Aberdeen -V- Inverness CT - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Stroll along the A96

Off down the A96 this weekend for the next SPL fixture at Pittodrie against Scottish Cup semi-finalists Aberdeen. You may well pass some of our Highland Marchers out for a stroll along the road to Aberdeen, seemingly just getting some practice in for the end of season jaunt. Nutters everyone of them!

Craig Brown has slowly but surely managed to drag his underperforming side away from the relegation battle and into a cup semi-final against struggling Hibernian. Something for the Don's fans to look forward to at least on the 14th April. It's not from playing a Barcelona style of football though. It's more like watching Cliff Thorburn playing snooker, or Gary Anderson trying to hit doubles, or even paint drying. They have been grinding out draws as if they were going out of fashion. Six draws in their last eight SPL games has hardly set the tongues wagging, a solitary 1-0 victory over relegation bound Dunfermline the only three pointer in a series of tedious encounters. They did of course see off Queen of the South in the Scottish cup by a whopping 2-1 margin, and that was after a 1-1 draw in the first game at Pittodrie. They fared better in the quarters though, knocking out high flying Motherwell at the first attempt by 2-1, with the Well getting revenge in last weeks league match.

Of course, we have little to craw about either. Two wins, three draws and three defeats leaves us with egg on our collective faces over the last eight games. From beating Hearts in an entertaining game in Inverness, we have slumped badly, so much so that if the Pars were to go on a run, then we might find ourselves in a spot of bother; surely not. Only defeat at Celtic and the home draw with Killie saw any semblance of a football side. The Killie game saw us fashion out a plethora of chances, however our strikeforce seem to be on strike, or should that be off strike as they struggle to hit the target week in week out. The glimmer of hope though is that at least we looked interested, well most of them, and the opportunities came along fast and thick, if only if only.

