Inverness CT -V- Aberdeen

Butcher's Blitz

Inverness' second half blitz blows Aberdeen away at a less than warm Tulloch Caledonian Stadium. Magnificent second half goals from Andrew Shinnie and Billy McKay (twice) made sure that Terry Butcher could enjoy his first match after the winter break and justified his decision to remain at Inverness for footballing reasons as Aberdeen were torn the proverbial new one in the second period.
Josh Meekings replaced Mathew Cooper in the starting line up and Nick Ross and Daniel Devine made the bench as the hosts looked to continue the good work after the mid-winter tropical break which had been replaced by somewhat chillier breezes from Siberia, or as we know it, Aberdeen.
Aberdeen tasted life after Ryan Fraser, and I doubt it tasted very sweet with Smith and Hayes playing wide and Vernon and McGinn the target men.
A Graeme Shinnie free kick was headed forward by Ross Draper and Foran met the ball ten yards out but Langfield dived full length to tip the ball round his left hand post to prevent Inverness from taking the lead.
Aberdeen had their best moment of the first half when they pounced on an error in midfield. Draper and Foran were caught playing too tight and Aberdeen pounced on the loose ball as Jonny Hayes sprinted into the box, and as he cut inside he drove a low ball goalwards but Antonio Reguero was equal to it and gathered the ball comfortably.  Hayes was the Dons only threat but he was being closely watched by Meekings and co.
Owain Tudur-Jones sent Billy McKay scampering towards the Dons box with a delightful lob forward and as he held up play he unselfishly laid the ball into Aaron Dorans' path but he blazed the ball wide of the junction twix post and bar courtesy of a timely intervention from Robertson on the edge of the area.
Doran linked well with the ever available David Raven and the full backs delivery deserved better than to be headed over by contract abstainer Andy Shinnie from seven yards.
Doran was buzzing around and looked menacing every time he got the ball, just the final ball eluding him for now, and he and Draper combined to set up a strike from the big midfielder but it went wide.
Jonny Hayes was kept relatively quiet by the Inverness back line but he still managed to get to the byeline on a couple of occasions but his cut backs found no takers although McGinn managed to volley one over the bar with Reguero making a TV dive, probably trying to keep himself warm.
Half Time 0-0
Terry Butcher maybe had some straight talking to do and his players obviously listened intently during the interval as we loitered with intent around the visitors box for most of the second forty-five, but not before Aberdeen had their best chance of the game.  Raven and Warren got in a fankle on the edge of their own box, with Warren being wrong footed by Raven's deft pass which allowed Hayes to jink into the box and he stepped inside Graeme Shinnie who had closed in to cover, but Reguero pulled off a brilliant reaction save to deny Hayes the opener and this proved crucial to the outcome of the match.

Doran and Foran linked well on the left and Foran chipped a ball onto the edge of the box where Andy Shinnie made himself available.  He left Russell Anderson on the turf as he went for the bye-line and he had no right to score, but score he did from the tightest of angles as he lashed the ball into the roof of the net from two yards out on the edge of the six yard box.  He did even better to escape the clutches of a delighted Ryan Esson who sprinted after him behind Langfield's goal.

Goal of the season coming up soon as Inverness stepped up a gear and the showboating started.  Raven burst over the halfway line on the right before rolling the ball back inside to Doran.  He turned quickly and sped goalwards before releasing the ball towards Draper who was facing his own goal some 25 yards out. He in turn transferred the ball Messi like with as good a back heel as you will see, magnificently into the path of the sprinting Billy McKay who danced across the box before tidily planting the ball behind Langfield.  A breathtaking team goal brilliantly manufactured and brilliantly finished.  Ross Draper must have eyes in the back of his head to pick out Billy he scores when he wants McKay and the wee man did what he does best.  Superb.

Inverness were on a roll now and Draper almost scored another team goal as he was sent through on Langfield after a six man move cut the overworked Dons defence open again, but his sliding flick rolled agonisingly across the face of the goal and round the wrong side of the post.

