Matchday Thread - Hibernian -V- ICT
Just processing the highlights to go on the official site so now had a chance to see what everyone is talking about ..... Great goal from Hayes - the goal itself was decent rather than astonishing, but the beating of 5 players in the process is sublime and elevates it to a much higher standard ! The "leg break" tackle !!! Holy **** ! If refs can rescind cards based on TV footage, why can they not award them. That was a horrible tackle and Foran is extremely lucky not to have suffered a horrendous injury. The ref also needs a talking to .. how the F did he miss it ? I have played it back a few times and each time it looks worse .....

The upgraded site - positive feedback!
That may come in time - the initial theme is a long process, but creating one that involves just a simple colour change is not a huge undertaking. remind us about it in 2 or 3 months if it doesnt appear !!!!! I did however re-enable the default theme for now .... go to the very bottom of the page on the bottom left. there is (now) an option there to change theme from CTO to default.

Hibernian -V- Inverness CT - Report
Caley Thistle headed to Easter road for post-Christmas league duty hoping to heap more misery on Pat Fenlon who has yet to earn a point as Hibees manager. Perhaps the CaleyJags could also end the year with a cleansheet? The cleansheet was gone early doors as Garry O'Connor opened the scoring with a great free-kick after 8 minutes, but not to be outdone, Jonny Hayes stepped up in the 41st minute, beat 3 or 4 men before unleashing a 22 yard drive into the net to equalise. A classic game it was not, but either side could have grabbed all three points on numerous occasions but in the end the points were shared as it finished 1-1 Alternative Maryhill provides the match report ...... A trip to Easter Road is always one of the most enjoyable on the Caley Away itinerary, and with Terry Butcher’s team facing a struggling Hibs team on the back of two fine performances against Rangers and Aberdeen, and with peace, goodwill to all men and fair amount of Christmas and Boxing Day spirit probably still in the bloodstream, it was an unusually optimistic group of the usual away day suspects who turned up at Easter Road via the Brass Monkey and the Iona. However, in truth this was a pretty patchy game briefly illuminated by two quite beautiful goals, and while a draw away from home is never a bad result, ultimately it was probably a frustrating night for Caley Thistle’s players, who dominated possession but never managed to kill off a Hibernian side clearly lacking in confidence and creativity. Ross Tokely and Andrew Shinnie were again sidelined and despite having Josh Meekings available, Terry Butcher opted to go with the same line-up that defeated Aberdeen on Christmas Eve, with Kenny Gillet partnering Roman Golobart in central defence and Graeme Shinnie and Thomas Piermayr at left and right back respectively. Richie Foran was again deployed as a deeper-lying central midfielder alongside David Davis and Lee Cox, and Gregory Tade and Jonny Hayes performed the attacking wide roles, supporting lone striker Billy Mackay. The early running in the game was made by Caley Thistle, in particular Gregory Tade, who was ruled offside in the first minute, then shortly afterwards created a threat when he ran onto a long diagonal ball from Thomas Piermayr and pressurised Hibs ‘keeper Graham Stack into fumbling as he tried to pick the ball out of the air. In the seventh minute, however, Hibs were presented with their first opportunity when Roman Golobart, who otherwise had an outstanding game, bundled Danny Galbraith over from behind twenty yards from goal. Garry O’Connor stepped up and swung a perfect free kick into the top left hand corner of Esson’s goal. Although in a pre-match interview one of the Hibs players had spoken of the team being ‘scared’ to take the lead, the Edinburgh side briefly seemed to take some heart from the early lead and were the better team for the subsequent ten minutes, forcing another couple of free kicks which, thankfully, did not trouble Esson. As the game approached the twentieth minute, however, Caley Thistle began to take more control, with the midfield trio of Foran, Davis and Cox particularly influential in their willingness to outfight and outmuscle their Hibernian counterparts. A