Inverness CT 2-1 St Mirren - SPL

ICT 2-1 ST MIRREN Goals from Graham Bayne in 5 minutes and Dennis Wyness in the 21st minute were enough to win this game for Caley Thistle. Kirk Broadfoot scored for the Buddies in 77 minutes and Mark Brown made a spectacular save near the end to make sure all three points stay in Inverness. Club Historian Ian Broadfoot reports from the game.  1st January 2007 Tulloch Caledonian Stadium, Inverness  INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE FC  2 (Bayne 5, Wyness 21)  Team: Brown, Tokely, Dods, Munro, Hastings, Wilson (McCaffrey 88), Duncan (Morgan 84), McBain, Rankin,  Bayne, Wyness Subs – McAllister, Sutherland, Soane, Dargo & Fraser
ST MIRREN  1 (Broadfoot 77)  Team: Bullock, McGowne, Potter (Gemmill 87), Broadfoot, Zanten, Reid (McCay 65), Corcoran, Brittain, Brady, McKenna (McGinn 46), Sutton Subs: Docherty, Maxwell, Millen & Smith
Referee  Alan Freeland  Attendance  4246  Man of the Match  Graham Bayne (ICT)     A good start to 2007 for Caley Thistle, a well-earned three points and revenge for the defeat by St Mirren on the opening day of the season.   By half-time they could have been more than two up and were put under pressure when Saints improved after the break. The visitors eventually pulled one back through Kirk Broadfoot and there was a nervous finish for the home fans.   Heavy rain throughout the country threatened sporting fixtures but Inverness was spared the worst of it and all was well. Ian Black dropped out of the home side through suspension and Russell Duncan came in. Barry Wilson returned and Alan Morgan reverted to the bench. St Mirren were without Simon Lappin and Hugh Murray.   Bullock was under pressure from the start and in just two minutes Graham Bayne sent an angled ball across goal but wide of the mark. The first goal came in five minutes when Bayne passed to Roy McBain, moved to the centre and was there to expertly head home McBain’s cross from the right. This was just what ICT needed and they took control of the game.   Saints however nearly pulled one back in nine minutes when Mark Brown dived to push a low ball from David McKenna over for a corner. Dennis Wyness scored his first SPL goal of the season in 21 minutes and it was a great strike. McBain powered goalwards then found Richard Hastings on the left - the defender’s cross reached Wyness in the box, he chested it down then hammered it into the net giving Bullock no chance.   A Wilson free kick in 29 minutes troubled the defence as it bounced towards goal but Bullock pushed it for a corner. John Rankin had a chance in 33 minutes from his favourite position 25 yards out but it was on his right foot and he sliced it wide. A Wilson corner in 44 minutes reached Darren Dods at the back of the box but he was off-balance and failed to connect.   Half Time: 2-0   Just after the break Bayne went down just inside the St Mirren box but nothing was given. Kirk Broadfoot tested Brown in 52 minutes from wide left but the ‘keeper held it. Bullock saved from Rankin in 55 minutes then pushed the ball for a corner as Wilson closed in for the rebound.   Bullock saved well from Bayne in 62 minutes then Wyness hit over the bar in 67 minutes. Saints began to gain confidence and they scored in 76 minutes when Broadfoot ran in to head home Richard Brittain’s corner from the left.   Garry Brady nearly managed an equaliser three minutes later but Brown dived to his left to push it away. Mark Corcoran then hit the bar from an angle on the right. With four minutes left Saints were awarded a free kick 19 yards out for hand ball amidst claims that it had been in the box. The kick came to nothing but the ICT fans feared the worst as Saints continued to press.   There was an almighty scramble in the home box in the closing minute but Alan Morgan finally booted clear and it hit off a St Mirren player for a goal kick. That was enough to settle things down and the whistle went.   Full Time: 2-1   In the topsy-turvy world at the foot of the SPL this win pushed ICT back up to eighth on 27 points. Dunfermline remain rooted at the foot on 14 points.

Falkirk 3-1 Inverness CT - SPL

A 12 minute hat-trick from Anthony Stokes just before half-time and two yellow cards for Ian Black for kicking the ball away after the half-time whistle had gone, sum up this match. It was small consolation that John Rankin scored another cracker right at the death. Official Club Historian Ian Broadfoot reports from the last match of 2006 which took place at the Falkirk Stadium.
