Inverness CT -V- Motherwell - Report

Record defeat leaves Inverness with red faces

Inverness slumped to their worst ever SPL defeat at the hands of a rampant Motherwell who were reportedly feeling under the weather prior to this televised fixture, but it was the hosts who were left sick as a parrot as The Steelmen went nap.

It looked as though the Inverness players were believing all the hype about them in recent weeks, but Motherwell took them back down to earth with a bang as they brushed Inverness aside effortlessly. The home side could not muster a decent attack in the first half and were lucky to go in only two down at the interval.

Goals from Higdon and Murphy exposed a fragile Inverness defence before the break. Foran gave Butcher's side false hope before we shot ourselves in the foot again as Cummins, Ojamaa and Daley capitalised on more defensive shoddiness to set a record home defeat for Inverness in the SPL in front of a poor attendance of under 3000 and a watching telly audience.

Ross Draper missed out again and Foran continued his comeback with Gavin Morrison replacing the recently subdued Phillip Roberts.

Not a lot to shout about in the opening exchanges but Inverness seemed to start where they left off against Hearts, on the back foot once more. Billy McKay got into good space from the edge of the box but shooting from distance is not his forte and the chance went wide.

Nicky Law broke free on the right and his chipped ball sat up for Higdon to climb all over Raven and nod the ball into the net past an exposed Reguero from six yards.

It went from bad to worse only three minutes later when Murphy pounced on a loose defensive header by Meekings to volley the ball low through the keeper after Humphrey had sped clear.

Inverness were rocked by this, but offered nothing as an attacking unit, unlike Motherwell who could easily have been five up at half time. Murphy grazed the bar with a great effort and Reguero kept Inverness interested with a couple of good saves to deny Humphrey and Murphy with Law shooting just over after a neat step over from Lasley.

Half-Time 0-2

No sooner had the second half begun when David Raven fired a cross to the front post and Richie Foran snapped up a half chance to dink the ball past Randolph from a tight angle to reduce the defecit, but Motherwell quickly re-established their superiority and killed the game off.

The overworked home defence had toiled all afternoon to clear their ranks and when Hateley got a second chance after a corner, his cross landed at the feet of Cummins who had more than enough time to control and lash the ball high into the net from twelve yards.

With Inverness throwing caution to the wind, Well were able to pick them off at will as they burst forward with pace on both flanks. Only Reguero once more came to the rescue as he blocked an Ojamaa raid.

The fourth goal was inevitable and the unfortunate Reguero was wrong footed as Ojamaa sclaffed a shot through him to make it 4-1 to the visitors.

Inverness then had their best spell, but the result was beyond them. Doran was unfortunate when he crashed a twenty yarder off the crossbar, Randolph getting a touch to the ball as it passed him, and Shinnie and Foran came close to a consolation as Motherwell took their foot off the gas.

They still threatened on the break and a fifth goal was no more than they merited, although Toni Reguero will not want to see it again as substitute Omar Daley's half hearted effort squirmed under the Spanish keeper to complete the rout.

It was all too much for the dispirited home support who were rapidly dwindling away long before referee Steven McLean saved Inverness from further punishment.

Full Time 1-5

The recent fine run was going to come to an end sooner or later, but the manner in which it manifested itself was embarrassing to say the least and form like this will not see us playing in the SPL for much longer. We may just have to put it down to a bad day at the office, but the fact that it was a continuation of the second half of the Hearts game is a bit worrying. We need to go back to basics and with tough games coming up over the next few weeks it could be season defining time before Xmas. They must be rubbing their hands together in Dingwall after watching this shambles on the telly and rightly so. Us, we need to get our finger out before the cup game or it will be a long season.

As for Motherwell; they seem to be somewhat of a bogey team for us at Inverness and their performance today was as good as has been seen at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium this season, so well played to them, we are your bitches.