typical piece of determination from Foran almost brought the equaliser in the twenty-second minute, when he dispossessed Lewis Stevenson on the edge of the box and crashed a left-footed shot off the post. From the rebound, Cox, Davis and Hayes combined to keep the pressure up and Hibs were only granted a respite when Jonny Hayes curled a shot across the face of the goal and narrowly wide from the right hand edge of the penalty area. These two near misses signalled the start of a period of concerted ICT pressure: a Hayes free kick into the wall from just outside the area was deflected for a corner, with Hayes claiming that O’Connor had handled the ball; this corner was followed by two more in quick succession, as Hibs struggled to deal with Caley Thistle’s attackers. Just after the half hour mark there was an incident that might, on a different night, have changed the game. Richie Foran won a header in the Hibernian half, and as he ran forward to try to bring the loose ball under control, Sean O’Hanlon brought his full weight down, studs first, on the ICT captain’s outstretched shin. Giving O’Hanlon the benefit of the doubt, he might simply have mistimed his challenge, but there is no disputing that it was a highly dangerous tackle that could have broken Foran’s leg and merited a red card. Somehow referee Steven Mclean missed it altogether and allowed play to continue, until it became clear that Foran was in real pain. From the restart, Billy Mackay gave possession back to Hibs; in hindsight, he would have been justified in taking a shot. A few minutes later, Caley Thistle’s superiority was finally rewarded, in some style. Garry O’Connor, during a rare Hibernian attack, was dispossessed by Golobart, who passed to Piermayr, who in turn fed the ball to Hayes, midway inside his own half. The winger set off at pace down the right, evading a challenge from Danny Galbraith before cutting inside, weaving between Richie Towell and Lewis Stevenson and then, from twenty yards, steering a beautifully-controlled low shot beyond Stack’s outstretched left hand before the Hibernian central defenders could get out to close him down. Sublime. Hibs did try to muster some sort response before half time, and made an appeal for a penalty when O’Connor went down in the area trying to control a high, dangerous long ball from David Stephens. The referee, however, thought otherwise and booked O’Connor for simulation, and the TV replays show that he probably got it right: while Gillet did have his leg across O’Connor’s body, O’Connor already seemed to be leaving his feet when the challenge came in. The second half followed a pattern similar to much of the first, with Caley Thistle continuing to dominate the midfield and Hibs’ chances largely limited to a few long-range efforts, such as Danny Galbraith’s chip over the bar around the fiftieth minute, and an effort from Leith Griffiths that flew harmlessly over just a few minutes later. For all their superiority of possession, however, ICT’s players created very few clear-cut chances of their own: the team’s biggest shortcoming last night was its inability to bring the front men, and Billy Mackay in particular, into play more effectively. This was also true of the Aberdeen game, and it could be that the difficult weather conditions were partly to blame; certainly Tade, Mackay and Hayes showed they could link well as a front three against Rangers at Ibrox. Hopefully it is something that can be improved upon before we face St Johnstone at home on Monday, as it was this that probably made the difference between a draw and a win last night. In the seventy-third minute Terry Butcher made his first change, with Greg Tansey replacing the impressive Lee Cox, and two minutes later Aaron Doran made his long-awaited return to first team action when he came on for Billy Mackay, with Tade moving into the central striker’s role for the final quarter of an hour. In contrast to some of his earlier games for the club where looked a little tentative, Doran immediately showed a willingness to get involved, but his first action almost cost the team, as he gave away possession in front of goal to set up a Hibs attack that the ICT defence managed to scramble clear. Normal time drew to a close with Jonny Hayes having a couple of long-range attempts that did not trouble Stack, then, as three minutes of stoppage time were announced, Hibs belatedly showed a real appetite to win the game, forcing three corners in quick succession and leaving the 250 ICT supporters chewing their fingernails. The second almost brought an undeserved winner as Sean O’Hanlon, who arguably should not have been on the field, directed a close-range header on goal, but Richie Foran, capping a fine performance, was there to block with his head. Overall, then, it was a third consecutive Caley Thistle performance with much to admire, but one which still leaves a few questions unanswered about how the team will progress in 2012. After a stuttering first half-season, Terry Butcher seems to have found a system that suits the personnel he has at his disposal and has allowed the team to build more consistency in terms of performance if not necessarily results. However, two of the key players in this system, David Davis and Roman Golobart, see their loan deals expire in January, and it is still unclear how likely it is that either will be extended. If we lose both, will, say, Tansey and Tokely be able to slot into their roles without affecting the team’s performance, or will the manager be forced to do some rethinking? And although he has showed some neat touches in the box, is Billy Mackay really the right man to play as alone striker should Butcher stick with this system, or will the manager try to bring in a more physical striker? Finally, if a January bid comes in for Jonny Hayes, outstanding since his return from injury, will the ICT board be strong enough to resist it? I’m certainly a lot more optimistic about the team’s prospects than I was when I wrote my last match report just one month ago, but with January just a couple of days round the corner, it looks like interesting times lie ahead. 28/12/11 : Easter Road Stadium, Edinburgh Hibernian: 1 - O'Connor (8) TEAM: Stack, Booth, O'Hanlon, Stephens, Towell (Palsson 75), Wotherspoon, Galbraith, Stevenson, Sproule, O'Connor, Griffiths (Scott 63) SUBS: Brown, Murray, Welsh, Stanton, Sodje Booked: Stephens (25), O'Connor (44), O'Hanlon (87) Sent Off: none I.C.T.: 1 - Hayes (41) TEAM: Esson, Golobart, G.Shinnie, Gillet, Piermayr, Cox (Tansey 73), Hayes, Davis, Foran, Tade, McKay (Doran 75) SUBS: Tuffey, Meekings, Ross, Morrison, Sutherland, Booked: Golobart (37), Davis (88) Sent Off: none Referee: Steven McLean Attendance: 6923

Inverness CT -V- Aberdeen - Report
Ho Ho Ho Merry Christmas! ICT 2-1 Aberdeen Caley Thistle once again went 2 goals up in a match at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium, but this time, unlike the Dundee Utd game, they didnt throw away three goals and a victory .... just the one goal this time. It means ICT still havent had a clean sheet all season, but there is a pre-Xmas present of three valuable points. Christmas shopping was on hold as Inverness Caledonian Thistle had more pressing business, the collection of three points from some very benevolent Aberdonian's..............that'll be a first. The Xmas spirit was in full flow in the pre-match bars as the Dons support came in numbers to support their idols, unfortunately their team were not quite so responsive and could only offer a dire performance in return for the vocal backing and Inverness were the benefactors on a blustery Christmas Eve at Tulloch Caledonian Stadium. The 2-1 scoreline flattered the Dons and there was to be no repeat of the dramatic collapse that saw Dundee United come back from the dead to snatch all three points. In truth, the weather ruined any hope that there would be an entertaining game on display as the blustery conditions made kicking the ball in the air a lottery. However, that did not stop some of them trying, and failing miserably. Epic Fail! On that note I can describe the first half as like the weather; grim. Ross Tokely and Andy Shinnie were absent for Inverness, both suffering late injuries, but captain Richie Foran made the start before his yellow card tot-ups come into play. Aberdeen made four alterations, Youl Mawene, Andrew Considine, Chris Clark and Josh Magennis coming in, while McArdle, Fallon and Fraser Fyvie made the bench with Mohamed Chalali sitting this one out. Not really much to report about the first half but Esson was the first keeper called upon to thwart Magennis as he parried his effort wide. Tade was giving the Aberdeen back four some