I imagine any really good DJ would consider themselves to be artists just as much as musicians, and Fat Boy makes up his own tunes as well as mix other peoples. And theres plenty of stuff way cheesier than FBS, thats just a matter of taste. I think the problem with old people ( :001:) and dance music is that you've missed out on a relevant time period and or substances which can act like a switch so you instantly understand what the crack is with it. Its a very distinct moment of revelation and usually accompanied by some outstanding clever tunes by the likes of Underworld, Chemical Brothers, Hybrid any On-U sounds (for the oldies!!) or Nubreed, theres plenty more. An event like Rockness, where there's 23000 people all been led the same way through a set of tunes by the DJ who all share the same understanding of dance music is a collective experience you don't get very often, maybe at a really fantastic gig by a brilliant artist but its not the norm by any means. Swamptrash used to be able to do that to an audience on a regular basis but they had some sort of magic going on as well. I know exactly where you're coming from as I too was ignorant of it all once but once the switch flicked on I understood it all perfectly. As I said, you really had to be there. :003:
