Unfortunately, thats the nature of the beast ... we can only spend what we make (and a little bit on top of that if the accounts are anything to go by) and what we make does not allow for longer term contracts with signing on fees that reflect the length of longer terms, nor does it allow us to shop for "proven" players on higher wages, instead we are looking for raw or untapped talent and hoping they will come good .... And as for short term loans, lets put that one right into context ... the two most recent loans were short because they were to cover for injuries - expected to be of 3-4 months duration - that occurred right at the start of the season before the window was closed. Its a gamble, of course it is, but if Hayes, Cox, Hogg, Tudur-Jones etc etc etc all come back around December/January then the wisdom of a short term loan may well be seen ... the wage bill is precarious in terms of making the books balance and a short term loan means we can send the player back if our other players recover in time. Conversely, the loans could also be extended if that doesnt happen. In my mind, thats actually quite astute rather than foolish. The biggest mistake made, and yes I believe it was a huge mistake, and have said it a dozen times in other threads, was getting rid of Grant and Russell. They could still have done a job for us this season (and beyond) and TB does have to live with that one.... but that in itself is not a sacking offence ! I do still believe it will click well before the season is over but I have to admit to being concerned. I dont like us sitting at the bottom, but we are not adrift like we were the last time. There are only two wins separating 6th spot and 12th so I am not hitting the panic button (yet). I respect the right of others to be concerned, or even to think its time for a change, its a valid argument given our league position ... but I respectfully disagree. And I disagree not because my head is up my @rse or in the sand, but because I have a different opinion PS -- heard Terry has followed CaleyD around the stadium replacing his button with these ones ....

  4. Did he though? or is that just another story which has grown wings? Quite possibly a story that grew wings ... but the comment was made to me during his time at the club, by one of the players who had supposedly been on the end of a fine so I didnt get it third hand. Bear in mind, we were a part-time 3rd division team at the time so remuneration was minimal and any 'fine' would also be low, and to be fair to the manager, if true, and I do concede my version is only one side of the story, it was perhaps one of his ways of trying to enforce some discipline and teach some tactical awareness to players on the park. Cant deny his own class as a player, too many international caps to argue that ... Interesting categories .... Tactical awareness: Thats a hard one. Overall I would have to say Paterson. How many games did we fight back from being down, how many games did we win away, how many games did we go through without a 0-0 draw, how many games did we win that we were "not supposed to". The mantra was to score more goals than the opposition and he did so while trying to play entertaining football on the deck which was virtually unheard of in the lower divisions. After that, to be honest I really dont know the rest of the order and you could make very good points for each manager as they all had something at some time for ICT. For me, Robbo / Butcher perhaps come next as both won us the 1st division and both had to use their tactics in the SPL (albeit briefly for Robbo at ICT [and Hearts]). I would have to put Charlie ahead of Brewster because in the season he took over he won all 5 games after the split without conceding a goal, something that had never been done before, and then Brewster after that. Brew may have had better tactics than I credit him for but like others have mentioned his interviews just didnt portray that and being the only manager to have been sacked by ICT his legacy is perhaps more tarnished than it really should be. Baltacha perhaps unfairly brings up the rear here, but maybe that had more to do with players and the fact we were a part-time 3rd division team. You can only work with what you have, and although we remember some good players from those first years, perhaps it is unfair to comapre a "year 1" team in SFL3 to fully professional players 17 years later in the SPL ? Fitness training: Brewster undoubtedly had us the fittest we have ever been, no question about that whatsoever. Again, not so sure about the order of the rest so to me, lets call them even ! Scouting abilities: Paterson wins this category for me. On a shoestring budget he found players willing to play for ICT either to revive careers or as raw youngsters and of course, one of those raw youngsters, Rossco, is still playing for us in the SPL 15 years later. We had the likes of Robson who Paterson nurtured, sent on loan and is now an international, we had others like Barry Wilson, Iain Stewart, Charlie Christie, Dennis Wyness, Bobby Mann etc who all went on to become club legends !!! I think Butcher