Dundee United -V- Inverness CT - Report

Teaser Paragraph:
Inverness Maintain Early Form

Inverness remain top of the table with another impressive performance and another three points. This time it was Dundee United that suffered at the hands of Billy McKay who scored after flicking the ball over Dillon and calmly lifting the ball beyond Cierzniak.

Inverness held on fairly comfortably against an inept United team that boasted the return of David Goodwillie to their ranks. However, in truth, one glaring miss apart from the prodigal Goodwillie, Inverness could and should have increased their lead and sealed the win sooner before United staged a late rally. By ten to five it was three points and another clean sheet, Inverness' best start to a campaign in the top tier.

Capital Caley was at the game along with the usual suspects and he has this report for us........

This was possibly one of Caley Thistles comfiest 1-0 victories.  The score line doesn’t reflect the true difference between Inverness and Dundee United.  ICT were superior in every part of the park.  A larger than usual and very vocal travelling support descended on Tannadice with confidence high after destroying the Midden 3-0 in the opening game of the season.  The Arabs had got off to a stuttering start with a 0-0 draw at Firhill on the opening weekend.

Many of the ICT away day regulars gathered at the Centenary Bar (although it isn’t the Centenary Bar anymore!) The new management separated the home and away fans in different bars and lined the doors with bouncers. I don’t think we’ll ever be quite as intimidating as the guys in that awful football movie with a Hobbit in it though.

ICT started off the game strongly. From that moment they never lost their grip on the match. James Vincent was the first to threaten as his left foot shot went just wide. Graeme Shinnie could have opened the scoring minutes later as Billy McKay slid the ball across the box only for Radoslaw Cierzniak to save at his near post. ICT took a deserved lead after 20 minutes. Forans ball into the box found McKay who lobbed the United defender before lobbing the keeper. It was a classy goal that would prove to be the match winner.

Shortly after, Richie Foran received a caution for a foul on Gary Mackay-Steven. It was a high footed challenge but judging by his reaction, it was clearly an accident and a yellow card was the correct decision. United First Team Coach Darren Jackson has a Derek Adams moment as he seethed from the touchline before being calmed down by the referee. ICT were playing some superb football. For all the superb football played, United were crumbling in midfield. They looked disjointed and lacking in confidence. They did manage a half chance towards the end of the first half when Stuart Armstrongs shot from outside the box fell into the arms of Dean Brill.

Richie Foran and Ross Draper were bossing the midfield and this carried on into the second half. ICT were winning and holding possession with even greater ease during the second half. The Arabs fans were frustrated and boos soon broke out around the ground.  Midway through the second half there was much bemusement as a seagull landed on the pitch and seemed to be following the ball. That was until it felt the full force of a Gary Warren pass! The injured seagull soon left the pitch, although it may have been more effective than the United midfield. Ex-Caley Thistle midfielder John Rankin was substituted on the hour mark for United, much to his frustration with yet more United seethe evident.

United nearly gained an undeserved equaliser when on loan ex-Arab David Goodwillie fluffed his shot after Gary Mackay-Steven beat David Raven down the wing. That was a rare thing on Saturday for sure! With 15 minutes left, Danny Devine came on for David Raven after the right back picked up an injury. Liam Polwarth came on for the impressive Aaron Doran with a few minutes left and looked just as creative as he did in pre-season. Caley Thistle should have doubled their lead towards the end when Graeme Shinnie tackled Calum Butcher and set up McKay. McKay then crossed in to Shinnie with an open goal, however the United defender got a small touch on the ball just before he shot. The ball went agonisingly wide.

At full time, there were cheers around the ICT support as Terry Butcher performed his famous away day celebration. We out played, and out thought the Arabs. Every man had a good game. The midfield was key but noticeable stand out was Ross Draper. The big midfielder got to everything. He was tackling and winning left right and centre. It’s early days yet, but this could shape up to be a very special season.

We are top of the league!

Dundee Utd -V- Inverness CT - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
United Preview

After coming out of the blocks in striking form, Inverness travel to Tannadice this Saturday to take on Dundee United at the scene of an amazing game last season. If this game is half as entertaining as that fixture then we will be in for a treat, but let's not afford United a three goal start this time.

