Motherwell -V- Inverness CT - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Sunday School

Inverness head down to Europa casualties Motherwell on Sunday for the fifth round of SPL games hoping to teach them a lesson after putting Arbroath to the sword in midweek.

Three points and five places separate the teams after the first four games with Inverness taking up a familiar position in the lower half of the league, but it's early days yet.

Motherwell have yet to win at home this season and Inverness have still to record their first three points of the campaign, although a very pleasing 2-0 victory over second division Arbroath in midweek heartened the spirits after the shambles of the Celtic defeat. Motherwell bowed out of the Europa league going down 3-0 on aggregate to Spanish side Levante in Valencia.

The transfer window has been closing and Inverness have brought in two players with Arsenal connections. Not the muti-million pound stories you see on Sky Sports, but with little funding in the pot then we need to scour the fringe player market and see what is available. Hot prospect Phillip Roberts has arrived on loan until the January window. He was top scorer for the Arsenal u18 team last season and often plays as a lone striker which would suit our style of play. Another signing is the aristocratically named George Brislan-Hall who has joined on a six month deal. He has been released from his Arsenal contract after a couple of injuries curtailed his appearances in their academy set-up and the defender will try his luck up North. Good luck to both these young lads.

One to remember:- Barry Wilson's 70 yard dipper, (it gets longer every year), in the Scottish cup as Inverness Caledonian Thistle took another scalp in the national competition, when as a first division side we knocked The Steelmen out of the cup on the 6th March 2004. 7930 fans witnessed that one, Gordon Marshall never, as the ball flashed past him into the roof of the net. That victory sent us onwards to the semi-final where we eventually lost out to Dunfermline after a replay.........meh. Teams on that day were.................

INVERNESS CT: Brown, Tokely, Mann, McCaffrey, Golabek, McBain, Duncan, Thomson, Wilson, Ritchie, Keogh.
Subs- Munro (for Thomson), Proctor (for Ritchie), Fraser, Hart, McMillan.
MOTHERWELL: Marshall, Quinn, Corrigan, Craigan, Hammell, Lasley, Adams, Fagan, Burns, McDonald, Clarkson.
Subs- O'Donnell (for Fagan), Wright (for Clarkson), Corr, K.McDonald, Kinniburgh.

Treatment Table
Nick Ross looks as though he will be out until the New Year with a shoulder dislocation sustained in the Celtic game, which may require an operation. Chris Hogg is not fully fit yet and Jason Oswell is still recovering from his achilles injury. Youngster Mathew Cooper is making progress after his ankle injury.

Gringo enjoyed doing the Arbroath preview that much he is offering his services for the Motherwell preview as well, and here are his thoughts ahead of Sunday's 15:00 kick off.

Can we steel this?

This weekend we head for the former steel town of Motherwell to disturb their Sunday afternoons peace and quiet in the support of our team in what could be a highly entertaining SPL encounter. The fixture was rearranged to be played on the Sunday because of Motherwell's all-to-brief delve into European competition. We will suffer many fixture changes this season but at least this one is for the 'right' reason. Unfortunately for Motherwell things didn't work out in their favour against the Spanish side and they will not progress into the next round. In Stuart McCall they have, in my opinion, one of the best managers in Scotland at the moment and they will be a team that will not be easily beaten at home or away.

Our encounters against Well have been pretty even Steven over the piece and we have managed to pick up points in half of our encounters. In fact we won there in the league on our first four visits and were fast becoming a bit of a bogey side for them before they got to grips with us and won the next four! Our last visit to Fir Park was back in January this year when Gregory Tade got the winner on 67 minutes with a cracking strike. Our record at Motherwell in all competitions reads W6 D3 L6 so, if your the kind of guy that studies these kind of statistics before heading to the bookies, you will not have an easy decision to make. And out of all 30 encounters between the two sides there has only ever one 0-0 draw so expect goals for this one. (There, that's put the kiss of death on that!).

Whilst Motherwell were enjoying the sun of Spain we had a mid-week encounter in the holiday resort of...Arbroath in a League Cup encounter. Bearing in mind the other results in this tournament, and us coming off the back of a wretched display against Celtic, nobody would have blamed folk for writing this one off before a ball was kicked. But ICT showed that they can bounce back from disappointment and hopefully they can apply the same energy on Sunday and get a decent result in the league, where possibly, it matters the most. ICT have had a day extra to recover from their mid-week game but I expect their journey back home was slower than Motherwell's! Hopefully the boys will be encouraged by the cup result and take this into the SPL game at Fir Park.