FALKIRK 3-1 ICT
30th December 2006 Falkirk Stadium, Falkirk  FALKIRK  3 (Stokes 33,37,45) Team: Lambers, Ross, Dodd, Uras, Barr, Milne (Twaddle 65), Cregg, Lima (Thomson 72), O'Donnell, Latapy (Stewart 78), Stokes
Subs: McManus, Craig, Scobbie & Higgins
INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE  1 (Rankin 90) Brown, Tokely, Dods, Munro, Hastings, Rankin, Black, McBain, Morgan (Duncan 70), Wyness (McAllister 78), Bayne (McSwegan 76) Subs: McCaffrey, Wilson, Sutherland & Fraser
Referee  Mike Tumilty  Attendance  4516  Man of the Match  Anthony Stokes (Falkirk)   A disappointing end to 2006 for Caley Thistle and what a difference three days can make in football. The victory over Rangers will never be forgotten but the glow was dimmed somewhat by this defeat at the hands of Falkirk.
This was the Anthony Stokes show as the on-loan Arsenal youngster scored yet another hat-trick in a 13 minute spell.
The visitors were without the rested Barry Wilson and Alan Morgan came in for his first league start of the season. Goalkeeper Mark Brown made his 200th appearance in just five seasons. Falkirk were without striker Alan Gow due to flu and defender Cedric Uras made his debut.
Today was a massive disappointment after Wednesday night.
The visitors started well and in the fourth minute an Ian Black 25 yard free kick curled just wide. Darren Dods did well to track back and challenge Stokes in 20 minutes - the teenager did manage a shot but he was off balance and the ball went across the face of the goal.
In 28 minutes Grant Munro took the ball off Stokes in a dangerous position after a good Falkirk move involving Russell Latapy. On the half hour mark home ‘keeper Jeroen Lambers tipped over a 30 yard free kick from Morgan.
Stokes took over after that and scored his first in 33 minutes. Kenny Milne found Latapy and he sent a neat through pass which set Stokes up on a straight run to goal. He hit it past Brown then repeated the finish from a tight angle four minutes later after a one-two with Vito Lima. As half time approached Stokes completed his hat trick from close range after a cutback from Milne.
Half Time 3-0
After the half-time whistle Caley Thistle’s Ian Black incurred the wrath of the referee by kicking a ball away twice and receiving two yellow cards in succession. The first was clearly the match ball but some claim the second was a club warm-up ball. No matter the rights and wrongs of the dismissal it left the visitors to face the second half three goals and a man down.
The visitors battled on in the second half but they could have lost a fourth in 68 minutes when Darren Barr hit the bar from 20 yards. Brown parried a Lima shot from 12 yards in 70 minutes when another goal was a strong possibility. There was never going to be a realistic way back but in the last minute John Rankin restored some pride when he took a Gary McSwegan pass and sent a 20 yard dipping shot over the ‘keeper. This repeat of Rankin’s feat on Wednesday was merely a consolation and the points were left behind in Falkirk.
Full Time: 3-1
Results elsewhere led to a drop to tenth.

Falkirk V ICT - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
After a superb but unexpected win against Rangers in midweek, Caley Thistle hope to end the year on a high by taking all three points at Falkirk. It wont be easy as the sides are evenly matched but if Latapy and Stokes (playing his last game for Falkirk ?) have a good game then Mark Brown may have a lot busier time in this game than he did against Rangers. Andrew Fraser provides the preview. DETAILS Falkirk v Inverness CT Falkirk Stadium Saturday 30th December at 3pm Referee: Mike Tumilty Others: Gordon Middleton, Chris Young (Assistants), Brian Winter (4th official). Tickets: Tickets must be purchased before entering the ground. The away ticket office at Falkirk will be open at 2pm. TV-info: LIVE commentary on BBC Radio Scotland. FIXTURES Saturday 30th December Dundee Utd v Aberdeen Falkirk v Inverness CT Hibernian v Dunfermline Kilmarnock v Hearts Motherwell v Celtic (Setanta, 12:30pm) Rangers v St Mirren SPL RECENT RESULTS Tuesday 26th December Aberdeen 3-1 Kilmarnock Celtic 2-2 Dundee Utd Dunfermline 0-2 Motherwell Hearts 3-2 Hibernian St Mirren 1-0 Falkirk Wednesday 27th December Inverness CT 2-1 Rangers Rangers took the long journey north to the Highlands in order to gain revenge on a cold windy night. Inverness had already beaten the Gers this season 1-0 AT Ibrox thanks to a Graham Bayne goal. This match was live on TV which