ICT -V- Kilmarnock - Report

All square in the Highlands

Kilmarnock's long trip to Inverness saw them take a point from an open game, which keaves both clubs looking for their first win of the season.

Andrew Shinnie netted the opener for Inverness in the eighth minute but Manual Pascali equalised deep into stoppage time at the interval. Danny Racchi had an opportunity to score Killie's first goal but Ryan Esson made a superb double save to deny the Killie sub.

Sell out Saturday was not what it said on the tin as a sparse away crowd was sprinkled across the away stand and the home fans bathed in sunshine on a beautiful summer afternoon. Only 3012 made the effort to watch this SPL encounter. Killie drew the first trick of the day and made Inverness play towards the North Stand in the first half. Not many knew what to expect for the first home game and it was pleasing to see Inverness trying to play the ball on the deck.

The home side started briskly and forced Kilmarnock onto the back foot and within four minutes the visitors brought on Danny Racchi for the injured Gary Harkins. A serious of forays forward saw Inverness win a corner and from this Aaron Doran's ball was played to Shinnie via Draper and he knocked the ball in fron the angle of the six yard box to confirm the home sides bright start to the match.

The home fans were certainly encouraged by the opening twenty minutes and the tricky Doran should have doubled the lead as he bore down on goal, but Bell stood tall and blocked the effort which was eventually scrambled clear by the under pressure Killie defence, one attempt being cleared off the line.

However, the early flurry from Inverness quickly dissipated and Kilmarnock realised they could give us a contest and the game then became more even with Killie now starting to dominate possession without really threatening to score.

A Doran free kick from 25 yards was comfortably gathered by Cammy Bell as the game became stretched but on the half hour mark Racchi was upended in the box by Draper as Killie began to turn the screw. He dusted himself down and took the penalty himself but Esson reacted brilliantly and threw himself to the right to block the shot, then managed to block the rebound from Dayton to keep Inverness ahead.

Not content with saving the penalty, we released the ball quickly and Shane Sutherland drove straight at the heart of the Killie defence but his 20 yard effort was easily saved by Bell.

James Dayton left the field on a stretcher after 36 minutes to be replaced by Rory McKenzie as Killie shuffled the pack once more before half time.

However, the five minutes of added time became a significant factor as Killie pressed for an equaliser before half time and as Inverness failed to clear another corner, Manual Pascali was on hand to bundle home a scrappy goal to level the contest in the 47th minute.

Half Time 1-1

The game continued in the same vein after the break with both sides looking to get the winner.

Doran, McKay and Sutherland all tried their luck with Shane being the only one to work the keeper, as the game became a bit tousy with a series of free kicks disrupting the flow of the game.

Inverness were fortunate not to fall behind as a free header went over the bar as Killie pushed forward, Liam Kelly squandering that opportunity, but chances went abegging at both ends, Kelly firing wide in another burst forward.

We saw a new side to Owain Tudur-Jones as the big Welshman literally saw red. As he surged forward with ten minutes to go, Fowler lived up to his name and brought down the gentle giant. He was booked for that, but not before big Owain thrust his head in the direction of Fowler's face and rightly was given a straight red for his rush of blood to the head.

Inverness brought on Gavin Morrison in an attempt to hold onto the point we had and we almost snatched all three but for a fantastic point blank save from Cammy Bell as he denied substitute Nick Ross the winner from Raven's cross.

Still time for Killie to make the home fans sweat as another free header went wide from Nelson and Esson saved a Kelly free kick but the home side held on for a deserved point.

Full Time 1-1

Overall, a point each was about right in an entertaining game where both sides always looked for a winner. Both keepers were outstanding and not for the first time Bell denied Inverness with some wonderful stops. Esson came back well after last weeks loose display and his double save at the penalty was superb. Doran started brightly but faded as the game wore on and the defence grew in confidence the longer they played together.

Men of the Match:- Both keepers made match winning saves and it's difficult to split them, Bell's save at the end from Ross had us all holding our head in our hands in disbelief.

Inverness CT -V- Kilmarnock - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Killie take the high road.

Kilmarnock make the long trek to Inverness this weekend for our first home game of the season, after both sides started the campaign with draws in their openers.

Kenny Shiels was less than enthusiastic with the realisation that Killie will have to double their trips to the Highlands this season with the introduction of those over the bridge to the SPL. Boo hoo Kenny, it's the same distance from Inverness to Kilmarnock as it is from Kilmarnock to Inverness: Put up or shut up. Let's hope his pub crawl round Kilmarnock has gained them some more fans as they attempt to beat the football recession.