Current form ICT:-
The bounce back from the awful Celtic result was pleasing and it was also encouraging to see the amount of shots we took against Arbroath. Apart from last Saturday our form hasn't been too bad. We've managed to adapt to a more passing type of game but we still lack that security at the back and are exposed on far too many occasions. We go into this game on the back of a great result in a banana skin cup tie so hopefully this has added some confidence back in the side.

Current form Motherwell:-
After four SPL games they remain unbeaten and look to be a fairly solid outfit. Their home league form is very similar to ours in having not won yet but have only drawn their two games so far. Their European exploits may have an effect but, with the extra games they've played, they should know more about each other than their SPL rivals.

Team news
Inverness:– We expected new signing Reguero to play between the sticks in mid-week but it wasn't to be. Could he make his first team debut for this one? Probably not is my view. I would expect Terry Butcher to select the same starting eleven as Wednesday night but I believe Foran should be back after his suspension. We will, of course, be without Nick Ross through injury.

Motherwell:– A few players were 'rested' for the Euro game where they featured several teenagers. I doubt that McCall will entertain such changes in the SPL and I'd expect him to field the same side that lined up against St Mirren last time out. Hutchinson was red carded in that game (second yellow) so could be suspended for this game.

Gringo's prediction:– Another tough call for this one. Hopefully ICT will be encouraged by the fine win in that dodgy cup-tie at Arbroath and Motherwell will be travel weary. But didn't we think that about Celtic going into last weekends game? I don't think we can go by past games at Fir Park and we really need to be up for this from the start and also throughout the 90 minutes. I believe we do have the players (if we can keep them on the pitch for the full 90) to get a result in this match but it will be a tight affair, so, I will gladly settle for a 1-1 draw.

Latest Team News
Inverness have Foran and Jones back from suspension but Nick Ross is out along with Chris Hogg.

Motherwell will be without the suspended Shaun Hutchinson and Steven Saunders is out after knee surgery. There are doubts over Michael Higdon and Stevie Hammell, but McCall is confident that one or two of the players who were carrying knocks will make the squad. Those he is waiting on are Nicky Law, Simon Ramsden and Tom Hately who all missed out in Valencia.

Inverness CT -V- Celtic - Report

Painful viewing
Inverness slumped to their worst ever home defeat to Celtic as they were humiliated on their own pitch by a rampant Celtic.
The gulf in class was clearly evident as the champions strolled to an embarrassingly easy win over a hapless bunch of journeymen and kids as our two experienced heads sat in the stand, unable to participate because of rashness akin to schoolboys.
I won't go into great detail, but suffice to say that Celtic bossed this game from the start until the last ten minutes when the industrious Ross Draper stole a couple of goals to deny Celtic a much more emphatic win that their superiority deserved.
I'm sorry to report that this was certainly a case of men against boys, and Celtic were not the boys. We were like rabbits caught in the headlights, simply overwhelmed by the champions who were able to cut us open every time they got the ball. The only surprise was that it was only 2-0 at half time as Mulgrew cracked the bar with a brilliant free kick and numerous chances went astray, or Esson denied them the glory of more goals.
As early as the fourth minute, the imposing Wanyama rose unchallenged to power a header home. It was a mystery how Celtic took another twenty minutes to increase their lead, but there was nothing surer, they were going to do it sooner or later. Watt brushed aside a powder puff challenge to waltz through the Inverness back line and coolly slot the ball behind an exposed Ryan Esson.
Inverness were all at sea at this point especially Raven who was caught out time and time again. Our midfield was non-existent and our strikers were nowhere to be seen.
Half Time 0-2
The misery was piled on after the resumption and it was no surprise when Celtic went 3-0 up with a superb text book strike straight off the training ground, Mulgrew doing the needful. Watt stroked home his second and Celtic's fourth as the disgruntled home support could scarcely watch, many now removing themselves from the scene to relieve the pain. At this point, had it been under the Marquess of Queensberry rules, then the referee would have stopped the contest, or Butcher would have thrown in the towel.
We did though, bounce back off the ropes and Draper scored a couple of consolation goals as Celtic took their foot off the gas......thank Christ for that. The second being set up nicely with a chipped cross from Conor Pepper who continues to show promise.

