ICT V Hibernian - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Mike Fraser will make only his third start for the club in this match after Mark Brown's six figure transfer to Celtic. With fans already giving him a rousing endorsement based on what they have seen him do in reserve games and on the few occasions he has taken the park for the first team, this is his chance to make the #1 jersey his own. Hibs are currently playing well so it will be a tough test for him. Andrew Fraser provides the match preview. Inverness CT v Hibernian

It took place at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium in the SPL on the 02/03/2005. This was Inverness’ only second game in Inverness in the SPL after ground sharing with Aberdeen for the first half of the season. Inverness out played Hibs for the whole game and deserved their 3-0 victory. Goals came from Juanjo, Brewster and Wilson. The attendance was 4443. The teams were as follows: INVERNESS CT: Brown, Tokely, Munro, Dods, Golabek, Wilson, Hart, Duncan, McBain, Brewster, Juanjo. Subs- Proctor (for Hart), Bayne (for Brewster), Fatai (for Juanjo), Fraser, McCaffrey, Hastings, Prunty.
HIBERNIAN: Simon Brown, Whittaker, Caldwell, Smith, Murphy, Orman, Antonio Murray, Ian Murray, Scott Brown, O’Connor, Riordan. Subs- Shiels (for Orman), McDonald (for A.Murray), Sproule (for I.Murray), Brown, McCluskey, Morrow, Konte. The referee was John Underhill and there were three bookings on the day all for Hibernian: Antonio Murray, Murphy and Ian Murray. Eight of the Inverness players who started the match still play for the club. Only Craig Brewster, Juanjo and Mark Brown have left. FACTS BETWEEN THE TEAMS • All League meetings between the teams have taken place in the SPL. There have been no cup ties between the teams. • Inverness have won four out of the last six meetings. In the four wins, Hibernian had only scored once. • Barry Wilson is the top scorer in this fixture with 4 goals. • Hibernian and Inverness CT are both currently unbeaten in 2007. TOP SCORERS 4 goals: Barry Wilson (ICT) 3 goals: Derek Riordan (Hibs) 2 goals: Juanjo (ICT), Fletcher (Hibs) 1 goal: Brewster (ICT), Proctor (ICT), Wyness (ICT), Dargo (ICT), Dods (ICT), Beuzilin (Hibs), Killen (Hibs). PLAYERS TO WATCH
Michael Fraser (ICT): The Caley Thistle young goalkeeper has waited years for this moment, to see a man he has learned so much from leave the club. Fraser has waited patiently for this moment and now he has the chance to make the no.1 place his own. This is after Mark Brown’s shock move to Celtic just a few days ago. Fraser has started only 2 games for Inverness CT, and has come on as a sub 2 times as well. From what we have seen, he looks like he could have the potential to do well in the SPL consistently; however Christie will be looking to give him some competition for the goalkeeper’s jersey. I have every belief in Michael though to do well as Caley Thistle’s number 1. Good luck!
Benjelloun (Hibernian): The Hibernian midfielder made a vital contribution on Thursday night to help the Hibees progress to the 4th round of the Scottish Cup. He came on as a sub and scored 2 goals to secure his team victory. This season, Benjelloun has scored 7 goals: 3 in the SPL, 2 in the League Cup and his latest 2 in the Scottish Cup. Will probably start on Sunday after his performance on Thursday.FUTURE FIXTURES None arranged. Squad: Jonathon Smith, Michael Fraser, Darren Dods, Stuart Soane, Ross Tokely, Guy Kerr, Richard Hastings, Stuart McCaffrey, Stuart Golabek, Grant Munro, John Rankin, Ian Black, Roy McBain, Zander Sutherland, Alan Morgan, Liam Keogh, Richie Hart, Barry Wilson, Russell Duncan, Markus Paatelainen, Craig Dargo, Gary McSwegan, Rory McAllister, Dennis Wyness, Graham Bayne Injured: Nobody. Marks a Bhoy

