Keep the faith
Its undoubtedly a bad start, 1 win in 10, and sitting at the bottom while the traditional 'bottom feeders' who we might expect to be there amongst us are grabbing some points that may prove crucial later. The only season that started worse was 2007/08 when Charlie lost the first three games and promptly resigned (Butcher this season lost two and got a draw in the third) but even in 07/08, after 10 games between Christie and Brewster at the helm to start that season we had a record of W4 D0 L6. currently its W1 D2 L7. It also has to be said that Brewster that particular season (07/08) did OK to begin with but later in the year went on a streak of 1 win in 13 that included 7 straight defeats and still kept his job .... it wasn't until the following year that he was sacked after getting 2 wins in 11 between Nov and January. I can see why "the natives are getting restless" as "1 win in 10" is in the same sort of territory as the numbers mentioned above, but currently, and as crazy as it may seem to some I am not overly concerned. Not burying my head in the sand, but confident that TB/MM will turn the corner. In other words ..... I BELIEVE and here is why ...... (sorry, its long winded !!!) I think Butcher has been hit by a four-cornered 'perfect storm' of troubles and we will come through it in the end ..... some of the storm is of his own creation, some of it just unfortunate. 1. Squad Turnover: I do believe he was right to release a lot of the players he did at the end of last season but I disagree with the release of Munro, Duncan and perhaps Sanchez. Russell Duncan is the type of player you want in there battling and doing the dirty work right now when we are not doing so well and I feel our defensive woes would not be so prominent if we still had a central defensive partnership of Tokely and Munro, even if Munro was still 'hoofing' which may not be pretty to watch, and is not be the preferred option for Butcher, who wants us to play it on the deck, but most times its effective. Sanchez also had something and I hoped we would see the best of him this year .... Some of this opinion may be sentimental, but even 1 year contracts for the trio would have seen us have less squad woes I feel. 2. New Players/Young Players: Hand in hand with releasing a raft of long serving players is the problem of getting a group of new players together and making them into a cohesive unit. Individually I think most of his signings are good, but we have yet to see them gel and work together the way ICT teams in the past have. As much of a negative as this point is, the upside is that when they do click, it should be good to watch. Having so many new players was never an ICT trait in the past so I am speaking from bitter experience of watching Toronto FC for the last 5 seasons on this aspect. TFC has gone through more than 100 players in those 5 seasons (ICT is about 180 in 17 seasons by comparison) and the same applies ... there have been many good individual players but when the team on the park from one season to the next has little continuity, or even the team from game to game (in TFC's case) then its hard to build momentum from season to season or even game to game. This week TFC were virtually eliminated from the MLS playoffs and tonight may see them exit the Champions League if they don't get a result against Pumas Unam of Mexico, but despite all of the disappointment, most fans can see coach Aron Winter trying to rebuild and repair the damage of previous seasons, move the club forward, and also encourage youth by having many younger players in the squad who play regularly (but not every game). No-one is seriously calling for his head, they can see the progress. I think Butcher is trying the same ... look at the age of our squad, look at what he has done in shipping out older players and replacing them with players still in their teens or early 20s ... he is trying to refresh an aging squad and keep the quality, and there is certainly some quality about many of our younger players. However, doing this is a balancing act, our young players are good, and we need them, but relying on them too much can be folly as they dont have the experience or guile that older players do, and can suffer from burnout, which brings me back to Munro and Duncan ... Tokely, Munro, Duncan, Foran would have been quite a nice spine of experience with youngsters fitting in around them but right now we perhaps dont have that ..... TFC is the same. For me, the 'stars' of the season have been a 19 year old Ecuadorian winger called Joao Plata and 22 year old defender Richard Eckersley (on loan from Burnley) but until TFC signed Torsten Frings for the midfield and Danny Koevermans to play up front, the guile and experience was not there. Their signings were too little too late for this season but they signed multi-year deals so hopefully TFC will come out of the starting blocks next season ready to perform from day 1. Butcher doesnt have the luxury of waiting until next season, but hopefully he is looking at his options for January already and perhaps seeing what he can do to strengthen the squad. 3. Injuries: While Butcher had a lot of control over the first two corners of the 'perfect storm', no-one can really argue that he hasnt been hamstrung by injuries? If it were all training ground injuries you might argue the case but a lot of ours have come in games, and a lot turned out to be long term. He has not been able to field his first choice team this season (whatever it may be) and for two games he wasnt even able to list more than 5 subs !!! 4. Lack of Money: Again, another thing that Butcher has no control over really. As we saw with the accounts, the club is not making a profit. We may not be in as dire straits as some clubs, but year on year we are making a loss and that is unsustainable. As the biggest cost within a club is its playing budget then you know that TB has to fight for every pound he gets, and he wont get every pound he asks for. A lot of comment has been made of loan signings or short deals, but unfortunately that's the market we (and many other clubs) operate in. We need to strengthen several areas of the team, but quite simply, we do not have the money to shop for the best talent, we have to unearth gems either from lower leagues or from the youth ranks or by sweet talking bigger teams into letting us have a promising player who can gain experience. TB was quite good at this when he was at Motherwell, and with the amount of decent youngsters in our side now, I think he is doing the same at ICT. It wont win us the title, but when it clicks we should be alright .... it may also help with finances as promising youngsters may be sold on to other clubs.

