CTO Player of the Month - September

Teaser Paragraph:
It won't come as a surprise to anyone that ICT skipper Richie Foran was CTO's Player of the Month for September.

Foran was on target in all four league games, including an outstanding brace against Dundee United, and was even voted as the top player in the one September game he didn't score in - the League Cup game at Stenhousemuir. He was deemed to be Man of the Match in every game except the home draw with Aberdeen, where debutant Andre Blackman took the honours.

The Irishman compiled a total of 77 votes this month, nearly double that of second placed Philip Roberts, with Ross Draper third.

Richie also flies to the top of the overall standings, where he holds a four point lead over Draper.

CTO Player of the Month - August

Teaser Paragraph:
It's not been a good start to the season for ICT - but the one bright spark so far has been the form of Andrew Shinnie. The attacking midfield player, who missed most of the second half of last season with a broken foot, scored against Kilmarnock and Hearts, as well as picking up a double at Arbroath in the League Cup - so it's no surprise that he was CTO's Player Of The Month for August. He was voted man of the match twice and picked up 50 votes, just clear of newcomers Gary Warren and Ross Draper.

It's early stages in the overall standings, but Andy is joined at the top of the table by Ross Draper, who also gave two man of the match performances in August. There's a long way to go yet, though...

Inverness CT -V- Ross County - Report

Still in the shadows

An exciting first SPL Highland Derby ended with the hosts taking all three points in a pulsating match at Tulloch Caledonian Stadium. Inverness had taken an early lead when Ross Draper scored from a corner and as the game levelled out Andrew Shinnie stroked the second home near the half hour. An Ian Vigurs free kick brought County right back into the mix but a sensational volley from Aaron Doran sealed the points near the end.

A big away support was expected and the County fans delivered as they filled the away end, and the usually apathetic home support came out of the woodwork to welcome those from over the bridge to the SPL derby. It had been a bright sunny day but as the game loomed, rain clouds were getting closer and the match kicked off with a damp atmosphere above, but there was plenty of energy on and around the park.

Inverness made one change from the side that trounced Dundee United with big Owain Tudur-Jones replacing Gavin Morrison in the starting eleven where the Welshman's experience would prove invaluable as the game wore on. There was I suppose another alteration, Terry Butcher sat this one out in the stand with his walkie-talkie for company.

For County, Richard Brittain and Colin McMenamin were included from the start after missing last weeks games and Derek Adams was looking for a return to winning ways having lost the last two.

The half started with a bang inside the first minute. Legendary Inverness man Ross Tokely almost scored an astonishing opener at the wrong end for his new club as he crashed a tantalising cross from Doran against his own bar with Michael Fraser well beaten. And it was the home side that almost broke the deadlock a few minutes later as Jones broke into the box and flicked the ball goalwards with the outside of his boot only for Grant Munro to make a timely intervention to keep the ball out with Fraser once more beaten.

At this early stage it looked as though County were going to do well to keep the score down and it was no surprise when Inverness opened the scoring in the ninth minute. A Roberts shot was blocked by Tokely and from the resultant corner taken by Graeme Shinnie, Ross Draper rose highest to nod the ball into the top corner with some part of his body for a deserved opener.

County had been stung by this goal and they eventually wandered forward and they almost snatched an equaliser. Mark Fotheringham jinked across the defender and unleashed a superb curling shot that smacked back off the crossbar with Reguero beaten. Brittain struck a free kick narrowly over as County looked more positive now but the second goal was to come at the other end.

The visitors had almost weathered the early storm and were beginning to find there way, but it had taken them fifteen minutes to settle and just as the tide looked to be turning Inverness scored a sucker second. Unfortunately for Granty Munro, he won't want to see the video replays of that one again. He missed what looked like a comfortable clearance just inside his own half which allowed Richie Foran to scamper down the right wing. Foran on a great run of form just now unselfishly looked up and picked out the advancing midfield run from Andy Shinnie and he stroked the ball home from fifteen yards for a tidy second goal from the attackers point of view, but a defenders nightmare for County.

Munro almost atoned for lapse and turned a shot towards the Inverness goal, but Reguero pulled off a TV save, clutching the ball out of the air to thwart the ex-Inverness captain.