Terry was as philosophical as ever, although the disappointment was clear to see, but he did try and remain upbeat and hopes to write this game off as a bad day at the office.
tm4tj MotM:- Difficult choice with most players having an off day, but keeper Antonio Reguero kept us within touching distance before a couple of late lapses, but he kept the score in single figures and for that we can be grateful.

Teaser Paragraph:
Well or no Well

Motherwell are next up in Inverness for Sunday brunch in a 12:45 kick off at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium this weekend.

Stuart McCall feels his squad are ill prepared for this encounter. That will be due to the flu bug being rife in the area which has affected a number of his players. The Motherwell gaffer revealed that training sessions were cut short as his squad were dropping like flies leaving him with only four fit players at one point. So, it looks as though he will be missing some of his regulars, but he will not know who will be fit enough until nearer the day.

In the first game this season, Motherwell ran out 4-1 winners, a scoreline that flattered them somewhat, but it's goals that count and a Higdon hat-trick went a long way to securing the points. That, along with a tremendous display from keeper Darren Randolph saw Inverness slump to their second four goal loss in successive SPL games and things were looking bleak. However, that was nine SPL games ago and Motherwell were the last side to beat us as we embarked on an unbeaten run and a mini goal spree whilst the defence has been more frugal of late.

It's been a good spell for Inverness since the beginning of September. Beating Ross County in that first historic Highland SPL derby and progressing to the semi-final of the League Cup after beating The Rangers at Ibrox. The Scottish Cup pairing us with our Dingwall Shadows has amplified the rising optimism in the camp and the icing on the cake was the inclusion of Andy Shinnie and Billy McKay in their respective international squads. Add to that a stunning first goal for Owain Tudur-Jones last week and news that Inverness are looking to extend deals with their top players then it's a good time to be an ICT fan.

Motherwell started the season reasonably well until the week after beating Inverness when they won 1-2 at Dens Park. Since then, they have only one win in seven, but that was an impressive away win at Perth. Only five points in the last seven games is not the best of form for the Steelmen. Compare that to Inverness' run over the same period where we have amassed fifteen points then we will be seen as favourites for this one. Not our most comfortable position, but results will dictate this and our confidence should be on a high.

We disappointed somewhat last week at home to Hearts when we dominated the opening stages but failed to convert the chances that came our way, and as is so often the case these missed opportunities came back to haunt us as Hearts equalised late in the day to agitate the manager who took his frustration out on the plasterboard in the changing rooms. There is a bit of a traffic jam developing in the SPL with teams queuing up behind Inverness to get into the European spot. This will be a great opportunity for Inverness to create some breathing space and go back to third, but on the other hand, Well will be looking to jump above their hosts should they be victorious. It's as tight as a ducks bahoochie in there.

StattoMann tells us that this SPL fixture at Inverness has seen Motherwell come out on top eight times. Surprisingly Inverness have only won three games and even more surprising is the fact there has only been one draw in the SPL fixtures up North. This fixture has always produced goals, and there has been plenty of them from both sides. Both clubs have recorded 3-0 wins but the highest aggregate was a 3-2 triumph for Motherwell in October 2011 in a topsy turvy game where Inverness had been reduced to ten men with Chris Hogg being sent off. David Davis opened the scoring but Shaun Hutchinson levelled before the break. Andy Shinnie nudged Inverness ahead before Lasley fired a long range effort home a minute later and Tom Hateley made the most of Chris Hogg's sending off by rubbing salt into the wound from the resultant free kick with a deflected strike to steal the points. Good game but not the result we want to see repeated.

***Latest Team News***

Inverness midfielder Ross Draper has still not shaken off the ankle knock he sustained at Rugby Park. He is the only recent injury on top of the long term casualties of Chris Hogg, Simon King, Nick Ross and Ryan Esson, who has a hip injury.

