Christie takes Top Award

Teaser Paragraph:
Charlie Christie is the Manager of the Month for October.
A win aganst Rangers, an amazing comeback against Falkirk, and a goalless draw with St Mirren meant that Charlie has seen the  team's unbeaten streak stretch to 7 games and he deservedly takes the award.
The SPL have issued the following press release ...
Charlie Christie has been awarded the Bank of Scotland Premierleague Manager of the Month Award for October.
In this short Premierleague month Inverness Caledonian Thistle recorded one of their most famous victories, staged an amazing comeback and extended their unbeaten run to seven matches.
Following their win at Ibrox at the beginning of the month, by a single Graham Bayne goal, Caley Thistle looked a shadow of themselves at home to Falkirk as they faced a two goal deficit. An inspired double substitution by Manager Christie changed the match and a late goal flurry from Craig Dargo & two free-kicks from John Rankin ensured an unthinkable 3-2 victory.
The month ended with a draw at Love Street, which saw the Highland outfit move up to joint 4th place in the Bank of Scotland Premierleague.
The award was voted for by a judging panel from the Scottish Media.

SPL ROUND-UP
Again, only 4 games took place on the Saturday; with the SPL fixtures now spread over 3 days. It was the same fixtures that took place on the opening day. Craig Brewster’s reign as Dundee Utd manager ended quicker than Santa Clause could save him. He lasted from Janurary to November so he didn’t even survive a Christmas or a whole year showing that he couldn’t break the ICT curse. Anyway back to last Saturday, Dundee Utd were thrashed 5-1 at the Falkirk Stadium. I really feel for Malky Thompson who was happy at Inverness and now has no job. The highlight was Anthony Stokes hat-trick which won him young player of the month for Falkirk. If that wasn’t enough for a weekend, Hearts were told by Romanov that the whole team would be put on the transfer list if they didn’t win against Dunfermline. The game ended 1-1 but no Hearts players have left this week. Although with the comments of the chairman and a caretaker manager who needs an interpreter on the touchline, Hearts fans aren’t very confident. Motherwell became the second team in a row to leave Ibrox with something. Boyd scored for the Gers but Kerr equalised for Motherwell, giving the Well a valuable point against a lacklustre Gers performance. At Love Street, St Mirren and Inverness CT fought out a 1-1 draw aswell. Dargo got his 5th goal of the season for Inverness in the first half but Kean deservedly equalised in the second half. Inverness are now 6 games unbeaten in the SPL which has won Charlie Christie manager of the month for October. To Sunday, and Celtic came from behind to beat Kilmarnock at Rugby Park. Nish opened the scoring but Nakamura and Miller got the 3pts for the Celts. And on Monday night, Aberdeen scored a last minute winner with a potential goal of the season for Scott Severin. Aberdeen won the game 2-1 after Hibernian had been in the lead through Killen. So in other words, not a lot happened last week!!!!!!!! PAST MEETINGS The teams have played a total of 11 times (7 League, 4 Cup) with 19 goals (5 Inverness CT, 14 Aberdeen) between them. Inverness CT: 0 wins (0 League, 0 Cup) Draws: 5 (4 League, 1 Cup) Aberdeen: 6 wins (3 League, 3 Cup)
SOME PREVIOUS MEETINGS 08/08/1998 (League Cup 2nd Round) INVERNESS CT 0-3 Aberdeen: In the first game between the sides it was a Billy Dodds hat-trick that gave the top-flight side the win. Inverness CT was a 2nd Division side at the time. 20/02/2000 (Scottish Cup 4th Round) INVERNESS CT 1-1 Aberdeen: After the excellent achievements of beating Celtic at Parkhead in the previous round, the gift was a home-tie against Aberdeen which was screened live by Sky-Sports. Bobby Mann’s header looked as if it would have taken the Caley Jags through but Cato Gunviet scored with 10 minutes remaining meaning a replay was to be played. Both scorers got yellow cards during the match. Aberdeen won the replay 1-0. 16/10/2004 (SPL) INVERNESS CT 1-3 Aberdeen (Pittodrie): With all the media hype about Aberdeen playing away at Pittodrie was a joke before this game. Inverness were paying Aberdeen £30,000 for the day plus Aberdeen didn’t need to travel to Inverness. And plus they still got the victory thanks to 2 penalties. Roy McBain got the goal for Caley Thistle which was a great goal.