The next goal was going to be crucial and as County pressed for an opening, Inverness almost caught them out again. Phillip Roberts released Doran with a brilliant through ball but as Doran entered the box Fraser came out and diverted the ball away from goal with an outstretched leg. Was this going to be another blank day for Doran after yet another one-on-one miss from the Irishman.

As a contest, the game was more level now as half time approached but it was Inverness that had the all important statistic, and that was how it finished after the first forty five.

Half Time 2-0

I don't know what was said at the interval, but it appeared that the visiting players had the County managers voice ringing in their ears.

Referee Brines was to play a vital part as early as the third minute of the half when he awarded a free kick to County some twenty five yards from goal. Josh Meekings clearly had made a clearance and the County striker then collided with the defender. However Brines intervened and County took advantage. No complaints about the standard of the free kick though as Vigurs got it up, down and around the wall to leave a slightly mis-positioned Reguero clutching at thin air. Game On!

The Jaggies seemed to have handed the initiative to the Staggies and they now enjoyed the lions share of the game. We looked content to give them the ball and see what they could do, and they tried hard enough but our defence held firm and the County storm eventually blew over. It had been a frenetic second half punctuated by frequent stoppages for free kicks from ever the annoying Mr Brines.

Draper could have put the game beyond Dingwall as he latched onto a ball on the edge of the six yard box, but Fraser again stuck out a leg to push the ball away. Quinn made Reguero work with an angled drive, but the keeper was always favourite to block it as County pressed the game. It looked as though an equaliser was coming as the game progressed with the ball fizzing around the Inverness box, the home fans were starting to look through gaps in their fingers when a goal fit to win any competition sealed the victory with three minutes of normal time left.

Graeme Shinnie lofted a long free kick forward to diminutive target man, substitute Billy McKay. Now he is not the tallest of players but he has a big heart. He out jumped two defenders to nod a hopeful ball in the direction of Doran who had already missed two glorious chances. He would not miss a third. As the ball dropped from height around twenty one yards out, he volleyed a thunderous low shot that went like an arrow into Fraser's net right inside his post and the keeper had no chance, despite a full length dive, to keep the ball out.

Cue scenes of joy at the North Stand as the South Stand began to empty. There was still time for a couple more efforts from both sides and a mazy wee run from McKay, but no further goals were forthcoming and Inverness Caledonian Thistle owned the Highlands once more to keep County in their shadow. It had been a superb advert for the SPL with both teams showing plenty of skill and the wider TV audience were surely treated to some special goals tonight, none moreso than Doran's clincher.

Inverness CT -V- Ross County - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Shadow Boxing or tug of war

History making game on Friday as Ross County attempt to come out of the shadow of the big club over the bridge. It's the first ever SPL Highland derby and the TV camera's will be there to catch the action and see who can pull the rope the hardest. The verbal sparring has begun between the rival fans looking to gain the bragging rights for the next couple of months with the Caley Jags fans likening County to a side forever in our Shadow in retaliation to County's jibes about our lack of milk at the Stadium. Ahhhhh, the joys of a derby game, maybe Hank Marvin and the lads will make an appearance.

Let's hope the result is not similar to one of the evening derby's at the Caledonian Stadium when both clubs were in the first division. Inverness were left chasing shadow's that night. 25th of February 2003, County were desperate for points as they were struggling to avoid relegation. They came, they saw and they conquered in some style. It seemed that every time County went forward, they scored and a 5-1 defeat was dished out to a shell shocked Inverness. Kevin McLeish, a Steve Ferguson penalty and a Tassos Venetis strike saw the Dingwall side three up at half-time. Further goals from Hugh Robertson and Conor Gethins ended the County goal spree while Dennis Wyness smashed home a consolation volley for Inverness.

Make no bones about it; fans from both sides have been looking forward to this game for a long time. County may have taken a bit longer to get to the SPL, but they are here now on merit and they have made a solid if unspectacular start to their debut season having recently lost their unbeaten league games run of forty undefeated, good by any standards. This has come from having a settled side and Adams has gathered a decent bunch of players together, none moreso than our old favourites of Grant Munro, Ross Tokely and Russell Duncan. Not to mention the other defectors in Ian Vigurs, Michael Fraser, and Mark Brown. This will certainly add plenty of spice to this fixture as some of these guys will certainly have something to prove to their old boss.