Motherwell's Shaun Hutchinson had a positive training session on Friday and could be considered for selection but Steven Saunders remains out. The rest of the squad will be assessed on Saturday to see how the flu bug has affected them.

tm4tj Prediction:- After the frustration of watching the team let Hearts back into the game last week, I am looking for greater things here and a good reaction from the same players who disappointed last week. We have rapidly become accustomed to seeing our side create and score plenty goals and if we can get ahead then punish the opposition instead of handing them the initiative then we could get back on track. However, Motherwell are one of the more attractive playing sides and have the players to do damage to you. The likes of Higdon and Murphy spring to mind, backed up by one of the top keepers in the league, Randolph, then it could be a close game. But, we don't do predictability, so I am going for 3-1 to the home side.

CTO Player of the Month - October

Teaser Paragraph:
Andrew Shinnie is the talk of the town at the moment after earning his first Scotland call-up...and it's not surprising that, considering his excellent recent form, he was ICT's player of the month for October.

The former Rangers youth player was the star man in the away victories at Dens Park and Ibrox, scoring in both matches as well as in the derby victory over Ross County.  In a closely fought race this month, he edged Aaron Doran into second place by just two votes.  Taking third was Spanish keeper Antonio Reguero, who has consistently excelled after taking over between the sticks following Ryan Esson's injury.

The elder Shinnie now moves into a tie for the lead in the overall standings with club skipper Richie Foran, who missed three of the four October matches with injury.  Ross Draper remains third overall.

Inverness CT -V- Hearts - Report

Broke Hearts leave Inverness Heart Broken

They may be in poor condition off the park, but they played with plenty of fight on the field of play and deservedly took a point back to the capital, albeit with a dubious penalty scored by captain Marius Zaliukas after Owain Tudur-Jones had opened the scoring with a thunderous strike from thirty yards.

Inverness passed up a great opportunity to hit the top of the table by crumbling meekly against a Hearts side desperately trying to avoid the same fate as The Rangers.

An impeccable minutes silence ahead of remembrance day was observed by all as the fans readied themselves for what should have been an entertaining afternoon. It did, however, turn out to be a frustrating day for Inverness supporters as the Jambo's turned the tables with a late sucker punch.

Supporters from both sides offered their predictions before the event

As expected, Richie Foran was the only change Inverness made with Ross Draper being out injured and the visitors started with Sutton and Driver on the bench.

To be honest, this was as scrappy a game as has been witnessed at the Caledonian Stadium this season with neither side able to string too many passes together, and don't get me started on throw-ins, more like throw-aways, as far as Inverness were concerned.

The telly viewers were able to dissect this match in full as Inverness stuttered their way around the park. Gone was the free flowing football of late and an unwelcome return of the longer ball was evident as the match wore on with the midfield being bypassed as Hearts tenacity won the day.

Inverness did start bright enough, or should that be right eenuff, and had the better of the opening exchanges but nothing of note happened in the first quarter, that was until Jones stepped in to score his first goal for the club.

Andy Shinnie did well along the edge of the box holding onto the ball before laying it off to McKay who played it back to Shinnie. With the Hearts defence blocking his path, he rolled the ball back to Owain Tudur-Jones who took a touch before unleashing a ferocious curling shot from thirty plus yards that flew high past a diving MacDonald in the Hearts goal for a fantastic first goal for the Long Man.

Unfortunately, that goal was about it as far as Inverness were concerned as we handed the initiative back to the visitors soon after, although Billy McKay dragged a shot wide from the edge of the box after he jinked his way into a shooting position. Just before the break, MacDonald pulled off a decent save as Foran looked to extend the lead with a placed drive from distance, the keeper pushing his effort to safety.

Hearts had not threatened in the first half apart from a shot from Stevenson that Reguero needed the assistance of his chest to deny the number 7, although the warning signs were evident as they were gaining the upper hand in the midfield battle without being able to penetrate the Inverness back line.

Half Time 1-0

The warnings were not latched on to by the Inverness tacticians and Hearts dominated the second half, but again without causing too much concern for Reguero and Co.