We have a new recruit willing to part with his observations on the Inverness rollercoaster and ajsict92 will get off the mark with this preview. The report will come courtesy of some nutters that are willing to walk to Aberdeen for fun.......strewth.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Back to work
Terry Butcher takes us on the ever familiar journey along the A96 to pay Aberdeen a visit, the boys will surely be feeling refreshed having had a fortnight break since the 1-1 draw with Killie and hopefully the lay off will have given some of the lads who were struggling for fitness a chance to be within a shout for inclusion in the squad.
On paper Aberdeen's league form looks impressive as they are unbeaten in nine games until last weeks 1-0 defeat to Motherwell. That included snatching points off both the old firm during that run and pulling away from the threat of relegation that loomed over them for the first half of the season. However seven of the nine games have been draws, four of which have ended goalless so while the results have been coming in its safe to say that the entertainment factor has not been high on the lists of priorities. Anyone who subjected themselves to the 0-0 draw against St Johnstone on SKY SPORTS can be testament to that. Like ICT, Aberdeen also had a fairly busy month in the January transfer window with one or two eye catching additions to the playing squad. Mark Reynolds, a player Terry Butcher had his eye on in the window arrived on loan from Sheffield Wednesday and has added some much needed stability to the backline and also the acquisition of former Scotland international Gavin Rae from Dundee has added an experienced head to the midfield.
ICT seem to have been trying the winning ugly approach like Aberdeen, but it hasn't quite paid dividends as we are searching for our first win since January when we managed to overturn an unbeaten Hearts side 1-0 at home. We've only managed 4 goals in our last 8 games and probably for the first time this season we have been getting beaten in games and deserving it as opposed to just being unlucky. However, anyone who saw the Kilmarnock game two weeks ago will have seen a much improved performance in terms of desire and quality of play, but our infamous poor coversion rate has been a far too familiar tune this season and one thats become incredibly tedious in hearing. However new games bring about new possibilties and hopefully the boys will be itching to get out and impress, having been a fair amount of time since they last played. Top-Six is beyond us now so perhaps playing for their employment could be used as a motivator between now and the end of the season with several of the lads facing uncertain futures at Inverness.
The previous two encounters between the teams this season have seen both sides pick up 2-1 wins against each other. Aberdeen's first win of the season came against us back in August with Vernon and Milsom grabbing first half goals, however ICT battled back with Richie Foran reducing the deficit, (his only goal all season astonishingly), in a game that saw ICT dominate large chunks but fail to capitalise on what we created. We came off the right side of a 2-1 win against the Dons however on Christmas Eve in a game which saw two corners and two goals in the second half from Golobart and Tade with Rory Fallon coming of the bench to leave the remainder of the game rather tense for those in the stands.
ajsict92's prediction:- Like many of our previous encounters with the Dons I think this one will be tight. Aberdeen will be looking to get back to winning ways following their defeat last week and will also be looking to finish as high up the table as possible. We ourselves, will be looking to pick up our first win in 2 months and build on what was a much improved performance at home to Kilmarnock 2 weeks ago. Some of the players will be looking to impress as contract talks begin so while it may not appear there is much left to play for this season, a more in depth look shows that there actually is. For me I can't really see beyond a 1-1 draw for this one. Neither side have exactly set the heather on fire with their style of play from recent games and from our point of view we still have quite alot of our creative influence missing through injury. As long as Hibs and Dunfermline aren't winning any points we pick up are a bonus.
***Latest Team News***
Inverness are still without long term injury victims Chris Hogg and Andy Shinnie. Jonny Hayes and Kenny Gillet have returned to training but the Aberdeen game is probably too soon for them to be considered. Owain Tudur-Jones will be looking to step up his rehab after a string of late cameos for the Highlanders to build up his match sharpness and will be desperate to make a start. Aaron Doran will have benefited from the extra week off and is making progress, but again this match may come too soon for him as well. Sam Winnall showed up well against Killie and he will be looking for a piece of the action this weekend, where goals will probably be at a premium. And it's a happy birthday to Roman Golobart this week as he stepped out of the teens and into the twenty's. The big centre back scored at both ends last time out and his debut at Pittodrie was spoiled by a lapse of concentration allowing the Don's to score, but the big fellow has come on leaps and bounds since then and oozes class.
Aberdeen have youngster Fraser Fyvie out after suffering ankle ligament damage against Motherwell in the cup, although he hopes to be back for the semi-final against Hibernian. Russell Anderson also targets the cup semi as a possible comeback game for him. Stephen Hughes, Isaac Osbourne, Rob Milsom and Yoann Folly are all unavailable through injury, but the Dons have no other fresh worries for the game.
And finally, well done to Kilmarnock FC for taking Celtic down a peg or two. With Rangers being hounded by the tax man and everyone else and their dog, Celtic had expected to just turn up and receive their League Cup trophy last weekend at Hampden. Fortunately, Kilmarnock never read the script and put up stubborn resistance before Dieter Van Tornhout scored a brilliant team effort of a goal to silence the ever arrogant Celtic glory hunters. Neil Lennon's countenance was a picture. I can still see his greetin fizzog claiming for a penalty he never got .............. nothing changes there, such a shame, NOT.
The victory was tinged with sadness though as Kilmarnock midfielder Liam Kelly's father suffered a heart attack and tragically died shortly after the final whistle somewhat dampening the celebrations normally associated with with winning a national trophy.
Nearly forgot:- (how could I) Our neighbours over the bridge have all but secured their place in the SPL with both Falkirk and Dundee losing in midweek. The dream of playing with the big boys will soon become reality and they should be congratulated on their achievement, and a huge pat on the back for our ex-captain and ICT legend Grant Munro for guiding them in the right direction. It just goes to show that you can't keep a good man down.
CTO Player of the Month - February
Teaser Paragraph:
<style type="text/css"> <!-- .style21 {color: #FFFFFF} --> </style> <p>February was a month without a win for Caley Thistle, but there's at least a crumb of comfort for Kenny Gillet - the French defender won his second consecutive Player of The Month award.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The results might not have been great, but Gillet started February as he had left off at the end of the previous month, with displays that saw him voted as the team's best player in both the cup and league defeats by Celtic. Inverness CT -V- Kilmarnock - Report
Own Golobart makes a point
Roman Golobart scored a fabulous goal full of Spanish flair to lift the doom and gloom at the Caledonian Stadium and earn a point for Kilmarnock. Unfortunately the fabulous goal was at the wrong end as he chipped a ball high into Esson's goal just like Messi. He also earned a point for Inverness after bundling home a ball on the goal line to deservedly give Inverness a share of the points, no more than they deserved.
A rare sighting at Inverness yesterday, Sam Winnall made a start to help out Billy McKay in attack with Hayes out with a hamstring injury, and the injured Kenny Gillet being replaced by Graeme Shinnie at left back.
Kenny Shiels rested some players with the League Cup final looming next weekend and started with Heffernan and Fowler on the bench.
It was a lively start to the game for the new front pairing as they darted around in sprightly fashion and McKay offloaded a shot inside two minutes, but like most of todays twenty odd attempts it was off target. Winnall made Bell earn his crust as he scampered into the box and fired one goalwards after McKay was upended, this time on target but Bell saved well diverting the ball for a corner.
What were Killie doing while we were trying to attack their goal; well nothing really. We were dominating the game while managing to look toothless up front, but the effort was there, well it was until Gnakpa came on later in the game. Tansey forced Bell into another top drawer save as he managed to get one low enough to make the keeper work. That was a bit of a rarity as well, a Tansey shot on target, but normal service would be resumed as Tade fired one high over when well placed. Killie did manage a corner as they ventured forth but no damage to the home rearguard as Esson cleared the danger with a couple of swift left hooks.
Then, with half an hour gone, we conceded an own Golobart. Classy young Spaniard Roman Golobart in attempting to clear a Harkins centre lifted the ball into the roof of Esson's net in spectacular fashion from ten yards. He appeared to be caught in three minds, neither heading clear, hoofing over the bar or knocking back to Esson, he simply did the difficult thing and put the ball where Esson could not reach it, right in the top corner. Stunning! Messi eat yer heart out.
This was against the run of play, where have I heard this before. Tade managed one on target before Tansey shot over, high and wide. I see a pattern forming here, a sort of one on, one off..... The hard working Richie Foran blocked a Silva effort as the game flow levelled out and before the break Golobart tried to make amends but his shot was mistimed and Bell collected comfortably.
Half Time 0-1 (ouch)
Second half started like the first, early effort from Sutherland this time going well over. Tansey narrowly missed the target as he dragged a low shot just wide of Bell's right hand post from the edge of the box. Golobart and Bell clashed going for a fifty fifty ball and Bell took some time out for a knock with the referee mysteriously awarding a free kick for the sliding challenge. Tade put one on, one off as we forced the pace of the game but the breakthrough looked like being always out of reach.
Killie were being pushed onto the back foot and little was seen of their attacking intent. Winnall was next to miss the eight yard wide target and that was about it on his first start which had begun promisingly. A baffling substitution then raised a few hackles when Gnakpa replaced the industrious Tade, or should that be industrial. Not a popular decision as would become evident by Gnakpa's lack of interest in the proceedings, and Ross replaced the unfortunate Sam, this change proved more worthwhile as Ross was able to hold the ball and find players with his tight passing.
Tom, Dick and Harry were having a go now, as Meekings and Sutherland shot high and wide again. It looked as though it was not going to be our day as Foran did well to burst into the box, unfortunately his clipped shot was blocked brilliantly by Bell and Foran knew he should have done better.
With time running out and luck on the visitors side, up popped Roman at the right end to knock home the equaliser after McKay had knocked the ball goalwards. Olé. The move had began with some good Inverness pressure and when the ball came back to Sutherland on the right wing he whipped an excellent ball into the box and Richie Foran acrobatically volleyed the ball goalwards, Cammy Bell made a tremendous reflex save before McKay nodded it into the feet of the Spaniard. Relief all round and still time for a winner. However, instead of settling us down, we started to get jittery and Kilmarnock suddenly woke up. They produced a series of corners in a frenetic finish to the game but in fairness, we held firm and Esson eventually had some work to do as he saved from Nelson. It was squeaky bum time now, but the ball was kept out and the game slipped into full time.
Full Time 1-1
Strange game to assess as every fan at the game saw a different picture. It was entertaining enough without setting the heather on fire and but for squandering numerous chances that came our way we should have won in style. But that's not the Inverness way just now and a point each it was.
Despite scoring an own goal, Roman Golobart was my MotM and showed great confidence to come back from his first goal to eventually force home the equaliser. Richie Foran ran himself to a standstill, unable to run near the end and Shinnie, Meekings and McKay tried their best. The one downside today was our inability to hit a target than stands eight yards wide and eight feet tall in old money. What do we practice? Cammy Bell was probably deserving of the games MotM as he made a few excellent stops to keep the score down.
One further pat on the back goes to the nurse who entertained the North Stand. I think I'm in love, Mwah.
Inverness CT -V- Kilmarnock - Preview
Teaser Paragraph:
Oh no, another game this weekend, can I go shopping please.
Having watched the demise of our club over the last few weeks it is painstakingly obvious that many of the squad that are playing this season will not be plying their trade at Inverness next year. With the players rotating quicker than a windmill on top of Craggie Brae it's little surprise than the continuity of the team has been severely disrupted this campaign, mostly due to serious injuries to key players.
But wait, maybe there is hope. On Saturday we entertain Kilmarnock, one of only two sides we have beaten twice this season, and this weekend we are going for the full house against them. In fact we hammered them at Kilmarnock with much the same bunch of players thrown into combat and given little chance of pulling it off.