Terry Butcher will watch the derby with Ross County from the luxury of the main stand after agreeing to a one match touchline ban. His criticism of referee George Salmond after the Dons game did not go down well with the authorities and his ongoing battle with the beaks has culminated in this slap on the wrist. Butcher's views were seen to indicate incompetence from the officials. No argument from me about that.

Ginger Jaggy pens his thoughts on this historic match and begins with a history lesson for us all.........

1994 was big for many reasons. That year saw President Bill Clinton start talks with Russia to limit nuclear arms capability; long serving Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi first came to power while Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as the first black president of South Africa. In sport Michael Schumacher won his first of seven world titles amidst the back drop of three time world champion Aryton Senna’s death earlier in that season. The major football news saw Brazil crowned world champions for a fourth time but for many in the Highlands, the 12th of January was the most important date of all.

Lots has been said and written about the merger of Inverness Caledonian Thistle but for fans of both the clubs the 12th of January 1994 was a new dawn. That day saw the Scottish league make Scottish football history by admitting a highland side into the league format. No one expected Ross County also getting the nod by the authorities but they did and from being excluded for so long the highlands got two representatives. Moving forward into 2012 and this Friday makes history as the first ever highland derby to be played in the top flight takes place. The attendance looks likely to break the record but before I indulge your footballing taste buds with Fridays feast let’s start off with a little trip down memory lane.

After that magnificent day for highland football in January all eyes moved to the 27th of August that same year for the first ever Highland derby in the Scottish football league. .The game was played at Victoria Park but it was to be away supporters celebrating a historical first derby victory. That day Caledonian Thistle scored once but came out 3-1 winners. Wilson Robertson was the first man to score for Inverness in these derbies scoring the last of the 3 goals. Before then Ross County had scored three but sadly for them two ended up in their own net – what a shame! This first ever game attracted 3157 but it would not be long before they attracted over 5000 spectators. Inverness’s turn to host ended in a drab 0-0 draw in front of a derisory 2440 people - at Telford Street Park- as the team lost form midway through the season after a great start. County would then revenge that score line from Victoria Park earlier on in the season by winning by the same score line at the same venue in the new year derby. It was 6th of May 1995 when Inverness saw their first home victory against the men from Dingwall. Norman Macmillan, Alan Hercher and Charlie Christie were the heroes in a routine 3-0 win at Telford Street in front of 3362. The result was just for pride but did end any hopes County had of promotion at the first time of asking. The first ever season of Football League Highland derbies saw Inverness hold the bragging rights with two victories but it was not enough as we finished a disappointing 6th while County finished 3rd.

Back to Friday with supporters of both sides hoping that they can take first bragging rights with them. To liven things up even more County will turn up with three old Caley Thistle stalwarts in Grant Munro, Ross Tokely and Russell Duncan. The hope is that this attendance will break the previous record of 6120 at Victoria Park in 2004 with history being made in the first derby at this level. County have adapted well to life in the top flight but could be described as solid rather than spectacular, only amassing 7 goals, of which 4 came at St Mirren last weekend and they still lost. They have produced 4 goal-less draws so far this season which proves that they may not be able to find the scoring touch but they certainly know how to keep it tight. They almost shocked Champions Celtic at Victoria Park but they were denied Victory by a Kris Commons injury time goal.

If county have been tight and hard to break down then the same can not be said about Inverness. A huge improvement on last season has seen performances much better and much easier on the eye. But while we don’t need to ask twice where the net is, it has been a frustrating start at the back. Compared to County, Inverness has only kept one clean sheet coming in the 4-0 demolition of Dundee United on Saturday. But we have scored in every league match so far this season and had we not been so slack at the back, we could be sitting much higher. Spirits are high after last weekend and with that result we climbed up to the dizzy heights of 9th jumping last weekend’s opponents and our visitors on Friday. Hopefully after the first win and clean sheet, confidence will be high all across the team especially against a side that will be rattled by defeat in such a remarkable game. Butcher looks to have stumbled across a team that is very well balanced with Richie Foran in magnificent form and young Arsenal loanee Philip Roberts adding a touch of quality and an eye for goal to boot.

