan 80)  Team: Schmeichel, Ross, Holden (Scobbie 48), Barr, Milne, Cregg, Latapy (Craig 75), Thomson, O'Donnell, Moutinho (Finnigan 68), Gow Subs: Lima, McStay, Uras & Lambers
Referee  Crawford Allan  Attendance  4435  Man of the Match  Richie Hart (ICT)   Not a great game but it had its exciting moments. Caley Thistle could have had it sewn up by half time but nothing quite came off and it was Falkirk who opened the scoring with ten minutes left. John Rankin came to the rescue with a late equaliser.   Ian Black’s suspension continued and Darren Dods missed one game as a result of his red card at Ibrox. Stuart McCaffrey came into central defence, Markus Paatelainen dropped to the bench, Barry Wilson came back into the starting eleven, Richie Hart continued in midfield, Roy McBain returned from injury to a bench slot and young striker Garry Wood joined the squad for the first time. Falkirk striker Carl Finnigan came back from suspension but started on the bench.   ICT could have taken the lead in two minutes when an attack led to a loose ball which broke well for Wilson and left him one-on-one with Kasper Schmeichel – his low shot was saved by the legs of the ‘keeper and Wilson hit the rebound wide.   A minute later and there could have been a goal at the other end. Alan Gow sent a high free kick from the right and Dean Holden headed goalwards from the back post. It ran parallel to the goal line and over for a goal kick at the far side.   Schmeichel once more rescued Falkirk in 14 minutes when he tipped over a 25 yard dipping volley from Hart. In 34 minutes Rankin produced the shot of the match when he sent an angled ball from long distance on the left towards the top right corner. It curled beautifully but went just past the angle of the bar.   Half Time: 0-0   Falkirk had clearly been spoken to firmly at half time as they came out with more determination. Despite this Mike Fraser had little to do as the defence held firm under early second-half pressure. In 59 minutes Schmeichel did well to dive and hold a Hart ball across goal then in 69 minutes a good home move led to a blocked Craig Dargo shot from 20 yards.   The Bairns took the lead with ten minutes left when substitute Finnigan took a pass on the right wing and was allowed to continue despite strong offside claims. He raced ahead and hit an angled shot low into the net for 1-0.   Rory McAllister was sent on for Russell Duncan as the home side played three up front in search of an equaliser. It came in 86 minutes when a long Grant Munro throw from the left was returned to him and he sent a high ball into the box – Rankin managed to get a good touch on it and send the ball into the top corner for the equaliser.   There was a hectic finish and Caley Thistle nearly snatched a late winner when Dargo rounded Schmeichel on the left but a defender cleared the danger. Twice in added time Schmeichel had to punch clear but the final whistle went and it ended 1-1.   Full Time: 1-1   Caley Thistle moved up one place to ninth. Dunfermline beat Hibs 1-0 and the relegation issue has not quite been settled.

ICT V Falkirk - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
With the 'membership' of the top and bottom six already decided, Celtic mathematically on the brink of confirming their title, and most other teams at worst only three points away from ensuring any relegation dogfight only contains St Mirren and Dunfermline, this final pre-split fixture may seem 'meaningless' but it is a chance for Caley Thistle to perhaps try out a few things for next season whilst also trying to finish as high as possible in the table. Andrew Fraser previews the match. Inverness CT v Falkirk Tulloch Caledonian Stadium Saturday 7th April at 3pm SPL Referee: Crawford Allan Others: Keith Sorbie, Steve Pullar (Assistants), Euan Norris (4th official).
