The new manager thread
Still can't see why people are going for Henrik Larsson. A good player does not equal a good manager necessarily. He's basically a Swedish version of Chris Sutton when it comes to management. Great for Celtic but failed at management. What good is that?

Shinnie for Scotland
Nah, Berti Vogts tried that. We only saved face when Walter Smith brought in experience alongside youth.

The new manager thread
Seems to becoming a popular choice. Aberdeen have McInnes, Dun Utd have McNamara, Killie have Johnston, all young managers with ambition & potential to reach the top of the game, no reason why we cant give the gig to Hartley? Reminds me of Ian McCall, Billy Kirkwood and our very own Craig Brewster (amongst a whole host of others). All sought-after young managers in their day.

That rules me out too then

Shinnie for Scotland
And Bardsley is better than them all. But Shinnie does deserve a call up to be part of the wider squad IMO. Anyone else think Mulgrew is absolutely exceptional in that defensive midfield role? For years, he was a player in search of a position. I can't remember a player in the last, ooh, 15 years or so, that's looked so comfortable in that role. Looks even better than Paul Lambert and he won the European Cup (or whatever it's called next week).

Shinnie for Scotland
I don't have a problem with Rangers players being in the squad, even though they are in a lower division. SPL is worse than the EPL/ECL for instance but it shouldn't stop a good player getting in. Likewise, no problem with Kenny Miller playing a Canadian club. Diamonds in the rough and all that. That said, Shinnie deserves a chance.

SEVCO 5088 LIMITED - THE MYSTERY
Interesting? You are joking, aren't you?!? Only if you find commerce and company law 'interesting'. Nothing to do with actual football.

More successful as a coach than manager. Yet, driven to be a manager. Shame. Still, did well at Hibs, despite being hated for playing for Rangers. Couldn't happen now though

Paul Hartley. Most exciting manager in the lower divisions since...Danny Lennon? Ian McCall? It is a risk. Maybe worth taking but it could see us plummet too. Calderwood was managing last season. Not too long away at all. Shiels oversaw Killie's worst home record in over 30 years. Still think, long-term, he could do something. Yogi built a great side at Hibs. Just couldn't stop the slide, which makes me doubt him. Needs a top assistant. Sheerin's done well at Arbroath. Couldn't expect much more. That said, would we be considering him if he hadn't played for ICT?

Butcher's best and worst signings.
Robert Eagle had flashes of talent. No engine though. He wasn't far off Div. 1 standard - which is of course where we ended up. Stratford was worse, though tried hard, mind you. Simon King would still be a first pick today had he avoided the injuries that ruined his career. Unlucky rather than worst.

Butcher in Daily Record
We'll see if we're better off without him. Remains to be proven. Egomania is par for the course with winners and those that desire to be. Couldn't care less if the new manager has an ego the size of Mourinhou or a nastiness that kicks di Canio into touch. Whatever works.

Burley wasn't suited for an international job. His main string to his bow is finding good players in unfashionable clubs. That couldn't really happen at Scotland. Taking Ipswich into Europe and Hearts to the top of the league has to be in his favour. Crystal Palace wasn't great but it's the only blip in his club career for me. I'd be delighted. Does he drink as much as reported. I don't know but I doubt it. Never hear rumours when things are going well. Plus, look at Brian Clough for a start...

Laszlo wouldn't be my first choice but, remember, he played either Nade or defenders up front because he wasn't allowed to sign anyone. In fact, he publicly came out and stated that Hearts needed to sign strikers: "If you look at the table, we have played 18 games and scored 21 goals. That shows where we have problems." In fact, he was sacked for demanding new strikers: "The last meeting with the owner was positive and I told him that we need fresh blood up front" ...and then he was gone! Wouldn't be disappointed by Csaba.

Why ridiculous? He did well with Hearts in an impossible situation.

Pele would be an ideal replacement for Marsella. Less pressure. Able to spot talent a mile off. Get Steve in as Head Scout and Robbo as assistant or coach, we could have stability for the next decade.

Butcher offski?
Given that we are currently second and in a good cup run, then further is first and winning either both cups or winning them regularly. Yeah, I'm sure Terry and Mo really believe they will be above Celtic next year. Money over ambition.

Brill signs permanent deal
Bit shocked. I was convinced he'd be off to Hibs for free. Good on you, Mr Brill.

That's as many names as I can fit. Surprised at so many for Larsson. One club that ended up fighting relegation when they were tipped for promotion. Great player but when did that make a great manager? Mourinho was little more than Bobby Robson's interpreter. Sacchi never played football at senior level either, whilst Walter Smith was very much a reserve. Bobby Moore was probably England's greatest ever defender. Bryan Robson captained England, whilst Ally McCoist was one of Scotland's top strikers. Wouldn't hold any of them up as anything special as managers.

Best: McKay - nothing harder than scoring regularly as a marked man Worst: let's be honest, there's a few