However, form goes out the window in these types of matches as it is everyone’s cup final and so all that is left to say is COME ON CALEY.

***Latest Team News***

Antonio Reguero deputised last weekend against Dundee United and he will continue in goal with Ryan Esson requiring a scan on his injured groin, as Butcher fears he may be without his number 1 for a few weeks. Chris Hogg, Shane Sutherland, Nick Ross and Simon King are all long term casualties and Andre Blackman is struggling to shake off an ankle knock sustained at Hibernian. Owain Tudur-Jones is available, however Gavin Morrison has proved to be an able deputy in midfield where he adds some steel to the engine room. The impressive Phillip Roberts and Conor Pepper will vie for the strikers role with Billy McKay and Butcher may well favour the same starting eleven as last time out. Richie Foran is on a rich vein of form just now with five goals in four games and his first last weekend was sheer class.

Ross County will be without Marc Corcorran and Alex Cooper. Richard Brittain and Colin McMenamin had a run out with the U20's to build their fitness for Friday and should be included in the squad. Paul Lawson never played in that game and is unlikely to feature. With neither camp giving much away, that's about it as far as latest team news. I suspect both managers will be keeping their first eleven close to their chest, just adds to the tension ahead of the big game.

tm4tj Prediction:- Wow, how do you predict a game that has never seen the light of day before, a first SPL derby. Prior to last weeks results I would have put County's chances of victory at good to excellent, but last weeks results have thrown a massive spanner in the works. County are very strong defensively, especially on their own tight park where space is at a premium. However the wide open area's at Inverness could be to our advantage, and the recent form of Richie Foran has given us reasons to be cheerful. Phillip Roberts is an unknown quantity for County to deal with and his youthful enthusiasm could pull the rope our way. It is of course too tight to call though and a share of the spoils could be on the cards, but I will go for a tense and tight victory for Inverness by the odd goal in three.

Come on the Caley Jags, reel that rope in......................Who put the o and the y in County

