Early start for this one - whats the best way to go from Edinburgh to Dumfries using public transport? Edinburgh-Glasgow-Dumfries or Edinburgh-Carlisle-Dumfries?

If going by rail it'll be quicker via Carlisle. All depends what kind of price you get at this short notice.

1011 from Waverley changing at Carlisle will see you into Dumfries for 1257 (dep Carlisle at 1220)

On the way back it'll be 1756 from Dumfries to Carlisle change there for the 1904 to Waverley (arr 2055) :angry:

If you can be bothered with the early start in Edinburgh, I think a wee group of us are getting the 1012 train from Central and hoping to arrive in Dumfries in time to watch the County-Celtic game in a pub somewhere.

I'm driving down if anyone from the East wants a lift there or back.
