  1. Here's one of those "paper plans" from about 2000 ...... it got as far as hanging on the wall in John Sutherland's office. Plan on the office wall looking from away end to home end showing possible low level home end and west stand profile Main stand and low level west stand Main stand, low level west stand and a new north stand North Stand from the away end View from the bridge of North and West stands looking from Main stand to low level west stand View from car park near North stand
  2. I think that is based on previous experience though CD ..... We have seen numerous people leave for peanuts before, mostly because the end of a contract was near and we took what we could get rather than £0 a few months later. Although it does have benefits, that is one of the risks we have taken with only offering 2 year deals to our players. Personally, I think we have seen that the backroom team have a good eye for talent and I would like us to offer longer deals to some players, but I understand why we dont. I would also like to think that TB and the club have toughened up a bit now that we are sitting so high in the league and would laugh in the face of any offer under 7 figures, but lets face it, with the club typically losing anywhere from £150K - £250K per year unless we have cup runs or windfall payments the chance to balance the books for a couple of years with a single transfer fee is enticing ..... however, I live in hope that there are one or two with balls who might see that holding out for a higher fee could balance the books for 3 or 4 years or longer !!! Having said that ... I would far rather see ICT in Europe next year with Billy McKay banging one in in the Bernabeau from an Andy Shinnie assist .. and then rushing off to celebrate with Doran, Foran, Warren, Draper, OTJ, et all .... before saluting the Immortal One in the stands who is in the process of being ejected after over celebrating with their €2 beers !!!!
  3. Realistically, if we were selling him we would probably be happy with £1m, but stick him in a Celtic shirt and he would instantly be worth £10m ...... would rather keep him though and see him score in Europe next season (with an assist from Shinniesta)
  4. Interesting ... went and checked the salaries for last year (publicly available info in MLS) and Robson was on $600K for the year (or $11,500 a week, whichever you prefer) ... but Miller did indeed get over $1m .... $1,239,316 to be precise (or $23,833 per week) ... that is scary ! Also scary is that Kris Boyd made more than him .... Only 11 players in MLS making over a million US dollars a year last year .... Thierry Henry (New York) = $5.6m Rafael Marquez (New York) = $4.6m David Beckham (LA Galaxy) = $4m Robbie Keane (LA Galaxy) = $3.4m Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy) = $2.4m Torsten Frings (Toronto) = $2.4m Marco Di Vaio (Montreal) = $1.9m Julian De Guzman (FC Dallas [formerly at Toronto]) = $1.9m Danny Koevermans (Toronto) = 1.5m Kris Boyd (Portland) = $1.5m Kenny Miller (Vancouver) = $1.2m

I have been to one Ice Hockey game - Toronto Maple Leafs -v- Vancouver Canucks about 12 years ago (before I even moved here). It was a pre-season game and was quite entertaining. Yes there were breaks and stuff and no I didnt understand everything that was going on but it was fun. Shame that most "normal" fans cant afford to go see the Leafs though. Tickets are routinely several hundred dollars and most seats are owned by corporate season ticket holders. The entire league has been on strike for the last six months and the shortened season just started last weekend. I have been to several Baseball games over the years and that is more boring. It gets a little exciting when the ball is hit for a home run but way too much stopping and starting between innings for me. Plenty of seats available cheaply though given that the Blue Jays play in a 50,000 seat stadium they can barely fill when they are doing well (and it has been a while since they were doing well ... although 2013 is a year of expectations as they have made some big signings). Just before Christmas I went to my first NBA Basketball game. Toronto Raptors -V- Detroit Pistons. I have to say I quite enjoyed it. Not sure what I was expecting, but I got into it as the game wore on and it was pretty fast paced. Of these three traditionally North American sports (albeit ones lifted from other countries over the centuries), I have to say that I enjoyed the basketball the most ... fast paced action interspersed with breaks, but not a huge amount of them, and all of them quite short. The Buffalo Bills from the NFL have been struggling for crowds at home for years, so for the last 2 or 3 years they have played a few "regular season" home games in Toronto at the Rogers Centre (formerly called Skydome, and home of the Blue Jays). Its only a short hop from Buffalo to Toronto, maybe a 2 hour drive so no big deal for many diehard Bills fans. I havent managed to get to a game yet to complete my set of North American sports, but this has to be the worst for breaks and stop-start action so I am not really enthused by it .... I used to like watching NFL on Channel 4 many years ago, but that faded a long time ago. The other sports over here are Lacrosse, which is officially Canada's national sport (yes, even ahead of Ice Hockey), and the CFL which is like NFL but with lower crowds and 3 downs instead of 4 per play. I haven't been to either. The big problem I have with most of these sports is the manufactured atmosphere. Baseball is the worst for me, they blare out music or stick words up on the big screen, karaoke style, to try and build atmosphere but it just feels forced. there was less of that in Hockey and at the Basketball, but still enough for me to know I couldn't go there every week ! That's why I am sticking with MLS footy. At TFC there is none of this bull about forcing an atmosphere, it has developed and exists organically via the supporters groups. It is fun and the clubs, for the most part are on board with letting the fan culture grow and develop. The (diehard) fans are knowledgeable and don't call it soccer, they call it football like it is supposed to be, and other than half-time there are no breaks or other gimmicks. It may not be an elite league, but trust me, there are plenty of decent players and the standard has increased year on year. Many clubs who once played in NFL or other sport stadiums as a tenant have now built their own stadiums and despite what the media would have you believe, it was growing before David Beckham came along and will continue to do so now that he is gone ....
  6. Had to laugh at this clip on the BBC. Neil Lennon answering a journo's phone during his press conference after Hearts game. Given all his bad press, this actually shows he does have a sense of humour http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/21151977
  7. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/21151306 : BBC story that has direct quotes from the player and from Butcher who basically says the ball is in his court. Seems fair enough to me ..... If he does decide to go elsewhere, at least he will have weighed up his options. sounds like a sensible lad.

I'd question whether or not this will be the biggest. It is estimated that the FIFA world cup final 2010 had over a billion viewers. I believe the estimated viewing audience around for last years Superbowl was around 165 million with 111 million of those in US. It will, however, be an interesting contest It is all relative too ..... The (confirmed figure of) 111 million in USA watching the 2011 Superbowl and 111.3m who watched the 2012 game is about 30% of the population. The mens ice hockey final in the 2010 Winter Olympics may only have been watched by 16.6m in Canada, but that is over 50% of the population !!! I find that American broadcasters treat the "biggest" audience ever claims in the same way as they regard the Superbowl as a world championship ... it is not, it is an American championship as no team for any other country can get to the final. Likewise, the claims of biggest TV audience ever is largely based on the fact that consecutive Superbowls have traditionally had the largest TV audience in the states .... not the world .... although, the 2012 London Olympics is said to have blown even the biggest Superbowls out of the water with more than 219m viewers ! http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2012/08/13/london-olympics-on-nbc-is-most-watched-television-event-in-u-s-history/144780/ Look around google for a bit and you will find various claims to the largest audience - over 1billion for World Cup, 400m for a Cricket World Cup game between India and Pakistan and various others - but the 2008 Olympics opening ceremony is (currently) the leader in terms of 'verifiable' viewing figures, followed closely by the 2010 and 2002 World Cup finals: http://www.sportingintelligence.com/2010/06/10/world-cup-final-will-vie-for-record-of-second-most-watched-event-in-human-history-100605/ . I would guess that London 2012 will go into the mix their somewhere but cant find the 'verifiable' numbers right now. I like this quote from that page: I hate to quote Wikipedia as a 'factual' reference as anyone can say anything, but many of the claims on this page link to sources that are credible: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_watched_television_broadcasts