Inverness CT -V- Dundee Utd - Report

Inverness open their account for the season
First win of the season for Inverness and they did it in style. A four goal hammering of Dundee United lifted the tension at Tulloch Caledonian Stadium ahead of next weeks first SPL Highland derby. United started the game in control but by the end were a bedraggled side as Inverness ran them ragged in the second half.
A Richie Foran double in the first half was added to after the break by Andy Shinnie and the excellent Phillip Roberts, who blasted home his first goal for the club. The scoreline did not flatter Inverness as they surged forward after the break and built on their half-time lead.
This was just the tonic for the home fans with the Ross County fixture looming and news that the Dingwall club lost again just put the icing on the cake as far as the Inverness support were concerned. So it's smiles all round and this makes the report much easier to compile.
ajsict92 will have a full match report ready when he comes down from cloud nine...........
Foran, Shinnie and that lad with the dodgy barnet
Caley Thistle welcomed Dundee United to the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium with both sides in search of an upturn in recent form. The home side were on the back of gaining another defiant point in the capital against Hibernian but were yet to record a win this season while the Arabs were coming into this game with no goals in two games and following a crushing 3-0 defeat at home to Hearts.
Despite the recent form from the away side any pessimists doubting any chance of a result would be understandable. ICT hadnt beaten United since August 2010 and last season saw ICT ship 3 goals a game against them in 3 defeats. They also contained some quality players in their starting 11. Young starlet Johnny Russell was partnered by Jon Daly who was back from injury and there was also a place for former County star Michael Gardyne and former ICT man John Rankin.
Terry Butcher was forced to make two changes with Ryan Esson and Andre Blackman out with injury. Gavin Morrison made a rare start and Spaniard Antonio Reguero made his first appearance between the sticks. Connor Pepper was dropped to the bench and Phil Roberts was handed his first start. The on-loan Arsenal forward earned plaudits for his mid week performance at Stenhousemuir and despite the Jason Leesque haircut the youngster did not disappoint on his full debut.
It was Dundee United who began the strongest and had ICT very much penned in their own half for the first 15 minutes. The first real chance of note fell to the away side. A long ball from Gavin Gunning was poorly controlled by David Raven and Michael Gardyne seized upon his loose touch to cut inside but couldn't get his shot on target and it curled wide of the far post.
The Arabs continued to threaten however and Jon Daly was next to come close for the away side, another long ball towards the ICT box was well controlled by Russell and he teed up Daly who from about 12 yards would have been expected to hit the target but fortunately for the home side his effort was high, wide and in all honesty rather lazy.
Daly came close again. This time from a corner. Willo Flood floated it in and Daly lost his man and his first time strike was thwarted by Reguero, though he struggled to gather it but was lucky enough to be covered by his defenders.
ICT began to grow into the game with Andrew Shinnie having an effort easily gathered by Cierzniak. What soon followed was a moment of true brilliance. Phil Roberts picked up a slack pass from Sean Dillon and fed it to Shinnie who laid the ball nicely for Richie Foran. The Irishman was in a rich vein of form with 3 goals in 3 games and he curled a delightful first time effort into the top corner of the net, leaving Cierzniak with no chance. A superb strike made to look so simple by the ICT skipper who had now doubled his total tally from last season.
With ICT in the ascendancy they began to dominate and Roberts continued to be the catalyst with his pace and work rate causing the United defence problems, and this lead to double delight before half time was even near. Some neat interplay between Doran and Morrison found Roberts on the left and his pin point cross saw Foran ghost in at the back post and head in goal number two.
It could have been 3 just before the break when Draper found Raven. His deep cross evaded everyone. Including Cierzniak but fortunately for him the crossbar was there to prevent a fluke goal and save the keepers blushes.
Half time:- ICT 2-0 Dundee Utd
Fully refreshed from the break ICT started the 2nd period the hungrier of the two teams. Andrew Shinnie was the first to try and extend the lead. Foran's through ball found him at the edge of the box but Shinnie's effort curled just wide of the post with Cierzniak routed. Aaron Doran then missed a decent opportunity to give ICT a three goal cushion. Foran reiceved Regeuro's punt and eventually squared the ball back to Doran who attempted a strike on his weaker left foot which went high and wide.
United responded with Daly coming close with a looping header from Willo Flood's free kick and this required a finger tip save from Reguero. Keith Watson then attempted a long range effort from about 25 yards for the visitors that was a few inches over the bar.
With about 20 minutes left ICT finally got that 3rd goal. Dillons clearance fell straight to Doran who after a neat exchange with Shinnie found Foran at the edge of the area. His pass to Shinnie was slightly misplaced but following a defensive mix up between Watson and Cierzniak, Shinnie was left with the simple task of sliding the ball into an empty net.
By this point ICT fans were struggling to comprehend what they were watching. A 3-0 lead against tricky opposition had some thinking they were in dreamland. It got even better 3 minutes later when Roberts topped his fine afternoon off with a fabulous goal. Doran's free kick was brilliantly knocked down by Foran. Warren laid it back to Roberts and from the edge of the area he struck it first time with the outside of his foot into the far corner of the net with the keeper at full stretch yet again. ICT fans had gone from dreamland to delirious delight in those 3 minutes and even the most die-hard pessimist knew that a first win was on its way.
With the game drawing to a close tiredness was beginning to creep in to the legs of ICT's players having put in full effort to this game and Foran, Roberts and Shinnie were all replaced by Pepper, McKay and Oswell in the closing stages to standing ovations. The remaining minutes played themselves out and the referee blew his whistle for full time.
Full time:- ICT 4-0 Dundee Utd
To summarize:- I had a feeling we would win this one. Not by the margin we did but maybe one of these bland 1-0 wins Terry was asking for. There is no question though that it was deserved. We weathered the United storm in the opening minutes and slowly but surely picked them apart with some quality play and clinical finishing. Our key players were all at their best with Doran, Shinnie, and Foran all giving top class displays along with Phil Roberts impressive full debut. At the age of 18 he is a young man with a very bright future. Skillful and dynamic but with a great work rate to back him up, a player with immense potential. Defensively we looked decent despite one or two hiccups and our playing from the back approach was key to our game. Reguero also deserves credit for his late inclusion. Kept a clean sheet and showed some decent handling and distribution... can't ask for much more. Just need to keep this level of performance up.
ajsict92's MotM:- Richie Foran. Back to his best and thriving in his role as target man. Both his goals were class, his effort was that of a man playing for the shirt and his leadership was transcending to the rest of the team. It was an easy decision...keep it up Richie.