grief as he tore down the wing, leaving defenders trailing in his wake, but there was no takers for his tantalising cross into the danger area, in all honesty nobody could keep up with him. Arnason put a header wide as Aberdeen started to get to grips with the weather, but Esson remained untroubled for the half, as was Aberdeen keeper Brown as Shinnie blazed a shot over and a Golobart header went high over the bar; better things were to come in the second half though. Half Time 0-0 24/12/11 Tulloch Caledonian Stadium - Referee Alan Muir - Attendance 5888 Inverness CT 2 - Golobart (64), Tade (69) TEAM: Esson, Piermayr, Golobart, G.Shinnie, Gillet, Cox (Tansey 79), Hayes, Davis, Tade, Foran, McKay (Sutherland 90) SUBS: Tuffey, Ross, Morrison, Doran Booked: Golobart (1), G.Shinnie (85) Aberdeen 1 - Fallon (76) TEAM: Brown, Jack (Megginson 86), Mawene, Considine, Foster, Clark, Milsom, Osbourne, Arnason, Magennis (Mackie 70), Vernon (Fallon 70) SUBS: Gonzalez, McArdle, Robertson, Fyvie Booked: Considine (88) Conditions remained the same in the second period and play restarted with not much cheer in the stadium as hot food was at a premium. With Inverness playing into the South stand, it was nearly twenty minutes before anything happened, Jason Brown making an excellent save as Davis latched onto a ball on the angle and drove goalwards only for the keeper to replicate Esson's first half save. From the corner, Hayes bulleted a wind assisted cross onto the soaring Spaniard's napper and Golobart directed the ball easily into the net for a deserved first goal for Inverness. Ole Ole Ole Senor Golobart. Billy McKay spooned an effort over the bar which would have helped matters but we were soon to double our advantage. Almost on the seventy minute mark, Gregory Tade pounced on a loose ball in the Dons box to drive home a second goal for Inverness. Game over you would have thought, but no, we don't do anything the easy way. (remember United). Seven minutes later and it was twitchy bums time as Fallon scored a sloppy goal for the clean sheet to disappear and give the Dons a bit of hope that they barely deserved. If truth be told, Aberdeen hardly troubled the resolute Inverness defence and we saw this game out more comfortably than it appeared. The fans being more troubled than the players on the park. The Dons did produce a couple of late corners and throw-ins, but with Golobart commanding his box and Foran having his best game of the season, there was no way Aberdeen were going to get a second. Full Time 2-1 Some great contributions from Foran, Davis and Tade in some very trying conditions, but one man was literally head and shoulders above everyone else and that was 19 year old Roman Golobart, the sponsors MotM and most other peoples as well. EsplÃndido espectÃculo Senor Roman! This result keeps us clear of Hibs and Dunfermline at the wrong end of the table and only two points behind Aberdeen. Hibs at Easter Road on wednesday evening is the next game followed by St Johnstone at home in the new year. Merry Xmas.

Keeper v pitch invader
read this story but didnt see the video (blocked at work) 1. Yes and No - justified in stopping him, but the stills I saw looked like he was giving or about to give the pitch invader a good kicking ... that was or would be excessive. restrain yes, assault, no. 2. No - Its happened before when a pitch invader was stopped by a player, cant remember the game, but was sometime this year too. In that case the player got sent off as well so maybe the rules are tying the hands of the ref. I believe both sendings off were wrong as the player is only trying to get the game restarted by removing the invader (even if he does it with excessive force - which is for someone else (police) to deal with). The invader is not part of the game and therefore the ref should not book or send the player off ... he should shake his hand instead for trying to get it restarted ! 3. Yes. I believe the sending off was wrong ... maybe not by the laws of the game, which perhaps ties the hands of the ref in making a decision, but in the spirit of the game, the team should not be disadvantaged in that manner where the player is trying to stop an external force from disrupting the game. I would support the decision by the manager, although I would be quite frustrated had I been a member of the crowd in attendance !