Andy Shinnie almost doubled our advantage after 55 minutes bursting into the box after a neat exchange with Doran but the keeper brilliantly beat away his angled drive and Jones felled Zaliukas when the rebound fell to him on the edge of the box.

However, it was now beginning to look like just a matter of time before the Jambo's would get the breakthrough, the fact that it took so long was the only surprise. Paterson had been interesting throughout, but it was his diving that caught the eye in the last minute of the game. He went down very easily as Jones stuck a leg in his direction and he had no hesitation in hitting the deck, referee Collum falling hook, line and sinker for it. After some confusion as to who would take the kick, captain Marius Zaliukas stepped forward and sent Reguero to his left, the ball unfortunately going to his right and a not undeserved equaliser, although the manner in which it was acheived was somewhat shabby.

Full Time 1-1

Inverness will be kicking themselves after blowing another lead where three points turned into one, but have only themselves to blame after a jaded looking performance where stringing passes together seemed to be too difficult for too many players on the day. Credit to Hearts for sticking to the task and getting their just reward.

tm4tj Man of the Match:- Easier to say who would not be in with a shout for the award, however the back line were pretty solid and David Raven seems to be a different person from the one that arrived in August, and for this and recent performances he gets my vote.

Moan of the Match:- this award goes to whoever thought it was a good idea to sell cup tickets immediately after the final whistle. This led to the North Stand emptying quicker than the Marie Celeste before the end of the game.......meh!

Football Brunch

Penniless Hearts visit the Highland capital this Saturday for a 12:00 noon shootout with Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

The Edinburgh club are being hounded by the tax-man looking to recover a £450,000 debt, amid fears that this latest debt could send the club down the same route as The Rangers. They are already contesting a £1.75m tax bill for unpaid PAYE and VAT, and have defaulted on players wages on more than one occasion recently. The Scottish Cup holders are warning fans that this is not scaremongering and the club could be out of business before the end of this month if financial backing does not improve. Tough times ahead for the Jambo's, and tough times ahead for Scottish football.

However, they have fixtures to fulfill and will be in Inverness on Saturday for the lunchtime kick off.

With Hearts having to offload high earners at the start of the season, they have struggled to gain any momentum and an inconsistent campaign sees them third bottom with thirteen points, five adrift of Inverness. Hearts have only one win in their last five games while Inverness have won four with the one drawn game against St Johnstone. The Jambo's have a poor scoring record on their travels this term, only scoring four times, but they are also set up well defensively away from Tynecastle only conceding five goals in their six fixtures. In contrast, Inverness have scored twelve at the Caledonian Stadium, but have leaked eight goals, mostly in the early part of the season.

The first game between them ended all square when Inverness made a late comeback with ten men to break Hearts as Conor Pepper netted the equaliser in stoppage time. Novikovas and Sutton, from the spot, had put Hearts two up at the break, but an Andy Shinnie penalty threw Inverness a lifeline and they never gave up, even once reduced to ten men when Richie Foran was sent packing for a rash challenge. Pepper's goal was just reward for the battling qualities given the predicament.

There is more at stake in this SPL encounter now that we know the League Cup draw. This is a great chance for either club to lay down a marker for the semi-final and with Inverness on a confidence rush just now, then they could be the ones to set the standard.

Hearts have a new set of youngsters to take on the mantle from last seasons cup winning team with Callum Paterson catching the eye and he will be one to watch.

Ross Draper is struggling to be fit for this game and he has been influential in recent games, forging a good understanding with the long man, Owain Tudur-Jones. They compliment each other in midfield, Jones doing the play-making with Draper an excellent box to box grafter. Butcher could have an easy decision to make should Draper miss out though with Foran getting more match time since his enforced injury time out.

The Long Man speaks to Iain Auld before the visit of the Jambo's.