Full Time 2-4
Inverness CT: Esson, Raven (Meekings 54), Graeme Shinnie,Warren, McKay, Draper, Andrew Shinnie, Ross (Pepper 66),King, Doran, Sutherland (Morrison 54). Subs not used: Reguero (GK), Laing, Polworth, Whyte.
Celtic: Forster, Matthews (Bangura 68), Izaguirre (Chalmers 76), Wilson,McCourt, Mulgrew, Lustig, Watt, Twardzik, Wanyama, Hooper (Forrest 65). Sub not used: Zaluska (GK), Slane, Irvine, McGregor.
Referee: Willie Collum.
Attendance: 6,100.
A six goal thriller? No, an absolutely embarrassing humiliation and we were fortunate not to lose another half dozen goals.
Where do we go from here? To be honest there is little we can do but get behind the team, remember, for better or for worse. Times are hard, there is no money in the kitty and we will find it difficult to be competitive this season. That I'm afraid is the economics of the game in the lower echelons of the SPL.
I may have been harsh in my chosen words, but sadly, that is the reality of the day, a day where thousands more witnessed it on telly. There is little point in constantly sniping about Butcher when his hands are tied by the finances, what we see is what we get, and what we get is what we see. You can't buy the quality of players we see on TV every week with no money and we will just have to go with what we have at the moment.
Ross Draper was our man of the match, unfortunately there were eleven better ones wearing green on Saturday. However, we have a league of our own within the SPL and that is the games where we need to channel our energies towards, against teams at our level as this is going to be a difficult season for more than just Inverness.
It's all doom and gloom. We just have to write off these games against Celtic as we can't compete against their multi-million pound charges, but we need to keep an eye on the Dundee's the St Johnstone's and the St Mirren's of this league, they are our real competitors.
Let's get behind the team, they need our support more than ever.

Arbroath -V- Inverness CT - League Cup

Teaser Paragraph:
League Cup action at Arbroath

Inverness head for the seaside on wednesday evening to take on the 'Red Lichties' in a Scottish Communities League Cup tie at Gayfield, Arbroath. Named after the red lights that used to guide fishing boats back to the safety of the harbour, Arbroath is famous for a couple of things. Smokies, the delicacy made from salted and smoked haddock, and a 36-0 humping of Bon Accord in the Scottish Cup on 12th September 1885, and that included a disallowed goal. It was a good day for goals that day as Dundee Harp racked up a 35-0 win over Aberdeen Rovers and Heilan Dee and Gringo had plenty to talk about as they supped their real ale over a barrel of smokies.

Gringo has given us a preview ahead of this banana skin game and here are his thoughts below...........

A trip to Pleasureland and Gayfield.................ooerrr missus

Last Saturday's disastrous result against the champions should have the desired effect on the side to go out and right the wrongs of that dreadful performance. We take a break from SPL duty and return to 'grass roots' football and a chance to return to the real world of terracing, corrugated tin roofs and concrete toilets. However, despite the nostalgia to be gleamed at these grounds the single the main attraction of any visit to Arbroath is a chance to take on a smokie or two! Smokies, a beer and football........should be like this for every game?

The Scottish Communities League Cup offers us the chance to go on a cup run of biblical proportions but, as we well know from past experiences, this competition doesn't hold too many happy memories for the ICT faithful. It was a Wednesday night back in 2008 when we last went to Arbroath which was in the same competition. A massive crowd of almost 600 saw us force a penalty shoot out after being pegged back twice in the game. We won the shoot out 4-2. We actually reached the quarter finals that season which is a rarity in itself.

These competitions are special to the fans but, unfortunately, do not attract big crowds especially in the early stages of the competition. We enjoyed many a giant killing in our early days in Scottish league football but the boot is now well and truly on the other foot. We are now the 'giants' and potential scalps for sides like Arbroath. The history between us goes right back to our first ever League fixture when we beat them 5-2 at Telford Street. To date we have won 18 of the 27 meetings and can 'boast' a 100% record in Cup competitions...its only been three mind but a 100% record all the same.

Arbroath are currently managed by former ICT legend Paul Sheerin and if anybody knows about how to go about giant killing he surely does. Who can forget his penalty on that infamous night in Glasgow? He will have his side well up for this tie, no question about that. How ICT will respond to this is anybody's guess but, as mentioned above, the lads should be very keen to put Saturday's result behind them and go all out to make sure a giant killing doesn't happen. For many of the side this is a new contest for them having never played in it before. The ground may also be a shock to the system to some of our English lads and if the winds blowing they'll probably get sand in the their eyes and the only wave they could expect see would be that of the North sea. It sounds like I'm making excuses for our cup exit already doesn't it?

