  1. But the bottom line has to be that it's completely absurd that Scotttish football should have the albatross of Irish religion and politics hanging round its neck in the manner in and extent to which it does.

Absurd maybe, but it is the raison d'etre for the old firm. And they are interdependent - without one, the other could not have existed.

  2. But I can buy the ticket with a credit card in the shop with no fee but because I use the phone it's ?2.50.I understand the don't want to sell ticket on match day but ?2.50 is a bit much for one child's ticket. I have bought stuff online from the shop and picked it up on match day with no fees.as I said it's just a charge for fans that don't live in Inverness.

Yes, I know exactly where you're coming from and it is a scam - no doubt about it.

Normally I'll take a chance and buy my ticket(s)on match-day, however, in the more high-profile games it's safer to buy them in advance and pick them up on the day of the match. So when you buy them by phone and pay by card, a booking fee is applied, which, when added to the cost of travel (nearly a 300 mile round trip to a home game in my case) makes the whole package less attractive.

It all adds to the cost of supporting your local team, I suppose.

  3. Just back from the match (OK - there were a few diversions on the long road home) and just in time for the BBC highlights which did not do us justice at all, although the pundits agreed the red card was rather dubious.

The majority of times we are outplayed by the old firm, but occasionally we've been lucky and managed to get a result - put it down to brilliant tactics, or luck, whatever.

Yesterday, however, we were right on top. We held our shape and dominated the first half. Throughout the game we made Celtic look very ordinary. I was most surprised that Tansey was sent off for a fairly innocuous challenge - what surprised me more was the apparent anger of the referee when he made his judgement, and the impulsiveness of that decision. The stand-side linesman looked uncomfortable with the decision, but chose not to intervene. Even after that appalling decision the heads didn't go down and we continued to look dangerous right up to half time.

Into the second half and the extra man started to show. We still looked dangerous in attack, and we still kept our shape, but Celtic started to come into the game. The balance shifted after their goal but we still looked capable of scoring and I was quite optimistic. Sadly when Celtic got their second, the heads went down and there was no going back, although a late rally might have got us a consolation.

Standouts for me were Davies and Tokely who were pretty solid. Also Tade and Hayes who caused their defence a lot of problems.

I can't remember when I last felt such a deep sense of injustice at losing a game - I'm not in the habit of slating referees but there was something seriously amiss yesterday.

  4. I think the frequent reference to journey-men in this thread and similar discussions is quite significant.

What we have here is a Highland-based team largely manned by players with no real passion for the town they supposedly represent. And why should they - they weren't born here, they don't belong here and they have no intention of living here any longer than their loan spell/shop-window time.

They must clearly be motivated as it's in their professional interests to perform well on the pitch, something which, as yet, doesn't seem to be happening.

To my mind, that is the nature of our current problem and it's the manager's job to sort it out. I'm certainly not calling for Butcher's head - I am confident he's up to the job.

Just wish he'd hurry up!

  5. The one last concern that I do have, however, is the presence of so many loanees in the team --as someone said above he should be trying to get in players for the future and not just for stopgaps.

A very good point - this doesn't bode well for the beginning of next season either.

  6. Paying back what you owe is one of the most basic laws of civilization.

I find it quite sad that the emphasis nowadays seems to be about avoiding repaying debts, hiring smart lawyers or specialist firms to find loopholes that relieve people of their moral obligations. And now countries.

I get really pssed off too with cold-callers offering to help me write off my debts - no win, no fee. Somebody has to pay, and if it's not the debtor, it's probably you and me.

    :irritated:

  7. Don't have a problem with the quality of the ins (and generally the outs).

My problem is the lack of time the majority of the squad will have trained together by the start of the season. At the start of last season we had a stable, balanced team - they enjoyed working together and the crack among the squad was great. This time around there'll be a lot of strangers trying to get to know each other.

I expect a slow start this season.

  8. No a bad plan CaleyD but I can see it being unpopular with teams who may expect to be in the top 6, e.g. Hearts, Dundee United, O.F. for the loss in revenue playing against supposedly lesser teams post-split. And of course one less O.F. derby, which may appeal to the police but perhaps not to the clubs and TV companies. Theoretically we may only have 3 O.F. derbies in a season under your proposed system, whereas under the current system it is very unlikely there'll be less than 4.

To prevent the scenario where a club in the bottom 6 may have more points than clubs in the top 6, why not just award all teams who make the top 6 an extra 15 points.

  9. Some things haven't changed though. Take the price of colour tellys for example.

Of course kids sometimes get into the TCS free now. Don't remember that at Telford Street!

10 shillings was a lot of money in 1970, the receipt of which had a similar impact on a 12-year-old as probably a tenner would have today, which is consistent with Charles's Cream Egg Inflation factor.