Last week Inverness rang the changes as the season got underway and the team seem to have gelled a bit quicker than last seasons slow starters. A point from Paisley is not to be sniffed at as the Saints came from behind in time added on to snatch a draw at the death. 2-2 was the final score with Nick Ross and Billy McKay netting the Inverness goals, and Ross Draper being welcomed to the SPL by St Mirren's Lewis Guy who saw red for sending Draper onto the turf.

Killie opened their season at Rugby Park against team 12, who turned out to be Dundee. It proceeded to be a pretty dour affair and Dundee were well worth their point in a no scoring draw. Killie may well suffer financially because of the demise of the Govan tax dodgers and new signings are more difficult to come by.

So, what does the new season hold for Inverness? Plenty of changes to personnel and a mostly new squad for the fans to get to grips with. Esson will still be number one choice, but the back four are still getting to know one another. Last week we started with Raven - Warren - King and G Shinnie, with Meekings replacing Dave the Rave after an hour. That seemed to give us a more solid look and we took control of the game. Our midfield saw Ross Draper join more familiar names in Owain Tudur-Jones, Aaron Doran, Andy Shinnie and Shane Sutherland who was effectively replaced by Nick Ross. Billy McKay is being asked to play the lone striker role again and hopefully the ball might arrive at his feet more often as he is well capable of turning big defenders on the deck. With Richie Foran sitting out his suspension last weekend, then his added dig to midfield will be a boost for the squad, but not for another week.

Saturdays visitors have added Jeroen Tesselaar to their squad in the close season. The Dutch full back signed on from St Mirren and made an impressive debut last weekend against Team 12. Another addition this term is Rory Boulding who scored 11 goals for Livingston last season. Young Mathew Kennedy also impressed on the wing and his trickery will give defenders problems. In Cammy Bell, Killie have one of the top Scottish keepers to give his defenders plenty of confidence, he always seems to perform well against us. Glorious Gary Harkins is one to watch. The former Partick and Dundee midfielder possesses the silky skills to link the midfield and strikers and his accuracy with the ball can be used to good effect at set pieces. Dean Shiels will be a big miss for Kille. The striker is now working down at Govan for The Rangers.

Head to Head

This fixture in Inverness has been kind to the homesters. In fourteen encounters in all competitions, the home side have the edge with 6 wins to 4, with 4 draws. We hold the upper hand in goals scored, 27-22 and have scored 3 goals on five occasions, although one of those was a 3-4 reverse in December 2006. Last season we secured 7 points from Killie with goals aplenty. The highlight for Inverness being a surprisingly stunning 3-6 win at Kilmarnock with Andy Shinnie scoring a hat-trick and recently departed Gregory Tade notching a brace. Hayes scored the other in what was Caley Thistles highest scoring SPL match ever. The games at Inverness ended with one home victory and one draw.

Latest Team News

Inverness boss Terry Butcher will not have the services of Captain Richie Foran this week as he serves the second of a two match ban carried over from last season. Chris Hogg is still in rehab after last seasons serious knee damage but will be nearing fitness in a few weeks. The pain in Spain falls mainly on Antonio Reguero's finger as he has suffered a suspected broken finger. That brings young keeper Scott Mathieson into the squad, one of seven who have come through the ranks at Inverness. Other than that, Inverness have no fresh injury worries ahead of the game, and that makes a huge change from last seasons crisis.

Kilmarnock are expected to be on similar lines to last weeks opening game against Dundee. Paul Heffernan missed that one through injury after breaking his collar bone during training on Tuesday and faces up to three months on the sidelines. Gary Hay is requiring an operation and will be unavailable for a couple of months.

Cameron Bell, Michael Nelson, Jeroen Tesselaar, Ryan O'Leary, James Fowler, Manuel Pascali, Lee Johnson (Danny Racchi, 66), James Dayton (Rory Boulding, 66), Matthew Kennedy (Rory McKenzie, 78), Gary Harkins, Liam Kelly

tm4tj Prediction

Difficult to judge how things will pan out this early in the season, but by all accounts we have started brightly and if we can sort out the defensive lapses then I can see a continuation of our recent domination in this fixture and that could see us with our sixth win in the last eight against Killie. A narrow win for the home side for me.

