Fan cleared of Lennon assault !
Well, I guess this is really the crux of the whole case .... did the jury believe the Hearts man or did they not ? If they believed the security guy then I guess they decided that calling Lennon that name was not religiously prejudiced which would then open up the debate to say that certain songs would be allowed again as this case proved the word 'fenian' used in this context was "acceptable" under the eyes of the law. If they didnt believe him, then I wonder why? Was he not credible? or was it perhaps that the defence may have made the case that in the atmosphere and noise there is no way someone could have heard anything ... and the jury went with that ...... i think the latter is more plausible. Either way, I think a lot of blame must rest with whoever made the decision to keep the religious prejudice tag on the charge when it may have seemed shaky. According to various reports, the accused was prepared to plead guilty to the breach charge and even to the assault charge ... if the religious aspect was removed ... that was the only part he was actually denying. Allowing that would have saved a lot of time and money in terms of court costs etc and you could be relatively sure he would have got a stiff sentence (maybe 100+ days to cover the time already spent in custody) and probably a lovely little FBO for 2 or 3 years. But in the end, just like the example in my opening post, I would say someone over-reached and the only 'result' the cops got was a conviction for breach and not-proven for the rest. It will be interesting to see what the sentence will be given the time spent in jail and the high profile of the case (made even higher because of other non-related events happening to Lennon that season) ..... I am guessing it will be pretty much the same as he would have got anyway ... 100+ days in jail and a football banning order.

Fan cleared of Lennon assault !
A Hearts fan has been cleared of assaulting Celtic manager Neil Lennon after an Edinburgh Sheriff Court jury found the case against him not proven. [name redacted] had denied his actions were aggravated by religious prejudice. He was found guilty of breach of the peace by running onto the pitch at Hearts' ground Tynecastle last May and shouting and swearing at Mr Lennon. [name redacted] will return to Edinburgh Sheriff Court at a later date where he will be sentenced. Full Story http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-14732110 Find it hard to believe he got a "not proven" when half the world saw the footage ! Was it a case of the authorities once again "over-reaching" in terms of the charge by tagging on the "religious prejudice" aspect and then not being able to prove that (or to agree to remove that additional part of the charge when offered a guilty plea) ... or was it an ill informed jury ??? Reminds me of the time I was on a High Court jury in an attempted murder trial .... the jury felt the prosecution over-reached with the charge and while (I think) we would have been happy to find the accused guilty of assault to severe injury or permanent disfigurement or something like that, we had to come back with a not-proven on the attempted murder as it was clear - even from the victim's testimony - that there was no intent to murder, just a fight that got way out of hand and where the loser was classed as the victim and the 'winner' ended up as the accused ... as sometimes happens ... the Police/PF had gone for the severest charge they could and left no room to consider a slightly lesser charge.

Against All Odds - Online for All
Caley Thistle book republished on CTO with new extra chapter The story of the formation of Inverness Caledonian Thistle Football Club has now been republished free on this site - with a further chapter added to reflect the past history of both Inverness Thistle and Caledonian FCs from the clubs' origins in the 1880s. Charles Bannerman's "Against All Odds" was originally published by the club in 1997 but the book sold out several years ago. Now Caleythistleonline ('CTO') has stepped in with an offer to host an online version with an extra introductory chapter about Inverness's days in Highland League football.. The extra chapter reveals that controversy goes as far back as the 1880s and takes the story through both world wars to the likes of King Willie's days at Kingsmills Park, the great Caley teams of the 1980s, the Howden End and the Half Time Harriers. "I've regretted quite a lot over the years that I didn't say more about Caley Thistle's Highland League pre history and of course the book has been out of print for quite a while now," said the author. "Then during the summer yet another request for the book on Caleythistleonline kicked off a series of events. The upshot is that CTO, through its co-publishers Scott MacKenzie and Don Johnstone, is now carrying an electronic version of the original book plus the extra chapter which I've just written, with free access. Scott made the very valid point that new fans and those too young to remember the tumultuous days of Caley Thistle's formation will always be appearing and wanting to know where the club came from. Now they can do so with an added bonus." [caption id="" align="alignleft" width="225" caption="Click Here to go to download area"][/caption]Regular CTO contributor Neil MacKenzie stepped in with an offer to scan the entire original and that has now been placed online along with the additional chapter. "Against All Odds" can be accessed, free to CTO members and non members, on this site. Caleythistleonline was founded by Scott in 1994, has over 2200 active members and receives over 4 million page views a year. Don came on board in 2003 as a co-publisher, both to help with the day to day running of the site, and also to help drive it forward and take it to the next level. "Caleythistleonline is a highly popular website which is an established focal point for ICT fans across the world and I'm very happy that the book, now extended, has become available once again thanks to Scotty and Don," said Charles. "I've been a regular follower of the site for ten years now so am especially pleased to be associated with it in this way." As detailed in the original book, the creation of a merged football club in Inverness playing at the Caledonian Stadium was the product of a fraught three years between 1993 and 1996 which saw controversy, high drama and brinkmanship at venues as diverse as football grounds, meeting rooms, solicitors' and Local Enterprise Company offices and even the appeal court ... and it has now emerged that there is even controversy over which is the oldest club in Inverness. "Whilst researching the new chapter over the summer, I discovered claims from both Thistle and Caley that they were the oldest clubs in the town from back in the 1880s," said Charles. "So the disagreements of the merger period were nothing new and there was one occasion when both clubs seem to believe they won the North Cup! But I'd better not say any more and leave people to read this all for themselves on Caleythistleonline."

