Falkirk 4-0 Inverness CT - Report

Disaster Day as Bairns score four

Inverness Caledonian Thistle travelled to Falkirk with a chance to put clear daylight between themselves and bottom of the league Falkirk.
A lacklustre first half display saw Caley Jags going in at half time a goal down.  Despite having the better chances early in the second half they conceded again on 65 minutes and things went from bad to worse after 81 minutes when the referee deemed Esson to have brought down the last man and was red carded.
Falkirk scored from the resulting penalty and there was no way back for ICT who conceded another at the close of the match.
Falkirk pull back to within a point and the 4 goals do real damage to an already shaky goal difference.

from CTO:
A terrible match between two equally terrible teams. How there were four goals at all is anyone's guess.
The first goal looked to all the world like it was miles offside - even Finnigan initially looked like he assumed he was off.
The penalty? No idea what it was for, it was down the other end and no Falkirk player was appealing for it.
Calum Murray was appalling - every time there was a high ball one of our guys got a shove in the back.
Defensively, though, we were a joke. Djebi-Zadi had a mare. I can't remember Grant Munro ever having a worse game. He lost every header to Higdon and his distribution was utterly abysmal. The number of times I saw Mihadjuks sprinting out to wide areas to cover his team mates was astronomical - he is the only one of the back four who doesn't deserve a total kick up the arse. There is certainly a case for Hastings to return to the team - either at left back or centre back.
God knows what we were doing in the first half, lobbing high balls at Imrie and Rooney. Blackie barely got a kick in the first 45 because the ball kept being punted over his head. Proctor kept wandering in field and we had about as much width as Kate Moss. Only in the second period did we finally start putting into the channels and getting Foran in the box. Until the second goal, you would have said we were well on top.
In conclusion, a complete, unmitigated disaster. And in front of a phenomenal away support as well. (542)

Referee C Murray Attendance   Man of the Match   from BBC Sport:
Scottish Premier League bottom club Falkirk hammered Inverness to cut the gap on their opponents to one point.
Jackie McNamara's mis-hit shot was diverted into the net by Carl Finnigan on 37 minutes and Mark Stewart fired a second 20 minutes into the second half.
Inverness goalkeeper Ryan Esson was sent off for a foul on Finnigan and Scott Arfield converted the resultant penalty on 82 minutes.
Finnigan grabbed his second in injury time after being set-up by Neil McCann.
The home side enjoyed the majority of possession in the early stages but struggled to carve out scoring chances, Stewart firing over from the edge of the area after 17 minutes.
After weathering the storm, Inverness missed an excellent chance to take the lead when Rooney rounded goalkeeper Dani Mallo but was beaten by the angle as the shot went off target.
Falkirk went back on the offensive and went in front when McNamara failed to make a proper connection with a shot, but Finnigan reacted quickly in the six-yard box to put the ball past Esson.
The Inverness players were unhappy with the award of the goal, believing Finnigan to have been in an offside position.
Dougie Imrie (left) and Patrick Cregg challenge for the ball
Mallo saved a free-kick effort from Dougie Imrie before Finnigan saw a tame effort saved by Esson.
Inverness were more enterprising in the second half but came up against a stubborn Falkirk defence marshalled by former Scotland internationals McNamara and Steven Pressley.
Mallo almost presented the Highlanders with a chance to level when he spilled Richie Foran's shot into the path of Rooney, but Tam Scobbie did enough to avert the danger.
Stewart increased Falkirk's lead when he latched on to Michael Higdon's flick-on from a long ball and slammed the ball past Esson.
Imrie volleyed over from close range for the visitors before the injured Pressley had to be replaced by Gerard Aafjes.
Finnigan won a penalty for his side following a challenge by Esson, who was promptly shown a red card by referee Calum Murray.
Pavels Mihadjuks was withdrawn as keeper Michael Fraser was introduced from the Inverness bench and Arfield was successful from the spot.
McCann remained onside to set up Finnigan for a near-post finish in the closing stages.
The win boosts Falkirk's superior goal difference over Inverness, who have played a game more than their victors.
Falkirk manager John Hughes:
"I'm delighted for the boys. Our performance showed that there is a real spirit amongst them.
"They stood up today and really did me proud. We were very hard-working in midfield and the strikers got their goals.
"We looked solid, we won our tackles and they were all working very hard for each other.
"Every one of them to a man gave me everything that they had and we got four goals, so that's pleasing.
"Nothing will get decided on today's performance, I think it will be after the splits into two.
"I felt the supporters got right behind us so we're pleased about that and I'm pleased to keep a clean sheet."
Inverness manager Terry Butcher:
"I can have no complaints about the result because Falkirk deserved to win the game. You've got to hold your hands up and just say it was a very bad day at the office for us.
"We asked the linesman about the first goal. I think Finnigan was in an offside position when the ball was transferred across to the other side.
"But it was one of those ones when he wasn't active and he's then recovered his run and tapped it in.
"We went down to 10 men. I'll have to have a look at that and see if that's worth an appeal. Ryan Esson is adamant that it wasn't a sending off offence.
"It's about how we bounce back now. The players never got to the levels that they had been showing before and we'll have a look at why and make sure that we get back to those levels.
"We have four home games left and, if we can win those four, that'll take us to 40 points, which should see us safe. We've still got it within our own hands."