Celtic looking into standing area
I would hope that ICT would be one of the clubs to vote in favour of this should it get that far ..... the Germans have shown it can be done, even to the extent of still being compliant with all seated rules for UEFA competitions ...... could common sense be about to break out ?

Dunfermline fan in racist incident
Glad to hear it .... Sounds like DAFC handled this pretty well. No place for the vast majority of '-ism's in football .... plenty of ways to tell an opposing player he's crap, or to wind them up without having to add race/colour/religion/nationality or anything else as an adjective within the sentence !!!!

Munro & Duncan Testimonial Dinner
[caption id="attachment_4704" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="© CaleyJags.com 2011 (click to enlarge)"][/caption] There have been significant rumblings on the forums and elsewhere regarding a Testimonial for former Caley Thistle stalwarts Russell Duncan and Grant Munro Although we dont have details of any forthcoming match as yet (we will of course publish that when we do) ... we can pass a few more details regarding the dinner to be held in November. The dinner will be held at the Drumossie Hotel The date is Saturday 12th November A table of 10 costs £600 or individual places can be booked for £60 The speaker on the evening will be George McNeill and the band will be the Ann Dixon Group. Further details can be obtained by emailing Barry Wilson at the following email: [email protected] Grant Munro Grant was signed on an "S" form and was part of the Caley Thistle first team squad for 13 seasons. For his first three seasons he was a youngster attempting to make the breakthrough. He only made a total of 10 appearances between August 1998 and August 2001 and was also loaned out for part of each season (to Fort William [98/99], Clach [99/00] and Elgin [00/01]) as manager Steve Paterson sought to carefully develop his talents. However his break came in season 2001/02 where he made 22 starts for the club and by the end of season 2010/11 he had racked up a total of 367 appearances for ICT (352 starts) and scored a respectable centre half total of 17 goals. As a youngster he developed a good partnership with Bobby Mann and when Mann left at the end of 2003/04 season, Grant became the rock at the heart of the ICT defence, first with Stuart McCaffrey and then as one half of probably the best central defensive partnership ICT have ever had alongside Darren Dods. Debut (squad): 4th Aug 1998 Debut (played): 2nd Jan 1999 50th appearance: 13rd Nov 2002 100th appearance: 27th Oct 2004 200th appearance: 3rd Mar 2007 300th appearance: 24th Oct 2009 Last Game: 14th May 2011 First Goal: 16th Feb 2002 Russell Duncan Russell came to ICT from Aberdeen in the summer of 2001 but it was not his first visit to the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium. He had previously captained the Scottish U-16 team here in a 5-1 victory over England in 1997 ! Russell was a bit of an enigma in terms of fan appreciation. Many saw him as an "unsung hero" who often failed to get the credit he was due, whilst others would bemoan some of his performances and recount each and every missed pass. However, it is a fact that ICT results with him in the team tended to be better than when he was out of it .... His importance to the team can perhaps be gauged by looking at his appearance statistics. In 10 seasons with the club, through the span of 6 different managerial regimes, Russell never played less than 29 games in any season ... thats someone who the manager knows he can rely on !!! In the end, Russell made 353 appearances for ICT (318 starts) and scored 11 goals. Debut (squad): 4th Aug 2001 Debut (played): 4th Aug 2001 50th appearance: 28th Sep 2002 100th appearance: 17th Jan 2004 200th appearance: 25th Nov 2006 300th appearance: 31st Oct 2009 Last Game: 14th May 2011 First Goal: 13th Oct 2001