Teaser Paragraph:
As widely speculated, Mark Brown will become a Celtic player today (Thursday 18th January).
The former Rangers, Motherwell and now Caley Thistle stopper who would have been out of contract at the end of the season was mulling over a new ICT deal and was also attracting attention from other SPL teams such as Falkirk but according to ICTFC.CO.UK when the offer came in from Celtic, he "jumped at the chance to go to Celtic Park and perhaps to be involved in the Champions League".
Brown has agreed a contract with the league leaders and according to the official website, Celtic will pay a six figure sum to secure his services immediately.
{josquote}Michael did very well when he replaced Mark at Celtic in November and we have every confidence in his ability and temperament. He will certainly get his chance against Hibs on Sunday and it's up to him to show he deserves to keep the jersey. Charlie Christie on the official website {/josquote}Mark signed for Caley Thistle in August 2002 after being one of several players released by Motherwell when they went into administration. Such was his impact in the first team that he made his debut immediately after signing and then started 120 consecutive games.
Although injured in a couple of games where Mike Fraser had to come on as a sub, Mark didnt miss starting a game until Mike was given the opportunity to start the last home game of the 2005/06 season against Falkirk. In his 170 appearances for Caley Thistle, Mark has had 54 clean sheets.
Although disappointed he has chosen to leave ICT, he has been a great servant to the club and we wish him all the best at Celtic. However, more importantly we now take this opportunity to throw our support behind Michael Fraser who has the chance to make the #1 jersey all his own.
Mike has consistently been regarded as a good keeper and many have said he would already have been a first team regular if he were elsewhere or had Mark not been so consistent. We are confident that the team is still in 'safe hands'

Aberdeen 1-1 Inverness CT - SPL

This match was Caley Thistle's 100th SPL game and a first ever victory over the Dons was the hope. John Rankin appeared to have achieved this when he scored in the 86th minute but Steve Lovell equalised in the 3rd minute of injury time to salvage a point for the Dons.
ABERDEEN 1-1 ICT
13th January 2007  Pittodrie Stadium, Aberdeen  ABERDEEN  1 (Lovell 90)  Team: Langfield, Hart, Anderson, Foster, Nicolson, Severin, Clark, Brewster (Considine 44), Maguire (Dempsey 46), Miller (Lovell 79), Mackie Subs: , Touzani, Donald, Smith, Soutar
INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE  1 (Rankin 86)  Team: Brown, Tokely, Dods, Munro, Hastings, Wilson (McCaffrey 89), Duncan, Rankin, McBain, Wyness (Dargo 80), Bayne  Subs: Black, Morgan, Soane, McAllister & Fraser
Referee  Mike McCurry  Attendance  10300  Man of the Match   As the 100th SPL match played by Caley Thistle this was a milestone, but a second was just missed as once more Aberdeen’s scalp proved elusive.
For the third time this season the teams drew 1-1 and, as in November, both goals were late on with Stevie Lovell saving the Dons in the last minute. This time the equaliser was well into added time after John Rankin had made it 1-0 with four minutes of normal time left – this was the club’s 777th league goal and the 118th in the SPL.
Richard Hastings was fit again so it was back to ICT’s familiar 4-4-2 formation and Craig Dargo moved to the bench. Aberdeen were missing the suspended Zander Diamond but Craig Brewster made his first start against his former club. It was to be a dismal afternoon for Brewster as he left the field with a dislocated shoulder just before half time and will be out for an extended period.
Wild weather throughout Scotland caused a number of postponements but this game went ahead despite a gale-force wind. Barry Nicholson shot over in 11 minutes for Aberdeen then Dennis Wyness had the first chance for ICT in 16 minutes when he hit from 25 yards but Jamie Langfield saved with little trouble.
Wyness headed over seven minutes later then Graham Bayne shot over. In 26 minutes Barry Wilson appeared to be brought down by Langfield after a mix up between the ‘keeper and Michael Hart but the referee waved play on despite strong protests from the visitors. Just before half time a Wilson free kick curled past the wall and over the bar. Brewster then sustained his shoulder injury and had to head for hospital.
Half Time: 0-0
At the interval he was replaced by Andrew Considine and Gary Dempsey also replaced Christopher Maguire.  Aberdeen were looking for a penalty when Lee Miller went down in the box but once more Mike McCurry made no award. Rankin curled a long range shot wide then in 66 minutes Bayne hit over following a Rankin corner.
Bayne was the provider in 86 minutes when he stroked the ball into the path of Rankin and he hit past Langfield from 18 yards to make it 1-0. This was no more than the visitors deserved but it was not enough. With nearly three minutes of added time on the clock, substitute Lovell came to the Dons rescue when he lobbed over Mark Brown to make it 1-1. This was a bitter blow for Caley Thistle who richly deserved all three points.
Full Time: 1-1
There was no time for a comeback as the whistle went before the match could even restart. Caley Thistle remain eighth on 28 points and Aberdeen stay third on 39.