gave Inverness an added incentive to play well. The Highlanders made one change from the game with Dunfermline, with Bayne replacing McAllister. Rangers too made one change with Prso dropping out due to injury and being replaced by the so far unimpressive Sebo. After tonight, he would remain the unimpressive Sebo. Both teams created chances but Rangers took the lead after Barry Ferguson went down easily under the challenge of McBain and Nacho Novo stepped up confidently and sent the keeper the wrong way. Rankin produced a save from McGregor minutes later after fantastic play down the wing by Ross Tokely and it wasn’t long before Inverness had equalised. After a succession of 4 corners Rangers didn’t clear their lines and Dods was produced the perfect chance to score and McGregor saved it but Dods reacted quickest and thumped the ball into the roof of the net. Game on now, as the goal machine scores again. Into the 2nd half and it was Inverness that produced the best chances. Mark Brown hardly a save to make in this half, but whenever called upon, he did it well. McGregor saved well from shots by Wyness, Black and Rankin and the game looked to be heading for a draw with McGregor getting man of the match until the 91st minute that is. Rankin picked the ball up on the half way line took the ball to around 25 yards out and hit a fantastic dipping ball over McGregor and into the back of the net. This obviously gave Rankin the man of the match award. A goal fitting to win any game, that sent Christie and everyone associated with the club jumping for joy. It was great to see a £65k signing from Ross County play really well against a £1.8 million signing they call Sebo who has yet to prove he is worth even £10k. It was 9 games without a win for Inverness CT before this game, lets just hope that this result gives the players the confidence to go 9 games unbeaten now!! PAST MEETINGS The teams have played a total of 26 times (25 League, 1 Cup) with 83 goals (40 Inverness CT, 43 Falkirk) between them. Inverness CT: 8 wins (8 League, 0 Cup) Draws: 6 (6 League, 0 Cup) Falkirk: 12 wins (11 League, 1 Cup) FACTS BETWEEN THE TEAMS • There have been 20 1st Division games and 5 SPL games between the teams. • There has only been 1 cup game between the teams, which took place earlier this season in Inverness with Falkirk winning 1-0.. • The teams average 3.2 goals a game in the fixtures between these two teams. • The biggest win in the fixture was when Inverness CT beat the Bairns 4-1 at the Falkirk Stadium on the 21/01/2006. Goals from Wilson, Wyness, Dargo and Tokely gave Caley Thistle a comfortable victory. Ireland scored a consolation for Falkirk. • The last meeting between the team finished 3-2 to Inverness CT. After being 2-0 down thanks to goals from Anthony Stokes, Inverness produced a sizzling fight back with goals from Dargo and Rankin 2. Including a 40 yard free kick from the ex-Ross County man. PLAYERS TO WATCH John Rankin (Inverness CT): Some people thought that paying £65,000 for Rankin was a bit too much. Now some papers are calling it the best steal of the season. Rankin has taken his time adapting to life in the SPL but after his wonder strike against Rangers, his confidence will only improve. Christie has urged him to make more use of the ball and he certainly deserved his goal on Wednesday after forcing McGregor into a number of stunning saves throughout the match. His time at Manchester United has brought him on leaps and bounds and after finding out today that Rangers had him as a youngster but failed to hold onto him only makes Wednesday’s goal sweeter. A player to watch in the weeks to come, I definitely see him scoring more goals and making a vital contribution to the team in terms of his use of the ball. Anthony Stokes (Falkirk): This could end up being Anthony Stokes last game for Falkirk on Saturday. His loan spell runs out after the game and there has been no word yet as to whether Arsenal want him back at the moment or not. A few clubs may even make bids for him during the transfer window, which could include Celtic. But his 13 goals this season have helped Falkirk greatly this season. Although he hasn’t scored since he got sent off against Motherwell on the 25th of November he is a player with a bright future ahead of him that can cause any teams problems. ICT V Rangers - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
With the streak of winless games stretching each week, Rangers are not the best side to face when you need to put it to an end especially when Celtic could only draw on Boxing Day. Andrew Fraser previews the game .... DETAILS