Antonio Reguero also talks to Auldy boy ahead of the weekends game against Hearts

***Latest Team News***

Inverness midfielder Ross Draper is out of tomorrows visit of Hearts after twisting his ankle against Kilmarnock. Chris Hogg, Simon King and Nick Ross are still all out longer term.

Hearts midfielder Ryan Stevenson is available for selection after missing last weekend's defeat by Dundee, but Mark Ridgers, Jamie Hamill and Dale Carrick remain on the sidelines through injury.

tm4tj Prediction:- The form book shows that we should be considered favourites, but that's not something that sits too well with us. However, we are free scoring, have tightened up the defence somewhat due to the influence of Gary Warren and I believe we have enough in the tank to lay down the gauntlet for the League Cup game. 2-0 for the locals.

Scottish Cup Fever hits the Highlands

Teaser Paragraph:
It's County in the Cup

Inverness Caledonian Thistle have been drawn away to neighbours Ross County in the Scottish Cup fourth round. It's the first time the two clubs have met in the national competition, although Inverness have won at Dingwall before in the Scottish Cup.

The Caledonian Stadium upgrade work was well underway in January 2005 and the tie against St Johnstone was switched to Victoria Park Dingwall in what was the then manager Craig Brewster's first playing appearance for his new club. The game was almost called off after torrential rain and sleet fell throughout, but it just escaped the weather and Inverness edged out St Johnstone with Golabek heading the winner after 75 minutes, the ground resembling a Xmas card scene long before the end.

2021 people were at that game, I imagine there will be a somewhat much bigger crowd for this one with both clubs now plying their trade in the SPL.

There has been three cup games played between the clubs. Two Challenge Cup ties both being played in Inverness and both finishing 1-0 to the Caley Jags. The third cup game was a League Cup fixture at Victoria Park in August 2004. A Barry Wilson corner was met by the head of who else, but Ross Tokely and that was enough for Inverness to advance to the next round. 3315 were at that game where County had players like John Rankin and Don Cowie in their side. Inverness were blessed with Mark Brown, Ross Tokely, Grant Munro, Russell Duncan and Michael Fraser ................ Where are they now?

The most recent derby was the first ever SPL game between the two sides where Inverness eventually ran out 3-1 winners in a storming encounter. Early goals from Ross Draper and Richie Foran put Inverness in the driving seat before Ian Vigurs reduced the leeway with a well struck free kick. A tremendous volley from Aaron Doran settled the match near the end and the TV companies were pretty pleased with the offering from both clubs.

This draw has already whetted the appetite of both sets of supporters with County fans hoping for revenge for the SPL encounter and Inverness fans looking to keep County in their shadows. Bring it on.

So, derby day in the Highlands, and it's also derby day in the capital as Hibernian host Hearts in a re-run of last seasons historic Scottish Cup final. Another all SPL clash sees Motherwell take on Aberdeen.

The Rangers will welcome Elgin City and Inverurie Locos will go to Parkhead should they overcome Arbroath in their replay.

All cup ties will be played on 1st or 2nd December, unless otherwise stated as changes could be made to accommodate TV companies.