Will we be upstaged again
Question is whether Lennon will rest a few for this game and look to dish out the hiding on Saturday rather than tomorrow ..... this is the least important cup, and albeit arrogant, they may figure beating County is 'relatively easy' and sending out a full squad to take three points against a frequently difficult opponent at the weekend is more important and justifies a weakened team for this game .... This is also very valid and may counteract what I said above .... a strong team, rip County a new one as payback for the Scottish Cup and also to ease the pain of the weekend ... they may figure that even with a strong team out for this game, they will still be in good shape for the weekend ..... so really .... I havent got a feckin clue !!! I do know I want Celtic to win this one !!! not because of any Celtic bias or hatred for County but because if County win then Celtic WILL rip us a new one at the weekend if they get beaten by Rangers then County is successive games ! If County can help us out with a few hard knocks to any first teamers that are playing then even better .... no lasting injuries, just enough of a dunt to keep them out of action until Sunday or Monday ;)

worst league in the world
Oh I don't know IHE. When watching Toronto FC each week it's a fair old rollercoaster too ..... 4-2 away win one week against a team we hadn't ever beaten, followed up by a 4-0 loss to Mexican team in CONCACAF Champions League then a nailbiter of a finish to beat last year's MLS runners up 2-1 on Sat. 6 league wins all season, 12 draws and 12 defeats and down near bottom of MLS. 4 games to go in MLS and 3 in Champions league and still a chance to progress in both. A coach sticking with a system that "will work in the end" (which I think it will ... MLS rules/policies mean its harder to rebuild a team but he's getting there), a couple of dodgy defenders that are a little better than the other dodgy ones on the squad, and what has to be close to the most inconsistent refs on the planet I swear some weeks it IS like watching ICT !!!!!

Away Day Travel - CELTIC
This is the first time we have added this thread, which is loosely based on our matchday threads .... and just for clarity I wanted to explain a little of the rationale behind it .... Every week we get asked by Supporters Club, Supporters Trust, and (often) the Ticket Office to highlight details of the forthcoming away games...... Until now we have had a separate thread for each request and all are pinned to the top of the forum. As most site users know, we don't like having too many pinned threads so I decided it was time to merge all these separate travel and ticketing threads into a single pinned thread for each away game. not only does that cut down the number of pinned threads every week, but it also serves to give supporters all information about an away game in one single thread. It is then up to the supporters themselves to decide which bus they may want, and what to do about their tickets ..... Realising that not everyone travels from Inverness, or may not travel by one of the buses, we have also left a section at the bottom to add any travel deals people might find and want to share with other users ... we will happily highlight them at the top of the thread if you add details inside the thread .... We also have no objection to users adding to this thread with the roll-call or 'where to meet' info but as we dont normally pin the "roll-call" thread, thats up to the site users, we wont force you to use this thread for that .... we'll just see how these new travel threads develop and adjust the guidelines based on that ......

The ICT recipe to success
ICT had a plan (the road to premier league football) and a clear vision of where we wanted to be. Others have wallowed in their own mediocrity. Maybe they tried many years ago but we were new, gathered momentum and reached heights we only hoped for. Main ingredient In our success IMHO was getting thebest years of Steve Paterson's managerial career.

Dundee Utd -V- Inverness CT - Preview
Caley Thistle go into this week's game at Tannadice hoping that a killer touch can be added to improving performances that saw the CaleyJags take all three points against Kilmarnock and a share of the points against Hearts in the last two games. The Hearts game was especially frustrating as they were there for the taking, but that's football for you .... This week's preview comes from the pen of regular contributor Davie and he somehow manages to bring back William McGonagall, an old photo of Maurice Malpas and his uncle Harry ! Over to you Davie...... [caption id="attachment_4678" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="Saturday's hosteltry of choice"][/caption]The trouble with ghosts seems to be that they always come back to haunt you. I’ve no real objection to that – it’s their job. It fair perturbs yer equilibrium though, when they turn up mob handed, which was why I felt decidedly perturbed when I spotted Sir William Topaz etc. and my uncle Harry at the end of my bed. I jumped. “Davie, how are ye?” said the bard, “It’s that time o’ year again” That explained both of their retro adidas Dundee United tops. I’d never seen Harry in one of them or outside the snug on a setterday, and said so. “What are ye doin wi him?” I enquired. “I’m tryin tae understand that boy o’ mine – I wiz never intae football and he’s a ragin Arab. Could he no play snooker or something? It’s weird.” No quite as weird as livin’ in Kirkcaldy on a voluntary basis, I thought. McGonagall looked bored. “What’s happened to your team? There’s none o’ them left” I gave him the standard explanation. Some of them were getting’ on a bit. They left. Some wanted more money, they left. Some girned too much, they left. We brought others in to replace them, younger and better but they got injured. So we had to improvise, and we have. Terry Butcher says that we are getting there, after all we have some new guys you won’t know about: David Davis – no relation to Dickie Davis, came from Wolves. Good debut last week. Aiden Chippendale – winger, he can “outstrip” any Arab on the park. Gregory Tade – forward, once described as having five lungs, two hearts and no brain. Has danced in the streets of Raith and started scoring. [caption id="attachment_4679" align="alignright" width="109" caption="Maurice Malpas - Tannadice Legend"][/caption]Greg Tansey – Liverpudlian bloke with his own two man fan club (I met them on a bus) Roman Golobart - Plays a bit like yer Davie Narey used to when your team wore those jerseys; he’s prone to the odd faux pas, so probably now terrified of guys called Terry or Mo. They should all play on Saturday, and there are more of them, but we’ll leave them for another preview. “That’s a bigger change than when your old man went on the wagon” said Uncle Harry, when Wullie butted in. “Did you say Chippendale? When did you start signing the ungodly and unclothed”? I sighed, I should have known this would come from a man who tried to moralise Dundee and unsurprisingly failed. Harry just lit up another fag. United are in the same boat really, said the bard. Gomis gone, Bauben gone, Goodwillie gone, Russell out, Severin out. It’s a sorry tale, but needs must and so must John Rankin. Both sides are anchored at the wrong end of the table, with one point separating them and something has to give on Saturday. Matches between the two sides are traditionally close (apart from those in any way involving Craig Brewster) and Saturday shows every sign of being the same. “What’s aboot yon stripper you’ve signed then?” said Harry. I sighed again, and the Bard looked as if he was about to wade in. “We’re a family club” I said: [caption id="attachment_4680" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="Poet ... allegedly"][/caption]“And, in conclusion, I will say without dismay, Visit the jaggies without delay, Because the football is a school of morality, And hasn't the least tendency to lead to prodigality”. “Have I heard that before?” said McGonagall. “Probably”, I replied, somewhere around 1884.

