There are at least 10 reasons why it’s a bad idea for a manager and employee to call themselves friends, including: 1. It will create a perception of favoritism. Even if you think you’re being 100% fair and un-biased, you’ll always be subject to being second guessed. 2. You may not even realize it, but other employees are probably letting your “friends” get away with more, thinking that you’re going to protect them or side with them. 3. If you allow yourself to get emotionally attached to one employee – for whatever reason – but not another, those emotions will consciously or unconsciously influence decisions around raises, layoffs, assignments, promotions, etc…. 4. If you see an employee as a “friend”, you’ll have expectations of that employee that are unrealistic or inappropriate for an employee. “Well gee, a friend would never do that, or should do that, or should tell me everything, etc…” 5. On the other hand, your friend employee may have expectations of you that are unrealistic or unprofessional, such as sharing confidential information, or always giving them advance notice, or doing special little “friendly” favors for them. 6. As a manager, part of your job is to judge your employees, to give constructive feedback, and sometimes to discipline them, even fire them. Does this sound like something a friend would do to another friend? 7. Although this threat never seems to scare managers, yes, it’s true – you and company could get sued. You are exposing yourself and your company to the risk of discrimination lawsuits. Don’t think it never happens… it does. That’s why HR people are so crazy about the issue – they are trying to protect your backside. 8. ALL employees need to complain about their bosses now and then, even the best managers. You’re kidding yourself if you think you’re immune from this. However, if you see your employees as friends, you’re more likely to take it personally. 9. Friends let their hair down outside of work and sometimes do silly things with each other. Managers are supposed to set examples and be role models. So, as a “manager-friend”, you’re either going to be a boring uptight, friend, or an unprofessional, immature manager. You pick. And oh by the way, your own manager may not appreciate those pictures of you and the gang all over employee Facebook pages. Can you socialize with your employees? Or go out for a drink? Sure, but just make it a habit to stick to one drink and be the first to leave (to give them time to complain about you), or at least not the last to leave. 10. Some employees may find your attempts to be friends as personally intrusive, or inappropriate. They might even find your “advances” to be creating a hostile work environment, and again, exposing yourself and your company to that old lawsuit thing.- Should We Replace The Manager ? Poll
The bottom line is that we have to do something quick. And there simply HAS to be some clear statement of intent made by the board. The team selection on Saturday will be very, very interesting. I reckon it may sink or save Foran. This is the biggest "must win" of HIS career. Just looked at my match report after the Hearts game in August: Well were do I feckin start - Lets look at this comment first - Inverness Caledonian Thistle manager Richie Foran: "I don't think it was a 5-1. We had more chances on goal today than we had in the previous three games, but you've got to put the ball in the net." It could actually have been 25-5. We were slaughtered. It was embarrassing. 44% possession but NO width and NO penetration. 13 shots on goal and 7 on target - for on target add weak or directly at keeper. 7 corners all aimed at Gary Warren. Fer fecks sake. "They had that bit more belief when they had their chances. That's what we lacked." And where do they get that belief from. Shure Rice was barking orders but that is lukewarm. Foran looked like a feckin mannequin. Take the feckin suit off and give them laldy. Be more of Foran the nasty, snarling player, forget they were team mates and give them some good old Irish bollockings. "We had too many players underperforming as well. I've got to take a big part of the blame for that as well - I picked the team, I picked the tactics, I picked the training through the week." Fair enuff - Neither Butcher or Hughes would have said that. But the tactics are WRONG. BUT we don't have any real replacements. I thought "If it was me - how could I change it ?" - Only by being ruthless and perhaps playing the yoof. "These players have proven over the years they are top players, but I'm not getting the best out of a few of them at the moment, so I'll take the blame for today." That is a fellow player talking - a buddy - a friend - not a manager. The blame will rest with Foran in the end but we have some of his old buddies playing cards in the feckin trenches. There are some who frankly are not playing for the shirt becos they probably think - "well who else is there". Apart from Warren and Tremarco NOBODY else looked like they were giving 100% - please refer to Grumpometer becos there is NOTHING to smile about !!- Hamilton -V- Inverness CT

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear - Desperate, embarrassing stuff - especially following the Partick interview. That puts us into a relegation battle now - forget about top six, we are in a relegation battle now. "Some of our players have not got the bottle, they showed that today. We might have been the better side in the first half and their keeper pulled off a great save from the penalty, but some of our boys are hiding and we are in for a fight now. "I told them straight, 'I can see who is bottling it, I can see who does not want to take the ball'. It is not them all, I thought Billy Mckay was excellent but it makes it a massive game for us now on Saturday against Dundee. "The majority of them fight, but a few now can't handle the occasion and where we are in the league, but they are the ones who need to have a rest now and I need to bring in the ones who are ready to battle and ready to fight. "That was out worst defeat of the season. I'll take my share of the blame, but the players now need to stand up and be counted." On second thoughts I would love to see who Foran picks against Dundee - and whether he is seeing the same players as we are ?????? I have my doubts.- Hamilton -V- Inverness CT
We have to act NOW. Foran has to go TOMORROW and Rice with him. I really doubted his managerial potential but wanted him to succeed as he is a legend on the pitch. I cant stop myself from recalling how I felt after the 5-1 drubbing at Tynecastle. We are NOT the far adrift. We do have (on paper) a squad capable of survival. But it is crystal clear that Richie has lost the dressing room and the club base. Can only see Charlie Christie being capable and available at such short notice.- Hamilton -V- Inverness CT
