Kilmarnock -V- Inverness CT - Report

Killie pay the penalty

Not quite the fireworks from last season, but nonetheless another three points in the bag for Terry's Allstars, and the dizzy heights of third in the league at the moment. Let's not get too carried away though as there are plenty clubs within touching distance and the fall from grace could be just as rapid as the rise to the top.
Both clubs went with unchanged lineups, hardly surprising given their endeavours over the last week, although Ryan Esson was nowhere to be seen, an alleged injury keeping him away, maybe his nose is out of joint given the rave reviews of Spanish goal minder Antonio Reguero.
Andy Shinnie continued his good form and stroked Inverness ahead after twenty-two minutes, but brother Graeme's penalty taking exploits came to an abrupt end as Cammy Bell brilliantly saved his first half spot kick. There was one firework on display. Liam Kelly let off a rocket to level the scores in the fifty-sixth minute but Billy McKay took over the penalty duties to fire home the winner after seventy-seven minutes. Inverness held on against the now ten men of Kilmarnock to earn themselves another three points and the unaccustomed position of third in the league after twelve games.
One hundred and twenty-five visiting fans witnessed this one and a certain Immortal Howden Ender was one of them, joining up with the Caley Away fans for another great day at the 'JimmysaysayetoaKilliepie' dome. When he gets back home, I hope to have a full match report from him.
And here is his informative overview on yesterdays game.
Well it is yet another fine season for the CaleyAwaywithTerrryandMo Brigade and the JuanjoAway contingent from Central Station. By-passed Fanny's which unfortunately is getting a face lift and headed to the Hunting Lodge which has had more feckin management changes than Hearts of Midlothian - probably late wage packets as well. But a free shot and free pool
(c/o GovindaJeggy) helped pass away the pre match warm-up. It was also nice not to be the oldest as the Owd Bugger from Berks flew up fer the game - by the way what has happened to The Fly ?
Anyway, on to the football.
For thirty minutes, up until the penalty, I would say that the display was the best ever (yes EVER) that I have seen ICT play. We were organised, sure footed, industrious and some of the movement, passing and keeping the ball was simply entertainment personified. If we had scored the penalty then I reckon we would have scored more than the six we did at this time last year. In many ways the penalty miss went against us and that, and probably a half time bollocking from the Irish equivalent of Ken Dodd, got Killie out of their slumber. As fer the Diddymans' comments after the game - well there was a penalty for them but it serves McKenzie rite fer not been born a Mac - and did the ref actually play advantage ? - the two we got were also stoneawllers although Draper may well have lost control of the ball - as fer "pulverising" us - well we simply controlled the first half and it was end to end stuff in the second half and we had more chances than them - although the last 10 minutes was nervewracking and I think they had five efforts that practically tickled our crossbar and two fine saves from Reguero. I hope it wasnt tactical to lie so deep as we went to stringing out across the 18 yard box in a return to an old "nightmare". It may well be that three games in a week took its toll. And did the diddyman not realise that TB sat in the stands fer the Tinkerville game !!
Two reports for the price of one............this one from the immortal man himself...............
It was a case of Ayrshire v Inverness this weekend as Caley Thistle visited Rugby Park whilst Clachnacuddin were just down the road at Somerset Park. The overall outcome was even stevens with Caley Thistle and Ayr both winning 2-1. The long journey home would evidently have been a happier one for us as we jumped up to third in the table, top the SPL goal scoring charts, another three points but the icing on the cake was the manner in how we played in the first half. I have been known to be overly critical but I would have to concede that I witnessed the finest 30 minute spell that I have ever seen from a Caley thistle outfit. Terry Butcher pointed out that we now have "consistency and confidence" to add to our CV. But in that first half we would have taken on anybody and we played as a team. In many ways we did not have one individual who stood out and some players who have performed more as individuals in the past suddenly looked like team players. We were simply commanding. We were organised, we were structured, we were industrious but we also played "keep ball" and some of the passing and movement was stunning at times.
ANDY SHINNIE, who must be close to a Scotland cap, scored in the 15th minute. A shot from Aaron Doran was blocked and Shinnie benefitted from a subtle backheeler from Billy McKay. McKay may well have added a second minutes later but was thwarted by Cammy Bell on that occasion. We were then probably a tad fortunate not to concede a penalty as Gary Warren certainly appeared to bring down Rory McKenzie. From my viewpoint it looked like the referee had allowed advantage to be played. Perhaps that was the piece of sarcasm that Mr Shiels got upset about ?
Both goalkeepers were brought in to action but Cammy Bell to centre stage when he saved a Graeme Shinnie penalty just before half time. I suspect that Graeme did not make the contact that he was looking for and Bell may well have done his homework watching the Ibrox goal. Bell guessed right, went all out to his right and parried, and even got back up to parry the ball away from Roberts. In many ways missing that penalty took us of our stride. I am convinced that if it had gone in then we may well have eclipsed the six goal achievement of last season.