has the potential to come closest to Pele in this category as he has brought a lot of youth to the team either from within such as Nick Ross & Graeme Shinnie, or he has sought them out in lower leagues such as Hayes, Cox. Most of them are exciting players with bags of potential so for that reason I would say he has a good eye. Look down a list of your favourite ICT players and the rest of the managers will also feature. Each one of them has had both success and failure in the signing stakes .. and for every Adam Rooney, Don Cowie, or Paul Cherry, there is also the shadow of an Andy Barrowman, Dean Mcdonald or Darren Thomson lurking around. Profile (are they well known): I guess part of this answer depends on whether you mean 'well known' when they arrived, or well known 'now'. I think Butcher is ahead in this category regardless of that question. An international captain for England, Rangers captain, TV commentary jobs, Scotland assistant all before coming to ICT, not to mention the iconic bloodied headband photo. everyone knows him. Robbo would come next for me based on his Hearts and Scotland career. He is maybe not a global brand like Butcher, but certainly higher profile within Scotland. Baltacha would be next courtesy of his multitude of caps for USSR/Ukraine and then it would be Brewster, Paterson & Christie in that order based on their 'fame' when arriving at ICT. If its based on current profile then Paterson would move up a notch given his success at ICT, his profile after the Feb8th game, his move to Aberdeen, and unfortunately how that job finally turned out Managerial success: I have to defer to the order I gave a few posts up and say 1. Paterson 2= Butcher/Robbo, 4= Christie/Brewster, 6. Baltacha. Paterson may not statistically be the best, but by sheer volume of games, and how many of them were memorable or important in our history he gets my vote. With Robbo, he had a great season when we won the SFL1 and went up to the SPL but we may never know how he would have fared there and with Butcher, its still a work in progress but the signs are encouraging enough for me to put him ahead of Christie, who did well but didnt stay long enough to see what the long term would have brought, as well as Brewster V1.0 who I thought did well before buggering off to Tannadice. Brewster 2.0 (the wanderer returns) was a failure for me, and Baltacha did nothing of note in his single season that I can remember.
  5. #1 = Paterson: not statistically the best (thats Robbo) but think this choice is a no-brainer for me. #2 = Robbo / Butcher: these guys are equal 2nd for me as I am happy with the job both did / are doing. Both got us to SPL #4 = Christie / Brewster V1.0: Charlie got us to a good position, won 5 in a row to end his first SPL season. Brewster first time around was doing ok. --------- didnt make the cut Brewster V2.0 - was he really that bad, or did we just think that because he left us in the lurch first time ! Baltacha - allegedly fined defenders for going over half way line !!!
  6. For me, in no particular order .... Celtic 1-3 ICT - (Feb 8th game of course) Hearts 1-3 ICT - another cup upset ICT 4-3 Ayr - what a game, 0-3 down at HT ICT 7-3 Ayr - another classic with Denzil on top form Livi 4-3 ICT - an iconic game and lives long in memory because of Bill Leckie's article about it. Also remeber the contrast with the OF game the next day where Dallas was hit with a coin. The good and bad of Scottish football all in one weekend. As site admin, going to squeeze another one in ..... ICT 0-3 Rangers @ Tannadice in the cup. We may have lost but I think this was the day where many ICT fans realised we were in the big time ... Goram, Gazza, Laudrup, McCoist playing against the wee team from the sneck in a proper fixture not just a friendly !!!!
  7. Tall order though it would of been, even miraculous against the best footballing side in the world, we were a point ahead of the Czechs going into this fixture so we did - technically - fall at the final hurdle .... however, I do agree that qualification was not lost tonight, it was lost in Kaunas, in Prague and courtesy of Mr Blom at Hampden Park last month. I didnt have the benefit of seeing tonight's game but more recently, I do believe we are improving and getting at least some passion back .....
  8. 2-0 in both games now .... unless us or the Lithuanians score 3 its all over !
  9. the math is simple now, even if the task is not .... we need to beat the Spaniards ! Czechs now 0-2 up in Lithuania courtesy of a 2nd minute penalty converted by Kadlec and a 16th minute Rezek goal.
  10. erm, no. You may only vote once but it is not one shareholder one "equal" vote, if it were, why bother buying more than one share ! David Sutherland has a large number of shares and his one vote is worth roughly 30% of all votes, if he gets another 21% holding to back him (not normally an issue) then anything can be pushed through. Dont you remember some of the vociferous exchanges between him and Dougie at previous AGMs or EGMs while the rest of us - with our piffly little 250 shares each - just sat around and wondered who would blink first ?
