Is 'E' really so popular?

I was watching a quiz show the other night when they asked the question "What is the most commonly used letter in the English language?". The answer given, and accepted as correct was the letter "E".

But is it really? Even setting aside the ever increasing use of text speak and it's tendency to drop vowels the ever increasing use of social networking sites seems to have brought with it new habits which would might mean the statistics might need a little revision.

For a start, the letter "X" which is currently ranked third from the bottom can be seen at the end of most communications...several times in some instances. Surely that would move the letter far further up the table than it is currently given credit for? Then you have "LOL" which seems to have a foot on both the TLA and Text Speak camps. Currently ranked mid table (11th place), you would think that the letter "L" must be due a promotion.

These are just examples that spring immediately to mind, I am sure others also exist....but nothing I can think of would suggest that "E" deserves to be holding the crown for most commonly used letter....certainly not if you take a true reflection of how the English language is communicated in this day and age.

I have no idea where the statistics are drawn from, but it would appear that currently used (and apparently accepted) tables are in need of a bit of revision.

Good pertinent blog. It will be a while until text speak is accepted. But language, like anything, evolves, if that means "see" becomes "c" or "are" becomes "r" so be it. It wasn't so long ago that "whom" and "thee" were commonly used, and i'm sure the literati back then bemoaned its fall. Language does not belong to any one time, only the majority.

Interesting blog CD. Did you know that there are 1,135 characters in the blog and 142 letter E's. So 12.5 percent of the blog is the letter E

    • We’ve been drawn at home to Lossiemouth on 6 August in the first round. If we win that we are at home to Strathspey on 20 August. In recent years, we have forfeited home draws and played the games away so that may happen this season too.
    • Popped down this afternoon to buy a ticket for Aaron Doran’s testimonial after three failed attempts to buy one via the e-link. Wasn’t going to miss giving Aaron the well deserved recognition for his long service to the club. One of the most gifted players IMO to pull on a ICT top.    That aside it concerned me a little my failure to get an e-ticket may have been experienced by others, who eventually just gave up. Result - fan for the day and income lost. Never done social media sites but expect hackers are ‘out there’ so that might trigger some access restriction? Just raising it as I’m sure it will be experienced by others when wanting to buy a ST or just a single match ticket. Don’t know what is possible to remedy or make it simple to get into the matches. Flares and security may have done it for cash turnstiles, but I can’t help feel it’s another turn off for potential fans (income).  PS looking forward to a long awaited ICT - RC derby again (even a so called friendly).  Finally - Thank you Aaron! bc

    • Aaron looking resplendent in his testimonial kit. Aaron recently spoke about his testimonial match and the challenging end to his time at the club. He expressed gratitude for the support from fans during his 13-and-a-half-year tenure, especially after his contract ended while awaiting surgery for a knee injury. Doran highlighted the club's lack of communication regarding his injury and surgery. “I have had two surgeries booked in by the physio, Dan (Cluett), for May 22 and May 29, and the club cancelled them both..." That led to a fundraiser organized by former teammate Shane Sutherland to cover the costs.  Time for us all to give something back to Arran to show our appreciation of his time at Inverness CT.