oh dear .... do I need to get our lawyers on standby again ????- Standing
I think you're onto something there! Better still, those restraints that come down over your head like you get on rollercoasters and fairground rides. They would be activated at 3pm and released only at half time and full time, ensuring full compliance with current no-standing rules. Some of our former officials would have loved that ..... imagine the scene .... set the restraints, then if anyone misbehaves you have something like one of those fairground 'grabber' machines where individual users can be ejected ..... "I say old chap .... grab that IHE fellow, he's pissing one orf" .... followed by whirring and clinking of machinery as the grab hook travels over, locates IHE and lifts him high above the crowd ... He's in his kilt so the ladies get quite an eyeful, and the gents see something that will haunt them for the rest of their days .... steady folks, I mean he is actually wearing underwear, not going commando .... the grabber hook then carries him over to the edge of the firth where a special ICT modification, the "Monty Python Boot" propels him into the firth to swim with the dolphins ..... HMS Sneck picks him up and he starts the process again in 2 weeks ......- Standing
I thank the club for their clarifications on this, and can totally understand how it will not be a priority in the forseeable future if that is the likely criteria that they need to meet .... If you calculate it out at roughly 2500 seats per existing stand then it is £210,000.00 per stand just to buy the new seats, and that is not including the labour to put it in, or any other works that may need done to accommodate the change. Also, not sure how 'sellable' the old seats would be but each stand has about £75,000 worth that might end up being thrown away ... although I am sure the club could sell a few hundred to fans as a keepsake. It would however be interesting to see what reaction would be to a request for a small terracing area on the west side ... it is only a few rows high, and - realistically speaking rather than talking about it via the rules - it might need nothing more than a few crush barriers (if at all) and because it is not fenced in like the stadiums where crush deaths tragically occurred, then surges should not be an issue as there is an escape route. I am all for being aware of what happened in the past, and in respecting the findings of the Taylor and/or other reports dealing with football crowds, as well as incorporating some of the valid and sensible suggestions made in these reports, but not to the extent where we once again continue to go to the extreme each time and figuratively speaking always take the sledgehammer to crack a nut route with a blanket ruling that tries to cover hundreds of potential scenarios (or disparate designs of stadiums) and the subtle nuances with a single solution ... for that reason, I stand by what I said in earlier posts .... Maybe we should look around the globe to areas where crowd control and standing is perhaps not such an emotive issue.... I regularly attend matches in a FIFA sanctioned league, in a 21,000+ all-seater stadium, which is usually 90-100% full for most games. The seats may not be exactly the same as those used in Scottish stadia, but if not, they are as near as dammit. the particular section of the stadium where my seat is located is designated as a "supporters section" where standing is encouraged, (or pretty much required if you want to actually see anything when everyone else is standing) and I would say that this section is probably more than 100% full as there are definitely 'interlopers' who make their way into the standing area from other areas of the ground where it is not allowed. I have witnessed 77 league games (MLS-->CONCACAF-->FIFA), 9 Champions League games (CONCACAF-->FIFA), 8 Canadian Championship Games (CSA-->CONCACAF-->FIFA), as well as friendlies against the likes of Benfica, Aston Villa, Independiente, River Plate, Real Madrid and others. I have also been present at the 2008 All-Star game and the 2010 MLS Cup Final which were both held in Toronto. In all of those games, the stadium had a significant proportion of the crowd that were allowed to stand. The walkways were no deeper than in Scotland, the seats were no different, and outside of the OF, the crowds were significantly higher. There was no "Taylor Report" over here but it would be foolish to assume that means the governing bodies are oblivious to it. Much of North American "soccer" (sorry) is managed by or watched by ex-pats (and other nationalities) and many of the other supporters (not ex-pats) have followed European leagues for - in some cases - decades ! Maybe someone at the SPL should take a wee jolly over to North America and see how the average 20000+ crowds at Toronto FC, Vancouver, and Los Angeles, or the incredible 38000+ average at Seattle deal with standing ...... and those are in stadiums that let you drink too !!!!!! - A Message from Santa
