indeed I think he would ! I try to pay little heed to those who are offended on behalf of others ... especially when the others are not actually offended ! One of the great things about living where I do is that the city is so diverse that I could tick so many of these 'PC' boxes if I wanted to use adjectives in front of the word friend .... and these friends can be just as Non-PC as anyone else ... especially after a few beers ;)

Despite the success of TFC they are still the 'lesser' team in MLSE eyes ... The Maple Leafs and Raptors who play at the ACC are the golden boys and i guess get more retail space because they both play in that venue. The retail outlets in the stadium on game day are pretty well stocked. I usually buy my stuff at the stadium (15% discount for season ticket holders) or at National Sports where it is less expensive than official outlets even including the discount. The 'champions' stuff and replica tops with the gold star above the crest have been selling out almost as quickly as they come in. MLS also changed the approved online merchandise providers to 'FANatics' recently. The online store is pretty good and a flat rate of $24.95 shipping for international orders. https://www.mlsstore.com/toronto-fc/t-47126986+z-9389073-83814288

RealSports at the Air Canada Centre / MLSE Headquarters has merchandise for all their teams (Raptors, Maple Leafs, TFC) . The matchday shops are inside the ground and open when there is a game on ... Sportchek, National Sports, and various other retailers all stock the tops, tshirts and hoodies as well.

Trying to keep all my Toronto FC postings in here ... apart from the odd mention in the matchday threads ! After winning it all last season ... and becoming the first team in MLS history to do the treble of domestic cup (Canadian Championship), Supporters Shield (equivalent to league champions) and MLS Cup ... there is a 4th trophy on the wish-list this year for TFC. The CONCACAF Champions League. This is the equivalent of the UEFA Champions League albeit not to the same quality but does still feature some strong teams from Mexico and other Central American and Caribbean countries and provides the winner with entry to the Club World Cup to be staged in Dubai in December. For the last 9 years it has been won by Mexican teams and on 7 of those occasions it was Mexican -V- Mexican teams in the final ! Only Salt Lake and Montreal from MLS have competed in the final in the last 10 years. So far this year TFC have edged out MLS rivals Colorado Rapids as well as current Liga MX Apertura champions Tigres UANL. On Tuesday they faced perennial powerhouses Club America who are 7 time winners of the Champions League and 12 time Liga MX winners. In typical CONCACAF fashion it was a rip-roarer of a night. The rain was pelting down, TFC won 3-1, there were accusations by the Mexican coach of Police brutality and that the referee made them change their underwear (!!!?) and from TFC manager that one of ours got an elbow to the face in the tunnel at half-time. The CCTV footage should be fun to watch when they release it .... Next week its off to Mexico and the famed Azteca stadium for the 2nd leg ... or in my case, a beer in front of the TV ! Its a standing joke about the officiating in Mexico and 3-1 may not be a big enough cushion ... but TFC fans were heartened when CONCACAF announced yesterday that the ref for this game will not be from CONCACAF but one of the top rated FIFA refs from the Asian Federation. Its part of a new referee exchange programme between the two federations [source] Took a ton of pictures at the game on Tuesday : click the image below to get to my Flickr Album for anyone interested

Great game, pissing rain, dodgy ref, accusations from their manager in the press conference that 3 players were assaulted by police, and in our conference that one TFC player was elbowed by a Club America official ... just another night in the competition that is CONCACAF ! The second leg at the Azteca stadium in Mexico next week should be quite something !

With 8 games in 25 days it seems sensible to rest one or two for the challenges ahead ... but yes, I agree, hope it does not backfire.

going to have to rely on the moderators and/or @CaleyD for updates today. Midweek games play havoc with my schedule ! Updates will be few and far between from me ..... Working until the game is almost done then heading down to BMO Field for the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League Semi-Final between TFC and Mexican powerhouse Club America !! fingers crossed for a good night and no refereeing controversies.