Current form:- ICT
Despite Saturday's awful display the side haven't been playing that badly. We were unbeaten in 6 games (league) up until then. Our playing style has changed for the better this term with some good passing going on. We still lack that cutting edge in front of goal and are very dodgy at the back. Concentration will be the key throughout this game. Our commitment and desire to win has been evident in our first two away games this term and hopefully this will continue.

Current form:- Arbroath:
They have had a great start to the season and are currently unbeaten and sit on top of the second division. In their last game they game from 2-0 down at Alloa to win 2-3 and played the last 25 minutes of the match with ten men. Their confidence going into this game will be sky high. However, just like ICT, they have conceded in every game this term so far.

Team news

Inverness – As always Terry Butcher will see this a chance for some of the squad players to get some football in but, hopefully, he will have some experience on the bench just in case things do go wrong. There is no doubt that this will be a chance for us to see Reguero in action in goal and Liam Polworth to have a start. Owain Tudor-Jones may feature after serving his ban. Conor Pepper is also likely to start as is Gavin Morrison but Nick Ross will be absent through injury after dislocating his shoulder against Celtic.

Arbroath – I would expect Paul Sheerin to field his strongest side for this encounter. However, he could be without Daniel Rennie who was sent off at Alloa last Saturday. In Darren Gribben they have what looks like a potential top scorer in this division as he has bagged seven goals so far this term. There's not much scope in their squad to change things around. A few ex-County players in their ranks, Tony Bullock the flamboyant keeper, Alex Keddie at centre back and Derek Holmes a striker who knows how to find the net.

Gringo's prediction:– There is no doubt that this will be a tough encounter for ICT who will have to be on top of their game to get a favourable result. I believe we do have the players to pull this off and they do posses the desire and urge to right the wrongs of last weekend. This is a tie that is winnable but it wont be easy and may possibly go to extra time, which we don't want. I will settle for a nerve jangling 2-1 win for ICT.

Inverness CT -V- Celtic - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Breakfast football

It's an early kick off at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium this Saturday (12:45) as Celtic, for the second week running visit the Highlands for a lunchtime start, this time against Inverness. Well travelled Celtic have been to Helsinki, Philadelphia, Dingwall, Helsingborg and now Inverness in successive games. Sounds like something from an episode of Only Fools and Horses!

Both sides left it late last weekend to snatch draws in time added on. For Inverness, young Conor Pepper salvaged a draw for the ten man Highlanders in the capital, whilst Neil Lennon's champions struggled to subdue a spritely Ross County as Kris Commons equalised after a thunderous free kick from Richard Brittain had opened the scoring, Counties first ever SPL goal.

For the second week running, Inverness were reduced to ten men. This time Richie Foran was sent packing after a rash lunge at Ryan McGowan on the halfway line. Foran should really know better than this, but he continually pushes the refs to the limits and he can have little complaints or sympathy after his most recent indiscretion. Considering he was just back after missing the opening two games through suspension then it would appear that he has not learned anything and surely the time has come for Butcher to get his golden bollocks to toe the line or face the punishment that fits the crime. Foran's ommission comes on top of Jones' ban and they will both sit out this TV encounter with Celtic.

Our squad is thin enough without having a man sent off every week and having two vastly experienced players missing for this game could be detrimental to our chances of remaining unbeaten this season. One thing that could sway it back in our favour is that Celtic had a European tie at Helsingborgs to contend with and they won't enjoy another trek to the Highlands in the same week either.

Ki Sung-yueng will not be here on Saturday, he will be joining Swansea for a fee believed to be around £5 or £6 million. That will give Celtic a £3 to £4 million pound profit for the 23 year old South Korean, and will help to pay off some of their £7 million debt the club revealed in February.

Skipper Scott Brown, striker Gary Hooper, midfielder Paddy McCourt and winger James Forrest all missed the 1-1 draw with Ross County in Dingwall on Saturday, Lennon saving them for the Champions league game in Sweden.