The cold was almost forgotten as the icing on the cake was supplied by Billy McKay.  Doran fed Raven on the right and his first time cross was head flicked on by Andy Shinnie. McKay split his markers and lashed a first time volley high past 'Clangers' from 12 yards for a not undeserved brilliant third goal for Inverness, and his 20th goal of the season, or 14 in 10 games if you prefer.

Ross and Roberts entered the frozen arena and almost had an immediate impact as the Aberdeen defence were now praying for the final whistle as they hung on for a three goal defeat.

Roberts almost adding a fourth as he brilliantly chested a ball round the defender but the danger was cleared as he nearly caught up with his own pass, delightful skills from the youngster.

Full Time 3-0

How about that.  An absolute mauling for the Dons who can have no complaints about the scoreline as Inverness ran them ragged in the second half scoring three special goals into the bargain and setting themselves up nicely for next weekends league cup semi-final at Easter Road against the Jambo's.  While the strikers were getting the plaudits for some clinical finishing, let's not forget the contribution from the rest of the team who performed brilliantly as a unit.  Reguero made a crucial save at the start of the second half, and also made one or two timely interventions, but that apart, was largely unused and did well to keep warm considering the conditions.  The back line are just brimming with confidence now and who is that sensational right back we have.  David Raven is completely unrecognisable from the fellow that arrived pre-season, a guy that was laughed off the park in most early games.  Well, not any more.  He has been outstanding of late and has grown into the position.  He makes himself available more often than not and his crosses are becoming legendary.
Our goals today would not have looked out of place at the Camp Nou, and Draper's back heel flick into the path of McKay was a particular highlight that will long be remembered. Billy not breaking stride before finishing with aplomb.  All in all, one of the best half's of football seen at the stadium and Butcher was milking and orchestrating the applause at the end, a great way to finish off what has been a momentous week for the club.

tm4tj MotM:- If it were not for an outstanding performance by the returning Josh Meekings, then Dave the Rave would have got my nod, but Josh was simply superb.  A couple of tasty tackles on former Inverness favourite Jonny Hayes went down well with the home support and he looks as solid as a rock at the back, ably assisted by Warren at the heart of the defence.  If truth be told, there were no weaknesses today and any one of the starting eleven could have been on my list, but Josh Meekings is my MotM.  Welcome back.

Inverness CT -V- Aberdeen - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Who needs summer football

The winter break has come and gone, we are still in second place, and what better way to kick off 2013 than a home game against Aberdeen.  Winter break, I hear you say.  It's been like the bloody Caribbean in Inverness this first week, T shirts at 10:00pm at night, almost like a girls night out in Geordie land.  It looks as though Michael Fish might be the SPL's meteorological advisor as the snow has arrived just in time for the restart of the footie season.

Mind you, the monotony of the mundane winter break was broken when Butcher almost went from Tinks to Tykes, but his heart ruled his head and he remains manager of Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

The January sales have seen Inverness sign on 20 year old Danny Devine after the Northern Irish defender was freed by parent club Fleetwood, and decided against extending his stay at Wrexham where he had been farmed out to for three months.

Aberdeen, have lost Andrew Considine for the season through injury.  The 25 year old defender broke his leg in the 3-1 victory over Dundee and has since undergone surgery.  Craig Brown has lost one player but welcomes back to training Ryan Jack from a similar injury.

Huddersfield Town are interested in Ryan Fraser, but not as interested as Bournemouth who look to be favourites for his signature. The young winger has had a magnificent season for the Dons since breaking into the squad on a regular basis and has earned the unwanted tag of the most fouled player in the SPL.

Since we last played the Dons five games ago, we have remained unbeaten gaining nine points during that run.  Wins over Hibs and Dundee, with draws against United, St Johnstone and St Mirren.  We also ended our run of scoring in every game this season, drawing a blank at Perth.  Aberdeen have seven points from six fixtures since then, beating Dundee and St Johnstone, but losing out to Motherwell, Kilmarnock and Hearts whilst drawing their last outing at home to the Arabs.  Aberdeen  have quietly gone about their business and have crept into fifth place in the SPL to sit just three points adrift of Inverness in second spot.