So what has gone wrong?
Our confidence appears to be shattered and our defence is leaking like a sieve. The management seem to have tried every possible permutation in their quest to gain points but still we struggle to get results. Is it the players or have Terry and Mo ran out of ideas? Every week we have a different back line on the park whether that's through injury, red cards or Butcher calling the shots, and every week we see the lack of understanding costing us goals and points. At the moment, we are not a team, unlike our neighbours across the bridge who are oozing confidence, a confidence gained by playing a settled side and that in itself is like having an extra couple of players on the park. Let's hope we can turn it round before the end of the season or it will be squeaky bum time after the split if Dunfermline win a couple of games and we continue to choke.
Killie have been more than generous to us over the last few seasons. We can normally rely on them for a few goals and a few points for they are a Jekyll & Hyde team similar to us. They have only two wins in their last dozen SPL games, including being hammered 3-0 by Dunfermline and 3-1 by Hibs, both these defeats coming at Rugby Park. Killies last win was four games ago, beating impoverished Rangers 1-0 at Ibrox.
Inverness have four wins out of the last twelve SPL matches, but it is six games since we beat Hearts 1-0 on the 21st of January, seven if you include the cup defeat at the hands of Celtic. In head to heads at Inverness we lead five games to four in the SPL with only two draws. These games have produced 43 goals, thats almost four goals per game, and with defences like these two then it's not difficult to see why.
Remember remember the 5th of November, gunpowder, treason and the hammering of Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.
I know I know, it doesn't rhyme, but it sounds great. So, let's go back to Guy Fawkes day at Kilmarnock. We had our finest display of attacking football in our SPL years, yet we still managed to concede three goals. Andrew Shinnie scored a hat-trick that day and Gregory Tade looked as though he would fill Adam Rooney's boots with a powerful display of aggressive pacey and skillful striking. At the moment, he looks like he would struggle to lace his boots and the unfortunate Andrew Shinnie is sidelined with a broken foot. Jonny Hayes also chipped in with a sparkling strike and even he has struggled to make an impact recently. All this after going one goal down early in the game. When that happens now we look like a beaten side, and the confidence visibly ebbs from the team, we put ourselves under pressure and the expected happens. It's as though we enter the arena a beaten side, waiting for defeat. Where has the fight gone, where has the passion for the battle gone and where has our mojo gone? I hope we can get it back soon and this is hopefully the right game at the right time for us, as Kilmarnock are not exactly setting the heather on fire either. We are without the talented Andrew Shinnie and the energetic David Davis from the team that ran riot at Rugby Park, it's up to the rest to step up to the plate.
There has been a lot of Inverness bashing going on in the last few weeks, myself included, and it is getting more difficult to syphon out the positives from some woeful displays. However, with Dunfermline doing there best to keep us in the SPL then maybe we can get the opportunity to regroup in the summer, recharge the batteries and come back bigger and better for next season where it looks most likely that we will be joined by the market town team from Dingwall for the first all Highland SPL derby. Now that should be enough to put some bite back into our performances, something sadly lacking for most of this season. Maybe we have become too comfortable with the Pars seemingly heading for self destruction, Rangers hogging the limelight with their mismanagement and top-six out of reach, (damn, I wasn't going to mention top-six ever again, damn, I did it again).
***Latest Team News***
Inverness crocks have been like the cast list for casualty this season, but it has been lessening. Chris Hogg, Andy Shinnie and Aaron Doran are still out but Roman Golobart found himself back on the park last Monday against United and apart from some ring rustiness, looked classy and should retain his starting berth. Owain Tudur-Jones is gaining more match time every week and maybe he will start. Jonny Hayes looks likely to miss out with the hamstring injury that kept him out at Tannadice. Other than that, there are no fresh injuries to report so far, although rumours that Kenny Gillet may be struggling for fitness. Keeper Ryan Esson is one man who can hold his head high this season and the stopper will be out to convince Terry Butcher that he deserves another season at Inverness beyond this summer.
Kilmarnock have red carded Dean Shiels suspended to add to the injury list which has Manuel Pascali out for the season with a broken leg and Ryan O'Leary on long term leave with his cruciate injury. Mathew Kennedy has a knock and looks set to miss out. Belgian Dieter van Tornhout is also a doubt with a hamstring injury. Paul Heffernan and Lewis Toshney are both expected to be in the squad for the trip to Inverness. Kenny Shiels will decide on the morning of the game if it will be wiser to rest some players in view of the cup final coming up next week.
tm4tj Prediction:- Despite the castigation, I do believe we are more than capable of beating Kilmarnock and more importantly restoring some sense of pride in our play. We have been as weak in attack as we have in defence, and the midfield dynamics seem to have deserted us, but the players should be good enough to turn this around and complete a hat-trick of wins over what has been a poor Killie side of late. The Ayrshire outfit may just have one eye on next weekends league cup final against Celtic, and that may take their eye off the ball on Saturday, (see what I did there). Narrow home win for me, 2-1 in a repeat of the first game of the season and three welcome points please.
On a side note, didn't Barcelona look like Inverness Caledonian Thistle the other night. Well, they both play in red and blue stripes sometimes, unfortunately there endeth the similarities. Aye, the Messi show was simply fantastic.
Promotion Watch:- Ross County have virtually assured themselves of SPL football next seaon with another win to take their unbeaten run to a confidence boosting 23rd SFL game undefeated. Their last reverse was a 5-1 hammering at the hands of Hamilton Accies way back on the 13th of August. That is certainly the form of Champions and with Dundee and Falkirk unable to make any headway into the champions elect lead, then I doubt you will get big odds from the bookies for County to be crowned First Division Champions at this stage of the season.
Dundee Utd -V- Inverness CT - Report
United canter home against cart horses
