The way they both played, using the word loosely, I thought they were both drinking before the game. Macgregor was culpable for two of the goals, rooted to his line, and Ferguson was..........well, was he playing? Scotland are a better team without Ferguson, grossly overrated, and always underperforms when playing for his country.

from BBC web site Saturday, 1 March, 2003 Inverness CT 3-1 St Mirren A sparkling hat-trick from Paul Ritchie earned Inverness Caley Thistle their first win in five games at home to St Mirren. St Mirren started brightly and opened the scoring after 13 minutes through Paul McHale's low drive. But the Jags hit back emphatically and, after 25 minutes, Ritchie equalised when he headed home Barry Robson's cross. Caley took the lead after four minutes of the second half, when Ritchie converted another pinpoint Robson delivery from close range. Ritchie completed his hat-trick six minutes later after good work from impressive Stuart Golabek. The Buddies mounted a late surge but could not dent a stout Inverness rearguard, the hosts hanging on for three points. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Inverness CT: Brown, Munro, McCaffray, Golabek, Tokely, McBain, Hart, Bagan, Robson, Wyness, Ritchie. Subs: Stewart, Keogh, Hislop, Low, Fraser. St Mirren: Robertson, Mitchell, Lowing, Dempsie, Denham, Broadfoot, Gillies, McHale, McLean, Roberts, McGinty. Subs: Cameron, Lappin, McGowan, Dunbar, Bald. Referee: D McDonald. Saturday, 10 January, 2004 Inverness CT 5-1 Brechin Paul Ritchie's hat-trick inspired Inverness Caledonian Thistle to a thumping Scottish Cup victory. Ritchie struck twice inside the first nine minutes and added a third in the closing stages. David Bingham and Roy McBain were also on target for the Highlanders, who now travel to meet St Mirren. Charlie King pulled a goal back for Brechin City early in the second half but the visitors had conceded three by that stage. Ritchie gave the hosts a fantastic start, slotting home from a tight angle in the eighth minute after Bingham had put him in the clear. Less than a minute later, Ritchie bagged his second, reacting quickly after McBain's shot had struck the upright. Bingham effectively killed the game off in the 23rd minute with a clinical finish but his side had to wait until the second half before they added to their tally. King pulled a goal back for Brechin when his deflected shot found the target six minutes after the restart but any hopes of a comeback were thwarted five minutes later when McBain raced clear to make it 4-1. Ritchie completed his hat-trick after 68 minutes, finishing from close range after fine work by Bingham on the left. Inverness CT: Brown, Tokely, Golabek, Mann, McCaffrey, Duncan, Mackie, McBain, Ritchie, Keogh, Bingham. Subs: Munro, Thomson, Macmillan, Macrae, Fraser. Brechin City: Hay, Millar, A Trialist, B Trialist, White, Smith, King, McLeish, Templeman, Gibson, Mitchell. Subs: McCulloch, Miller, Boylan. Referee: C Thomson Saturday, 2 March, 2002 Inverness CT 4-2 St Mirren E-mail your reaction to Football Talk A Paul Ritchie hat-trick helped Caley Thistle come from behind to claim a well-deserved victory at the Caledonian Stadium. Ricky Gillies put St Mirren ahead after just nine minutes from the penalty spot after Bobby Mann tripped Ian Ross. But Thistle responded well and equalised through David Bagan's spectacular, 25-yard drive after 38 minutes. Paul Ritchie put the Jags ahead when he got on to the end of a defence-splitting pass from Charlie Christie just after half-time. The same player struck again two minutes later to put the hosts firmly in charge. St Mirren hit back as Ross reduced the deficit when he connected with a cross from Jose Quitongo. But Ritchie put the result beyond a doubt when he completed his hat-trick from Barry Robson's pass with 10 minutes left. Saturday, 16 November, 2002 Inverness CT 5-3 Queen of the South Inverness Caledonian Thistle were made to fight very hard for their sixth successive league victory, against a Queen of the South side who played half the game with nine men. Paul Ritchie gave the home side a dream start when he opened the scoring from Dennis Wyness' through pass in the sixth minute, and it was against the run of play when Sean O'Connor equalised from a Robbie Neilson cross on 37 minutes. Barry Robson restored the Jags' lead with a penalty kick after Roy McBain was impeded by O'Connor on 43 minutes. Saints Peter Weatherson was ordered off just before the break, and they were reduced to nine men when Brian McColligan was red-carded for a second bookable offence on 48 minutes. Robson put the Highlanders 3-1 up with a 25-yard rocket, but O'Connor quickly reduced the deficit from a Derek Lyle pass. Ritchie netted for Thistle on the hour before John O'Neill converted a penalty kick for the Doonhamers. Ritchie made victory secure when he completed his hat-trick after good play from Robson set up the chance. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Inverness CT: Brown, Mann, Munro, Golabek, Tokely, Duncan, Hart, McBain, Robson, Ritchie, Wyness. again, from the BBC web site Saturday, 8 September, 2001, 16:09 GMT 17:09 UK Inverness CT 5-1 Arbroath Dennis Wyness grabbed a glorious hat-trick as Inverness Caledonian Thistle romped to victory over Arbroath. Wyness opened the scoring, Bobby Mann added the second and Roy McBain got on the scoresheet before the hat-trick man grabbed his second. Steve Mallen got one back for Arbroath before Wyness completed the scoring. It was the first win of the season for Steve Paterson's side. Arbroath have now not won in nine visits to Caledonian Stadium. Influential midfielder Charlie Christie had recovered from injury to start for Caley Thistle. Defence-splitting pass Wyness gave their side a dream start when he opened the scoring from Ross Tokely's through pass in the fifth minute. Mann stretched the lead with a bullet header from Barry Robson's corner on 14 minutes. Wyness was unmarked at the back post when he made it 3-0 from McBain's corner on the hour. McBain put the home side further ahead midway through the second half when he raced onto a defence-splitting pass from Russell Duncan. Mallan reduced the arrears from a David McInally corner two minutes from time. But Wyness completed the rout when he connected with Martin Bavidge's cross on the stroke of full time. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Inverness CT: Walker, McCaffray, Mann, McBain, Tokely, Duncan, Christie, Robson, Bavidge, Wyness, Ritchie. This was some game. from BBC web site. Saturday, 2 December, 2000, 18:52 GMT Inverness CT 7-3 Ayr United Dennis Wyness grabbed a glorious hat-trick as Caley Thistle blitzed the visitors in a magnificent victory. Thistle took the lead in the eighth minute when Mike Teasdale converted a low cross from Richard Hastings. But the visitors hit back, taking a surprise lead with strikes from Eddie Annand and a solo effort from Hugh Robertson in the space of two minutes. Paul Sheerin equalised from the penalty spot after Wyness was tripped by Steven Boyack and Wyness sent the home team into the lead just before the interval. Hat-trick Glynn Hurst put Ayr back on level terms with a low drive in 48 minutes, but from then on Thistle dominated proceedings. David Bagan put the home side 4-3 up on the hour and he extended the gap with a 20-yard rocket 15 minutes later. I thought this was the case, that Wyness and Ritchie scored hat-tricks in the same game. from the BBC web site:- Saturday, 19 October, 2002, Alloa 0-6 Inverness CT Hat-tricks from Dennis Wyness and Paul Ritchie destroyed Alloa as Inverness Caledonian Thistle won a very one-sided affair at Recreation Park. After six minutes, Wyness grabbed his first goal from close range, followed by a second from 18 yards, capitalising on a slip by goalkeeper James Evans. When Wyness slotted in his third goal after 21 minutes from just outside the area, Alloa knew they were in deep trouble. The pressure continued and with 27 minutes gone, Ritchie cracked in the fourth goal, high into the net from 22 yards. Caley continued strongly in the second half with Ritchie adding the fifth goal after 71 minutes before completing the rout with the sixth, and his third, with 11 minutes left. Alloa: James Evans, Valentine, Seaton, Watson, Thomson, Christie, MacDonald, Derek Ferguson, Hamilton, Hutchison, Stevenson. Subs: Knox, Walker, Gillan, Gareth Evans, Hogarth. Inverness CT: Brown, Tokely, Golabek, Mann, Munro, McBain, Duncan, Wyness, Ritchie, Hart, Robson. Subs: Christie, McCaffray, Low, Keogh, Ridgers. Referee: C Thompson and his four goal game DENNIS WYNESS saw Caley Thistle to a 5-2 First Division home win over Raith Rovers last night. The striker grabbed a first-half hat-trick, as well as a goal in the 71st minute. Thistle took the lead after six minutes when Raith keeper Simon Miotto panicked and handed Wyness a simple finish. Caley went 2-0 up when Wyness flicked the ball home and t h e striker completed his hat-trick with a volley. After the break, Scott Crabbe pulled one back for Raith but Wyness restored his side's advantage by grabbing his fourth.

Usage Note: The idiomatic phrase cannot but has sometimes been criticized as a double negative, perhaps because it has been confused with can but. The but of cannot but, however, means "except," as it does in phrases such as no one but, while the but of can but has the sense only, as it does in the sentence We had but a single bullet left. Both cannot but and can but are established as standard expressions. ? The construction cannot help is used with a present participle to roughly the same effect as cannot but in a sentence such as We cannot help admiring his courage. This construction usually implies that a person is unable to affect an outcome normally under his or her control. Thus, saying We could not help laughing at such a remark would imply that one could not suppress one's laughter. ? The construction cannot help but probably arose as a blend of cannot help and cannot but; it has the meaning of the first and the syntax of the second: We cannot help but admire his courage. The construction has sometimes been criticized as a redundancy, but it has been around for more than a century and appears in the writing of many distinguished authors. ? The expression cannot (or can't) seem to has occasionally been criticized as illogical, and so it is. Brian can't seem to get angry does not mean "Brian is incapable of appearing to get angry," as its syntax would seem to dictate; rather, it means "Brian appears to be unable to get angry." But the idiom serves a useful purpose, since the syntax of English does not allow a logical equivalent like Brian seems to cannot get angry; and the cannot seem to construction is so widely used that it would be pedantic to object to it.