Big4 Season Ticket Offer

Teaser Paragraph:
Terry Butcher makes personal plea to the fans as the club launches ‘The Big 4’ season ticket offer. Inverness Caledonian Thistle manager Terry Butcher is making a personal plea to fans to show their support in numbers as they enter the final push for a 6th season in the SPL.  With only four home games remaining this season, the club is asking fans to get behind the team as they fight to maintain their position in the top flight of Scottish Football. “The fans have been great and tremendously welcoming since my arrival at the club in January.  With an expected four home games left, St Mirren on the 4th April and Hamilton on the 18th April followed by games after the split.  I am personally calling on all of our fans to come and support us, to create the 12th man in the team.  We have a lot to do and we have made progress but we need everyone working as one and that is why I am making this personal plea to our supporters – Your Club Needs You”
To help make this possible the club are introducing for the first time a four game season ticket which offers a discount of up to 67% against a matchday ticket.  As an added incentive all fans who buy one will get a chance to meet Terry at a ‘Big 4 Season Ticket Holders’ evening on Thursday 2nd April from 6pm – 7pm.
Commercial Manager Darren Mackintosh said we are delighted to launch this fantastic offer and we expect take-up to be huge.  Juniors, who we are so keen to continue attracting as our next generation of fans, can enjoy four games of football for only £3.75 per game.  We hope people will answer the manager’s cry and support us during these four crucial games so we can enjoy a 6th year in the SPL.

Inverness CT 2-1 Kilmarnock - Report

Another three points

Back to league duty after last week's disappointment and it was the best possible start for Caley Thistle.
Richie Foran headed the home side into the lead from a Ross Tokely cross on 19 minutes and two minutes later Ian Black made it 2-0 when his free kick got a bit of help from the wind and ended up in the bottom right corner.
Ross Ford pulled one back in first half injury time but despite sustained pressure from Killie there was to be no equaliser and the three points stayed in Inverness.

Fan overview:
Phew, that was one of the worst games of football I've ever seen. Our second half performance was absolute mince, there was only 1 team in the game. We kept punting long aimless balls up the park and barely strung 2 passes together for long spells. There was no focus, no composure, no imagination. We were lethargic and second to almost every ball, the exact opposite of our performance against Hibs. Rooney and Imrie were completely ineffective, they kept conceding possession too easily and created nothing. I don't think they're going to form an effective partnership.
In the last half hour Butcher and Malpas obviously decided to go all out defence and cling onto our lead rather than go out to kill the game off. At the final whistle we had 8 defenders on the pitch. That must be an ICT record!
We played far better last week and got nothing. I'll take an ugly win over an entertaining defeat any week but if we play this badly again we'll almost always lose.