As it turned out Shiels would have given his team a right rollicking at half time and they came out like men possessed, determined to up their game. I note that one of the comments made after the game by Mr Shiels was that they "pulverised" us in second half - now that is sarcasm !! Sure Kilmarnock were a better team but it was still end to end stuff. Bell again thwarted McKay in the 53rd minute and three minutes later we took a sucker punch. LIAM KELLY scored and added to his goal at Parkhead the previous week. It was a well struck 30 yard drive which Reguero had no chance to save.
Then there was the moment that turned the game and Bell was again at the centre of the action, Shane Sutherland put Draper through and Bell clattered him. In many ways it may be argued that Draper "played" for it and may also have lost control of the ball but it was a penalty in anybody's book and the only possible outcome was a red card. None of the Killie players made any sort of appeal as if they knew what was going to happen.
It looked to me that Graeme Shinnie was going to take it but the ball had been smuggled away by BILLY MCKAY who showed his level of confidence by putting the replacement keeper Letheren the wrong way. For the next 15 minutes we were "pulverised" and how Kilmarnock did not score is down to luck and solid defending. It also appeared that the efforts and emotion of the last week suddenly caught up with us and we were camped deep in our own half. I reckon that there was at least five efforts from Kille that scraped the top of our crossbar but Reguero and the troops in the firing line stood firm.
I have to agree with Mr Shiels that Kille should have had a penalty but there were three stonewallers yesterday, two being in our favour. Mr Shiels was evidently not watching the Highland derby as it appears that he did not note that Mr Butcher was sitting in the stands. If Mr Butcher is deemed to be "clever" and "charismatic" then what is Mr Shiels' psychological profile of Craig Brown ?!!
And lets all hope that the month of October brings the first trophy of the season to Inverness as Mr Butcher must be a firm favourite to pick up the Manager of the month accolade. Terry also appeared to suggest that suspensions and injuries tampered with his team selection last season. The picking of the starting eleven against Hearts must be a difficult dilemna for him. But at approximately 13.55 on Staurday 10th November 2012 there may be a new team sitting top of the SPL. (cue smiley!!)
And for good measure, report number two..................
As IHE alluded to above, Inverness were quick out of the blocks and Aaron Doran was close to opening the scoring in the third minute after latching onto a neat flick from Andy Shinnie, but his shot from the angle of the box just cleared the junction of post and bar. Andy Shinnie should have been awarded a free kick if not a penalty as he broke into the box and was uncerimoniously upended right on the line, but no foul was Norris' judgement. He was later to wind up Kenny Shiels by not awarding them anything, according to the Killie manager.
Jones was next to have a pop at goal but he missed the target and the hard working Billy McKay tried his luck after fifteen minutes but he pulled his shot wide.
Kilmarnock were woken up by all this activity around their box and the dangerous Rory McKenzie brought out a great save from Antonio Reguero, who dived low to his right to push his shot to safety, Gary Warren turning the loose ball behind for a corner.
Three minutes later and Inverness broke the deadlock with a well worked goal. Phillip Roberts threaded a ball through to Doran on the edge of the box. His shot was charged down inside the box but Mckay was quickest to react and backheeled the ball into the path of Andy Shinnie who stroked the ball under Cammy Bell.
A wayward pass across his defence from McKeown set McKay in on goal, but as he took the ball to the edge of the six-yard box, Bell blocked his effort with his legs and the chance was gone.
McKenzie was denied a penalty claim as he went down under challenge inside the box and Shiels was not amused, but he did appear to go down rather easily.
Reguero again earned his crust by diving low to his left to thwart a low strike by McKenzie from twenty yards, just a minute after Bell had saved from Roberts at the other end.
Drama as half-time approached. Lee Johnson blocked Andy Shinnie as he waltzed into the box and the referee pointed to the spot only for brother Graeme to be foiled by Bell who was doing his utmost to keep Killie in the game. He clawed the ball away with a sprawling one handed save then reacted brilliantly to punch the rebound away from the advancing Roberts, top class stuff from Cammy.
Half-Time 0-1
Strong stuff must have been said in the Killie dressing room and the home side looked more determined in the second half. McKay was once more stopped by Bell and ten minutes after the break Liam Kelly set off his rocket. He turned on the edge of the centre circle strode forward unchallenged then unleashed an unstoppable shot into Reguero's postage stamp corner. The keeper did manage to get his finger tips to it as it whistled high into the net for a stunning goal from thirty yards out.
Andy Shinnie almost restored the advantage as he brilliantly turned in the box after chesting down another probing ball from Roberts, but Bell was equal to it again producing another top drawer save. Moments later and Bell once more saved a Shinnie shot from distance.
Another penalty for Inverness after Ross Draper burst into the box and Bell tripped him as he took the ball away from him. Bell was sent packing and Billy McKay was confident enough to slap the resultant spot kick past reserve keeper Kyle Letheren.
To their credit, Killie pushed hard for an equaliser and Reguero pulled off another great save to deny Paul Heffernan. It was becoming a tense final few minutes and McKenzie and Harkins narrowly missed the target as they had a final flourish, but it was too little too late for the Ayrshire men.