St Mirren -V- Inverness CT - Report

Nearly

Inverness almost got off to a flying start in Paisley as the 2012-13 season got underway after all the legal wrangling during the close season. Unfortunately, St Mirren equalised with a goal in time added on which meant a share of the points on day one; not the worst start we have ever had.
The once mighty Glasgow Rangers have fallen foul of the rules and regulations and find themselves plying their trade in the third division under a new name, The Rangers, with Dundee pipping Dunfemline to fill the gap left by the death of an institution.
But, that is another story with plenty of mileage left in it and I will let that one run it's course as the new season has taken over the thoughts of the rest of us, and with Ross County added to the mix then there will be plenty of interest to keep us occupied.
Terry Butcher had once more wielded the axe with the last of the local hero's leaving the club in Ross Tokely. So, a new era begins for Inverness Caledonian Thistle and a much changed side took to the park on Greenhill Road in their first competitive match of the season.
Ryan Esson is one constant in the side but the rest was anyones guess as they faced a changed St Mirren at a stadium Inverness had never been beaten. Richie Foran was missing as he sat out a one match ban.
Lewis Guy was Saint and sinner for the Buddies, scoring the opener, but getting sent off in the aftermath of the injury time leveller as Inverness newbie Ross Draper was left on the turf after McGregor scored.
In between these two goals, Nick Ross had flicked home an equaliser and Billy McKay had put the visitors in front, a lead they could not build on, despite some bright work from McKay, with Andrew Shinnie warming to the task as well.
Guy had been the prominent St Mirren player trying his luck a few times and Dougie Imrie was always a threat. Big Sam Parkin was not far away with a couple of headers and got even closer as injury time loomed. His rasping shot saw a diving Ryan Esson turn the ball round the post for a corner. It was from the resultant corner that Inverness eventually lost the lead. Graeme Shinnie made a hash of trying to clear the ball and when it was fired into the box, Esson missed it at the front post and McGregor rose to guide the ball home.
Overall a few positives for Inverness. Billy McKay looked lively and has started the season with a goal and Andy Shinnie is on the way back after last seasons injury woes. Aaron Doran could be the new Jonny Hayes and Ross Draper may well be the muscle required at the back of the midfield.
A point apiece and a good day out for the Caley Away fans, the Alamo providing the shouting juice and the meeting place for the newly formed group.

Caley Jags Together

Teaser Paragraph:
CaleyThistleOnline welcomes the news on the formation of 'Caley Jags Together'. Having worked closely with both groups over the years we know what great people are involved and how much of their time they give to helping the club and the fans. Each has served it's purpose, and done it well, but we believe that by joining forces the new organisation can be greater than the sum of it's parts...something any fan should be able to appreciate since that is what has brought Inverness Caledonian Thistle to where it is today. 'Caley Jags Together' has our full support and we look forward to assisting them with spreading news and facilitating fan discussion on all things ICT.

Caley Jags Together Press Release Follows.......

ICT Supporters Trust + ICT Supporters Club = Caley Jags Together

Inverness Caledonian Thistle Supporters Trust and Supporters Club have come together to form a single fan’s organisation which will be known as ‘Caley Jags Together’.

Following discussions between the two groups and Club Chairman, Kenny Cameron, it was agreed that a united fans organisation would better represent the fans of ICT in a number of ways.

Supporters Trust, Peter Murphy commented: “In this difficult financial climate it made perfect sense to bring everything together into one group. This enables us to pull together the resources, knowledge and experience of the members of both groups while, at the same time, allowing us to deliver efficiencies in operational costs which allows more of every pound received to be used for the direct benefit of the fans and the club.”

Supporters Club, Liz Sutherland commented: “Conversations with Kenny Cameron and Terry Butcher highlighted the growing demand on time and resources for everyone and it therefore made sense that the two fan groups amalgamate and do their bit to reduce that load. The Supporters Club members agree that we should be working together towards a better future for ICT and the new name represents that desire.”

We will be working closely together over the coming weeks to ensure the transition is managed as smoothly as possible.

The new name for the fan’s group of ‘Caley Jags Together’ fits well with the Supporters Trust and Supporters Club coming together and also ties in well with the recent launch of the ‘All Together Now’ campaign which will see us, the club and the Inverness Courier working together to encourage more local support for ICT.

ICT Manager Terry Butcher was pleased by the announcement: “I think it is great. I’ve said before that we have some fantastic people at this club, and that includes the fans. The joining of the two groups is only going to make the bond between ICT, the supporters and the community even stronger and that will benefit everyone. ‘Caley Jags Together’ says it all”

One of the immediate benefits to come from the formation of ‘Caley Jags Together’ will kick in with effect from our first game of the season, an away trip to St Mirren. By taking over the operation of the Official Travel Club we believe we can deliver a more efficient service, improve the away-day experience and encourage more fans to follow ICT “on the road”.