Celtic warmed up for this one with a Champions League Qualifier against Helsingborgs IF and they made a quick start to the game, Commons scoring in the first couple of minutes. Joe Ledley went off injured after an hour and Commons followed with Hooper hobbling off at the end. Samaras scored a decisive second but the scoreline is not as interesting to me as the injury list, with a trip to Inverness looming.

Recent Form

The last six encounters in the Highlands (including two SFA Cup games) show Celtic winning four with one no scoring draw and a solitary victory for Inverness, one which still hurts the Celtic fans. A 3-2 victory saw Celtic blow their title aspirations in May 2011 and allowed a now defunct Glasgow club to pinch the league championship. One young man had one of his finest games for ICT that day and scored a stunning goal. Alas, Shane Sutherland has struggled somewhat since his early promise, being played mainly out wide, possibly not his strongest position, but it's not for the want of trying. Other scorers for Inverness that day were Mulgrew (og) and departing defender Grant Munro. Kris Commons scored both Celtic's goals, the second one a penalty in stoppage time.

Latest Team News

Inverness have the two suspended players out, bad boys Foran and Jones. Boss Butcher decided not to contest the red card decision as it would have been a waste of time. Guilty as charged m'lud. Jason Oswell has an achilles injury and Chris Hogg is still missing from his long term knee damage. Butcher has a choice to make in midfield where either Morrison or Ross will fill the gap left by the red carded pair, and a change of tactics is on the cards as well.

Celtic boss Neil Lennon has midweek knocks to contend with. Rogne, Brown, Hooper, Commons, Kayal and Ledley all struggled at Helsingborgs. With McGeough, and Stokes still injured, it seems that they are joined by Kayal (ankle) and Ledley (groin) with the other walking wounded trying to make the squad for Inverness. Tony Watt and James Forrest came through the game though, and Forrest especially looked very dangerous driving at the defence and will be a handful for any defenders in the SPL. Mo Bangura could be ready to return from a thigh strain.

Hearts -V- Inverness CT - Report

Pepper spices up Tynecastle feast of football
Inverness Caledonian Thistle staged a late comeback to snatch a draw from the jaws of defeat. We had no right to take a point with captain Richie Foran being red carded before the break and two goals down to a Novikovas strike and a baffling penalty decision that only referee Bobby Madden saw. Not even slow motion replays of the 'incident' showed what Mr Madden thought he saw. However another equally baffling penalty saw Andy Shinnie throw us a lifeline and the away fans jubilation was complete as substitute Conor Pepper was on hand to knock home the equaliser in stoppage time.
Butcher was certainly animated by this and he orchestrated the applause of the away support as he soaked up the scenes of joy from the away day fans, with the Hearts faithful leaving the stadium shaking their heads in disbelief.
Capital Caley was on hand to witness this fighting display and his report follows
Whilst most people in Edinburgh were tucking in to their famous salt ‘n sauce suppers on Saturday night, the Caley Thistle fans were having extra pepper on theirs. (Sorry, it had to be done!!!) This was an absolute roller coaster game that had it all, and Caley Thistle came away with a well deserved point. Conor Peppers goal in the 3rd and final minute of injury time capped off a great week for the 17 years old from Ireland. A great result in his exams, a first team debut and the equalising goal.
Members of Caley Jags Together took in the hospitality at the Gorgie Suite before the start of the game. After our complimentary drinks we headed round to the away end full of anticipation. The first half did not have much cheer for us though. A few minutes in and Andrew Shinnie had the first chance of the game, but his shot trickled wide. Graeme Shinnies shot shortly after also failed to hit the target. After this initial bright start by Caley Thistle, Hearts started to take a grip of the game. Andrew Drivers shot on 13 minutes produced a comfortable save from Ryan Esson. Two minutes later and Hearts went one nil up. The ball was crossed wide to Arvydas Novikovas and with Esson rushing out to meet him, the ball was curled round into the back of the net.
Hearts were having the better of the play in the first half and deserved to be leading. However, they went 2-0 up on the 40th minute amid controversy. The ball was crossed in from Mehdi Taouil and punched clear from Ryan Esson. There was a collision between Esson and Marious Zaliukas and we assumed we were getting the free kick. But then Madden ran over, pointed at Simon King, flashed a yellow card and pointed at the penalty spot! King was adjudged to have pushed a Hearts player (no idea which Hearts player though, could have been Jamie MacDonald for all we knew). John Sutton stepped up to send Esson the wrong way and unjustly put Hearts up 2-0. If this wasn’t bad enough, it got worse during first half stoppage time. Ross Draper was fouled by a Hearts player in the centre of the pitch but the referee waved play on and with Draper still lying on the deck, a wild lunge by Captain Richie Foran on Ryan McGowan earned him a straight red card and a free kick to Hearts. It was a bad challenge by Foran but debatable whether it was a red card.
Half Time 2-0
With the Caley Thistle support deflated at half time, manager Terry Butcher would not give up on the match. One minute into the second half Shane Sutherland had a pop at goal but it went well wide. Andrew Driver then tried to extend Hearts lead but was well off target. On the 52nd minute David Raven was replaced by Josh Meekings. Gary Warren was the next Caley Thistle player to try his luck at goal again shooting wide. Just before the hour mark Graeme Shinnies ran into the Hearts box and was tripped by Callum Paterson. Older brother Andrew Shinnie stepped up to reduce the deficit placing the ball high into the top corner. Aaron Doran was then replaced by Nick Ross.
Ryan McGowan should have sealed victory for Hearts but he missed the chance of the match, pulling a shot well wide from 12 yards with only Esson to beat.