Dundee United once more emphasised the gulf in class between these two sides as they strolled to victory against a clueless and punchless Inverness Caledonian Thistle. There appeared to be little between the sides in the opening exchanges, but that all turned when a looping John Rankin effort found the top corner and Inverness reverted to type after that. Scott Robertson shouldered home a second before tormentor in chief Johnny Russell scored a sublime third to end the contest with twelve minutes remaining.
Another defeat for Inverness and Terry Butcher must be wondering if he has anything left in the tank to offer his struggling outfit. I doubt many of the Inverness supporters expected much from this match, but it's still disappointing to be proved right and the alarming rate that we are shipping goals must be of some concern to the Caley Jags management. Of equal concern is our inability to fashion any clear scoring opportunities and we looked as though we could have played for a fortnight without seriously troubling Pernis in the United goal. We must be a joy for any opposition defence to play against given our lack of aggression in front of goal.
Terry Butcher thrust a hastily repaired Roman Golobart back into central defence and his partner tonight was none other than Ross Tokely with Proctor and Williams on the bench alongside Graeme Shinnie. Jonny Hayes was nowhere to be seen and Shane Sutherland started, with McKay the lone striker and Gnakpa and Winnall on the bench with Tudur-Jones. Hayes apparently tweaked a hamstring last week but should not be out for long..........hopefully.
United were a more settled side with goal threats all over the park and twin tormentors Jonny Russell and Gary Mackay-Steven leading the charge with big Jon Daly. They had a defence but they could have enjoyed this game from the stand as a powderpuff Inverness attack failed to carve out any serious goal threats although the stats will show a number of attempts on target, but none troubling Dusan Pernis in goal.
I can't stomach much more of this drivel tonight and Ginger Jaggy can continue the report when he settles down..............
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Two weeks and two tales of woe in which Caley Thistle’s upward momentum has well and truly been clipped as we suddenly look over our shoulder. A win over Kilmarnock on Saturday in our game in hand will almost guarantee safety but our performance levels have nose-dived since the back end of January and Monday night saw this continue to deteriorate against a classy Dundee United side.
We have to be thankful that Dunfermline have been poor all season otherwise we may not be looking backwards with any comfort. The game was a resounding victory for the Arabs and it could have been more had it not been for some decent stops by Ryan Esson. We do have good players and we are missing some key players but we are still lacking an out and out striker – some have queried why we haven’t tried Sam Winnall?
Caley Thistle went into this game without Jonny Hayes who may have been off the pace in our last couple of games but we certainly missed him in this one. We lacked drive and quality with very little creativity. Terry Butcher would have been pleased by the opening of the game with Dundee United finding it hard to get the ball down and dictate the play with their excellent passing game.
Unfortunately all that work was undone after a quarter of an hour from a comedy of errors at the back. First Kenny Gillet played a needless pass back to Esson who in turn made a poor clearance which fell to Richie Foran in midfield. His poor control allowed Ex Caley Thistle midfielder John Rankin to nip the ball away and hit a trademark long range strike which nestled into the top corner of Essons net. Great strike but shoddy play from the visitors.
Inverness did create chances with Shane Sutherland blasting over from a good position in the penalty box. Then came our best chance when Billy McKay showed some tenacity in the box to win the ball and put a shot in that was well blocked by Dusan Pernis. The game continued to be hard fought but without Hayes, a lack of an outlet was very observant for every Inverness fan. Instead it was long balls with McKay and Tade barely winning any balls against Gavin Gunning and Sean Dillon.
It was almost 2-0 before half time when danger man Johnny Russell was able to use his pace to get into the box and was only denied by an excellent full length save by Esson. Overall Inverness had held Dundee United well and had it not been for a lack of concentration on three fronts then it may well have been level at half time. But the downside was that we looked as dangerous as a mouse.
Half-Time 1-0
The second half started as the first had finished with United in the ascendancy. This tale does have a common theme. The theme was poor defending and this again reared its head just five minutes into the second half. A free kick from Willo Flood was won by Jon Daly who had climbed above Ross Tokely, and his knock back found it's way to Scott Robertson who unmarked headed the ball into the bottom of the net. It was such a sloppy goal to concede with Daly dominating the penalty area and Robertson finding the freedom of Dundee to nod home untidily.
Bizarrely going further behind stung us into some action. Claude Gnakpa came on for Nick Ross and his introduction definitely improved Inverness. Ross moments before going off was inches from an equaliser from a Sutherland Free Kick. The ball was definitely an improvement from the first half. It could have got worse when Esson dropped an easy catch, the goalkeeper watched on in relief when an off balance Daly stabbed the ball over. After that it was all Inverness for a 10-15 minute spell where some great chances had been made. Sutherland shot wide while Greg Tansey hit two decent shots that were comfortable for the Polish goalkeeper. But the golden chances fell first to Roman Golabart who headed wide when McKay was in a better position just behind him. Two minutes later McKay should have done better when he got himself into the box and hit a shot that looped over the bar at the near post. A better finish was needed and it summed up our night and season as a whole. Claude Gnakpa did bring out a save from Pernis but Caley Thistle could have played all night and not have scored.
There was still time for Russell to score the goal of the game even if the challenges were a little half hearted. The pacey front man received the ball from a Daly centre and he used great agility to get away from three or four defenders to finish coolly past Esson.
After that the game petered out with United sitting comfortably 3-0 ahead.
Full Time 3-0
That was the way the game finished and it highlighted a major gulf in class. The game was fairly even for the whole of the first half but the quality of delivery into the box was light-years between the teams. When Inverness did play along the deck and improved the crossing it was no surprise that we dominated for 10-15 minutes creating some real good chances, but our attempts at finishing were timid. We were already 2-0 down by then and on final reflections it was a majorly disappointing performance, not taking anything away from in form Dundee United.