FACTS BETWEEN THE TEAMS • All League meetings between the teams have taken place in the SPL. • Aberdeen are unbeaten in all fixtures between the teams. • The biggest win in the fixture was when Aberdeen won 3-1 on 16/4/2004 away to us at Pittodrie! McBain scored Inverness’s solo goal. • Inverness CT are currently on a 7 match unbeaten run. • Aberdeen have lost their last 2 away matches in the SPL.
PLAYERS TO WATCH Barry Wilson (ICT): The Caley Thistle right winger is a key member of the Highlanders side. He hasn’t scored since Inverness last played Aberdeen but his contribution is vital to the team. An experienced player, who, on his day, can still produce a few effective, runs down the right hand side causing defences many problems. He is looking to enter coaching after his playing days are over and hopefully he will join the ICT coaching staff. Lee Miller (Aberdeen): The ex-Dundee Utd striker has still to find his scoring boots at Aberdeen since his arrival on the last day of the summer transfer window. He currently has only 1 goal to his name and wants to get a run of goals going to cement his place in the starting eleven.FUTURE FIXTURES13th Jan 2007 at Pittodrie Stadium SQUAD Mark Brown, Jonathon Smith, Michael Fraser, Darren Dods, Stuart Soane, Ross Tokely, Guy Kerr, Richard Hastings, Stuart McCaffrey, Stuart Golabek, Grant Munro, John Rankin, Roy McBain, Zander Sutherland, Alan Morgan, Liam Keogh, Richie Hart, Barry Wilson, Russell Duncan, Craig Dargo, Gary McSwegan, Rory McAllister, Dennis Wyness, Graham Bayne Injured: Nobody. St Mirren 1-1 Inverness CT - SPL

ST MIRREN 1-1 ICT
Craig Dargo scores in the first half and John Sutton equalises in the second as the spoils are shared at Love Street. Caley Thistle Club Historian, Ian Broadfoot reports on the game.

28th October 2006  Love Street, Paisley  ST MIRREN  1 (Sutton 64) Team: Bullock, Millen, McGowne, Broadfoot, van Zanten, Brittain, Murray , Sutton, Lappin, Mehmet (Kean 59), Reid (Burke 59)
Subs:  Brady, Molloy, Mackay, McKenna & Smith
INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE FC  1 (Dargo 34)  Team: Brown, Tokely, Dods, Munro, Hastings, Wilson (Hart 70), Duncan, Rankin, McBain, Bayne (McAllister 87), Dargo
Subs: McCaffrey, Wyness, Soane, Sutherland & Fraser
Referee  M Tumilty  Attendance  4432  Man of the Match  info not supplied   It is a sign of the times that Caley Thistle came into this match as favourites and went home disappointed with a draw. Saints had taken all three points in Inverness on the opening day of the season but the visitors were now the form team.   It all started brightly for Caley Thistle, and they took a first half lead through Craig Dargo, but as time went on they were forced onto the back foot. Saints’ pressure led to an equaliser but after that the defence held firm and the 1-1 draw extended the unbeaten SPL run to seven matches.   Ian Black started his two-match suspension and Russell Duncan won the battle to replace him in midfield. Youngster Stuart Soane took a bench spot but otherwise the starting line-up matched the one that beat Falkirk last week.   Graham Bayne nearly gave the visitors a first minute lead with a 20 yard shot but it flew past the far post with ‘keeper Tony Bullock nowhere. John Sutton was a constant threat for the Buddies and in eight minutes Grant Munro did well to block as he shot goalwards.   Veteran Andy Millen should have done better for the home side in 16 minutes when he took a Billy Mehmet cut-back and somehow hit off target from little more than six yards.   In 28 minutes a long Mark Brown kick-out was flicked by Dargo into the path of Barry Wilson - he ran on and lobbed Bullock from the edge of the area but it went wide.   Caley Thistle took the lead in 34 minutes when Duncan took the ball off Hugh Murray in the centre circle and found Wilson on the right - his cross deflected off Millen to Dargo and the striker celebrated his 50th appearance for the club by sending a tremendous shot past Bullock for his fifth SPL goal of the season.   Half Time: 0-1   Caley Thistle had held their lead up to and after half time then a double substitution in 59 minutes gave St Mirren fresh impetus and set up strong pressure on the visitors’ defence. Stewart Kean and Alex Burke replaced Alan Reid and Billy Mehmet with Saints playing three up front.   The pressure paid off in 65 minutes after a free kick was cleared for a corner and Simon Lappin’s curling kick into the box from the right was headed home by Sutton.   While Saints continued to push forward it was not all one-way traffic and in 69 minutes Roy McBain and Dargo combined to set up John Rankin, but his shot deflected off Wilson for a goal kick. Richie Hart came on to replace Wilson and provide fresh legs for the final 20 minutes.   David van Zanten hit wide of Brown’s goal in 77 minutes and the same player shot over the bar with a minute left. Otherwise little troubled the Caley Thistle goal and Brown dealt comfortably with anything that reached him.   In the dying seconds substitute Rory McAllister became the fifth ICT player to be booked in a game that was anything but dirty.   Full Time 1-1   It ended with honours even and Caley Thistle moved back up to fourth place – a spot they held last week for 24 hours.