Caley Thistle chief Fraser to step down
Whilst you are correct in assuming our major shareholder could indeed pretty much veto any investment based on the number of shares held, I think that is an overly simplistic view. There's a lot more involved and it comes down to personalities, vision and plans as much as money ..... He has said more than once that he would be willing to walk away if the right person or people came along who could take the club forward ... and call me naive if you want, but I do believe that general sentiment. What would happen to the shares, or what he would seek in terms of compensation to relinquish them is another subject, but in terms of control, I think he has been, and continues to see himself as a steadying influence and he genuinely wants whats best for the club in his eyes, even if we, the fans, have not always agreed with what that is. Its not philanthropy, he is a very astute businessman, and his companies have benefitted from their association with ICT, but I would say it has been mutually beneficial thus far as ICT has certainly been pulled through and out of some sticky spots with him at the helm or even in the background .........

Caley Thistle chief Fraser to step down
Here's a list of our chairmen past and present ..... John ('Jock') McDonald 1994/95 --- selected during merger talks given his 21 year history of involvement with the SFA, he lasted until the end of our first season in May 1995 when Stadium Director Dougie McGilvray took over. McGilvray was chairman from May 95 to January 2000 when the board was "restructured" with David Sutherland taking over. Sutherland's first stint as chairman lasted from January 2000 to April 2002 when the board resigned en-masse after shareholders rejected a 'debenture issue' designed to raise ?150K. I was at that meeting, and from my recollection, the opposition to the issue was led by a former chairman and another major shareholder who never sought to be chairman at any point. The issue was resolved later in the month when Tullochs increased their holdings in the club to 51% for ?500K. when this was ratified by other shareholders, Ken Mackie was chosen (by Tullochs) to be chairman. Part of the deal with Tulloch (ie. Sutherland) was that Tulloch would be allowed to appoint 3 directors including the chairman for a period of five years - or at least that is my recollection of it. Ken Mackie was the first "Tulloch" chairman and was in the post from May 2002 to November 2005. At the AGM in 2005, shareholders voted to allow the club to revert to a private company allowing Tulloch's to increase their holdings by ploughing in another ?400K and David Sutherland came back as Chairman for the second time. David Sutherland insisted at the time that he did not really want to be in the chair and he only stayed there for a short time ... until August 2006. He relinquished the post in favour of Alan Savage who was coming in and making an investment in the club. At the time, Sutherland said he would like to transfer the Tulloch holdings to a new Inverness Sports Trust and top it up with a further 200K donation. the club made a pre-tax profit of ?220K that season ! It should also be noted that this was also the season where the Members' Club (with its 10% voting rights) was dissolved and the voting rights passed onto the Supporters' Trust. Savage was chairman from Aug 2006 to April 2008 when he stood down with immediate effect. It was well publicised that the chairman and "major shareholders" did not see eye to eye on certain things and after he stood down, our current Chairman George Fraser was selected as his replacement. I think I have got the potted history mostly correct, and from writing this down, I think I am also correct in saying that the shareholders have never actually "elected" a chairman. We have either rubber-stamped a replacement at an AGM when the current chairman of the time has stood down down, or we have "ratified" the choice of the board at an AGM if the chairman has moved on during the rest of the year ... we have never actually had a choice between different candidates. Having said that, I think for the most part we have had the right chairman in place at the right time for most of our history .... we may not have agreed with all their actions at the time, but looking back with hindsight does give you some perspective. JM helped ease our entry into the league DM navigated the treacherous waters of getting the stadium built DS1 helped reduce our debt and make it manageable first time round KM was quietly effective and extremely professional during our promotion wrangle with the SPL/Partick DS2 finished the job of making our debt go away in his second stint AS brought a fresh pair of eyes to the job and some good ideas GF has been - for the most part - in the background as others at the club get on with things. Supported manager in push for instant promotion back to SPL after relegation. so who next ............ and what will they bring to the table.