Aberdeen V ICT - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Caley Thistle go to Pittodrie still chasing that all elusive first league win against Aberdeen.  Former manager Craig Brewster is sure to make an appearance on the pitch at some point, if not from the start.  Will Charlie Christie opt for the 3-4-3 he has been going on about, or has he just been messing with their heads.  Andrew Fraser provides the preview ahead of tomorrows action? DETAILS
Aberdeen v Inverness CT Sat 13th Jan at 3pm Pittodrie Stadium
FIXTURES Saturday 13th November Aberdeen v Inverness CT Falkirk v Dunfermline Rangers v Dundee Utd St Mirren v Motherwell Sunday 14th November: Hearts v Celtic (Setanta, 2pm) Monday 15th November: Kilmarnock v Hibernian (Setanta, 7:45pm) SPL TEAMS IN THE 3RD ROUND OF THE SCOTTISH CUP
So, how did the SPL teams fair in the always exciting 3rd round of the Tennents Scottish Cup? Well, 6 teams progressed, and 2 got knocked with another 2 SPL teams to join them after replays are played. Let’s name and shame the winners and losers: Celtic managed to safely progress at the expense of third division Dumbarton. The SPL champions won 4-0 with no worries as they were 2 up after only 10 mins. Hearts also went through into the next round by the same score line against second division Stranraer. A Velicka hat trick stole the show for the Jambos. Motherwell came through a potential cup upset in a Lanarkshire derby with Airdrie United. The match finished 1-0 although Airdrie did create enough chances to win the match had they taken them. Falkirk also reached the next round at the expense of a lower league team, Berwick Rangers. Alan Gow featured for Falkirk, meaning that if he moves on in this transfer window, he will not be able to play in the Scottish Cup. Inverness CT ran out comfortable winners in what was also named a potential cup shock. The Highlanders taught the second division high flyers a football lesson by demolishing Stirling Albion 6-1. Five different goal scorers for Inverness CT definitely pleased the manager, and some of the goals were top notch. Dunfermline surprisingly progressed at the expense of Rangers in Iain Durrant’s sole game in charge. Dunfermline were at one point 3-0 up. The other shock of the round was when Kilmarnock were dumped out of the cup by Morton after leading by a goal. They eventually lost 3-1 and deservedly so by the sounds of it. Aberdeen and Hibs will have to replay after a 2-2 draw on Wednesday night and St Mirren and Dundee Utd will face each other next week for the right to play Inverness CT. PAST MEETINGS The teams have played a total of 12 times (8 League, 4 Cup) with 21 goals (6 Inverness CT, 15 Aberdeen) between them. Inverness CT: 0 wins (0 League, 0 Cup) Draws: 6 (5 League, 1 Cup) Aberdeen: 6 wins (3 League, 3 Cup) SOME PREVIOUS MEETINGS
08/08/1998 (League Cup 2nd Round) INVERNESS CT 0-3 Aberdeen: In the first game between the sides it was a Billy Dodds hat-trick that gave the top-flight side the win. Inverness CT was a 2nd Division side at the time.
20/02/2000 (Scottish Cup 4th Round) INVERNESS CT 1-1 Aberdeen: After the excellent achievements of beating Celtic at Parkhead in the previous round, the gift was a home-tie against Aberdeen which was screened live by Sky-Sports. Bobby Mann’s header looked as if it would have taken the Caley Jags through but Cato Gunviet scored with 10 minutes remaining meaning a replay was to be played. Both scorers got yellow cards during the match. Aberdeen won the replay 1-0.
16/10/2004 (SPL) INVERNESS CT 1-3 Aberdeen (Pittodrie): With all the media hype about Aberdeen playing away at Pittodrie was a joke before this game. Inverness were paying Aberdeen £30,000 for the day plus Aberdeen didn’t need to travel to Inverness. And plus they still got the victory thanks to 2 penalties. Roy McBain got the goal for Caley Thistle which was a great goal.
FACTS BETWEEN THE TEAMS • All League meetings between the teams have taken place in the SPL. • Aberdeen are unbeaten in all fixtures between the teams. • The biggest win in the fixture was when Aberdeen won 3-1 on 16/4/2004 away to us at Pittodrie! McBain scored Inverness’s solo goal. • If Inverness CT beat Aberdeen on Saturday, I believe they will have beaten every team in Scottish Football. • Inverness CT are currently on a unbeaten in 2007. • The ex-manager of Inverness CT, Craig Brewster, is likely to feature against his old side at the age of 40.
PLAYERS TO WATCH Dennis Wyness (ICT): The ex-Aberdeen player has finally found the back of the net after around 10 months without a league goal. He scored on the 2nd January which is almost 11 months since his last league goal against Dundee Utd in February last year. The goal was a cracker, as was his cup goal against Stirling last weekend. Lets all hope that Dennis continues scoring in every game this year when we face Aberdeen. Although, will it be a 3-man attack?
Squad: Mark Brown, Jonathon Smith, Michael Fraser, Darren Dods, Stuart Soane, Ross Tokely, Guy Kerr, Richard Hastings, Stuart McCaffrey, Stuart Golabek, Grant Munro, John Rankin, Ian Black, Roy McBain, Zander Sutherland, Alan Morgan, Barry Wilson, Russell Duncan, Craig Dargo, Gary McSwegan, Rory McAllister, Dennis Wyness, Graham Bayne Injured: Richie Hart Liam Keogh Suspended: Nobody.