St Mirren V ICT - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Caley Thistle go to Paisley looking to gain a small measure of revenge for the opening day defeat at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium. With 3 league wins on the trot and unbeaten in 6, the Caley Jags will be hoping to come away from Love Street with all 3 points. Andrew Fraser previews the game.
St Mirren v Inverness CT Sat 28th October 2006 at 3pm Love Street, Paisley Referee: Mike Tumilty Others: Jim Lyon, Derek Clark (Assistants), Iain Brines (4th official)
Tickets: This match is all-ticket. Tickets can be purchased from outside the ground for both sets of supporters up until kick-off. TV-info: Live commentary on BBC Radio Scotland. Highlights available on Scotsport SPL on Monday evening ITV1 at 11pm. FIXTURES Saturday 28th October: Falkirk v Dundee Utd Hearts v Dunfermline Rangers v Motherwell St Mirren v Inverness CT Sunday 29th October: Kilmarnock v Celtic (Setanta, 2pm) Monday 30th October: Aberdeen v Hibernian (Setanta, 7:45pm) SPL ROUND-UP Last weekend began the Monday night football by Setanta meaning only 4 games went ahead on Saturday. Aberdeen overcame Dundee Utd to increase more pressure on ex-Inverness manager Craig Brewster. Mackie and Nicolson 2 was enough to secure a 3-1 for the Dons. Robson scored for Utd. Celtic narrowly beat Motherwell by 2 goals to 1. Zurawski and an own goal were just enough for the 3pts for the league leaders. McDonald scored for the Well. Kilmarnock stunned Hearts at Tynecastle with goals from Invincible and Wales giving Killie an unlikely win. The drama however occurred at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium. Falkirk went 2-0 up with a double from Anthony Stokes but an inspired half time team talk from Christie gave the Highlanders a lift with Dargo scoring on 70 mins. With 8 mins left Rankin scored his first ever goal for the club with a well placed freekick. He did the same 4 minutes later to give Caley Thistle an astonishing comeback to sneck the 3pts. Inverness CT are now 6 games unbeaten and in 5th. On Sunday another 3-2 scoreline in the match between St Mirren and Rangers. Rangers managed to pick themselves up after last weeks home defeat to Inverness with goals from Adam, Buffel and Novo. A Sutton double wasn’t enough for the Saints. On Monday, a comprehensive 4-0 victory for Hibs live on Setanta. Sproule, Benjelloun and a Killen double gave the caretaker manager Mark Proctor a chance of getting the job. After one round of matches, Celtic lead and Dundee Utd prop up the table. PAST MEETINGS The teams have played a total of 21 times (17 League, 4 Cup) with 62 goals (44 Inverness CT, 18 St Mirren) between them. Inverness CT: 12 wins (8 League, 4 Cup) Draws: 5 (5 League, 0 Cup) St Mirren: 4 wins (4 League, 0 Cup) A GAME TO REMEMBER For this weeks game to remember we take you back to the first ever match between the teams. It took place on the 10th of August 1999 in the Scottish Challenge Cup. Inverness CT won the match 1-0 thanks to an 88th minute Mike Teasdale