REGUERO 4:- Is he a feckin catch or wot ? He didnt put a foot wrong and you can see that he has a bit of skill and pace and is practically a sweeper. I reckon his parents will never forget beinng serenaded at half time !!
RAVEN 3:- I thought that he had a poor game and that is not proctorising. He made a few wayward passes and clearances - although unlike Proctor wasn't punished - and that is the part of the game that he needs to concentrate on. Defensively he is sound and I think that TB has told him not to be clever and get rid asap.
G.SHINNIE 4:- Another solid performance and continues to be a fine attacking force as well. He really does communicate well with Doran and, probably less surprising, his bruvver. As fer the penalty he didnt strike the ball well enuff and the keeper was moving to the right before he struck it. Bell simply guessed correctly. He also wanted to take the second pen as well.
WARREN 4:- Another fine performance although he could have given away a penalty with a mistimed tackle. He is also gelling very nicely with Meekings.
MEEKINGS 4:- As above although quiter than usual was just as effective as ever.
ROBERTS 3:- Still think that the lad is being asked to fit in to a system that does him no favours - but the system is effective and he will benefit from the experience. He also suffers a bit cos Doran is usually the man to find and OTJ is improving all the time as well. He appears to be thinking more about defending than he is about attacking.
OTJ 5:- Feckin master class boyo and has led to me having to eat some humble pie. He looked for the ball every time and did he waste any pass ?
DRAPER 4:- Not at his best yesterday but a great foil fer OTJ. He is always going to get behind or run at defences and what a run fer the penalty. He also showed experience by going fer the pen.
SHINNIE 4:- Hate to say it but I feel that he is a better player when Foran isn't there as we do not employ the hoof and play to his feet plus he has a rambling role which suits him to a tee.
DORAN 4:- Beginning to show more industry and consistency. We know that he has the talent and he is begging to show more maturity. He is looking more like a team player than an individual.
MCKAY 3:- Harsh but he could have got a hat-trick. Shows his confidence that there was no way that anbody else was going to take the spot kick. Having said that his wee backheel fer Shinnie's goal was an impressive assist. Run his wee erse off as ever and fitting that his goal choked his fellow countryman !!
SUTHERLAND 3:- Did nowt wrong and nowt to remember either. Just slotted back in to the wide right role.
FORAN 2:- On to waste some time - but is he causing a dilemma fer next week or not ?

Teaser Paragraph:
Another Fireworks Display Please

The last man to enter Parliament with honest intentions. That is how they described Guy Fawkes, and it's that time of year again. This fixture last season produced plenty of fireworks. There were certainly rockets and a few bangers as Inverness fired six crackers past a stunned Kilmarnock, who managed to score three times themselves, but played like damp squibs.

Both clubs are on a high just now having respectively beaten both halves of what used to be known as 'The Old Firm'. Killie took Celtic crashing back to earth after their European adventure in Barcelona, and Inverness gave The Rangers a reality check as life in the third division looks harder than even they would have imagined.

These two clubs shared sixteen goals in the two Rugby Park fixtures last term, Inverness edging the scoring with nine of those goals. This season Inverness find themselves at the top of the SPL scoring charts after eleven games with twenty three goals and on a six game unbeaten run in the SPL, eight if you count the two League Cup games against Stenhousemuir and The Rangers.

Kilmarnock had slipped up recently with defeats to Aberdeen and St Johnstone before surprising Celtic at Parkhead where goals from Sheridan and a Kelly penalty gave them a surprising but well deserved victory. That was their first win there since 1955, and follows on from their League Cup triumph last season over the Hoops. Kenny Shiels has started the mind games early and is trying to convince everyone that Inverness are the favourites for this one, but you won't find many Inverness fans getting carried away at the moment, despite our decent run of form.