Capital Caley has been running the rule over these two contenders and has this preview ready for your eyes ahead of the second SPFL fixture of the season

Caley Thistle head to Tannadice top of the SPFL Premiership.   As we look down on the rest of the teams, there is confidence within the support that we can stay there for another week.  However Dundee United will be a stern test and look dangerous going forward.  Last season ICT scored 8 goals against the Arabs in the first two fixtures between the teams, with the most memorable one being the 4-4 draw at Tannadice.  United had been 3-0 up and ICT clawed them back only for the Arabs to convert a last minute penalty.  ‘We're gonna win 4-3’ were the chants from some of the fans whilst 3-0 down.  I’m sure this tactical sing song spurred the players on.

Unfortunately the last time the two teams met, a late goal from the Arabs resulted in a 2-1 defeat and proved pivotal in scuppering our European ambitions.   Revenge on Saturday in the City of Discovery will help us to forget about that though.  Many of the usual faces will be travelling to Dundee with the Centenary Bar on Clepington Road a meeting place for many of the Caley Thistle fans wanting a pre match pint.  However It will be sad to not see Mikey Diamond making his usual appearance with his big flag.  He will be missed at the games.  There’s a new security company in charge at Tannadice now.  The old Securitay company raised eyebrows in the past so hopefully the new lot are a bit more fan friendly!

United kicked off their campaign with a 0-0 draw at Partick Thistle.  If it wasn’t for the heroics of the Partick goalkeeper United could have scored a few.  It was a tough test for Manager Jackie McNamara who had to endure a barrage of loud tutting and disapproving looks from supporters of his former club.  David Goodwillie will be making his first appearance at Tannadice since returning to his former club.  He’s an incredible acquisition for the Arabs that could be the difference between top and bottom six.  Former Patick Thistle Captain Paul Paton is another summer signing that could cause problems.   United also added Calum Butcher to their squad during the summer.   Butcher certainly caught the attention of many fans with his heavy challenges during the Partick Thistle game.  A no nonsense tough defender, no relation to Terry though!

ICT are likely to go with the same line up that destroyed the Midden last week with Dean Brill looking like a fine replacement for Antonio Reguero.  We all need to know something though.  Has he ever heard of Tain?  The last time Caley Thistle won their first 2 games was back in 1998.  We finished runners up in Division 2 that season.  A strong start to the season will get us dreaming of a league position that a year ago we would have thought impossible.

CapitalCaleys prediction:-  The fixture has produced some very high score lines in the past.  We like to score 4 against United!  Both teams look dangerous going forward with Billy McKay and David Goodwillie the danger men for ICT and Dundee United.  0-0.

Inverness CT -V- St Mirren - Report

One down, thirty-seven to go

Inverness got off to the best possible start with a second half blitz to blow away St Mirren at a blustery Inverness, although that never looked likely after a terse first forty-five where neither side looked capable of taking control of the game.

A quick fire second half treble from Inverness settled the game with James Vincent scoring from the spot. Aaron Doran capitalised on a defensive blunder and who else but Billy McKay completed the job to give Inverness their best ever start to a season at the top table. St Mirren's day got even worse with 10 minutes to go when David van Zanten was red carded.
Dean Brill started his first competitive game, but the back four were familiar faces. Vincent was added to the midfield alongside Draper, Foran, Doran and Ross with McKay in his lone striker role as per norm.

St Mirren had new boys David Cornell, Danny Grainger and Gary Harkins on from the start to compliment their experienced squad that ended last season with the League Cup in their trophy cabinet.

And it was the Paisley side that made the early running with Gary Harkins prominent from the start, forcing Brill to keep out a couple of efforts from the former Partick man. Aaron Doran almost got his season off to a flyer after he was threaded through on goal by Vincent but his angled drive was wide with the Caley Jags players screaming for a corner.

Marc McAusland snatched at a ball laid back to him some 25 yards out but his half volley sailed over the bar, whilst at the other end some neat interplay between Ross and Shinnie ended with Ross firing a loose clearance just over the crossbar from the edge of the box.

A free kick some 25 yards out saw the closest action around the Inverness goal as Goodwin smashed the ball off a diving Dean Brill's left hand post and away to safety and that was as close to a goal in a gritty first half which gave no indication of what was to come.