goal. The attendance on the day was 1334. The teams were as follows: INVERNESS CT: Fridge, Mann, Tokely, Hastings, Golabek, Teasdale, Christie, McCulloch, Sheerin, Stewart, McLean. Subs- Robson, Shearer, Glancy. ST MIRREN: Roy, McLaughlin, Turner, Baltacha, Nicolson, Murray, Drew, Kerr, McGarry, Brown, Yardley. Subs- Mendes, Lavety, Ross. The referee was Garry Mitchell and there were no bookings on the day. Three Inverness players still play for the club and there is one who is now the manager of the club. FACTS BETWEEN THE TEAMS • All League meetings between the teams have taken place in the First Division so far apart from one. • Inverness CT have won all cup meetings between the sides. • Inverness CT’s Paul Ritchie is the top scorer in the fixture with 8 goals. Next is Dennis Wyness with 6. • St Mirren’s top scorer in the fixture is Yardley with 3. • The biggest win in the fixture was when Inverness CT won 5-0 on 6/5/2000. McCulloch got 2, with Xausa, Wilson and Bavidge all getting one goal. • The last meeting was on 29/7/2006. It was the first ever SPL game between the sides at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium. St Mirren managed to win 2-1 after Dargo heading Inverness infront. Kean and Sutton scored for the Saints. PLAYERS TO WATCH Ian Blacks replacement (ICT): Inverness will have to make at least one change to the starting line-up this week. Ian Black starts a two-game suspension and the competition for his place is tough. Russell Duncan has been made to give up his place to John Rankin this year and only made sub appearances in the SPL so far with two or three starts. He did well for us last season and he may get a chance this weekend. Liam Keogh is another hard working midfielder looking for chance on Saturday. Keogh has managed to come back from a lengthy injury spell to be in contention again. However, my guess is Richie Hart. The ex Ross County man came on as a sub last week and made a tremendous impact on the game. A player who has pace and a shot to trouble any keeper from distance. It’s good to see the healthy back up for just one place in the team but it is up to Charlie who gets it. Another option could be moving McBain into the middle and putting Morgan on the left but I think Hart will get the nod. Ross Tokely (ICT): We are playing St Mirren. Enough said. John Sutton (St Mirren): The brother of Chris Sutton has started to find his scoring boots in the SPL. He managed to score two goals last week against Rangers at home. His tally currently stands at 6 goals and will be looking to add to it this weekend against Inverness CT. FUTURE FIXTURES 1st Jan 2007 at Tulloch Caledonian Stadium Squad: Mark Brown, Jonathon Smith, Michael Fraser, Darren Dods, Stuart Soane, Ross Tokely, Guy Kerr, Richard Hastings, Stuart McCaffrey, Stuart Golabek, Grant Munro, John Rankin, Roy McBain, Zander Sutherland, Alan Morgan, Liam Keogh, Richie Hart, Barry Wilson, Russell Duncan, Craig Dargo, Gary McSwegan, Rory McAllister, Dennis Wyness, Graham Bayne Injured: Nobody. Suspended: Ian Black (6 cautions)