Kilmarnock -V- Inverness CT - Report

Killie pay the penalty

Not quite the fireworks from last season, but nonetheless another three points in the bag for Terry's Allstars, and the dizzy heights of third in the league at the moment. Let's not get too carried away though as there are plenty clubs within touching distance and the fall from grace could be just as rapid as the rise to the top.
Both clubs went with unchanged lineups, hardly surprising given their endeavours over the last week, although Ryan Esson was nowhere to be seen, an alleged injury keeping him away, maybe his nose is out of joint given the rave reviews of Spanish goal minder Antonio Reguero.
Andy Shinnie continued his good form and stroked Inverness ahead after twenty-two minutes, but brother Graeme's penalty taking exploits came to an abrupt end as Cammy Bell brilliantly saved his first half spot kick. There was one firework on display. Liam Kelly let off a rocket to level the scores in the fifty-sixth minute but Billy McKay took over the penalty duties to fire home the winner after seventy-seven minutes. Inverness held on against the now ten men of Kilmarnock to earn themselves another three points and the unaccustomed position of third in the league after twelve games.
One hundred and twenty-five visiting fans witnessed this one and a certain Immortal Howden Ender was one of them, joining up with the Caley Away fans for another great day at the 'JimmysaysayetoaKilliepie' dome. When he gets back home, I hope to have a full match report from him.
And here is his informative overview on yesterdays game.
Well it is yet another fine season for the CaleyAwaywithTerrryandMo Brigade and the JuanjoAway contingent from Central Station. By-passed Fanny's which unfortunately is getting a face lift and headed to the Hunting Lodge which has had more feckin management changes than Hearts of Midlothian - probably late wage packets as well. But a free shot and free pool
(c/o GovindaJeggy) helped pass away the pre match warm-up. It was also nice not to be the oldest as the Owd Bugger from Berks flew up fer the game - by the way what has happened to The Fly ?
Anyway, on to the football.
For thirty minutes, up until the penalty, I would say that the display was the best ever (yes EVER) that I have seen ICT play. We were organised, sure footed, industrious and some of the movement, passing and keeping the ball was simply entertainment personified. If we had scored the penalty then I reckon we would have scored more than the six we did at this time last year. In many ways the penalty miss went against us and that, and probably a half time bollocking from the Irish equivalent of Ken Dodd, got Killie out of their slumber. As fer the Diddymans' comments after the game - well there was a penalty for them but it serves McKenzie rite fer not been born a Mac - and did the ref actually play advantage ? - the two we got were also stoneawllers although Draper may well have lost control of the ball - as fer "pulverising" us - well we simply controlled the first half and it was end to end stuff in the second half and we had more chances than them - although the last 10 minutes was nervewracking and I think they had five efforts that practically tickled our crossbar and two fine saves from Reguero. I hope it wasnt tactical to lie so deep as we went to stringing out across the 18 yard box in a return to an old "nightmare". It may well be that three games in a week took its toll. And did the diddyman not realise that TB sat in the stands fer the Tinkerville game !!
Two reports for the price of one............this one from the immortal man himself...............
It was a case of Ayrshire v Inverness this weekend as Caley Thistle visited Rugby Park whilst Clachnacuddin were just down the road at Somerset Park. The overall outcome was even stevens with Caley Thistle and Ayr both winning 2-1. The long journey home would evidently have been a happier one for us as we jumped up to third in the table, top the SPL goal scoring charts, another three points but the icing on the cake was the manner in how we played in the first half. I have been known to be overly critical but I would have to concede that I witnessed the finest 30 minute spell that I have ever seen from a Caley thistle outfit. Terry Butcher pointed out that we now have "consistency and confidence" to add to our CV. But in that first half we would have taken on anybody and we played as a team. In many ways we did not have one individual who stood out and some players who have performed more as individuals in the past suddenly looked like team players. We were simply commanding. We were organised, we were structured, we were industrious but we also played "keep ball" and some of the passing and movement was stunning at times.
ANDY SHINNIE, who must be close to a Scotland cap, scored in the 15th minute. A shot from Aaron Doran was blocked and Shinnie benefitted from a subtle backheeler from Billy McKay. McKay may well have added a second minutes later but was thwarted by Cammy Bell on that occasion. We were then probably a tad fortunate not to concede a penalty as Gary Warren certainly appeared to bring down Rory McKenzie. From my viewpoint it looked like the referee had allowed advantage to be played. Perhaps that was the piece of sarcasm that Mr Shiels got upset about ?
Both goalkeepers were brought in to action but Cammy Bell to centre stage when he saved a Graeme Shinnie penalty just before half time. I suspect that Graeme did not make the contact that he was looking for and Bell may well have done his homework watching the Ibrox goal. Bell guessed right, went all out to his right and parried, and even got back up to parry the ball away from Roberts. In many ways missing that penalty took us of our stride. I am convinced that if it had gone in then we may well have eclipsed the six goal achievement of last season.