Terry Butcher has praised the team spirit this season and the camaraderie was highlighted today when Simon King discovered his car was covered in post-it's by his own team mates. I'm not so sure Simon was as chuffed as the perpetrators with the new colour scheme on his sparkling Mercedes, but it's this team spirit that has been carried onto the park and is beginning to pay dividends with the recent run of results. I doubt we will see the players coming out onto the park with post-it's covering their bodies, but if that's what makes them tick, then hey-ho.

***Latest Team News***

Inverness captain Richie Foran will not start against Kille, but he will make the bench after getting on the park at Ibrox for a few minutes in midweek, however a full game may be too early for the fiery Irishman after his knee injury. Terry Butcher seems to have his preferred starting line up playing the last few games and I would expect another unchanged starting eleven at Rugby Park. This would keep Shane Sutherland, Conor Pepper, Gavin Morrison and Ryan Esson on the bench. Simon King, Chris Hogg and Nick Ross remain long term casualties.

Kilmarnock could be without the dangerous Cillian Sheridan as he is reported to be struggling with a virus. William Gros misses out through injury along with Garry Hay and Danny Racchi who remain on the sidelines.

tm4tj Prediction:- Light the blue touch paper and wait for the fireworks to begin. These are usually open games at Rugby Park and goals are guaranteed. Given the form of both clubs then another Guy Fawkes extravaganza is on the cards and I would be happy enough to leave with a hard earned point over a sometimes difficult opponent. 2-2 draw is my shout, second guess is 1-2.

Rangers -V- Inverness CT - Report

No cup shock at Ibrox

SPL quality brushed aside a plucky The Rangers as Inverness moved into the semi-finals of the League Cup for the first time in their history with an emphatic 3-0 win in Glasgow.

The minnows were looking to get into the next round at the expense of their more illustrious opponents from the North of Scotland, but by the end of the game they were well beaten and looked in disarray as the SPL club showed the gulf in class was too great for them to overcome.

A first half strike from Andy Shinnie was added to by Gary Warren in the second half, and brother Graeme Shinnie buried a penalty to end the scoring and put Inverness into the semi's along with Celtic, St Mirren and Hearts.

Inverness were treating this game the same as any other and fielded an unchanged side with a surprise on the bench as Richie Foran made sufficient recovery to get stripped for action. Reguero kept Esson away from the gloves for his fifth game in a row.

The game had started evenly enough but Neil Alexander had to save sharply from Doran and McKay as Inverness showed their class. It was fifteen minutes before Antonio Reguero earned his wages, saving from Macleod and Little in quick succession.

A period of posturing was ended in the twenty seventh minute when Andy Shinnie made amends for his series of misses last Saturday after knocking in a feed from Aaron Doran to open the scoring.

This goal stunned the third division side but they struggled to make any headway against a resolute Inverness back four who look more commanding with every game. Hegarty had the only effort of note just before the break, but he headed onto the roof of the net.

Half Time 0-1

Inverness upped the pace after half time and Phillip Roberts was popping up on both flanks and causing problems with his pace and close control. David Raven was booked and then tested the referee's balls as he committed another rash challenge within minutes but he went unpunished for it, much to the chagrin of the home support.

Lee McCulloch passed up the best chance for the liquidated team as he turned a Little centre wide of the mark and five minutes later the game was put beyond them when Gary Warren headed home a Graeme Shinnie corner to put the clinical visitors two ahead.

This prompted McCoist to change things around and he withdrew Shiels and Sutton for Barry McKay and Kevin Kyle, but the pattern remained the same, Inverness dominating play and The Rangers continuing in their error strewn ways.

Billy McKay should have scored the third when Hegarty was short with a passback but Alexander blocked well and an even better chance came when Andy Shinnie played him in on goal, but again Alexander was equal to it.

The goal was merely delayed though as Andy Shinnie was needlessly bundled over on the edge of the box going away from goal by Argyriou, and brother Graeme showed him how to take a spot kick as he stuck it behind Alexander.

Inverness were now well in control and Roberts stung the keeper with an angled shot while Andy Shinnie blasted one over from twenty yards.

Reguero did have one excellent save to make with five minutes left as Barry McKay got a low shot away from twelve yards but found the keeper saving well, diving to his right to deny The Rangers a consolation goal.

Full Time 0-3

So, big team beats wee team, nothing to see here, move along.

Excellent result for Inverness and some all round decent performances with Andy Shinnie in the thick of the action most of the time. Back four looks good once again but were not stretched by the third division outfit and Phillip Roberts just oozed class when he got on the ball, leading the home defence a merry dance.

The Rangers -V- Inverness CT - League Cup

Teaser Paragraph:
Third division newbies looking for cup shock

It's League Cup action on Wednesday night as Inverness face the team formerly known as Rangers in the quarter finals of the trophy at Ibrox.