After an even and entertaining end to end period, Andrew Shinnie was replaced by debutant Conor Pepper with 10 minutes left. With 5 minutes to go Shane Sutherland nearly equalised for Caley Thistle but blazed his shot over the bar. Grame Shinnie then had a chance but failed to hit the target. Ten man Caley Thistle were now pressing for the equaliser at full pelt. Conor Pepper was impressing with his runs down the right wing. With 3 minutes of stoppage time, it looked like the game was up as we entered into the 3rd minute. But it was perfect timing for Caley Thistle. Graeme Shinnies cross floated to Pepper who slotted the ball into the roof of the next with the last kick of the game.
As the referee blew for full time, the Caley Thistle support and players went ballistic. To be 2 goals down and a man down at half time and to clinch the draw in stoppage time felt like a victory. It was back to the chants of Caley Away with Terry and Mo! The players lapped up the applause and Terry Butcher was back to his entertaining conducting of the fans. As the supporters bus headed back to the Highlands and a few of us went back to the Gorgie Suite to discuss the match, we all seem to be in agreement. The entertainment factor is back. Butcher has assembled a squad that can entertain and if we play like we did in the second half every week we can have a fantastic season.
Full Time 2-2
Seven bookings and a red card, an injury time goal..................who said Scottish football was dull?

Teaser Paragraph:
Festival of Football at Tynecastle

Scottish Cup holders Hearts will host Inverness Caledonian Thistle this weekend in the third SPL game of the season as the Edinburgh Festival gets into full swing.

Inverness have failed to hold on to a lead in both of their opening fixtures, being pegged back to draws at Paisley and Inverness although it is a better start to the campaign than last term. Things looked bright in the opening exchanges against Killie last week but failure to add to the early goal from midfielder Andy Shinnie saw the visitors claw their way back into the match and level the scores before half-time, well a couple of minutes into time added on at the interval. This lack of concentration is a worrying trend with Inverness losing vital goals at very late stages of either half with annoying regularity.

Hearts started their season off with victory at home against St Johnstone and an unconvincing draw in the Edinburgh derby last Sunday. They too have yet to establish their best line up and formation after the departure of some of their high earners at the end of their cup winning season. Notable leavers are Ian Black, Craig Beattie who has joined St Johnstone, Suso Santana and the excellent Rudi Skacel. They will be without the services of David Templeton who has been banned for two games after lashing out at James McPake in the Edinburgh derby and likewise Inverness will have the red misted Owain Tudur-Jones absent after his aberration against Kilmarnock.

Capital Caley gives us an insight into this game with this preview

We head down to Tynecastle for our second away day of the season. It’s been an interesting to the season. A draw away from home to St Mirren and a draw at home to Kilmarnock in games that we could have won if we had taken our chances. Hearts started strongly against St Johnstone with an easy 2-0 win. However, next up was derby rivals Hibernian. Most neutrals would have predicted a Hearts win, but they were surprisingly poor and could only manage the draw.