Inverness CT: 1 wins (1 League, 0 Cup) Draws: 3 (3 League, 0 Cup) Rangers: 4 wins (3 League, 1 Cup) A GAME TO REMEMBER For this weeks game to remember we take you back to one of the four SPL encounters that have taken place at Ibrox. It was last seasons meeting at this venue that took place on the 29th October 2005. Inverness CT had already lost 1-0 and drawn 1-1 before at Ibrox so were looking for more points of Glasgow Rangers. Rangers started the better with Ricksen hitting the crossbar but it was a surprised Inverness CT that took the lead thanks to a wonder goal. Craig Dargo ran onto a Mark Brown goal kick and he hit a spectacular dipping shot that beat Waterreus. They could have been 2 up had Morgan’s shot from the edge of the area gone on target. Inverness were 1-0 up at half time and the Highlanders loved every minute of it, especially the fans who sang right through the interval. Rangers immediately bombarded the Caley goal and got the equaliser through Steve Thompson on the 54th minute. However, the Inverness defence held firm throughout the rest of the match even though being reduced to 10 men due to Bayne getting sent off. Even though giving away the lead, Inverness CT were still delighted with a point at Ibrox and heaped more pressure on McLeish. The attendance was 47687. The teams were as follows: INVERNESS CT: Brown, Tokely, Dods, Munro, Hastings, Duncan, Black, Proctor, Morgan, Bayne, Dargo. Subs- Wyness (for Dargo), Fraser, McCaffrey, Parratt, Hart, Juanjo. RANGERS: Waterreus, Hutton, Malcolm, Andrews, Bernard, Ferguson, Ricksen, Hemdani, Burke, Prso, Lovenkrands. Subs- Thompson (for Burke), Klos, Rae, Murray, Namouchi, Smith, McCormack. The referee was Iain Brines and there were 7 bookings and 1 sending off on the day. Hemdani, Malcolm and Ricksen all got cautioned for Rangers and Bayne, Black, Tokely and Dargo all got cautioned for Inverness with Bayne later getting sent off. Only one of the Inverness players who started the match has left the club, David Proctor going to Dundee Utd. FACTS BETWEEN THE TEAMS • All League meetings between the teams have taken place in the SPL. • Inverness CT had never won against Rangers, until the last meeting at Ibrox. • This will be Paul Le Guen’s first taste of playing the Highlanders in Inverness. • Charlie Christie’s first official game since taking over the manager’s job permanently was at home to Rangers, 11 months ago. • The last time these two came face to face Inverness CT won remarkably down in Glasgow in Govan. A Graham Bayne goal was enough to dent Rangers title hopes further and silence 47000 hopefuls. • Rangers have never failed to win in Inverness!!! PLAYERS TO WATCH Gary McSwegan (Inverness CT): Inverness currently lack a goal scorer, and by the sounds of it on Saturday, Rory McAllister isn’t the missing link at the moment. The team missed Craig Dargo on Saturday and hopefully he will be fit for tonight’s match but if not, the team may miss him. With Wyness still to find the net this season and Bayne struggling for consistency, McSwegan may be the only hope we have. He may be old, but he has experience (including playing for Rangers) and could be the answer to our goal scoring problems. I honestly don’t think Gary would start the game tonight but possibly if he gets a substitute appearance he may just find his first goal for the club!! Libor Sionko (Rangers): The creative midfielder is turning into one of the very few decent signings Paul Le Guen has made. He has managed to turn in some decent performances lately and is hoping to continue in the vital games ahead. He has 3 goals to his name, all in the SPL with the latest in the game last Saturday against Aberdeen at Pittodrie. Sionko did not play in the match earlier in the season between these two teams. FUTURE FIXTURES 31st Mar 2007 at Ibrox Stadium NOTE TO ALL FANS I hope everyone reading this preview had a very Merry Christmas. I wish everyone a happy new year no matter who you support. 2007= a year that brings many victories for Inverness CT. Squad: Mark Brown, Jonathon Smith, Michael Fraser, Darren Dods, Stuart Soane, Ross Tokely, Guy Kerr, Richard Hastings, Stuart McCaffrey, Stuart Golabek, Grant Munro, John Rankin, Ian Black, Roy McBain, Zander Sutherland, Alan Morgan, Barry Wilson, Russell Duncan, Craig Dargo, Gary McSwegan, Rory McAllister, Dennis Wyness, Graham Bayne Injured: Liam Keogh Richie Hart Suspended: Nobody.