Having already taken out first division Falkirk and SPL side Motherwell, The Rangers will be looking for another scalp in the shape of Inverness Caledonian Thistle, whose progress to the quarters has been rather low key with away victories over Arbroath and a penalty shoot-out against Stenhousemuir.

The Rangers have done pretty well since gaining admission to the bottom tier in Scotland's leagues and have now moved to the top of division three after only nine games, finding themselves above the mighty Elgin City and Queens Park, although they were beaten recently by bottom club Stirling Albion. However, they failed to claim the scalp of second division Queen of the South in the Ramsdens Cup, losing out on penalties, but they did win last weeks Glasgow derby aganst Clyde when goals from Dean Shiels and Lee McCulloch sealed the points for the Ibrox club.

Inverness, on the other hand, have tottered along in the SPL becoming one of the highest scoring sides in Scotland, despite also having one of the leakiest defences, although they have tightened up at the back in recent weeks. Unbeaten in their last seven games and with only two defeats this season, Inverness can feel pretty smug with their business so far. It's been an encouraging start to the season and the team seem to be settling down after some early slackness and the goals have flowed in every game so far.

What can we expect from this game? It would be foolish for Inverness fans to believe that we will roll over The Rangers with ease, given the disparity in the leagues. Make no mistake, the Ibrox side are still using players that would fit into most SPL sides and the removal of Motherwell from this competition in the last round shows that they will be a force on the park, if not quite so efficient in the boardroom and the bank managers office. So I imagine that The Rangers will be out to show the rest of Scottish Football that they are still a big club ............... maybe not as big as Gregory Tade's Perth, but nonetheless big enough to handle the Highlanders, and that is why they will still be favourites in most peoples eyes to progress into the semi-finals and a possible match with another Glasgow side.

I see that Celtic thrashed St Johnstone in Tuesday nights game 5-0, and Aberdeen went into extra-time with St Mirren, Magennis equalising in the ninety second minute to make it 2-2, but the Buddies went on to win the penalty shoot out by 4-2

***Latest Team News***

Inverness have no fresh injury worries, but captain Richie Foran remains sidelined. Chris Hogg, Simon King and Nick Ross are all long term injury victims. Butcher has a choice to make for the keepers jersey with Esson back to fitness, but Reguero will be difficult to shift. Shane Sutherland and Gavin Morrison will be pushing for a start and Phillip Roberts could be rested with Conor Pepper waiting for his chance. Andy Shinnie is still searching for the two balls he fired high over the bar in the last game, let's hope he sets his sghts a bit lower on Wednesday night.

Rangers defender Sebastien Faure will miss the League Cup quarter final against Inverness. Winger David Templeton is back in training after an ankle injury but is not back to full fitness yet. Spaniard Francisco Sandaza and Kane Hemmings remain out.

tm4tj Prediction:- I would like to think that we could get into the next round of this competition, but Ibrox is not the easiest of grounds to attempt that. Our scoring record and tightening defence will be an asset, and I think we can do it, possibly needing extra-time and penalties, but we do have goal scorers around the park and let's hope we can keep that record going.

Inverness CT -V- St Johnstone - Report

Something did give

We mentioned in the preview that something has to give, and it did. Both sides lost their winning streak as the village side from Perth snatched a last gasp point with a piece of agricultural play from the foot of keeper Mannus. His long punt forward in the dying embers of the game saved Gregory Tade's boast about his new employers, as his replacement David Robertson netted a soft equaliser to level Billy McKay's opener.

They came in numbers from the farming community around the lowland town which became Scotland's seventh city in 2012 with ex-Inverness forward Gregory Tade extolling their virtues and no doubt giving false hope to his followers. At the end of the ninety three minutes Mr Tade was nowhere to be seen, possibly still inside Josh Meekings' pocket, his presence more noticeable for his absence throughout the ninety minutes.

The first blasts of winter descended on the Highlands as snow caused havoc on many of the higher routes around the area and the game was played out in Baltic conditions, not a great day for brass monkeys it has to be said.

With both sides on winning runs, it was always going to be a tough decision to call, as is sometimes the case with these games, the expectation is greater than the game itself, and this was apparent here as both sides cancelled themselves out in the first forty-five.

Inverness started with the same side that trounced Dundee last week and St Johnstone were unchanged from their encounter with Kilmarnock. This meant that Ryan Esson was on the bench and Richie Foran remains injured, possibly for up to another month.

Inverness started brightly and pressed forward from the start, but Meekings made his only error after six minutes when a long through ball escaped him and allowed Gregory Tade to run in on goal. The away fans thought this was to be their moment, but the home fans knew better as Reguero did well to grasp the ball after it bounced off Tade's shin and kept the score at nil-nil.