This is the main thing for most I think and this is a global problem ! The referees in MLS are moving towards full time. 4 or 5 years ago I think there were 4 full time, now this article from 2016 says 14. Its also an interesting read in regards to the errors and inconsistency thing. Hard to find payment info for anything past 2014 for MLS refs but they allegedly get around $800 fee per game and yearly salary (I assume for the full-timers) is in the region of $200,000 (source) ... interestingly, one of the most notorious refs in MLS (Baldomero Toledo) comments about how things used to be with refs only meeting up once or twice a year (basically for the aforementioned piss up !)
-
I hear you ... and agree to an extent .... The complete and utter roasters will always be that way and you will not sway those arrogant refs who think themselves so infallible that VAR will not assist them. It is also not available for every match incident (a good thing) . However, after seeing it in action for more than a year, I would have to say its a valuable tool. The current format of only using it for certain game incidents is well balanced and does not delay the game by any significant amount. The VAR official is basically looking at the same screens the TV guys are and analysing it in real-time just like they do too. He sends info back to the main ref quickly to say he is reviewing and if the ref has any sense at all - and the ones that are not at the extreme end of the spectrum do seem to have that - then they listen and use technology to assist with their decision. Ultimately its the ref's decision and some choose to ignore the VAR input but after the game they have had pelters and in some cases been (unofficially) demoted to lesser games for future weeks .... It had long been a frustration for TFC fans that we had this huge screen at one end of the pitch and TFC's own operators of that screen streamed live action and instant replays to it but the refs never looked at it ... turned out that it was because not every stadium had a big screen so they were explicitly told by the league to turn away from the screen and not to let it influence their decision !!! At least now with VAR they have that facility and have also been told to use it where it exists and if its on the blink then just referee as it it was pre-VAR times. Was skeptical before it went in but overall you dont really notice it and it has helped. The question however is if it would help in Scotland? Are there enough cameras and angles at a game to make it viable.
-
Its a global disease ... refs are s*** worldwide with the odd exception. The best you can hope for is consistency (good or bad) so at least you know what to expect. Looking at the highlights here, it seems the ref was a total roaster !!! Will take the word of those who saw it in person, but a few of the decisions that made it into the highlights seemed baffling to say the least. In MLS they are going into their second season of testing of VAR (Video Assisted Refereeing) for FIFA under the leadership of former EPL referee Howard Webb. This explains it better than I can. I would say that on the whole the test seems to be working well. Its not over-used and they have a specific (named) VAR referee sitting up in the stand watching the monitors as shown on the video. The refs seem to come to a decision quickly and it has probably helped more than hindered ... however, the element of control still lies with the ref and if they are a roaster then VAR cant really help that !

*** VOTING IN THE POLL ABOVE IS FOR PEOPLE WHO WERE AT THE MATCH ONLY *** If you were at the match, please use the poll above to vote for your top 3 players. As a bit of fun, we have also added an option to rate the referee .... Please make sure you vote for 3 separate players. If you make an error, let us know so we can fix it. PLEASE ONLY VOTE ABOVE IF YOU WERE AT THE GAME Anyone caught trying to cheat the system WILL be banned from voting in ALL site polls...this is your only warning. **NOT at the game ?** As a result of requests received, we have made a slight change to how these threads work for site users who watched the game on TV or listened to the full game live on the radio ....... You too will now be able to cast your votes, but should do it in the thread below, and NOT in the official poll above. Just list the three players of your choosing and award 5,3, or 1 point(s). You can give the ref a mark if you want too ! These votes will NOT be counted in the official total, as we only count votes from those who where actually at the game, but it IS a way for you to participate in the process .... which many people asked for .... a happy medium we hope !!!!!

nope thats a complete cop-out. The status of CJT or any other body is irrelevant. The club should be communicating through their website, twitter, facebook, instagram, email mailing lists or any other customer Db they have. If they choose to publicise information through CJT, CTO, traditional media ... or any other interested third parties or some combination thats fine too but it should not be their primary tool. When they seemingly go OTT on something that seems trivial on the face of it and then have complete radio silence on a matter that many fans and shareholders might find interesting or indicative of our future plans or direction then this just opens the whole floor up to the conspiracy theorists to wonder why it happened and why there was nothing said? Your explanation makes sense, so why not just say that ....