  9. I dont think they are that different from Scottish refs to be honest but definitely not on a par with the FIFA elite refs ... They do seem to have improved over the last 5 or 6 years though and I think 5 or 6 of them are full-time refs employed by MLS or the refs association. Just like Scotland, every one of them has his (or her) moments but most are 'average'. There are a few decent ones, a few that you cringe when you see the name and dont know what you will get, and a few that should be run out of town immediately !!! They also seem to like their own aerosols !!! In MLS, the ref has a can of white grass paint to mark the free kick spot and the 10 yard line for the wall - they seem to love playing with their own aerosols like that The biggest difference for me is the number of free kicks that are awarded during a game. Very few refs allow the game to flow and many are extremely card happy. I would also say that the referee assistants are very bad in MLS. In Scotland, you may get an assistant at an SPL game who is a 'lower grade' ref who is working his way up to the top grade ... I dont think that is the case in MLS, although I could be wrong, but most seem pretty clueless. However, having said all that ,... MLS refs (and Scottish ones) look like superstars compared to some of the refs we have seen in the Concacaf Champions League. These guys are a joke, and on occasions, lets just say you know what is going to happen to US or Canadian teams when you play in Mexico, Honduras, Panama etc when the ref is not from Canada/USA or one of the bigger nations within Concacaf. Although - and this is for the benefit of Scarlet - concacaf refs would not have been a factor for Barry as Vancouver and Montreal have not qualified for that competition for the last four years due to Toronto being Canadian champs for the last 4 years.

Yup, it will be the first time two brothers have ever faced each other from opposite sides in the Superbowl as player or coach. Prior to this SB, there have been 18 sets of brothers who have played in the Superbowl, one of those 'sets' had 3 brothers, but they have always been in different games, or on two occasions, in the same team (Blackwoods with Dolphins in 1983/1985, and Griffin's with the Bengals in 1982. Keith and Jim Fahnhorst were both on the 49ers in 1985 but Jim was inactive for the game.) But it depends on what sport you regard as biggest ? It has happened in the NHL Stanley Cup 6 times and the first time it happened there were actually 2 different sets of brothers facing off against each other ... It has happened in the MLB World Series 5 times It has happened once at the World Cup, but not in the final - Germany-Ghana in 2010 featured half-brothers Jerome Boateng (GER) and Kevin-Prince Boateng (Ghana)
  11. Good article here from Michael McColl on Canadian Soccer News. http://www.canadiansoccernews.com/content.php?4118-Barry-Robson-A-Farewell-to-Arms He mentions watching Barry play at East Fife so not sure if he is/was a Forfar or ICT fan in a former life. Some of the stuff rings so true to my recollections of Barry at ICT that I just had to comment (HighlanderICT is my comment). I saw Barry in one MLS game. TFC 3 - 2 Vancouver in July of last year and he had a pretty quiet game to be honest. He wouldnt have been happy though. TFC went 0-1 down then clawed the game back to 1-1 and then went ahead 2-1 before Vancouver equalised 1 minute into stoppage time. There was another 4 minutes of stoppage time after that and right at the death TFC's Canadian international midfielder Terry Dunfield, who had previously been at Vancouver, popped up with the game winning header ... boy was he chuffed with that goal ! One of my images from the game as Robson fails to track Torsten Frings. (MLS allows 'personal use' photography) Terry Dunfield scores the winner (not my pic - I got a pic of the goal, but not the celebration .. was too busy celebrating myself !)
  12. 3 goals and 2 assists in 17 starts (+1 sub appearance). 10 shots on target from 35 attempts. 2 yellows, 33 fouls conceded, no reds. decent profile page here: http://www.mlssoccer.com/players/barry-robson ... even mentions ICT !
  13. Breaking news over here: "Barry Robson flies back to UK tonight after coming to agreement to terminate his deal with Vancouver Whitecaps" It was reported earlier that he wasn't at the first day of training (today) for the forthcoming 2013 season, and early indications quoted "personal issues" ... seems they must have meant "personnel issues" !!! One of the more prominent journos summed up his MLS career thus: "Robson ends a short, unfulfilled tenure in Vancouver. More arms waved in the air than assists or goals. Both sides needed to move on." Wonder what is next for him ? Retirement ? a swansong in D3 ?