As it turned out Shiels would have given his team a right rollicking at half time and they came out like men possessed, determined to up their game. I note that one of the comments made after the game by Mr Shiels was that they "pulverised" us in second half - now that is sarcasm !! Sure Kilmarnock were a better team but it was still end to end stuff. Bell again thwarted McKay in the 53rd minute and three minutes later we took a sucker punch. LIAM KELLY scored and added to his goal at Parkhead the previous week. It was a well struck 30 yard drive which Reguero had no chance to save.
Then there was the moment that turned the game and Bell was again at the centre of the action, Shane Sutherland put Draper through and Bell clattered him. In many ways it may be argued that Draper "played" for it and may also have lost control of the ball but it was a penalty in anybody's book and the only possible outcome was a red card. None of the Killie players made any sort of appeal as if they knew what was going to happen.
It looked to me that Graeme Shinnie was going to take it but the ball had been smuggled away by BILLY MCKAY who showed his level of confidence by putting the replacement keeper Letheren the wrong way. For the next 15 minutes we were "pulverised" and how Kilmarnock did not score is down to luck and solid defending. It also appeared that the efforts and emotion of the last week suddenly caught up with us and we were camped deep in our own half. I reckon that there was at least five efforts from Kille that scraped the top of our crossbar but Reguero and the troops in the firing line stood firm.
I have to agree with Mr Shiels that Kille should have had a penalty but there were three stonewallers yesterday, two being in our favour. Mr Shiels was evidently not watching the Highland derby as it appears that he did not note that Mr Butcher was sitting in the stands. If Mr Butcher is deemed to be "clever" and "charismatic" then what is Mr Shiels' psychological profile of Craig Brown ?!!
And lets all hope that the month of October brings the first trophy of the season to Inverness as Mr Butcher must be a firm favourite to pick up the Manager of the month accolade. Terry also appeared to suggest that suspensions and injuries tampered with his team selection last season. The picking of the starting eleven against Hearts must be a difficult dilemna for him. But at approximately 13.55 on Staurday 10th November 2012 there may be a new team sitting top of the SPL. (cue smiley!!)
And for good measure, report number two..................
As IHE alluded to above, Inverness were quick out of the blocks and Aaron Doran was close to opening the scoring in the third minute after latching onto a neat flick from Andy Shinnie, but his shot from the angle of the box just cleared the junction of post and bar. Andy Shinnie should have been awarded a free kick if not a penalty as he broke into the box and was uncerimoniously upended right on the line, but no foul was Norris' judgement. He was later to wind up Kenny Shiels by not awarding them anything, according to the Killie manager.
Jones was next to have a pop at goal but he missed the target and the hard working Billy McKay tried his luck after fifteen minutes but he pulled his shot wide.
Kilmarnock were woken up by all this activity around their box and the dangerous Rory McKenzie brought out a great save from Antonio Reguero, who dived low to his right to push his shot to safety, Gary Warren turning the loose ball behind for a corner.
Three minutes later and Inverness broke the deadlock with a well worked goal. Phillip Roberts threaded a ball through to Doran on the edge of the box. His shot was charged down inside the box but Mckay was quickest to react and backheeled the ball into the path of Andy Shinnie who stroked the ball under Cammy Bell.
A wayward pass across his defence from McKeown set McKay in on goal, but as he took the ball to the edge of the six-yard box, Bell blocked his effort with his legs and the chance was gone.
McKenzie was denied a penalty claim as he went down under challenge inside the box and Shiels was not amused, but he did appear to go down rather easily.
Reguero again earned his crust by diving low to his left to thwart a low strike by McKenzie from twenty yards, just a minute after Bell had saved from Roberts at the other end.
Drama as half-time approached. Lee Johnson blocked Andy Shinnie as he waltzed into the box and the referee pointed to the spot only for brother Graeme to be foiled by Bell who was doing his utmost to keep Killie in the game. He clawed the ball away with a sprawling one handed save then reacted brilliantly to punch the rebound away from the advancing Roberts, top class stuff from Cammy.
Half-Time 0-1
Strong stuff must have been said in the Killie dressing room and the home side looked more determined in the second half. McKay was once more stopped by Bell and ten minutes after the break Liam Kelly set off his rocket. He turned on the edge of the centre circle strode forward unchallenged then unleashed an unstoppable shot into Reguero's postage stamp corner. The keeper did manage to get his finger tips to it as it whistled high into the net for a stunning goal from thirty yards out.
Andy Shinnie almost restored the advantage as he brilliantly turned in the box after chesting down another probing ball from Roberts, but Bell was equal to it again producing another top drawer save. Moments later and Bell once more saved a Shinnie shot from distance.
Another penalty for Inverness after Ross Draper burst into the box and Bell tripped him as he took the ball away from him. Bell was sent packing and Billy McKay was confident enough to slap the resultant spot kick past reserve keeper Kyle Letheren.
To their credit, Killie pushed hard for an equaliser and Reguero pulled off another great save to deny Paul Heffernan. It was becoming a tense final few minutes and McKenzie and Harkins narrowly missed the target as they had a final flourish, but it was too little too late for the Ayrshire men.