He did have another glorious chance to score with a header after half an hour from six yards as he rose highest in the box, but he nodded it over the bar when he should have made the keeper work. There endeth the bold Tade's involvement in the game.

Reguero was more fortunate after Rowan Vine lashed a shot goalwards from the right edge of the box but it bounced downwards off Reguero and then up over the bar for a narrow escape for the Spaniard.

It was mostly all cat and mouse in the first half and while the visitors enjoyed plenty of possession, they had no cutting edge and David Raven was so under exerted that he managed to forage forward and try a couple of long range efforts but to no avail. Inverness had gone back into their shell somewhat and were offering St Johnstone the ball at every opportunity but they did not know what to do with it and gave it back to us; and so it continued up to half time with our only attempt of note being a Draper header that was easily gathered by Mannus.

Half Time 0-0

The second half begun in the same manner and little of note happened before Fraser Wright left the field with a nose bleed, and Hasselbaink shortly after. His replacement was due to his lack of success against the Inverness back four.

David Raven was having one of his best games for Inverness, especially going forward, and there were no takers as he fizzed a dangerous ball across the box, but the action was about to warm up in the seventieth minute.

Aaron Doran played a neat reverse ball into the box and Graeme Shinnie was second favourite to get on the end of it, but a tremendous burst of pace saw him get there ahead of Vine who tripped him as he burst through, and picked up a booking for his troubles. No doubt about the award but plenty of doubt about the strike from Andy Shinnie as he blazed it high over the bar, an effort that would have looked good at Murrayfield, but not at the Caledonian Stadium. The ball ended high at the rear of the stands as the fans vented their frustration and searched for the ball in row ZZZ.

Shane Sutherland was introduced for the ineffective Roberts and like last week, this move paid dividends. Some intricate play on the edge of the box saw McKay being played in by Draper and he whistled a great strike below and behind Mannus from the left side of goal to put Inverness ahead.

From that point on, there looked to be only one winner as Inverness pummelled the Perth goal. Tudur-Jones took time off from dictating the play to get a shot away but it was charged down by the now desperate Saint's defence and Billy McKay almost doubled the advantage as he turned neatly in the box on the right side to curl a shot goalwards with his left foot. Unfortunately for him Mannus dived full length to prevent a goal as Inverness turned the screw.

A sporadic break forward almost produced a goal for St Johnstone but Reguero guessed right and threw himself at the feet of the Millar to prevent an equaliser.

It was only a matter of time before Inverness stretched their lead as they burst forward in a throwback to the Pele era and Andy Shinnie almost atoned for his penalty miss. Jones outjumped Tade to nod the ball to the far post where Andy Shinnie lurked, however, he contrived to lash the ball over the bar from a couple of yards when it was easier to score. An unbelievable miss which would come back to haunt the Inverness team on Halloween.

Aaron Doran had been woken up by the sudden Inverness activity and he was unfortunate to see a whipped shot narrowly miss the keepers right hand post. Shinnie's misery was complete when he thrashed another effort just over the bar from twenty yards for what would have been a spectacular goal and he was replaced soon after, but not before the now invisible Gregory Tade had left the field. He had been missing for most of the match, outplayed by young Josh Meekings.

As the clock ran down Liam Craig lifted a shot over the bar to keep Inverness ahead for now, but those misses were going to take their toll before the end.

Doran was strangely adjudged to have committed a foul deep into stoppage time and from the resultant free kick a long ball was launched into the Inverness box from eighty yards away by keeper Mannus. It bounced high to the back post where Tade's replacement David Robertson sneaked in uninvited behind the defence to head the ball past Reguero for an undeserved equaliser with barely fifteen seconds of the additional three minutes left to play.

Full Time 1-1 This felt like a defeat after dominating the latter stages of the second half with so many excellent opportunities to put the game beyond the big team from Perth, alas we were caught out by a hopeful ball into the box and a point each it was.

tm4tj MotM:- Owain Tudur-Jones was immense in the heart of the midfield spraying balls all over the park. He has the look of a great player, always appearing to have time to control and play the ball as though he was having a kick about with the kids on a Sunday afternoon down the Bught. He was closely followed by Meekings who put Tade in his place and Warren and Draper who had fine displays once again. Reguero will take some shifting from between the sticks and Esson may need to sit on the bench a bit longer.

tm4tj Moan of the Match:- Andrew Shinnie had a great game until it came to putting the ball in the opposition net. The penalty miss was a bad one, but the miss from a few yards out was much much worse and although we didn't know it at the time, it was one that was going to prove crucial to the outcome of this game.