  14. Its very warm and fuzzy here in Toronto today Scarlet ..... it was a little chilly this morning but 3 goals have warmed the cockles ..... (to answer question, it was -8 yesterday, but looks like a positive temp today (not been outside yet). have had virtually no snow and no sustained cold spells .. the -20/-30 are further east or north, not with us)
  15. Billy McKay scores when he wants to !!!!! and it is funny - normally its Robbo at the TCS and he is delirious when ICT score, today its Willie Miller and he sounds suicidal
  16. Billy McKay makes it 2-0
  17. Andy Shinnie :)
  18. I think Willie Miller has fallen asleep on openallmics .......
  19. it's the Record, it failed to be relevant a long time ago ......
  20. Something clearly wrong here ..... County win 4-1 in Paisley, and Mark Brown saves a penalty with the last kick of the ball !!!
  21. Butcher's Blitz Inverness' second half blitz blows Aberdeen away at a less than warm Tulloch Caledonian Stadium. Magnificent second half goals from Andrew Shinnie and Billy McKay (twice) made sure that Terry Butcher could enjoy his first match after the winter break and justified his decision to remain at Inverness for footballing reasons as Aberdeen were torn the proverbial new one in the second period. Josh Meekings replaced Mathew Cooper in the starting line up and Nick Ross and Daniel Devine made the bench as the hosts looked to continue the good work after the mid-winter tropical break which had been replaced by somewhat chillier breezes from Siberia, or as we know it, Aberdeen. Aberdeen tasted life after Ryan Fraser, and I doubt it tasted very sweet with Smith and Hayes playing wide and Vernon and McGinn the target men. A Graeme Shinnie free kick was headed forward by Ross Draper and Foran met the ball ten yards out but Langfield dived full length to tip the ball round his left hand post to prevent Inverness from taking the lead. Aberdeen had their best moment of the first half when they pounced on an error in midfield. Draper and Foran were caught playing too tight and Aberdeen pounced on the loose ball as Jonny Hayes sprinted into the box, and as he cut inside he drove a low ball goalwards but Antonio Reguero was equal to it and gathered the ball comfortably. Hayes was the Dons only threat but he was being closely watched by Meekings and co. Owain Tudur-Jones sent Billy McKay scampering towards the Dons box with a delightful lob forward and as he held up play he unselfishly laid the ball into Aaron Dorans' path but he blazed the ball wide of the junction twix post and bar courtesy of a timely intervention from Robertson on the edge of the area. Doran linked well with the ever available David Raven and the full backs delivery deserved better than to be headed over by contract abstainer Andy Shinnie from seven yards. Doran was buzzing around and looked menacing every time he got the ball, just the final ball eluding him for now, and he and Draper combined to set up a strike from the big midfielder but it went wide. Jonny Hayes was kept relatively quiet by the Inverness back line but he still managed to get to the byeline on a couple of occasions but his cut backs found no takers although McGinn managed to volley one over the bar with Reguero making a TV dive, probably trying to keep himself warm. Half Time 0-0 Terry Butcher maybe had some straight talking to do and his players obviously listened intently during the interval as we loitered with intent around the visitors box for most of the second forty-five, but not before Aberdeen had their best chance of the game. Raven and Warren got in a fankle on the edge of their own box, with Warren being wrong footed by Raven's deft pass which allowed Hayes to jink into the box and he stepped inside Graeme Shinnie who had closed in to cover, but Reguero pulled off a brilliant reaction save to deny Hayes the opener and this proved crucial to the outcome of the match. Doran and Foran linked well on the left and Foran chipped a ball onto the edge of the box where Andy Shinnie made himself available. He left Russell Anderson on the turf as he went for the bye-line and he had no right to score, but score he did from the tightest of angles as he lashed the ball into the roof of the net from two yards out on the edge of the six yard box. He did even better to escape the clutches of a delighted Ryan Esson who sprinted after him behind Langfield's goal. Goal of the season coming up soon as Inverness stepped up a gear and the showboating