Half-Time 0-0

The second half was barely underway for three minutes when David van Zanten blocked a shot from Vincent ilegally with a hand, and after van Zanten received a yellow card Vincent neatly slotted home the opener. No sooner had the fans sat down in their seats than they were up again, Doran pouncing on a sloppy clearance after McKay hassled Cornell and Doran side footed the ball home from the edge of the box.

But the entertainment did not stop there and the quick-fire treble was completed within eleven minutes when Raven swung in a tantalising ball and who else but Billy McKay nodded home. Doran did well to free Raven for his assist and he scores when he wants did the rest with his napper.

Meekings could not emulate his Charlton heroics and skied a bouncing ball well over from inside the box and David van Zanten eventually saw red after 80 minutes, but the result was way beyond St Mirren by then and Inverness deservedly started the season in great style. The Buddies on the other hand, would appear to have a bit of work to do.

Full-Time 3-0

An excellent start to the campaign makes a welcome change for Butcher's boys and it was good to see Vincent and Doran get on the scoresheet early. Billy McKay will continue where he left off and with the defence along the same lines then it could be another bright season for Inverness.

MotM from Inverness fans point of view has been taken by newbie James Vincent who could well fill Andy Shinnie's shoes, with Richie Foran showing why we miss him when he is not present with a solid display.

So, it's one game gone and only another thirty-seven to go in what looks like being another entertaining season.

Inverness CT -V- St Mirren - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Ready for the off

A new season has crept up on us and a new scribe has joined the editorial team at CTO to whet your appetite for the big kick off. Kirishima will get our season rolling as he previews the Buddies visit to Inverness, a place where the Paisley side have done reasonably well in recent seasons. Inverness appear to have had a more satisfactory pre-season than the Buddies and look like they are raring to go, but the season starts in earnest this weekend and we can take nothing for granted against a side buoyed by their success in last seasons League Cup Final.

There are a few new names to get our heads around so without further ado, I'll let Kirishima tell you all about it.

This historic, first ever SPFL Scottish Premiership match for Inverness Caledonian Thistle will kick-off at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium against St. Mirren at 15:00 this Saturday. Another merger, I hear you say as the Scottish Premier League and the Scottish Football League join forces for the betterment of the game North of the border.

Inverness have yet again been strengthening their ranks and welcome Torbjorn Agdestein, Curtis Allen, Dean Brill, Adam Evans, Ben Greenalgh, Carl Tremarco, James Vincent, Marley Watkins, and Danny Williams to the team.

While Inverness finished off their pre-season beating English Championship side Charlton 1-0 at The Valley, St. Mirren were beaten 4-0 by the same opposition in Spain at the Marbella Football Centre (Inverness would clearly rather have Marsella than be in Marbella). National newspapers have been taking note, with The Herald calling it a “perfect send-off to a productive pre-season” and The Scotsman running the headline: “Few likely to dismiss Inverness’ prospects this season”. With the first game at home, optimism is high around the Capital of the Highlands.

St. Mirren will not be coming to make up the numbers in any sense. St. Mirren, Scottish Communities League Cup holders, had a w-d-d record against Inverness last season. Experience is the chosen option for Danny Lennon; new signings Danny Grainger and Gary Harkins add to captain Jim Goodwin, Paul McGowan, and former internationalists Gary Teale and Steven Thompson. The latter has cited a determination to better last season’s lowly finish, positivity around St. Mirren Park, and believes creativity will be the key to their season this year. St. Mirren however has defensive and attacking concerns leading up to the start of the season. A disappointing pre-season saw a further four goals shipped to Morton and QoS, and the Buddies have struggled to sign a striker in time for Saturday, after a failed loan bid for Celtic’s Tony Watt.

Physios on both teams have work to do; Curtis Allen has had a “nightmare pre-season” and misses out due to a knee-injury suffered after just his third day at the club. Marley Watkins also misses out due to an ankle injury from the friendly against Forres. Connor Pepper is out after injuring his groin at Elgin. Stalwarts Esson and Foran however are expected to be available for Saturday. Scotland U-21 midfielder Kenny McLean misses out for the visitors. 29-year-old Kevin Clancy will referee for the afternoon in Inverness.

Terry Butcher will be keen to avoid a repeat of last season’s start when seven games had gone by without a win before the team got into gear for their highest ever finish in a season. As this is Inverness’ historic first home game in the all-new Scottish Premiership, what better time to better that?