Inverness CT 0-1 Falkirk - Scottish Cup

Red Card Ends Cup Hopes

Caley Thistle came into this game on the back of a wonderful victory at Ibrox in midweek that had sent todays opponents to the bottom of the league.
With the SPL relegation battle put on hold for a week, today's match not only gave one side the chance to progress to a Hampden semi-final but also the chance to take a psychological advantage going into the 6 pointer in two weeks time .
the early exchanges were fairly even, but things took a dramatic turn on the half hour mark when Lionel Djebi Zadi was ordered off for fouling Carl Finnigan inside the box. Finnigan took the resultant penalty and this proved to be the winner.

From Site:
Initial disappointment at going out of a cup i thought we had a fairly good chance of doing something in this year, further disappointment that we were beaten by a bunch of cheating, low-skilled and very poor Falkirk team who, on the basis of today, we will beat easily in the league.
Overall a fantastic performance in the second half. If we had maybe taken either Kerrs or Duncans chance then we would have gone onto win, especially with Forans chance at the end. In a way it is good that the team who put us out was Falkirk as this game masks the problems they have at the club, and gets the fans off their backs for a few weeks. Its clear to see that they rely far too much on very poor players, like Elvis (i would 100% have Mihadjuks instead of him, diving cheating w*ker that he is) for example. We controlled the game with ten men, and the only shot they had on target was a penalty.
The ref gets a special mention as the worst in the history of mankind. Simply strange decisions, bad decisions and downright awful decisions prevented the game from being a classic. Every 50-50 went to Falkirk. We could and maybe should have had a couple of penalties as well as booking two Falkirk players who should have been sent off. Had we had a proper referee then things could have been different. Still, one more game for those bunch of no-hopers is exactly what they don't need, i look forward to seeing them floundering in the first division, with Elvis down there with them.
tm4tj:
Down to ten men I was still confident we could pull this off or a replay at the least. However, it was not to be despite some frantic scrambles in the Falkirk box the ball just never fell kindly enough for us, combined with Mallo's reflex saves we missed out on a great opportunity to progress. Imrie undid a lot of his good work by choosing the wrong option at the end, shooting wildly over when a pass may have been more productive, he saw the headlines before he shot methinks. One great run evading five scything tackles before being crowded out, but not enough composure with the final ball too often meant it was to no avail.
Great save in the first half by Mallo when Tokely lofted a header towards a seemingly empty net only for the keeper to make up a lot of ground and claw the ball to safety. Tokely McMagics and Foran get pass marks. Grantie gets a minus for constant hoofing, Duncan for cheating, Imrie for not passing, Black for stopping the ball with his face, Lionel for the rugby tackle, he should have left it to Esson, Kerr for not being fit, Esson for having nothing to do, Rooney for not being good enough, and the ref just for sheer inconsistency.
Ah well, out of the cup, but not out of the league yet.

Rangers 0-1 Inverness CT - Report

Off the bottom for now

WE'RE NOT BOTTOM ANY MORE!!! - Since the arrival of Terry Butcher, spirits among everyone at Inverness Caledonian Thistle have been high, but few would have thought that it would have been a victory over Rangers that would finally take us off the bottom of the table.
The Caley Jags set out to make things difficult for Rangers and everyone was playing their part....especially the back 5, with Esson making some vital saves and the defensive line executing some important last minute tackles.  They were reward for the "never say die" attitude when they forced Weir to make an error and foul Proctor....conceding a penalty on 90 minutes.  Black made no mistake in sticking it away.
Inverness seem to be back to their old selves, full of belief and prepared to take the game to anyone and everyone.

Caley Stan was walking on air:
From Ibrox to Brechins, Govan to Queen Street to Waverley, up the bridges and into the Royal Oak with my chest pumped out, ICT badge shining in everyone's eyes, folk either asked me what the score was or hugged me.
When i finally made it to the Oak an Irishman kissed me and bought me a pint of Guiness and a large dram.
Honestly, we didn't create a chance in the whole game. We defended brilliantly, as we have done ever since Butcher took charge. Two back fours and a front two who's primary role is to defend. It worked. It was pretty spawny but it worked and we're off the bottom.
Eveybody that played and sang tonight deserve praise but i have to give special mention to Ryan Esson, the back 4 and Russell Duncan for immense defending.
Ian Black, cool as you like shot himself into legendary status if he didn't have it already.
We all danced home. Thank-you Blackie. Thank you Caley. Thank you all ICT players and fans.