started. Raven burst over the halfway line on the right before rolling the ball back inside to Doran. He turned quickly and sped goalwards before releasing the ball towards Draper who was facing his own goal some 25 yards out. He in turn transferred the ball Messi like with as good a back heel as you will see, magnificently into the path of the sprinting Billy McKay who danced across the box before tidily planting the ball behind Langfield. A breathtaking team goal brilliantly manufactured and brilliantly finished. Ross Draper must have eyes in the back of his head to pick out Billy he scores when he wants McKay and the wee man did what he does best. Superb. Inverness were on a roll now and Draper almost scored another team goal as he was sent through on Langfield after a six man move cut the overworked Dons defence open again, but his sliding flick rolled agonisingly across the face of the goal and round the wrong side of the post. The cold was almost forgotten as the icing on the cake was supplied by Billy McKay. Doran fed Raven on the right and his first time cross was head flicked on by Andy Shinnie. McKay split his markers and lashed a first time volley high past 'Clangers' from 12 yards for a not undeserved brilliant third goal for Inverness, and his 20th goal of the season, or 14 in 10 games if you prefer. Ross and Roberts entered the frozen arena and almost had an immediate impact as the Aberdeen defence were now praying for the final whistle as they hung on for a three goal defeat. Roberts almost adding a fourth as he brilliantly chested a ball round the defender but the danger was cleared as he nearly caught up with his own pass, delightful skills from the youngster. Full Time 3-0 How about that. An absolute mauling for the Dons who can have no complaints about the scoreline as Inverness ran them ragged in the second half scoring three special goals into the bargain and setting themselves up nicely for next weekends league cup semi-final at Easter Road against the Jambo's. While the strikers were getting the plaudits for some clinical finishing, let's not forget the contribution from the rest of the team who performed brilliantly as a unit. Reguero made a crucial save at the start of the second half, and also made one or two timely interventions, but that apart, was largely unused and did well to keep warm considering the conditions. The back line are just brimming with confidence now and who is that sensational right back we have. David Raven is completely unrecognisable from the fellow that arrived pre-season, a guy that was laughed off the park in most early games. Well, not any more. He has been outstanding of late and has grown into the position. He makes himself available more often than not and his crosses are becoming legendary. Our goals today would not have looked out of place at the Camp Nou, and Draper's back heel flick into the path of McKay was a particular highlight that will long be remembered. Billy not breaking stride before finishing with aplomb. All in all, one of the best half's of football seen at the stadium and Butcher was milking and orchestrating the applause at the end, a great way to finish off what has been a momentous week for the club. tm4tj MotM:- If it were not for an outstanding performance by the returning Josh Meekings, then Dave the Rave would have got my nod, but Josh was simply superb. A couple of tasty tackles on former Inverness favourite Jonny Hayes went down well with the home support and he looks as solid as a rock at the back, ably assisted by Warren at the heart of the defence. If truth be told, there were no weaknesses today and any one of the starting eleven could have been on my list, but Josh Meekings is my MotM. 23. David Hind made 7 appearances: 2 league starts, 3 as sub, 1 cup start, 1 as sub. listed as a sub a further 13 times, 12 in league, once in cup. no goals scored. Dale Gillespie didnt make a first team appearance but he was officially a first team squad member and I know he was listed on the subs bench 12 times up to the end of the 08/09 season. not sure about his last season (09/10) would have to look that up, but don't have the time right now.
  24. Make that 9 I think ..... Russell Duncan, Dale Gillespie, Stuart Golabek, Andrew Greig, Richie Hart, Richard Hastings, David Hind, Ally Ridgers, Zander Sutherland

Last time I was underwhelmed with the announcements of Scottish bosses was Roxburgh and Brown .... both of whom did statistically better than most !