***Latest Team News***

Inverness manager Terry Butcher has pulled off a late smash and grab in the transfer market and has signed Norwegian u21 forward Torbjorn Agdestein on a six-month contract. He had been plying his trade at Brighton where he had been farmed out to Bath City. At six foot one, he would make an ideal target man to feed Billy McKay and that option appeals to Butcher who may be tempted to throw him in at the deep end. Agdestein scored in the NoS cup draw at Brora last midweek, the young side losing 3-0 on penalties to a very much ICT experienced Highland League side. Keeper Dean Brill looks set to replace injury prone Ryan Esson should he fail to fully recover in time.

Danny Lennon would love to have cup scoring sensation Conor Newton back in his squad for the new season and his Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew reckons it's not beyond the realms of possibility that Newton could return to Paisley to learn his trade in the SPFL. The season's start will probably come to soon for injured duo Jon Robertson and David Barron, and Danny Grainger is not guaranteed a start as he needs to show his new gaffer that he is fully match fit, although that could just be one of Lennon's smoke screens.

Charlton 0-1 Inverness CT - Pre-Season

Caley at the Valley

Inverness concluded their pre-season with a  1-0 win at Charlton Athletic in the Colin Powell Testimonial. It was a useful work out for both clubs with Inverness just having the edge and victory was rubber stamped when Josh Meekings scored a superb winner after a long run from defence, and a give and take ended with him angling the ball home.
One hundred and thirty two made the long trek to watch their team and they were rewarded with a resolute display and a super goal in the Capital and plenty of memories of the weekend away.
Immortal Howden Ender ventured South from Chorley to see the sights and he will have a match report for us when he recovers.
Didn't we have a lovely day, the day we went to Charlton, Riley and me, Zogg, GJ and Adie - well that was as good an away day as I have enjoyed in feckin yonks. RESPECT to Red Card for blagging the four hospitality spots. We saw more of Colin Powell than anyone else in the ground and the only negative was yon Jim Davidson constantly trying to sit with us and constantly asking fer photties and autographs. And feck me is Theo Foley still a hard man in his feckin seventies ?!!
Never did find the Pickwick but found Donview and a few crew members in the Rose of Denmark although we missed the Antigallican because of the EDL presence and simply flashed the kilts as we went past. Still we had to be sober(ish)and uphold the reputation of the club by hobnobbing in the Testimonial Suite. And the only thing that we can say about our accommodation and the environs in Woolwich Arsenal is feckin WOW. Saw more ladies of the night in one Woolwich pub than we suspected in the whole of Soho. I hope somebody on YouTube has posted the clip off Red Card trying to feed the beggars apparently lactose tolerant dog with a cheeseburger and our spat with the Ascot returning Finnish females and their fascination hats !!
Anyway to the game. That was as fine a performance in a friendly as I have ever witnessed from an Inverness team. We simply bossed the first half and Draper could have had a brace. We never really looked like conceding and the back four have really got it together. We played football throughout and a real passing game, although it was sideways, backwards and possession orientated at times. The second half was more even but again we always looked the more probable to nick it - and we did - although I thought that Dorans cross was out of play but it was a great finish from Meekings who had started the move with an interception in his own half.

The away support was as vociferous as ever and it appeared that our Tremarco song was more welcomed than our Richie Foran ditty. And was it not great to see the 30 year plus/plus choir pumping out the Ultras signature tune without the feckin effort of jumping up and down. I would love to know what Terry said to the players at the end of the game as he appeared livid - or perhaps it was because we had finished off the red wine in hospitality. But Terry did give Colin Powell an exclusive bottle of Glenfiddich.
As fer the tactics it was mainly a 4-2-3-1 formation switching although we ended up with Polworth and McKay up front in a traditional 4-4-2 at the close.
MEEKINGS just pinched by MotM award for his contribution to the winning goal but was equalled by Warren otherwise.

Charlton -V- Inverness CT - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Into the Valley of Woolwich

A new season beckons and our pre-season climaxes at the Valley, home of Charlton Athletic in a game marked down as the Paddy Powell Testimonial.

Some intrepid Caley Jags Away day specialists have made the journey down to the big smoke, by road, plane, sea, air and alcohol to witness this final fixture before the season starts, and one Immortal Howden Ender has used his spare time on the journey to fill us in on the weekend ahead.