CTO Player of the Year - 2011-12

Teaser Paragraph:
Regular readers of the forum will already know this...but the winner of CaleyThistleOnline's Player of the Year award is.....(drumroll please)....

...ROMAN GOLOBART!!!!

The Spanish defender, on loan from Wigan Athletic, takes the trophy having been voted man of the match on nine occasions, and earning Player of the Month honours in December and March. Not bad for a player who only turned 20 in March, and who marked his debut for the club in August by tripping over the ball and gifting Aberdeen a goal!

As you'd expect from a young man still learning his trade, Roman made a few mistakes along the way, not least his spectacular own goal against Kilmarnock, but his strength, attitude and composure in possession suggest he has a bright future in the game. Hopefully he can be persuaded to return to the Highlands next season, so that once more we have a player named 'Golly' to cheer for!

Golobart finished the season with 52 points, thirteen ahead of Graeme Shinnie who led the table for most of the season. Veteran Ross Tokely managed to squeeze into the bronze medal position with a strong end to the campaign.

Many thanks to all who voted - we hit a total of exactly one thousand votes over the whole campaign, ranging from 48 for the home win over Hearts in January to the six hardy souls who gave us their opinion on a Monday night defeat at Tannadice.

Roman becomes the 12th different player to win the award in the 12 seasons we have run it and the first loanee to have received it .... Not a bad side either if you put all the winners together in a team in a 4-5-1 !!! Esson, Golabek, Mann, Golabart, Tokely, Wilson, Cowie, Black, Hayes, Robson, Dargo with Keogh as the sub !

CTO Player of the Month - May

Teaser Paragraph:
After a torrid run, Caley Thistle managed to stay unbeaten in the month of May, seeing out the season with two wins and a draw, and no goals conceded. So it's no surprise that CTO's Player of the Month was goalkeeper Ryan Esson. Esson won the award for July, and finished the season as he started - so it's a relief to hear that he has signed a new two year deal which should take his spell at the club to a whopping six seasons.

Ryan finished with 35 votes across the three games, and was voted man of the match against both St. Mirren and Dunfermline. He finished just 3 votes ahead of Ross Tokely, and 9 clear of Greg Tansey (man of the match vs Hibs).

Observant readers will no doubt be able to figure out who will be named player of the year in our next article ... but until then ... here's the table for May and a list of previous monthly winners

Cafe chat

Teaser Paragraph:
Tell us about it

We all take things for granted in life. On Saturday's, many of us have a routine that we follow preparing ourselves for the matchday experience. Get up, dust ourselves down after Friday night, big breakfast, check the websites for latest gossip then off down to the pub to meet your mates and get a few beers down your throat to loosen the voice. All part of a normal Saturday's preparation for the game.

But hold on a minute. Some people are less fortunate than others and need assistance to enjoy the day out. That does not make them less of a supporter than the able bodied amongst us. But preparing for what is a routine day out for me, is a lot more challenging and can lead to barriers having to be crossed before the enjoyment begins.

Well, Keith Ferguson, the Western European Development Officer would like to hear from you if your day is not so hassle free. He is looking for stories from disabled fans to add to the CAFE; that's the Centre for Access to Football in Europe and the website is here http://www.cafefootb...-motorbike.aspx . These stories can be about anything to do with your experience attending football games. How does it make you feel, how you benefitted from the day out, how you travelled to and from the game, basically absolutely anything concerned with your day out.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Below is Keith's plea for articles to be published on the website which will encourage others to make donations. Go on, you can do it, and we can all make a difference. Be the first Inverness Caledonian Thistle fan to have your tale published, maybe a member of CLAN has a story to tell, send it to Keith or let us know here at CTO and we can promote your stories and forward them to Keith.
The CAFE - Centre for Access to Football in Europe are looking for stories of disabled fans going to live football matches.
The idea is to seek out all those personal stories about how going to a game of football can make such a difference to a disabled person’s life. Sometimes beyond watching football – employment, socialisation, more confidence, new friends…….
These stories are for our website donations page which we’ll keep going for the duration of tournament starting from anytime now.
We want to tempt people to donate – give them a reason to do so. We are also going to add brief explanations about how a certain amount donated can be used.
UEFA will be running a goal counter for their contribution and have already launched the exchangeyourjersey.comwebsite.
We have stories from Eastern Europe.
There has to be a Scottish or a Northern Ireland disabled fan out there with a story to tell!
It doesn’t have to be long.
If you have a story email it to me so I can have it uploaded to the website. mailto:[email protected]
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
Keith Ferguson