Inverness CT 2-1 Rangers - SPL

Darren Dods scored just before half time to level an earlier penalty from Rangers (Novo) but it was John Rankin who scored an injury time winner to beat the Gers and end Caley Thistle's 9 game run without a win. Club Historian Ian Broadfoot reports from Tulloch Caledonian Stadium.
ICT 2-1 RANGERS
27th December 2006 Tulloch Caledonian Stadium, Inverness  INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE FC  2 (Dods 41, Rankin 90) Team: Brown, Tokely, Dods, Munro, Hastings, Wilson (Morgan 78), Rankin, Black, McBain, Dargo, Bayne, Wyness Subs: McAllister, Sutherland, McSwegan, Duncan, McCaffrey & Fraser
RANGERS  1 Novo (21 pen) Team: McGregor, Hutton, Svensson, Papac, Hemdani, Sionko (Burke 72), Ferguson, Clement, Adam, Novo (Lennon 83), Sebo Subs: Stanger, N'Diaye, Murray, Rae & Klos
Referee Craig Thomson  Attendance 7522   Man of the Match Dennis Wyness (ICT)    A dramatic injury-time goal from John Rankin earned all three points for Caley Thistle, continued their 100% league record against Rangers this season and gave them a tremendous confidence boost after a disappointing run.   Pre-match Rangers manager Paul Le Guen made no secret of his desire to avenge the October result at Ibrox but he was to be bitterly disappointed. His side was without the injured Dado Prso and Caley Thistle also had Craig Dargo sidelined. Graham Bayne partnered Dennis Wyness up front and they worked their socks off for the home cause.  Otherwise the home side was unchanged.   A new record crowd of 7522 settled down to watch the action – a vocal away support expecting to see their side’s revival continue and a home crowd hoping for that elusive win. Caley Thistle started at pace and earned a corner in the second minute. Barry Wilson’s kick came off a defender and hand ball was claimed to no avail.   An excellent Wyness flick in four minutes set up a John Rankin shot in the Rangers box but he hit first time over the bar. The first real chance for Rangers came in eleven minutes when Mark Brown had to be alert to beat the ball away from the feet of Nacho Novo. Four minutes later Brown held a low shot from Charlie Adam.   The game took a turn Rangers way in 21 minutes when Barry Ferguson went down alongside Roy McBain in the home box. TV pictures confirmed minimum contact but it was a penalty and Novo sent Brown the wrong way for 1-0.   The home side continued to hold their own in defence and to create chances at the other end. In 26 minutes Ross Tokely and Roy McBain combined to set up Wilson but McGregor saved his low shot.   With four minutes of the first half left Tokely found Darren Dods just inside the Rangers box and McGregor parried the captain’s shot – it fell neatly back to Dods and he hit it high into the net for a very welcome equaliser.   Half Time: 1-1   This set up a lively second half with Allan McGregor the busier ‘keeper. In 65 minutes Wilson sent a ball across goal from the right which had McGregor scrambling - it reached Rankin beyond the far post but his effort from an acute angle was not quite on target.   Two minutes later Grant Munro did well to rob Filip Sebo as he poised to shoot. McGregor saved an excellent Ian Black angled shot in 69 minutes then seconds later he did the same from Wyness before stopping Graham Bayne’s headed follow-up. Brown took the ball off Sebo’s feet in 76 minutes then a minute later he safely took a Ferguson rising free kick.   Ten minutes from time Black sent a long ball to Bayne down the right and McGregor raced out of his goal to clear for a throw-in. Chris Burke had come on as a substitute for Rangers in 72 minutes and he was proving a handful. His speed down the right wing was creating danger but the home defence stuck to its task well. Burke had a chance in 84 minutes but he hit over the bar.   With two minutes left, Wyness flicked the ball to Rankin close to the Rangers goal but his low shot was held by McGregor. Into added time and a draw looked inevitable. The away fans started to head for their buses but were stopped in their tracks when Rankin struck. A neat pass from substitute Alan Morgan sent Rankin off from the halfway line towards McGregor’s goal. From 25 yards out he sent a high ball goalwards – the ‘keeper (and most of the crowd) thought it was going to clear the bar but it dipped and nestled in the net.   There was still time for one last Rangers attack through Alan Hutton but Munro cleared the ball and the whistle went.   Full Time: 2-1   A fine way to end a long run without a victory. Boxing Day results elsewhere had sent ICT down to eleventh but these three points propelled them up to eighth.