My second moan was the poor home attendance. What more do the Inverness public want. Scoring goals every week, top scorers in the SPL, only two defeats in eleven games and still general apathy reigns supreme. Come on folk, get off yer erses and get behind yer local team, we are playing as attractive football as we have since Butcher came to Inverness, but that is seemingly not enough to tempt the stayaways out of the pub or away from the Xmas shopping.

Hell mend ye!

Inverness CT -V- St Johnstone - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Somethings got to give

With both clubs boasting consecutive wins totalling eight games then something is going to break this weekend as the two form teams meet at Tulloch Caledonian Stadium this Saturday.

Inverness are not only on a three game winning run but they have scored eleven goals in the process whilst conceding two. That statistic shows that Inverness are the top scoring club in the SPL after the first ten games with 22 goals, and it was pleasing to see the young strikers continuing the trend at Dundee without seasoned captain Richie Foran in the side, scoring four times in an emphatic win at Dens Park. Billy McKay had the daunting task of replacing the injured Foran and he didn't disappoint with a brace, adding to an Andy Shinnie penalty and a close range strike from Gary Warren.

We still have defensive deficiencies but as the season moves along we are becoming more resolute at the rear and a lot of that goes down to the endeavour of Gary Warren who is proving to be an astute acquisition by Butcher. Another plus has been the form of stand in keeper Antonio Reguero who pulled off a couple of top notch saves against Dundee when they were threatening to square the match before half time. One save in particular from the volley by Nish was simply outstanding. Nish met the ball square on as he swivelled fifteen yards from goal but Reguero matched the effort and pushed it away diving to his right. He also thwarted McAlister as he stole in at the back post to dive low and anticipated the sliding strike and kept the ball out. So, as well as being dubbed a tad eccentric, he has shown he has the qualities to earn his number one jersey and Ryan Esson may have a job prising it off his back on his return from injury. David Raven has received more than his fair share of stick when things were going wrong, so it's only fair to afford him some praise as his recent displays are a long way removed from his error strewn early games for ICT. It is of course, always easier to defend when your team are up the other end of the park scoring goals, but in general we do seem to have tightened it up although I would expect a more rigorous examination from a Tade fuelled Perth side on Saturday.

Our visitors have once again shown that they are here to stay in the SPL and have reached the dizzy heights of second place as we head into this game. Their fantastic run of five wins on the trot has seen them surge up the division to nestle in behind Celtic at the top. The Super J's were second bottom on two points having just drawn 0-0 with Dundee United in a Tayside derby after five games, but it shows what a wee run and a bit of confidence gives you. The winning run started with a superb 2-1 home win over Celtic. They followed that up by ending County's forty game unbeaten run at Dingwall by the same scoreline and then beat Dundee away 3-1. Two home wins against St Mirren and Kilmarnock, both 2-1 and hey presto, second in the league and a record equalling SPL run for the Perth side. Back to 1971 since they achieved that, so a team on form and a stern test for Inverness this week.

St Johnstone have brought in some excellent players of late and one man familiar with us is talismanic striker Gregory Tade. He can be a real handful for defenders on his day and David Raven will have to be at his best to cope with his surging runs from deep. He can also misfire and he had his off days up here as well, missing many sitters and frustrating the fans, so fingers crossed. He somehow believes that moving to Perth is a step up in his career as he believes that they are a bigger club than Inverness. Well well Gregory, you have changed your tune and become high and mighty since turning your back on us. I think he is confusing the words bigger and better club with these words. More wages! Another goalscorer in form is former Saint Mirren striker Nigel Hasselbaink who is not shy at finding the net and he scored his third of the season against Killie. Midfielder Murray Davidson has also notched three goals this season.

***Latest Team News***

Inverness had a boost for last weeks game with Shane Sutherland returning to the action at Dundee and Ryan Esson will give Butcher another headache as he returns from injury, but Antonio Reguero has done nothing wrong in his three games and could retain the keepers jersey. Bad news for Richie Foran as he is expected to miss another couple of weeks and will miss out, along with Simon King, Chris Hogg and Nick Ross.

St Johnstone welcome back Callum Davidson and David McCracken from recent knocks but Peter Pawlett is not fit along with Craig Beattie. Jamie Adam, Steven MacLean and Paddy Cregg are also out for this one. Gregory Tade may have a problem getting into the stadium as his head seems to have swollen excessively. We will have to wait till 16:50 on Saturday night to see if he is hot property or hot air.

tm4tj Prediction:- They all seem to be tough ones to call nowadays, however, with both teams on fine form we are entitled to expect some goals and a fair smattering of entertainment. I'm looking for Inverness to squirm out of this one with a 3-1 win.

