Didnt think the merger was a prerequisite of getting into the league. Caledonian could never have afforded to go it on their own, otherwise they would have. And the same goes for Thistle. The teams had to merge to get the needed revenue through the gates. One question though, do you believe the great debate, the hatred etc would have continued had Clach not pulled out of the deal.