  11. Other than the "bollocks" comment which was a response to a poster starting the personal bullshit and having a go at the moderators rather than a moderator having a go at anyone - ie. the opposite of what you seem to be suggesting - can you show me where any moderator has sought to deny a poster the right to express their opinion in this thread? Can you show me where I said that the moderator "has sought to deny a poster the right to express their opinion", I just thought that post #11 was having a go at people that up until that stage were just expressing their opinion. Didnt say that you were. However, I will explain my comments to bring some clarity and closure to the off topic portion of this discussion ... you said 'having a go at people for having some doubts about this is ludicrous in the extreme' and went on to say 'I would have thought Moderators understood that the purpose of a forum was for people to express their opinions'. To me that sounds like you are saying that it is the moderators who started having a pop at the regular posters when the reverse is true. This thread was ticking along quite nicely with a reasoned discussion and no personalisation of it. Post #11, whilst perhaps disagreeing with a number of posters, did not name anyone, and did not abuse anyone, it was just an opinion and perhaps some frustration on the part of the poster. The 'naming' started at post #23 when that poster thought to throw in an unnecessary reference to the moderators and tar all of them with the same brush. The sad part is that the actual points made in that post that were relevant to the discussion were actually valid and it would have stood on its own without the personalisations, but by personalising it, it turned this thread, like so many others into an absolute shitfest. If you read my posts #23 and #33 you will see exactly where I believe the blame lies, and I will say again, it is a shame that this is the case because any valid points made by that poster (and there are usually a few) are often lost in the cloud of personalisation that accompanies every post .... I will also add one final thing to this comment, and that is to point out that moderators (or admin) are only moderators when actually moderating or helping ensure the smooth running of the forum. When they post, they post their own personal opinions the same as any user, and you can agree or disagree with those opinions. Like every other poster on this site they may respond "more strongly" than someone would like at times and if so, they are subject to the same rules as other users in terms of having posts deleted or receiving warnings ... so lets put this side conversation to bed and get back to discussing the actual subject ! I (personally) think he made a mistake getting rid of Munro and Duncan - as posted by myself last week, but he has to live with that and get on with things. I am happy he has a new contract as I do believe we are on the up. Yes we are at the bottom, and results are not as good as we might have hoped, and I understand why some people question the announcement, even if I disagree with them. However, as noted in my post on the "Keep the Faith" thread I also think he has had a lot to deal with this season that hasn't helped us so overall I am happy to see him sign a new deal. I also had not thought of AbsentFriend's point, which is a good one too ... A lot of managers seem to get the chop during the season and Butcher has had a recent record of doing quite well so may be in demand if jobs were available. We may be sitting at the bottom at the moment, but he did take us back up at the first time of asking, and we did well last season in the SPL ... our current league position would probably be ignored by any potential employers as our last few games have shown an improvement in form .... I would also say the idea of not giving a contract because it would cost more to sack him if he is on a longer deal is bogus too. ICT - as a rule - do not sack managers. Yes we sacked Brewster V2.0, but he was the only one (officially at least - Baltacha was 'mutual consent' at the end of a season). Pele left for Aberdeen, Robbo left for Hearts, Brewster(V1.0) left for Dundee United, and Charlie resigned .... TB is not getting sacked anytime soon, and probably not even if he were to get us relegated ... the merits of that can be argued, but I think its fairly certain. I also dont think Brewster would have got sacked if it were not for two things ... a lot of bad feeling about him taking the Dundee job first time round, and a lack of charisma and personal PR in dealing with the media and the fans ... for the most part TB has both eating out of his hands, especially when things are going well.
  13. Bollocks. The ubiquitous Bollocks phrases. Golden bollocks, Grande bollocks, dogs bollocks, dougals bollocks, bollocks dougal. When does you fishing permit expire Dougal. Looks like you were'nt disappointed Scotty , 1 poster dares have an opinion and the personal insults soon start ! Indeed ... the discussion was going quite nicely with many opinions expressed in a reasonable fashion and then rebutted by others with differing opinions. no harm, no foul, and no petty bullshit. There was therefore no need for one poster to ruin a post that might have contained several perfectly valid points by personalising it and insulting other peoples opinions, even if they were the opinions of moderators ..... I also see it as somewhat ironic that he says he is not scared to have an opinion then seeks to deny and denigrate others from having a different one ..... anyhow, lets see if we can get back on topic ....... this is not what the thread is for and I stand by my comments in post #21 .......
  14. I agree Marks and this thread is a good example - up to now - of one that IS balanced. Quite a few in favour and just as many against or asking questions about it, with most giving opinions and valid questions or reasonings for their viewpoints. Despite the fact that I disagree with about half the comments on this thread, it is quite refreshing to have a balanced one that hasnt descended into personal slagging matches or abuse ........ but give it time, I am sure it will get there !!!