Mon the Caley Jags.

Dundee -V- Inverness CT - Report

Dens Park first for Inverness

Inverness recorded their first win at Dens Park with an emphatic scoreline that saw off a spirited Dundee. The game was won in two bursts that saw the visitors score an early double and another late spell of dominance that ended the game as a contest. Billy McKay opened the scoring in the fourth minute and Gary Warren added a second three minutes later. Dundee pressed hard to get back into the game and scored a deserved goal through Colin Nish (who else) but late goals from MotM Andrew Shinnie and Billy McKay sealed the victory.

Friday night was deemed to be the most suitable time to play this fixture after the fiasco in the summer with Govan football club departing the SPL to be replaced by Team 12 which turned out to be Dundee after a series of debates and coin tossing. Sadly, for Dundee, this has left them short of time which has restricted their ability to gather a strong enough squad at present and little time to adapt to the rigours of the SPL.

The game being as live on BBC Alba at 10:00pm saw many fans lock themselves in darkened rooms waiting to watch the drama unfold without any knowledge of the final score. Richie Foran took a knock against County and missed out with Irishman Billy McKay starting up front and that was the only change for Inverness, as Reguero continued between the sticks.

Friday night football seems to be appealing to Inverness after the recent rout of County when we flew out of the blocks to take an early lead against them in the derby. We did the same at Dens Park as we stormed forward from the bell and in only four minutes McKay took advantage of shambolic defending to grab his first goal after Aaron Doran's shot was pushed out by Rab Douglas.

No time to settle into your seats as Inverness kept the pressure on the Dundee defence and in seven minutes centre back Gary Warren popped up at the back post to slam the ball high into the net from close range when Doran swung in a free kick after Roberts was upended. Just the start Inverness were looking for and disaster for Barry Smith as he looked on in despair at his struggling defence. I'm no lip reader, but I don't think he was shouting at his players in Gaelic.

Captain for the night Graeme Shinnie surged forward and tried his luck from distance and Douglas managed to grab it at the second attempt, that was shortly after his brother had the worst ever attempt at a shot which crossed the bye line level with the eighteen yard box. Meh.

Dundee were forced into action and Nicky Riley should have done better than to slice his shot wide of Reguero's left hand post. Colin Nish brought Reguero into action with a header that the Spaniard dealt with comfortably, but a goal was imminent and some shambolic defending of our own saw Nish left with an easy task to score for Dundee. It was the turn of the Inverness management to look on in horror.

Billy McKay passed up a tremendous opportunity to restore the two goal cushion immediately but shot wide from a good position, however Dundee were now right back in the game and McAlister forced Reguero to block his angled drive as the home side probed for an equaliser. It almost came just before half time as the ever troublesome Nish turned in the box and volleyed goalwards, but Reguero made a superb diving save to keep Inverness just ahead at the break.

Half Time 1-2

Milne was first to try his luck at the start of the second half as Dundee looked to get back on level terms but Inverness were always dangerous going forward. Andy Shinnie, Roberts and Shinnie again failed to test Douglas with lengthy efforts as the game evened out, and on the hour mark Inverness introduced Shane Sutherland for his first game since his ankle injury, this was to prove a shrewd move by boss Butcher.

Dundee seemed to run out of ideas as the game wore on and the away side looked ever comfortable dealing with the diminishing goal threats.

With fifteen minutes left Ross Draper almost sealed the win when he smacked a close range shot off the face of the Dundee bar when he really should have scored. The clinching goals were merely delayed though as Inverness pulled away in the last ten minutes to ensure the points went back up the A9. Sutherland raced into the box only to be blocked by Iain Davidson. Penalty no doubt about it and Andrew Shinnie calmly rolled the ball down the middle as Douglas dived to his right.

That goal tore the stuffing out of Dundee and it was no surprise when Inverness completed the scoring. Andy Shinnie drove hard at the tiring Dundee defence and he released Billy McKay on the right side of the box. He showed great composure to skip inside the defender and despite a couple of desperate defensive lunges at McKay, he confidently placed the ball behind Douglas to end the scoring and gain Inverness' first ever win at Dens Park.

Full Time1-4

Andy Shinnie was MotM for an all round composed midfield display and capped it with a cool penalty finish. Reguero pulled off a sensational save to keep Inverness ahead before the break and that proved to be crucial to the outcome as Dundee were on a bit of a roll at that point. Gary Warren once again showed his versatility for a big lad and scored into the bargain, great acquisition to this seasons squad. Billy McKay got amongst the goals and his confidence will be on a high and all this was achieved without captain fantastic Richie Foran.

Plenty reasons to be cheerful, onwards and upwards to third in the table, even if it was for only one day.