Tickets: Cash gates will be available on the day. TV-info: LIVE commentary on BBC Radio Scotland. FIXTURES Saturday 7th April Aberdeen v Dundee Utd Celtic v Motherwell Dunfermline v Hibernian Hearts v Kilmarnock Inverness CT v Falkirk Sunday 8th April St Mirren v Rangers (Setanta, 2pm) Then the SPL splits into two separate leagues where each team plays 5 more games. SPL RECENT RESULTS Saturday 31st March Dundee Utd (Daly) 1-1 Celtic (Nakamura) Falkirk (Moutinho, O’Donnell) 2-0 St Mirren Kilmarnock (Naismith) 1-2 Aberdeen (Fowler o.g, Anderson) Motherwell (McDonald 2) 2-0 Dunfermline Rangers (Adam) 1-1 Inverness CT (Dargo) Sunday 1st April Hibernian 0-1 Hearts (Zaliukas) Tuesday 3rd April Motherwell 0-1 Kilmarnock (Nish) Wednesday 4th April St Mirren (Sutton) 1-1 Hibernian (Jones) PAST MEETINGS The teams have played a total of 27 times (26 League, 1 Cup) with 87 goals (41 Inverness CT, 46 Falkirk) between them. Inverness CT: 8 wins (8 League, 0 Cup) Draws: 6 (6 League, 0 Cup) Falkirk: 13 wins (12 League, 1 Cup) FACTS BETWEEN THE TEAMS • There have been 20 1st Division games and 6 SPL games between the teams. • There has only been 1 cup game between the teams, which took place earlier this season in Inverness with Falkirk winning 1-0. • The teams average 3.2 goals a game in the fixtures between these two teams. • The biggest win in the fixture was when Inverness CT beat the Bairns 4-1 at the Falkirk Stadium on the 21/01/2006. Goals from Wilson, Wyness, Dargo and Tokely gave Caley Thistle a comfortable victory. Ireland scored a consolation for Falkirk. • The last meeting between the team finished 3-1 to Falkirk. After Inverness started strongly in the Falkirk Stadium, Falkirk quickly ran to a 3-0 half time thanks to an Anthony Stokes hat-trick in his last game for the club. Then it got worse for the Highlanders as Ian Black got sent off for kicking a training ball away. But 10-man Inverness defended well in the second half with a John Rankin cracker giving Inverness some consolation. The attendance was 4516. PLAYERS TO WATCH Stuart McCaffrey (Inverness CT): The ex-Aberdeen defender is likely to play on Saturday due to the suspension of Darren Dods, the man that 'stole' his place in the team way back in 2004. Dods got sent off after only 14 minutes at Ibrox last Saturday, and so Christie had no alternative but to sacrifice Paatelainen and bring on McCaffrey. Stuart had a great game and will have given fans some positive feeling for next season when it is likely Munro and himself will partner each other in the centre of the defence. McCaffrey must be given credit for staying at Inverness and trying to fight for his place and let’s hope that next season his patience is rewarded. Russell Latapy (Falkirk): The veteran midfielder is a key member of the Bairns set-up and if Falkirk were to lose him next season, it would be a big loss for John Hughes to deal with. He starred in last weeks 2-0 victory over St Mirren, as his master class shone throughout the game. I am sure the youngsters at Falkirk are benefiting from his experience and it will be interesting to see if he remains at the Falkirk Stadium for one more season. Squad: Ally Ridgers, Jonathon Smith, Michael Fraser, Stuart Soane, Ross Tokely, Guy Kerr, Richard Hastings, Stuart McCaffrey, Grant Munro, John Rankin, Roy McBain, Zander Sutherland, Alan Morgan, Richie Hart, Barry Wilson, Russell Duncan, Markus Paatelainen, Craig Dargo, Gary McSwegan, Rory McAllister, Graham Bayne Injured: Dennis Wyness (dislocated shoulder- out for season) Suspended: Ian Black Darren Dods History H / A / N Matches W D L Goals + / - H 4 2 0 2 5 - 6 -1 A 3 2 0 1 7 - 4 +3 N 0 0 0 0 0 - 0 +0 Total 7 4 0 3 12 - 10 +2 Date&time Comp. Club Historian retires

Teaser Paragraph:
Statistically speaking, it’s the end of an era ….. Charlie Christie, Ross Tokely and Grant Munro often get touted as stalwarts of the club whose dedication and loyalty epitomise the Caley Thistle spirit but there is another person, usually in the background, whose contribution has been just as immense and that is Club Historian Ian Broadfoot who has decided to hang up his quill at the end of this season after many years of meticulous record keeping and match reporting.
Ian has kept records of every competitive match that Caley Thistle have played since their formation in 1994 and most of the non-competitive ones as well. He has also been responsible for supplying official match reports and a weekly, monthly and yearly set of statistics that is used by this website, the club and media outlets around the country.
If you visited the club shop in its early days (before it moved to the portacabin) you would find Ian in there along with Peter McCallum volunteering their time to assist both the club and fans by running the shop for the club. If you have ever picked up a set of team lines, chances are it was Ian who wrote and printed them for you.
In 2004, Ian became the second person to write a book about Caley Thistle. Charles Bannerman’s book “Against All Odds” detailed the tangled and painful path that led to the formation of Caley Thistle whilst Ian’s book “Going Ballistic” chronicled the first ten years of the new club and he was lucky enough to have the perfect ending to it provided for him by the team as they not only won the Bells Cup but were also crowned first division champions and promoted to the SPL in the final chapter !!
More recently, Ian was involved in the formation of the ICT Supporters Trust and has also acted as the press liaison at the club on matchdays. To be totally accurate (as an article about our meticulous statistician must be), the formation of the trust took place ‘more recently’ but the discussions about forming one began many years ago and Ian was a part of this from the very beginning as a representative of the members’ club.
In short, you may not have known much about him but if you have ever read a report, looked up match or club stats, read his book, watched a member of the press interview Charlie or one of the players after a match, or joined the supporters’ trust then his service to the club and attention to detail have probably enhanced your enjoyment of following Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC.