  15. [caption id="attachment_4792" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Mo & Terry"][/caption] New two-year deals for Butcher and Malpas The Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC management team of Terry Butcher and Maurice Malpas have been offered, and have accepted, contract extensions which will keep them at Tulloch Caledonian Stadium until summer 2014. Butcher and Malpas would have been out of contract next summer and the club board have moved to avoid any uncertainty over their future. Executive chairman Kenny Cameron said: ”Terry and Maurice have done an excellent job for this club and we're delighted that they have put pen to paper on new two-year deals. "It is important to have continuity at a club like ours and this extension will allow the management duo to plan for the future while signalling to the playing staff that Terry and Maurice are committed to the club going forward. "Our present league position did not come in to the directors' thoughts. It is important to take a longer-term approach and we want Terry and Maurice to be a key part of this club's ongoing journey. We recognise the quality input of the management team and we have faith in their ability to further drive forward the club in playing terms. "Negotiations were concluded fairly swiftly and we feel sure that our supporters will be pleased that this issue has been put to bed. We look forward to Terry and Maurice continuing to give opportunity to young local players as part of their first team strategy." Butcher and Malpas joined Caley Thistle on January 27, 2009, on 18-month contracts. They steered the club to the First Division championship in 2009-10 and and in April, 2010, they agreed new two-year contracts. They guided Caley Thistle to seventh place in the SPL last season, the club's joint highest finish. Terry Butcher said: ”Maurice and I have become extremely attached to this club, and so many fine people in it, and we're very pleased to sign the contract extensions. We enjoy living and working in the Highlands and we relish the spirit and support of what is very much a community club. "Caley Thistle have won the admiration of many in Scottish football for their ambition and achievement with limited resources. This is a very special club and a key factor in deciding to sign the extension has been the strong support I have had from the board, led by George Fraser and his successor Kenny Cameron. "This season we've had the worst injury crisis I've ever seen at any club in my entire career, but everyone has stepped up to the mark and has shown tremendous strength and character. "We've given lads like Nick Ross, Gavin Morrison, Shane Sutherland and Graeme Shinnie their chance in the first team over the past 18 months to two years and they have shown great potential. Further down the line, in our youth development system, there is no shortage of local players whose promise excites us. "Continuity is essential to build and retain a successful squad and the fans can be sure this will be our priority over the next two and a half years."
  16. great news IMHO. Makes life easier for TB to negotiate with players when he himself has committed beyond the end of the season. Guess that also means Richie Foran will end his career at ICT !!!

  18. every little helps ....... As mentioned earlier, anyone putting money into ICT is not doing it to make a profit or to 'asset strip' the club. We dont make a profit and we have little or no assets ... for me, that leaves the motive for investing in the club - by anyone - as being 'philanthropic' and likely based on being a supporter of the team. ?250k may not be a lot in football terms, but for most of us its a few years salary so it is not insignificant !!! We all wax lyrical from time to time about how we would put money into the club if we won the lottery or Euromillions etc, well it seems that this group have a few quid and are putting their money where our mouths are ! I know nothing about the who or why involved in this consortium but between our current board and our major shareholder I am pretty certain they would turn down any offer that gave them a bad vibe ...... like the porn guy a few years ago for example ! I await the full details with cautious optimism
  19. landed a few big ones this weekend IHE
  20. - that is a perfect description of today's performance from Tade. Andrew Shinnie gets Man of the Match from sponsors and Beeb commentators agree.
  21. Tade scores the one that deflects off him missed the target three times but scores when the target doesnt miss him

  23. ok - closing this thread now - we have done enough chasing and enough cajoling for payments ..... The list has 52 people with 3 unpaid. The unpaid ones (3) are now officially removed from the sponsorship membership so the final figure is 49. CTO will pay the shortfall and we will sponsor all three items After some discussions, it was suggested that players be sponsored as "CaleyThistleOnline Supporters" rather than "Innes Bar & Internutters" as we have had zero contribution from the bar and have no reason to advertise them on that basis. The final item (Rossco's boots) will be named as "CaleyThistleOnline.com" as we have paid the majority of it but any gift from the club will be distributed randomly to one of the sponsor member in the same way as the others ........ If anyone has any questions or comments regarding sponsorship in this thread, please send me a PM.

  25. Message from Club: Our Under-19s play Keith in the Second Round of the Scottish Youth Cup at Tulloch Caledonian Stadium on Sunday 2nd October with a 2:00pm kick-off. Admission is free, so come along and support our youngsters.