Tudur-Jones
REGUERO 4:- Is he a feckin catch or wot ? He didnt put a foot wrong and you can see that he has a bit of skill and pace and is practically a sweeper. I reckon his parents will never forget beinng serenaded at half time !!
RAVEN 3:- I thought that he had a poor game and that is not proctorising. He made a few wayward passes and clearances - although unlike Proctor wasn't punished - and that is the part of the game that he needs to concentrate on. Defensively he is sound and I think that TB has told him not to be clever and get rid asap.
G.SHINNIE 4:- Another solid performance and continues to be a fine attacking force as well. He really does communicate well with Doran and, probably less surprising, his bruvver. As fer the penalty he didnt strike the ball well enuff and the keeper was moving to the right before he struck it. Bell simply guessed correctly. He also wanted to take the second pen as well.
WARREN 4:- Another fine performance although he could have given away a penalty with a mistimed tackle. He is also gelling very nicely with Meekings.
MEEKINGS 4:- As above although quiter than usual was just as effective as ever.
ROBERTS 3:- Still think that the lad is being asked to fit in to a system that does him no favours - but the system is effective and he will benefit from the experience. He also suffers a bit cos Doran is usually the man to find and OTJ is improving all the time as well. He appears to be thinking more about defending than he is about attacking.
OTJ 5:- Feckin master class boyo and has led to me having to eat some humble pie. He looked for the ball every time and did he waste any pass ?
DRAPER 4:- Not at his best yesterday but a great foil fer OTJ. He is always going to get behind or run at defences and what a run fer the penalty. He also showed experience by going fer the pen.
SHINNIE 4:- Hate to say it but I feel that he is a better player when Foran isn't there as we do not employ the hoof and play to his feet plus he has a rambling role which suits him to a tee.
DORAN 4:- Beginning to show more industry and consistency. We know that he has the talent and he is begging to show more maturity. He is looking more like a team player than an individual.
MCKAY 3:- Harsh but he could have got a hat-trick. Shows his confidence that there was no way that anbody else was going to take the spot kick. Having said that his wee backheel fer Shinnie's goal was an impressive assist. Run his wee erse off as ever and fitting that his goal choked his fellow countryman !!
SUTHERLAND 3:- Did nowt wrong and nowt to remember either. Just slotted back in to the wide right role.
FORAN 2:- On to waste some time - but is he causing a dilemma fer next week or not ?