Dundee United -V- Inverness CT - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
On form Arabs host Inverness Nomads

Our wandering squad visit Tannadice on Monday night (19:45) to take on a revitalised Dundee United in front of the TV cameras. United are on a fine run at the moment, winning four and drawing two of their last six games, scoring 14 goals in the process and conceding only 2. We, on the other hand, have one win, two draws and three defeats and have shipped 8 goals and scored a paltry 3, that's only half a goal a game!

Our hopes were raised a little before last weeks game that the demise of Glasgow Rangers may have been seen as a bonus for Inverness, unfortunately they were swiftly dashed as Rangers overran us with a clinical display in front of goals and put us firmly in our place.

We have to get that game out of our system quickly though and move on as we enter the last half dozen games before the split, which we can still achieve, but personally, I believe we would be better off ensuring that we keep at least one team below us until the end of the season, then we can write this one off and build for next year.

Injuries, and suspensions have disrupted the continuity of the side this season and it is one we will be glad to see the back of.

Ginger Jaggy is chomping at the bit to tell us how this game is going to unfold...............

The season now moves into March and the start of the run in to the Split. After last week’s demolition at the hands of a financially stricken Rangers we travel to Dundee on a Monday night to play United at Tannadice. This is a huge game for any slim top six hopes that lingers for this season. But 3 points in this match will be no walk in the park as Dundee United are the form team in the league at the moment. With two games in hand following the weekend fixtures the top six still remains a distinct possibility, but we must now show the form that we produced after Christmas to ease us away from the bottom and back into the congested mid table pack.

Just a little bit on the timing of this game. Every little penny is always welcome to our club but this game is another instance of the Television companies dictating the game as a whole. There will not likely to be a huge traveling contingent because of the timing and day of this match and just a little note that some may have made plans for the original date which was due to be a Sunday at Midday. This date was a little better but not a huge amount and I feel sorry for people who support any club that gets affected by the TV moguls who show no consideration towards the fans of the game; and they wonder why the turnstiles are clicking less.

Rant over, now a little bit on our opponents Dundee United for this rescheduled evening match.