The Dons have potential match winners in Niall McGinn who has scored 14 league goals this season and none other than our very own ex-player Jonny Hayes who can produce something out of nothing to change a game. Joe Shaughnessy, the young Irish defender who has just been named young player of the month for December is enjoying a steady run in the side and has extended his contract until 2015.

***Latest Team News***

Inverness defender Chris Hogg will resume full training on Monday after his lengthy lay off with a horrific knee injury that sidelined him for over a year. We just need to get Simon King fighting fit and that will be a clean bill of health for the squad. Josh Meekings has recovered and will rejoin the squad having missed the last two games.  Danny Devine could make the bench after his move North.  Jason Oswell has left the Inverness camp after making only two subs apearances for the Caley Jags, mainly due to the form of strikers Billy McKay and Andrew Shinnie.  Andy Shinnie has to make the next move in the contract talks with Inverness according to the manager.  A contract has been offered and Inverness await a decision from the Scotland international midfielder.

Aberdeen will be without Andrew Considine who has suffered a broken leg. Hughes, Milsom, and Osbourne are fit again and will be added to the squad, but Clark, Jack and Naismith will miss out.  Ryan Fraser has played his last game for the Dons after signing for Bournemouth on a three and a half year contract believed to be around £400K.  Good luck to the much fouled youngster who has a bright future ahead of him.

tm4tj Prediction:- It's hard to tell how teams react to these enforced lay-offs as it often disrupts the continuity of the performances.  We have slowed up a little in our last two games, coming from behind twice to draw with the Buddies in a tough Boxing Day spectacle, and a tense no scoring draw at Perth with Billy McKay drawing a blank in both games.  These games can be nervy affairs and neither side will want to lose ground in the race for best of the rest which has me leaning towards a goalless draw.  However, the Butcher bounce could tilt it in our favour and we might just sneak a narrow but welcome three points.

Terry Butcher has unfinished business

Teaser Paragraph:
Butcher nails his colours to the mast

Terry Butcher has turned down the chance to manage Championship strugglers Barnsley to continue the work he started at Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

Terry thanked the club for giving him the opportunity to conduct talks with Barnsley, and after giving it some thought has decided that he has some unfinished business to sort out right here and said

"I have decided that my future lies at Inverness. We have been going extremely well to be second in the SPL, still in the Scottish Cup and with a League Cup semi final to look forward to later this month.

"I have also brought people to this club and, on reflection, feel that I should remain with them to try and continue the good work. My focus is now firmly on that."

Terry had based his decisions purely on footballing reasons, nothing else, and obviously with the club going along nicely he has plenty of reasons to remain where his heart is, but the Barnsley directors sold the club really well to Terry and he had a long hard look at the facts but the decision he has reached has fairly cheered up a bleak midwinter break.

I see this as a good example being shown to the players who are mulling over contract extensions, when the manager can see Inverness as a club going places above a Championship side, then surely that sends the right message right through to the core of this club and can only breed positivity for the coming fixtures.

Maybe a knighthood is out of the question, but Sir Terence of Butcher and Lord of Inverness is a certainty at the Queens next hand outs.  Yes Terry, the Highlands Are Yours.

Plenty of delighted fans on the forum in CTO, and rightly so.  The man we have put our trust in, has returned the favour and deserves plenty of backing from the fans for the faith he has shown in our club.

Here's Terry to tell us all about it...........

Ross County -V- Inverness CT - GAME OFF

Teaser Paragraph:
Polis on the offensive

Just like buses.  None for ages then four come along at once.  Yes, it's the fourth Highland Derby of the season at Dingwall if they can get the water off the pitch.  ***GAME OFF***

But, be aware everybody, the Northern Constabulary   are on the look out for offensive behaviour from either sets of fans and some common phrases from previous fixtures will be deemed offensive and you could find yourselves missing out on the action and handing over your hard earned all for the sake of a few choice words.........PC gone mad methinks.  See official spiel @ http://ictfc.com/new...ict-2nd-january

Inverness will first foot the global Energy Stadium on the 2nd of January for the first game of 2013, a 3:05pm kick off, and if it's half as good as our last visit it will be a cracker of a game.