Inverness CT -V- Dundee United - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Houston, we have a problem

Next up to Inverness are the Arabs from Dundee, who's boss Peter Houston has confirmed that United have not tabled a new contract for him when his present one runs out at the end of this season. It would appear from the lack of interest shown by the United board that they may be looking elsewhere should Houston not improve the clubs current situation. On the other hand it looks like he is trying to force the clubs hand into negotiations, and why not, after all he did bring home the Scottish Cup and has kept United in the top half of the league.

Both sides struggled to get through their third round league cup ties in midweek against second division opponents. United fared slightly better than Inverness as they overcame Queen of the South without the need for extra-time or penalties. A solitary Johnny Russell strike in the first half was enough to put United into the quarter final draw. Inverness worked even harder to dispose of Stenhousemuir after extra-time and penalties. It was a dramatic shoot out with the SPL side showing their mental strength to go through 6-5 after Ryan Esson saved Darren Smith's spot kick in the sudden death drama.

Inverness are racking up the draws this season and are the only SPL side yet to win a league game. Draw specialists we could be with five out of seven games all square. The other two finished with four goal doings at the hands of Celtic and Motherwell. The plus side of our season so far is our ability to score in every game, and our resillience at coming back from seemingly lost causes when our backs are against the wall, the two draws in Edinburgh evidence of that. We are, however, undoing that strike rate by gifting goals at the back as our minus five goal difference would indicate, although we do appear to be tightening up somewhat in recent games.

Dundee United sit three points above Inverness, albeit they have a game in hand against Celtic still to be played. They are without an away win yet but have only played two away from Tannadice, losing to Kilmarnock and drawing with St Johnstone. Their recent form has disappointed Peter Houston since the 3-0 derby win over Dundee. Two defeats and two draws have taken the edge of United's season so far, and last weeks 0-3 defat at home to Hearts has set alarm bells ringing down Tannadice way. Houston has asked his side to show more character after the poor result against Hearts, although in all fairness, that result hinged on a couple of decisions that went against the Arabs, and with a bit more fortune they could have got something from the game. Hearts keeper MacDonald doing some heroics, and United's strikers without their shooting boots on.

In this fixture at Inverness, there has been eleven SPL encounters. Five wins for United and only two for Inverness with four drawn games. United have won four out of the last five games at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium. We have only scored more than one goal on one occasion, last season, and we still lost that game 2-3 after being two goals ahead. The only no scoring draw was in September 2006. The last Inverness win was in season 2006/2007 when we tiumphed 1-0 thanks to a late Barry Wilson strike. Grant Munro had earlier been sent off for felling barry Robson, but we had the last laugh as Wilson's well placed shot secured all three points. Almost 4,000 fans were at that game in 2007.

Teams on that day were:-
Inverness CT: Fraser, Tokely, Dods, Munro, Hastings, Wilson, Black, Duncan, Rankin (Paatelainen 73), Bayne, McAllister (McSwegan 64).
Dundee Utd: Stillie, Dillon, McCracken, Wilkie, Kalvenes, Robertson (Samuel 46), Kerr, Gomis, Robson, Daly (Robb 73), Hunt (Goodwillie 81).

***Latest Team News***

Inverness are still without Chris Hogg, Nick Ross, Shane Sutherland and Simon King. Andre Blackman was not risked in midweek and will struggle to make this one after injuring his ankle against Hibernian. Owain Tudur-Jones could be back after suspension, depends on which tabloid you believe. The SFA website only shows a two game ban, so I will allow him to play, but Gavin Morrison is knocking at the door for a start and young Arsenal prospect Phillip Roberts looks like he could be worth a try at some stage after another interesting cameo at Stenhousemuir, where he also showed he had the bottle to put away a crucial penalty in the shoot-out.

Dundee United are without the talented Gary Mackay-Steven who is recovering after knee surgery. Jon Daly played in midweek and is hopeful of another ninety minutes this weekend.

tm4tj Prediction:- It's about time we broke our duck for this season and we have been getting better as the weeks have gone on, well most of the team have. David Raven seems to be the weak link and is usually the one that makes the error to allow the opposition in and leave us chasing the game. But we have proved difficult to shake off and if we can limit the errors at the back then we could be on our way to breaking that duck. Quack quack, 2-1 home win.