Caley Thistle are in a much better shape than they were this time last season. We had lost both of the opening games to Motherwell and Hibs. We were already plagued and the opening performances were very poor. Things are looking a lot brighter now. We have two more points in the bag. So far, the starting XI / squad is stable (with the exception of Owain-Tudur-Jones after last weeks moment of madness!!!). We still have players such as Chris Hogg to come back but the important thing is the players who have played in the first two games have done well. Aaran Doran is looking great and if he can keep his performances up, he will be an asset to the squad. Terry Butcher has also changed the style of play this season which is a breathe of fresh air. We are enjoyable to watch again. However, I do not expect us to do well in every game. Last week we certainly didn’t play well in the second half. However, the passing play was there without the need for a hoof. With Captain Richie Foran back for the Hearts game (and presumably replacing the suspended OTJ) we will have that leadership spark in midfield that will help motivate the players against Hearts.

It’s great to have Richie back but in saying that, we played well enough against St Mirren without him. But from a happy clapper perspective, imagine how well we will play with him back in the starting line up!!! I am hopeful anyway. Despite the financial difficulties within the SPL and the implications of Rangers going bust and a new team representing the city of Glasgow entering the 3rd Division, I don’t think the Caley Thistle community has ever been so united. The Supporters Trust and Supporters Club coming together to create Caley Jags Together looks to be a success. The new Juanjo Away Supporters Group is small in numbers but it’s an exciting new project that I am delighted to be involved with. The Couriers ‘All Together Now’ campaign is helping to get more publicity for the club. It’s a shame we can’t get more people from Inverness to come along to watch the games. I’m sure if they came along to Tynecastle on Saturday they would see a great game. Unfortunately, far too many are interested in supporting teams that represent different citys. Each to their own though. However, with free offered at last weeks game and £6 entry to the Gorgie Suite this Saturday for Caley Jags Together, you cannot fault the club and fans involved with the club for trying.

Back to the match itself and I think it will be very easy to the team again. Obviously OTJ is out. He will be a miss for sure. But, I’d imagine Richie will take his place and assume the role of Captain again. After that, there may not be much need to change the team too much. Many of the CTO posters would like to see Nick Ross start and maybe Terry is thinking this also. However, my guess at Butcher's line up would be the same as last week with Richie instead of OTJ.

Caley Thistles last trip to Tynecastle resulted in a 2-1 defeat with Ross Tokely getting an equaliser just after half time before the Jambos went 2-1 up. It’s a game that we played well but our defence were caught out far too often. We have had a reasonable amount of success at Gorgie through the years. One of the more recent occasions was the 1-1 draw on 4th December 2010. We were plucky that day. Hearts battered our goal in the second half but the defence was solid and we hung on for the draw. In fact, we could have won that game as Russell Duncan missed a one on one chance in front of goal in the last minute. But that draw was a big result for Caley Thistle as it meant we were then 13 months unbeaten away from home but also with no more away games that month, a whole calendar year unbeaten away from home. It was twenty-ten with Terry and Mo! After the great atmosphere generated by the fans at Paisley on the first game of the season, it would be great to generate the same, if not better atmosphere at Tynecastle. Judging by remarks from certain players, it would appear that they were very appreciative of the support at the St Mirren game. We may be small in numbers, but we can still make a noise. Lets roar on the team to 3 points.

Caley Jags Together, Juanjo Away, All together now, Caley Away with Terry and Mo!

CapitalCaleys prediction:-
If we keep the ball on the deck and play like we did against Coventry, St Mirren and the first 20 minutes of Kilmarnock then we could actually win this game. It will be difficult though. Hearts should contend for the 2nd spot and could even push Celtic all the way. However, we have Foran back and on our day we can beat anyone. We are playing good football, there is an increased team morale, there is a feel good factor with (most of) the fans and if we give the team our backing, we have a great chance. If we do win though, it will be at a slim margin. Hearts have winger David Templeton out for this one which will be a massive loss for them. I’m going to sit on the fence on this one. I could be a draw, or a slim victory for either team.

All together now..........Caley Away with Terry and Mo!

Latest Team News
Inverness will welcome back captain Richie Foran after the skipper missed the first two games of the season due to suspension. He will slot straight into the side with Owain Tudur-Jones being suspended. Chris Hogg is still not back to full fitness yet. Other than that Butcher has a full squad to choose from.

John McGlynn has a couple of missing players. Templeton is suspended and young keeper Mark Ridgers is out for at least three months with ligament damage sustained in the u21 international in midweek. Jamie Hammil is definitely out with a knee injury. Mehdi Taouil may not start as he is fasting during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and a full ninety minutes may be too much for him. Peter Enckelman has signed a short term deal as the Jambo's goalkeeping crisis deepens. With Ridgers sidelined, regular keeper Jamie MacDonald may need some time off soon as his partner is expecting their first child anytime now and the big Finn may well find himself thrust into the action soon.