Dundee United are the form side at the moment and they are an exciting team of pace and skill that give the Old Firm a tough time. In fact United knocked Rangers out of the cup with one of the most comfortable wins seen at Ibrox against the Blue half in a long time. The Arabs looked to have been crippled by the departure of David Goodwillie to Blackburn in the summer in what was a brilliant piece of business. An inconsistent start to the season saw calls for Peter Houston to be relieved of his duties but since then they have been electric and have moved themselves into contention for a Europa League spot. They are currently sitting fifth in the table and lie only 2 points behind St Johnstone in fourth. The Arabs are unbeaten in their last five SPL matches with two draws against St Mirren and Motherwell blighting the perfect record. But the wins that they have accumulated have been very impressive with big victories over in form St Johnstone and Kilmarnock as well as beating Hearts at Tynecastle. One of the reasons for this is the pace and creativity of their two best attacking options. Gary MacKay-Steven and Johnny Russell have been teasing defences all season and they will be a threat again on Monday night. Johnny Russell has scored 11 goals this season with two of them coming in their 3-2 comeback in Inverness back in December. Gary MacKay-Steven is Highland born from Thurso and has played over the bridge before getting a lucrative move to Liverpool. But he has been injury prone and he returned to Scotland where he almost joined us last season (Hayes and MacKay-Steven either side now that is an awesome thought) but yet again the injury curse struck and he went to the lower leagues before United snapped him up. He has chipped in with 4 goals but his assists has been his forte and he if he stays fit could be a really exciting prospect for the future.

The head to head this season has been all United with 2 wins and six goals scored. The 3-1 defeat at Tannadice showed our Jekyll and Hyde form with a decent performance in the first half turning into a shambles in the second. We lost that game 3-1 when we didn’t deserve to be behind at half time, to deservedly losing the game effortlesslly. The second game we should have won when we were 2-0 ahead just after half time but it swung when United pulled a quick goal back and the panic button was pressed. We went on to lose a game we were strolling through. Overall the Arabs seem to enjoy playing us with 10 wins to our 5 from 23 games played between the two clubs. They have not lost to us in 4 matches with our last win coming at Tannadice at the start of last season when we went goal crazy and won 4-0 on the second weekend of the season.

This game is now a must win if top six is to become reality against a rival with the same aim. David Proctor has said in the Press and Journal that we need to win all our remaining games to get there, and he isn’t wrong. It is a long shot but with all our games against teams in the same mid table scrap for top six then we have to get behind the team and believe we can do it. We have a game in hand which will bring us into play but only if we win this one. Results were kind again on Saturday so it is time to grab this position by the scruff of its neck and make a charge.

***LATEST TEAM NEWS***

Inverness' young Spanish defender Roman Golobart has made fantastic progress from his ankle injury and has declared himself fit, although boss Butcher will resist the temptation to bolster his flagging defence for at least another week to enable the talented centre back to regain match sharpness. Chris Hogg has also pleased his surgeon but will not feature this season and Andy Shinnie has had his protective boot removed and is also healing nicely. Aaron Doran was reported to be close to a return, but a tear in his hamstring has set him back another month. No fresh injury worries after the Rangers game, apart from confidence injuries.
Inverness (from): Provisional squad: Esson, Piermayr, Tokely, Gillet, Proctor, Meekings, Hayes,Tansey, Foran, G Shinnie, Ross, Morrison, Sutherland, Winnall, Gnakpa, McKay,Tudur Jones, Tuffey, Williams, Tade.

United are still without Felipe Mentel and Scott Severin, but Paul Dixon returns after serving a ban, and Danny Swanson could force himself into contention having added another weeks training to his comeback.
Dundee United (from): Pernis, Dillon, Gunning, Neilson, Kenneth, Watson, Dixon, Douglas, Swanson, Armstrong, S Robertson, Ryan, Flood, Mackay-Steven, Rankin, Russell, Lacny, Daly, Dow, Banks.

Saturday's results have left the door ajar for the elite six, and Dunfermline remain eight points adrift of us at the bottom thanks to a 2-0 home defeat to Motherwell. Hibs move one point closer after their draw with St Mirren and Aberdeen forced a draw with Celtic at Pittodrie. Killie and St Johnstone both ended the game with ten men and a point apiece and troubled Rangers lost another home game to Hearts as former Inverness hard man Ian Black scored in a 1-2 reverse at Ibrox.