The three previous meetings this season have seen Inverness come out on top, but they have all been close games which could have gone either way with both sides having periods of ascendency during the ninety minutes.  The first encounter at Tulloch Caledonian Stadium saw the hosts eventually overcome County when Aaron Doran fired home a spectacular clincher to seal all three points.  Ross Draper and Andrew Shinnie putting the hosts in control before the break, but County came back strongly in the second period when Vigurs scored early and pressed for an equaliser before Doran ended the scoring.

Then came the cup games, and what drama they produced. An incredible 3-3 game at Dingwall ended with Butcher punching the air, and Adam's almost punching himself after a hectic finale saw the game levelled, won and drawn in dramatic fashion. The replay was less hectic, but it was a nervy Inverness that saw off another County fightback and eventually earn the trip to Kilmarnock in the next round, Billy McKay doing the needful either side of a superb Ian Vigurs counter.

The one thing you can be sure of, the game will not lack a bit of passion or drama and on the tight Dingwall park then this will be another one not for the faint hearted.

All this, of course, will be subject to the weather being lenient enough after County's last fixture against Hearts on Saturday was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.  Nothing new at Dingwall then, their pitch has a history of call off's and with the weather since last Saturday, don't hold your breath.

***Latest Team News***

Nick Ross managed a few minutes at Perth after his lengthy lay off, but Chris Hogg and Simon King remain long term victims.  Mathew Cooper will continue to fill Josh Meekings central defensive role should Josh fail to pass a fitness test on his groin.  Foran and Andy Shinnie were subbed at Perth but should be fit for this game.  Aaron Doran was apparently suffering from manflu at Perth, that could explain his reluctance to take on a defender, so hopefully he will pull through.  Terry Butcher expects another "blood and snotters" encounter with "last man standing" the winner.

Ross County news is harder to assemble as Derek Adams keeps it close to his chest.  Stuart Kettlewell is still out and Adams has released fringe players Russell Duncan, John Bateson, Kurtis Byrne and Keeper Joe Malin, looking to free up some cash for incoming players in the January sales.  Steven Craig has now become a permanent fixture at Partick Thistle after signing on at Firhill for the rest of the season.  Young Alex Cooper has featured recently and looks set to continue.

tm4tj Prediction:-  I expect no quarter to be given or asked for and we will probably have to endure another second half onslaught.  We will do well to remain unbeaten over County this season but I will go for a 1-1 draw.  :ictscarf:

St Johnstone -V- Inverness CT

Wot.......no goals

Inverness drew a blank for the first time this season as the hectic Christmas schedule took it's toll on the players of both sides, the game ending 0-0 with very few clear opportunities for either side.  When the dust settled, the point gained was a point closer to leaders Celtic as Inverness finished the calendar year in second spot on goal difference from Motherwell.
If truth be told, it was a rather drab affair, but interesting enough to keep the fans on their toes as the Perth team tried to force the play in the second half only to be met by some stubborn and resolute Inverness defending, but a team still dangerous on the break, if only they could have found the final ball.
Josh Meekings once more failed to make the starting eleven and young Mathew Cooper continued to deputise with Nick Ross making the bench.  Gregory Tade would be the Saints main threat using his power and pace in direct opposition to Cooper, hoping to unsettle the lad, but Cooper and the back line held firm.
Inverness CT ensured that they finished 2012 in second place in the SPL table despite being held to a 0-0 draw against St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park in the SPL - the first time all season that Terry Butcher's side have failed to score a goal.
Here's the match highlights...