Stenhousemuir -V- Inverness CT - Report

Teaser Paragraph:
Penalty Drama as Inverness edge it.

A wet and breezy night in Stenhousemuir saw the SPL side struggle to get to grips with the conditions early on but with twenty minutes gone Billy McKay headed the visitors in front.

Stenhousemuir equalised from the spot after Raven brought down Brown Ferguson who took the kick himself. Stewart Kean almost nudged them ahead before half time but he hit the woodwork.

No more goals after the break took the tie to extra-time and that came and went without any further goals.

A dramatic penalty shootout was concluded when Ryan Esson saved Darren Smith'spenalty to win the tie for Inverness 6-5 on penalties.

old caley girl faced the elements and the penalty shoot out to provide us with this report.

The Gods didn't appear to be very happy yesterday. During the day the stormy weather appeared to be of biblical proportions but the artificial surface at Ochilview ensured the game went ahead. A small band of hardy ICT fans left Inverness for Stenhousemuir full of optomism despite the weather. After a short stop at the ICT adopted chippy in Auchterarder we eventually arrived in Stenhousemuir.

It's no secret to anyone that knows me that I much prefer the traditional football ground to modern all seater stadia, so there wasn't much of a choice to be made between the terrace or the stand. The only disappointment was that there was no way of swapping ends at half time. The larger clubs could also take lessons from the courteous staff and stewards.

It wasn't long until the terrace started to fill up with familiar faces, with the central belt fans arriving such as Govan Jaggie, Capital Caley, Red Card and Top Six Next Year. The ICT faithful congregated behind the goal, and as the game kicked off the wind and rain were still relentless.

Stenny started in lively fashion and looked like they were a confident, competent team having dumped Killie out of the cup in the previous round. Billy McKay returned to the Caley Jags team replacing the injured Andre Blackman and took up his usual role as loan striker with Graeme Shinnie dropping back.

This was my first time watching a competitive game on an artificial surface and it soon became plain that staying on your feet and getting a pass on target was a bit of a problem for the ICT lads. After 15 mins we had our first chance when Connor Pepper passed through to Doran who then shot straight at the young Stenny keeper. However in 23 mins a great high ball through from Meekings bounced to Billy McKay who headed past the keeper straight into the net. So we were in front and all was going to plan.

Unfortunately though 15 mins later David Raven didn't stick to the script and was adjudged by ref Bobby Madden to have tripped Ferguson and he also earned himself a yellow card. We couldn't see too well from our end was it stonewalled or not so look forward to seeing the highlights. Ferguson took the penalty and drove the ball low and hard past Esson's right. 1-1.

Things almost went from bad to worse just on half time when Kean got straight through but hit the crossbar.

Half-Time 1-1

Main talk at at half time was the presence of Ally McCoist in the stand and also how well Stenny were playing and how this was going to be a bit of a battle.

The second half didn't see much improvement to be honest. Both teams had opportunities to win but didn't take them. Morrison eventually replaced Pepper and Foran moved up front. This made us look marginally more dangerous and it was clear that players and fans alike wanted to avoid extra time. However it was Stenny that could have settled it when Kean managed to get straight through again one on one with Ryan Esson but shot into the side netting.

Everyone braced themselves for extra time but neither team produced a winner. Roberts replaced McKay and annoyed the home support with a body check on one of their players and thus earned boos for the remainder of the game.

Penalties arrived and standing right behind the goal gave a keepers view of the penalties but most of us seemed to watch through our hands! Up stepped Richie Foran, who struck the ball confidently and hit the post! Groans all round. The next few were scored competently until Hodge shot over the bar. We moved to sudden death until eventually hero Essson saved from Darren Smith.

Full Time 1-1 Inverness win 6-5 on penalties

A much relieved Caley Jags faithful left Ochilview happy to have gained a win, any win, even if it had been done the hard way.

To summarise we huffed and puffed but eventually got the job done. The 4th round draw beckons and the dream of a cup run goes on. It's going to be hard but whisper it one more round to Hampden!

Thanks to old caley girl for that report from a wet and windy Ochilview, I hope it was worth it and maybe a favourable draw in the next round awaits.