ICT -V- Rangers : Report

Inverness fans due a refund as team fails to turn up

Inverness played like a Highland league side; that's maybe doing the Highland league teams a dis-service, as they constantly lofted aimless balls forward, mis-controlled in defence and in front of goals, wasted throw-ins and free kicks and were, well, just generally inept.
The Ibrox tax dodgers put aside their off field shenanigans to overwhelm a clumsy and hapless Inverness X1, who looked as though they were on a Sunday afternoon kick about in the sun. Oh wait, they were, unfortunately Rangers meant business and from the start they controlled the pace of the game and will not have an easier afternoons wages in a long time, assuming they will get paid.
Rangers responded magnificently to adversity and sprinted out of the blocks scoring three first half goals before Steve Williams notched the consolation before the break. Davis, Aluko and Little were the first half scorers and Lee McCulloch completed the rout in the second half, and almost added a fifth.
Ross Tokely found himself on the bench once more with Gillet partnering Williams and Shinnie at left back. Tade and McKay were on from the start. Ally McCoist put Perry, Little and Kerkar on the park with David Healy dropping to the bench, and it was the Rangers manager who's alteration made the most impact as Inverness struggled to cope with the pace and accuracy of the Gers strikers.
A shell shocked Ginger Jaggy will take up the story when he calms down...............
Well, the future may hang in the balance for Rangers but they showed a togetherness and performance to suggest that no one at Ibrox is lying down and ready to take the impending doom hanging over the club. In contrast, every Caley Thistle fan who was present and watching on Sky will know that for all the good possession Rangers held Caley Thistle gave them the freedom of Inverness.
Terry Butcher was furious after the game and so he should be. This is the second Old Firm match where Caley Thistle have been bullied and made to look like Sunday league players. The days when Caley thistle really gave the Old Firm a match in the Highland Capital has disappeared for the time being. The idea of top six footballs still remains a possibility, but it is growing shorter by the week as Dundee United look to pull away from the rest of the pack.
Rangers played their first away game from Ibrox since being moved in to administration and after losing to Kilmarnock hopes were raised that Caley Thistle could inflict more pain in front of the Sky Cameras. But for that to happen we had to perform at our best, this, on paper, was as weak a Rangers side that has travelled up the A9 but anyone expecting an easy victory would be optimistic at best. This Rangers team still have quality players which could still have competed for the league if they hadn’t had a ten point deduction.
The opening to the game was encouraging for the home side as they pressed from the off against their battered and bruised opponents. But with their first attack the champions (for not much longer) took the lead through their best player Steve Davis who ran the show all game. On six minutes the impressive Salim Kerkar was played through on the Caley Thistle right and his simple ball into the centre was tapped home by the industrious Northern Irishman. From that point Rangers looked like they could score every time they attacked. It was not really due to Rangers attacking but more down to our defence looking as shaky as a house built on sand.
Sone Aluko missed a sitter from close range as he failed to put his back post header on target from only five yards out from a brilliant Davis cross. But the ex-Aberdeen wide man was not to be denied only a few minutes later when an Andy Little cross was poorly cleared by Kenny Gillet and Aluko from 18 yards drilled the ball low into the corner of the net.
Caley Thistle did show glimpses of getting back into the game with Greg Tansey making Allan McGregor parry a powerful drive before Billy McKay troubled the Rangers defence with a decent run and cross with no one to profit in the middle.
The game was then ended as a contest when Kerkar again played a terrific ball in behind Meekings and Little finished superbly over Esson to complete Rangers dominance. But that wasn’t the end of the scoring in this half as Steve Williams powered a header into the Rangers net from a Tansey corner to keep the game breathing but only just.
Half Time 1-3
The second half did not yield as much action as the first which on a positive note meant that Caley Thistle was not really humiliated as badly as they could have been. Inverness brought on Proctor to replace the bedraggled Meekings. The second half started encouragingly when Jonny Hayes delivered a tempting ball into the box which Gregory Tade put wide at the front post but via a deflection. Had that gone in then at 3-2 the game may have been different but yet again our defence proved that we were never going to win this game. They were bullied at a corner and a header from Maurice Edu was cleared off the line by Nick Ross before Davis struck a low shot which Esson did well to put past the post with his foot. The ball travelled through a ruck of bodies and Esson showed lightning reactions to turn it round the post with his foot.
We had escaped but with little happening at the other end it was likely that Rangers would increase their lead. They did on 72 minutes when Caley Thistle again gave the ball away cheaply and it ended up in the back of the net. Little again drove at the defence and played a lovely ball to Kerkar whose weakfish effort was parried by Esson and the rebound was slammed home by Lee McCulloch.
Gregory Tade spurned another opportunity from a tempting Hayes cross but it would not have counted as he was flagged for offside, and Rangers almost made it five late on when McCulloch saw his fantastic volley crash off the bar and away. But Television Replays do appear to show that the ball did cross the line.
The game ended without any more meaningful action. What was shown was that Rangers can’t be treated lightly as they played very well for the circumstances they are in. In fact it is perceivable that quite a few members of the squad that did play or at least made the journey north will never play with each other again. Caley Thistle made Rangers look like world beaters with a performance which was inept at best.
Full Time 1-4
Terry Butcher has a lot of work to do if we are to make top six now starting with Dundee United next week. The odds are against us but we must not forget that we were the form team through January and the only team’s that had beaten us were the Old Firm. So let’s write this match off and start afresh for next week because surely we can not be as generous as we were on Sunday.