Inverness CT -V- St Mirren - Report

Boxing Day Drama

Inverness missed the chance to stay on their own in second place, but if truth be told, a draw was a bonus after St Mirren twice went in front only to be pegged back on both occasions in a pulsating match that was not good for the heart, but it was certainly entertaining and good value for the three and a half thousand Boxing Day fans.
Can't top Rig's excellent report, so here it is in it's entirety
Smashing game of football today. Disappointed that we dropped two points but by the end of the game a draw was definitely a fair result. Both teams played some great stuff and there was some fantastic performances from the likes of Andrew Shinnie for Inverness and Teale for St Mirren who turned Graeme Shinnie inside, out and inside again throughout the game.

ICT lined up with the familiar 4 - 2 - 3 - 1 formation with Matthew Cooper coming in for Josh Meekings. St. Mirren looked like they were set up as a 4 - 5 - 1 with Steven Thompson the lone forward with support from McGowan in behind him.

After what seemed to be only a few seconds Dougie Imrie got the ball on the ICT left midfield and moved towards goal before taking an opportunistic shot that seemed to catch Reguero off guard and found its way into the net across the keeper to put the Buddies one up. After this goal ICT started to dominate in terms of ball retention without actually threatening Samson in goal. Saint Mirren defended deeply and were easily blocking the ICT route to goal. Tudur Jones, after long range efforts against Hearts and Dundee, found himself with a bit of space at the edge of the box and rifled in a shot which drifted wide of goal. Foran then had a header saved by Samson before McGowan thundered in a free kick which cracked off the cross bar with Reguero beaten.

Andrew Shinnie was denied a shot at goal following a last ditch tackle by Mair I think it was and then Samson then pulled off a wonderful save down to his right as he pushed a header from Aaron Doran round the post. Andrew Shinnie grabbed the equaliser for ICT after he gathered the ball on the ICT left and drifted infield. He glided past two men just outside the area and struck his shot fiercely into the top right corner with Samson only able to watch the ball fly past him. Gary Teale was having a fantastic battle with Graeme Shinnie on the ICT left and was regularly beating his marker and it was from one of his crosses that Steven Thompson was picked out but hew fired high over the bar with a very uncomposed effort. McKay, going for a goal in his 8th consecutive game, connected well with a cross from the right but his volleyed effort was just wide of the goal.
Half Time 1-1
St. Mirren started the second half quickly and Imrie scurried to the byline before fizzing a cross all the way across the box but no one was on hand to tap it in. After that ICT started to turn the screw and passed up a great chance after some good work from Andrew Shinnie led to a half chance to McKay who opted to shoot instead of play in Foran who had a clear run at goal. McKays shot was weak and trundled wide of goal.

Thompson headed St. Mirren back into the lead after more good work from Teale on the right and his cross was bulleted home by Thompson from around 8 yards out. By this point the game had swung back and St. Mirren were dominating proceedings as ICT struggled to get a foothold and resorted to some aimless punts forward as they abandoned some of the nice passing play that had been on show from both ICT and St. Mirren. Foran saw a header droft over the bar and Andrew Shinnie volleyed goalwards but Samson dealt well with his effort.

However an equaliser soon came and it was the result of St. Mirren being unable to clear the lines from an ICT corner. Aaron Doran meet a high clearance and volleyed an effort back towards goal. Samson was only able to parry the shot and Foran was first to react and bundled his header into the goal. Suddenly ICT were on top again as the fantastic Andrew Shinnie was thwarted by a one handed Samson save after he had drifted through the St. Mirren defence and Doran also passed up a good chance with a very weak effort that trundled wide.

However, going into the final few minutes of the game it was St. Mirren who suddenly looked like they could grab a winner as Lewis Guy met a wonderful cross and cracked an effort off the post with Reguero stranded. Two goals were ruled out for offside for St Mirren and St Mirren also had a penalty claim waved away as Carey (I think) was booked for diving.
Full Time 2-2
Quite an incredible match with plenty of chances for both sides. It was great to see two teams, for the most part, try and play some good passing football. St. Mirren were more defensive for most of the game but when they stifled an Inverness attack the strode forward from the back with some great passing and movement which carved open the ICT defence on several occasions. Teale and McGowan had good games and Matthew Cooper struggled against Thompson who gave him all sorts of problems. For ICT Andrew Shinnie was fantastic. His close control and dribbling were top class and he was at the centre of most of our attacks. He came in for some rough treatment from some of the St. Mirren players who found him hard to stop.