Stirling Albion 1-6 Inverness CT - Scottish CUP

Caley Thistle cantered into the 4th round of the Tennents Scottish Cup with what turned out to be an easy win against Stirling Albion. Charlie Christie went with 3 strikers from the start and this paid off as the Caley Jags managed 6 goals from 5 different scorers. Official Club Historian Ian Broadfoot supplies the match report.
STIRLING ALBION 1-6 ICT
6th January 2007  Forthbank Stadium, Stirling  STIRLING ALBION  1 (O'Brien 15) Team: Hogarth, Hay (Taggart 55), McNally, Graham, Forsyth, Bell, Fraser, Aitken, O'Brien (Devine 76), Tomana (Wilson 55), Cramb Subs: Christie & Malseed
INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE  6 (Dargo 8,41, Wyness 13, McBain 22, Wilson 47, Morgan 69) Team:Brown, Tokely (McCaffrey 53), Dods, Munro, Wilson (Morgan 67), Duncan, Rankin, McBain, Wyness, Bayne (McAllister 62), Dargo Subs: Black & Fraser
Referee  Mike Ritchie  Attendance  1521  Man of the Match  Craig Dargo (ICT) Charlie Christie said: We're in the next round draw and that was the main priority today... we're just hoping for a decent draw. With Stirling riding high in the Second Division, and having home advantage, Caley Thistle had to be at their professional best going into this match. In the event a fine performance led to a comfortable victory.
This was only the Sixth meeting of the clubs and only the second in any cup - Stirling won a League Challenge Cup match 3-1 in August 1996 but never managed a league victory when both were in the Second Division in 1998/99.
The Binos were without Dene Shields who has gone back to Gretna from loan and also the injured Ian Cashmore. Richard Hastings missed out for ICT due to injury but Ian Black returned from suspension to take a place on the bench. Craig Dargo came back from injury to take his place in an attacking formation with three at the back and all three main strikers in the starting eleven.
With only eight minutes gone it was 1-0 to ICT when John Rankin stepped in as the Stirling defence tried to clear a high header from Graham Bayne - Rankin sent a low ball across goal from the left and Dargo bundled in from a yard out.
Five minutes later a Roy McBain cross from the left was knocked-down by Bayne and Dennis Wyness sent a superb left-foot volley from 20 yards past Myles Hogarth to make it 2-0. Two minutes after that Stirling temporarily came back into it when David O'Brien scored from 12 yards via the post.
Roy McBain made it 3-1 in 22 minutes when his first shot came back off Wyness and he hammered the rebound home from the edge of the box. John Fraser hit the bar for Stirling in 32 minutes but four minutes before the break Craig Dargo scored a tremendous goal to make it 4-1. He played a one-two with Wyness and chipped over Hogarth from 25 yards.
Half Time: 1-4
Two minutes into the second half Barry Wilson scored with a low shot from 25 yards which went in off the post to make it 5-1. Stirling were by now well and truly out and in 54 minutes it was nearly 6-1 when Bayne hit the post with a low drive.
The final goal came in 69 minutes from Alan Morgan just two minutes after he came on for Barry Wilson. He took a pass from Rankin, went past three defenders then scored from an acute angle through Hogarth's legs.
Full Time: 1-6
A good afternoon's work for ICT and a place in Sunday's fourth round draw.
[4th round draw paired ICT at home to either Dundee Utd or St Mirren]