Inverness CT 3-2 Falkirk - SPL

Inverness CT 3-2 Falkirk  Caley Thistle looked down and out after Anthony Stokes had scored either side of half-time but a second half goal from Craig Dargo and a two excellent free kicks from John Rankin meant it was Caley Thistle who snatched all three points. ICT Club historian Ian Broadfoot reports from the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium

21st October 2006  Tulloch Caledonian Stadium Inverness Caledonian Thistle  3 (Dargo 70, Rankin 81, 85) Team: Brown, Tokely, Dods, Munro, Hastings (Wyness 56), Wilson, Black, McBain (Hart 56), Rankin, Dargo (Duncan 88), Bayne
Subs: McCaffrey, Sutherland, McAllister & Fraser
Falkirk  2 (Stokes 40, 51) Team: Higgins, Ross, Barr, Milne, Twaddle, Cregg, Thomson, O'Donnell (Stewart 90), Dodd (Gow 90), Stokes, Latapy
Subs: Lambers, Scobbie, Lima, Craig & Mountinho
Referee  Stuart Dougal  Attendance  3749  Man of the Match  Craig Dargo (ICT)       John Rankin’s first senior goals for Caley Thistle proved decisive as they helped turn a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 win.
Not surprisingly Charlie Christie stood by the same side that beat Rangers but things did not go right until major personnel and formation changes in 56 minutes. With three at the back and three strikers it was all-out attack and this paid off.
Not much happened in the first half but Falkirk, with Russell Latapy’s electric pace, looked more likely to score. Latapy hit over from 22 yards in eleven minutes then in 18 minutes he drove a 30 yard free kick just wide left. At the other end Ian Black shot over the bar in the early minutes, Graham Bayne did the same and Craig Dargo headed high in 33 minutes.
Falkirk’s Anthony Stokes looked to have put Falkirk in a winning position with goals either side of the break. In 40 minutes he raced in on goal from the right, Grant Munro slipped and he hit the ball under the advancing Mark Brown.
Half Time: 0-1
In 51 minutes Stokes did it again after a great Latapy build-up – Latapy ran across the box leaving defenders helpless then slipped it to Stokes who scored easily at the left post.
Five minutes later came the decisive changes. Richard Hastings was sacrificed for Dennis Wyness, making his 200th appearance, and Richie Hart provided fresh legs to replace Roy McBain. The new formation settled down and ICT started to make inroads on the Falkirk defence.
It all paid off in 70 minutes when Scott Higgins scrambled a Grant Munro shot for a corner on the right. John Rankin’s kick led to an almighty scramble and a Graham Bayne shot which Craig Dargo headed onto the bar. It bounced down over the line, the goal was given and Darren Dods hammered the loose ball into the net to make sure.
The crowd were now treated to one of the best 20 minutes of home action seen in a long time. With nine minutes left Dennis Wyness was brought down a yard outside the box and John Rankin took the free kick. He curled it low to the left, round the wall and in for 2-2. This was the midfielder’s first goal for the club and his second was only four minutes away.
Ross Tokely was brought down on the right some 30 yards out and this time Rankin sent the free kick high and left into the net for 3-2. There was no way back for Falkirk but they did throw on two substitutes for the two minutes added time.
Full Time: 3-2
Stuart Dougal blew the final whistle and the home team was cheered off the pitch. Three wins in a row and up to a heady fourth.

Clydesdale Bank confirmed

Teaser Paragraph:
As expected, the SPL have released a statement today confirming that the Clydesdale Bank has been confirmed as the new sponsor of the Scottish Premier League in a four year deal that is worth up to £8 million.
At a meeting of the Scottish Premier League Clubs at Glasgow’s Hampden Park Stadium today (19 October), Clydesdale Bank’s proposal was unanimously approved by the 12 SPL Clubs.
{josquote} "This is a phenomenal opportunity for Clydesdale Bank to show our support for Scotland’s national game" - Steve Reid, Clydesdale Bank{/josquote}Clydesdale Bank’s sponsorship will commence in July 2007 and represents a total investment of some £8 million over four years in the SPL alone. Working in partnership with the SPL, Clydesdale Bank will make an additional investment to maximise the value of this sponsorship for staff, customers and the communities in which it operates.
The deal was agreed following strong competition from a number of blue-chip companies over the past six months.
Steve Reid, Clydesdale Bank’s General Manager of Retail & Wealth Management, said: “This is a phenomenal opportunity for Clydesdale Bank to show our support for Scotland’s national game.  More people watch SPL football per head of population than any other nation in Europe. Taking the Clydesdale Bank name into every home in the country, our sponsorship of the SPL is all about investing in our business, our people, our customers, and in Scotland.”
Lex Gold, Chairman of the SPL, added: “I am pleased to announce that we have agreed a new four year sponsorship deal with Clydesdale Bank, starting in July 2007.  Interest in our sponsorship has been reassuringly keen and we are delighted to have agreed a new record deal with Clydesdale Bank, a blue-chip company. We look forward to working closely with Steve Reid, General Manager of Retail and Wealth Management, and his colleagues at Clydesdale Bank to make this work for all concerned. Following closely on the recent record breaking TV deal with Setanta, this highest ever sponsorship deal in Scottish football provides a sound platform for our clubs for the next four years.”