Caley Thistle chief Fraser to step down
Accounts will be sent out to shareholders prior to the AGM .... bottom line though, based on what (little) I know, and also taking previous years reports into account, is that finances for 'smaller' teams like ICT are always going to be on a knife edge .... early cup exits (especially in the Scottish Cup), relegation, reduced crowds, and various other factors will always see us (and others) steer close to the wind and although we may not have an overdraft, we also have little or nothing in the way of assets either so unless Scottish football suddenly gets an influx of cash via sponsorship or some other windfalls (like the European payments discussed a few weeks ago) then a lot of teams will walk that same tightrope. On the flip side, it should also mean that those who declare themselves as interested parties in terms of injecting cash or maybe even taking a larger role or a controlling interest in the club are doing so because they are genuinely interested in ICT ... they certainly aren't doing it for the immense profit to be made !

ICT's Performance This Season
OK - Slight shot across the bows to those making and taking it personally Laurence has as much right to come on here and express an opinion as anyone else ... just as we have the right to tell him that we believe he is suffering from a humongous dose of verbal diarrhoea ... and because we are intelligent and articulate ICT fans who have followed our club through thick and thin, we are even able to do that without getting overly personal and lowering ourselves to the level shown in the very first post in the thread where we are called "the worst fans", or by telling him he is not welcome (something mods/admin will decide if it ever comes to that). [/end of sermon] Laurence .... Cant figure out if you are a troll or if you are actually serious !!! If trolling then well done, you certainly caught a few big fish in your net. If serious, then I think you need somewhat of a reality check about the game in Scotland which is dying on its feet due to years of mismanagement at league management level and the imposition of rules and penalties on fans which have killed any atmosphere, or virtually any attempt to generate one at matches....... I am and always will be an ICT supporter. It doesnt matter to me whether we are in the HFL or the SPL or somewhere in-between (although quite clearly I do want the team to compete at the highest level possible). As Mantis said, its part of our life, not a lifestyle choice. I would go further and say it is also not an accessory to be wheeled out when playing one of the big teams or going on an impressive run. I happen to live 3500 miles away, and am currently a season ticket holder at Toronto FC in MLS but that doesn't stop me supporting ICT. I run this site with the help of others, and have done so since 1994. Moving across the Atlantic neither killed my passion for MY club, nor did it diminish it. Instead of going to ICT games, I now get up early to listen to them on the internet. Instead of meeting up with mates in the pub before and after games, I now discuss it online with them, and instead of having a season ticket I now try to ensure that I can serve the club in other ways like donating my time and professional expertise to help with their website, or sponsoring players (again with the help of others) through the site. Thats what real fans of their club do, they support the club in whatever way they can ... because whether we are good fans or bad fans in your eyes, whether moaning or complimenting things, we are still fans of the club and will still be fans tomorrow, next week, next month, next year ..... and beyond. You mention "atmosphere" and to an extent I do agree with you on that point, especially as I experience 20,000+ at each TFC game I attend and the atmosphere is normally electric. However, I do not agree with where you point the blame and feel your opinion suffers from an ignorance or lack of comprehension of just how things have evolved here (ie. Scotland, not just Inverness) over the past several years. From the time we moved into the TCS until I emigrated in 2003, I had season tickets right above the tunnel and my friends still sit there. In those times we were indeed surrounded by "sweetie rustlers" but we did get chants going and the atmosphere was as good as you get "with a Highlander" (we are naturally more reserved than some others). If we stepped out of line or went over the top, a knowing look from the stadium manager (directly below me in the tunnel) would allow us to dial things back on a friendly level. However, on recent trips home, those same friends no longer chant, sing or throw out barbed one-liners to the opposition managers or subs .... not because they don't care, or because they are bad supporters, but because over the ensuing years clubs have been put under pressure to clamp down on things said, shouted, sung, or chanted and fans are routinely threatened by over-officious stewards (or in the past, Chief Executives) with Football Banning Orders. Fair enough for offensive stuff such as religious, ethnic, racial or other slurs, but it also has the effect of killing "banter". If you think that is just at the TCS then you are sadly mistaken. Seems like you have experienced a single season of the roller-coaster adventure that is ICT and have decided it is not for you. Fair enough, that's your choice, but please, just as I have said to our posters at the beginning of this post, that they should not get personal with you or tell you you are not welcome ... don't feel you have the right to come on here, stereotype every single one of us a sh*** supporters and basically say we are not worthy of your support. That is pompous and arrogant and there is only one cure for that ...... Service 28 or 28a to Dingwall (http://www.stagecoachbus.com/uploads/service28draftaug2010.pdf)