Crowd announced as 3,506 with around 150 - 200 St. Mirren fans. I didn't realise that there were no trains running today so fair play to those fans that did travel today. Bit poor from the ICT support again but I thought there was a bit more than was announced.

There's been some discussion on Collums performance and I have to say I thought he was absolutely rotten. My favourite decision today that he got wrong was when Draper was "tackled" from behind by a St Mirren player who didn't play the ball and caught Drapers leg. For some inexplicable reason Collum gave a free kick to St. Mirren. A very poor performance.

Inverness CT -V- St Mirren - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Thick and Fast

No, not Ben Johnson, but the games are coming in rapid succession just now so I will be brief and to the point.

It's Boxing day, you have had your fill of turkey and mulled wine, the presents are all opened and you need some fresh air.  What better way to exercise your lungs than get down to the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium and watch the SPL's most entertaining team.  No, not St Mirren, I'm talking about something that is right under our very own noses, the famous ICT, top scorers and leakiest defence; now surely that is a recipe for a goalless draw if ever I wrote one.  Last Saturday saw a paltry crowd of only 3003 brave the elements to watch another five goals. For heavens sake, surely they deserve better than that, so get off your arses and get down to the dump and see for yourself..........you know it makes sense.

Xmas presents for all at Inverness with the breaking news that Josh Meekings and Graeme Shinnie have both signed two year contract extensions taking them up to May 2015.  Meekings has revelled in his central defence role after an early season injury to Simon King and Graeme Shinnie has made the left back position his own after Kenny Gillet moved on in the summer.  Terry Butcher is quoted as saying "this is a fantastic Christmas present for the club and supporters" and he is hopeful that more will follow.

Inverness eventually overcame a spritely Dundee last time out by the same scoreline they produced at Dens Park, this one more convincing after the Dens Parkers tried to play their way out of trouble, unlike teams like Hamilton who would defend in depth and bore the pants off you. He does score when he wants, it's now official, and he also scores anyway he likes, standing up, volleying, heading, lying down, it's all the same to Billy, he just can't stop scoring.  That's eighteen goals for the season and seven games in a row including that hat-trick against the Arabs.  Confidence is the key, he is like a new player this season after struggling with injuries last year, but there's no stopping him at the moment.

St Mirren pulled off an excellent win on Friday night defeating Motherwell 2-1 in Paisley, Stephen Thompson's first half double being enough to see the Buddies oust Motherwell, a side we have struggled to cope with this season.  That was their fifth SPL win this year and it lifted them above County at the tail end of the league, a nice wee Christmas present for the Paisley faithful.  However, their away form shows only one win in nine games with five defeats.  On the plus side for them, they have only conceded eleven goals on the road, but conversely only scored six.

***Latest Team News***

We have never had it so good on the injury front, although that will be little consolation to long term sufferers Chris Hogg and Simon King.  Josh Meekings went off against Dundee but should recover and a clean bill of health is predicted otherwise.

Danny Lennon will be without Jim Goodwin and Marc McAusland, both suspended. Kenny McLean, Gary Teale and Paul Dummett are all doubts picking up knocks against Motherwell.  Gary Teale also suffered with a tightening of the abductors, although he is expected to be fit and even better news for Buddies fans is that the talented Paul McGowan could be included in the squad.  He has been out since September when he injured his shoulder but is raring to go now according to gaffer Lennon.

tm4tj Prediction:- As the season progresses, it gets more difficult to predict these so called easier games as the teams in trouble tend to raise their game as the stakes get higher.  As these games are not played on paper, this will be another potential banana skin with the Buddies out to get a run going to ease away from danger, but we have become better at holding on to advantages and our scoring streak has become the norm.  I don't see this game as being any different although if the Mirren dig in we may have to be patient, but with McKay in our side, as Ellie Goulding said to me the other day, anything could happen.  I'll go for a tense 2-1 home win.