Inverness CT 1-2 Motherwell - Report

Well Setback

Terry Butcher came into this game with an undefeated record. His impressive run since coming to the club is 2 wins, 2 draws, 5 goals scored and only 1 against. We all knew the whole undefeated thing is a bubble and it had to burst sometime, but thanks to Terry Butcher, the fans and the players can now throw around an old phrase... WE BELIEVE ! or borrow a new phrase from another inspirational leader when asked about avoiding relegation YES WE CAN !
John Sutton opened the scoring for Motherwell in 26 minutes and the pre-Butcher Caley Jags might have crumbled in these circumstances... but not any more !!! Captain Grant Munro led the fightback and equalised in 39 minutes and even when Cillian Sheridan scored what proved to be the winner in 53 minutes, the Caley Jags never gave up. Its Butcher's first loss, but once again, the Caley Jags put up a fight and were unlucky not to take something from this game.

Overview from site:
Can't believe we took nothing from that game. It might just be me, but I don't see where Motherwell were much better than us in the first half. We gave away possession too cheaply, thanks to Granty hoofing the ball continuously, although when called upon to do exactly that, he fresh airs the ball. We lost because we gifted two goals to Motherwell, that's the bottom line. We were better than them and should have cantered through this game, but gifting two comedy goals in the same match is beyond belief. Rooney could have won the game for us, but missed two glorious opportunities that came his way late on. We ran Well ragged in the second half but the final ball/shot eluded us. We scored an offside goal, well the linesman flagged it anyway and had one or two melees in the Well box, but nothing doing.
What's with the Tokely bashing..............he was one of our better players, along with Foran and Imrie who again worked his socks off, but the final ball was given away too often.
Esson lost confidence after his howler and Grant punted the ball everywhere. Nothing Butcher can do about schoolboy errors, however, I will console myself in the knowledge that we are a better side than smash and grab Motherwell.

Inverness CT 2-0 Hibernian - Report

2nd Home Win

Terry Butcher didn't take long to get Inverness Caledonian Thistle back to their old ways and performing again, and this continued against Hibs.
It wasn't the prettiest game of football you're ever likely to witness, but solid graft from the Caley Jags saw them go a goal up thanks to Proctor on 14 minutes, with Foran securing the points and our first league home victory since September.
More importantly, the result brought Inverness CT to within a point of Falkirk and it's game on as we head into the remainder of the season and the fight for survival.

David Proctor was on target as Inverness secured maximum points against Hibs at the Caledonian Stadium.
The hosts took the lead in 14 minutes when Proctor fired home after good work by Dougie Imrie and Eric Odhiambo.
Jonatan Johansson spurned a great Hibs chance when he sent his shot wide after springing the offside trap.
Inverness doubled their lead through Richie Foran from close-range after Imrie's effort was parried by Hibs goalkeeper Gregorz Szamotulski.
The hosts were looking for only their second home league win of the season and Proctor's strike was reward for their bright start.
Hibs pushed on though and after 21 minutes Johansson beat the offside trap but, with just Ryan Esson to beat, he slid a low shot wide from the edge of the box.
Derek Riordan switched from the left to the right flank and his teasing cross was plucked out of the air by Esson.
Hibs toiled to create anything of note on a frustrating afternoon for the Edinburgh side.
In the closing moments of the first half, Foran saw an effort dip over the bar as he connected with Ross Tokely's cross.
The Highlanders got their second goal after 64 minutes when Foran pounced to fire home after Imrie's drive was not properly cleared by the Hibs defence.
In the closing moments, substitute Adam Rooney bore down on goal but he was unable to score a third for the hosts.
Victory saw Inverness close the gap on 11th-placed Falkirk to a single point as the side's resurgence under new manager Terry Butcher continues.
Inverness CT manager Terry Butcher:
"It was a great three points, just what we needed. "We have an excellent back four, who are - excuse the phrase - ugly at the right times." "We have shown that we have desire and belief and that's essential. "Three of our next four games are at home and we hope that we can make home advantage pay."