On behalf of the site and its users we thank Ian deeply and sincerely for his contribution to the club and its fans. I would also like to thank Ian personally as it was he who first gave this site legitimacy by allowing us to use his reports. Because of Ian’s reports we were able to persuade people such as Programme editor Bryan Munro to supply player profiles, Gordon Gillespie and Ken MacPherson to supply photographs and the club to eventually recognise us as the official site. As everyone knows, we have gone through a few changes since then but it was Ian who helped us establish the site without ever being directly involved and for this we are extremely thankful.
Although Ian is retiring from both his ‘normal’ job and this ‘weekend job’ he will not be leaving the scene entirely.
He has been asked to help in the creation of the proposed Inverness Football Museum. The museum idea has gained prominence recently with the club endorsing it and suggesting it can find space at the stadium to house any artifacts, but it is something that has been close to Ian's heart for a few years now because of all the memorabilia he has collected personally or has been given over the years that will be donated to the museum. We are sure he will tackle this as enthusiastically and as meticulously as he did with his reporting and stats.
Ian is also helping Clach Football club to bring their historical records up to date and will continue to supply his ICT statistics. However, he will not be at the stadium each week in any official capacity and will no longer be able to supply the official match reports which will leave a big hole that the club and this site will need to try and fill …….
Ian, once again we thank you for your contribution over many years and wish you well in your retirement – even though retirement sounds as though it may be just as busy or even busier than you are now.

Rangers 1-1 Inverness CT - SPL

Craig Dargo made a welcome return to the starting lineup and scored the late equaliser that ensured the Caley Jags will finish the season undefeated against Rangers.
It all looked so different in the early stages when Darren Dods was sent off for a 'last man' challenge and Charlie Adam scored from the resultant free kick, but the team regrouped and came away with a point after the late equaliser. Club Historian Ian Broadfoot reports from Ibrox.
RANGERS 1-1 ICT
31st March 2007 Ibrox Stadium, Glasgow  RANGERS  1 (Adam 14)   Team: McGregor, Hutton, Weir, Papac, Murray, Novo (Burke 67), Ferguson, Hemdani, Adam, , Boyd, Prso (Sebo 81) Subs: Robinson, Thomson, Ehiogu , McMillan & Shinnie
INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE FC  1 (Dargo 81)  Team: Fraser, Tokely, Dods, Munro, Hastings, Duncan, Rankin, Hart (Wilson 72), Paatelainen (McCaffrey 20), Dargo (McSwegan 90), Bayne  Subs: Soane, Sutherland, McAllister & Ridgers
 Referee  William Collum  Attendance  50278
With two wins already over Rangers this season Caley Thistle were looking for the hat-trick. They did not quite make it but a 1-1 draw at Ibrox with ten men was about as close as it gets.
The Caley Thistle side was shuffled as Grant Munro returned from suspension and Ian Black started a three-game ban. Richie Hart came in for Barry Wilson, Craig Dargo and John Rankin returned to the starting line-up and it was back to the bench for Stuart McCaffrey and Gary McSwegan – in McCaffrey’s case for just 20 minutes.
Not surprisingly Rangers came at the visitors from the start and Dado Prso sent Barry Ferguson through in six minutes - Michael Fraser was up to the task and he blocked well. Prso then went down in the box but penalty claims were ignored by the referee. In 13 minutes Darren Dods departed early for a last-man foul on Kris Boyd and Charlie Adam netted the resultant free kick from 25 yards.
Ross Tokely temporarily moved into the middle of the back four but in 20 minutes Markus Paatelainen was sacrificed for Stuart McCaffrey and there was to be a successful rehearsal of the likely defensive line-up after Dods heads for Tannadice in the summer. Ian Murray took a high ball into the box in 25 minutes but his curling shot went over the bar. As half time approached, Grant Munro headed wide of the Rangers’ goal and a Prso volley went wide at the other end.
Half Time: 1-0
Rangers had chances to extend their lead after the break but an Alan Hutton cross was headed wide by Prso then in 62 minutes Fraser blocked a Boyd effort.
Boyd blasted over from eight yards in 74 minutes and the visitors began to create chances at the Rangers’ end. Alan McGregor tipped over a Russell Duncan effort, a curling ball from substitute Barry Wilson went over the bar then the home fans were stunned nine minutes from time when ICT equalised. Richard Hastings crossed from the left, Graham Bayne played it from the back post across goal and Craig Dargo knocked it over the line from a few yards out. Ibrox began to empty of Rangers’ fans as the reality of two dropped points hit home.
Full Time: 1-1
The whistle went and a happy band of away supporters headed back up the A9. With one game left before the split ICT remain tenth but there is a clear gap between them and bottom clubs St Mirren and Dunfermline.