The lads from Dunfermline can help us out here..........Take it away The Skids......

Some punters have commented that away trips for pre season friendlies are both expensive and unnecessary. The faithful who have followed ICT to Fleetwood, Yeovil, Bath and Aldershot in recent times would probably unanimously disagree with that way of thinking. The trip to Charlton is undoubtedly a "jolly" to many of the away fans but it is also the first real "test" of this season for the team, an opportunity to see how the newbies perform at a higher level and against a considerably higher standard of opposition. It is also probably as good a game as we could get prior to the start of the league campaign and hopefully we will uphold the name of Scottish football. It is also however an opportunity for the surprisingly fair crew of ICT supporters living in Englandshire and allows them a chance to savour the TerryandMo away day atmosphere and not spend a fortune in doing so.

So why Charlton? Is it because of Sergei Baltacha who braved the merger days with Dougal and is now more known for his advert starring role for Compare the Meerkat campaign? Perhaps it is because of Mr Marsella and his contacts or perhaps there is a bond between our Tel Boy and the impressive and ever improving Chris Powell. Lets just hope that it is a fairly good testimonial turn out for Colin Powell who sounds like their answer to Tommy Cumming although Powell could play football as well as cutting the grass. There will probably be a strong Charlton outfit on display as there next outing is also a league start at Bournemouth.

One of the away side to look at for the future apparently is Jordan Cousins who has emerged in pre season and impressed in the win against Dagenham. New goalie Ben Hamer will also be out to impress his new club whilst Harriott in midfield will be cooking in this heat and striker Pigott will be jockeying for space. The "danger man" would appear to be Chris Solly who has been their player of the year award for the last two seasons.

Unfortunately there do not appear to be any Jocks in their squad so there will be a multitude of sassenachs on display. You would have thought that they would have been tempted to look North following the success of Christian Dailly who won their player of the year award in 2010 when he must have been in his early 50's !!

As fer ICT this will be my first opportunity to run the Smileymometer over the newbies and hopefully quite a few will get a run out and will survive the run down afterwards. I am hoping to be impressed by Dean Brill in goals as I suspect that he may be thrown in at the deep end sooner rather than later although witnessing the return of Esson would be an even more appreciated compensation. There are evidently a few others, many who have received encouraging reviews already, such as James Vincent, "Bob" Marley Watkins, "Golly" Tremarco and the Blue Peter kid Ben Greenhalgh (or however it is spelt) - perhaps there may even be a new Norwegian striker making his bow.

In many ways however it will be nice to go to a pre-season game when the majority of the starting X1 will be the same as the previous season and Terry, Mo and Steve can only be congratulated on that unlikely achievement - and lets hope that wee McKay continues to do his " Billy's Boots" impersonation.

Left the Costa Chorley in blue skies at Sunrise and just passing Crewe the weather remains glorious although the forecast for London is thunderstorms. Whatever the weather this is going to be yet another fun filled frolic for your truly - joining up with the Juanjo Away at Euston and hopefully to meet up with the Englandshire connections, old and new, in a variety of hostelries on the Woolwich Road, Oh and don't expect the report until tomorrow !!

CTO Player of the Year 2012/13

Teaser Paragraph:
Congratulations to Andrew Shinnie, who becomes the thirteenth winner of the annual CaleyThistleOnline Player of the Year award.

The race to become the CTO Player of the Year went right down to the final day clash with Ross County, but Shinnie picked up points in the matches against Motherwell and Dundee United to take an ultimately decisive four point lead over Billy McKay which he didn't relinquish.

Shinnie is a very deserving winner, having scored 16 goals for the club this season, won his first Scotland cap, and been nominated for the SPL Player's Player of the Year award as well.  His wonderful form has earned him a three year contract with Championship side Birmingham City, where hopefully he'll make a big impact.

In winning the trophy, he follows in the footsteps of Bobby Mann, Barry Robson, Stuart Golabek, Liam Keogh, Ross Tokely, Craig Dargo, Barry Wilson, Don Cowie, Ian Black, Jonny Hayes, Ryan Esson and Roman Golobart.

Andrew's brother Graeme, meanwhile, was Player of the Month for May, his first such award this season.  He received 76 votes, 6 ahead of his sibling, with Josh Meekings in third.  Meekings' strong finish to the season means he ties for third in the overall standings with Aaron Doran.