ICT Fifa 12 Player Ratings
For all these footy programs they usually have volunteers .... they try to get fans of each team to submit info but if they cant get them, then fans of other teams will help out (or hinder). Its all very subjective. I used to do it for one publisher, cant remember which game it was now as it was about 10 years ago, but it was not FIFA or Football/Championship Manager which to my mind have always been the big two for either action or strategy based games. Seem to remember that all i got was my name buried in the credits with all the other 'researchers' somewhere.

NEW INVESTMENT IN ICTFC
Attendance levels and percentages based on local or regional populations are all smoke and mirrors as far as I am concerned .... bottom line - whether punching above our weight or not - is that a 3500 average crowd (accurate or not - and I agree its probably not far off) is not enough to sustain an SPL team on an ongoing basis just like similar figures are not enough to sustain other 'small' teams. For me, there are two key areas ...... IHE and others got it right earlier in the thread when talking of increasing income and reducing expenditure ... those are the two, unless of course we get someone obscenely rich who runs ICT from their petty cash ... but would that still be ICT !!! Reduce Expenditure ... I think the club are trying here. Relegation saw swingeing cuts at the club and although staffing and other expenditures have increased again, I dont think they are anywhere near the pre-relegation levels. Some costs are inevitable - having an U19 team for example is mandatory in SPL I think - but if we can keep a lid on the costs we are able to manage then that will help. I think we are better than some here. Many at the club dont take a wage - directors for example - and the club has, over the last two or three years embraced the idea of allowing volunteers to help without being suspicious of ulterior motives ..... Increase Income ... This is the biggie for me, and the one where we can perhaps encourage club and fans alike to contribute to the ideas. As far as I am concerned, there are two parts to increasing income, one is at SPL/SFL/SFA level by making the game more attractive to the paying customer and the other is at a local level. At a central level, the governing bodies have to find a way to maximise club incomes. More sponsors, more money is one route but the SPL isnt exactly top tier for most global advertisers. However, Friday night football, and reducing the league to 10 and other ludicrous ideas is not the way to do it. Why not ask the fans what they want? Standing Areas? better treatment from stewards, better quality of refereeing? all affect the enjoyment and all affect the desire to go to games from those who may not be classed as 'diehards' and it is by encouraging the 'part-time' supporters to come along more regularly that you will increase attendances and income. At a local level, it is finding ways to get things done more cost effectively, and trying to grow and develop other revenue streams outside of a matchday .... aggressively market the conferencing and functions facilities ... I think Gringo Jr mentioned something about having the Kingsmills free for parties and stuff ... maybe adjust that a little ... not free, but the more people you have at a function, the less it costs ... Upstairs at the Hayloft did that decades ago ... if you got 100 people in, and they took a load of cash at the bar, your function was free, if not you paid for room rental and the rental of the disco. Also, if we could get them built then pods at the corners of the stadium for offices or something so there was regular rental income ... more concerts, etc ... I am sure there are hundreds of good ideas that dont cost a lot (excluding the pod idea) and might each bring in a few hundred or a few thousand quid over a year .... and it all helps !

Lennon / Juanjo
Presumably the referee would have commented if the video incident was not the full incident !!! The video footage is available (somewhere) and from my recollection the cameras covered the whole incident unless Juanjo is alleged to have headbutted him earlier .... the SPL rescinded the card so basically, Juanjo could sue for defamation if he wanted !