Over the Bridge there is an interesting early kick off at 12:15 as Ross County entertain league champions Celtic and this will be an early indicator as to whether the new kids on the block will hack it in the SPL. So far so good for County with two draws, but no goals yet.

ICT -V- Kilmarnock - Report

All square in the Highlands

Kilmarnock's long trip to Inverness saw them take a point from an open game, which keaves both clubs looking for their first win of the season.

Andrew Shinnie netted the opener for Inverness in the eighth minute but Manual Pascali equalised deep into stoppage time at the interval. Danny Racchi had an opportunity to score Killie's first goal but Ryan Esson made a superb double save to deny the Killie sub.

Sell out Saturday was not what it said on the tin as a sparse away crowd was sprinkled across the away stand and the home fans bathed in sunshine on a beautiful summer afternoon. Only 3012 made the effort to watch this SPL encounter. Killie drew the first trick of the day and made Inverness play towards the North Stand in the first half. Not many knew what to expect for the first home game and it was pleasing to see Inverness trying to play the ball on the deck.

The home side started briskly and forced Kilmarnock onto the back foot and within four minutes the visitors brought on Danny Racchi for the injured Gary Harkins. A serious of forays forward saw Inverness win a corner and from this Aaron Doran's ball was played to Shinnie via Draper and he knocked the ball in fron the angle of the six yard box to confirm the home sides bright start to the match.

The home fans were certainly encouraged by the opening twenty minutes and the tricky Doran should have doubled the lead as he bore down on goal, but Bell stood tall and blocked the effort which was eventually scrambled clear by the under pressure Killie defence, one attempt being cleared off the line.

However, the early flurry from Inverness quickly dissipated and Kilmarnock realised they could give us a contest and the game then became more even with Killie now starting to dominate possession without really threatening to score.

A Doran free kick from 25 yards was comfortably gathered by Cammy Bell as the game became stretched but on the half hour mark Racchi was upended in the box by Draper as Killie began to turn the screw. He dusted himself down and took the penalty himself but Esson reacted brilliantly and threw himself to the right to block the shot, then managed to block the rebound from Dayton to keep Inverness ahead.

Not content with saving the penalty, we released the ball quickly and Shane Sutherland drove straight at the heart of the Killie defence but his 20 yard effort was easily saved by Bell.

James Dayton left the field on a stretcher after 36 minutes to be replaced by Rory McKenzie as Killie shuffled the pack once more before half time.

However, the five minutes of added time became a significant factor as Killie pressed for an equaliser before half time and as Inverness failed to clear another corner, Manual Pascali was on hand to bundle home a scrappy goal to level the contest in the 47th minute.

Half Time 1-1

The game continued in the same vein after the break with both sides looking to get the winner.

Doran, McKay and Sutherland all tried their luck with Shane being the only one to work the keeper, as the game became a bit tousy with a series of free kicks disrupting the flow of the game.

Inverness were fortunate not to fall behind as a free header went over the bar as Killie pushed forward, Liam Kelly squandering that opportunity, but chances went abegging at both ends, Kelly firing wide in another burst forward.

We saw a new side to Owain Tudur-Jones as the big Welshman literally saw red. As he surged forward with ten minutes to go, Fowler lived up to his name and brought down the gentle giant. He was booked for that, but not before big Owain thrust his head in the direction of Fowler's face and rightly was given a straight red for his rush of blood to the head.

Inverness brought on Gavin Morrison in an attempt to hold onto the point we had and we almost snatched all three but for a fantastic point blank save from Cammy Bell as he denied substitute Nick Ross the winner from Raven's cross.

Still time for Killie to make the home fans sweat as another free header went wide from Nelson and Esson saved a Kelly free kick but the home side held on for a deserved point.

Full Time 1-1

Overall, a point each was about right in an entertaining game where both sides always looked for a winner. Both keepers were outstanding and not for the first time Bell denied Inverness with some wonderful stops. Esson came back well after last weeks loose display and his double save at the penalty was superb. Doran started brightly but faded as the game wore on and the defence grew in confidence the longer they played together.

Men of the Match:- Both keepers made match winning saves and it's difficult to split them, Bell's save at the end from Ross had us all holding our head in our hands in disbelief.
